Our positive track record of achieving annual volume throughput growth is demonstrated by our success in handling a total of 9.0 million TEUs as compared to 8.4 million TEUs recorded in 2017. The increase in total throughput has been mainly due to our focus in constant investment towards developing our human capital, dependability and reliability of equipment and facilities, improvement of productivity, customers’ satisfaction and the constant strengthening of our stakeholder relations.
A significant investment was made towards our equipment acquisition, preventive maintenance initiatives as well infrastructure upgrading programme. Early last year, we finally welcome another 4 of the region’s tallest ship-to-shore Quay Cranes, in addition to the 4 existing cranes we received at end of 2017. Apart from the quay cranes, we have also inked a collaboration agreement to refurbish a fleet of 35 existing IMPSA RTGs as well as the 120 Terberg Prime Movers.
In 2018, we became the first port in the world to depart a vessel with a final load over 19,000 TEUs. The milestone was accomplished on 18 August 2018 when Mumbai Maersk, one of Maersk’s 2nd Generation Triple-E vessels left our terminal with the record load of 19,038 TEUs. In terms of infrastructure upgrading, Berth 5 and 6 have been successfully upgraded in February 2018 and for the channel dredging works, which will increase the current draft from 16 meters to 18.5 meters, the project is now 95% accomplished and is expected to be completed soon.
There is no doubt that our workforce is the key asset for PTP. It is with the determination and dedication of our people that we continuously generate long-term value for our stakeholders. To date, the company has invested a substantial amount of budget to continuously equip our staff with functional, technical and leadership skills to ensure sustainability and future success of the company. In November 2018, PTP’s commitment in supporting national human capital agenda of growing Malaysia’s skilled workforce continues with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between PTP and the Ministry of Education (MOE). This initiative aspires to establish links between the academia and the industry and build more collaborative networking in human capital development and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

CORPORATE INTEGRITY The word integrity has been given a wide meaning; the most common reference to integrity is consistency in uprightness. Consistency has been identified as the key component in determining an integrity act. As integrity actions refer to alignment between what one does and what one says, it was asserted that doing and saying should belong to the same hole where a person with integrity is usually seen as being consistent between their actions and what they purport to honour. Their upright conduct is made possible through steadfast adherence to unbending principles and standards, and his character has been marked by an undaunted quest for important ends far larger than his own needs, comfort and interest.
Corporate integrity is measured by what a company does or does not do even when no one is looking. Integrity is violated when corporate governance policies and procedures are disregarded in the quest for personal and corporate gain. Corporate integrity is ultimately dependent on the application of the right values in day-to-day decision making in the business. Relevant and proportionate policies, procedures and controls operating within an appropriate compliance framework provide critical support in driving the right values through the business. To be effective compliance needs to actively support and guide all business decisions so that they are made in full awareness of, and in agreement with your organisation’s purpose, culture and values. When combined, a culture of integrity and strong compliance framework will allow us to confidently state: “Our people understand the right thing to do, we do the right thing and we know we do the right thing. MY HEALTHY PLATE In Malaysia, healthy plate is one of the easiest guideline for healthy eating. The Malaysian ministry introduce #suku-sukuseparuh or ‘Quarter-Quarter –Half’ campaign health late 2016 to promote healthy eating habits among Malaysians. It was reported that only 6 percent of Malaysian adult consumed sufficient fruits and vegetables in 2015 compared to 7.5 percent in 2011. Think of your plate divided into two quarter and one half, and this is how much proteins, grains, fruits and vegetable you should be having every meal. The recommended portions for a healthy meal are a quarter for grains like rice, another quarter for protein like chicken, meat, seafood, bean products and half for fruits and vegetables. Remind to find your healthy eating style and build it through your lifetime, everything you eat and drink matters. The right mix can help you be healthier now and in the future. This means;
Taking all the issues into consideration, “My Healthy plate” program is one of the Health Safety and Environment Department Initiative to promote healthier food to all PTP staff. LEAN FOR ALL PROGRAM
