Values First By Pete Murtha, Founder, Optima Hair, Edgbaston, UK Over the past 25 years, I have dedicated my professional life to the non surgical hair replacement industry. Optima Hair is the largest single hair system company in the UK with 25 staff and over 2,000 clients. During my career I have personally sold more than 35 million dollars worth of hair systems. In addition I am proud of the fact that we have also given away over 2 million dollars worth of hair systems to individuals facing medical hair loss. This industry has never been just about hair, but about restoring confidence, dignity, and identity. Here are my five key insights for anyone in the hair replacement business.

1. Ask Questions and Truly Listen Hair loss is rarely just a cosmetic issue. It is emotional. It can affect relationships, careers, and mental wellbeing. If you treat it purely as a product transaction, you will miss the bigger picture. When clients walk through your door, they are often vulnerable., may feel embarrassed, anxious, or defeated. Your first responsibility is not to sell, it is to listen. Ask open questions: How has hair loss affected you? What are you hoping will change? What worries you most? Genuinely listen. Empathy builds trust, and trust builds long-term relationships. Some of our most loyal clients have been with us for decades because they felt understood from day one. Empathy is not a sales tactic. It is a mindset, and in this industry, it is your most valuable asset.

2. Build on Strong Foundations When you start a business, you must decide what you stand for not what is

fashionable, and not what competitors are doing. What you believe is right. Values attract the right clients and team members and protect your reputation. Reputation is everything. Are you committed to honesty, even if it costs you a sale? Will you prioritize long-term relationships over short-term profit? Will you support clients when they are at their lowest? Our values have guided every decision we have made. Giving away hair systems was not a marketing strategy. It was aligned with who we are. If your values are clear, decisions become easier. If they are weak, you will constantly second-guess yourself.

3. Build the Right Environment and Customer Experience People do not just buy hair systems. They buy an experience. From the moment a client contacts you, every interaction matters, the tone of your voice, the privacy of your consultation rooms, the cleanliness of your space, the professionalism of your presentation. Your environment should feel safe, discreet, and reassuring. Clients must feel comfortable enough to open up. The customer journey should be seamless with a clear consultation, honest expectations, transparent pricing, and ongoing support. Never underestimate the power of consistency. If you deliver excellence every time, referrals will follow naturally. Many of our clients come to us through word of mouth, and that’s the most powerful endorsement of all.

4. Build the Right Team You cannot build a great company alone. Your team will either elevate your vision or dilute it. Hire for attitude and empathy

Building Trust for Long-Term Success first. Skills can be taught; character cannot. Look for people who genuinely care about clients, take pride in their work, want to grow, and share your values. Then, invest in training. Standards must be high and consistent. A client’s experience should not depend on which team member they see. Culture is created by what you tolerate. If standards slip and you ignore it, that becomes the norm. Protect your culture fiercely. It will define your business more than any marketing campaign ever could.

5. Supply Chain and the Courage to Make Mistakes Your supply chain is the backbone of your business. Quality, reliability, and communication with suppliers are critical. If your product fails, your reputation suffers. Choose partners carefully. Build relationships not just transactions. Visit factories if possible. Understand materials, timelines, and quality control processes. Also, accept that mistakes will happen, especially early on. Systems will fail. Orders may go wrong. You will make decisions that, in hindsight, you would change. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. I did not begin with perfect systems, flawless strategy, or all the answers, but with belief, determination, and a deep sense that this business could change lives. I have made countless mistakes along the way. Each one has strengthened our processes and sharpened our standards. Progress is built on correction. With empathy, strong values, the right environment, the right team, and a solid supply chain — and you are not afraid to make mistakes, you can build something extraordinary. Lead with your heart, back it up with discipline, say resilient, and never forget that behind every hair system is a human being who wants to feel like themselves again. THE LINK MAGAZINE

Welcome New Members! Brooke Michie Adorn SWFL Hair Loss Solutions, Naples, FL I am the founder of ADORN SWFL Hair Loss Solutions, a hair boutique that specializes in luxury wigs and toppers for women/ children. I created ADORN to provide a private, supportive space where those experiencing hair loss can find comfortable, natural-looking, options and feel confident again. My own hair loss journey began at sixteen, when I developed alopecia. I was able to manage it for many years, but in my early thirties my hair loss progressed and I began wearing wigs. That experience gave me a deep understanding of what women go through and ultimately inspired me to create ADORN. Today, I work one-on-one with clients to help them find beautiful, natural solutions that restore not just their hair, but their confidence.

