On 27 July 2019, PTP recorded another significant milestone when PTP became the first and only port in South East Asia to welcome Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) latest and largest container vessel as part of its maiden voyage in the South East Asia region.

The historic calling of MSC Gulsun has also led to another world record breaking record when the vessel left the port on 28 July 2019 with record load of 19,754 TEUs, surpassing record load of 19,284 TEUs set by Monaco Maersk vessel in June earlier this year.

N4 GO LIVE AT PTP PTP successfully accomplished what many assumed was impossible, migration of one of the single biggest facilities in the world without any critical disruption to our daily port operations.

In line with PTP’s aspiration to become a port which operates and offers smart solutions that will help optimise operations, promote efficiency and reduce logistics costs in a safe environment, implementing Navis N4 is an utmost important project this year. After almost two and a half years’ worth of planning and preparation, involving more than 300 personnel from PTP, Navis, APMT, vendors and business partners, N4 system has successfully gone live on the 11th of July.

N4 project in PTP context was a mega project for a mega port as it has never been implemented in any part of the world before in this scale and size as one single terminal. The project team worked hard to ensure that the system is PTP ready and that the entire network including the wired network, 4G network with more than 600 devices and chain management brought together with it is the database of the system, everything had to be tested in the stress manner to ensure that it was fully working and ready for PTP. The successful implementation of the system puts PTP at the position where it is ready for future growth and effciency and continue to be part of world class container terminal that PTP is.

Overview of N4 Project History - Project was kicked off in April 2016 with expected go-live in first half of 2017 - During 2017, stress tests showed that N4 wasn’t PTP ready - PTP and Navis have worked closely since to get the product ready and in Jan 2019, it finally passed the stress test - After 5 rounds of stress tests and 4 rounds of full functional and E2E tests and 4 month of intensive training of PTP staff, we are finally ready for Go-Live

HIGHLIGHT PTP RECEIVED RECOGNITION IN MMC GROUP CEO OF THE YEAR AWARD 2018 On 16 August 2019, PTP positive track record in delivering world class service to our customers and stakeholders was recognized and celebrated when we were awarded with the MMC Group CEO Of The Year Award for the team’s outstanding achievement and remarkable feats throughout 2018.

The award was given to an organisation within the MMC Group in recognising outstanding performance and achievement in the areas of revenue growth, business profitability and productivity.

In 2018, PTP recorded a positive growth in revenue, an increase in Profit After Tax and Minority Interest (PATMI), stable dividend as well as a world record in becoming the first port in the world to have a vessel depart with a final load more than 19,000 TEUs. The fact that all these achievements were attained at the back of challenging market condition is even more remarkable.

As a leading ports and logistics operator, we take pride in our ability to anticipate and understand the needs of our customers and other stakeholders. For PTP to receive the award and recognition by MMC Group, is a testament of everyone’s continuous effort, dedication and hard works as one unified team.

PTP WELCOMES YB MOHD SOLIHAN BIN BADRI, JOHOR STATE PUBLIC WORKS, INFRASTRUCTURE AND TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN

On 22 July 2019, PTP received a one – day courtesy and familiarisation visit from YB Mohd Solihan Bin Badri, Johor State Public Works, Infrastructure & Transportation Committee Chairman and his delegation.

YB Mohd Solihan Bin Badri and delegates was warmly welcomed by PTP Chief Executive Officer, Marco Neelsen and members of PTP Management Team.

Also present during the visit were General Manager of Lembaga Pelabuhan Johor, Muhammad Razif Ahmad, along with several senior officers from Johor State Economic Planning Unit, PLAN Malaysia, Immigration Department, Royal Custom Malaysia and Iskandar Puteri City Council as well as several PTP Senior Management Team.

The agenda of the visit included a comprehensive presentation on PTP’s operational performances, the ports progress and its on-going development. The delegation was then taken to Marine Control Centre, Level 7, Wisma A before preceded for a boat tour to see future development of PTP container terminal and Free Zone area.

