Dear readers,

eine neue Ära der Produktion hat begonnen. Der lineare Produktionszyklus wird abgelöst durch die Smart Factory – ein Ort, an dem Menschen, Werkeinheiten, Roboter und sogar die herzustellenden Produkte virtuell miteinander kommunizieren.

Dank des Informationsaustausches in Echtzeit gewinnt die Produktion an Effizienz; Ressourcen und Zeit werden gespart. Industrie 4.0 heißt diese vierte industrielle Revolution und Deutschland als führende Industrienation befindet sich im Mittelpunkt der Bewegung.

A new era of production has begun. The linear production cycle is being superseded by the smart factory – a place where people, work units, robots and even the products to be manufactured communicate with one another in a “cyber-physical” system.

Thanks to real-time data exchange, production becomes more efficient and resources and time are saved. This fourth industrial revolution is known as Industry 4.0 and, as a leading industrial nation, Germany is a key player in this trend.

Globaler Hotspot für die vernetzte Industrie war vor zwei Wochen die Hannover Messe. Im April kamen 5.200 Unternehmen, Forschungsinstitution und Hochschulen aus 75 Ländern nach Hannover, um ihre Produkte und Technologien unter dem Schwerpunkt Industrie 4.0 zu präsentieren.

190.000 Besucher – 15.000 mehr als im Vorjahr – sahen sich die Innovationen an fünf Messetagen an.

The global hotspot for networked industry is the Hannover Messe trade fair. In April, 5,200 companies, research institutions and universities from 75 countries came to Hanover to showcase their products and technologies with a focus on Industry 4.0.

190,000 visitors – 15,000 more than last year – took a look at the innovations over the five days of the fair.

Auch hier in den baltischen Staaten gewinnt das Thema an Bedeutung und nicht ohne Grund. Mit einem Anteil der Industrie am BIP von 23 (Litauen), 20 (Estland) und 16 Prozent (Lettland) sind sie nicht weit hinter Deutschland (25 Prozent). Und dass die drei Länder mit ihren IKT-Branchen Vorreiter sind, hat sich mittlerweile weltweit herumgesprochen. Das sind perfekte Voraussetzungen für die Region, um auf der Weltbühne mitzuspielen und den Fortschritt der IKT zu nutzen, um sich im Bereich der Industrie auf die nächsthöhere Ebene zu befördern. Das Potential ist da!

It is no coincidence that the topic is also growing in importance here in the Baltic States. Industry makes up 23, 20 and 16 per cent of GDP in Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia respectively, only slightly behind Germany (25 per cent). And we know only too well that the three countries boast pioneering information & communication technology sectors. These are perfect conditions for the region to be a player on the world stage and exploit its progress in ICT to take its industrial sector to the next level. The potential is there!

Plattformen des Austauschs zu Industrie 4.0 gibt es im nächsten Monat gleich zweimal: Am 19. Mai veranstaltet die Deutsch-Baltische Handelskammer zusammen mit LINPRA die erste DeutschLitauische Industrie 4.0 Konferenz in Vilnius. In Tallinn findet am 2. und 3. Juni die Konferenz „Industry 4.0 in Practice“ statt.

Two platforms for discussing Industry 4.0 are already coming up in the next month: on 19 May, the German-Baltic Chamber of Commerce (AHK) is holding the first German-Lithuanian conference on Industry 4.0 in Vilnius in collaboration with LINPRA, while in Tallinn, the “Industry 4.0 in Practice” conference will take place on 2 and 3 June.

Die Entwicklung von Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien (IKT) wird die treibende Kraft bei den großen Innovationen in Produktion und Service innerhalb der nächsten zehn Jahre sein. Das „Internet der Dinge“ wird verschiedenste Bereiche gleichermaßen beeinflussen, von industrieller Produktion über Beziehungen zu Kunden bis hin zur Berufsbildung. The development of information and communication technologies (ICT) will become the driving force behind the biggest innovations in production and services within the next ten years. The “Internet of Things” will affect many different areas in equal measure, from industrial production and customer relations through to vocational training. We are standing on the brink of the fourth industrial revolution. / Annika Bostelmann

Wie macht der Baubeginn einer Fußgängerbrücke im kanalreichen Amsterdam international Schlagzeilen? Die Brücke wird gedruckt. Innerhalb von zwei Monaten werden 2017 selbständig arbeitende Roboter die Metallkonstruktion aus 1.500 °Cheißem Stahl spritzen. 3D-Druck heißt das Konzept dahinter. Dabei wird ein dreidimensionales Element digital entworfen und von einer Fertigungsmaschine in die Realität gedruckt. Schon heute wird dieses Verfahren in verschiedenen Bereichen auf industrieller Ebene eingesetzt. Airbus setzt beim Bau des Flugzeugs A350 beispielsweise 3D-gedruckte Teile ein und spart für die Teile nicht nur 70 Prozent Zeit, sondern auch 80 Prozent der Kosten im Vergleich zum traditionellen Walzen.

How can the start of construction work on a footbridge in Amsterdam, the city of canals, make international headlines? The bridge will be printed.

In 2017, robots will work independently to print a metal construction out of hot steel at 1,500 °C in less than two months. The concept behind this is called 3D printing and involves a three-dimensional element being digitally designed and printed into being by a production machine. This process is already being used in various areas on an industrial scale. For example, Airbus is using 3D printed components in the construction of the A350 aeroplane, not only saving 70 per cent on time but also 80 per cent of the costs in comparison to traditional manufacturing.

tions- und Kommunikationsbranche (IKT) mit Produktionszyklen der Industrie. Sie steht für eine neue Stufe der Organisation und Steuerung der gesamten Wertschöpfungskette. Dieser Zyklus orientiert sich an den zunehmend individualisierten Kundenwünschen und erstreckt sich von der Idee, dem Auftrag über die Entwicklung und Fertigung, die Auslieferung eines Produkts an den Endkunden bis hin zum Recycling, einschließlich der damit verbundenen Dienstleistungen. Basis ist die Verfügbarkeit aller relevanten Informationen in Echtzeit durch Vernetzung aller an der Wertschöpfung beteiligten Instanzen sowie die Fähigkeit aus den Daten den zu jedem Zeitpunkt optimalen Wertschöpfungsfluss abzuleiten. Diese Vernetzung wird auch „Internet der Dinge“ genannt. Die Brückenbauroboter kommunizieren beispielweise untereinander und mit Mensch und Computer über Design, Fertigungsfortschritt und Materialverbrauch. Die Vorteile liegen auf der Hand: Effizienz wird gesteigert, Kosten gesenkt und Res-

communication sector (ICT) with production cycles from industry. It represents a new phase in the organisation and management of the whole valueadded chain. This cycle is geared towards customers’ increasingly individualised requirements, covering the original concept, the contract for development and production and the delivery of a product to the end customer right through to recycling, including the associated services. To make this work, all of the relevant information is made available in real time by networking all of the components involved, while the optimal flow of value creation can be derived from the data at any time. This network is also known as the “Internet of Things”. For instance, the bridgebuilding robots communicate with each other and with people and computers about the design, production progress and material usage. The advantages are obvious: it increases efficiency, reduces costs and saves resources, as well as allowing a high degree of flexibility, enabling businesses to react to external influences at all times.

FOKUSTHEMA | SPECIAL FOCUS If a supplier is late with a delivery, for example, production can be adjusted to accommodate the new supply volume with just one click. The same applies to customer requirements. All it takes is one entry in the system and the customer’s requirement is implemented on the production line.

Connecting ICT with production gives rise to endless new possibilities and business ideas, yet it also poses many challenges. Production lines involving people and machines with identical individual steps leading to a single serial product have been common until now but will become obsolete – as early as 2025, according to the German federal government. This calls for new software, structures, concepts and expertise. What does the workforce of the future look like? How can a virtually networked smart factory be protected effectively against cyber attacks? Which legal obstacles need to be altered? What impact will the revolution have on society? The very essence of the production industry is being put to the test.

Verspätet sich ein Zulieferer beispielsweise, kann die Produktion auf die neue Liefermenge per Klick angepasst werden. Das gleiche gilt für Kundenwünsche. Eine Eingabe ins System und der Kundenwunsch wird in der Produktionsanlage umgesetzt.

Die Verbindung von IKT und Produktion bringt unendliche viele neue Möglichkeiten und Geschäftsideen mit sich, doch es entstehen auch viele Herausforderungen. Die bisher gängige Produktionslinie aus Menschen und Maschinen, bei der einzelne, immer gleiche Arbeitsschritte zu einem einzigen Serienprodukt geführt haben, wird obsolet – laut Bundesregierung schon in 2025. Neue Software, Strukturen, Konzepte, Know-How müssen her. Wie sieht die Arbeitskraft der Zukunft aus? Wie kann eine virtuell verknüpfte Smart Factory vor Cyberangriffen effektiv geschützt werden? Welche rechtlichen Hürden müssen geändert werden?

Wie wirkt sich die Revolution auf die Gesellschaft aus? Die Essenz des produzierenden Gewerbes steht auf dem Prüfstand.

Industrienation Deutschland Der Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie (BDI) ist sich sicher: Deutschland hat ein großes Potential, zum Weltführer der Industrie 4.0 zu werden: Das Produzierende Gewerbe (ohne Bau) nimmt nicht nur über ein Viertel der deutschen Wirtschaftsleistung ein (Stand 2015), soviel wie kaum eine postindustrielle Nation. Auch ist Deutschland Exportland #3, hinter China und den USA, dabei leben dort „nur“ 82 Millionen Menschen. Mit der richtigen Umsetzung rechnet der BDI damit, dass ein landesweiter Einsatz von Industrie 4.0-Technologien ein Wachstum der deutschen Wirtschaft um

The Federation of German Industries (BDI) is certain: Germany has huge potential to become the world leader of Industry 4.0. The production industry (excluding construction) not only takes up a quarter of German economic output (as of 2015), more than any other post-industrial nation. It also has the third largest volume of exports, behind China and the USA, and that with a population of “only” 82 million.

The BDI believes that, if applied correctly, a nationwide implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies could generate further growth in the German economy of 1.7 per cent per year. Digital transformation would open up additional value-added potential of EUR 89 billion a year to German industry.

The grand coalition also recognises this potential, naming the fourth industrial revolution as one of its economic priorities in September 2013. A few months earlier in April 2013, bitkom, Germany’s digital association (Bundesverband Informationswirtschaft, Telekommunikation und neue Medien), together with the German Engineering Federation (VDMA, Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau) and the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (ZVEI, Zentralverband Elektrotechnik- und Elektronikindustrie e. V.) brought the Industry 4.0 platform to life. The platform promotes dialogue between various stakeholders from the business world, politics and civil society on the topic of the digitisation of industry, suggesting recommended actions ranging from company-level to political level, a unified research agenda and a collection of applications. In doing so, the goal of the platform is to transform Germany into a leading supplier of cyber-physical production systems by 2020. The platform is being led by Sigmar Gabriel, the Minister for Economic Affairs, and Prof.

Das Potential sieht auch die große Koalition und hat im September 2013 die vierte industrielle Revolution zu einer ihrer Wirtschaftsprioritäten ernannt. Ein paar Monate zuvor, im April 2013, hatte der Bundesverband Informationswirtschaft, Telekommunikation und neue Medien (bitkom) zusammen mit dem Verband Deutscher Maschinenund Anlagenbau (VDMA), und dem Zentralverband Elektrotechnik- und Elektronikindustrie e. V. (ZVEI) die Plattform Industrie 4.0 ins Leben gerufen. Die Plattform dient dem Austausch der verschiedenen Akteure aus Wirtschaft, Politik und Zivilgesellschaft rund um das Thema Digitalisierung der Industrie. Aus dem Dialog entstehen Handlungsempfehlungen von Unternehmens- bis zur politischen Ebene, eine einheitliche Forschungsagenda und eine Sammlung von Anwendungsbeispielen. Das Ziel der Plattform ist, bis 2020 aus Deutschland einen führenden Zulieferer von cyber-physischen Produktionssystemen zu machen.

Die Leitung der Plattform haben Bundeswirtschaftsminister Sigmar Gabriel und Bundesforschungsministerin Prof. Dr. Johanna Wanka inne.

Parallel dazu sprießen Forschungsprojekte und Anwendungsbeispiele in ganz Deutschland aus den Böden. Die Plattform Industrie 4.0 zählt bereits 238 solcher Beispiele. Die Fraunhofer-Institute haben das Leitprojekt„E³-Produktion“ ins Leben gerufen. Unter dem Leitsatz „Effizient – Emissionsneutral – Einbindung des Menschen“ entsteht eine Forschungsfabrik, deren Erkenntnisse die Industrie „von maximalem Gewinn aus minimalem Kapitaleinsatz zu maximaler Wertschöpfung bei minimalem Ressourceneinsatz“ leiten soll.

Alongside this, research projects and examples of applications are sprouting up all over Germany. The platform Industry 4.0 has already seen 238 such examples. The Fraunhofer institutes have started up the lead project “E³ production”. Working under the guiding principle “Efficient – emission neutral – involving people”, the project has set up a research centre whose findings are intended to guide the industry “from maximum profit for minimum investment to maximum value creation for minimum use of resources”.

