In February, I wrote about our belief in the power of libraries to facilitate dialogue and promote understanding of differing beliefs and points of view. We have been proud to offer space that serves this essential function in our community and are committed to Inspiring Understanding in Arlington Heights through diverse collections, displays, programs and services. After all, libraries are for everybody. One of the many ways you can join us in inspiring understanding is by participating in our annual Summer Reading Program. This year residents of all ages are challenged to Build a Better World through kindness, community participation and broad reading selections. Each age group will find different challenges and prompts but all inspire the same conceptâ€“to learn about the world and yourself through diverse reading and participation. Also new this summer, residents looking to become active in the community can connect with mission-driven, non-profit organizations at our Volunteer Fair; teens and adults can explore issues of race, gender and self-esteem through a dramatic storytelling performance by Chicagoâ€™s About Face Theatre; kids and families can conceive a better world through unique art projects at three Pop-Up Art Studios; families can immerse their children in Spanishlanguage skills at Bilingual Storytimes in Heritage Park, and so much more. Year-round, you can expect your library to offer an expanded selection of materials and a collection that truly reflects our world. You can count on book recommendations and booklists that reflect a diversity of experiences, and you can join in dialogue with your neighbors around issues presented in our new documentary film and discussion series, A Wider Lens, beginning this summer. We are also working behind the scenes to ensure our spaces, services and environment are welcoming to all. I invite you to come along as we create opportunities for everyone to exchange ideas, celebrate diversity and discover the world we all share. Build a Better World Summer Reading Program • June 5–August 13

Join us as we work together to Build a Better World with unique reading programs for kids, teens and adults.

Kids Sign up in Kids’ World or on the bookmobile to get a reading log and set your summer goals. Each week we will have activity cards for babies–pre-K, Punch In! for kids in grades K–3, and the good deed machine for tweens in grades 4–6. Share your acts of kindness weekly and add them to our Kindness Paper Chain. The more we do to Build a Better World, the longer the chain! For infants–age 12.

Teens

We challenge you to review a book/movie/show/album that impacted you, gain experiences at one of our events, garner skills in our DIY space, create a film only you could make for the Teen Film Fest or contribute your time to a volunteer project. Achieve mastery in one area or in all the things to earn great prizes. For teens in grades 7–12.

Adults Complete a variety of reading and activity prompts designed to expand our comfort zones and to help inspire understanding of our diverse world. Track your progress by logging books, events and more for the chance to earn prizes along the way. For adults age 18 and over.

Stream classic films, documentaries and more Arlington Heights cardholders now have access to Kanopy, a collection of over 30,000 films from over 1,000 top producers, such as Criterion Collection, The Great Courses, PBS, Media Education Foundation, Stanford Executive Briefings, New Day Films, Cohen Films, California Newsreel, Collective Eye and more. Sample feature film titles include Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon, Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast, Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times, and the documentary Grey Gardens. Kanopy launches on average 500 new releases per month, ensuring the collection is fresh with the new content. You can watch up to eight videos per month and never need to place a hold. See yourself on the cover of a magazine You never know who or what you’ll discover on the library’s bookmobile. Take 10-year-old Ainslie, a soon-to-be fifth-grader at Our Lady of the Wayside School (OLW) in Arlington Heights. When the bookmobile visited OLW earlier this spring, Ainslie spotted the March/April issue of the American Girl magazine onboard. And best of all - that’s Ainslie on the cover! We discovered that Ainslie, who has been modeling professionally for about five years, had this particular photo, whose caption reads “Gotta Love a Rainy Spring Day,” taken last September on location in Madison, WI. It wasn’t until the magazine arrived six months later that Ainslee and her family realized that her photo had been selected for the cover. “It made it fun for all of us not knowing and then to see it,” her mother told us. We loved seeing it and meeting this American Girl too!

What would it be like to sleep over at the library? Well, your stuffed animal will find out! On Monday, June 5, bring your stuffed animal to the Lindsey Room from 4–5 p.m. Then come to the library Tuesday morning to see what fun your stuffed animal had and enjoy a snack along with a special storytime. For ages 3–6.

Co-sponsored with the Arlington Heights Park District Join us for fun in the sun at area parks this summer. Drop by for a 20-minute storytime and browse the bookmobile.