Most of the time we are very busy working. However, do we think if what we are doing is actually adding “value” or is this “waste”? To determine this we must first know what value is and waste from the lean perspective. This is exactly what the Lean for All Program has been designed for. Lean is an approach to continuous improvement that was made popular by Toyota in the 1960s. In the last 15 years, lean has been adopted by more and more non-manufacturing companies worldwide. In Lean, we do “Kaizen” of Continuous Improvements by doing Problem Solving, Visual Management and 5S. Students learn how to look for “waste” and opportunities to improve by using tools such as Value Stream Map (VSM) and Standardized Process (SP). In PTP the Lean for All program kicked off in September 2018. This program is targeted to develop the lean mind-set and bring the continuous improvement culture to PTP. The program comes from APMT Ops Academy and is being deployed to all the HUBS and key terminals worldwide, through the Academy Partner or terminal CI leader. PTP has been chosen to be one of the first terminals to roll out this program by the Ops Academy at the Hague. “The emphasis on basic lean tools and personal development topics are the core to this program”, says Amit Khindriya who is leading the Lean for All Program at PTP. Program has total 6 levels – Level 1 is the basic introduction. Level 2 & 3 is the core of the lean education classes and boot camps. Level 1-3 is the focus for 2018/19 at PTP. It is the aspiration of the Management to have as many students graduate Level 3 (Lean Practitioners) as possible. Students who want to go further can embark on the Level 4 which is more intense and practical in solving actual day to day problems and improvement projects that impacts the business. Level 5 and 6 is planned at the late stage for now as it requires students to be in the program for at least 1 year before going on to level 5. To date, total of 60 students have gone through the program, from 2 groups. Group 1 was trained by APMT trainer while Group 2 was trained by PTP trainer. Both sessions were in English. “Moving forward, to ensure outreach to the frontline staff training sessions will be held in Bahasa Melayu. As such we are in the process of getting the training materials translated”, added Amit.

RTG OPERATOR
REYNER BIN JARIMAN Tell us a little bit about yourself What is your biggest achievement in PTP? My name is Reyner Bin Jariman and I am currently 36 years old. I was born and raised in Tampaluri, Tuaran, Sabah. Today, my family and I live at Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar CIQ Quarters, Gelang Patah.
I had two memorable achievements since I joined PTP for almost 14 years. The first achievement that I received is the 10 Years of Services Award for my years of servicing PTP. The second award is the No Medical Leave Award. This award is rather special to me because at that time, I had not taken any medical leaves and also did not take any Emergency Leave (EL) for the whole year.
Besides those awards, I also did get calls for promotion to QC Operator I am married and blessed with for several times but unfortunate for me, I could not take the promotion two beautiful children, a 4 years because I have Acrophobia which mean that I cannot be in a high place old girl and 2 years old boy. My like QC. wife is a Wildlife and National Parks officer working in Senai Airport What is your motto? Terminal, Senai. I joined PTP in June 2004 after I finished my secondary school in Sabah. I was introduced to PTP by one of my friends who was already working in PTP at that time. It was my friend who told me so much about PTP and encouraged me to apply for a job here. Later on, when I heard there was a job opening in PTP operations, without hesitation I went for the interview and was later hired under Operations Division. What makes you enjoy doing your work?
I always believe that successful people are those who never stop or given up when they are facing failure. To be successful, facing failure is part and parcel of the journey and we certainly need to analyse what went wrong, find the right solutions, correct the mistake and give our best to do better.
Well, for me, I think what I mostly enjoy doing my work is the environment and the benefits that I get for my service. Here, I also have great colleagues around me who I can work comfortably and share our stories together. Besides that, the safety culture here is also continuously improving and thus assures me to do my work. Spending most of my working shift inside the terminal can be very risky as there are a lot of hazards surrounding us. Therefore, with all the safety precautions and initiatives taken to ensure me and my colleagues’ safety, it further motivates me to do my tasks as an RTG operator.
I also believe in positivity. Life is full with hardship and roadblocks. By thinking positively, you can see something much clearer and it will set your mind to look at such roadblocks in different and broader perspective.