The world comes to the Hannover Messe The automation of industry was the dominant theme at the Hannover Messe trade fair in late April 2016. This year, the world’s most important industry fair once again showcased the latest applied technologies and production concepts. The start-up KBee from Munich has brought a flexible industry robot onto the market in the form of Franka Emika, which can be assembled in no time at all. The robot can be operated without any training and can work hand in hand with people, as built-in sensors prevent it from colliding with them.

By contrast, the Bosch Group’s projects are on a somewhat larger scale: Bosch Rexroth presented the new production information system Active Cockpit at the fair, which is intended to ensure higher productivity by providing better information. The interactive, web-based communication platform

Die wichtigste Industriemesse der Welt war auch in diesem Jahr Schauplatz der neuesten Anwendungstechnologien und Produktionskonzepte. Noch nie wurden so viele konkrete Anwendungsbeispiele für die Digitalisierung der Produktion auf einer Messe präsentiert: von der Einzellösung an einer bestehenden Maschine bis hin zur Vernetzung der gesamten Produktion inklusive Datensammlung und Auswertung in der Cloud. The Hannover Messe has made it unmistakeably clear: industry is experiencing a period of transition.

Never have so many concrete applications for digitising production been presented at a trade fair: from a stand-alone solution in an existing machine through to networking the entire production, including data collection and analysis in the Cloud.

And the pool of ideas has not yet been exhausted by any means. The question in all of this is, who will come out of this transition on top and who will be left behind?

Die digitale Zukunft ist längst ein Schlagwort geworden, mit dem sich viele Unternehmen gerne schmücken, das aber die wenigsten wirklich durchschauen. Umso wichtiger ist es, das Verständnis rechtzeitig zu verbessern und die Weichen zu stellen, die auch morgen noch eine erfolgreiche und wettbewerbsfähige Fertigung und Lieferung sicherstellen.

“Digital future” is a well-established buzzword that has been enthusiastically adopted by many companies – but precious few think about what it really means. This makes it all the more important to gain a clearer understanding and to set the wheels in motion now to ensure that successful and competitive manufacturing and supply will still be possible in future.

Die erste Deutsch-Litauische Konferenz „Industrie 4.0“ am Mittwoch, 19. Mai 2016, in Vilnius bringt Experten und Unternehmer aus Deutschland und den baltischen Staaten zusammen. Sie diskutieren über aktuelle Entwicklungen, Chancen und Risiken des Internet of Things. „Die digitale Revolution betrifft auch kleine und mittelgroße Unternehmen weit mehr, als sie oft ahnen“, sagt Lars Gutheil, Stellvertretender Geschäftsführer der AHK: „Wer sich nicht auf die Herausforderungen einlässt, die Industrie 4.0 mit sich bringt, droht schon bald den Anschluss zu verpassen.“ Umgekehrt könnten Unternehmen, die jetzt auf Industrie 4.0 umstellen, ihr Portfolio radikal verbessern und langfristig Kosten sparen.

The first German-Lithuanian conference on “Industry 4.0” is set to take place in Vilnius on Wednesday 19 May 2016 and will bring together experts and entrepreneurs from Germany and the Baltic States to discuss the latest developments in the Internet of Things and the risks and opportunities it presents. “Even small and medium-sized companies are often far more greatly affected by the digital revolution than they would think,” says Lars Gutheil, Deputy CEO of the German-Baltic Chamber of Commerce (AHK).

“Companies that are not willing to take on the challenges posed by Industry 4.0 risk being left behind.”

Conversely, companies that embrace Industry 4.0 now have the chance to make radical improvements to their portfolio and save costs in the long term.

Zwei Workshops runden das Programm ab, darunter das von Phoenix Contact angebotene Thema “Big Data/ Data Security”.

Andere Länder wie die Niederlande und Tschechien hätten bereits eigene Programme entwickelt und ihre Agenda mit Deutschland abgestimmt. Gutheil: „Auch Litauen täte gut daran, sich auf höchster Ebene intensiv mit dem Thema zu beschäftigen.“ Soeben besuchte Wirtschaftsminister Evaldas Gustas mehrere Unternehmen in Süddeutschland, um sich zu Industrie 4.0 zu informieren.„Dies ist ein positives Signal, auf dem wir mit unserer Konferenz gemeinsam weiter aufbauen wollen.“

“The main aim of the conference is to spread knowledge and to allow German and Lithuanian partners to forge the vital initial contacts they need to tackle Industry 4.0 together in future,” says Gutheil, adding that other countries such as the Netherlands and the Czech Republic have already developed their own programmes and coordinated their agenda with Germany. “It is in Lithuania’s interests, too, to make this topic a real priority at the highest level,” he says. Minister of Economy Evaldas Gustas has recently returned from a trip to southern Germany, where he visited several companies in order to find out more about Industry 4.0. “This is a positive step, and one that we hope to build on together at our conference.”

Professor Detlef Zühlke ist Leiter des Bereiches Innovative Fabriksysteme am Deutschen Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz (DFKI), Gründer des SmartFactoryKL Forschungszentrums und geistiger Urheber des Konzepts Industrie 4.0.

Professor Detlef Zühlke is the head of the Innovative Factory Systems department at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, founder of the SmartFactoryKL research center, and spiritual father of the Industry 4.0 concept.

Wie lange wird es dauern, bis die Industrie 4.0 weitgehend etabliert ist?

Die Idee ist revolutionär, doch die Umsetzung wird evolutionär voranschreiten. In den nächsten 2-3 Jahren werden die ersten Industrie 4.0-Maschinen erscheinen, aber es werden Prototypen sein. Wir hatten Anfragen von Autoherstellern, welche die neuen Technologien aufgreifen wollen – nicht für ganze Fertigungslinien, sondern vorerst nur für den Einsatz im kleinen Maßstab, um Erfahrung zu sammeln. Den Prozess vorantreiben werden hauptsächlich große Unternehmen, weil sie es sich leisten können. Für KMUs wird der Anschluss hingegen länger dauern. In 4 oder 5 Jahren sollten wir eine merkbare Wende hin zu einer umfangreicheren, einfacheren Anpassung von Massenprodukten beobachten können. Eine weiter fassende Anwendung stelle ich mir in 10-15 Jahren vor.

How long will it take for Industry 4.0 to become widely established?

The idea is revolutionary but the implementation will be evolutionary, of course. In the next two to three years, the first Industry 4.0 machines will emerge, but they will be prototypes. We’ve had inquiries from carmakers wanting to embrace the technology – though not by converting entire production lines, rather by starting on a small scale to gain experience.

Big companies will largely drive the process, as they can afford it. Whereas it will take longer for SMEs to follow suit. In four or five years, we should see a noticeable shift towards greater and easier customization of massproduced goods. I envisage wider application of Industry 4.0 in ten to fifteen years.

the ideas that gave rise to the buzzword Industry 4.0 in 2011. Most of the innovations being shown at the Hannover Messe will come from Germany. We have a technological lead of about three years, but that will disappear quickly if we don’t keep up the pace.

Vor welchen Hürden stehen wir noch?

Es muss ein gemeinsamer internationaler Standard für die Kommunikation von Maschine zu Maschine [M2M] gefunden werden. Bei neuen Technologien ist es üblich, dass zuerst rivalisierende Standards existieren und sich dann einer davon durchsetzt. Es könnte durchaus sein, dass die Amerikaner am Ende diesen Standard etablieren, da sie schneller handeln können. Sie haben einige wenige große Akteure wie Intel, AT&T, General Electric, IBM und Cisco involviert. Deutschland mit seinem Mittelstand wird wohl länger brauchen, um sich auf einen universalen Standard zu einigen, schon allein, weil hier mehr Leute am Tisch sitzen.

What hurdles still need to be overcome?

A common international standard must be found for machine-to-machine [M2M] communication. Usually with new technologies, you get competing standards initially and then one manages to establish itself. It may well be that the Americans end up setting that standard because they can move faster.

They have a few large players such as Intel, AT&T, General Electric, IBM, and Cisco involved, whereas Germany, with its large Mittelstand, is likely to take longer to agree on unified standards, simply because there are more people at the table.

Gibt es noch weitere Hindernisse?

Sicherheit ist das zweite große Thema. Industrie 4.0 wird nur funktionieren, wenn überzeugende, zufriedenstellende und sichere Lösungen gefunden werden. Das System muss vor privaten und staatlich finanzierten Cyber-Hackern geschützt werden. In Zukunft wird ein Staat keine Panzer mehr schicken müssen, wenn er stattdessen die gesamte industrielle Produktion eines anderen Landes ausschalten kann. Die Lösungen dürfen nicht nur auf technischer, sondern müssen auch auf politischer und rechtlicher Ebene gefunden werden.

Are there any other hurdles?

Security is the second-biggest issue. Industry 4.0 will work only if convincing, satisfactory, and secure solutions can be found. The system has to be shielded from cyber hackers – both private and statesponsored. In the future, a state won’t need to send tanks if it’s capable of shutting down the entire industrial production of another country. The solutions can’t just be technical; they’ll also have to be political and legal.

Sind Sie zuversichtlich, dass Deutschland seinen Vorsprung behält?

Ich denke ja, solange wir die Geschwindigkeit der Entwicklungen, die wir in Projekten wie SmartFactory hervorgebracht haben, aufrechterhalten.

Langfristig ist es unwichtig, wessen Standardsprache für die M2M-Kommunikation international etabliert ist – wichtig ist, wie die neue Technologie angewendet wird. Hier liegt Deutschlands Vorteil, denn wir sind die Produktionsspezialisten und uns stehen erhebliche staatliche Forschungsfördermittel zur Verfügung.

Are you confident that Germany will keep its lead?

I think we will, if we manage to maintain the speed of development we’ve achieved in projects like SmartFactory. In the long run, it won’t matter whose standard language for M2M communications is adopted internationally. The key will be how the technology is applied, and Germany is better placed because we’re the production specialists and because substantial government research funding is being made available.

Wird es in Zukunft Geisterfabriken geben, in denen nur noch wenige Ingenieure arbeiten?

Ich denke nicht, dass es einen umfassenden Rückgang der Beschäftigten geben wird. Menschen werden als Problemlöser unabdingbar bleiben, denn diese neue komplexe Welt wird neue Arten von Herausforderungen bringen, die nur durch menschliches Denken und Flexibilität gemeistert werden können. Jedoch wird es eine Verlagerung zugunsten hochqualifizierter Jobs mit Erfahrung in der Mechatronik geben. Die Menschen werden ein ganzes Netzwerk an integrierten Maschinen führen und warten müssen.

In the future, will there be ghost factories staffed by just a few engineers?

I don’t think there will be an overall decline in the workforce. Humans will remain essential as problem-solvers because this complex new world will bring new types of challenges that can only be mastered with human thought and flexibility. But there will be a shift toward more highly skilled jobs with expertise in mechatronics. People will need to be able to manage and maintain an entire network of integrated machines.

Trends in Industrie 4.0 | Modern applications of Industry 4.0 3D-Druck | 3D printing Beim 3D-Druck werden dreidimensionale Werkstücke computerbasiert schichtweise aus festen oder flüssigen Werkstoffen hergestellt. Bisher werden 3D-Drucker vor allem in der Luft- und Raumfahrt und der Automobilbranche eingesetzt, um Bauteile mit geringem Gewicht und hoher Festigkeit herzustellen. Die Einsatzmöglichkeiten sind aber nahezu unbegrenzt. So hat etwa die University of Southern California ein Verfahren entwickelt, mit dem ganze Häuser mit Hilfe eines 3D-Druckers innerhalb von nur einem Tag errichtet werden können. Das israelische Startup White Innovation hat ein Produkt namens „Genie“ entwickelt, das mithilfe der Technologie des 3D-Drucks selbst kreierte Mahlzeiten innerhalb von weniger als einer Minute zubereiten kann.

In 3D printing, three dimensional parts are produced by a computer out of layers of solid or liquid materials. Until now, 3D printers have primarily been used in the aerospace and automotive industries to produce lightweight and very strong components, yet their potential uses are virtually unlimited. The University of Southern California, for instance, has developed a process that can construct an entire house in just one day using a 3D printer. The Israeli start-up White Innovation has developed a product called “Genie” that can create personalised meals in less than a minute with the help of 3D printing technology.

Augmented reality smart Glasses | Augmented reality smart glasses

Behind augmented reality smart glasses lie computer-based devices that can be worn just like normal glasses but that add more information to the wearer’s field of vision. For instance, physical information recorded by the camera, microphone or GPS is supplemented by virtual information from the internet or from the device’s internal memory and displayed right before the user’s eyes in real time.

The glasses can be used, for example, to show mechanics a breakdown of steps for performing a particularly complex repair with the help of 3D animations projected onto the lenses.

Big Data refers to analysing and evaluating volumes of data that cannot be evaluated using manual or classic methods of data processing due to their size, complexity or variability. By analysing large volumes of data of all kinds, these methods can be used to discover as yet unknown correlations. These discoveries can in turn help to identify potential for improving processes in all areas of a company’s operations, in particular in the areas of technological development and IT as well as in marketing.

Empfehlungsdienste | Recommender systems Ein Empfehlungsdienst ist ein Softwaresystem, das Vorhersagen darüber treffen kann, wie groß das Interesse des Nutzers an einem bestimmten Objekt ist. Dabei werden die Methoden des Schnellen Lernens und des Information Retrievals angewandt. Der Dienst reduziert anhand der Ergebnisse für den Nutzer alle Objekte einer Produktgruppe auf eine überschaubare Zahl, die den Parametern entspricht. Die Software kann aber nicht nur zur Unterstützung der Vertriebsprozesse eingesetzt werden, sondern auch im Rahmen der technischen Problemlösung genutzt werden, indem Techniker etwa Lösungsvorschläge erhalten, die sich in der Vergangenheit bei vergleichbaren Problemstellungen bewährt haben.