DEPUTY CHIEF MINISTER OF SABAH IMPRESSED WITH PORT OF TANJUNG PELEPAS On 25 July 2019, PTP, welcomed YB Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau, Deputy Chief Minister Of Sabah who is also the Minister of Trade and Industry of Sabah State Government and his delegation as part of his working visit to Peninsular Malaysia.

The delegation, comprised of government bodies and prominent private organizations from Sabah was warmly welcomed by PTP Chief Executive Officer, Marco Neelsen and members of PTP Management team.

Following the presentation on PTP and tour of the Marine Control Centre at Level 7, Wisma A and the port’s terminal, YB Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau, Deputy Chief Minister of Sabah expressed his overwhelmed feeling with PTP’s capacity and capability to handle current generation of ultra-large vessels with its state of the art equipment and technology in marine industry.

With the knowledge obtained from this visit, YB Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau, Deputy Chief Minister of Sabah hopes that ports in Sabah will be able to emulate PTP’s success and contribute to the growth and economy of the nation.

CORPORATE On 31 July 2019, PTP welcomed a delegation from Ministry of Transport, Thailand as part of its familiarisation visit to PTP. The delegation, consisting of members of the Ministry of Transport Thailand, Marine Department of Thailand, Department of Aviation, Thailand Port Authority and several other government bodies was led by Mr. Phairoj Ngamjarus, Director of Human Resource Management Division, from Office of Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Transport.

The delegation was welcomed by PTP Head of Commercial, Prakash Thurairasasingam, along with several members of PTP Management Team.

The visit kicked off at Boardroom, Level 5 Wisma A with a comprehensive briefing on PTP’s operational and core businesses, on-going development and future plan.

MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT, THAILAND PLANS TO EMULATE PTP’S MANAGEMENT AND STRATEGIES

The delegations were then ushered for a visit to the Marine Control Centre, Level 7 Wisma A PTP before proceeding to visit both Terminal and Free Zone District B for an overview of PTP’s day to day free zone operations.

Head of delegation, Mr. Phairoj Ngamjarus during his speech had remarked that PTP, with its sound business strategy, good operations track record and progressive growth started operations in early 2000 is deemed by the Ministry of Transport Thailand as the best port of choice that the Ministry can learn from and hopeful to emulate.

On 23 June 2019, PTP, Johor Port Berhad (JPB), Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATSSB) and Senai Airport City Sdn Bhd (SAC), southern based subsidiaries company of MMC Corporation Berhad had organized a joint Hari Raya gathering event for customers and stakeholders as part of the companies’ engagement initiative.

The annual festive event which was held at Mutiara Hotel, Johor Bahru since 2011 was attended by more than 900 guests from various companies and government agencies.

Among the honorary guests attended the event were YB Mohd Solihan Badri, Chairman of Johor Work, Infrastructure and Transportation Committee; YB Haji Tosrin Jarvanthi, Chairman of Johor Islamic Affairs, Agriculture and Rural Development Committee; Rosnan Fathlal, Chairman of Lembaga Pelabuhan Johor; Dickson Abdullah, Head of Marine Department Southern Regional Office; Zuazizie Zulkefli, State Director of Matrade; Sabariah Mohd Sofian, Director of MITI Southern Regional Office Rajpal Singh, Singapore Consulate to Malaysia; Stephanie Lim, President of Johor Ports Shipping & Forwarding Association; Andrea Fornaro, Deputy General Director, PGS (East Asia) Pte Ltd and Gui Boon Sui Charirman of Regency Steel Asia Pte Ltd. Together present during the event were, Dato' Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh, MMC Group Managing Director; Marco Neelsen, CEO of PTP; Shahrull Allam Shah Abdul Halim CEO of JPB; Md Derick Basir CEO of SATSSB, Gan Seng Keong General Manager, Group Property of MMC Berhad, State and Federal Government Officials, customers, associates, media members as well as senior management team members from the respective subsidiaries companies.