Heather Norton Paris Wigs & Extensions, Chandler, AZ Paris Wigs & Extensions is a wig and hairpiece boutique that has been serving women for over 13 years. With more than 20 years in the hair industry, what started as a passion for hairstyling grew into something much deeper: a calling to help women feel confident, beautiful, and like themselves again. I’ve always had an artistic eye when it comes to hair, but my true purpose revealed itself when I began working with women experiencing hair loss. I quickly realized this wasn’t just about hair — it was about identity, confidence, and emotional healing. Every wig, every hairpiece, every consultation is personal to me. I pour my heart and soul into my work because I understand how vulnerable this journey can be. Whether a client is navigating medical hair loss, thinning hair, or simply wanting to enhance their look, my mission is always the same: To help women look good, feel good, and walk away more confident than when they arrived. This business isn’t just what I do — it’s who I am. And I am incredibly grateful to have spent the last 13 years walking alongside so many amazing women on their hair journeys.

Holly Snoke Gayla Wigs, Conroe, TX I am a seasoned entrepreneur, as well as a dedicated wife and mother, with a proven history of launching and growing

businesses. After founding two startups, I expanded my portfolio through the acquisition of Gayla Wigs, a leader in premium hair solutions for both aesthetic enhancement and medical hair loss. My clientcentered philosophy and tailored approach empower individuals at every stage of hair loss—or those seeking a seamless style transformation—to regain confidence and express their individuality.

Leslie Rossi StyleOnsite, Schaumburg, IL I’ve dedicated 25 years to the art and science of hair — cutting, coloring, perming, extending, and transforming not just appearances, but confidence. For 19 of those years, I owned and operated my own salon, where my greatest pride wasn’t just the business itself, but the stylists I trained, mentored, and watched grow into successful professionals. Education has always been my heartbeat, whether in the salon, the classroom, or one-on-one moments that change careers. Over the past 15 years, I’ve taught intermittently in beauty schools, specializing in professional color lines and product education. I thrive in helping students connect theory to real-life application — bridging the gap between the textbook and the salon floor. Even after transitioning to a rental salon model, mentoring and supporting stylists has remained a constant passion and purpose.

Pam Spitali Redeemed and Restored Hair, Rochester, NY I have been a licensed cosmetologist since 1984, bringing over four decades of experience to the beauty industry. In 1999, I discovered non-surgical hair restoration and found my true calling. I am passionate about helping others not only restore their hair, but also renew their hope and confidence. After 26 years of working in the industry, I stepped out in faith to open my own studio, Redeemed and Restored Hair by Pam Spitali LLC. This new chapter allows me to fully dedicate myself to offering the latest non-surgical hair restoration solutions, along with preventative and restorative treatments for my clients’ natural hair. I am excited to become a member of the American Hair Loss Council and looks forward to the continued education, professional support, and sense of community it provides. I am especially grateful for the opportunity to connect with fellow professionals, stay at the forefront of industry advancements, and better

serve my clients through the valuable resources and training AHLC offers.

By Michelle Schumm, Owner, Restore Hair Loss Salon, Minnetonka, MN

required to transform that piece into something wearable, natural-looking, and confidence-restoring still holds significant value. The key is establishing clear service pricing, educating clients, and reinforcing the importance of professional guidance.

The rise of online shopping has transformed nearly every industry, and the hair replacement field is no exception. Today, it is increasingly common for clients to walk into a salon or studio with a wig or hairpiece they purchased online and ask for it to be cut, customized, or styled.

Recognizing the Value of Professional Expertise

For hair loss professionals, this situation can present both a challenge and an opportunity. While we may not have earned revenue from the product itself, the expertise

One of the most important things for professionals to remember and communicate is that the service we provide carries real value.

Most wigs purchased online arrive far from ready to wear. They often require multiple adjustments before they look natural and suit the client. These services may include: • Custom cutting and shaping • Density reduction or thinning • Face-framing adjustments • Lace trimming and hairline refinement • Blending and texturizing • Professional styling and finishing • Custom coloring These services require time, technical CONTINUED ON PAGE 11 THE LINK MAGAZINE

skill, and years of training. As specialists in hair loss solutions, we understand face shape, hair density, cap construction, and the unique needs of individuals experiencing hair loss. That expertise is what allows us to make a piece truly work for the client.

• Cap construction and comfort

Because the product was not purchased through the salon or studio, it is appropriate and necessary to charge accordingly for the professional services required.

• Ongoing maintenance and support

Establishing Clear Service Policies Many successful hair loss studios establish a specific “outside hair service” policy. This allows both the professional and the client to clearly understand the cost associated with customizing products purchased elsewhere. In many cases, these services require more time and technical precision. Pricing should reflect the specialized nature of the work and the professional expertise involved. Having a clear policy also eliminates uncomfortable conversations and reinforces that professional customization is a skilled service.

Turning the Appointment into an Educational Opportunity Clients who purchase wigs online are often motivated by price. However, many are unaware of the differences between mass-produced products sold online and professional quality options available through hair replacement studios. Rather than criticizing the client’s purchase, the goal should always be education. Professionals can help clients understand differences in:

• Density and natural movement • Longevity and durability • Customization options available through a professional Many clients simply have not been exposed to the level of craftsmanship and personalization available through professional hair replacement providers.