A recommender system is a software system that can predict how great an interest a user will take in a certain item, applying the methods of fast learning and information retrieval. Based on results for the user, the system condenses all the items in a group of products into a manageable number that meets the specified parameters. In addition to supporting the sales process, the software can also be used in technical problem solving, for example when technicians receive recommended solutions that have proved successful in similar situations in the past.

Speech recognition applications are already helping save huge amounts of time in inputting texts or portions of text that do not require any particular formatting or contain any special symbols, offering enormous potential for rationalisation. Using these apps, technicians can populate information systems with all the details required to process orders. Another option is to combine speech recognition with translation, enabling workers from various different countries to communicate in their respective mother tongues.

„Hier wird an Litauens Zukunft gearbeitet“, sagte Bayerns Staatssekretär für Wirtschaft und Medien, Energie und Technologie, Franz Josef Pschierer, über das Joint Life Sciences Center Jungtinis gyvybės mokslų centras der Universität Vilnius. Im März 2016 eröffnete das Forschungszentrum eine Abteilung zur Krebsforschung und -diagnostik.

Dort wird ein innovativer Krebsdiagnosetest entwickelt, der die Sterberate um 50 Prozent senken könnte. Das Zentrum ist eines der modernsten im Ostseeraum und war ein Programmpunkt einer Geschäftsreise unter Leitung des Bayerischen Staatsministeriums für Wirtschaft und Medien, Energie und Technologie. In March 2016, the research centre opened a cancer research and diagnostics department, where an innovative test for diagnosing cancer which could reduce the death rate by 50 per cent is currently being developed. The centre is one of the most modern of its kind in the Baltic region and was one of the stops on a business trip led by the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs and Media, Energy and Technology.

Auf dem anschließenden Bayerischen Abendempfang in der Residenz der Deutschen Botschafterin in Vilnius lobte der Wirtschaftsstaatssekretär die guten bayerisch-litauischen Handelsbeziehungen:„Litauen ist ein hochinteressanter Markt für bayerische Unternehmen. Das litauisch-bayerische Handelsvolumen ist gerade dabei, die Spitzenwerte von vor der Krise wieder einzuholen. Letztes Jahr habe der Handel zwischen Litauen und Bayern ein Volumen von mehr als 440 Mio. Euro erreicht. Für 2016 lasse sich eine Fortsetzung dieses positiven Trends erkennen.“

After the visit to the centre, at the Bavarian evening reception at the residence of the German Ambassador in Vilnius, the State Secretary praised the good trade relations between Bavaria and Lithuania: “Lithuania is an extremely attractive market for Bavarian companies. The volume of trade between Lithuania and Bavaria is in the process of catching up with the peak levels achieved before the crisis. Last year, trade between Lithuania and Bavaria reached a volume of over 440 million euros and there are signs that this positive trend is continuing in 2016.”

Die Wirtschaftsdelegation machte sich bereits vor dem Besuch Litauens einen Eindruck von Unternehmen und Wirtschaftsinstitutionen in Estland und Lettland. „Bayerische Unternehmen haben eine starke internationale Ausrichtung. Gerade für den bayerischen Mittelstand ergeben sich großartige Chancen hier im Baltikum“, so Pschierer. Kooperationsgespräche in Vilnius, Tallinn und Riga standen ebenso auf dem Programm.

There are excellent opportunities here in the Baltic region, particularly for small and medium-sized companies in Bavaria,” said Pschierer. Partnership discussions in Vilnius, Tallinn and Riga were also on the agenda.

Unter den Delegationsteilnehmern waren 14 bayerische Unternehmen aus Bauwirtschaft und Gesundheitswirtschaft, Maschinenbau, Elektrotechnik, Energietechnik, Umwelttechnologie und der Holzbranche. Diese trafen in Einzelgesprächen auf ausgewählte estnische, lettische und litauische Unternehmen, um Kontakte zu möglichen Geschäftspartnern zu schließen.„Besonders haben mir die individuellen Geschäftsgespräche gefallen“, so Richard März, Geschäftsführer der Stahlbau März GmbH: „Mein Ziel war, Länder und Leute kennenzulernen. Darüber hinaus nehme ich Kontakte baltischer Unternehmer mit nach Hause, mit denen ich auf Anhieb Gemeinsamkeiten für künftige Geschäftskooperationen finden konnte.“

Delegation participants included 14 Bavarian companies from the construction, healthcare, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, energy technology, environmental technology and wood sectors. They met one-to-one with selected Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian companies to make contact with potential business partners. “I particularly enjoyed the individual business discussions,” said Richard März, CEO of Stahlbau März GmbH: “My objective was to get to know the countries and people. As a bonus, I am taking home the contact details of the Baltic entrepreneurs with whom I could find common ground for future business partnerships right from the start.”

Zwei Drittel aller Esten, Letten und Litauer leben in Städten. In Deutschland sind es sogar Drei Viertel.

Die Verstädterung verlangt nach innovativen Antworten auf Fragen der Ressourcennutzung, Mobilität, Arbeits- und Wohnumgebung sowie der öffentlichen Sicherheit. Auch Nachhaltigkeit spielt in der Stadtentwicklung eine immer wichtigere Rolle. Kommunen müssen innovative Strukturen entwickeln und unterhalten, die die Bedürfnisse der Menschen decken, CO2-Emissionen sparen und wirtschaftlich tragbar sind. Beispiele, wie die Stadt von morgen gebaut werden kann, haben sich 15 baltische Stadtplanungsexperten vom 25. bis 29. April in Bayern angeschaut. Organisiert wurde die Reise von der Deutsch-Baltischen Handelskammer (AHK) und der TUM Tech GmbH. Die bayerische Exportförderung Bayern International förderte die Delegation im Rahmen des Programms „Bayern – Fit for Partnership“.

Two thirds of all Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians live in cities, while as many as three quarters of all Germans are in the same situation. Urbanisation requires innovative solutions to the issues of using resources, mobility, working and living environments and public safety. Sustainability is also playing an increasingly important role in urban development. Municipalities must develop and maintain innovative structures which meet people’s needs, reduce CO2 emissions and are economically viable.

From 25 to 29 April, 15 Baltic urban planning experts viewed examples in Bavaria of how tomorrow’s cities could be built. The trip was organised by the GermanBaltic Chamber of Commerce (AHK) and TUM Tech GmbH. Bayern International, which promotes export in Bavaria, funded the delegation as part of the “Bayern – Fit for Partnership” programme.

Fünf Tage lang informierte sich die Delegation von Stadtplanern, Bürgermeistern und Unternehmern aus Estland, Lettland und Litauen im Großraum München über Vorzeigeprojekte im den Bereichen Transport, energieeffizienter Bau, Abwasserwesen und Straßenbeleuchtung.„Wie Deutschland arbeiten auch die baltischen Staaten intensiv an innovativen urbanen Konzepten“, sagt Gatis Pāvils, Planungsexperte bei der lettischen Firma NK konsultāciju birojs, SIA: „Deswegen kam uns Vieles auf der Reise durchaus bekannt vor. In Deutschland ist der Prozess aber schon viel weiter. Wir in den baltischen Staaten hinken dem Westen etwas hinterher. Ich konnte von der Reise daher viele neue Impulse mitnehmen, wie Stadtplanung bei uns umgesetzt werden könnte und welche Rolle Unternehmen dabei spielen können.“ So hat die Bayerische Bauwirtschaft das Oskar von Miller Forum ins Leben gerufen, eine Bildungsinitiative für die Ausbildung der Ingenieure im Bau-

But Germany is much further along in the process; we in the Baltic States are lagging a bit behind the West. I was therefore able to take home plenty of new ideas from the trip about how urban planning could be implemented in our countries and what role companies could play.”

Werk3 München demonstrates how old factory sites can be transformed into new residential areas.

Unter den Programmpunkten stand der Besuch bei Siemens. Der Weltkonzern arbeitet an Komplettlösungen für die intelligente Stadt, wie dem Smart Grid, die kommunikative Vernetzung und Steuerung von Elementen der Energieversorgung. „Siemens hat mich fasziniert“, so Angelika Kallakmaa-Kapsta aus der Stadtverwaltung Tallinn: „Hier wird an Konzepten gearbeitet, die auf der ganzen Welt eingesetzt werden können. Die Technologien, die wir dort gesehen haben, sind wahrhaftig zukunftsweisend.“

Das war für mich besonders wertvoll.“

“You begin by taking stock of the situation”

Herr Schröder, seit März 2016 sind Sie der Geschäftsführende Vorstand der DeutschBaltischen Handelskammer. Davor waren Sie 13 Jahre in Aserbaidschan. Gab es für Sie schon den ersten Kulturschock?

Mr Schröder: you have been the Chief Executive Officer of the German-Baltic Chamber of Commerce (AHK) since March 2016. Before that, you spent 13 years in Azerbaijan. Was it a culture shock for you at first?

Nein, einen Kulturschock hatte ich nicht. Ich möchte meine Ankunft in den baltischen Staaten eher mit einer Fluglandung vergleichen. Es gab natürlich die ein oder andere Turbulenz. Im Großen und Ganzen war die Landung aber sehr sanft. Es kommt mir auch Vieles bekannt vor. Es gibt zwar ganz klar kulturelle Unterschiede, aber keine, die zu einem Schock geführt haben. Was mich am Anfang überrascht hat, ist dass sich alle sehr schnell duzen. Das war ich so nicht gewohnt. Und das Schockierende war wenn überhaupt das Wetter. Ich kam in Tallinn Anfang März im baltischen Rest-Winter an. In Baku ist das Klima wärmer und trockener. Jetzt aber sprießen hier schon die ersten Blüten und der Frühling ist da.

No, I didn’t experience a culture shock. I’d say that my arrival in the Baltic States was more like an aeroplane landing: there was a bit of turbulence, of course, but overall the landing was very smooth. There were also a lot of things that were already familiar to me. Of course, there are some significant cultural differences, but none that led to any real shock. The thing that surprised me at the beginning was how quickly everyone adopts the informal form of address when talking to one another – I wasn’t really used to that. If anything could be said to be shocking, it would be the weather.

When I arrived in Tallinn in early March, winter still hadn’t left the Baltic States. The climate is warmer and dryer in Baku. However, the first flowers are starting to bloom here now and spring has arrived.

Have you discovered any parallels between here and Baku?

Die große Parallele ist das sowjetische Erbe in Form von historischen Gemeinsamkeiten – und heute erkennbar an dem schwierigen Verhältnis zum Nachbarn Russland. Estland, Lettland und Litauen haben hier aber mittlerweile eine komplett andere geopolitische Ausgangsposition als Aserbaidschan. Sie sind Mitglieder der NATO und EU. Ihre Situationen sind deswegen kaum mit der aserbaidschanischen zu vergleichen. Denn Baku orientiert sich zwar gen Westen, liegt aber dennoch nach wie vor zwischen Ost und West. Wohingegen die baltischen Staaten ganz klar in den Westen integriert sind. Sie sind zu wichtigen Bestandteilen der EU herangewachsen.

The main one is the Soviet legacy. This has created historical similarities between the two countries, and continues to be felt today in the form of their difficult relationships with their neighbour Russia. However, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have manoeuvred themselves into a completely different geopolitical starting position to Azerbaijan over the years – now they are members of NATO and the EU. This means that it is difficult to compare their situation to that of Azerbaijan.

While Baku is turning its focus towards the Western world, it remains caught between East and West as ever. In contrast, it is clear that the Baltic States have integrated themselves into the West and have evolved into important members of the EU.

Eine Parallele ist mir heute allerdings schon aufgefallen. Nämlich habe ich auf dem Weg zum Büro eine Gedenktafel zur Unabhängigkeitserklärung Lettlands 1918 gesehen. Auch Aserbaidschan hat sich damals von Russland unabhängig erklärt, was im heutigen kulturellen Gedächtnis eine genauso wichtige Rolle spielt wie in den baltischen Staaten.

However, there is one parallel that I noticed just today.

I was on my way to the office when I noticed a plaque commemorating Latvia’s declaration of independence in 1918. Azerbaijan, too, declared itself independent of Russia at that time, a fact which plays just as important a role in the country’s cultural memory nowadays as it does in the Baltic States.

Was hat Sie zu dem Wechsel ins Baltikum bewegt?

What prompted you to move to the Baltic region?

Nach 13 Jahren im Südkaukasus war es für mich an der Zeit, eine neue Herausforderung zu finden und die Leitung von gleich drei Büros in Estland, Lettland und Litauen zu übernehmen hat mich sofort gereizt. Ich hatte im Mai 2015 den estnischen Präsidenten Toomas Hendrik Ilves bei einer Rede im DIHK [Deutscher Industrie- und Handelskammertag] erlebt. Er hat sehr charismatisch und gut begründet dargestellt, warum Estland eine Vorreiterrolle für e-Government für Europa einnehmen kann. Das hat mich sehr beeindruckt. In Riga war ich auch schon das ein oder andere Mal, beispielsweise im Mai 2015 während der lettischen EURatspräsidentschaft. Damals hatten wir von der AHK Aserbaidschan an einem Business-Treffen im Vorfeld des Gipfels der Östlichen Partnerschaft teilgenommen.

