With more than 19 years at Marriott and over 25 years in hospitality, Mr. Walia has led teams, opened landmark properties, and steered luxury brands across continents. In this exclusive interview, he shares personal stories, strategic insights, and his vision for the future of travel.

Q: With such a long and successful career in hospitality, where should someone begin if they aspire to join the Marriott brand?

It’s less about the exact job title and more about the mindset you bring to the role. Hospitality is, at its core, about human connection. You’re not just selling a bed for the night or a meal in a restaurant—you’re creating moments people will remember for years.

That’s why I believe you should start in a role that puts you close to guests. Experience firsthand how service, empathy, and attention to detail shape their journey. When you interact with guests directly, you begin to understand what delights them, what frustrates them, and what keeps them coming back. That understanding becomes the foundation for any role in this industry, whether you eventually move into sales, operations, or leadership.

I also think it’s essential to embrace every opportunity—especially the ones you didn’t plan for. Early in my career, I had my heart set on working in the front office. But my first assignment was as a butler, and I’ll admit, I thought it was a step backward. Instead, it became one of the most valuable experiences of my life.

Mr. Walia Hospitality

with Heart: A Conversation with Mr. Walia on Marriott’s Growth, Loyalty, and the Future of Travel

I cared for high-profile guests, including Michael Jackson during his visit to India.

Serving him wasn’t just about delivering meals—it was about anticipating needs, protecting privacy, and creating comfort in an unfamiliar environment.

That role taught me that sometimes the “detour” is actually the most rewarding part of the journey. In hospitality, every position— whether in the heart of the house or on the front line—teaches you something new about people, service, and leadership.

Finally, I tell anyone entering this field: passion and energy are non-negotiable. This is not a nine-to-five job. There will be long hours, unexpected challenges, and high expectations from guests. But if you genuinely love the business of making people feel welcome, you’ll find it’s one of the most rewarding careers in the world. If I could go back in time, I would choose it all over again.

Q: Marriott is opening new properties worldwide. What key steps do you take to ensure a new hotel truly reflects the brand’s spirit and values?

Every opening is a balancing act between operational excellence and emotional connection. When we open a new Marriott luxury property, we aren’t just building a hotel— we’re creating a new chapter in the brand’s story. That means embedding our culture and service values from the very start.

Currently, I oversee operations for the Middle East (including Egypt and Turkiye) which features over 260 operating properties and over 100 projects in the pipeline.

I also spearhead our luxury hotels across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa which comprises over 180 properties and around 100 more in the pipeline. In the Middle East, our strongest growth is in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. Each of these markets is unique, but the common thread is that guests are seeking experiences over possessions.

People want to celebrate milestones with their families, immerse themselves in new cultures, and return home with stories they can’t find anywhere else.

Q: Marriott Bonvoy has become one of the most recognized loyalty programs in hospitality. How does it impact guest satisfaction and your business model?

Marriott Bonvoy is a game-changer. With nearly 248 million members worldwide, it’s one of the largest and most engaged loyalty programs in any industry. For hotel owners, that means instant access to a massive global customer base. For guests, it’s both a rewards system and a passport to experiences they might never have imagined.

Yes, points are part of the appeal, but what’s equally exciting is how members can use them. Through Marriott Bonvoy Moments, we offer experiences that money can’t buy—VIP access to Formula 1, exclusive concerts with artists like Taylor Swift, private dining with world-class chefs, or luxury escapes to destinations like the Masai Mara.

The program also builds a long-term relationship with guests. When a member books with us, they’re not just choosing a hotel for that trip—they’re deepening their connection with the brand. It keeps them engaged across our portfolio, whether they’re staying at a Fairfield in one city or a Ritz-Carlton in another.

From a business perspective, that loyalty drives repeat stays, higher guest satisfaction, and stronger word-of-mouth. It’s a virtuous cycle—loyalty leads to more bookings, which funds more experiences, which in turn builds more loyalty.

Q: Technology is changing the guest experience. How is Marriott balancing innovation with the human touch?

Technology is an incredible enabler, but it will never replace the human element in hospitality. You can now book your stay, check in, use your phone as a room key, order in-room dining, and check out without ever speaking to a person. For certain trips—like quick business travel—that efficiency is invaluable.

