WHERE THE PRAIRIE MEETS THE WOODLANDS

O

n behalf of the citizens of Wadena, I would like to welcome you to “Our Town”. Maybe you are passing through, here for a visit or considering a move. Whatever reason it may be, take some time to see all we have to offer. Small town living with some big city amenities. We have great medical professionals here in Wadena. The Tri-County Hospital, Clinic and staff do an outstanding job. Local dentists, optometrists and chiropractors round out a top notch group of health care providers. A first class education is available from WDC K-12 Schools, M-State College, Freshwater Education and Son Rise Christian School. Our municipal airport has a 4000' paved runway and plans to add a crosswind runway.

There are a large variety of churches offering many religious choices. A good mix of retail, industrial, governmental, education and medical jobs provide a nice choice of employment opportunities here. Stop on in and take a stroll up and down our Historic Main Street. You will see a collection of neat and unique stores, restaurants, the new brewery and a super cool theater. Make sure you check out the “MAS”, you will be amazed what this wellness center has to offer. Swing into our beautiful Whitetail Run 18 hole public golf course and shoot a round or two. Wadena has hundreds of acres of city park land for your enjoyment. Check out the Historic Wadena Depot along with the Wadena County Museum. During the summer take in the June Jubilee, Wadena

County Fair and the Old Wadena Rendezvous. Wintertime offers cross country skiing, hiking and mountain biking at Blacks Grove Park and there are many miles of groomed snowmobile trails in the area. There is plenty of gas, food and lodging to go around.

What to See and Do Old Wadena Rendezvous and Folklife Festival and the new “Chautauqua 2019 marks the 29th annual Old Wadena Rendezvous and Folklife Festival, a celebration through storytelling, theater, music, dance and art of the region’s past and of its rich cultural inheritance. The festival is held on the grounds of the beautiful Old Wadena County Historical Park on the banks of the Crow Wing River. This year’s Festival will be Saturday and Sunday, August 10 and 11. Gates open both days at 10 AM and admission is $10 for both days of the festival. Kids 12 and under admitted free if accompanied by an adult. Family groups of any size are admitted with one low $25 entrance fee. Have you ever wanted to really practice the traditional arts that are demonstrated every year at the festival? Last year the “Chautauqua was introduced to allow everyone the opportunity to experience the traditional arts hands-on. Using two large tents as well as the newly completed gazebo anyone can try their hand at a traditional art form. This year that will include Ojibwe flute, song writing and ukulele taught by Curtis and Loretta, pit-fired pottery, barn quilt painting, storytelling, blacksmithing, and birch bark canoe construction. Details about these classes will be available on the Old Wadena website beginning May 1, 2019.

Curtis and Loretta As always there will be a fur traders village complete with blacksmith shop and of course the justly famous “Baby’s Fry Bread tent with the world’s best fry bread featuring bannock, chicken cordon bleu, or fruit fillings. Or you can order a plain fry bread or one with a dash of cinnamon sugar. Local naturalist Dick Oehlenschlager will provide interpretive talks about the flora and fauna of the region as well as

guided tours along the park’s “bog walk interpretive trail. You can practice throwing a tomahawk or shooting a BB gun, or build a bluebird house. Artisans will demonstrate a host of fascinating crafts, including pottery making, woodworking and wood carving, lace making, dried flower arranging, leather work, blacksmithing, painting and basket making. All the details are at www. oldwadenarendezvous.org.

2019 W hiskey Creek Film Festival The Whiskey Creek Film Festival screens films selected from the best current cinema in the nation from Friday, September 13 – Thursday, September 19, 2019 at Wadena’s Cozy Theatre. The Festival will show seven award-winning films in current release. One of these will be screened at no cost to families. This year the “Made in Minnesota category for the Festival will solicit short films (no longer than three minutes) that help to tell the story of Wadena and the region. There will be no fee to enter, and all films must be submitted as a DVD. Details about this exciting new part of the Festival are available on our web page, www.whiskeycreekfilmfestival.org. Whiskey Creek has become a must-attend art event every fall in Wadena, and this year marks the Festival’s 15th annual celebration of film art. Sponsors of the Festival include the 5 Wings Arts Council, the Wadena Convention and Visitors Bureau, and many businesses in the region. Festival passes are available beginning April 1, and can be purchased at the Cozy Theatre, Oma’s Bread in Wadena, the Cultural Center in New York Mills, and Beagle and Wolf Books in Park Rapids. Tickets are also available online by following the link on the Festival website. The link for ticket sales for this year’s Festival will be active beginning August 1, 2019. Tickets for single movie screenings are available only at the Cozy box office.