Apart from being treated with delectable Hari Raya dishes, the event has provided an excellent platform for the companies to network and strengthen the relationship between business partners and government agencies in the spirit of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

PROCUREMENT AND TENDER SECRETARIAT (PATS) VENDOR DAY

On 3 May 2019, Procurement and Tender Secretariat Department (PATS) has succesfully organized the first PTP Vendor Day event which took place at Foyer Wisma B, PTP in order to provide the highest level of quality to achieve world class port services.

The main objective of this one day event was to give opportunities for potential vendors to be part of PTP growth plan.

2 existing vendors and 13 new vendors with different business scope such as PPE equipment, waste management, motor and hoist, refurbishment, lubricant, sensor, brake and lighting service providers participated in this event where they get to display new products and technologies or services in the current port industries accordingly.

More than 300 participants consisting of PTP employees, subsidiaries of MMC Group representatives and all PTP Free Zone tenants.

Moreover, food truck vendors were also invited on that day to attract more participants to join the event.

As an overview, in PTP, the Compliance function aims to establish global standards and procedures aimed at reducing improper, illegal or unethical conduct and ensure that such standards are institutionalized throughout PTP, which in turn translates to mitigated levels of risk for PTP. What do you need to do as an employee of PTP?

EVERGREEN LINE’S NEW G TYPE VESSEL WITH 21,000 TEU CAPACITY MAKES MAIDEN VOYAGE TO PTP

On 26 May 2019, PTP had welcomed a maiden voyage event for Evergreen Line’s latest generation of G Type vessel named Ever Glory calling at the port. The vessel, which is owned by Evergreen Marine Corporation (EMC), is on its journey from Yantian, China to Europe.

The maiden voyage of Ever Glory to PTP was commemorated at a special event held on the same date and attended by representatives from both PTP and EMC including Marco Neelsen, Chief Executive Officer of PTP and Yen Chia-Cheng, President of Evergreen Marine Corporation (M).

Ever Glory vessel adopts the most advanced shipbuilding technologies and measure at about 400 meters in length and about 59 meters wide. In line with the stringent eco-friendly criteria that EMC has imposed on its own operation, Ever Glory vessel is equipped with various environmental protection devices and fully complies with the regulations of international maritime agencies. The ship's new generation G-type main engine is developed with a longer stroke to operate at lower speeds with capability to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emission up to 7 % than traditional main engines.

DECATHLON SETS UP REGIONAL DISTRIBUTION CENTRE IN PORT OF TANJUNG PELEPAS FREE ZONE On 8 July 2019, PTP had officially welcomed and witnessed the inauguration ceremony of Decathlon Regional Distribution Centre for South East Asia (SEA) region held at Decathlon Logistics Malaysia facility in District Park B, PTP Free Zone area.

The event was graced by several high profile dignitaries such as Yves Claude, Chief Executive Officer of Decathlon, Nils Swolkien, Managing Director of Decathlon Singapore, Jorge Reyes Sanchez, Director of Decathlon Logistics Malaysia Sdn Bhd. PTP officials were represented by Marco Neelsen, Chief Executive Officer of PTP and Prakash Thurairasasingam, Head of Commercial as well as several Management Team respectively.

Decathlon is a French sporting good retailer. With over 1500 stores in 49 countries, it is the largest sporting goods retailer in the world. The opening of Decathlon Regional Distribution Centre for South East marks a major milestone for PTP in 2019 as it further strengthen its Free Zone area as the preferred distribution hub in the region and potentially pave way for more established world renowned companies to invest and set up their own distribution hub in PTP. Prior, PTP has also successfully secured various global brands such as Karcher, Volkswagen, Coles, Target, Steinhoff, Cotton On and H&M as among the world’s popular brand to set up their regional distribution hub in PTP.

PTP LEAN DOJO HOME OF THE LEAN FOR ALL The PTP Lean Dojo, first opened its doors in March 2019. This is a space where people get trained, develop, engage, connect, think, reflect and make improvements.

