HISTORY OF MENAHGA

The name “Menahga” was derived from the Ojibwe word for “there are [many] blueberries. The wild fruit grew in abundance throughout the area and Native Americans and pioneers alike used to sell and trade blueberries through local merchants in the early days of the town. The area of Menahga was settled by immigrants of Scandinavian and European descent, as well as many Finnlanders, as land was cleared by loggers. Menahga is part of the Louisiana Purchase bought in 1803 from Napoleon. In 1849, Minnesota was organized as a territory and became a state in 1858. Very little is recorded of this area from the early 1800’s, but it is known that the Sioux and Ojibwe (Chippewa) tribes used it for hunting grounds.

These tribes were semi-nomadic and followed the seasonal development of food sources. They traveled from sugar camps to fishing, to garden villages, and to hunting. Their diet consisted mainly of meat derived from white-tailed deer and fish. Wild rice was harvested from the marshy shores of area lakes and the abundance of blueberries in those early days became their main fruit item.

The Homestead Act of 1862 brought many people to the Menahga area, via railroad and the Crow Wing River. Menahga’s town site was established in 1891 by E. Jones and that same year along came the railroad. In the spring of 1892, a Petition of Incorporation was begun. Most of the settlers from 1875-1880

were of “Yankee” heritage, that is, born and raised in America. Immigrants began to arrive in Blueberry Township in 1880-1890. By 1895, Menahga boasted a population of 288 and of its 144 adults, all but four were born in Finland. According to recorded information, the first Finnish settler to arrive in the area was Jacob Lalli.

In those early days, Menahga was covered by a thick growth of virgin white and red pine trees, thus the name, “Gateway to the Pines.”

Even before the immigrants arrived, the logging industry had changed the face of the land. Huge logs were floated to the sawmills via the Crow Wing River and its tributaries which provided hundreds of miles of waterways to that industry.

The 1895 census indicated not only logging as the job market for the area, but included cattle and grain buyers, merchants, hotel keepers, mill hands, blacksmiths, skilled ar tisans, laborers and those who set up their own trade, all a part of this hustling, busy town. Interestingly, 90% of Blueberry Township settlers listed their occupation as farming. Today, the city of Menahga is surrounded by Blueberry Township, Wadena County, and provides home for a closely knit community of 1,306 residents. The business community boasts over 200 and actively pursues business retention and expansion through community groups and economic development.

The legend of St. Urho says he chased the grasshoppers out of ancient Finland, thus saving the grape crop and the jobs of Finnish vineyard workers. He did this by uttering the phrase: “Heinasirkka, heinasirkka, mene taalta hiiteen.” His feast is celebrated by the American Finlanders by wearing the colors Royal Purple and Nile Green on the day BEFORE St. Patrick’s Day. St. Urho is nearly always represented with grapes and grasshoppers.

The Menahga Public Schools consists of three schools under one roof. The building is a Pre K-12 facility with classrooms, labs, gymnasiums, and other study areas. The schools are connected and many of our older students work as teacher’s assistants and help the younger students creating a beneficial learning environment for all.

MENAHGA AREA TRAILS

Menahga is strategically located in the midst of trails, which can be enjoyed by young and old alike. Menahga has access to horseback riding trails, trails for hiking and biking, and snowmobiling.

RIDING IN HUNTERSVILLE

MENAHGA WALKING TRAILS

A simple walking path goes from the beach to the fishing pier. Paths also go through the woods from the Memorial Park Campground.

CROW WING RIVER TRAILS

There is a walking path along the banks of the river for a nature lover’s enjoyment east of Menahga.

HEARTLAND TRAIL

For biking and hiking, the multi-use paved Heartland Trail can be accessed just north of Menahga in Park Rapids. It is a 49 mile trial that runs between Park Rapids and Cass Lake. It is located entirely on a level, abandoned railroad grade, except for 4 miles north of Walker. The paved trail between Park Rapids and Walker is 27 miles; the paved trail between Walker and Cass Lake is 22 miles. A second grassy trail between Park Rapids and Walker is perfect for horseback riding and mountain biking. The Heartland Trail connects with the Paul Bunyan State Trail system and other regional trails. You will need a horse pass for horsebacking riding, a ski pass for cross country skiing, and a snowmobile registration and state trail sticker for snowmobiling.

SNOWMOBILE TRAILS

Trails are open to snowmobilers from December 1 to April 1 depending on conditions. The 200 mile trail system hooks up with every trail system in Minnesota. This means you could take a snowmobile trip and visit most anywhere in the state and even ride into neighboring states. This is part of the fairly new “State Corridor System” that runs much like the highway system. Pick up maps at local businesses or download from trailbreakers.org

MENAHGA MEMORIAL FOREST PARK & CAMPGROUND

The City of Menahga has a 40-acre Memorial Park located just south of town off Highway 71. The park is filled with stately pines, beautiful birch and hardwood trees. The park offers camping facilities, most of which have water and electrical hookups. There are two sheltered pavilions and other picnic facilities, a playground, bathrooms and an RV dump station available for a fee.

Each shaded campsite includes a fire ring (for roasting marshmallows and frying your catch of the day) and a picnic table. Our modern shower house provides flush toilets and hot showers.

Children can spend the day frolicking on the playground equipment, or the sandy swimming beach at Spirit Lake is just a short 1/4 mile away. Spirit Lake also offers a large T-shaped fishing pier for the public to use. A public access for boats is also nearby. Venture into Menahga to visit our friendly merchants.

Opening in 2022 is the new 12-hole disc golf course winding throughout the park. Grab a few friends and check it out!

State Forestry Maintained. This 60 acre campsite once boasted a flourishing button factory. Buttons were fashioned from the shells of fresh water clams dug from the Shell River. Bring your own tent. A total 19 sites consisting of no-frills sites and rustic sites. Each site has a cleared area, fire ring, and table. Vault toilets, garbage cans, and drinking water are available. First-come, firstserved. Check-in 3 pm, check-out 11 am. Campground sits along 24 miles of horse trails. Swimming area in Shell River. $14/day, paid on site. Managed by: Itasca State Park.
