Interesting Facts about Hospitality

Matt Balcik Chief Executive Officer, Absheron Hotel Group

Yesterday’s Vision, Today’s Success, Tomorrow’s Promise

Q: As the hospitality sector continues to grow and evolve, it’s fascinating to explore: what are the key steps involved in opening a new hotel?

A: Opening a new hotel is a complex, multi-layered process. It begins with thorough market research and a competitive analysis of the selected location. This is followed by defining the hotel’s concept, positioning strategy, and target audience. The design and operational frameworks are then developed in line with global hospitality standards. The most critical phase, however, is building and training the team — because at the heart of every successful hotel is not just its infrastructure, but the people who shape the guest experience.

Actually, if I go into the details, I could speak at length — because to answer this question deeply would require exploring many layers. But if I had to sum it up in one sentence, I’d say: it’s all about creating a memorable experience.

Q: Talking about new openings — what exciting projects and concepts are currently in the pipeline?

A: With 11 hotels already under its portfolio, Absheron Hotel Group firmly believes that the best is yet to come — and we are truly excited about the new chapters ahead.

We are currently working on several important and promising projects. These include our second property in Shusha — Yasemen Hotel & Restaurant, the first branded hotel in the Karabakh region — Hilton Garden Inn Aghdam, a new hotel opening soon in Tbilisi, and Boutique 19 Hotel, which is preparing to resume operations after the pandemic and will welcome guests during the Formula 1 season. Each of these projects is designed with a unique purpose and audience in mind. However, what unites them all is our shared commitment to continuous growth, service excellence, and delivering memorable experiences for every guest.

Q: Talking about the industry, what would you say is the most exciting change you’ve seen recently?

A: The changes I’ve witnessed in the hospitality industry over the past few years have been more dynamic and exciting than ever. It’s no longer just about offering a room and good service guests now seek meaningful experiences, emotional connections, and a sense of personalization. The seamless integration of technology into this journey marks a new chapter for the industry.

In Azerbaijan, these shifts are even more exciting to witness. New hotels are entering the market with strong concepts and unique stories. There’s growing investment in local talent, young leaders are emerging, and service is becoming both more modern and heartfelt. I believe we’re no longer just offering hospitality; we’re creating lasting memories. And seeing Azerbaijan find its own voice in this transformation is truly inspiring, both professionally and personally.

Q: . How does Absheron Hotel Group’s position as part of PASHA Real Estate influence the company’s growth and development vision?

As part of the PASHA Real Estate family, we benefit from a broader ecosystem that prioritizes investment in people, innovation, and responsible business practices. This alignment strengthens our commitment to excellence, empowers our teams, and fuels our ambition to shape the hospitality landscape in Azerbaijan and beyond.

Q: Staying true to PASHA Real Estate’s values and vision, what motivated you the most to create the Addımla program? What led you to the decision to launch such an initiative?

A: When the idea for the “Addımla” program was taking shape, our goal wasn’t just to create a training initiative — we wanted to build something that inspired belief and created real value. One of the turning points for me came during a speech by PASHA Holding’s CEO, Jalal Gasimov. In his words, he said something that deeply resonated with me: “A person who loves their homeland, family, and nation will also love the work they do.” That sentence left a lasting impression on me, and in that moment, I found a strong sense of motivation to bring this initiative to life.Because if we give people the chance to believe in themselves and the work they do, they can not only transform their own lives — they can positively impact those around them as well. The “Addımla” program is a true reflection of that vision.

Every challenge is an opportunity to build trust, form connections, and grow as a team. But the best is yet to come!

Eid al-Adha

A Celebration of Kindness

Eid al-Adha is not just a religious tradition; it is a time for sharing, coming together, and solidarity. Every year, on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, Muslims around the world celebrate this special day. For some, it begins with the early morning sacrifice, while others share gifts with smiles on their faces. Above all, Eid al-Adha is a celebration of quiet kindness.

Inspired by the story of Prophet Ibrahim (PBUH), this holiday is not just about giving material gifts, but about sharing from the heart. On this day, the gifts we offer are not just meat, but also prayers and blessings.

In Azerbaijan, Eid al-Adha is not only a religious event but also a cultural celebration. Families prepare their own special meals, and each gift comes with its own prayer. As children smell the festive air, the elders grow a little softer-hearted on this day.

Eid al-Adha reminds us that kindness doesn’t need to be grand. Sometimes, a simple gift, a warm greeting, or a heartfelt gesture is enough.

Eid al-Adha is celebrated not only in Azerbaijan but also in other Muslim countries. This holiday, one of the most important in Islam, is widely observed throughout the Muslim world.