Lean For All (LFA) movement started at PTP back in October 2018. PTP will eventually on board more than 3000 people to LFA. With so many people to train, the need for a dedicated space to do on boarding and trainings became apparent.

As such the Academy Partner (Amit Khindriya) and Hub Transformation Leader (Ryan Jones) initiated the idea to have a home for Lean at PTP. The idea was fully supported by PTP Leadership, especially COO, Joe Schofield who was instrumental in getting a vacant space of 2000sqft at Wisma B. This space, now known as the Lean Dojo is inspired from Toyota as a space for learning and reflection. The word Dojo comes from Japanese culture as a space for immersive learning and Hansei.

The transformation of the vacant space to Lean Dojo took around two months. The work included painting the walls, carpeting the entire floor space, tinting of the glass panels, installing projector, screen, and sound system, as well as tables and chairs for students.

A shoe-free space that can accommodate up to 50 people at one time. It’s cosy and comfortable with dark colour carpeted floor, and the green scenery from a small park outside of the Lean Dojo can be seen through the glass panels.

The Dojo is a “5S territory” and visually communicates the salient concepts of 5S. For example all training materials are labeled and kept in the dedicated space, all tables tops have tapes to show what goes where.

The Dojo has been fully utilised almost every week. More than 400 people have benefited from the Lean Dojo where they’ve completed their LFA on boarding session. Apart from Level 2 and 3 classes, Level 4 kick off meeting was also done in the Dojo.

On 10th May 2019, entire PTP SMT spent one full day at the Dojo attending the Leadership On Boarding.

The Lean Dojo of PTP is surely becoming more than a training place. It is a space where people grow, a place where people start to connect and share their ideas, from the top management.

VISUAL STANDARDS MANUAL SAFETY CAN BE SIMPLE. SAFETY MUST BE RELEVANT. The latest version of Visual Standards was issued on 3 June 2019 by the Operations Division of PTP. What is the purpose of Visual Standards?

- To prevent serious injuries - To empower Supervisors to manage safety in PTP way - To give clear advice on what good and bad safety looks like

Why visual standards now?

- Thiagu Krishnan, Teminal Operations General Manager expressed his concerns that a lasher may suffer an injury and wanted to avoid that from happening - Conducted an onboard survey related to lashing and unlashing activity - Reached out to Deborah Clements (HSE Improvement) for assistance to improve overall safety performance especially related to stevedores (high risk)

- Hearing this information, Ganga Devi Painadu, Contractor Management Manager for the Lashing Vendors called an urgent meeting with all Lashing Vendors - Meeting was to address safety measures in place and who was responsible?

- There were clear gaps and Visual Standards could be the solution - Vendors took ownership and develop visual standards for their learning

How to launch visual standards?

- Took directions from Chandran Raman Kutty, Cargo Services General Manager - Suggested to take a top down approach with the vendor company Directors taking the lead on this to ensure the right message flows through the respective companies - Provide coaching for the supervisory level of both PTP and vendors to empower them to take responsibility - There would be only one standard for both PTP and vendors

What do the visual standards mean to Joe Schoefield, Chief Operating Officer?

“I welcome -

the new Visual Standards as a way of demystifying safety as opposed to complex Standard Operating Procedures.

I see - this as a great starting point for PTP, something to expand to all -areas. I expect the visual standards to evolve and grow driven by operational requirements. Visual Standards are not a safety policy, they are a PTP way of working. They are sustainable; easy to develop and deploy. I am excited about this stage in our safety journey�

PTP INKS AGREEMENT WITH NIOSH TO DEVELOP COMPREHENSIVE SAFETY TRAINING PROGRAM TO EMPOWER SAFETY CULTURE AMONGST THE PORT WORKERS

On 21 May 2019, PTP has successfully sealed an agreement with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to develop a comprehensive HSE training, called Port Safety Passport Program for the port workers.

