Inspired by Dave Eggers’ The Circle, this interactive exhibit invites you to experience how social media influences us, individually and collectively. Imagine a utopian society of your own. Write, draw or doodle your ideas on iPads. Check out what others have shared for inspiration and explore related media. As a preview, we invited some community influencers, all savvy users of social media, to read The Circle and reflect on topics explored in the #beinthecircle exhibit. Their responses follow.

Looking for your next great read? Our staff loves to talk about books, movies and music. Stop by the Info Desk, strike up a conversation, and you’re sure to go home with the perfect match for your interests. Have you ever found yourself hoping to connect with someone who read the same book so you can talk about the characters and surprise ending? There are times I have read a book that I thought was mediocre and then when I discuss the book with someone, I find their insights change my view of the book and enrich my appreciation of it. Each month, the library offers a variety of book discussions where you can connect with others and compare notes. No experience is needed - just a desire to join in and share your insights and experiences.

With this in mind, we encourage you to pick up a copy of this year’s One Book, One Village selection, The Circle by Dave Eggers. Celebrating its fourth year, One Book, One Village invites Arlington Heights to read the same book at the same time and share the experience through discussions and related programs. New this year is an online book discussion group! Get in on this ongoing, dynamic conversation by searching “The Circle AHML Book Discussion Group” on Facebook. Dave Eggers will be in Arlington Heights on Thursday, October 12 to discuss The Circle, his work as a writer and editor and his philanthropic pursuits. We hope you’ll be there, and together we can continue the conversation!

Be part of the library’s first online book discussion group! Launched in early September on Facebook, the group has been talking about and commenting on the 2017 One Book, One Village selection, The Circle by Dave Eggers.