Explaining the True Cost of “Less Expensive” Online wigs can appear significantly less expensive at first glance. However, many clients begin to see the difference once they start wearing the piece. Common challenges with lower-cost online products may include: • Excessive shine or unnatural density • Tangling or matting • Shedding or poor durability • Limited ability to customize • Discomfort due to cap construction In contrast, professional studios offer carefully selected products along with expert fitting, customization, and long-term support. Helping clients understand these differences allows them to make more informed decisions moving forward.

Meeting Clients Where They Are It is important to remember that individuals experiencing hair loss are often navigating a deeply emotional journey.

Purchasing a wig online may be their first step toward regaining a sense of normalcy or confidence. When they arrive at a professional studio, they are often seeking reassurance and expertise. By welcoming them, providing exceptional service, and offering thoughtful education, professionals can turn a onetime service appointment into a lasting client relationship.

Turning Today’s Service into Tomorrow’s Client Many clients who initially purchase wigs online eventually transition to professional hair replacement products once they experience the difference in quality, comfort, and customization. A positive experience in your chair may be the moment they realize the value of working with a trained hair loss specialist. By approaching these situations with professionalism, clear pricing, and respectful education, studios can protect their business model while continuing to support individuals on their hair loss journey.

The Bottom Line In today’s digital world, online wig purchases are not going away. But what the internet cannot provide is the trained eye, technical skill, and compassionate care of a professional hair loss specialist. When a client walks through your door with a wig from an online cart, they are not just looking for a haircut; they are looking for someone who knows how to make it feel like their hair. And that level of expertise is something no website can ship in a box. THE LINK MAGAZINE

A Guide to Women’s Wig & Hair Topper Consultations By Patricia Wrixon, Owner, The Salon at 10 Newbury, Boston, MA For many women experiencing hair loss, the idea of wearing a wig or hair topper can feel overwhelming. Concerns about appearance, comfort, and whether the hair will look natural often create anxiety long before they walk through the salon door. That is why the consultation is one of the most important parts of the hair replacement journey. A successful consultation is not simply about selecting a wig or topper - it is about education, empathy, personalization, and trust. Many clients are navigating medical conditions, hormonal changes, stress, or emotional trauma. A thoughtful consultation helps restore confidence and creates the foundation for a long-term client relationship. Here is a guide to creating a professional, supportive, and successful consultation experience for women seeking hair replacement solutions.

Start with Compassion at the Front Desk For many women, making the first attempt to schedule a consultation can be very difficult (and emotional). Having a supportive and empathetic reception team can help set the tone for the entire experience. The first call should help guide & ease the customer into the salon for their initial consultation. The first call should entail a thorough conversation and include: • Asking the customer questions about their hair thinning or hair loss (medical or

non-medical). This will help you determine the client’s mindset and timeline of how soon they will need to be fitted into a solution • Find out if this is their first time wearing a wig or hairpiece or if they have worn before. If they are new to this, they may have a lot of questions. If they have worn before, they might be familiar with the process and may not ask as many questions. • Elaborate on the types of solutions you offer, such as full wigs, hair toppers, extensions, etc. • Referral type – how did they hear about your services? This can help you gauge where your clients are coming from and where you can invest your marketing budget into. By the end of the phone call, you want your client to sound relaxed, relieved and reassured.

Create a Safe, Private Environment Women seeking hair replacement often feel vulnerable & lack self-confidence, especially if their hair loss has been prolonged. You want to offer a welcoming environment. Here are few tips on how to create a safe & private environment: • Offer a private & comfortable space for the consultation • Ask questions so the client can share their concerns • Ensure confidentiality • Avoid rushing, allow enough time – even if you might already know the solution.

Begin with a Thoughtful Conversation This is where you build trust. In a relaxed environment, either sit with the client to chat or stand in front of the client. Ask open ended questions such as: • What part of your hair loss do you find most concerning? • Have you worn toppers or wigs before? • How do you want to feel when you leave here? Would you like to look very much like your present image or have a change? It is also important to discuss lifestyle, maintenance expectations, and budget. A client with an active lifestyle may need something very different from a client seeking a low-maintenance everyday solution. Understanding how long the client has been considering hair replacement can also provide insight into their emotional readiness and decision-making process.

Assess Hair Loss & Scalp Condition A proper evaluation helps guide the product decision making process. During the evaluation, consider: • The type and/or stage of hair loss • Areas of thinning, such as crown, front hairline, or overall • Scalp sensitivity • Existing hair density and texture This information will help determine the level of coverage, density, size, and attachment method needed for the most natural and comfortable result. Explain the Difference Between Wig and Hair Toppers Education is a critical part of the consultation process. Many clients do not fully understand the difference between wigs and toppers. Hair toppers are generally ideal for partial hair loss or thinning in specific areas, while wigs are better suited for advanced or complete hair loss. One effective approach is to present wigs and toppers on mannequin heads before trying them on the client. Explaining cap construction, density, and coverage beforehand allows clients to focus on learning rather than becoming distracted by their reflection in the mirror. Providing education first often helps clients visualize the final result more confidently.