Under the program, PTP and NIOSH will collaborate to develop and implement a training program specially designed as an introductory training module for contractors who are working or going to work in the port industry, especially in PTP. The signing ceremony was held at Port Briefing Room, Wisma A PTP between Marco Neelsen, Chief Executive Officer of PTP and Ayop Salleh, Executive Director of NIOSH. The signing ceremony was also witnessed by Mohamed Hazaluddin Hashim, PTP Head of Health, Safety, Security & Environment Division and Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, Chairman of NIOSH. Also in attendance were Ir. Ahmad Jailani Bin Mansor, Johor State Deputy Director of the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), as well as several senior management personnel from both PTP and NIOSH. PTP Safety Passport Program aims to cultivate the safety first culture and to provide fundamental occupational safety and health training for workers on the hazards and risks present in the port industry prior to their entry into the industry. The program will provide workers the knowledge and information on OSH legal requirements and also PTP’s Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) requirements and expectations.

PTP proactively promotes occupational safety programs at workplace, conduct safety and health campaigns as well as implement employees’ wellness programmes in order to reduce workplace accidents help protect the employees while at the same time increase productivity.

On 18 June 2019 , PTP has successfully signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Terberg Tractors Malaysia (TTM) to develop a comprehensive study on the viability of deploying autonomous driving terminal tractors to transfer containers within the terminal.

Yang Berhormat Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport, Mohd Solihan Bin Badri, Johor State Public Works, Infrastructure and Transportation Committee Chairman, Sr. Dzulkefly Bin Ahmad, ADUN Kota Iskandar / Johor State Housing, Communication and Multimedia Committee Chairman, Christoph Prommersberger, representative from the Kingdom of the Netherlands Embassy for Malaysia and Rosnan Fathlal, Chairman of Johor Port Authority were present during the MOU Signing Ceremony.

The agreement was inked between Marco Neelsen, Chief Executive Officer of PTP and Boo Wei Ching, a member of the Board of Directors, TTM and witnessed by Yang Berhormat Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport together with Dato Sri Che Khalib Bin Mohamad Noh, Chairman of PTP and George Terberg, Chairman of The Royal Terberg Group.

PTP remains competitive in establishing its terminal as one of the best equipped and most technologically advanced terminal port in the region. All this is in line with PTP’s aspiration to become an advanced preferred port in the region. A port which operates and offers smart solutions that will help optimise operations, promote efficiency and reduce logistics costs in a safe environment.

ENGINEERING AND FACILITIES HARI RAYA EVENT 2019 On 3 July 2019, Engineering and Facilities organized their annual Engineering & Facilities Division Hari Raya event at Engineering parking lot which was attended by more than 300 Engineering & Facilities staff.

With the objective to celebrate Hari Raya with all Engineering & Facilities staff, the event was attended by Mr Marco Neelsen, CEO PTP, Mr Hesham Ahmed, Interim HOEF and a few external staff from various Division that has a working relationship with Engineering & Facilities.

Plenty of food was served throughout the event with karaoke as entertainment for the staff and guest. The event ended successfully at 8.00pm and kudos to the committee for the effort put in.

PTP PROMOTES UNITY AND HARMONY DURING HARI RAYA, NGILING BIDAI AND KAAMATAN CELEBRATION On 5 July 2019, PTP, held a triple festive celebration - Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Ngiling Bidai and Kaamatan to promote unity, harmony as well as to uphold the spirit of thoughtfulness among the staff.

Aptly themed “Let’s Celebrate!”, the event which was held at PTP Port Parallel Building parking space saw more than 1500 PTP staff all gathered together in a joyous festive mood.

Present during the event was Marco Neelsen, Chief Executive Officer of PTP as well as several PTP Senior Management Team, Head of Departments and PTP Union Representatives.

The attendees were treated to a sumptuous variety of traditional Hari Raya dishes while being entertained by insightful activities such as zapin, busking, marhaban and many more.