But when you’re on a family holiday or celebrating a special occasion, you might want the concierge to suggest a hidden gem restaurant or the front desk to arrange a last-minute surprise for your partner. That’s where the human element is irreplaceable.

Our strategy is to give guests choice. Technology should free up our associates’ time so they can spend more of it engaging with guests who want that interaction. It’s about coexisting—using digital tools to enhance, not replace, the personal connections that define great hospitality.

Q: Looking at Azerbaijan, do you see potential for Marriott’s growth beyond Baku?

Definitely. Globally, travelers are seeking destinations they haven’t explored before. Iconic cities like Paris, London, and Rome will always be on the map, but there’s a growing appetite for “new discoveries.”

This is my first visit to Baku, and I’ve been truly impressed—it’s a vibrant, beautiful city with a unique mix of history and modernity. We already have The Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott here, but I see opportunities to expand into premium brands as well, creating more choice for travelers.

The potential isn’t limited to the capital. Regional destinations in Azerbaijan have the landscapes, culture, and warmth to attract both domestic and international visitors. With the right infrastructure and partnerships, I believe Marriott could play a key role in that growth.

Q: We hear you’ve been inspired by Azerbaijan’s hospitality talent development initiatives. Why is that important?

It’s critical. We can build stunning hotels, expand our loyalty program, and create unique experiences—but without the right people, none of it works. Hospitality is a people business, and talent is our most valuable asset.

That’s why I find what’s happening here so exciting. Investing in local talent ensures that growth is sustainable. It also means guests experience genuine, authentic hospitality that reflects the culture of the destination.

When we open a hotel in a new market, our goal isn’t just to bring in a brand—it’s to create opportunities for the community and nurture the next generation of hospitality leaders.

Thefutureofhospitalityisbeingshapedbyrest, experiences, authenticity, and a sense of belonging.

At Art Gallery Hotel, you are welcomed with love — in every language. Romero Britto, founder of the Happy Art Movement, is a world-renowned artist who has created a unique visual style that expresses happiness, fun, love, and hope, inspiring millions around the globe.

The exhibit showcases Ahmed’s modern take on a historic dragon carpet from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Inspired by a fire-breathing dragon motif that journeyed through Azerbaijan, he transforms it into an abstract symbol. Bold red tones reference fire, while graffiti-style text quotes Rumi: “Set your life on fire.” Some works extend beyond the carpet, with words continuing onto the gallery walls.

Fred Allard is a sculptor from Nice and a leading figure in contemporary art. His background in fashion fuels his creative vision. Exploring themes like luxury, consumerism, and identity, he casts shopping bags filled with soda bottles in resin— merging street culture with high-end aesthetics in bold sculptural form.

Farhad Farzaliyev uses the Kelaghayi—a traditional Azerbaijani silk scarf—as a powerful symbol in his contemporary art. More than decoration, it represents the fusion of heritage and modernity, highlighting how cultural identity evolves and adapts over time.

Hidden Corners, Local Flavors, and Real Recommendations From the Concierge of Baku

Marriott Hotel Boulevard

Concierges don’t just direct guests — they open doors to experiences.

At Baku Marriott Hotel Boulevard, the concierge team has long been the bridge between the city’s timeless beauty and those discovering it for the first time.

In this interview, the team shares their most trusted recommendations — from golden-hour viewpoints to tea-soaked alleys, street food secrets, and meaningful keepsakes.

IF A GUEST ONLY HAS ONE AFTERNOON TO TRULY FEEL THE CITY, WHERE SHOULD THEY GO?

Highland Park at sunset is where we always begin. The walk past Martyrs’ Lane is serene, and once you reach the view, you see all of Baku — the Flame Towers, the Bay, the shifting colors of the sky. Guests often pause and say they finally understand the city's soul.

WHAT’S ONE DISH VISITORS ALWAYS REMEMBER?

Qutab — fresh off the saj near İçərişəhər — is a must. It's simple street food, but locals know it’s special. Guests also love dovga, the warm yogurt and herb soup. It’s light, comforting, and always a surprise to those tasting it for the first time.

ARE THERE ANY PLACES MOST TOURISTS MISS — BUT SHOULDN’T?

