Wings of hope took flight this fall as young visitors to the library and students in Cape Town, South Africa exchanged messages of peace by creating and trading origami paper cranes in a global initiative known as the Peace Crane Project. The cultural exchange aims to connect children from around the world through the arts and promote peace and understanding. For library visitors, the experience began in September when a DIY art station was set up in Kids’ World, which provided the supplies needed to fold a paper crane or dove. While creating their origami, children were invited to make a peace pledge that stated, “Each crane I fold encloses a thought, a hope, a wish representing my commitment to peace.” Some 50 paper cranes were collected at the library and then mailed to the Loreto Primary School more than 8,000 miles away in Cape Town. There, students had also created origami cranes – destined for the Arlington Heights Memorial Library! On International Peace Day, their teacher emailed the library, “We send messages of peace from our small seaside town at the southernmost tip of Africa. We are thankful to have an opportunity to reach out in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the globe.” The paper cranes arrived at the library from South Africa in late October. Most came with handwritten messages of peace for their friends in Arlington Heights:

“Peace is the way of living life.”

“Peace is not bought, it’s given.”

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Technology changes at a dizzying pace, and keeping up with the latest gadgets, software and apps is challenging. Thatâ€™s why our Digital Services department offers a variety of tech learning support and services to help you keep up with the daily technology demands of your professional and personal lives. Want to learn a new skill? Attend a tech class or check out our online learning platforms. We offer classes on a range of topics, from Microsoft Office to social media, to building your own computer, taught by staff and community experts. AHML cardholders also have access to online training platforms like Lynda.com, Treehouse and Gale Courses, with topics like 3D printing, project management or coding. Want to explore new technology? Stop by the Tech Bar, a rotating, interactive display of gadgets, apps and tech resources. Cardholders can also check out GoPro cameras, an outdoor movie kit, Roku streaming sticks, iPads or a DSLR camera to take home or use in the library. Want to create something new? Reserve space in our Studio where you can record music, shoot and edit photos, capture videos and digitize different media like photos, slides, VHS tapes and film. We are working consistently to update our classes, available technology and online services to meet the changing needs of our customers. TECH BAR

One Book, One Village comes full circle with author Dave Eggers “We choose to live the way we do and participate the way we do,” said Dave Eggers to

an audience of more than 350 people who packed the Forest View Auditorium on October 12 to hear the award-winning writer speak.

Eggers touched on topics like privacy, surveillance and free choice – all central themes in his dystopian novel The Circle, the 2017 One Book, One Village selection for Arlington Heights. In an interview-style program moderated by the library’s Info Services Supervisor Pam Schwarting, Eggers talked about his artistic path and “uninterrupted string of awesome teachers” who helped spark his interest in writing.

#beinthecircle Inspired by The Circle, the library’s #beinthecircle interactive exhibit invited customers to explore how social media influences us, individually and collectively, by writing, drawing or doodling their ideas on iPads in the library’s Marketplace. More than 1,000 responses were shared in the exhibit, including the following:

Eggers told the audience he took notes for 10 years on situations involving individual freedoms and privacy versus society’s safety and right to know before writing The Circle. “I do believe a human under surveillance is not free,” Eggers said. He also described the rise of social media and increased use of measurements as “the new neediness.”

I connect with others by…engaging and listening. In my Utopia, technology would … predict human needs before we know we had them without destroying us. Social media creates… stress. Technology impacts our society by … affecting what we know and how we think about things. When I unplug, I feel … free to explore my own being.

December 18-January 28 It is never too early to build your child’s literacy skills. Simple activities involving talking, singing, reading, writing and playing together will help your child. Check off each of the activities you complete. When you have completed seven, bring the log back and select a free book to keep.

Create your own Winter Reading Challenge. Whether you keep track of pages, books or time spent reading, use the log to mark your progress. When you are done, come in and select your free book. During the program, drop by the Kids’ World Desk to spin the wheel and receive a STEM activity to take home.

Challenge yourself to read and make something new. You decide how much you want to read, and make projects at home or at the library with provided supplies. Drop by the Kids’ World Desk to pick up a new project each week. Once you have completed your reading goal, you can select a free book.

Borrow a projector kit to stage an ‘awesome’ movie night When Lisa Becker and her boyfriend Jack were planning to host the next movie night for their group of friends, the Arlington Heights residents decided to go big.

“We knew we wanted to do a projector, and we planned to rent it,” Becker said. “It was my boyfriend who said, ‘let’s check with the library because they have so much equipment over there.’” “We called and it was a super duper coincidence that the library had just gotten a projector kit, and we could borrow it for free!” The day before their party, Becker picked up the Projector Kit – a quasi-movie theater on wheels. The portable kit includes a projector, cable and adapters for common playback devices, an extension cord and power strip, a Bluetooth sound bar and a collapsible screen that when assembled measures approximately 10 feet wide by 8 feet tall. “The screen is huge,” she laughed. “But it was super easy to set it all up.