PTP Hari Raya Gathering & Ngiling Badai & Kaamatan celebration are part of annual PTP almanac aims to share joyous feelings amongst PTP staff regardless of their background and religion. It is indeed a great sight to see all PTP staffs, irrespective of their religion, celebrating the festival.

BINTULU PORT GROUP INTERNAL AUDIT BENCHMARKING VISIT TO PTP

On 8 April 2019, PTP Internal Audit Department (“IAD”) received a study visit from Group Internal Audit of Bintulu Port Holdings with 4 delegates present. Since PTP is more or less similar to Bintulu Port in terms of industry and size, PTP was chosen as one of the benchmarks in terms of port and logistics internal audit practices. The visit was also part of their Leadership Development Program (LDP).

PTP Internal Audit team, led by Ts Log Dr Othman Ibrahim gave the delegates a warm welcome and shared our experience and work process in line with the current COSO guidelines and practice.

PTP INTERNAL AUDIT ATTENDS IDEA DATA ANALYSIS TRAINING LEVEL 1 From 5 - 6 March 2019, Internal Audit Department (IAD) attended an In-House Training session on IDEA Data Analysis (Level 1). The training was conducted by Andrea Brandle, Regional Training Director from Business Ware Solutions, Singapore.

The purpose of this course is to get users to familiarize themselves with the new method of data mining using IDEA’s Basic Software functionality and tools. The training gave users exposure plus hands-on experience on the software which included exercises as well as case studies via a customize IDEA Tutorial software.

After completing this training, participants will be able to: - Understand the purpose and features of IDEA. - Consider business objectives to which IDEA can be applied.

- Determine the data required and import the data.

- Use IDEA in Data Analytics to increase efficiency and effectiveness

JOHOR PORT AUTHORITY (JPA) GREEN INITIATIVES 2018 ACHIEVEMENTS Sustainable Project 2018 – Installation of PV Solar Lembaga Pelabuhan Johor (LPJ) intends to improve the current green building rating under “Penarafan Hijau JKR” (PH JKR) for LPJ Headquarters Pasir Gudang from three star to five star.

During International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia (IGEM) 2016, LPJ has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (MGTC), where the aim of the MOU is to implement “Sustainable Project 2016 -2018 ” with the goal to improve the rating of “Penarafan Hijau JKR”.

From the MOU signed, long-term projects were implemented and completed as follows: 2016 Implementation of Energy Audit for LPJ Headquarters.

Implementation of Government Green Procurement Policy.

2017 Replacement of Existing Fluorescent Lights to LED Lights.

2018 Installation of Solar PV System at LPJ Headquarters.

Achievement Solar PV system was successfully installed on 21 November 2018.

Utility Savings (Electricity) Target 5% reduction of electricity consumption in year 2018.

STEVEN YOOGALINGAM

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF AQABA CONTAINER TERMINAL

Steven Yoogalingam is a name that requires no introduction amongst PTPians. Having served PTP in various positions, including as interim CEO in 2016, he is now plying his trade in Middle East.

Steven is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) having joined the port since July 2017. Steven has also previously worked in a number of ports around the world, including at Penang Port, Jebel Ali in Dubai, and Busan Newport in South Korea.

Read on below as he shares his experience at ACT and fondly recalls the memories he has of PTP.

Hi Steven. Thank you very much for agreeing to be interviewed for PTP’s internal newsletter, Pelepas Insight. So, how do you find Aqaba since joining in July 2017?

Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) is the main gateway to Jordan.

Since ACT is the only port here, it contributes greatly to Jordan’s economic growth as well as making Jordan a trade hub in the region.

Since its inception, ACT has accomplished much more than just becoming the preferred gateway to the region and Jordan’s first choice for the importing and exporting of goods. The port has worked long and hard to establish itself within its local area as a force for good, and a trusted partner that benefits the community at large.

As a national asset, ACT goes far beyond just providing work for its employees and the locals. It contributes actively to the security of the nation, social development and quality of life of people from the seaside city as much as from the more remote areas and villages.