Educate the Client without Overwhelming Many clients don’t know their options – this is your chance to guide, not overwhelm. Topics to review may include: • The differences between human hair, synthetic hair, and blends & why the preference is important. • Cap constructions (lace front, monofilament, silk tops, etc.) • Maintenance routines: Clients can often feel it will be overwhelming caring for their hair replacement. It is important to send them home with care instructions, whether it may be a printed hand-out or step-by-step video instructions on how to wash, style, etc. • Longevity and Pricing: How long will it last? And what is the total cost I should expect? Keep it simple and reassuring. Let them know that ongoing assistance is available if needed.

Color Matching & Style Selection This is where things become creative for stylists. Helpful practices include: • Take pictures of your client’s hair or

hair loss so you can have a reference when working on a solution. For privacy reasons, you can keep face out of the photos or ask for permission. • Decide if you are going to be matching to their current hair or a different desired look • Show several options and have inventory available

Proper Measurements & Fit Accuracy is key for comfort and realism, especially for hair toppers. The amount of coverage needed and the right hair density will factor into the best amount of coverage and fit. Include: • Head measurements, such as circumference, ear to ear, temple to temple, and front to nape. • You want it to be secure, but comfortable • Offer adjustments if needed Explain how a proper fit prevents slipping and discomfort. Clients often feel a larger size is more comfortable, but would not provide the security needed to keep it on.

The Try-On Process Make this a positive & empowering experience for clients. Guide the process gently: • Don’t overwhelm with too many options at once • Give honest but kind feedback. Let the client make the choice, it is important because they are going to wear even if you would recommend something else. • Let them react emotionally – it’s normal. In this case, you can give them some space and ask them if they want privacy • Have them stand up • Use a mirror & good lighting. If you have access to natural lighting (daylight), this is the best way to see the true color of a wig or hairpiece.

Customization & Styling Help the client visualize the final result & have them give their input. If they have inspiration pictures of what they would like, have them share them with you.

Offer services such as: • Cutting, coloring and styling customization • Perming • Styling tips • Personalization to match their image

Provide Care and Maintenance Education Set realistic expectations. Review topics such as: • Washing frequency • Storage • Products to use • Longevity of the piece Provide written or visual instructions if possible on demonstrations for clients to access outside of the salon.

Offer Emotional Support and Follow-Up One of the most overlooked aspects of hair replacement consultations is emotional support. Invite clients back for: • Adjustments • Styling assistance • Maintenance appointments • Ongoing support and education Let the client know this is a process and we are here to support them get to a comfortable place with their wig or hair piece. A hair replacement consultation is about far more than selecting hair. It is about restoring confidence, dignity, and a sense of normalcy. The most successful consultants combine technical expertise with empathy and patience. By creating a safe environment, educating without pressure, and supporting clients emotionally, salons can transform what may feel like a difficult experience into an empowering one. When women feel understood and supported, the consultation becomes more than a service - it becomes the beginning of renewed confidence. THE LINK MAGAZINE

Breaking the Old-School Silence A Modern, Guest-Centered Framework for Treating Hair Loss By Zoya Ghamari, Owner, Zoya Salon, Carrollton, TX The hair loss industry is at a turning point. For decades, it functioned behind a curtain of secrecy, limited options, and outdated solutions. Clients were often told to accept visible systems, unnatural density, or uncomfortable applications because those were considered the only available choices. Today’s clients, however, are more informed, more visually educated, and far less willing to settle for results that look artificial or feel restrictive.

including those experiencing hormonal shifts, stress-related shedding, medical conditions, or disorders such as trichotillomania. Many of these individuals spent years hiding their condition before seeking help. As public conversation becomes more open, they are finally stepping forward — and they expect solutions that reflect modern standards, not outdated ones.

Social media has accelerated this shift. While it has helped normalize conversations around hair loss, it has also exposed clients to dramatic before-and-after transformations that are not always supported by ethical application, clinical understanding, or longterm planning. This new visibility has created both opportunity and responsibility for modern practitioners.

