SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS

If you’ve been to the library recently, you’ve probably noticed the construction in the parking lot and underground garage. It is part of a project to add better lighting, improved signage, clearly delineated pedestrian walkways and other improvements all designed to make the area safer for drivers and pedestrians. Unfortunately, there is no ideal time to close any portion of the parking lot at our busy library. We are doing everything we can to minimize the disruption, and think you will agree the results will be worth the inconvenience. In the meantime, we have increased the grace period on materials from 3 to 10 days for the duration of the construction in recognition that it may be less convenient to return materials. You might also consider returning your materials at the drop boxes at Camelot and Frontier parks, the Arlington Heights Senior Center or our new temporary book drop at Olympic Indoor Swim Center. Thank you for your patience, and I look forward to seeing you at the library!

Grow your language skills at Bilingual Storytime

“Two, four, six, eight…wow that book was really great!” “¡Qué bueno!” It was a family affair for the Dreys of Arlington Heights who together enjoyed the library’s new Cuentos Bilingües, Bilingual Storytime, held weekly this summer at Heritage Park. Mom Jodi, dad Steve, first-grader Jaxon and 4-year-old twins, Elliott and Sidney, their grandfather Bob Briggs visiting from Colorado and their aunt, Dianne Barringer, heard stories in both English and Spanish, and danced and sang along with storyteller Becky Cleson. “We really just like the idea of having the stories in two languages and having the opportunity to interact with people of other cultures as well,” said Jodi Drey, whose son Jaxon is enrolled in the two-way dual-language program at Juliette Low Elementary School and used the bilingual storytimes as a way to practice his language skills over the summer. Following storytime, the family also loved visiting the bookmobile. This fall, look for Polish Bilingual Storytime. See details on page 7. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dave Eggers grew up near Chicago and graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His debut, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, was a New York Times bestselling memoir and a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2001. Eggers is the author of ten books including the international bestseller The Circle, Zeitoun, Heroes of the Frontier and A Hologram for the King, which was a finalist for the 2012 National Book Award. Eggers is the founder of McSweeney’s, an independent publishing house in San Francisco that produces books, McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern and a monthly magazine, The Believer. McSweeney’s also publishes Voice of Witness, a nonprofit book series that uses oral history to illuminate human rights crises around the world. Eggers is the co-founder of 826 National, a network of tutoring centers around the country and ScholarMatch, a nonprofit organization that connects students with resources, schools and donors to make college possible.

Build a

Summer months were busy as families and readers of all ages worked to Build a Better World through this year’s summer reading challenges. Parents enjoyed working with their children to practice kindness. Tweens and teens came out in record numbers, pushing themselves to read more diverse books. Hundreds of adults wrote messages of gratitude on our interactive chalkboard displays about the people in their lives who go above and beyond. Overall, more than 4,000 babies, kids, tweens, teens and adults participated, broadening their reading selections and their world view. Some children who completed the summer reading program even used their final book prize as an opportunity to give back. They were excited to choose a book, not for themselves, but to share with a younger child.

Community Bike Ride Saturday, September 16, 9 a.m.–noon / North School Park Day-of Registration – 8 a.m.; Ride begins 9:15 a.m. Presented in partnership with the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC)

Bring the family and join local cyclists for a 14-mile (or a four-mile “starter loop”) bike tour of Arlington Heights with members of the BPAC and the AHPD bike patrol. Between 8–9 a.m., participants can have their bike checked by a mechanic or get their tires filled. All riders are asked to wear a helmet and be familiar with rules of the road and basic bicycle operation. REGISTER in advance online, or in person the morning of the ride.

2nd ANNUAL FANCON This little Wonder Woman was just one of the nearly 800 people who enjoyed a variety of

activities designed to engage customers of all ages at this summer’s second annual FanCon. Attendees tried their hand at the trivia wheel, worked their way through a Minecraft obstacle course, searched high and low for Star Lord’s missing cassettes in a scavenger hunt, met female superheroes, characters from the Star Wars universe and local artists, and helped navigate a spaceship in an interactive gaming experience. Throughout the day, crafts and games kept people busy in the world of their fandoms, and there was never a dull moment!

Vinyl record returns after 40 years

As an Arlington Heights teenager in the early 1970s, Bill Paige ‘borrowed’ a vinyl record by experimental musician Harry Partch titled “Delusion of the Fury.” “I never intended to keep it. I just knew I needed more than three weeks to absorb all the info on here…then life happens,” said Paige. In July, life came full circle when Bill, now retired and living in Texas, returned the Partch vinyl to the library in mint condition – no fines, no penalties. The album, now a collectible in its original wrap with vintage check out card, was donated to the Friends of the Library for its summer sale. “If feels good to make amends and clear the slate,” said Paige.

Create a music video and win a college scholarship

The contest rules read, “Make sure your submission focuses on your performance.” With that, 18-year-old Arlington Heights resident Chris Pecoraro had just the inspiration needed to create a one-of-a-kind entry for the Performing Arts category in this summer’s Frontier Days, Inc. scholarship competition – a music video recorded in the library’s Studio featuring his one-man band performance of

Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing.” “It was super convenient to come into the library and to have access to all this cool stuff and nice equipment,” said the recent Buffalo Grove High School graduate who began playing music in the fourth grade. “In the video, I sang. I played acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, drums and keyboards. I recorded it and combined it on the computer, mixed and edited it. I borrowed a camera from the library and used iMovie to put it all together.” Chris spent 8 hours in the Studio, which resulted in his 2:45 minute solo performance of Hendrix’s 1967 classic earning him first place in the competition – a $1,500 scholarship! “It was pretty nice, it was a good day,” said Chris as he recalled receiving the news of his win.

Chris will put the scholarship to good use this fall at the University of Minnesota where he plans to major in computer science with a minor in music.