After thirteen years in the South Caucasus, I felt it was the right time to seek a new challenge and the opportunity to take the reins at three offices in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania appealed to me immediately. In May 2015, I saw the Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves give a speech at the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK). He made a very charismatic and well-founded argument as to why Estonia could play a pioneering role in egovernment in Europe, which impressed me a great deal. I’d also visited Riga a couple of times, for instance in May 2015 during the Latvian presidency of the Council of the EU. Our delegation from the AHK Azerbaijan was there for a business meeting as part of the Eastern Partnership summit.

What key issues have you chosen to focus on in your work for the AHK?

You begin by taking stock of the situation – where is the AHK right now? And we are right in the thick of it.

We are assessing which internal processes and structures we can improve, paying special attention to the service we offer our members as well as the other services we provide.

INTERVIEW Thematisch zeichnen sich für mich zwei Schwerpunkte ab. Das eine ist der Bereich der beruflichen Bildung, bei dem wir in Lettland schon erste gute und merkbare Erfolge mit dem VETnet-Projekt erzielt haben. Jetzt geht es in meinen Augen darum, diese Erfolge nach Estland und Litauen zu transportieren, um auch dort Reformen im Berufsbildungssystem voranzutreiben. Insofern war ich froh, dass ich im April mit der Wirtschaftsdelegation unter Leitung von Litauens Präsidentin Dalia Grybauskaitė in Berlin auch über diese Themen sprechen konnte.

Two key topics stand out for me. The first is vocational training, an area in which we have already been seeing good results in Latvia thanks to the VETnet project.

In my view, the next step will be to translate these successess across into Estonia and Lithuania in order to drive forward reforms to the vocational training systems there, too. In this regard, I was pleased that I got the chance to talk to the trade delegation led by the Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė about these issues in Berlin in April.

Der zweite Themenbereich – IKT und Digitalisierung – ist keine Überraschung. Hier gibt es Synergien: Alle drei baltischen Länder möchten ihre Vorreiterrollen weiter ausbauen und auch in Deutschland gibt es starke Branchenvertreter wie Siemens und Bosch sowie bedeutende Trends, wie die Industrie 4.0, die bereits jetzt beherrschendes Thema auf der größten Industriemesse der Welt, der Hannover Messe, ist. Zwischen den vier Staaten eine bessere Vernetzung hinzubekommen, das stelle ich mir als eine Hauptaufgabe der AHK vor. In diesem Sinne haben wir uns am 29. April 2016 in Berlin mit Vertretern der Rigaer und Berliner Startup-Gemeinden zusammengesetzt und gemeinsam Aspekte der möglichen Zusammenarbeit identifiziert.

The second key topic will come as no surprise: the world of IT and digitalisation. Synergies already exist here: all three Baltic states want to build on their pioneering roles, while in Germany, too, you have industry heavy-hitters such as Siemens and Bosch and major trends such as Industry 4.0, a theme which is dominating the Hannover Messe – the world’s largest industrial trade fair – as we speak. For me, building a stronger network between the four countries is one of the AHK’s key objectives. With this in mind, we went to Berlin on 29 April 2016 to meet up with representatives from the local startup community and their counterparts from Riga, in order to spend some time working together to identify opportunities for collaboration.

Lidl opens logistics centre in Kaunas

Litauer bekommen schon bald ein größeres Angebot an Lebensmittelläden, denn der Markteinstieg des Lebensmitteldiscounters Lidl in dem baltischen Land rückt immer näher. Lidl eröffnete am 14. April 2016 einen Logistikkomplex im Bezirk Kaunas. Von dort aus wird die Handelskette ihre zukünftigen Filialen innerhalb Litauens mit heimischen und importierten Waren versorgen. Diese sollen schon in wenigen Monaten ihre Türen für die Konsumenten öffnen.

Lithuanian shoppers will soon have a wider range of grocery stores to choose from, as discounter Lidl is making its final preparations for establishing itself on the market in this Baltic country. On 14 April 2016, the chain retailer opened a logistics complex in the Kaunas district, from where it will be able to supply its future outlets with domestic and imported goods. In just a few months’ time, these stores will be ready to open their doors to customers.

Lidl ist seit 2002 mit der UAB Lidl Lietuva in Litauen vertreten. Ab 2010 begann der Konzern, intensiv in den Standort zu investieren. Im Frühling 2015 begann der Bau des Warenlagers in der Freihandelszone Kaunas. Rund 38 Mio. Euro nahm Lidl dafür in die Hand und hat eines der modernsten Lager dieser Art in den baltischen Staaten errichtet.

Auf einem Grundstück mit der Größe von sechs Fußballfeldern bietet das Zentrum 42.800 m² für Lagerräume und Büros. Allein die Kühlräume sind mit 14.000 m² so groß wie zwei Fußballfelder.

Lidl has been represented in Lithuania by UAB Lidl Lietuva since 2002. In 2010 the group began to invest more heavily in this location, with construction of the goods warehouse in the Kaunas Free Economic Zone beginning in spring 2015. Lidl invested some EUR 38 million in this undertaking, resulting in a warehouse that ranks among the most cutting-edge of its kind in the Baltic States. Spread over a plot measuring 42,800 m² – the size of six football fields – the centre offers ample space for storage and offices. At 14,000 m², the cold-storage rooms alone are as big as two football fields.

Die ersten Regale im Lager sind bereits mit Waren von längerer Haltbarkeit gefüllt. Auch die Mitarbeiterzahl der litauischen Niederlassung steigt rapide an. Im März waren noch etwa 350 Mitarbeiter bei Lidl Lietuva angestellt. Nur einen Monat später lag die Zahl laut Verslo Žinios schon bei über 1.300.

Die Eröffnungen der ersten Filialen an über zehn in Litauen verteilten Standorten sind im Frühsommer 2016 geplant. Ein genaues Datum ist noch nicht bekanntgegeben.

The warehouse is already starting to be stocked with goods that have a long shelf life, while the number of staff employed by the Lithuanian subsidiary is also growing rapidly. Back in March, Lidl Lietuva had around 350 employees on the books. Just one month later, according to Lithuanian newspaper Verslo žinios, this number had risen to more than 1,300. The first Lidl branches, at ten locations all around Lithuania, are scheduled to open in early summer 2016. The exact date is not yet announced.

Herr Roussev-Peine, das Logistikzentrum ist einsatzbereit. Was ist der nächste Schritt?

Nun eröffnen wir unsere Geschäfte. Derzeit bereiten wir mehr als zehn Standorte für den Betrieb vor, schulen unser Personal, sammeln unser Sortiment ein usw. Es ist noch viel zu tun.

Mr. Roussev-Peine, the logistics center is operational. What is the next step?

Now we will open up our stores. We are currently preparing more than ten locations for operation, train our employees, collect the assortment, etc.

There are still lots of steps left to do.

Wie viele weitere Geschäfte sind geplant?

Eine genaue Zahl kann ich nicht nennen. Natürlich planen wir die Eröffnung weiterer Geschäfte. Anfangs wird es wird aber hauptsächlich Standorte mit einem Einzugsgebiet von mehr als 20,000 Einwohnern geben. Litauen hat drei Millionen Einwohner und einige Gebiete sind dünn besiedelt.

Die Anzahl wird also nicht ins Unermessliche wachsen. Sollte ein Gebiet allerdings ausreichend bewohnt sein und wir finden einen guten Standort, wollen wir dort natürlich eine Filiale eröffnen.

How many more stores are planned after that?

I cannot tell you a specific number, but of course we plan to open up more stores as we proceed. However, at the beginning there will mainly be locations where there are more than 20,000 people in the catchment area. Lithuania has three million people and some areas are sparsely populated, so the number of Lidl stores will not rise to infinity. Nevertheless, given that there are enough people in the area and we find a good location, then this is where we want a Lidl store to be.

Wie passen Sie die Marke Lidl dem lokalen Markt an?

Lidl hat über die Jahre der Expansion ein Marketing-Konzept entwickelt, das bei der Erschließung neuer Märkte stetig verbessert wird. Es umfasst technologische Standards, Logistikprozesse, Gebäudestrukturen, Qualitätsstandards und die Ausbildung des Personals. In Litauen nutzen wir den neuesten Entwicklungsstand. Unser Logistikzentrum ist hochmodern. Unsere Führungskräfte wurden an gut aufgestellten Lidl-Standorten im Ausland ausgebildet. Dieses Konzept hat an anderen Standorten sehr gut funktioniert. Wir sind sicher, dass es in Litauen genauso erfolgreich sein wird.

How do you adapt the Lidl brand to local customs?

There is a marketing concept that Lidl has created over the decades of expanding and improves every time a new market is developed. It covers technological standards, logistics processes, building structures, quality standards and the training of staff. In Lithuania we are using the latest developments of these elements. Our logistics center is stateof-the-art. Our management staff is trained abroad in well-set Lidl locations. This is a concept that has worked extremely well for Lidl in other countries and we are confident that it will be successful here in Lithuania as well.

Allerdings gibt es Faktoren, die wir nicht einfach kopieren können. Dies sind die Vorlieben der Verbraucher und die Verfügbarkeit von Lieferanten.

Dem ersten begegnen wir in einem Lernprozess: Wir können nicht voraussagen, welches Sortiment die litauischen Kunden bevorzugen. Also lassen wir sie wählen. Wir werten regelmäßig unsere Verkaufszahlen aus, um zu sehen, welche Produkte gut angenommen werden. Dem zweiten Faktor ist nicht so leicht zu begegnen. Vielmehr ist es unsere größte Herausforderung. Lidl hat hohe Qualitätsstandards, insbesondere für Nahrungsmittel, die von den Lieferanten weltweit erfüllt werden müssen. Also suchen wir nach Partnern, die unsere Standards gewährleisten. Auch wollen wir so viele lokale Produkte wie möglich anbieten. 320 haben wir bereits, es sollen aber noch mehr werden.

However, there are factors for which we cannot just copy and paste a general strategy. Those are consumer preference and availability of product suppliers. The first is dealt with a learning process: we cannot predict what assortment the Lithuanian customers prefer most. So we let them choose. Every few months we look at the sale figures to determine what products were well received. The second factor is not that easily met. In fact, it is the biggest challenge we face. Lidl has high quality standards especially for food products. These need to be met by our suppliers worldwide. So, we are looking for those partners that can ensure our standards. Also, we want to offer as many local products as possible.

We’ve already secured 320 local products, but our goal is to offer more.

Wie wird Lidl aus ihrer Sicht den litauischen Lebensmitteleinzelhandel verändern?

Ich glaube, Lidl bringt ein neues Konzept an den Markt: hohe Qualität zu tragbaren Preisen. Wir führen ein neues Preiskonzept und Qualitätsstandards ein. Das werden die Kunden bemerken. Wir haben keine Angst vor der Konkurrenz.

In your personal opinion, how will Lidl affect the Lithuanian food retail market?

I think Lidl brings a new concept to the market: high quality for an affordable prize. We bring a new price concept and quality standards to the table and customers are going to realize that. We are not afraid of the competition.

Im Rahmen der Jahrestagung am 22. März 2016 in Tallinn ist Thomas Schöllkopf (ERGO International AG) für eine dritte Amtszeit als Präsident bestätigt worden. Maren Diale-Schellschmidt wurde feierlich verabschiedet. Florian Schröder stellte sich als neuer Geschäftsführender Vorstand vor.

Thomas Schöllkopf (ERGO International AG) was reelected for a third term as President at the Annual Conference on 22 March 2016. We wished a fond farewell to Maren Diale-Schellschmidt and Florian Schröder introduced himself to members as the new Chief Executive Officer.

Drei „Andenkschweinchen“, eins für jedes baltische Land, warteten auf Maren Diale-Schellschmidt. Acht Jahre lang – bis Februar 2016 – war sie Geschäftsführerin der AHK. Nun wechselte sie als Delegierte der Deutschen Wirtschaft nach Kenia. Für die überregionale Jahrestagung der Deutsch-Baltischen Handelskammer am 22. März 2016 war sie noch einmal nach Tallinn gereist und nahm nun die Glücksschweine mit einiger Rührung entgegen. Im Alten Leherhaus am Tallinner Rathausplatz dankten AHK-Präsident Thomas Schöllkopf, die Regionalvorstände, die mehr als 100 anwesenden Mitglieder und das Mitarbeiterteam Diale-Schellschmidt für die vergangenen Jahre der Zusammenarbeit. Jedes der Schweinchen ist ein Sammlerstück mit estnischem, lettischem bzw. litauischem Bezug. Das Mitarbeiterteam überreichte außerdem ein mit persönlichen Widmungen bestücktes Fotoalbum.

Three little pig figurines, one for each of the Baltic States, awaited Maren Diale-Schellschmidt as a memento of her time as Chief Executive Officer of the German-Baltic Chamber of Commerce (AHK) – for eight years until February 2016. She is moving to Kenya as a Delegate for German Industry and Commerce. Travelling to Tallinn once again for the AHK’s supra-regional Annual Conference on 22 March 2016, she accepted the tokens of good luck with some emotion. At the old Tallinn Teachers’ House in Town Hall Square, AHK President Thomas Schöllkopf, together with the regional boards, the 100 plus members present and the staff team thanked Diale-Schellschmidt for her work over the last few years. Each of the little pigs is a collector’s item with some connection to Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania. The staff team also presented her with a photo album full of personal dedications.