Why Traditional Models Are No Longer Enough Historically, many hair loss solutions followed a single-method philosophy. Clients were frequently advised to shave remaining hair and commit to one standardized system regardless of their lifestyle, scalp condition, or long-term goals. In many cases, the available pieces were limited in color range, density realism, and base design, resulting in outcomes that looked obvious rather than natural. These approaches were not designed for today’s client. Hair loss is now affecting younger individuals more than ever,

The Global Influence Changing Expectations International clinics, particularly in regions like the United Kingdom and Ireland, have begun redefining what comprehensive hair restoration can look like. Some of the most progressive practices combine trichology, cosmetic artistry, and customized systems into one integrated approach. CONTINUED ON PAGE 19 THE LINK MAGAZINE

Rather than replacing hair, they work with existing hair, scalp condition, and lifestyle factors simultaneously. This global perspective is important. It demonstrates that effective hair restoration is not about choosing a single method. It is about designing a strategy. Clients are no longer satisfied with coverage alone; they want results that look natural in daylight, on camera, and in motion. They want what many now call “real-life hair” or even “camera-ready hair.” While these advanced solutions often carry a higher price point, they also provide something far more valuable: confidence that feels authentic and sustainable.

A Modern Professional Framework A structured methodology ensures ethical, predictable results and helps practitioners avoid the most common industry mistakes. One of the most effective frameworks consists of three stages: Analyze: Every client is evaluated individually. Factors such as age, current hair condition, future progression, lifestyle, budget, maintenance commitment, and personal goals are considered before any recommendation is made. The guiding belief is simple: one size does not fit all. Strengthen: Before enhancement, the integrity of the existing hair and scalp must be stabilized. This step protects natural hair and ensures it can safely support any additions. Enhance: Only after assessment and preparation is a solution selected. This may involve a single technique or a combination of methods tailored specifically to the guest. This sequence transforms hair restoration from a cosmetic service into a strategic discipline.

Why Multi-Method Expertise Matters Modern clients require versatility from their practitioners. Relying on one system or one manufacturer limits outcomes and forces them into predetermined solutions. True customization often requires sourcing

multiple options — different bases, densities, shapes, and textures — from various suppliers and then pairing them with the most appropriate attachment method. While this process is time-intensive, it allows for results that are far more natural, comfortable, and adaptable. The foundation of attachment methods may be similar, but refinement often requires testing, adjusting, and collaborating with the client until the ideal solution is achieved.

Hair loss is now affecting younger individuals more than ever, including those experiencing hormonal shifts, stress-related shedding, medical conditions, or disorders such as trichotillomania. Many of these individuals spent years hiding their condition before seeking help. As public conversation becomes more open, they are finally stepping forward — and they expect solutions that reflect modern standards, not outdated ones. In practice, this means offering a wide spectrum of services rather than a single signature system. These may include multiple extension techniques alongside restorative options such as integration systems, customized toppers, mesh or meshless applications, micro-line methods, and personalized scalp solutions. The goal is never to promote one method. The goal is to match the method to the individual.

Case Study: Customization in Action One example involved a client with advanced frontal hair loss and severe thinning through the crown, yet strong density

in the lower sections. Previous solutions required shaving her head and wearing heavy bonded systems that did not suit her active lifestyle. As a medical professional who runs marathons and works outdoors, she needed something lightweight, breathable, and adaptable. By creating a custom mold of her head and designing an integration system tailored to her lifestyle, we developed a solution she could comfortably wear and remove when needed. The transformation was not just aesthetic — it restored her sense of normalcy in daily life. Cases like this illustrate why individualized planning consistently outperforms one-method solutions.

Education and Integrity as Professional Standards Advancing the field requires continuous learning. Ethical practitioners invest in education, research, hands-on testing, and case studies before introducing new techniques to clients. This includes practicing on mannequins, testing methods personally, and gathering real feedback to ensure reliability. Maintaining professional integrity also means respecting the broader industry while striving to elevate standards. Innovation should never come from dismissing others’ work, but from improving what is possible for clients through knowledge and dedication.

The Direction of the Industry Hair restoration is no longer a hidden niche. It is a rapidly evolving specialty that requires adaptability, global awareness, and interdisciplinary knowledge. Practitioners who remain committed to a single method or outdated standards risk being left behind as guest expectations continue to rise. The future belongs to professionals who assess before recommending, customize before applying, educate before promising, and protect before enhancing. Hair restoration is not simply about adding hair. It is about restoring confidence in a way that looks natural, feels comfortable, and respects the individuality of every client. THE LINK MAGAZINE

From Stock Systems to Custom Solutions A Step-by-Step Approach to Women’s Hair Replacement for Salons

By Kate Byrnes, Owner, B Glam Beauty Company and Founder, Crown & Mane Women’s hair loss is far more common than many people realize, and the demand for non-surgical hair replacement solutions continues to grow rapidly. Studies show that nearly 40% of hair loss sufferers are

women, and by age 65, approximately 37% of women experience noticeable hair thinning or hair loss. Beyond the physical changes, hair loss can deeply impact confidence, self-esteem, wellbeing, and more than 50% of women will experience noticeable hair loss at some point in their lives.