What are the things that your colleagues do not know about you?
I hope that management will be able to appreciate its employees, especially the senior staff by looking at our benefits and salary scale. In my opinion, the problem with salary is that most of the senior workers like us earned less or the same as the salary of those of the younger ones. This is most probably because of the salary scale that had been adjusted over the years. Although I fully understand that there must be perfectly good reason behind the adjustment, I just think that with the experience and skills that we have as compared to those who have only serve PTP in a short space of time surely deserve to get higher pay and benefits.
I am not really sure as I never hide any secrets from my friends or live a mysterious double life like a secret agent. I can tell you that I am a happy-go-lucky kind of person. I can make friend easily with people from all backgrounds and I like to tease around with my friends when we hang out during break. As happy person as I am, I am also quiet a cautious person too. I don’t easily make decision unless I am certain of it. That is why, when some of my friends left PTP to find other job that they thought pays better than in PTP, I did not follow their step. To me, even though money is important, you need to also consider other factors such as the benefit that entails, working culture and environment, distance between your house to your work place and most importantly, as a husband and father, I need to make sure that I have enough quality time and be at the right state of mind when I spend my time with my family. I had friends who had resigned from PTP but regretted their decision because they failed to think through of their decision accordingly. Another thing about me is that I am a family guy kind of person. Since married, I like to spend most of my time after work and during my day off with my family. Besides that, I like to participate in a short distance running event such as fun run. Although I am not as active as before, I have participated in several short-distance running event this year. I also like to play football or futsal occasionally with my friends in PTP.
What would u like to see in the future at PTP?
In term of trust, I hope that the Management can put more trust to us, the senior staff with the task given by them. These people have been doing the same job and task for years and they have already familiar with the work itself. By trusting them, we can have a better and smooth working system which in other hand it will definitely benefiting the management and company. The other important thing that I want to stress out is maintenance the machineries in the terminal such as RTG. When the machineries have been running for a long period of time in a day, it can be easily damaged or broken down. The machineries need a proper maintaining and the methods of using some part from other machine into another machine that had damaged or broken down should be avoided or else there will be worst incidents and loss of money to major repair work.

HEAD OF CIVIL DEPARTMENT ENGINEERING & FACILITIES DIVISION
MARIATUL QIBTIYAH Tell us a little bit about yourself My name is Mariatul Qibtiyah Ahmad Khalid and I am currently heading the Civil Department under Engineering and Facilities Division. Most of my friends and colleagues in PTP call me Maria. I was born in Bota but spent most of my childhood years in Teluk Intan, Perak. I am the eldest from 6 siblings in my family. I have 4 brothers who are currently living in Perak and a sister who works outside of Perak as I am. My interest to study and to venture into engineering field began when I was on a school field trip. I saw a guy in a white safety helmet and was looking up on a project. Since that day, I dreamt of building my own building and started to develop my deep interest in engineering studies, especially in civil field. Education wise, I spent my secondary school years in Sekolah Menengah Sains Teluk Intan for my SPM before I went to Matriculation. I took up Physics Science stream in Matriculation and my Civil Engineering Degree in University Putra Malaysia (UPM). After finishing my degree, I went to work with a construction company for few months before moving on to another company for a different project. Upon my project completion, I joined a Project Management Consultancy for a year as a Project Manager. During my work in Project Management Consultancy, I did two major projects that I am rather proud of. The first one was also one of the biggest projects that I had ever managed at that time. I was entrusted to manage a construction of monopole transmission power in Subang Jaya. This project was really challenging as it was the highest monopole ever built in south-east Asia region at that time. The second major project that I did was the pedestrian underpass tunnel and pedestrian sidewalk connecting the Seremban Train Station and Seremban Bus Station in Negeri Sembilan. In 2011, I decided to move on to another challenge in my life which is to further my Doctorate (Phd) study in Construction Management. However, I had to put a brake to my plan as I was offered a chance to serve PTP which to me was also a very exciting project for my personal and professional growth. What do you enjoy most about your work? For me, I hold on to the principle of “Integrity in Work” which is we need to