LIBRARY FEBRUARY 2018

adding value in your life

From our shelves to your home “I love this job. I get paid in thank-yous,” says Larry Larsen, a library volunteer who delivers books to grateful residents like Pamella Davis.

Good things come in a canvas bag thanks to Library Delivery Services, a free program that brings books, movies, music and magazines to Arlington Heights residents who are homebound due to physical limitations or illness. “It’s like Christmas morning. You open up those bags and can hardly wait to see what’s in them,” says Pamella Davis, a voracious reader who twice a month receives five canvas bags filled with books, about 50 titles, delivered to the Arlington Heights health care facility where she lives.

Library Delivery Services is available to any Arlington Heights resident who is unable to visit the library, either long term or for a shorter timeframe due to a setback in health or mobility. Eligible participants meet one-onone with a reader’s advisor from the library to share their tastes in books, movies and music. Staff then carefully select materials to match these preferences to create a customized reader experience. Materials are personally delivered to individuals living in their own homes every four weeks, and every two weeks to residents residing in local health care facilities. “I like a book that reads fast like a movie or TV show…thrillers, romance, westerns,” says Arlington Heights resident Susan Klich, who reads 20 books each month. “I have the library’s phone number memorized. I’ll call over and say ‘can you add this to my list please?’ And they do!” Each month Library Delivery Services visits nearly 100 homes and health care sites and places more than 800 items into the hands of what may be some of the library’s most grateful customers. “It’s a mental thing really that keeps me going on the positive side of glass half-full,” adds Klich. “It just makes me so darn happy.”

Would you or someone you know – a family member, friend or neighbor – benefit from Library Delivery Services? Learn more by contacting the library at 847-870-3712 or through our website at ahml.info/service/library-delivery-services.

“When the library comes it’s just a wonderful feeling,” says Susan Klich, pictured on right.

DEAR

Explore the world in an exhibit

READER

Like a book, an exhibit can change your worldview. Experiencing an exhibit can challenge our assumptions and encourage us to explore our world with a different lens. Exhibits have power to engage us emotionally, physically and intellectually.

Reflection Table, you can focus on overcoming frustration, stress, anger or sadness. A station devoted to Holding Hands with a friend completes a circuit and illuminates a screen. An Art Making Station facilitates relationship building while you create a gift for a loved one.

By hosting exhibits, the library provides a space for visitors to create memories with their loved ones and others in the community through shared interactions. It is my honor to be part of the library’s Programs and Exhibits team. We plan exhibits that foster intergenerational and accessible experiences. We aim to inspire creativity through the use of visual, audio and tactile elements. Our hope is that visitors leave the library feeling refreshed and empowered.

During XOXO, we invite you to share the love in our community. Write a letter to women newly diagnosed with breast cancer through our partnership with Girls Love Mail in February. Donate food at our community food drive that benefits the Wheeling Township Food Pantry in March. Experience the exhibit during our Sensory-Friendly Exhibit Hours especially for those with autism spectrum and sensory processing disorders in both February and March.

Our new all-ages exhibit – XOXO: An Exhibit About Love & Forgiveness (through March) – guides you to explore different dimensions of your emotions and celebrate love in a fun and unique way at 12 interactive stations. At the

Share the Love

Express yourself and explore emotions at XOXO: An Exhibit About Love & Forgiveness, now through March 31 This play exhibit offers families an opportunity to think about and share their feelings through activities designed to help them understand, appreciate and express their emotions.

XOXo An exhibit about

Love & Forgiveness

Illuminate a hidden message about love by Holding Hands. Answer questions about love and forgiveness and share them on the Response Wall. Work together to Balance on a seesaw or connect an infinite Story Puzzle. Build and explore facial expressions using Empathy Blocks. Release the Negative by drawing or writing down what makes you angry or sad then release it through a paper shredder. Speak into Tone Phones and watch how your voice affects shapes on a screen. The exhibit is open during regular library hours and is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Library. XOXO: An Exhibit About Love & Forgiveness was created in 2014 by Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, with support from The Fetzer Institute. To learn more about the exhibit and related programs at the library, visit ahml.info/xoxo.

n Evening of Adult Storytelling

Practice and polish your creative writing at monthly meet-up “My cerebral palsy affects my speech and mobility but not my spirit.” In 12 short words, Arlington Heights resident Esther Lee gives voice to her life’s work: disability law attorney, president of Able Community—a nonprofit housing improving independence for people with disabilities, and writer and creator of poetry with a purpose. “Common themes of my poetry are home, or longing for home, and belonging, or in most cases not belonging,” Lee shared in an email. It was a love for writing poetry that led her to explore Writer’s Ink, the library’s monthly meeting for local writers. Lee, who graduated from Thomas Middle School, holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California Davis, School of Law, focusing on civil rights and public interest law. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, having graduated with honors and an emphasis on creative writing. “I was used to workshopping my poetry with classmates as a rhetoric major in college, but I wasn’t sure what to expect from this group at a public library,” Lee shared. “I was apprehensive (at first), especially being one of the youngest writers there and a poet in a room full of fiction writers. Fortunately, everyone has always been welcoming.” Lee has been participating in Writer’s Ink for about a year. At a Wednesday evening meet-up, she and seven other aspiring writers gathered with writing coach and facilitator Jacob Knabb around a conference room table to share their latest work. Earlier in the day, Lee had emailed Knabb her poem, “There’s An Elephant Living Upstairs,” so that he could read it aloud to the group for critique. She listened attentively and through a computer-activated voice assistance device asked the group if they thought the ending was ‘too easy or too in your face?’ “I like the abruptness of it,” Knabb assured her. “It’s lovely broken into verse, quite perfect in that shape.” “Jacob always strives to give us feedback to improve our writing,” Esther shared following the meeting. “I haven’t worked with many fiction writers, so I am learning more about narrative and memoirs, as there are a lot of memoirists in the group.” “Esther makes them feel a comradery, there’s a certain comfort there,” Knabb added while reflecting on the dynamics of the group. “Her poetry is honest and real and explores topics that allow others in the group to open up.”