Im Nachgang an die Versammlung hielt Google-Gastredner Torsten Scholl einen Vortrag zum Thema: "The Future Function: Problems x Technology x Radicality" – ein Konzept, mit dem Google zukunftsweisende, erfolgsversprechende Ideen identifiziert. Herr Schöllkopf, wo sehen Sie die Arbeitsschwerpunkte der AHK während Ihrer dritten Amtsperiode?

An erster Stelle sehe ich Kontinuität. Die Handelskammer arbeitet unentwegt daran, die Attraktivität der baltischen Standorte zu steigern. Das sind laufende Prozesse, die in den vergangenen Jahren eingesetzt haben und sich in den nächsten fortsetzen müssen. Ich möchte hier zwei wichtige Aufgaben hervorheben. Zum einen ist der Faktor „Mitarbeiterqualifikation“ in allen drei Staaten für die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit nicht zu unterschätzen.

Zum anderen geht es mir um die Vermarktung der baltischen Staaten in Deutschland.

Mr Schöllkopf, where do you think the focus of the AHK’s work will lie during your third term?

EN

I put continuity first. The Chamber of Commerce will continue to work unswervingly to increase the attractiveness of the Baltic States. These are ongoing processes that have been introduced over the last few years and must continue into the next. I’d like to highlight two important duties here. One is not to underestimate the effect that “staff qualification” in all three states can have on our competitive edge.

From my perspective, the other is to market the Baltic States in Germany.

Sie sprechen die duale Ausbildung an. Was unternimmt die AHK auf diesem Gebiet?

Die duale Berufsausbildung ist ein wesentlicher Aspekt der Mitarbeiterqualifikation, aber nicht der einzige. Beim Thema Ausbildung sind wir als AHK mit dem VETnet-Projekt in Lettland und Bestrebungen, ähnliche Initiativen in Estland und Litauen zu starten, schon gut positioniert. Ich möchte unsere Aufmerksamkeit aber auch auf den bestehenden Arbeitsmarkt in den baltischen Staaten lenken und auf die Frage, wie man die baltischen Arbeitswelten für Rückkehrer und für Westeuropäer attraktiv gestalten kann. Neben einer praxisorientierten Berufsausbildung ist dies für mich die zweite Säule, um den Fachkräftemangel zu reduzieren. Wir stehen dabei in engem Austausch mit Ministerien, Behörden, aber auch Unternehmen und Multiplikatoren – nicht zuletzt unseren eigenen Mitgliedern.

You’ve touched on dual training. What does the AHK hope to do in this area?

Dual vocational training is an essential part of staff qualification but not the only one. When it comes to training, we as the AHK are already well-positioned with the VETnet project in Latvia and our efforts to set up similar initiatives in Estonia and Lithuania. I would also like to direct our attention towards the existing labour market in the Baltic States, however, and the issue of how to make the Baltic workplace more attractive for repatriates and western Europeans. In addition to practice-based vocational training, I feel this is the second pillar required for tackling the shortage of skilled workers. In this regard, we are working closely with ministers and authorities as well as with companies and opinion leaders – not least our own members.

Welche Herausforderungen bestehen bei der Vermarktung der baltischen Staaten in Deutschland?

Insgesamt beobachte ich ein steigendes Interesse auf baltischer Seite an Deutschland als Absatzmarkt. Das ist ein äußerst erfreulicher Trend, den wir als AHK aufgreifen wollen. Wir müssen unsere Werbung für baltische Unternehmen in Deutschland stärken. Die größte Herausforderung für baltische Unternehmer auf dem deutschen Markt liegt darin, dass die baltische Region für Deutsche intransparent ist. Das Image der baltischen Staaten in Deutschland ist zwar gut. Deutsche kennen mittlerweile die Skype-Erfolgsstory, die hervorragende IKT-Branche und hören regelmäßig von den guten Wirtschaftswerten. Dann endet das Bewusstsein für die Region bei vielen jedoch. Hier müssen wir als AHK ansetzen und insbesondere auf dem deutschen B2B-Markt noch intensiver für baltische Produkte werben. Unsere Messearbeit und Markteintrittsdienstleistungen sind dafür unsere Hauptinstrumente.

Thomas Schöllkopf has shaped the AHK with his voluntary commitment for several years now. At the Annual conference 2016 he was re-elected for a third term into the Executive Board. He will continue his work as AHK-President.

Overall I can see a growing interest in Germany as a target market from the Baltic side. This trend is extremely welcome and we as the AHK want to take full advantage of it. We need to boost our marketing for Baltic companies in Germany. The greatest challenge faced by Baltic entrepreneurs in the German market is that Germans find the Baltic region opaque. The Baltic states certainly have a good image in Germany. Germans know all about the Skype success story, the outstanding ICT sector and regularly hear of favourable economic figures. But that is the extent of most people’s knowledge of the region. This is where we as the AHK need to intervene, particularly by marketing Baltic products even more intensively on the German B2B market. Our work on trade shows and market entry services are our main tools for achieving this.

Rhenus Svoris, the Lithuanian subsidiary of the Rhenus Group, is collaborating with Baltic Sea Property AS, the major investor from Norway, to build a modern logistics complex in Vilnius, with investment totalling EUR 10 million. Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius, who took part in the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone on 6 April 2016, highlighted the strong partnership that Lithuania has enjoyed with both Germany and Norway for many years, commenting that this could be seen in the ongoing expansion of the two countries’ business activities in Lithuania, which has helped to boost the local economy. Lithuania’s geographical location and its well developed logistics infrastructure enable goods to be transported between the EU and the CIS countries. The global financial services provider arvato Financial Solutions opened a new IT development centre in Tallinn on 11 February 2016 and plans to take on up to 100 IT specialists over the next few years. Staff at the IT development centre will work together with staff across Europe and throughout the world to set programs and manage international customer support systems. Am 24. Februar 2016 wurde ein Ausbildungszentrum der Firma Robert Bosch im Laborhaus der Technischen Universität Riga feierlich eröffnet.

Das Ausbildungszentrum dient der Ausbildung von hochqualifiziertem Personal für den Einsatz in Automobilwerkstätten. Auch die Studenten der Fakultät für Maschinenbau, Transport und Luftfahrt profitieren von den praktischen und theoretischen Elementen des Zentrums. Die Robert BoschNiederlassung in Lettland hat 100.000 Euro in das Ausbildungszentrum investiert. "Das neue Trainingszentrum wird eine neue Qualitätsstufe der Mitarbeiterschulung für die lettische Automobilindustrie bezeichnen und damit eine höhere Qualitätssicherung der Autoparks leisten. Die Tätigkeiten von Robert Bosch in Lettland haben sich immer auf Fortschritt, Komfort und Fahrsicherheit konzentriert. Um jedoch alle Vorteile modernster technologischer Fortschritte zu nutzen, benötigt man Mitarbeiter mit einer bestmöglichen Qualifizierung. Das deutsch-litauische Unternehmen Danpower Baltic UAB stellte vor kurzem den Bau eines KWKKraftwerks fertig, das mit Biokraftstoff betrieben und für die Heizperiode 2016-2017 in Betrieb genommen wird. Es ist das erste Kraftwerk seiner Art in Kaunas. Dieses Kraftwerk produziert mehr Strom- und Wärmeenergie bei geringerem Kraftstoffverbrauch, weshalb es auch günstiger ist als ein übliches Biobrennstoff-Heizwerk. Insgesamt hat Danpower Baltic in dieses Projekt 20 Mio. Euro investiert. Die Vertreter der Unternehmen führen an, dass ein mit Biokraftstoff betriebenes KWKKraftwerk nicht nur zur Verringerung der Umweltverschmutzung in Kaunas beitragen wird, sondern ebenfalls den Wettbewerb zwischen den Wärmeherstellern verstärkt und den Verbraucherpreis beeinflusst. The German-Lithuanian company Danpower Baltic UAB recently finished building a CHP plant, which runs on biofuel and will come into service for the heating period 2016-2017. It is the first power plant of its kind in Kaunas. This power plant generates more electricity and thermal energy for a lower fuel consumption, making it cheaper than a standard biofuel heating plant. Danpower Baltic invested a total of EUR 20 million in this project. Representatives from the company claim that a CHP plant run on biofuel will not only contribute to reducing pollution in Kaunas but also heighten competition between thermal energy producers and have an impact on consumer prices. Die Rettenmeier Gruppe mit Sitz Wilburgstetten in Bayern hat von IKEA ein Sägewerk im lettischen Inčukalns gekauft. Das Sägewerk liegt auf demselben Grundstück wie Rettenmeier Baltic Timber.

Die 215 Mitarbeiter werden übernommen und weiterbeschäftigt. Rettenmeier erweitert somit den Jahreseinschnitt seiner Sägewerke von 2,5 Mio. auf 2,83 Mio. Festmeter. Das Unternehmen übernimmt in diesem Zuge die Gesellschaft Inčukalns Timber zu 100 Prozent. Zuvor gehörten Rettenmeier 50 Prozent der Anteile der bislang gemeinsam mit IKEA betriebenen Rundholzeinkaufsgesellschaft. www.rettenmeier.com

Schon jetzt bringen sich die Parteien in Stellung.

Grund für die AHK, gemeinsam mit den Auslandshandelskammern Großbritanniens, Dänemarks, Norwegens und Finnlands eine Talkrunde mit den führenden litauischen Politikern in Vilnius zu organisieren. Gut 80 Besucher waren am 19. April 2016 ins Kempinski Hotel gekommen, um aktiv mit der führenden Polit-Riege über Themen wie Arbeitsmarkt, Investitionen, Korruption und Fachkräftemangel zu diskutieren.

Lithuania’s political parties are already beginning to gear up for the autumn, when the country will be electing a new government. The AHK Baltic States saw this as the perfect time to team up with the Chambers of Commerce for the UK, Denmark, Norway and Finland and organise a day of talks with Lithuania’s leading politicians in Vilnius. Some 80 visitors convened at the Kempinski Hotel on 19 April 2016 in order to engage in discussions with prominent political figures on issues such as the job market, investment, corruption and the shortage of skilled workers.

Vor allem Gabrielius Landsbergis, Vorsitzender der konservativen TS-LKD, brach dabei eine Lanze für mehr praktische Ausbildungsinhalte. 80.000 zusätzliche Jobs seien in Litauen möglich, wenn unter anderem das Bildungssystem reformiert werde. Landsbergis schwebt dabei eine Orientierung am deutschen Modell vor, das auch in Litauen zunehmend auf Interesse stößt. Leading the call for a greater focus on practical training was Gabrielius Landsbergis, leader of the conservative TS-LKD party, who believes that 80,000 new jobs could be created in Lithuania if, among other things, the education system were to be reformed.

What Landsbergis has in mind here is an approach that draws inspiration from the German model, which is attracting increasing interest in Lithuania.

In this respect, Latvia is one step ahead of its southern neighbour, as it has been running the successful VETnet programme for two years now with the support of the government, developing new, dual job profiles and vocational training opportunities. “Surveys show that 88 per cent of investors are unsatisfied with college leavers’ levels of knowledge,” said Landsbergis, directing this criticism at government representative Rimantas Vaitkus from the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania. Vaitkus, however, was not interested in hearing about these sorts of statistics. He argued that Lithuania is on the right path, taking effective steps towards combating corruption while also successfully entering new markets such as the US meat industry, where the country has carved out a prime position for itself.

So das Ergebnis der jüngsten Konjunkturumfrage der Deutsch-Baltischen Handelskammer (AHK) aus dem Frühjahr 2016, die im Rahmen einer internationalen Umfrage in Mittel- und Osteuropa (MOE) stattfand. / Annika Bostelmann

Bei dem Ranking von 19 Ländern in Mittel- und Osteuropa sowie Russland und China teilt sich Estland mit der Slowakei den dritten Platz – nach Tschechien und Polen. Lettland und Litauen teilen sich die fünfte Position. Betrachtet man nur die Antworten aus den baltischen Staaten, führt Estland das Ranking an, gefolgt von Lettland und Litauen auf einem gemeinsamen zweiten Platz.

The appeal of the Baltic States becomes especially clear when they are compared to other locations. In the league table of 19 countries in Central and Eastern Europe as well as Russia and China, Estonia and Slovakia are joint third behind the Czech Republic and Poland, while Latvia and Lithuania come in fifth. When the survey results for the Baltic States are considered on their own, Estonia comes out on top, followed by Latvia and Lithuania in joint second place.

Verbessert haben sich die Werte der Zahlungsdisziplin und der Berufsbildung – ein positives Signal an die Bemühungen Lettlands, auf dem Gebiet des Berufsbildungssystems mehr praktische Elemente einzubeziehen.

Jedoch haben sich viele Standortfaktoren Lettlands gegenüber 2015 nach Meinung der Investoren kaum verbessert. Die Punkte „Transparenz bei öffentlicher Vergabe“ sowie „Qualifikation der Arbeitnehmer“ werden schwächer eingestuft.

Among the factors to receive good scores from German investors in Latvia were access to public funds and labour costs. Payment discipline and vocational training also achieved higher scores this year – a positive indication of the country’s efforts to incorporate more practical elements into its vocational training system. However, investors thought that several of Lativa’s location factors had not improved much at all since 2015. Scores dropped for “transparency of public procurement” and “qualification of employees”.