For many women, hair loss is an isolating experience. Some begin noticing thinning in their 20s, while others experience hair loss due to hormones, stress, medical conditions, aging, or postpartum changes. Unfortunately, many women do not know where to turn for guidance or feel embarrassed discussing their concerns openly. This growing demand creates both an opportunity and a responsibility for salon professionals. Women are actively searching for trusted experts who can provide education, support, and realistic solutions in a safe and compassionate environment. Salons are uniquely positioned to become that trusted space. The good news is that entering the women’s hair replacement category does not have to feel overwhelming. Many professionals assume they must immediately master fully custom systems before getting started, but the reality is that there is a much more approachable and scalable path into this rapidly growing industry.

Starting with Stock and Pre-Custom Systems For salons looking to introduce women’s hair replacement services, stock and precustom systems provide an ideal starting point. These systems allow professionals to begin offering transformational services without the pressure or complexity of immediately working with fully customized units. Starting with stock systems creates a lower barrier to entry while allowing stylists to build confidence, gain hands-on experience, and better understand client needs. It also gives salons the opportunity to introduce a premium service category without drastically changing their existing business model. CONTINUED ON PAGE 23 THE LINK MAGAZINE

The Importance of the Consultation Process One of the most valuable parts of women’s hair replacement services is the consultation process itself. Many women seeking help for hair loss have spent years trying to hide their thinning or searching unsuccessfully for answers online. An effective consultation allows salon professionals to create a safe and supportive environment where clients feel heard and understood. Education programs like Crown & Mane place strong emphasis on consultation training because trust and communication are essential in this category. Stylists are taught not only how to assess hair loss and recommend solutions, but also how to guide clients through realistic expectations, maintenance routines, customization options, and long-term care plans. For many women, simply finding someone knowledgeable and compassionate enough to discuss their concerns openly can already feel life changing.

The Business Opportunity for Salons Women’s hair replacement is not only transformational for clients — it can also become a strong long-term growth opportunity for salons. Unlike traditional salon services that may vary from appointment to appointment, hair replacement services

naturally create ongoing client relationships through maintenance appointments, reinstallations, color refreshes, cutting, and follow-up visits. This creates more predictable scheduling opportunities, recurring revenue, and stronger client retention. Additionally, offering women’s hair replacement services allows salons to differentiate themselves in a competitive market. Many salons still do not offer these services, creating a unique opportunity for professionals willing to step into this growing niche. Hair replacement services also allow salons to elevate their positioning by offering more advanced and transformational solutions. Instead of being viewed solely as a traditional salon, businesses can begin positioning themselves as specialized providers offering confidence-restoring services that deeply impact clients’ lives. As awareness around women’s hair loss continues to grow, clients are becoming increasingly open to seeking professional help and non-surgical solutions. Salons that invest in education now may have the opportunity to establish themselves as trusted leaders within their communities.

Transitioning into Custom Solutions Once salons become comfortable working with stock and pre-custom systems and have built a strong educational foundation, they can begin transitioning into more advanced custom solutions.

Crown & Mane Education offers structured certification and education specifically designed for salon professionals entering the women’s hair replacement industry. The education focuses on both the technical and consultation side of the business, helping stylists feel more confident before working directly with clients. The certification program includes consultation and course orientation, scalp and hair system preparation, pre-fit and pre-cut techniques, integration methods, installation training, custom coloring, troubleshooting, maintenance education, hair cutting techniques, curl altering processes, and advanced system customization. Students are also guided through real-life salon scenarios such as shampooing systems properly, trial fitting, tape templating, system removal, root color processing, styling techniques, and corrective modifications. This type of education is important because women’s hair replacement is not simply about applying hair. It requires understanding scalp health, customization, placement, blending, maintenance, emotional sensitivity, and client communication. Having a structured educational foundation helps professionals feel more prepared while creating a better overall client experience. Come visit our booth at HairNow26 to learn more.

Custom systems allow professionals to create highly personalized experiences tailored to each client’s lifestyle, hair density, color, scalp needs, curl pattern, and overall goals. This elevated level of customization enhances the final result while also creating a more luxury-level salon experience. By starting with foundational education and gradually expanding into custom work, salons can grow their expertise organically while maintaining confidence throughout the process. This step-by-step approach makes the women’s hair replacement industry far more accessible for professionals who may have once viewed it as intimidating or out of reach.