There’s an alley just behind the Carpet Museum that’s quietly beautiful in the evening. It’s not a destination, but a feeling.

Also, the Miniature Book Museum — tiny and tucked away, but full of personality. Guests always leave smiling.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO EXPLORE BAKU ON FOOT?

Wander Icharishahar without a plan. Let instinct guide you — turn into courtyards, follow winding lanes, take it slow. Then make your way to the Boulevard and walk along the sea. You don’t need to rush to understand this city.

WHAT GIFTS FEEL PERSONAL AND AUTHENTIC TO BRING HOME?

Kelagayi scarves are always meaningful — each one handmade and steeped in tradition. We also recommend ABAD artisan pieces, like hand-beaten copper trays or ceramic items. They support local craftsmen and carry a story

Let the city set the pace. Look up. Listen. Smile at strangers. Drink your tea slowly. Baku rewards those who pay attention to the quiet details. AND FINALLY, WHAT’S YOUR BEST ADVICE TO ANY GUEST VISITING BAKU FOR THE FIRST TIME?

Amazing staff and great hospitality!

I have recently stayed at Sheraton Baku Intourist and it is one of the best hotels with amazing hospitality. All the staff members take every step to make customers happy and look at all minute details.

In the heart of Baku

This boutique hotel was a gem in the happening part of Baku. It is close to the old city, the famed Nizami street, and all the eating places. The Caspian sea promenade is just a stone’s throw away. It is a plush and clean hotel with friendly staff, good breakfast.

Good service, Good location

Our experience staying at the Baku Marriott Hotel Boulevard exceeded all expectations, primarily due to the outstanding staff who went above and beyond to ensure our comfort and satisfaction. From the moment we arrived, we were treated with exceptional hospitality. Mr. Said at the front desk recognized our circumstances and graciously offered an early check-in options along with spending time on breakfast.

Great hotel!

The best staff I've ever met: all very friendly, polite, always willing to help. Very delicious food: all food is fresh, the serving of dishes is beautiful, all dishes are delicious. Rooms are clean, comfortable. Great hotel!

Third time lucky

Overlooking the bay with fabulous views of the city and the largest national flag in the world, this smart, contemporary, luxury hotel is ideal for enjoying Baku's sights. Our third floor, sea view room had all the amenities one would expect from a hotel with this star rating. The communal areas were equally smart, with a restaurant and bar fitting of the environment. Loved our stay.

Very recommended

A great hotel and pleasurfull experiences. When you come at the end of the day to your room and find a cake from the hotel, waiting with wishings of a happy birthday. That what makes the difference.

Fascinating Hospitality Trends That Are Shaping the

Guest Experience

Sleep is the new luxury.

Forget champagne and caviar – what guests crave most today is rest. Hotels are introducing sleep concierges, curated pillow menus, soundscapes, and circadian lighting systems. A well-rested guest not only remembers their stay more fondly but is also more likely to return.

The rise of the “experience economy.”

Travelers don’t just want to stay; they want to do. From pottery classes with local artisans to farm-to-table cooking workshops, experiential add-ons are driving bookings. It’s no longer about where you sleep, but what you’ll tell your friends you did there.

Digital detox is in demand.

In a hyper-connected world, travelers are paying to disconnect. More hotels are offering phonefree zones, tech-free retreats, and mindfulness programs that let guests step away from screens and reconnect with themselves. Silence and simplicity are becoming the ultimate modern luxuries.

Food with a story tastes better.

Today’s diners want more than a meal – they want meaning. Menus that highlight origin, farmer partnerships, and cultural traditions are captivating guests. Every dish that carries a story transforms dinner into an experience worth remembering.

Flexible spaces, flexible lives.

Lobbies are no longer just waiting areas – they’re coworking hubs, cocktail lounges, and social playgrounds. Guests value hotels that blur the lines between work, play, and connection, offering spaces that adapt to their lifestyle. Dynamic design is making hotels feel less like properties and more like living communities.

Membership is the new loyalty.

Forget dusty points systems – exclusive memberships are reshaping hotel loyalty. From curated wellness clubs to invitation-only dining circles, hotels are building communities that extend far beyond a single stay. Belonging is becoming more powerful than discounts.
