Books, eBooks, music, movies, magazines, audiobooks and downloadables – the list goes on and on of what is available to check out for free from the library in all genres and for all ages. Browse our catalog and “borrow, borrow, borrow and save, save, save.”

4 Find a job or improve your business

We offer countless resources for small businesses, entrepreneurs and those seeking new job or career opportunities. Access our free online databases to do market research or identify new prospects and ways to help grow your business. And it’s never too soon to start honing those job search skills. We’re offering Write Your First Resume, a workshop for high school students to learn to how craft their first resume (p. 14) in preparation for our annual Teen Job Fair in early February.

5 Spend more time with family and friends

Join our Winter Reading Challenge (p. 9, 11 and 12) at ahml.beanstack.org and bond over books. Cozy up and enjoy simple family activities like reading, singing, talking, writing and playing together—all part of the challenge. Our Play, Learn and Grow Together family workshop series (p. 9) returns in January and offers parents, caregivers and children ages 0-3 unique opportunities to spend more time playing and exploring together.

Check out our newly-designed website at ahml.info. Here, you’ll discover an improved catalog search for finding your next book, movie, eBook or music faster and easier. It offers a self-checkout option in the library using your mobile device and allows customers to book directly online any of our 14 conference rooms. You can even translate the new site in more than 100 different languages. Your library user account has been transferred to the new site without any disruption to your account access. MLK Day of Service

Join local organizations to do service projects and give back to your community. Stop by anytime between noon and 3 p.m. to participate in a hands-on service project that will help others. Activities include creating blankets for our neighbors experiencing homelessness and making cards for incarcerated youth. Partners include Journeys | The Road Home and Chicagobased Liberation Library. MLK Day of Service is intended to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social problems and move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”

Victor (Vic) Johnson, who was honored as an Illinois Library Luminary by the Illinois Library Association (ILA) at an awards luncheon in October during the annual conference. Recognizing outstanding voices in the library community while creating a legacy, ILA acknowledged Johnson by saying, “G. Victor (Vic) Johnson served as a dedicated library trustee of the Arlington Heights Memorial Library from 1982 through 2013, more than 30 years. He was known for his tact, approachability and commitment to service, giving an incredible amount of time and effort to benefit libraries on the local, state and national levels.”

Johnson served on the Board of Library Trustees as president for eight years, vice president/secretary for four years and treasurer for nine years. He served on the North Suburban Library System’s board for 19 years, holding positions of treasurer for two years, vice president for two years, and president for three years. He served on the board that oversaw the creation of the Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS) and was a member of ILA’s Trustee Forum Board. Johnson was honored with the ALA Trustee Citation for 2013, the highest award that division bestows.

AARP FOUNDATION TAX-AIDE Free income tax assistance available at the library. Appointments accepted beginning Thursday, January 2. The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program offers free tax preparation help to anyone with special attention to those over the age of 50 who cannot afford a tax preparation service. Appointments are required and run from early February through mid-April. Schedule your appointment in person at the Info Desk or call 847-392-0100. If you have brokerage statements, please make your appointments for late March or early April. All returns will be e-filed, and you will receive a paper copy of your return. If filing a joint return, both spouses must be present, or bring a signed Power of Attorney. Bring the following items to your tax appointment: • Picture ID and Social Security card or SSA-1099. • Copies of all your W-2, 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-R, 1099-B forms for 2019. • Copy of your 2018 federal and state income tax forms filed in 2019. • Receipts and information for all planned itemized deductions (medical and dental expenses, taxes and interest paid, gifts to charities and other deductions). Total your receipts before coming. • Real estate tax bills for property taxes paid in 2019. • Closing statements for any real estate sold in 2019, including original cost of property and cost of any improvements. • Social Security SSA-1099 for 2019. • Railroad retirement forms for 2019, RRB-1099 and RRB-1099R. • Any Affordable Care Act Forms (i.e. 1095-A). • Check from your bank for possible direct deposit or direct debit information. • If using Power of Attorney, you must bring a copy of the official form.