Wadena Restaurants will feature Festival specials during the week. Just as they did last year, Oma’s Bread will serve their wonderful quiches and kuchen on the Pemberton Law Office lawn across from the Cozy under the Festival hospitality tent. Read about last year’s Festival on the website. Details about 2019 will be posted June 1, 2019. Ask any questions about the Festival by writing to info@ whiskeycreekfilmfestival.org.

Celebrating the Arts Wadena Memorial Auditorium Built in 1934, the Wadena Memorial Auditorium is a cultural and historic landmark that provides countless hours of community and regional enjoyment. The auditorium has been restored in the beautiful art-deco style of the 1930s. As the community and school’s center for the performing arts, it is one of Wadena’s most appreciated assets. Wadena-Deer Creek High School’s Drama Department’s Fall play and One-Act play rehearse and perform at the Auditorium. Their performances have received “superior” ratings at the State OneAct Festival six times, as well as 11 appearances at State. The community theater group, Wadena Area Madhatters, also perform in the auditorium. In addition, they offer a summer theater camp for area youth. Other groups who frequently use the auditorium include the Wadena Area Concert Association Series of concerts, Prairie Fire Theatre, Miss Wadena Scholarship Pageant and many others. Beginning the summer of 2018, the Auditorium, along with adjoining WDC Elementary, began a $14.75 million remodel, which will be completed in two phases over the next two years. To book an event, contact Mary Fix at the Wadena-Deer Creek High School office at (218) 632-2381.

Wadena Area Concert Association Since the early 50s the Wadena Area Concert Association has been supplying fine entertainment opportunities for Wadena and the surrounding communities. Each year a series contains a variety of musical offerings, including both vocal and instrumental soloists and small groups presenting programs of jazz, popular and classical music. All concerts are held in the renovated Memorial Auditorium. Most are held in the evening beginning at 7:30 PM with an occasional Sunday matinee. Admission to the concerts is by seasonal membership which admits the purchaser to Wadena concerts and also concerts in Alexandria, Fergus Falls, Park Rapids and Sauk Centre. The membership drive is held in the fall of each year. Newcomers to the community are welcome to purchase tickets mid-season. For more information, call Bonnie Kingsley at (218) 371-9487.

Wadena Area Madhatters Community Theatre Wadena Area Madhatters, Inc. is a community theatre group combining the talents of many people from Wadena and the surrounding area. The theatre group holds their performances in the Wadena Memorial Auditorium, and various other venues in the area. They offer everything from full-cast musicals and dramas to acting workshops and a summer youth acting camp, dinner theaters and ‘Mad Lab’ productions. The lab shows offer complex social issue, educational, and experimental theatre plays. Madhatters has performed many big-name plays such as “Guys and Dolls,” “Annie,” “The Sound of Music,” “Wizard of Oz,” “On Golden Pond,” and “Nunsense.” Our latest dinner theatre was “The Kitchen Witches.” Mad Lab has produced “girl,” “The Rabbit Hole,” “A Walk in the Woods,” “Whales of August,” and in conjunction with our neighboring theatre group, “True West” and “Twelve Angry Men.”

“Believe” cast www.madhattersinc.org or on Facebook – Wadena Madhatters Community Theater. Watch for “The Haunting of Hill House,” among others.

Summer drama camp will be held July 22 – August 2, 2019. The free performance showcasing the campers’ work will be held August 2 at 7:00 PM at W-DC High School due to ongoing renovations at the Memorial Auditorium. Robin Jensen will direct this year’s camp, with a theme of ‘You’ve Got a Friend.’ Tuition is $100 for the two-week camp and sponsorships are available. Contact Deb Fitzsimmons at dfitzsimmons@charter.net for more information. The Showcase is open to the public. WADENA DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY The Wadena Development Authority (WDA) is the economic and community development arm of the City of Wadena. Formed in 1984, the WDA is celebrating over 35 years of â€?Creating Conditions for Doing Business.â€?

and Economic Development (DEED), and Small Business Development Center (SBDC), giving the community access to other services and loan funds.

The City of Wadena has a strong base of infrastructure to support business development in the community, including comparatively low municipal water and electricity rates, with plenty of excess capacity to meet your business needs. With two providers offering high speed data access, a strong local community and technical college, a growing state-ofthe-art health care facility, and excellent recreational facilities, the support services for progressive businesses are in place.

