Interested in making a promotional video for your business? The library provides access to studios and equipment so you can create one at no cost. In January, the library expanded its services with the help of our partner SCORE Chicago in January 2018, encouraging small business owners and entrepreneurs to take advantage of free mentoring resources on the first Thursday of every month. Through this new service, SCORE Chicago’s business counselors provide confidential mentoring sessions for as long as the client needs. SCORE Business Mentoring at the Library has proved extremely successful. “We seem to really have resonated with new or small local businesses by assessing their needs and objectives, and then guiding them using our experience in business strategy, traditional and digital marketing and sales,” said Branch Manager for SCORE Chicago, Karen Spesard.

Chances are, if you have a child who attends school in Arlington Heights, you’ve heard a story or two about the “library lady” who visited their classroom and read a book or helped them find something great to read when the bookmobile came to their school. That “library lady” was probably me. As School Services Coordinator, I make sure students and their teachers know about all of the wonderful resources the library has to offer. Whether a class needs multiple copies of Newbery award-winning novels or a STEM kit about rocks and minerals, I’m here to connect them with great resources to use in their classroom. I also collaborate with library staff in Programs and Exhibits to bring authors, such as Peter Brown and Ethan Long, into schools to get students excited about reading, writing and creating. While much of my work takes me outside the library, a lot of our work takes place inside the library as well. When homework happens, staff in Kids’ World and the Hub are ready to help your student find information on a famous inventor or connect you with one of our tutoring databases for more in-depth assistance. Whether you’re stumped about a science fiction book for your second-grader’s genre study assignment, or need to help your sophomore get ready for finals, the library can help. One of my favorite projects last school year was working with Kay Lueken, South Middle School’s Library Media Center Director, on a presentation for eighth graders about resume writing and job interviews. After all, a resume or a job interview is really the story of your experience and how you’re the best person for the job. More broadly, I want to help kids and teens in Arlington Heights love and value stories and storytelling. My colleagues and I love helping all readers find their next favorite book, so if you’re ever stumped on an assignment or need the perfect book to be the “mystery reader” at your child’s school, ask for me, and I’ll be happy to help!

Share the Love

through March 31

The opening night party for the library’s newest exhibit, XOXO: An Exhibit About Love & Forgiveness, filled the Marketplace and Kids’ World and gave partygoers of all ages the opportunity to explore the power of feelings on Saturday, January 20. “It’s nice to see so many different families. So many different ages, so many different faces,” said Sheila Whiteside, who came to the party with her husband and two children. “I think [the exhibit] reminds us to come back to the basics. It reminds us of what is really important.” Popular activities in the exhibit include Holding Hands, which allows people to hold hands to get a memorable quote to appear; Talk to Someone, where families can communicate with one another using telephones set up in the library; and Release the Negative, an activity where you can write down negative feelings and send them into a paper shredder. “There’s a lot of things you can do here with people that you love and care about,” said nine-year-old Kanon Koshino as she got ready to send a photo she drew of a thunderstorm into Release the Negative’s paper shredder. “You can show how you feel angry, sad and happy.” The family exhibit is open during regular library hours through Saturday, March 31 in Kids’ World and the Marketplace. This exhibit was created by the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh with support from The Fetzer Institute and is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Library. Keep sharing the love by supporting our Community Food Drive, offered in partnership with Wheeling Township Food Pantry.
