From our many places of worship to our Maslowski Center, you are sure to find what you need. And rest assured our community has state of the art health care available through Tri-County Hospital and the Wadena Medical Center. But it isn’t all business here in Wadena, you can always go outside and play. Sunnybrook Park is just one of 14 parks and/or playgrounds in the area. And if golf is your thing Whitetail Run, located just north of town on Highway 71, is one of the best kept courses around. When winter months arrive, you can enjoy cross country skiing at beautiful Black’s Grove Park. Plus there are miles of groomed snowmobile trails throughout Wadena County. The Wadena Area Chamber is actively involved in many community events throughout the year. There’s an Easter Egg Hunt for the kids in the spring, and we celebrate the coming of summer with Breakfast in the Park, a Parade, “Family Fun Day,” a Chili Cook-Off in October, a Christmas Festival with 100+ vendors, food and entertainment with horse-drawn carriage rides for the whole family at the end of November and Santa is even known to stop by for a visit.

What to see and do Old Wadena Rendezvous and Folklife Festival 2017 marks the 27th Annual Old Wadena Rendezvous and Folklife Festival, a celebration through storytelling, theater, music, dance, and art of the region’s past and of its rich cultural inheritance. The Festival is held on the grounds of the beautiful Old Wadena County Historical Park on the banks of the Crow Wing River. This year’s Festival will be Saturday and Sunday, August 12 & 13. Gates open both days at 10 a.M. and admission is $10 per person per day with kids 12 and under admitted free if accompanied by an adult. Family groups of any size are admitted with one low $30 entrance fee per day. There will be a fur traders’ village complete with blacksmith shop and of course the justly famous “Baby’s Fry Bread” tent with the world’s best fry bread featuring bannock, chicken cordon bleu, or fruit fillings. Guests can order a plain fry bread or one with a dash of cinnamon sugar. And this year Blue Frog Traders will return once more to the Festival grounds with their store full of treasures from the fur trade era. Local naturalist Dick Oehlenschlager will provide interpretive talks about the flora and fauna of the region as well as guided tours along the park’s “bog walk” interpretive trail. You can practice throwing a tomahawk or shooting a BB gun, or build a bluebird house. All of this is included in the low admission price.
Artisans will demonstrate a host of fascinating crafts, including pottery making, woodworking and wood carving, lace making, dried flower arranging, leather work, blacksmithing, painting, and basket making. And some of the best musical entertainment in the region will be held under the big tent with comfortable seating providing a great chance to meet the musicians up close. This year’s music features Michael Johnson and John Gorka, two legends of folk and popular music both here in Minnesota and across the nation. Puppeteer Margo McCreary’s “On Time Circus” puppet show will return to enchant kids and adults alike. All the information, including directions to Old Wadena Park, is available on the Festival website at www. oldwadnarendezvous.org.
W hiskey Creek Film Festival The Whiskey Creek Film Festival screens films selected from the best current cinema in the nation from Friday, September 8 - Thursday, September 14, 2017 at Wadena’s Cozy Theatre. The Festival will show six awardwinning films in current release, a free family film, and a free “made-in-Minnesota” film. Whiskey Creek has become a must-attend art event every fall in Wadena, and this year marks the Festival’s 13th annual celebration of film art. Sponsors of the Festival include the 5-Wings Arts Council, the
Wadena Convention and Visitors Bureau, and many businesses in the region. Festival passes are available beginning August 1st and can be purchased at the Cozy Theatre, the Wadena Chamber office, the Staples World newspaper office, An Open Book bookstore in Wadena, the Cultural Center in New York Mills, and Beagle and Wolf Books in Park Rapids. Tickets are also available on-line by following the link on the Festival website, www. whiskeycreekfilmfestival. org. The link for ticket sales for this year’s Festival will be
active beginning August 1, 2017. Tickets for single movie screenings are available only at the Cozy box office. Wadena restaurants will feature Festival specials during the week. Last year the Festival introduced a food truck as part of the celebration and this year we will expand the outdoor food offerings on the lawn of
Pemberton Law, across the street from the Cozy. Read about last year’s Festival on the website, www. whiskeycreekfilmfestival.org. Details about 2017 will be posted by August 1, 2017. Ask any questions about the Festival by writing to info@ whiskeycreekfilmfestival.org.

celebrating the arts Wadena Area Concert Association Since the early 50s the Wadena Area Concert Association has been supplying fine entertainment opportunities for Wadena and the surrounding communities. Each year a series contains a variety of musical offerings, including both vocal and instrumental soloists and small groups presenting programs of jazz, popular and classical music. All concerts are held in the renovated Memorial Auditorium. Most are held in the evening beginning at 7:30 P.M. with an occasional Sunday matinee. Admission to the concerts is by seasonal membership which admits the purchaser to Wadena concerts and also concerts in Alexandria, Fergus Falls, Park Rapids and Sauk Centre. Wadena Memorial Auditorium Built in 1934, the Wadena Memorial Auditorium is a cultural and historic landmark that’s provided countless hours of community and regional enjoyment. It has been restored in the beautiful Art Deco style of the early 1930s, with its bold, vivid colors and dramatic design. A grand piano is also a part of the allure of the auditorium’s elegance. As the center for the performing arts, it is one of Wadena’s most appreciated assets. Wadena-Deer Creek High School Drama Department’s “One Act Play” performance, under the direction of High School English teacher, Jay Patterson, rehearses and performs in the auditorium. Their performances have received “superior” ratings
at the State Competition level six times as well as 11 appearances at state. The community theater group, “Madhatters,” perform in the auditorium, and many area performers participate in these events. They also provide a summer camp for area youth interested in learning more about drama. Other groups who frequently use the auditorium include the Wadena Concert Association, Community Concert Band and Choir, Miss Wadena Pageant and other musical performers. The auditorium is part of Wadena-Deer Creek Public Schools’ campus. To schedule an event, contact Wadena Deer Creek School at (218) 632-2381.

Wadena develoPMent authority and Economic Development (DEED), and Small Business Development Center (SBDC), giving the community access to other services and loan funds.
The Wadena Development Authority (WDA) is the economic and community development arm of the City of Wadena. Formed in 1984, the WDA is celebrating over 30 years of ”Creating Conditions for Doing Business.” From humble beginnings and the generosity of local business owners, trying to raise a few dollars to create a small loan fund of around $20,000, the WDA now manages a loan fund with assets exceeding a million dollars as well as managing over 70 acres of land dedicated for development. We have cultivated a relationship with the Small Business Development Center, to provide a high level of business planning and development assistance to local entrepreneurs. We also maintain close ties to other regional organizations like the Region Five Development Commission, the Initiative Foundation, a local office of the Minnesota Department of Employment
“
The City of Wadena has a strong base of infrastructure to support business development in the community, including comparatively low municipal water and electricity rates, with plenty of excess capacity to meet your business needs. With two providers offering high speed data access with speeds up to 20 Mb. and special circuits such as PRI available, a strong local community and technical college, a growing state-of-the-art health care facility, and excellent recreational facilities, the support services for progressive businesses are in place. Wadena continues a long relationship working with DEED to provide the best tools to grow your business. Providing tax breaks for new and expanding businesses, TIF and tax abatement, DEED

This program fosters a spirit of enterprise and entrepreneurship in local high school students interested in starting a new business locally. The Wadena Development Authority has been “Creating Conditions for Doing Business” for 30 plus years, and conditions have never been better. Come see me at the Wadena Development Authority and see how we can create even better conditions for YOUR business. Partners for a healthy ealthy Wadena region
What do the youth-centered Cyber Café, the decorative art deco street lights that grace Wadena’s main street, and the restored Depot in Burlington Northern Park share in common? They are all projects that Partners for a Healthy Wadena Region spearheaded. While the Cyber Café operates on its own today, and the street light project is complete, the Depot in Wadena continues to be the cornerstone for Partners’ activity in the community. During open hours the Depot is open to the public with its display of railroad memorabilia and historic photographs of the railroad history of Wadena. Find out about all the events that are happening in Wadena by stopping at the Depot. Through collaboration with the Wadena County Historical Society the Depot hosts historical exhibits organized by the Historical Society. Information about these exhibits is available at the Historical
Society’s website and on the Partners website: thedepotwadena.org. The popularity of the Depot for business meetings, graduation parties, birthday parties, conferences, wedding receptions, and weddings grows each year. To inquire about rentals please call (218) 849-6087 or visit the Partners website: thedepotwadena.org. The restored Depot is a jewel of prairie vernacular architecture of which Wadena is justly proud. Partners hopes to restore more than the building itself by making the Depot a vibrant part of community life, providing a space where everyone can share Wadena’s past as well as learn about our city’s present and future. Visit the Partners Depot website: thedepotwadena.org, and stop in at one of the exhibits or events such as our “wine and chocolate” fundraiser. Partners is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit corporation and its offices are located in the Depot. Inquiries about the Depot and Partners may be directed to thedepotwadena@ gmail.com.

World-class iMaging, right here in Wadena the very best in the industry today, allowing for greater diagnostic efficiency and confidence in the treatment of patients. 3D Mammography is a revolutionary tool in the early detection of breast cancer and the new standard in breast cancer screening today. Tri-County’s new Genius 3D technology provides a 41% increase in the detection of invasive breast cancers compared to 2D alone, as well as up to a 40% reduction in anxiety producing false-positive recalls. The result is greater accuracy in diagnosis and ideally, reduced stress on the patient. Eliminating barriers to care; it is a challenge faced by rural health care systems across the country. Patients are often forced to drive long distances to receive the care they need and with it comes added expense, stress, and anxiety for both patients and their families. Taking a huge step toward eliminating these barriers, the addition of Tri-County Health Care’s NEW Advanced Imaging Suite provides patients with access to the very latest in Diagnostic Imaging technology right here at home. Providing an array of leading-edge technology, the Advanced Imaging Suite is highlighted by Tri-County’s MRI Scanner and 3D Mammography technology.
