Do You Want to Build a Snowman? December 22–January 8

Embrace the winter season by creating a snow scene of your own! Using air-dry clay, build a snow-person, a snow-creature or snow-whatever-character-you-choose. Each participating family receives a base, a package of clay (one per child) and instructions. Make family memories by working together to create a scene using the provided supplies along with your imagination and your own materials from home. Pick up supplies at the Kids’ World Desk starting Friday, December 22, while supplies last. If you would like to have your creation displayed in Kids’ World, return your entry to the Kids’ World Desk no later than January 8.

Nutcracker from home

Royal Ballet Saturday, December 16 and Sunday, December 17, 8–9 p.m. / Zoom

Get in the spirit of the season with a recorded virtual performance of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker performed by the United Kingdom’s internationally renowned Royal Ballet. The ballet, a holiday staple for all ages, can be viewed Saturday or Sunday. Registrants will receive an email with a special link to the performance. With sumptuous period designs, spellbinding stage effects, and Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, the 2016 performance of The Nutcracker will enchant audiences of all ages. Performed by Britain’s flagship ballet company, registrants can expect to see some of the most elite ballerinas in this performance. This event is made possible by Illinois Libraries Present.

Join us to celebrate everything Pokémon. Learn the Pokémon card game, enjoy some Pokémon themed crafts and compete in a Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet Tournament. for Math and Science Does your kid love math and science, or would they just like to improve their skills? Sign them up for Brilliant.org! Brilliant.org is an online service for learning STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), which has been long available to teachers. The library is now offering free access to Brilliant.org for library cardholders under 18 years old. Courses cover topics such as algebra, physics, scientific thinking and logic, and are presented via puzzles and short interactive lessons, which keeps the process fun and engaging. Users can progress at their own pace from fairly simple to very complex subjects—as far as their interests will take them. To request a Brilliant.org account for your child, visit the Teens>Study, Tweens>Study or Kids’>Learning Resources pages on the library website. Join us for the second installment in our series about important historical locations in Arlington Heights, discussing railroad access, starting with the northwest line of the Illinois and Wisconsin Railroad that William Dunton brought to town in 1853, to the modern Metra line bringing commuters to and from Chicago. Local history and genealogy librarian Eddie Kristan will present the history of Arlington Heights by rail with supporting material from local historians.

Registration for culinary classes begins at 9 a.m. December 2. Culinary program attendees are selected monthly through a lottery system unless otherwise noted. The lottery will remain open for 24 hours, after which individuals will be chosen at random and notified by email on the third of each month. St. John United Church of Christ in Arlington Heights becomes a PADS site on Fridays during the cold season, providing meals and shelter to individuals who are at risk and experiencing homelessness. Work with library staff and neighbors to prepare a nourishing lunch and dinner serving this local cause.

Andrea Pracht of My Kitchen Clatter will teach you how to use three types of ginger in your baking and make two recipes: Mormon Spice Cookies and Gingerbread Cake. Ages 18 and up.

This event is for ages 12 and up. Space is limited. Please limit your registration to two members per household. Service hours will be recorded upon request. The PADS Shelter Program is created in partnership with area faith communities to provide overnight shelter and warm meals to JOURNEYS | The Road Home clients.

The Foundation is looking for your help with its new capital campaign to fund up to $200,000 to help with a future bookmobile purchase.