Bei den Standortkriterien erhält Litauen gute Noten vor allem für seine Infrastruktur und die Qualität und Verfügbarkeit lokaler Zulieferer. Problematisch bleibt aus Sicht der deutschen Investoren das unflexible Arbeitsrecht. Es erhält die einzige Benotung unter dem MOE-Durchschnitt. Schon in der Blitzumfrage zu diesem Thema im März 2015 zeigte sich die große Mehrheit mit dem momentanen System unzufrieden. „Wir hoffen auf rasche Reformen, da nur internationale Investoren in Litauen auf Dauer für Arbeitsplätze und bessere Löhne sorgen können. Dazu müssen die Regelungen aber internationalen Standards angepasst werden“, sagt Schröder. Handlungsbedarf für die Regierung sehen die Befragten zudem bei der Transparenz der öffentlichen Vergabe und bei der Bekämpfung von Korruption und Kriminalität.

In terms of its location criteria, Lithuania achieved high scores in particular for its infrastructure and for the quality and availability of local suppliers. However, the country’s inflexible labour law still poses problems for German investors, with this factor being the only one to achieve a score below the CEE average. The quick survey conducted on this topic back in March 2015 revealed that the large majority of investors are unhappy with the present situation.

“We are hoping for rapid reforms, as international investors in Lithuania are the only ones who can create jobs and improve wages in the long term. For this to happen, however, regulations must be adapted to meet international standards,” says Schröder. Respondents also thought that the state still has work to do in regards to transparency in public procurement and combating corruption and criminality.

Im Frühjahr 2015 zeigten sich die Befragten deutlich verhaltener. In Litauen erwartet jeder Zweite eine weitere Verbesserung der Lage.

Die Stimmung bezüglich der Lage des eigenen Unternehmens ist ebenso positiv – ein Trend, der sich in den vergangenen Jahren bestätigt hat. Mit 97 Prozent für Estland und Lettland sowie 96 Prozent für Litauen bewerten fast alle Befragten die gegenwärtige Lage des eigenen Geschäfts als gut oder zufriedenstellend. Auch das Vertrauen in die Zukunft ist stark. Nur vereinzelt erwarten Befragte für das Jahr 2016 eine Verschlechterung ihrer eigenen Geschäftslage. Hingegen rechnen in Lettland Zwei von Drei mit einer Verbesserung, in Litauen ist es jeder Zweite, in Estland immerhin 41 Prozent.

said that they were happy with the present economic situation. 28 per cent of respondents in Estonia and 26 per cent in Latvia are confident that the economic situation will continue to improve over the course of 2016. Respondents were much more cautious back in spring 2015. Half of the respondents in Lithuania expect the situation to improve further.

Recent years have seen a positive trend in respondents’ views on the position of their own companies, which was again the case this year. Almost all respondents – 97 per cent for Estonia and Latvia and 96 per cent for Lithuania – rated the current situation for their own business as “good” or “satisfactory”. Levels of confidence in what the future holds are also high.

Only a very small number of respondents expect their own business situation to worsen in 2016. Conversely, two thirds in Latvia, half in Lithuania and 41 per cent in Estonia expect their situation to improve.

KONJUNKTURUMFRAGE | ECONOMIC SURVEY Revenue expected to grow in Latvia in particular “We’re seeing a much more optimistic climate in Latvia now than we were in spring 2015,” says Schröder. “Last year, German companies based in the region were concerned about the ongoing geopolitical issues. However, most now expect their own business to pick up in 2016.” Two thirds of respondents anticipate an increase in revenue – 22 percentage points more than in spring 2015. Meanwhile, the number of respondents expecting their export activities to improve in the current year rose to 57 per cent, more than double the 2015 figure. With investment on the rise, 43 per cent of respondents in Estonia are planning to increase expenditure – three times as many as in spring 2015. In Latvia and Lithuania too, most respondents are expecting investment levels to at least remain constant in 2016.

Der Anteil derer, die eine Verbesserung ihrer Exporttätigkeiten für das laufende Jahr sehen, hat sich im Vergleich zu 2015 auf 57 Prozent mehr als verdoppelt. Mit steigenden Investitionen planen in Estland mit 43 Prozent dreimal so viele Befragte wie im Frühjahr 2015 höhere Ausgaben. Auch in Lettland und Litauen gehen die Befragten mehrheitlich von mindestens gleichbleibenden Investitionen in 2016 aus.

Companies criticise lack of practical elements in vocational training

Für das Berufsbildungssystem, Sonderthema der diesjährigen Befragung, wünscht sich die deutsche Wirtschaft weitere Reformen. Die Mehrheit der Befragten zeigt sich nur teilweise mit dem jetzigen Berufsbildungssystem zufrieden, ein Drittel sogar unzufrieden. Drei von Vier fordern mehr Praxis in Betrieben sowie eine stärkere Beteiligung der Unternehmen bei der Erstellung der Curricula. Jeder Zweite wünscht sich mehr praktische Projekte innerhalb der Schule. Insgesamt, so das Echo, fehle die Orientierung der Ausbildung an den heutigen Anforderungen des Arbeitsmarktes.

German businesses have called for greater reforms to the vocational training system, which was the special topic of this year’s survey. Most respondents were only partly satisfied with the current system, while as many as a third were unsatisfied.

Three quarters think that more work placements need to be offered and want businesses to get more involved in drawing up curricula. Half of the respondents want to see more practical projects being organised in schools. The general consensus is that the training on offer is not sufficiently geared towards the demands of today’s labour market.

Denn in Lettland unterstützen wir bereits jetzt mit dem VETnet-Projekt Pilotinitiativen und formen gemeinsam mit der Regierung neue Ausbildungsprogramme. In Litauen und Estland sind jetzt vor allem die Regierungen am Zug.“

Nine out of every ten companies surveyed said that, if the right project came along, they would be happy to participate voluntarily in pilot intiatives relating to dual vocational training in order to give a boost to practical activities. “Practical training is incredibly important to entrepreneurs,” says Schröder. “This reaffirms our belief that our work with the Latvian government is on the right track. We are already supporting pilot initiatives in the country through the VETnet project and working with the government to create new training programmes. Now it’s time for the Latvian and Estonian governments to step up to the plate too.”

AHK-Berufsbildungspreis in Lettland zieht Bewerber an Im Rahmen des Preises der Deutschen Wirtschaft hat das VETnet-Team in diesem Jahr in Lettland erstmalig einen Berufsbildungssonderpreis ausgeschrieben. Der AHK-Berufsbildungspreis„Wir bilden aus“ soll auf die duale Berufsausbildung als eine Art der beruflichen Bildung in Lettland aufmerksam machen und das Image der beruflichen Bildung in der lettischen Gesellschaft heben. Der Preis ehrt Betriebe, Berufsschulen, Verbände und andere Partner, die schon heute in die nachhaltige Entwicklung der praxisorientierten Bildung investieren.

AHK Vocational Training Award in Latvia draws in applicants This year, the VETnet team in Latvia will be awarding a special prize for vocational training as part of the German Business Award. The “We train people” prize from the German-Baltic Chamber of Commerce (AHK) aims to raise awareness of dual vocational training as a training option that can be pursued in Latvia and to improve the image of vocational training in Latvian society. The prize honours businesses, vocational colleges, associations and other partners that are already doing their bit to ensure that practical training has a strong future.

16 Kandidaten haben die Chance genutzt und ihre Bewerbungen eingereicht. Unter ihnen sind sowohl Betriebe als auch Berufsschulen, die in Kooperationsprojekten mit Betrieben stehen.„Wir haben im ersten Jahr nicht mit so vielen Bewerbern gerechnet“, sagt Diāna Krastiņa, VETnet-Projektleiterin: „Die große Nachfrage zeigt uns, dass ein solcher Preis durchaus attraktiv ist.“ Aus den Bewerbern hat die Fachjury anhand der bereits im Vorfeld festgelegten Kriterien fünf Finalisten ausgewählt. Im Mai wird die Jury diese besuchen und die Umsetzung der Kriterien einer betrieblichen Ausbildung genauer unter die Lupe nehmen. Der Preis wird am 26. Mai 2016 in Riga verliehen.

16 candidates took up the opportunity to submit an application, among them both businesses and vocational colleges that are working on cooperative projects with various companies. “We did not expect to get so many applicants in our first year,” says Diāna Krastiņa, the VETnet project manager. “The huge demand shows us just how attractive an award like this is.” An expert jury has now selected five finalists from the candidates who applied, based on the criteria that were defined at the preliminary stage. The jury will visit these finalists in May in order to get a closer look at just how they implement the principles of vocational training. The prize will be awarded on 26 May 2016 in Riga.

Neue Ausbildungsjahrgänge starten im September 2016 Zwei neue Ausbildungsjahrgänge werden derzeit für das Schuljahr 2016/2017 vorbereitet. In Liepāja unterstützt das VETnet-Team die Erweiterung des Ausbildungsprofils des „Speditionsmitarbeiters“.

Diesen bieten zum 1. September 2016 die lokalen Betriebe zusammen mit der Berufsschule PIKC Liepājas tehnikums an. Die Schüler der allgemeinbildenden Schulen in Liepāja bekamen in Gesprächen und einem interaktiven Quiz Informationen zum neuen Angebot. Eine neue Form der Berufsberatung hat das VETnet-Team ebenso ins Leben gerufen: Ein Mix aus Seminar und Gespräch mit Vertretern der Betriebe soll Schülern die Berufsorientierung erleichtern. Auch Karriereberater der allgemeinbildenden Schulen wurden eingeladen.

Im Gespräch wurde die wirtschaftliche Bedeutung der Logistikbranche in Liepāja hervorgehoben,

In Liepāja, the VETnet team is helping to broaden the training profile for “freight forwarders”, a programme which local businesses and the vocational college PIKC Liepājas tehnikums will be offering from 1 September 2016. School pupils in Liepāja were given the opportunity to participate in discussions and take an interactive quiz to find out more about this new offer.

The VETnet team also rolled out an entirely new form of vocational guidance, consisting of a mix between a seminar and a discussion with reprentatives of enterprises with the aim of making it easier for pupils to choose a career path. Careers advisers working in schools were also invited to attend. The discussion highlighted the economic significance of the logistics industry in Liepāja, looked at the qualities

In Valmiera geht es derweil mit dem neuen Berufsbild „Maschinen- und Anlagenführer“ voran. Insgesamt sechs Betriebe bringen sich aktiv in den Arbeitsgruppen zur Ausarbeitung der Ausbildungsinhalte ein und sind bereit, eine betriebliche Ausbildung umzusetzen. Die Unternehmen haben sich zu einem Gespräch mit Jugendlichen und Karriereberatern der allgemeinbildenden Schulen zusammengesetzt. Sie planen zudem, sich an einem Berufsorientierungsfilm zu beteiligen. Die Berufsschule PIKC Valmieras tehnikums organisierte auf Initiative von VETnet an ihrem Tag der offenen Tür das erste Azubi-Speed-Dating in Valmiera.

Meanwhile the new vocational profile “machine and plant operators” is taking shape in Valmiera. A total of six enterprises are actively contributing to the working groups dedicated to drawing up the training content and are ready to offer vocational training. The companies met with pupils and careers advisers at a discussion session and are also planning to take part in a career guidance film. With support from VETnet, the vocational college PIKC Valmieras tehnikums organised the first ever “speed dating for apprentices” in Valmiera during its open day.

Deutsch-lettisches Expertentreffen von BIBB in der Berufsschule PIKC Jelgavas tehnikums Deutsche und lettische Experten trafen sich vom 13. bis 14. April in der Berufsschule PIKC Jelgavas tehnikums zu den Themen „Herausforderungen der dualen Ausbildung“ und „Qualifizierung des Berufsbildungspersonals in Lettland und Deutschland“. Das Bundesinstitut für Berufsbildung (BIBB) organisierte das Treffen im Rahmen des GOVET Projektes, um die praktische Zusammenarbeit zwischen Lettland und Deutschland in der Berufsbildung zu unterstützen. Die deutschen Experten waren stark an der Zusammenarbeit mit den lettischen Berufsschulen, den Arbeitgeberorganisationen sowie den Sozialpartnern und Betrieben interessiert und vereinbarten einen Erfahrungsaustausch auf dem Gebiet der Ausbildung der Berufschullehrer und Ausbilder.

The Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) organised the meeting as part of the GOVET project in order to foster practical cooperation between Latvia and Germany in matters relating to vocational training. The German experts showed great interest in working with the Latvian vocational colleges, employer organisations and social partners and businesses and put the arrangements in place for an exchange of experience in the field of training vocational college teachers and trainers.

Auf Initiative von BIBB reist im Herbst 2016 eine Delegation lettischer Vertreter der Berufsschulen und Unternehmen aus der Holzverarbeitungsbranche nach Deutschland. Das Ziel ist, die praktische Umsetzung der dualen Ausbildung in den Betrieben und Organisation in den Berufsschulen näher kennenzulernen und neue Ideen für eine erfolgreiche Umsetzung der dualen Ausbildung zu gewinnen. Die Herausforderungen bei der praktischen Umsetzung und bei der Gewinnung von Jugendlichen für die duale Ausbildung stehen dabei im Vordergrund.