Empowering Clients Through Confidence and Care At its core, women’s hair replacement is about far more than hair. It is about restoring confidence, helping clients feel like themselves again, and creating safe spaces where women feel seen, supported, and empowered. Many women entering this space have spent years struggling silently with hair loss. Some clients share that they avoided social situations, lost confidence, or felt overwhelmed trying to find reliable information and solutions. Others describe finally feeling hopeful after discovering modern hair replacement options that look natural and allow them to feel comfortable in their everyday lives again. The emotional transformation can be just as powerful as the physical transformation. When women regain confidence in their appearance, it often positively impacts every area of their lives — from relationships and careers to social confidence and self-esteem. For salons willing to invest in education and embrace this growing category, the impact can be life-changing not only for clients, but also for the future growth of the salon itself. As demand for women’s hair replacement solutions continues to rise, there has never been a better time for salons to begin exploring the possibilities. With the right education, support, and step-by-step approach, professionals can confidently enter this space and build services that truly transform lives. THE LINK MAGAZINE

From Both Sides of the Chair Experiencing Hair Loss Deepened My Purpose and Love for the Hair Replacement Industry

THE LINK MAGAZINE

I understand how overwhelming it can feel to make decisions about systems and maintenance while still processing a health crisis. I realized that many clients are seeking comfort, reassurance, and a way to feel like themselves again. By Jennifer Panos, Technical Manager, Profiles by Kristin, Syracuse, NY As hair replacement professionals, we are trained to respond to hair loss with solutions. We assess density, evaluate scalp health, select appropriate bases, and create natural results. We understand the mechanics of restoration. What we do not fully understand until we live it is the emotional weight of watching our own hair change. Medically-induced hair loss is different. It does not ask for permission. It often occurs during an already frightening or physically demanding chapter of life — surgery, illness, recovery, and/or trauma. When I experienced medically-induced hair loss myself, I was no longer standing behind the chair as the professional; I was sitting in it as the client. The moment that stayed with me most was catching my reflection while trying to style my hair. That morning, as I worked with it, I could see and feel the difference — the thinning, lack of fullness, the way it no longer responded the way it once had. As a professional, I understood what was happening. Emotionally, I wasn’t prepared for how vulnerable that moment would feel. It was more than a change in hair. It changed how I saw myself.

There is a unique vulnerability that comes with medical hair loss. Your body is already healing. Your energy may be limited. Your emotions are heightened. When your reflection starts to change too, it can feel like losing a piece of normalcy at a time when life already feels uncertain. Living through that experience changed the way I approach every hair loss client who sits in my chair. I became more aware of how sensitive a healing scalp truly is — not only physically, but emotionally. I understand how overwhelming it can feel to make decisions about systems and maintenance while still processing a health crisis. I realized that many clients are seeking comfort, reassurance, and a way to feel like themselves again. Experiencing medical hair loss personally deepened my understanding of what this work truly represents. It is not simply about density, design, or technical precision. It is about timing. It is about gentleness. It is about meeting someone exactly where they are physically, emotionally, and mentally. I became more intentional in my consultations. I slowed down. I listened more carefully. I paid closer attention to signs of exhaustion, anxiety, and clients feeling overwhelmed. I began to focus not only

on the end result, but on making the entire experience feel safe, manageable, and supportive because during medical recovery, even small decisions can feel heavy. From both sides of the chair, I learned that confidence during this stage does not come from perfection — it comes from relief. It comes from looking in the mirror and seeing something familiar again. It comes from feeling cared for by someone who understands the fragility of the moment. This experience did not change my profession. It changed my purpose. As hair replacement professionals, we are trained to restore hair. But when medical hair loss is involved, we are often helping restore something deeper: a sense of normalcy, dignity, and emotional stability during a time when so much feels out of a person’s control. Walking through my own medicallyinduced hair loss strengthened my respect for the clients who trust us during their own recovery. It reminded me that behind every consultation is a person navigating far more than hair loss. Today, when a medical hair loss client sits in my chair, I am not only responding with knowledge and skill. I am responding with genuine understanding and empathy because when I began my career, I thought I was simply stepping into a job. In reality, it was the beginning of a journey that would transform how I connect with my clients and how I view this industry. THE LINK MAGAZINE

How to Merge Two Hair Replacement Businesses and Retain the Clients Who Built Them By Leah Wingate, Owner, TM Hair, Houston, TX For over 55 years, TM Hair has served its clients under the leadership and legacy of founder Tom Magliaro. TM Hair by Tom Magliaro became a trusted name in hair restoration with a simple but powerful mission: use hair as a vehicle to enhance a person’s quality of life. Someone who experienced hair loss himself, Tom built more than a company — he built a community. Through 28

THE LINK MAGAZINE

the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, he was a staple in Houston, known for his craftsmanship and his compassion. Today, TM Hair is female-owned and operated by Tracey Walsh and Leah Wingate (myself). In 2024, we merged with another long-standing company, Hair Replacement by Eddie Prichard, founded in 1976. For decades, Tom described Eddie as a “colleague, not a competitor.”

After Eddie’s passing in 2000, his wife and daughter continued the business. In 2020, Carrie Delarosa, Eddie’s daughter, took ownership. And in 2024, we made the decision to merge under one unified name: TM Hair.

For 12 months, we changed nothing except the location for Eddie Prichard’s clients. We had absolutely no pricing changes, stylist changes, or factory and product changes. Clients felt no disruption — except a new place to drive. Stability builds security.