From humble beginnings and the generosity of local business owners, trying to raise a few dollars to create a small loan fund of around $20,000, the WDA now manages a loan fund with assets exceeding a million dollars as well as managing over 70 acres of land dedicated for development. We have cultivated a relationship with the Small Business Development Center, to provide a high level of business planning

Wadena continues a long relationship working with DEED to provide the best tools to grow your business. Providing tax breaks for new and expanding businesses, TIF and tax abatement, DEED loan and redevelopment programs are

available through the WDA. As you can see, the Wadena community has a great deal to offer. The WDA has partnered with WadenaDeer Creek, Staples-Motley, Verndale, and Pillager school districts to pilot the Central Minnesota chapter of CEO (Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities). This program fosters a spirit of enterprise and entrepreneurship in local high school students interested in starting a new business locally. The Wadena Development Authority has been “Creating Conditions for Doing Business for 30 plus years, and conditions have never been better. Partners for a Healthy Wadena Region

What do the decorative art deco street lights that grace Wadena’s main street, and the restored Depot in Burlington Northern Park share in common? They are both projects that Partners for a Healthy Wadena Region spearheaded. The street light project is complete, and Depot in Wadena continues to be the cornerstone for Partners’ activity in the community. During open hours the Depot is open to the public with its display of railroad memorabilia and historic photographs of the railroad history of Wadena. Find out about all the events that are happening in Wadena by stopping at the Depot. Through collaboration with the Wadena County Historical Society the Depot hosts historical

exhibits organized by the Historical Society. Information about these exhibits is available at the Historical Society’s website and on the Partners website: thedepotwadena.org. The popularity of the Depot for business meetings, graduation parties, birthday parties, conferences, wedding receptions, and weddings grows each year. To inquire about rentals please call (218) 849-6087 or visit the Partners website: thedepotwadena.org. The restored Depot is a jewel of prairie vernacular architecture of which Wadena is justly proud. Partners hopes to restore more than the building itself by making the Depot a vibrant part of

community life, providing a space where everyone can share Wadena’s past as well as learn about our city’s present and future. Visit the Partners Depot website: thedepotwadena.org, and stop in at one of the exhibits or events such as our “wine and chocolate” fundraiser. Partners is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit corporation and its offices are located in the Depot. Inquiries about the Depot and Partners may be directed to thedepotwadena@ gmail.com.

Health ALL HEART IN ACTION AT TRI-COUNTY HEALTH CARE

Larry and Jo Anne Flom Jo Anne Flom of Baxter has experienced her fair share of medical emergencies. But through each one, she has been grateful that Tri-County Health Care has been close by her side. While they were living in Henning in 2007,

her husband, Larry, began having an irregular heartbeat. Jo Anne convinced him to go to the emergency room at Tri-County. He did so reluctantly. “He walked in and said, ‘I don’t know why I’m here. She made me come,’ Jo Anne said. “As she walked to him, she said, ‘I know why you’re here. It’s your heart.’ She knew right away. That night, Larry suffered a massive stroke. Jo Anne rushed to his side as he was brought to the helicopter to be flown to Minneapolis. “I grabbed his hand and said, ‘Honey, I’ll be there as soon as I can,’ Jo Anne said. He shed a single tear, which the doctors said was his first physical response since

the stroke, according to Jo Anne. After Larry spent 31 days in the hospital, Jo Anne had him transported back to TriCounty Health Care. “He 1,000 percent recovered, she said. “They taught me all sorts of things. It wasn’t, ‘Go sit in the corner.’ It was teaching me so I knew what I’m supposed to do at home. It was miracle after miracle, and I don’t think Wadena has changed at all. Indeed, Jo Anne’s recent experience with Tri-County Health Care was just as positive. She has endured pain in her knee for quite some time, but Ben Robertson, M.D., knew exactly how to help. “I couldn’t even drive that day, I was hurting so bad, Jo Anne said of her recent trip to Tri-County. “Tears were coming, but the ladies were as careful as they could possibly be to be pain free to get the X-ray done. Then she sat down with Robertson to discuss her options. “God gives us good doctors, and we have to use our head and do what they suggest, she said. “I’ve thanked the Lord many, many times for Dr. Robertson. He didn’t say surgery. He gave me a choice. Then he showed me how to exercise it. He showed me all of that and didn’t charge me any extra. That’s honesty. It’s caring for the patient. “I was extremely impressed when I came down to Wadena that day. The minute you come in that door, the attitude is friendly and sweet. I was extremely pleased at how I was treated by everybody. It was ‘may I help you to the elevator,’ ‘may I take your coat.’ That is very, very important. all heart

Caring for you isn’t just our purpose. It’s our privilege.

What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “All Heart”? Perhaps you feel warm and safe. Or comfortable and at ease. Maybe it gives you a sense of belonging and genuine connection with those who care for you. That’s what Tri-County Health Care is dedicated to giving you. Whether you’re seeking primary care, an X-ray, labs or other services at our clinics, All Heart will be at the center of your care. It’s hearing a cheerful hello after you’ve had a rough morning. It’s leaving an appointment feeling confident and understood. It’s the nurse who makes the clinic visit not so scary for your little one. It’s the provider who, even at the end of the day, treats you as though you’re the very first patient. Get the health care you deserve at Tri-County Health Care, just like Marlos Fisher, who values her care at the Wadena clinic.
