READER When I was growing up (pre-internet), my dad and aunt would often get into debates on a wide range of topics. The solution to find the right answer was to always “call the library.” While the way we find information has changed, one way to find reliable, quick information is to still call the library. And we’re here for you! During the recent Equifax data breach, we received many phone calls from customers requesting information on next steps and how to protect their credit. Leading up to the solar eclipse in August, we directed customers on how to find reputable glasses and answered questions about the path of the solar eclipse. When a customer wanted help finding a photo of a house she lived in over 60 years ago, she contacted the library and our call center staff. The house was torn down many years ago, but staff were able to research the address and find a photograph from the 1960s. These are just a few of the ways we assist customers every day. The library’s Info Services department staff our very busy call center and answer all calls and online chats that come into the library. In many ways, it is the one stop shop for your information needs. And busy it is…we average a little over 6,000 phone calls a month and had more than 7,500 phone calls in August, our busiest month yet! So the next time you need answers to questions like: “I recently read The Underground Railroad. Can you recommend other books like it?” “I’m going to a new doctor; can you find me information about their background?” “I’m selling my car and need a bill of sale.” We’re here for you! What began as a Google search by a book editor in Canada became an aha moment for Arlington Heights resident Awilda Prignano. When asked to make an audio recording of a story she had written for publication in a collection of motivational essays, she discovered the solution was right in her own zip code.

Record a chapter for an audio book
“My editor said, ‘Awilda go to your local library. They have a professional audio booth you can use,’” Prignano recalls. “I couldn’t believe it. Someone in another part of the world was telling me about this amazing resource and there it was right in my own backyard.” The resource was the library’s Studio. Located on the first floor, the Studio offers the space, hardware and software for customers to get creative with video, music, graphic design, digitization and more including a studio production vocal booth. Prignano booked the audio booth twice to practice reading her 2,500-word story and get familiar with the equipment. “It was so easy and convenient to book online each time, and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful with technical assistance,” Prignano says. “Each session was two hours and best of all it was free—where else can you get that?”
Prepared and ready, she booked a final session. This one for the official recording of her story, The Thriving Monkey, Chapter 20 of Follow It Thru: Obstacles Equal Opportunities – a 17:52 recording that Awilda did in one take! “I was so proud of how smoothly it all went and then even prouder when I found out that my recording was the one they submitted to Amazon to pitch the audiobook because of the quality.” Prignano is already at work on a follow-up to this project and is grateful for the support and resources. “This is a dream of mine to be a writer and to see it start to come to reality has truly been amazing.”
Experiment with music at the Tech Bar During the month of November, the interactive Tech Bar on the library’s first floor will feature a selection of electronic music-making tools, including Roli Blocks, Theremini, Stylophone Beatbox, littleBits Synth Kit and Otamatones. Stop by The Music Box display near the Tech Help Desk and experiment with different musical styles, mix your own tracks and play with these new and exciting music-making devices.

The 101st Airborne Division’s heroic defense of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge is legendary in military history.