Together, we now represent one of the most trusted hair replacement companies in Houston — built with over 95 years of combined experience.

4. Announce the Merger 30 Days Before It Happens

We successfully navigated the merger, and we want to share how we did it — and how we retained the loyal clients who made it all possible.

Why Merging Can Strengthen Your Business When done strategically, merging can: • Expand your market presence • Increase revenue and buying power • Widen product offerings and solutions • Strengthen staff depth and scheduling flexibility • Spark fresh ideas and innovation But success depends entirely on execution.

How to Merge Two Hair Replacement Businesses 1. Find a Credible Company with the Same Culture If you don’t have one in mind, start vetting now. For us, both companies have over 40 years of experience. More importantly, our ethics and culture were completely aligned. We had collaborated over the years (even through Covid), and had developed trust long before paperwork was signed. Both companies treated clients like family and shared a commitment to integrity and 100% client satisfaction.

Timing matters. Hair Replacement by EP announced a location change one month prior to the merger. Simultaneously, TM Hair announced the merger with a simple message: new friendly faces and expanded experience. We didn’t give out too much information. Behind the scenes, we were fully prepared before the announcement. This approach prevented client and staff from overthinkin, limited client anxiety, and reduced the chance of clients “shopping around”. 5. Introduce Staff Before the Merge We introduced our teams one week before the official merger and asked what they needed to make the move easier. We got them pumped up; they were excited because we presented it as exciting! For one year, we operated like two companies under one roof — and it worked beautifully. It was a win-win for everyone – clients, staff, and ownership.

How to Retain the Clients Who Built Your Business Retention requires intention. Here is what works for us: 1. Understand That Clients Needs Change Clients’ circumstances evolve. We adjust programs when: • Budgets shift • Health changes

2. Put Egos Aside

• Location becomes a challenge

Mergers fail when ego leads. Be open to new methods, different product lines, pricing structures and operational improvements. Growth requires flexibility. This step speaks for itself.

• We accommodate hospital visits and difficult life situations when necessary

3. Don’t Change Anything for One Year This was one of our smartest decisions.

Flexibility communicates care — and care builds loyalty. 2. Don’t Chase Dollar Signs The money will follow if you surround yourself with talented professionals, take

care of your staff, and deliver exceptional service. Without our team, we wouldn’t have businesses to merge in the first place. 3. Maintain an Open-Door Policy Tracey, Carrie, and I are accessible to every client and every staff member. Transparency builds loyalty internally and externally. 4. As an Owner, Check on Every Client Annually Once a year — or at renewal — we personally ask about their experience and service and address any scheduling or unit concerns to ensure satisfaction. Whether they’ve been with us 20 years or 20 days, they deserve equal attention. 5. Three-Month Check-Ins for New Clients New clients require extra care. We make one-week follow-up calls, conduct threemonth check-ins, and guide them through the entire onboarding process. New sales sustain the business. We hold their hand every step of the way. 6. Monitor Your Attrition Monthly Retention isn’t guesswork — it’s measurable. Each month we print a report on clients who haven’t been in for service for over 90 days. We call them. Sometimes it’s nothing. Sometimes it’s an opportunity to reconnect. We also track clients who drop off programs or make membership changes. Proactive outreach prevents silent attrition. 7. Invest in Your Front Desk First and last impressions matter. We always greet every client with a smile, warmth and professionalism. Anyone can sell hair systems. Not everyone can deliver unmatched service — and that is where loyalty lives. A merger is not just operational, it is relational. You are inheriting relationships, trust, and legacy. If you’re considering a merger, remember to protect the culture, stabilize the transition, and prioritize people over profit. The rest will follow. THE LINK MAGAZINE

The industry left that door closed. Tabitha Fredrichs built TrichoEdu to open it.

TRICHOLOGY

TrichoEdu is the only ANMA-accredited online trichology certification program in the country and it is designed specifically for licensed hair and beauty professionals who are ready to become the most knowledgeable, most trusted expert in the room.

You became a hair professional because you care about people. You've spent years perfecting your craft, building your clientele, and creating an experience your clients trust. And yet... there's a moment every hair professional knows. A client sits in your chair, visibly distressed, and says the words you dread most, "My hair is falling out. Can you help me?" And you do your best. You recommend products. You refer them out. You search for answers you were never given. It's not your fault. Hair loss and scalp health were never part of your training.

Through TrichoEdu, you don't just learn about hair loss. You learn to assess it, document it, consult on it, and build a service around it that no one else in your market can offer. You graduate as a board-certified trichologist with the clinical knowledge, the intake protocols, and the defined scope of practice to back it up. This isn't continuing education for the sake of a credit. This is the training that changes what you can do for your clients and what your clients will say about you. Tabitha knows what it costs a professional to sit across from a suffering client and not have the answers. She company for all your hair loss clients:
