What to See and Do Old Wadena Rendezvous and Folklife Festival and the new “Chautauqua 2018 marks the 28th annual Old Wadena Rendezvous and Folklife Festival, a celebration through storytelling, theater, music, dance, and art of the region’s past and of its rich cultural inheritance. The Festival is held on the grounds of the beautiful Old Wadena County Historical Park on the banks of the Crow Wing River.

local businesses the Old Wadena Society will provide anyone who wishes to learn the opportunity to practice one of the arts showcased each year at the Rendezvous. This pilot project year that practice will be limited to three different art forms, and then expanded in succeeding years. All instruction will be carried out under the guidance of master artists and artisans.

This year’s Festival will be Saturday and Sunday, August 11 & 12. Gates open both days at 10 AM and admission is $10 for both days of the Festival with kids 12 and under admitted free if accompanied by an adult. Family groups of any size are admitted with one low $25 entrance fee. Have you ever wanted to really practice the traditional arts that are demonstrated every year at the Festival? This year anyone has that opportunity as the Rendezvous introduces a “Chautauqua on the Old Wadena Park grounds. This year marks a new focus for the Rendezvous. Here is the plan for 2018. Wadena County will construct a permanent pavilion at the Rendezvous campground this spring where the annual Rendezvous takes place. With financial support from the 5 Wings Arts Council and

Those completing an apprenticeship (a minimum of 20 hours of instruction) will demonstrate their newly developed and strengthened skills alongside the master artists at the annual Rendezvous. We are calling this new part of the Rendezvous a “Chautauqua. Get all the details on the Society website, www. oldwadenarendezvous.org. As always there will be a fur traders village complete with blacksmith shop and of course the justly famous “Baby’s Fry Bread tent with the world’s best fry

bread featuring bannock, chicken cordon bleu, or fruit fillings. Guests can order a plain fry bread or one with a dash of cinnamon sugar. Local naturalist Dick Oehlenschlager will provide interpretive talks about the flora and fauna of the region as well as guided tours along the park’s “bog walk interpretive trail. You can practice throwing a tomahawk or shooting a BB gun, or build a bluebird house. All of this is included in the low admission price. Artisans will demonstrate a host of fascinating crafts, including pottery making, woodworking and wood carving, lace making, dried flower arranging, leather work, blacksmithing, painting, and basket making. Wadena restaurants will feature Festival specials during the week. Last year Los Jalapenos Mexican Restaurant and the Chamber of Commerce sold hot food and beverages on the Pemberton Law Office lawn across from the Cozy and this year will continue to feature food next to the Theatre.

Celebrating the Arts Wadena Area Madhatters Community Theatre Wadena Area Concert Association Since the early 50s the Wadena Area Concert Association has been supplying fine entertainment opportunities for Wadena and the surrounding communities. Each year a series contains a variety of musical offerings, including both vocal and instrumental soloists and small groups presenting programs of jazz, popular and classical music. All concerts are held in the renovated Memorial Auditorium. Most are held in the evening beginning at 7:30 PM with an occasional Sunday matinee. Admission to the concerts is by seasonal membership which admits the purchaser to Wadena concerts and also concerts in Alexandria, Fergus Falls, Park Rapids and Sauk Centre.

Wadena Area Madhatters, Inc. is a community theatre group combining the talents of many people from Wadena and the surrounding area. The theatre group holds their performances in the Wadena Memorial Auditorium, upstairs of the Bernauer building, and various other venues in the area. They offer everything from full-cast musicals and dramas to acting workshops and a summer youth acting camp, dinner theaters and ‘Mad Lab’ productions. The lab shows offer complex social issue, educational, and experimental theatre plays. Madhatters has performed many big-name plays such as “Guys and Dolls,” “Annie,” and “The Sound of Music,” “Wizard of Oz,” “On Golden Pond,” “Nunsense.” Our latest dinner theatre was “Kitchen Witches.” Mad Lab has produced “girl,” “The Rabbit Hole,” “A Walk in the Woods,” “Whales of August,” and in conjunction with our neighboring theatre group, “True West” and “Twelve Angry Men.”

