Readers and writers - this is for you! During Lit Month at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, readers can meet many writers, including Greg Kot, author of I’ll Take You There, on April 19. Do you love music? WBEZ Chicago listeners may recognize Kot as the host of the radio talk show, Sound Opinions. Are you a suspense fan? True crime writer Tori Telfer (Lady Killers) will be at the library April 17 and horror novelist Jac Jemc (The Grip of It) will appear April 13. Do you dream of being published? The library and the Village of Arlington Heights Arts Commission will host a panel discussion where participants will be able to network and learn about traditional and self-publishing on April 15. There’s plenty of fun for younger readers, too. Award-winning author Kate DiCamillo, best known for The Tale of Despereaux, will be featured at a special author event at Forest View Auditorium on April 28. Tweens can learn all about ‘zines’ during a workshop with author Celia Pérez (The First Rule of Punk) on April 19 and families are encouraged to visit the library for a book fiesta celebrating Children’s Day and El día de los Libros on April 21. Lit Month is for poetry lovers, too. A hands-on, interactive poetry event featuring Marc Smith, the founder of the poetry slam movement, will be held on April 7. Residents will also be able to converse with “Emily Dickinson” during a onewoman show performed by actress Betsey Means on April 19.

What has six wheels and can bring the library right to your neighborhood? The bookmobile!

READER

The Arlington Heights Memorial Library bookmobile has been rolling for almost 45 years, from its humble beginnings to a full-service mobile library featuring more than 3,000 items on board. Our bookmobile makes 27 different stops in Arlington Heights, from Falcon Park to Lake Terramere, clocking in about 4,000 miles of road time every year. This library on wheels carries many of the latest materials, offering all of the same genres you will find in the main library, but in a cozier space. From books to movies to magazines and more, you are sure to find what youâ€™re looking for. Request your items on our website, then pick up your holds on the bookmobile. Anything checked out from the bookmobile can be returned at our main location, on the bookmobile or at the Senior Center. We are out in the community Monday through Friday, with at least three stops a night, which makes getting library materials even easier for you. Since most stops are scheduled every other week, bookmobile materials have a check out time of at least two weeks. This means you have some extra time to enjoy DVDs and console games checked out with us. You might also see us out at community events, school visits and storytimes in the park. Stop by and join us at one of our almost 900 stops during the year. Our bookmobile staff is coming to your neighborhood, and whether you are a first-time visitor or a regular for over 20 years, we would love to see you. Find the right books

When Arlington Heights resident Denise Wagner volunteered to organize the lunchtime book discussions at her children’s school, she momentarily found herself in a state of panic. “How am I going to choose all these books,” Wagner recalled thinking when she realized it would be up to her to select which books more than a dozen groups of Ivy Hill Elementary School students would read. “I turned to our school librarian and she’s the one who told me, ‘Denise, work with the library, that’s what they’re there for!” Denise reached out to Julie Jurgens, the library’s school services coordinator. They got to work on creating a list together as they explored Kids’ World, selecting titles that would appeal to 20 groups of third- through fifth-graders. Jurgens then visited Ivy Hill and gave a book talk on each title to help the students decide on their favorites. More than 130 students, twice as many as last year, signed up to participate in the lunch-hour, PTA-sponsored program.

“It was so successful this year due in large part to the library’s help in selecting such awesome books to read,” Wagner said. At the end of the six-week program, Wagner wanted an added incentive for the students who traded recess for reading. Once again, she turned to the library, this time shopping at one of the Friends of the Library’s Used Book Sales where she scored big, finding close to 100 reward books at bargain prices. “There’s so much to choose from, it’s fabulous,” she said as she browsed through rows of like-new titles. “The whole idea is to keep them reading. Now that you’ve finished this one, here’s another book you can read.”

SUPER SPRING USED BOOK & MEDIA SALE The Adult Sale will feature nonfiction books, sorted by category; fiction; movies on DVD and Blu-Ray; music on vinyl and CDs; and books on CD. The Children’s Sale features board and picture books, easy readers, novels and nonfiction. Proceeds from memberships and Friends’ used book and media sales are used to enhance our library’s programs and services.

Having an adopted ancestor can be one of the most challenging aspects of genealogy research. Adoption records were not always well kept and legal barriers often hinder searches.
