THE LIBRARY IN MANY DIFFERENT LANGUAGES Did you know you can now check out books in Hindi? This is just the latest addition to the library’s World Languages collection, which continues to grow, with plenty of options for residents who read and speak in different languages. “Every day I look at the Japanese books,” said Eriko Yamamoto, who regularly checks out books. Yamamoto recently moved from Japan to Arlington Heights, and began using the library after her husband recommended it as a place to learn English. She enjoys reading fiction books in her first language. “Because America has many, many English [books], I forget to read [in] Japanese,” she explained. VERA ARDIZZONE
Vera Ardizzone also makes use of the library and its resources. Originally from Mongolia, Ardizzone speaks Mongolian, Russian and English. She moved to the United States in 2002, and began living in the Northwest suburbs in 2014.
ERIKO YAMAMOTO
Yamamoto and Ardizzone are just two of almost 500 registered students who participate in the library’s English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. “I love this library, there are lots of ESL programs here,” Ardizzone said. She attends classes three days a week, and takes advantage of resources such as News for You, a newspaper publication geared towards ESL speakers. “I like to read and watch the classics, but the real classics are too much. That’s why I like the library – they have many books for ESL [speakers].” The library has more than 3,000 books, eBooks and eAudiobooks in languages
including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian and Spanish in addition to newspapers and magazines in eight languages and more than 1,000 movies in nearly 50 different languages. The library’s world music collection features more than 350 albums in Spanish, Portuguese, German, Hawaiian and more. “I want to bring this library back to Japan,” Yamamoto said. “I love this place, [it’s] so interesting. I walk around every aisle to find books or magazines or newspapers.” No matter what language you speak, you can always discover, learn, read and create at the library. Learn more at ahml.info.
COMPLETE A PUBLISHING PROJECT TO GIVE LONG-FORGOTTEN POETRY A NEW LIFE What began as the dutiful act of cleaning out his deceased foster mother’s Hyde Park apartment in 1998, 20 years later resulted in an unexpected discovery for Don Bunce. The find was two notebooks tucked inside a plastic bag that Bunce had saved, but never opened, before placing in a closet at his Arlington Heights home. That is until one day in March 2015.
2
War-time, the poems are a time capsule of an era and a young woman’s personal journey. Bunce was determined the poems should never be lost again. He turned to the Arlington Heights Memorial Library.
“I opened up the bag and started reading all of this poetry and I said, ‘Holy Mackerel. This poetry is really thoughtprovoking and so, so beautiful.’”
“I don’t have a computer at home so I spent a lot of hours here,” said Bunce. “At first, all I wanted to do was transcribe the poems into a Word document and when I finished with that, I said, ‘Now what? I’m going to publish it.’ Once I got going, I couldn’t stop. I had to do it all.”
The poems were the creation of Connie Callahan, Bunce’s foster mother. He knew she was a prolific reader but never realized she was a poet as well. More than 300 poems filled the pages of Connie’s notebooks, all handwritten from 19331943. With titles like Ambition, The One Who Fits the Shoe and For a Farewell in
With transcript in hand, Bunce explored publishing options. He eventually found Amazon and reviewed requirements for self-publishing. Again, Bunce turned to the library for help—this time scheduling one-on-one sessions working with a Digital Services specialist and tools like Photoshop available in the library’s Studio
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS MEMORIAL LIBRARY
to create the book’s cover and specified formatting for the inside pages. “This project wouldn’t have been created without the library’s help,” said Bunce. “(The library’s Digital Services specialist) was such an expert maneuvering all the pieces.” The end result is Dreams Preferred—The Poetry Collection of Connie Callahan published in December 2018. The book’s cover features a captivating photo of Connie and inside are 84 of her most heartfelt poems. “I think it’s beautiful,” said Bunce, reflecting on the poetry and the accomplishment of creating this lasting tribute for his foster mother. “She was such a keen observer of life and a seeker of the truth.” Learn more about what you can do in the Studio at ahml.info/studio.