ensure that we never misact on the work itself. Starting from clock in, break hour, tools and equipment, to the leave taken should be handle with integrity. The company trusts us and pays us for the work and we in the other hand should do our work with integrity. I hold on to the principle of “Integrity” dearly in my heart. For me, integrity is an inborn moral conviction to do what is right, and reject that which is wrong, regardless of the consequences that are attached to the decisions. Integrity comes in many forms, but the most important traits that are expected at the workplace are dependability, honesty, loyalty and good judgement. As an individual in the workplace, having integrity means that your actions are consistent with your words, that you are trustworthy, reliable and honest and that you can bravely admit your mistakes and not be afraid to show how much you care. Integrity in the workplace is crucial as these traits foster a positive workplace culture. If you are known for your integrity, you will gain trust and respect from the people around you. Another work enjoyment that I cherish is the challenges that I face every day. Personally, I am not a person who likes to spend my time working behind a desk and keep doing the same kind of job routine day in and day out. I love new challenges and I constantly seek for new ways to improve my surrounding. With challenge, I am able to learn and improve my knowledge and skills. Besides that, these challenges are also an opportunity for me to develop my team members. I trust my team and I empowered them in doing their job. I believe that a supportive environment undoubtedly makes for a better working atmosphere. It helps to create a sense of camaraderie and team spirit, which works as a reminder that everyone is striving towards one unified goal. This is a concept that can get lost over time when people are focusing solely on their own respective workloads. What are the things that your colleagues do not know about you? Most people in PTP might not know that I am a solo traveler. I have been to many places alone such as Rome, Venice, Seoul, Cambodia, Turkey, China, Thailand and few more. Solo travel gives me the ultimate freedom. You wake up and it’s just you — what you want, where you want, when you want. In that freedom and infinite space of possibility, you meet yourself. You hit the limits of what you like and don’t like. There’s no one to pull you in any one direction or override your reasons. Travelling solo can be difficult at first but as time passes, you will learn to manage your schedule and other few important things to be done before, during and after travelling. For an example, before travelling I like to study about the place I am going in such as the season, places, public transportation, route, and many more. During the travelling, I need to ensure that someone will be notified about my whereabouts. Usually, when I travel, I will ensure to notify my situation and condition to one or two of my close friends just so they know that I am safe and sound. After travelling, I also need to ensure that I have enough time to rest my body, mental and readjust to the local climate.

What is your advice to the youngsters or those who want to hone their leadership skill? To all the youngsters, you are at the age of learning and have the ability to absorb every lesson around you. Be humble in learning from people around you. The “I know everything” mentality should be avoided in working environment. I believe that respecting and being humble to people around you regardless of age, level and education background can bring you far. In my team environment for example, I might have shared with my colleagues something about work, but at the same time I also learned on many other things from them too. The learning process is continuous and never stops. Seoul

Earn trust from your colleagues, your seniors, your bosses and your counterparts. When you earned their trust, don’t break it. Trust is very vulnerable aspect of life that is hard to earn but very easy to be taken away from you if you misuse it. What would you like to see in the future at PTP? I hope that there will be more positive environment in PTP and that the people are more adaptable to a new and better culture. It is good for everybody to open for changes especially the one which can bring good thing to ourselves and PTP. If there is a new thing introduced by the Company, do not take it negatively without assessing the matter comprehensively. We should not take rumors seriously to the point that it stops us from giving our best to our respective duty and tasks. Be professional and learn to keep an open mind about changes and assess the changes accordingly. Another aspect that I really hope to see improve in PTP is on the human capital development program. Personally, the new training programs that the Management has initiated these past years are very progressive. However, to ensure that the staffs are highly capable and at world class level, we need to further develop their abilities and capabilities. Our human capital development programs also need full support and cooperation from everybody to ensure success. As such, I really hope that PTP can one day produce world class talents with high level of productivity, accountability and reliability which align with PTP vision to be the preferred port of choice in South-East Asia.
