LIBRARY DECEMBER 2019
adding value in your life
BOOK DISCUSSION LEADS TO UNEXPECTED CONNECTION by bringing a family scrapbook that held her father’s wedding photos from March 1960, taken just three months after Fulgencio Batista’s presidency was overthrown by Fidel Castro during the Cuban Revolution. “I thought that other people would enjoy seeing what the people in Cuba look like and what they dressed like and what they were doing during that time when the book took place,” she said.
You never know what kind of conversations will take place during one of the library’s many monthly book discussion groups. Esther Collado is one library regular who knew right away she had to participate in our October Novel Experience discussion – even if it meant stopping by after just returning from a trip to Peru that very morning. “This is my family’s story. I could have written it,” Collado said to the group who had all read Chanel Cleeton’s Next Year in Havana, a novel about a Cuban-American woman who travels to Havana to discover the roots of her identity. The protagonist and Collado have striking similarities – both are Cuban-American, both of their families left Cuba following the Cuban Revolution and both have embarked on a path to learn more about their family history.

“I’ve attended a ton of genealogy sessions at the library,” Collado said, talking about how her library genealogy research has inspired her travel to a Mormon library in Utah and to Catholic churches throughout Spain to learn more about her family background. “They sent me on quite the path.” However, it wasn’t just an interest in researching family history that Collado connected to while reading Cleeton’s novel. “The words she used, [how] the family was in exile… [my father] still talks about how he’s in exile even though we’ve been in this country for years,” she said. “Everything that she said in that book are the things I heard growing up, [and] the way she wrote it was very realistic. I think she got it right.” Collado decided to share a special part of her family history with the discussion group

Collado’s story resonated with other participants and sparked conversation. She conversed with another reader from East Germany who also felt a connection to the novel and the idea of losing one’s home, something that happened to many people during the Cuban Revolution. “A lot of those experiences were similar to what happened in Cuba,” Collado said. “Different places in the world had the same type of experience where governments came in or things happened where your life was totally changed.” For Collado, the experience of connecting with other readers and listening to different perspectives made the book discussion worthwhile. “It was definitely a fun one for me because I related so much to the story, but it was fun to also hear other people’s opinions and what they thought about the book,” she said. The next Novel Experience book discussion will take place on Tuesday, December 3.
BOOK DISCUSSIONS DROP IN to join a book discussion. If you need a copy of any of the books, stop by the Info Desk or call 847-392-0100. Discussions take place in the Cardinal Room, unless noted.
