With the library’s new 100 Books Before High School program, readers can read books, earn prizes along the way and keep the fun (and learning) going year-round. Sign up, log books and get more information at ahml.beanstack.org. Just for signing up, you’ll get a cool drawstring backpack to begin your journey. Log every book you read, and for every 20 books logged, you’ll earn a badge and a free book. Stop by the Kids’ World or Hub Desks to choose from our selection of prize books, and get a real-life badge to wear proudly. Library staff can even help you figure out the perfect book to read next on your path to 100! Once you reach the summit of Mount 100 Books, you’ll earn a High School Survival Kit. The tools in the kit were selected by our Teen Advisory Board, and include a USB power bank, mechanical pencil and lead refills, a touch-screen stylus, mints, a super-pack of sticky notes and so much more. Kick-start reading your 100 books at our Reada-Thon events during Winter Break. There’s one for teens on Thursday, January 3 (see page 9) and one for tweens on Friday, January 4 (see page 8). Make giving back your new resolution

As the year ends, and you are planning next year’s resolutions, consider volunteering! The library wants to expand our amazing group of volunteers to assist us in offering an even broader range of services to our community. Volunteering at the library can be more than just shelving books. Our community has many adult English-language learners (ELL) looking for tutors in the evenings and on Saturdays. The library pairs each adult ELL student with a community member, and they meet once a week to practice conversational skills. No foreign language experience is needed, only patience and enjoyment of one-on-one conversation. We encourage those who do speak English as a second language to volunteer for these positions, too.

The library also needs volunteers to teach ESL classes, helping individuals prepare to become United States citizens. Teaching or coaching experience, or familiarity with United States civics information, is useful and additional training will be included for anyone interested in these positions. If teaching or tutoring aren’t for you, consider volunteering in the ESL office answering phones, greeting students and directing them to scheduled sessions. We especially need weekday evening assistants. Another way to assist adult learners in our community is by coaching our tech classes at the library or teaching classes at the Senior Center. For instructors, a background working with technology and experience training adult learners is especially helpful. The library will provide additional training and supply the course curriculum. Do you have professional or personal experience mentoring or coaching individuals with sensory disabilities? If you do, we need your help as we expand our volunteer services to be even more inclusive. Are you a tween or teen looking for service hour opportunities? The easiest way to get started is by attending our monthly Tween Advisory Group or Teen Advisory Board meetings. Regular attendees are then offered additional volunteer opportunities throughout the library, as they arise throughout the school year. Volunteering can enhance the lives of people in your community while enriching your own life. If you are a good fit for these opportunities at the library, please complete our Volunteer Interest form at ahml.info/get_involved/volunteer. If we don’t have the right role for you currently, we will do our best to match your needs and interests as new opportunities emerge.

It is never too early to build your child’s literacy skills. By starting early, you form the foundation for your child’s success later in life. Simple activities involving talking, singing, reading, writing and playing together will help your child. Pick up an activity log in Kids’ World then check off the activities you complete. When you have completed ten, bring the log back and select a free book to take home.

Pick up your Winter Reading Challenge card at the Kids’ World Desk and determine your own reading goal. Whether you keep track of pages, books or time spent reading, use the card to mark your progress. When you are done, come in and select your free book. During the program, drop by the Kids’ World Desk to spin our wheel and receive an activity to take home.

Sign up for Winter Reading and challenge yourself to read something new. Pick up a punch card and a token at the Kids’ World Desk to get started. Let the Challenge Contraption decide your next book or activity. Complete four challenges to earn a free book!

BOOK DISCUSSIONS

Author reminds us to make every day count “Fiction is a place you get to walk in someone else’s shoes,” said author Lisa Genova to an audience of nearly 350 people who came to hear the New York Times bestselling author speak at Forest View Auditorium on October 18 as part of the library’s One Book, One Village (OBOV) community read. Genova talked about her desire to write about topics that can be difficult to talk about, like ALS, a neurological disease that is central to her novel Every Note Played. “I’ve always been interested in the brain and how it works and sometimes breaks,” said Genova, who has a degree in biopsychology and holds a PhD in neuroscience from Harvard University. “To really understand the brain, I had to become a storyteller.” Genova thanked the audience for participating in the library’s fifth annual OBOV. Since the library announced Every Note Played as its selection in August, copies of the book circulated more than 1,800 times. “Usually when I do events like these, few people have read the book,” Genova joked. “So this is amazing.” Lisa Genova’s visit was supported, in part, by the Friends of the Library.
