Your Library On The Go
Are you heading off for summer travels? Whether you’re going on a quick drive to Milwaukee or packing for that big trip to Japan, don’t forget to take the library with you!
When it was time to head down to southern Illinois with my two boys for last August’s total eclipse, I wanted to be sure to stock up on music for the trip. I don’t pay for an online streaming service, and I thought there might be some areas where cell service would be spotty, so I wanted to be sure I could listen to full albums offline. The hoopla digital app was exactly what I needed, giving us plenty of music to listen to on the long drive down—and the even longer drive back! More recently, at a conference in Philadelphia, I made sure to have a good book from CloudLibrary and some magazines from RBDigital and Flipster loaded on my device. Your Arlington Heights Memorial Library card gives you access via your smartphone or tablet to literally hundreds of thousands of downloadable and streaming eBooks and Audiobooks, magazines, music albums, movies and more. In fact, the library now has access to more online items than physical ones. Our services include: • CloudLibrary: eBooks & audiobooks

Each service has its own app, and for most services, titles selected on one device (such as your smart phone) will also appear on your other devices (such as your tablet or PC). Kanopy and hoopla are also compatible with or have apps for select streaming/casting devices (Roku, AppleTV, FireTV, etc.). Available apps vary by service. Plan to be away from Wi-Fi and data? Content from CloudLibrary, Overdrive, hoopla, PressReader, RBDigital and Flipster can be downloaded to your device for reading while you’re in airplane mode or off the grid. Meet our Summer Artist-in-Residence Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind opportunity to meet and get creative with acclaimed children’s book author and illustrator Chris Raschka. The library’s artist-in-residence program will include experiences with the artist, including a chance to watch Raschka in action as he works on his own creative projects in the library. His exhibit, Bravo! Chris Raschka, showcases more than 50 works of art, and will be on display in the Marketplace from June 4 to August 12. Bright colors, freeform shapes, childlike characters and a vivid sense of movement and rhythm highlight Raschka’s signature artwork in watercolor, pastel and charcoal pencil.

Raschka has authored more than 60 children’s books, received two Caldecott Medals and has been selected for The New York Times’ Ten Best Illustrated Books of the Year list multiple times. Get a lead for landing your first job
A warm and sunny afternoon on the soccer fields at Sunset Meadows feels a world away from the cold and snowy night in February when Genevieve Hill joined 400 other area teens to check out the library’s Sixth Annual Teen Job Fair and the more than two dozen area businesses and organizations looking to hire students. “I checked out a lot of the tables and there were so many different options that I didn’t know about,” says the 16-year-old Arlington Heights resident. “I liked the Park District because I thought it would be so nice to work outside.” The Arlington Heights Park District liked Genevieve’s credentials, as well. After review of her online application and an interview, she was hired. Training and certification soon followed and this spring the Hersey High School varsity soccer player officially began her very first job –an assistant referee for soccer. “I’ve been playing soccer since I was three, and I used to play park district soccer,” said Genevieve. “So being a soccer ref and getting to be outside, it is the perfect job.”

Volunteers recognized for ‘making a world of difference’ The library’s Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon honored 426 volunteers who contributed 28,413 hours of service in 2017. Thirty-one volunteers received special Hours of Service and Years of Service recognitions for 500 to 16,500 hours of service and three to 35 years of service. The top honor went to Al Hong, Volunteer of the Year. “[Volunteering] lets me have a chance to encourage younger people and newer immigrants in our community,” Hong said. He began volunteering at the library in 2016 and hopes that others will follow his lead and volunteer as well. You’re never too old to travel! That’s the idea behind a new library outreach program for seniors that utilizes Google Expeditions, a virtual reality experience to give older adults the thrill of visiting virtually anywhere in the world. “It was an out of body experience,” recounted Ida, a resident at The Highlands at The Moorings of Arlington Heights, who at 91-years-young recently experienced virtual reality for the first time. Ida, along with 30 other residents, donned a pair of virtual reality goggles and was soon transfixed with a 360-view of Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello. They explored room after room of the Virginia estate, as well as the gardens where Jefferson cultivated 250 varieties of vegetables.

It was amazing, so beautiful and very impressive.” The visit to Monticello marks the second adventure in the travel outreach series, which started last fall with a visit to Brazil for residents at local memory care, assisted living and skilled care communities. Both destinations were a hit and like any good vacation, the payoffs linger long after you return home. “It rejuvenated me,” said Ida. “I came in as 91 and the experience made me feel like a new person.”
