Thank you to the Friends of the Library for In 1968, the Friends of the Library began donating gifts to the library. Several decades later, the nonprofit organization has been able to contribute more than $1.5 million in donations and is now celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Through their consistent recognition of the importance of library services, the Friends have served as a vital link between the library and the Arlington Heights community. The Friends have a book boutique in the library and are in charge of four quarterly book sales. The funds from these projects have been used to provide programs, materials, equipment and artwork.

“We would not be the library we are today without the 50 years of dedication and commitment by our Friends of the Library. They are so much more than just Friends, they are a reflection of what makes our community so special,” said Library Board of Trustees President Debbie Smart.

Discover your inner Keith Moon “Who wou ld have eve r thought I’’d be a ru d mmer.”

Creativity can pop up in the most unexpected of places – just ask Arlington Heights resident Tim Perek.

“I was looking for a place to work, and I found this space,” said Perek, pointing to his surroundings in the library’s Studio. One of the many features of the Studio includes access to Adobe Creative Suite – a valuable tool and resource for Perek who recently launched a marketing consulting business, Illuminator Labs. Yet it was another piece of Studio equipment that eventually caught his eye.

“I see these drums, and it was kind of embarrassing at first,” Perek recalled with a laugh. “But I started playing and discovered I got this thing inside me.” Perek soon found himself downloading the Drummer tutorial on Garageband and mapping out his schedule to include time to practice on the electric drum kit in the Studio.

“It’s one thing to have a dream. It’s another thing to carry it out,” said Perek. “Who would have ever thought I’d be a drummer.”

Perek, who grew up playing the piano and guitar, now ranks drumming as his top musical passion. So much so, he bought a set of drums for home and plays daily. As a 33-year-resident of Arlington Heights, Perek says he is amazed and grateful for all that he’s rediscovered at his local library.

“This place is much bigger than just information,” Perek said. “The library allows someone to investigate and learn about something before they invest in it. You can try it out first under the guidance of an incredible staff and team of experts,” he added. “For me, it’s been the perfect launch pad and place for reinvention.”

Join local cyclists for a 14-mile (or a four-mile “starter loop”) bike tour of Arlington Heights. Riders will leave from North School Park at 9:15 a.m. with route guidance from members of the BPAC and the AHPD bike patrol. Please bring a refillable water bottle. The Circuit Court Archives are a great, often overlooked resource. This class concentrates on a very practical approach to on-site court research including, civil, law and chancery cases, divorces, wills and probates, county naturalizations, declarations of intentions, criminal cases and burnt records. LIBRARY NEWS Executive Director search begins The Arlington Heights Memorial Library Board of Trustees has issued a request for proposal to various industry consultants to assist with the search and hiring process for a permanent executive director of the library. The Board is planning to have the selection process completed and a permanent executive director in place by the end of the summer.

Library strategic plan nears completion The library is planning to present its new three-year strategic plan to the community in June. The plan utilizes information from the community survey, community retreat and staff survey. “Thanks to everyone in the Arlington Heights community for taking the online survey, and to the over 50 community members who participated in the all-day planning session,” said Mike Driskell, Interim Executive Director. “It’s our goal to provide best-in-class customer service, materials and facilities, and be responsive as needs change to serve our community.” Library Strategies, a non-profit library consulting company, is helping to develop the plan.