As the CEO of ACT, I engage a lot with our stakeholders. About half of my time here is spent managing government officials, customers, associations, chamber representatives and many others to ensure that our day to day operations are smooth and that we are aligned to the aspiration of the government.

Being in Middle East, surrounded with unpredictable political environment also requires us to be vigilant especially in terms of following procedures. However, the government has really been supportive towards our development and growth.

I have been in ACT for 2 years now and personally I am really enjoying my time here. We have a highly committed and progressive team here, much like in PTP. Although language can be a barrier since most of the workforce speak in Arabic, I can still communicate with them via a translator. To me, that is only one of the obstacles and challenges of working in a foreign country and we always find ways to work around it.

What was the most challenging obstacle you had to face during your tenure as PTP’s Interim CEO? I think it is always a challenge to fill a position for a short period and still bring value in that time. I learnt a lot from my experience as interim CEO and will always be thankful for the great support I had from my colleagues and the rest of PTP staff at that point of time.

I remember that the oil spill incident in 2016 was really a challenge since it was an unchartered territory to many of us.

Despite that, I think the entire team had handled the crisis remarkably. From the Operations team led by Laurids and Captain Akashah, Commercial team led by Prakash and the Corporate Communications team who had helped us to manage the media and staff, everyone had done their best part to help the company to manage the incident accordingly.

It was a difficult experience and it wasn’t good for PTP, but I think the way we managed it was the best we can do. We learnt a lot from the experience, especially in terms of how to manage those situations effectively.

One of the lessons learnt that I really seized from the incident was the importance of finding the time to explain to the staff on what was going on even when we were so busy managing the customers and crisis. We should have done that earlier, to get people to understand what’s happening in the company.

What was your most memorable experience at PTP? I look back positively on my time with the Operations Department. It was really a lively and dynamic place to work.

You know when you go to Operations floor there would be a lot of buzz, a lot of activities going on, people making a lot of noise and they were always on the move.

I’m very happy to see today, there’s a lot of very good reports about PTP productivity and performance. I see every month there’s productivity achievement. That makes me very happy that PTP, especially the Operations team is doing well. Because of the dynamic and very committed Operations team, I have very good memories about the place and the people.

What was the turning point of your career?

Moving into a leadership role in Penang Port within MMC was a turning point. Everything I learnt in PTP enabled me to take on that role with confidence.

How long you were with Penang Port and what was the first thing you did to manage the situation at Penang Port upon joining?

How about outside of work?

I enjoy playing golf. It’s very therapeutic because when I’m on the golf course, I can easily separate my mind from work.

Name one thing your colleagues do not know about you.

I think my colleagues knew me quite well as I am friendly in nature once we get to know each other. But if I need to name one, I’ll would say that I am an avid sportsman.

Influenced by my father, I started playing tennis since the age of 4 and I was actively involved in Malaysia junior national circuit. I represented the state of Johor in Malaysian Games (SUKMA) 2000 held in Penang where the team lost in the quarterfinals and during my university days, I also represented Universiti Utara Malaysia to compete in Majlis Sukan Universiti Malaysia (MASUM) Sport Carnival and in my first year we managed to qualify for the finals for the first time in history.

Aside to tennis, I am very active in football. In PTP for example, I was the one who reinitiated the existence of PTP FC in 2018.

Football has always been with me because my dad is also a footballer who used to play in Malaysia local league.

ERIC YAP CHEE MENG GENERAL MANAGER, BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

Tell us a bit about yourself and how long have you worked at PTP? My name is Eric Yap Chee Meng and I am currently holding the General Manager position of Business Development Department, Commercial Division reporting directly to the Head of Commercial.

Right after completing my tertiary education, I joined PTP on 1 August 2005 and have been attached with the organization since, apart from a one-year stint in Johor Port Berhad.