In autumn 2016, at BIBB's initiative a delegation of Latvian representatives from vocational colleges and companies in the woodworking industry will visit Germany. Their aim will be to find out more about how to integrate dual vocational training in businesses and organisations into the vocational college programmes on a practical level, and to discover new ideas on how to successfully implement dual vocational training. The main focus will be the challenges involved in the practical aspects of implementing dual vocational training and in encouraging young people to choose this type of training.

Sie können nun zu einer Erweiterung des AHK-Angebots im Bereich der Berufsbildung beitragen.

Geschäftspräsenz in Estland, Lettland und Litauen

Commercial presence in Germany

Eine eigene Adresse und Telefonnummer in Estland, Lettland oder Litauen: Das kann für den Markteinstieg in den baltischen Staaten deutliche Vorteile bedeuten. Denn auch estnische, lettische und litauische Unternehmen setzen mehr Vertrauen in Partner, die vor Ort vertreten sind. Allerdings ist nicht immer sofort eine komplette Gründung notwendig. Über die AHK kann eine unselbstständige Repräsentanz mit Telefonnummer, Briefannahme und weiteren Leistungen in jedem der drei Länder eingerichtet werden.

Having an address and telephone number in Germany makes it much easier for foreign companies to contact German customers and boost their credibility in the eyes of their German business partners.

However, many companies from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania do not want to establish complex structures in Germany before first testing out the market.

Together with its German partner, Indipa Unternehmensservice GmbH from Düsseldorf, the GermanBaltic Chamber of Commerce (AHK) now offers this and further services to Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian companies.

„Ideal ist dies für deutsche Kunden, die zunächst den baltischen Markt testen wollen, ohne gleich aufwändige Strukturen zu errichten“, sagt Lars Gutheil, Leiter Dienstleistungen der AHK. Deutsche Unternehmen erhalten nicht nur eine Anschrift, sondern können auf Wunsch auch die drei Büros der AHK in Tallinn, Riga und Vilnius stundenweise für Gespräche mit baltischen Geschäftspartnern nutzen. „Unternehmen schaffen sich damit nicht nur eine Präsenz, sie erhalten auch Unterstützung bei Aufbau, Stärkung und Erweiterung des Vertriebs in den drei baltischen Staaten“, so Gutheil. Die AHK berate bei den ersten Schritten und könne auch aktive Unterstützung bei der Suche nach Kontakten und Partnern leisten. „Ansprechpartner aus den baltischen Staaten sehen, dass das deutsche Unternehmen bereits mit einer eigenen Adresse vor Ort ist. Das erleichtert die Kontaktaufnahme – etwa über unsere muttersprachlichen AHKMitarbeiter – enorm“, sagt Gutheil.

Eintreffende Mails und Post werden umgehend weitergeleitet. Sollte der Kunde zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt eine eigene Niederlassung in Estland, Lettland oder Litauen mit eigenem Personal und fester Geschäftsadresse gründen wollen, könne die AHK auch dabei behilflich sein und die richtigen Partner für den Gründungsprozess vermitteln, so Gutheil: „Damit komplettieren wir unser Portfolio Richtung Baltikum um eine wesentliche Komponente. Wir wollen Kunden alle Leistungen aus einer Hand anbieten, die sie für den Markteinstieg in Estland, Lettland und Litauen brauchen.“

This allows companies to establish a presence in Germany, as well as providing them with support in building up and expanding their operations in the country. The offer includes a German address and telephone number and enables companies to establish a dependent branch in Germany. “The company’s customers see that it has a presence in Germany,” says Lars Gutheil, Head of Services at the AHK. “This increases trust and makes it easier to establish contacts. Although our clients are only there in a virtual sense, they can also request meeting rooms or flexible day offices in order to meet with their German partners.”

For businesses who want to go one step further, the AHK offers its services as a local partner in Germany where, with help from Indipa, it can take over and conduct all the internal sales activities for companies from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. In this arrangement, German staff from Indipa take on the role of the workforce in a local “branch”. “This means that orders – and customer service as a whole – can be managed quickly and efficiently,” says Gutheil. “Ideally, this is done via direct online access to the Baltic company’s IT system.”

If a company then wants to set up its own branch in Germany at a later date, with its own staff and a fixed business address, the AHK can be of further help here too. As Lars Gutheil explains, “This has given a significant boost to our portfolio of services focused on Germany. We want to offer our clients everything they need for entry into the German market, all under one roof.”

Arbeitnehmerentsendung Was ist zu beachten?

Sobald ein Arbeitnehmer auf Weisung seines Arbeitgebers für einen begrenzten Zeitraum im Ausland tätig wird, liegt eine Entsendung vor. Das gilt auch, wenn der Arbeitnehmer bewusst mit einem heimischen Vertrag eingestellt wird, um im Ausland zu arbeiten. Keine Entsendung besteht, wenn ein Arbeitnehmer vor Ort mit einem lokalen Vertrag eingestellt wird. Dann gelten die arbeitsrechtlichen Bestimmungen des jeweiligen Staates.

As soon as an employee is instructed by their employer to spend a limited period working abroad, they count as a posted worker. This is also the case if an employer hires a worker in their home country with the intention of then sending them to work abroad. An employee who is hired directly on site and signs a local contract is not a posted worker. In this case, the labour law provisions of the country where the employee is working apply immediately.

Wie lange die entsandte Kraft im Ausland tätig ist, liegt meist an der Art des Projekts oder der Beschäftigung. Es gibt keine feste Zeitgrenze, der Zeitraum muss jedoch überschaubar sein. „Wichtig ist bei der Vertragsgestaltung eine korrekte sozialversicherungsrechtliche Beurteilung, um Nachzahlungsverpflichtungen für den Arbeitgeber auszuschließen“, sagt Vadim Samson, AHK-Finanzund Steuerexperte: „Außerdem gelten steuerliche Besonderheiten.“

How long an employee remains posted abroad usually depends on the type of project or the nature of their employment. There are no fixed time limits, but the length of the stay must be clearly defined. “When drawing up the contract, it is important to clarify all matters regarding social security in order to prevent the employer being liable for back payments,” says Vadim Samson, AHK finance and tax expert. “There are also special tax issues to consider too.”

Arbeitet die entsandte Person über 183 Tage im Jahr im Entsandtland, muss laut Doppelbesteuerungsabkommen die Lohnsteuer in diesem Land deklariert und bezahlt werden. Der Arbeitgeber muss dann seinen Mitarbeiter im Steuerregister sowie Arbeitsregister des Landes eintragen und monatlich die Lohnsteuer abführen. Arbeitserlaubnis und Währungen stellen dank Eurozone kein Problem dar. Ab einer gewissen Aufenthaltsdauer, in der Regel ab drei Monaten, muss sich der Mitarbeiter jedoch bei der Migrationsbehörde anmelden.

War der Mitarbeiter zuvor bereits im Heimatland tätig, kann er sozialversicherungsrechtlich im dortigen System bleiben. Laut der EU-Verordnung Nr. 883/04 können entsandte Arbeitnehmer aus EUStaaten innerhalb der Europäischen Union für 24 Monate allen Zweigen der heimischen Sozialversicherung unterliegen, sofern sie gewöhnlich in der Heimat tätig sind.

Sofern der Mitarbeiter im Zielland einer wirtschaftlichen Tätigkeit nachgeht, kann in dem Staat eine so genannte Betriebsstätte entstehen. Dann entfällt die 183-Tage-Regelung, und die Lohnsteuern sind ab Tag eins im Tätigkeitsland zu entrichten. Außerdem muss jährlich ein Jahresbericht mit Bilanz und Gewinn- und Verlustrechnung beim Steueramt des Landes eingereicht werden.

In Deutschland greift neben den allgemeinen Arbeitsbedingungen der Mindestlohn von 8,50 Euro brutto pro Stunde.

If a worker spends 183 or more days of the year deployed in the host country, income tax must be declared and paid in this country in accordance with the double taxation agreements. This means that the employer must register their employee in both the tax and employment registers of the country and deduct income tax every month. The eurozone means that there is no need to worry about work permits or currencies. However, for stays above a certain length, usually three months, the employee must register with the migration authorities.

If an employee was already working in their home country, they can remain in the system there for social security purposes. According to EC Regulation 883/04, workers from EU member states who are posted within the European Union may continue to be subject to all parts of the social security provisions of their home country for 24 months, as long as they are usually employed in their home country.

If the employee engages in an economic activity in the destination country, what is known as a permanent establishment may arise. In this situation, the 183 day rule does not apply and income tax must be paid in the host country from day one. An annual report with a balance sheet and profit and loss statement must also be filed with the country’s tax office every year.

In addition to its general working conditions, Germany also has a minimum wage of EUR 8.50 gross per hour.

Privatkonsum als Wachstumstreiber in den drei baltischen Staaten

Steigende Löhne treiben Einzelhandel Die ausgeprägte Kauflaune dominiert das Wirtschaftswachstum in Estland, Lettland und Litauen in diesem Jahr. Die starken Lohnzuwächse fließen in den Einzelhandel, der in allen drei baltischen Staaten seit einigen Jahren ordentlich wächst. Estlands Verdienste liegen deutlich über dem baltischen Schnitt, in Lettland ist das Online-Shopping besonders populär. Alle Augen sind im Moment allerdings auf Litauen gerichtet, wo mit Spannung der Markteintritt von Lidl erwartet wird. / Marc Lehnfeld Die baltischen Staaten setzen ihren Wachstumskurs fort. Die EU-Kommission erwartet in ihrer Prognose vom Februar, dass die Wirtschaftsleistung in Estland, Lettland und Litauen in diesem Jahr stärker wachsen wird als die der EU (im Schnitt um 1,9%). Dabei sollen Lettland (+3,1%) und Litauen (+2,9%) noch deutlich stärker wachsen, als Estland mit 2,1%. Grund dafür ist der hohe Privatkonsum, der das Wirtschaftswachstum trotz der schwachen Bruttoanlageinvestitionen treibt.

So sollen in Litauen die privaten Konsumausgaben mit 4,9% am stärksten von allen drei baltischen Staaten steigen, gefolgt von Lettland (+3,8%) und Estland (+3,2%). Es sind vor allem die deutlichen Lohnsteigerungen, die die Kauflaune der Bevölkerung befeuern. So sind zum Beispiel die Löhne in Estland zwischen 2011 und 2015 jah-

resdurchschnittlich um nominal 6,1% gestiegen.

Folglich lohnt ein näherer Blick auf die kleinen, aber dynamisch wachsenden baltischen Konsumgütermärkte.

Deutsche Unternehmen sollten beim Markteintritt in die drei Staaten beachten, dass die Preisniveaus deutlich niedriger sind als in Deutschland.

Nach Angaben von Eurostat für 2014 liegen die Preise für Endverbraucher in Estland und Lettland etwa 24,4% und 29,9% unter dem EU-Schnitt. Litauen bietet gar das fünftniedrigste Niveau in der EU. Dort liegen die Preise etwa 37,2% unter dem EU-Schnitt. Generell gilt allerdings für Estland, Lettland und Litauen ein starkes Preisgefälle zwischen Stadt und Land. In den drei Hauptstädten liegen die Preise durchaus auf westeuropäischem Niveau.

Lidls Markteintritt in Litauen steht kurz bevor Litauen ist mit etwa 2,9 Mio. Einwohnern das größte baltische Land. Anders als in Estland und Lettland, konzentrieren sich Bevölkerung und wirtschaftliche Aktivität nicht nur auf die Hauptstadtregion. In Litauens vier größten Städten Vilnius (532.500 Einwohner), Kaunas (297.700), Klaipėda (154.300) und Šiauliai (103.000) leben nur etwa 37,5% der Gesamtbevölkerung. Litauer verdienten 2015 mit 712 Euro den niedrigsten durchschnittlichen Bruttomonatslohn in den baltischen Staaten. Dieser ist allerdings seit 2011 jahresdurchschnittlich um 4,7% gestiegen, wie aus den Zahlen des litauischen Statistikamts hervorgeht.

Durch die starken Lohnerhöhungen wuchs der Einzelhandelsabsatz (ohne Kfz-Handel und Kraftstoffe) auch 2015 gegenüber dem Vorjahr um 4,4%. In Litauen setzten die Einzelhändler (ohne KfzHandel und Kraftstoffe) 2015 etwa 7,3 Mrd. Euro ab. Der Lebensmitteleinzelhandel machte im selben Jahr etwa 54% des gesamten Branchenumsatzes aus und wuchs gegenüber 2014 um 3,0% auf fast 4 Mrd. Euro. Dominiert wird die Sparte von der Maxima Gruppe mit einem Umsatz von über 1,4 Mrd. Euro (2015) und einem Marktanteil von 38%.

Der litauische Konzern verfügt nicht nur über 233 Filialen in Litauen, sondern ist mit über 148 Läden in Lettland und 75 Geschäften in Estland der größte Händler im Baltikum. Mit Spannung wird daher der Verkaufsstart von Lidl in Litauen erwartet. Im April 2016 wird der deutsche Discounter sein 29 Mio. Euro teures Logistikzentrum in der Nähe von Kaunas eröffnen. Noch unklar ist, wann genau die zehn Lidl-Filialen im Land eröffnen werden.

Der Baltic News Service schätzt, dass rund 20 weitere Geschäfte dazu kommen könnten. Ebenfalls könnte Lidl seine Expansion nach Lettland und Estland fortsetzen. Zu erwarten ist ein Preiskampf unter den größten Anbietern. Neben Maxima sind auch IKI (Marktanteil 15%, 235 Geschäfte), Norfa (13%, etwa 136 Geschäfte) und Rimi (6%, 52 Geschäfte) in Litauen aktiv.