Wadena Memorial Auditorium Built in 1934, the Wadena Memorial Auditorium is a cultural and historic landmark that provides countless hours of community and regional enjoyment. Wadena-Deer Creek High School’s Drama Department’s Fall play and One-Act play rehearse and perform at the Auditorium. Their performances have received “superior” ratings at the State One-Act Festival six times, as well as 11 appearances at State. The community theater group,

Wadena Area Madhatters, also perform in the auditorium. In addition, they offer a summer theater camp for area youth. Other groups who frequently use the auditorium include the Wadena Area Concert Association Series of concerts, Prairie Fire Theatre, Miss Wadena Scholarship Pageant and many others. Beginning the summer of 2018, the Auditorium, along with adjoining WDC Elementary, will undergo a $14.75 million remodel, which will be completed in two phases over the next two years. To book an event, contact Mary Fix at the Wadena-Deer Creek High School office at (218) 632-2381.

WADENA DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY The Wadena Development Authority (WDA) is the economic and community development arm of the City of Wadena. Formed in 1984, the WDA is celebrating over 30 years of Creating Conditions for Doing Business.

and Small Business Development Center (SBDC), giving the community access to other services and loan funds.

The City of Wadena has a strong base of infrastructure to support business development in the community, including comparatively low municipal water and electricity rates, with plenty of excess capacity to meet your business needs. With two providers offering high speed data access with speeds up to 20 MB and special circuits such as PRI available, a strong local community and technical college, a growing state-of-the-art health care facility, and excellent recreational facilities, the support services for progressive businesses are in place.

From humble beginnings and the generosity of local business owners, trying to raise a few dollars to create a small loan fund of around $20,000, the WDA now manages a loan fund with assets exceeding a million dollars as well as managing over 70 acres of land dedicated for development. We have cultivated a relationship with the Small Business Development Center, to provide a high level of business planning

Partners for a Healthy Wadena Region

What do the decorative art deco street lights that grace Wadena’s main street, and the restored Depot in Burlington Northern Park share in common? They are both projects that Partners for a Healthy Wadena Region spearheaded. The street light project is complete, and Depot in Wadena continues to be the cornerstone for Partners’ activity in the community. During open hours the Depot is open to the public with its display of railroad memorabilia and historic photographs of the railroad history of Wadena. Find out about all the events that are happening in Wadena by stopping at the Depot. Through collaboration with the Wadena County Historical Society the Depot hosts historical exhibits organized by the Historical Society. Information about these exhibits is available at the Historical Society’s website and on the

Partners website: thedepotwadena.org. The popularity of the Depot for business meetings, graduation parties, birthday parties, conferences, wedding receptions, and weddings grows each year. To inquire about rentals please call (218) 849-6087 or visit the Partners website: thedepotwadena.org. The restored Depot is a jewel of prairie vernacular architecture of which Wadena is justly proud. Partners hopes to restore more than the building itself by making the Depot a vibrant part of community life, providing a space where everyone can share Wadena’s past as well as learn about our city’s present and future. Visit the Partners Depot website: thedepotwadena.org, and stop in at one of the exhibits or events such as our “wine and chocolate” fundraiser.

Health LINX: A PERMANENT SOLUTION TO ACID REFLUX from acid reflux. Common symptoms of reflux include heartburn, regurgitation, sore throat, coughing and chest pain. Symptoms can become so severe that they interfere with everyday life. Reflux is caused by weak muscles in the esophagus, or food pipe. The esophagus has small valves called sphincters that open and Dr. David Closs and LINX patient Eric Wallace close to let food and liquid pass through. Weak sphincters Tri-County Health Care and Dr. David can’t close all the way and allow acid and Kloss, FACS, are offering their patients a other stomach contents to splash into permanent solution to acid reflux with the the esophagus. The LINX procedure offered by Tri-County Health Care changes all that. Kloss is a board-certified general surgeon specially trained to perform the LINX surgery, and Tri-County is one of only nine facilities in Minnesota certified to offer it. The procedure involves implanting a tiny ring of titanium magnetic beads around the esophagus near the stomach. The magnets are weak enough so that food can still pass through, but they close immediately after swallowing to prevent the stomach contents from splashing into the esophagus. Typically performed as an outpatient procedure, LINX only requires a small incision, resulting in less pain, minimal scarring and the ability to return to work quickly.

Eric Wallace, 47, of Staples suffered from acid reflux since he was a teenager, and it worsened as he aged. His wife, Wendy, noted that he was constantly in pain and would often get up at night to vomit. Then they discovered LINX at Tri-County. Following the surgery, Eric returned to work within two weeks and didn’t experience any episodes of reflux, a result he described as life-changing. “It has been a miracle for our family,” Wendy added. To learn if you are a candidate for LINX or for more information, call (218) 631-7581 or visit TCHC.org/LINX.