I started off my career in PTP as a Management Trainee where I was given the opportunity to understand the heart of PTP core business, specifically on the container terminal operation. I must acknowledge that the program provides me with a comprehensive knowledge especially for individual with zero knowledge on port operations. I didn’t even know that PTP existed at that point of time and was kind of surprised with the magnitude of the terminal when I came for interview.

Following the completion of my Management Trainee program, I opted to join Property & Free Zone Department as a steppingstone as my next plan was to join the Commercial team which are looking at a larger profile of the business i.e. shipping lines.

Since then, I managed to climb the corporate ladder until recently I was promoted to a position as General Manager. On the personal side, I was born and raised in Segamat, Johor. I am married to a wonderful Portuguese girl from Melaka and we have been blessed with 2 amazing boys aged 8 and 5 years old respectively. As for my education background, I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Universiti Utara Malaysia.

What do you enjoy the most about your work?

The way I see it, PTP is relatively still a young organization with young work force in average. I joined the organization when PTP just completed their Phase 1 development with 6 berths with 14 cranes. As such, what I enjoy most working in PTP is working with individuals that are passionate, driven by result and continuously trying to improve the performance of the organization.

To me, everyone here works on a professional context. We may argue or have disagreement, but it is all on a professional manner, with the aim to make things work for the company. Nothing is personal because beyond office hours, we know that we are still friends, irrespective of our position. I also enjoy being in a working culture where everyone is continuously trying to improve and proactively taking on challenges.

On top of that, with MMC and APMT as our shareholders, it enables us to get wide-ranging international exposure. To date, I have worked with many CEOs from diverse background and each of them teaches me great knowledge and insights on the business as well as on leadership.

What is your best achievement so far working in PTP? Career wise, being the youngest General Manager within PTP is a feat that I am really proud of. In addition to that, I also took pride in developing and bring progress to the organization to where it is today.

What would you like to see in the future at PTP and your role in it?

For me, I would like to see PTP moving ahead in the right direction as I believe the future is indeed bright for PTP. The local cargo is definitely the future of PTP and we need to develop more of this “sticky� volume through our free zone and the gateway cargo and that is where my current role is. In addition, I am also responsible for the non-core container portfolios including government agencies on commercial related matters.

What do you enjoy the most about your work?

Here in PTP, I love the positive environment and I really enjoy working with my friends. They are like my family. I am an easy-going person and that makes it easier to befriend with anybody around me.

What are the things that your colleagues do not know about you?

I like to explore new things and I love to follow trends especially in fashion. I will keep my money for few months just to buy trending clothes that I aimed for.

When I am not working, I prefer to stay in my room, listening to music while writing in my book, expressing my thoughts.

What is the biggest challenge in your job?

My biggest challenge in my job is when an issue arises around me. It requires me to act spontaneously where I must inform and communicate directly with my superior and ensure the area around me and my friend is safe and sound.

What is your life motto?

My life motto is if other people can do it, then I can do it too. It is not impossible for me to do it.

As such, we need to try to do new things for us to move forward in our life.

Tell us a bit about yourself and how long have you worked at PTP? I joined PTP as QCC Operator on 18 January 2016 and I have been working here for almost 4 years.

What would you like to see in the future at PTP and your role in it?

What I would like to see in the future at PTP is for PTP to expand more and we as the staff get to be involved in every process which will contribute to PTP’s achievement.

Previously I worked under the logistic management at Brothers company in Johor but I went back to Negeri Sembilan to take care of my Mother. After few years, I came to Johor again and worked at TDK factory and received the Best Employee Award at the company.

Moving forward, I also wish to see and participate in more staff activities in PTP and at the same time to perform better at my job so that I will be able to climb the career ladder in future.

I started to learn about PTP from my friend who invited me to apply for a job at PTP through Facebook Job Ads. Since then, I have been attached with Operations up until now.

Alhamdullillah, for this year, I appeared twice as top 10 QCC performer for the month of February and July 2019.

On the personal side, I’m from Negeri Sembilan and I am the youngest out of 6 siblings.