Maxima investiert in Estlands Einzelhandel Die Esten verdienen mit durchschnittlich 1.065 Euro das höchste Bruttomonatsgehalt vor Lettland und Litauen. Euro in 2015. Immer attraktiver wird der OnlineHandel. Zwar wurden 2015 erst 2,9% der Umsätze über das Internet verdient, die Verkäufe steigen aber seit 2011 zweistellig, am stärksten um etwa 39,8% im Jahr 2015 gegenüber dem Vorjahr.

Wie in Litauen ist Maxima auch in Estland ein großer Anbieter mit 75 Filialen und knapp 4.200 Beschäftigten im Land. Im Jahr 2015 setzten sie laut Konzernangaben etwa 440,8 Mio. Euro ab. Damit wächst das Unternehmen um 9,7% gegenüber dem Vorjahr deutlich stärker als der Branchenschnitt und so stark wie in keinem anderen baltischen Land. Der Einzelhändler plant weiter zu wachsen. Im Februar 2016 eröffnete Maxima ein 35 Mio. Euro teures Logistikzentrum mit einer Gesamtfläche von 45.000 qm.

Online-Shopping in Lettland immer beliebter Der durchschnittliche Bruttomonatsverdienst in Lettland liegt mit 818 Euro etwa 15% über dem litauischen und 23% unter dem estnischen Niveau.

Wie auch in Estland und Litauen, sind in Lettland die Löhne stark gestiegen. Die Daten des lettischen Statistikamts zeigen ein jahresdurchschnittliches Wachstum von 5,5% zwischen 2011 und 2015. Davon profitierte vor allem der Einzelhandel, dessen Umsätze (ohne Kfz-Handel und Kraftstoffe) im selben Zeitraum pro Jahr im Schnitt um 5,0% stiegen, zuletzt 2015 um 4,3% gegenüber dem Vorjahr auf knapp 5,5 Mrd. Euro.

Die lettischen Konsumenten kauften besonders gern Unterhaltungselektronik. Der Absatz von Audio- und Videoausrüstung stieg 2015 gegenüber dem Vorjahr um 20,1% auf 13,6 Mio. Euro. Unterdurchschnittlich stieg der Umsatz im Lebensmitteleinzelhandel um 2,4% auf über 2,7 Mrd. Euro (2015 gegenüber 2014). Kein anderes Segment wuchs 2015 mit einem Zuwachs gegenüber dem Vorjahr von 35% so stark wie der Onlinehandel.

Mit einem Anteil am Gesamtumsatz der Branche von 3% wird nirgendwo in den baltischen Staaten so gern im Internet eingekauft wie in Lettland. Seit 2011 wächst der Umsatz im Jahresschnitt um 23,5%. So wurden 2015 etwas mehr als 163 Mio. Euro online abgesetzt.

Private consumption drives economic growth in the three Baltic States

Rising wages boost retail A pronounced trend towards spending is dominating economic growth in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania this year.

A sharp increase in wages is feeding into retail, which has been growing considerably in the three Baltic States over the last few years. Estonia’s earnings are well above average for the Baltics and online shopping is particularly popular in Latvia. All eyes are currently on Lithuania, however, which is eagerly awaiting Lidl’s market launch. / Marc Lehnfeld The Baltic States are continuing their growth trajectory. The European Commission’s February forecast anticipates economic output in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to grow at a faster rate than that of the EU this year (by an average of 1.9%), with Latvia (+3.1%) and Lithuania (+2.9%) showing even stronger growth than Estonia with 2.1%. The reason behind this is a high level of private consumption that is driving economic growth despite weak gross capital investment.

For instance, private consumer spending in Lithuania is set to rise the most of all three Baltic States at 4.9%, followed by Latvia (+3.8%) and Estonia (+3.2%). It is primarily the significant increase in wages that is fuelling consumers’ increased spending. For example, wages in Estonia rose by a nominal

annual average of 6.1% between 2011 and 2015. As a result, it is worthwhile to take a closer look at the small yet rapidly expanding consumer goods markets in the three Baltic States.

When entering Baltic markets, German companies should be aware that the level of prices is much lower than in Germany. According to Eurostat data for 2014, prices for Estonian and Latvian consumers were around 24.4% and 29.9% below the EU average, while Lithuania actually has the fifth lowest level in the EU, with prices around 37.2% below the EU average. There is a general price differential, however, between urban and rural areas in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Prices in the capitals are very much on a par with those of Western Europe.

Countdown to Lidl’s market launch in Lithuania

With a population of 2.9 million, Lithuania is the largest Baltic country. Unlike Estonia and Latvia, the population and economic activity are not just centred around the capital city. Only around 37.5% of the total population live in Lithuania’s four largest cities of Vilnius (population 532,500), Kaunas (297,700), Klaipeda (154,300) and Siauliai (103,000).

At EUR 712 gross per month, Lithuanians earned the lowest average wage in the Baltic States in 2015, although this has risen by an annual average of 4.7% since 2011, as figures from Statistics Lithuania show.

Thanks to the sharp increase in wages, retail sales (excluding the automotive trade and fuel) were also up by 4.4% in 2015 compared with the previous year.

Lithuanian retailers (excluding the automotive trade and fuel) made sales of around EUR 7.3 billion in 2015. Food retail made up around 54% of total sales for the sector in the same year and grew by 3.0% compared with the previous year to almost EUR 4 billion. The sector is dominated by the Maxima Group with sales of over EUR 1.4 billion (2015) and a market share of 38%.

The Lithuanian group not only has 233 branches in Lithuania, but is also the biggest retailer in the Baltics with over 148 stores in Latvia and 75 in Estonia. Lidl’s sales launch in Lithuania is therefore eagerly anticipated. The German discount supermarket will be opening its logistics centre near Kaunas in April 2016 at a cost of EUR 29 million. It is still unclear when exactly Lithuania’s ten Lidl branches will open.

The Baltic News Service estimates that a further 20 or so stores will follow. It is possible that Lidl could also continue to expand into Latvia and Estonia. The biggest providers are expected to compete fiercely on prices. Alongside Maxima, IKI (market share 15%, 235 stores), Norfa (13%, around 136 stores) and Rimi (6%, 52 stores) also operate in Lithuania.

Maxima invests in Estonian retail Estonians earn the highest gross monthly salary with an average of EUR 1,065 ahead of Latvia and Lithuania. The increase in wages drove consumers’ increased spending. Over the same period, retail sales (excluding the automotive trade and fuel) grew by an average of 8.2% per year to over EUR 4.5 billion in 2015. This makes Estonia’s retail market the smallest in the three Baltic States.

The sector had already compensated for the losses sustained during the financial and economic crisis by 2012. Sales dropped by around 14.9% in 2009 but have been growing sharply ever since, rising most recently by 8.7% compared with the previous year to over EUR 4.5 billion in 2015. Online trade is increasing in appeal. Although only 2.9% of sales were generated over the internet in 2015, figures have

seen double-digit growth since 2011, up by a high of 39.8% in 2015 compared with the previous year.

Just as in Lithuania, Maxima is a large provider in Estonia with 75 branches and almost 4,200 employees across the country. According to the group’s figures, it recorded sales of around EUR 440.8 million in 2015, growing by 9.7% compared to the previous year - much more sharply than the sector average and more so than in any other Baltic country. The retailer intends to continue growing. In February 2016, Maxima opened a logistics centre with a total area of 45,000 m2 and costing EUR 35 million.

Online shopping increasingly popular in Latvia At EUR 818, average gross monthly earnings in Latvia are around 15% above Lithuania’s but 23% below Estonia’s. As in Estonia and Lithuania, salaries in Latvia have risen sharply. Data from the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia show an annual average growth of 5.5% between 2011 and 2015. This benefited the retail sector most of all, whose sales (excluding the automotive trade and fuel) rose by an average of 5.0% per year over the same period, rising most recently in 2015 by 4.3% compared with the previous year to almost EUR 5.5 billion.

Shoppers in Latvia most frequently bought consumer electronics. In 2015, sales of audio and video equipment rose by 20.1% compared with the previous year to EUR 13.6 million. Sales in the food retail sector saw a below-average year-on-year growth of 2.4% to over EUR 2.7 billion in 2015. With growth of 35% compared with the previous year, no other segment grew as sharply in 2015 as online trade.

With a 3% share in the sector’s total sales, nowhere in the Baltic States likes online shopping as much as Latvia, where sales have increased by an annual average of 23.5% since 2011 and an excess of EUR 163 million was generated in online sales in 2015.

IAA Commercial Vehicles: Driven by Ideas The automotive world meets at the IAA Commercial Vehicles from 22 to 29 September. It is the world’s leading trade fair for mobility, transportation and logistics. InnoTrans: The Future of Mobility The eleventh InnoTrans will take place from 20 to 23 September 2016. InnoTrans is the leading international trade fair for transport technology and takes places every two years in Berlin. The international trade fair will provide a comprehensive overview of the current status and future prospects of the sector. As the global leader in its sector, WindEnergy Hamburg is the international meeting point and is held in even-numbered years, while HUSUM Wind is the meeting point for the German-speaking wind energy market and is held in odd-numbered years. WindEnergy Hamburg is much more than just a trade fair. It covers the whole value chain of wind energy, and provides a special focus for expertise in its section on storage technologies. It also has an extensive supporting programme and lots of added value, such as synergy with SMM, the leading international maritime industry fair, which is held at the Hamburg Messe site shortly before WindEnergy Hamburg. AHK publishes economic profile of the Baltic States

Alles, was Unternehmer über die Standorte Estland, Lettland und Litauen wissen müssen, finden sie im neuen „Wirtschaftsprofil Baltische Staaten“, das die Deutsch-Baltische Handelskammer im April 2016 erstmals veröffentlicht hat. Die 32seitige Publikation fasst die wichtigsten ökonomischen Entwicklungen und Trends, die aktuellen Außenhandelszahlen und Wachstumsbranchen zusammen und kann kostenlos auf der Website der AHK heruntergeladen oder als Druckversion bestellt werden.

April 2016 saw the very first edition of the “Baltic States economic profile”, which is published by the German-Baltic Chamber of Commerce (AHK) and contains everything that entrepreneurs need to know about Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania as places for business. The 32-page publication, which summarises key economic developments and trends, the latest foreign trade statistics and growth industries, can be downloaded for free from the AHK website or ordered as a print version.

Das Handelsvolumen zwischen Deutschland und den drei baltischen Ländern ist 2015 auf mehr als 8,8 Mrd. Euro gewachsen. Auf vielen Gebieten haben sich Estland, Lettland und Litauen als attraktive Standorte auch für deutsche Investoren etabliert. Das AHK-Wirtschaftsprofil erläutert wichtige Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede der Wirtschaftsstrukturen und Geschäftskultur. Zudem zeigt es Chancen für deutsche Produzenten und Dienstleister auf. So werden Infrastrukturprojekte wie das mit 5,2 Milliarden Euro dotierte Schienenbau-Vorhaben Rail Baltica ebenso erläutert wie der Ausbau schneller Internetverbindungen. „Für die baltischen Staaten spricht nicht nur ihre innovative Grundhaltung“, so AHK-Geschäftsführer Florian Schröder: „Die relativ kleinen Staaten eignen sich auch hervorragend als Testmärkte für neue Produkte und Dienstleistungen.“

The volume of trade conducted between Germany and the three Baltic States increased to more than EUR 8.8 billion in 2015. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have also established themselves as attractive locations for German investors from a range of industries.

The AHK economic profile explains the major similarities and differences between the economic structures and business cultures in the respective countries. It also highlights opportunities for German manufacturers and service providers. For example, it looks at infrastructure projects such as the Rail Baltica railway link, which has secured EUR 5.2 billion of funding, and the construction of high-speed Internet connections. “The Baltic States have an innovative approach to business,” says AHK CEO Florian Schröder. “But that’s not all: these relatively small countries are also the perfect test markets for new products and services.”

Hinzu kommen laut AHK attraktive Steuermodelle, vergleichsweise niedrige Lohnkosten sowie politische und wirtschaftliche Stabilität. Alle drei baltischen Staaten gehören innerhalb der EU seit Jahren zu den wachstumsstärksten Nationen und bekommen im Vergleich zu anderen osteuropäischen Märkten Top-Bewertungen, so die Handelskammer. Das Wirtschaftsprofil informiert folglich auch zu Fördermitteln, rechtlichen Fragen der Gesellschaftsgründung sowie der Einstellung von Personal. Hinweise gibt es ebenso für deutsche Unternehmen, die eigene Mitarbeiter zeitweise nach Estland, Lettland oder Litauen entsenden wollen.

Ein Business-Knigge sowie eine Übersicht wichtiger Adressen runden die Publikation ab.

As the AHK points out, attractive tax models are also at play, as well as comparatively low labour costs and a stable political and economic climate. The AHK also notes that the three Baltic States have been among the fastest-growing nations in the EU for several years and are rated highly in comparison to other Eastern European markets. With this in mind, the economic profile also provides information on subsidies, legal issues relating to company formation and hiring staff. It also contains tips for German companies that want to post their employees in Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania temporarily. Some handy pointers on business etiquette and a list of important addresses round out the publication.