This year, Eid al-Adha will be celebrated from June 6 to 9, 2025.

Global Wellness Day

Celebrate Well-Being:

Embrace Global Wellness Day

What if one day really could change your whole life? That’s the question that sparked the creation of Global Wellness Day, an international movement that began in Türkiye in 2012 and is now celebrated in over 170 countries across the globe. Held each year on June 14, this special day is all about raising awareness of the importance of living well—physically, mentally, and emotionally.

The idea is simple: dedicate one day to reflect, recharge, and reconsider how you live your life— and how you could live it better. Wellness isn’t just about green smoothies or yoga mats. It’s about small, sustainable steps—getting more rest, moving your body, spending time in nature, disconnecting from screens—that lead to a healthier, more fulfilling lifestyle.

The day’s motto says it all: “One day can change your whole life.” And over the years, what started as a one-day event has evolved into a global movement that many now celebrate throughout the entire month of June.

To mark Global Wellness Month, we’re inviting you to prioritize yourself in ways that feel good and meaningful.

At Marriott Baku Hotel, relax and recharge with our spa and fitness facilities, where we’re offering exclusive discounts and special packages on memberships throughout the month. And if your version of wellness includes sunshine, music, and poolside fun, then Pik Palace Hotel has just what you need. Our lively summer pool parties are all about lifting your spirits with refreshing drinks, upbeat vibes, and that perfect splash of energy.

This June, whether you're soaking up the sun, taking time to unwind, or kickstarting new healthy habits—let it be a month for you. Because wellness isn’t a luxury, it’s a way of life.- change heading

HOTEL & RESTAURANT

Yasəmən Hotel & Restaurant is named after the delicately fragrant lilac flower — a symbol of charm and tranquility.

Named after the delicately fragrant lilac flower, Yasəmən Hotel promises each guest a journey filled with elegance, serenity, and deep reflection.

Located in the very center of Shusha, on Kocharli Street, this haven has been formed through the restoration of three historical residential buildings – rare examples of the Karabakh architectural school dating back to the mid19th century. Severely damaged during the occupation, these buildings have been meticulously restored to their original style with the initiative and support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, bringing them back to life as a hotel.

Rebuilt in authentic Karabakh architectural style, both the exterior and interior of Yasəmən Hotel transport visitors back to medieval Shusha. This is more than just a place to stay – it’s a space that preserves the spirit of the city, bridges the past and present, and transforms moments of rest into a refined art form.

The hotel consists of two buildings and offers comfortable rooms in "double," "twin," and "junior" categories. Sunlit lobbies, thoughtfully prepared rooms, and delicate yasəmən flowers in quiet corners reveal the beauty within simplicity and the depth within calm.

The hotel’s restaurant and several terraces provide guests with the opportunity to enjoy the stunning views of Shusha and savor the authentic flavors of the region.

Work is ongoing to restore other historical residential buildings in the surrounding area, with the aim of integrating them into the hotel complex in the future. Yasəmən seeks to reflect the lifestyle and heartfelt hospitality of the local people of Shusha to all those returning to this land or discovering it for the first time.

Whether you're on a business trip, vacation, or in search of inspiration – Yasəmən Hotel will welcome you with its tranquility, clarity, and aesthetic harmony. Every smile, every service, every thoughtful detail is offered with genuine care and respect for our guests.

Your home in Shusha is waiting for you!

Academy of Future

The AHG Academy brings together two key initiatives — the Addımla Program and the AHG Hospitality Academy — that embody growth, support, and a brighter future, in alignment with PASHA Holding’s vision.

Addımla Program

The “Addımla” initiative by Absheron Hotel Group reflects our commitment to uncovering talent and creating new opportunities across the regions of Azerbaijan. Through comprehensive training, mentorship, and job placement, the program supports individuals to grow and be better. The program has successfully completed four development stages, with each stage welcoming a new group of participants. Today, the first graduates have already started their careers — a testament to the program’s positive impact.

AHG Hospitality Academy

The AHG Hospitality Academy offers a diverse range of programs designed to support the professional growth of our hospitality talents across all levels. From first-time job seekers to experienced managers, the Academy provides structured pathways to develop essential skills, build confidence, and thrive within the Absheron Hotel Group family.

Each program is built around a singular vision — Be The One. It’s more than just training; it’s about opening doors to new opportunities and helping individuals unlock their full potential. One of its cornerstone initiatives is the Phase 1 which is Supervisory Readiness Program, crafted to prepare entry-level team members for leadership roles. Participants go through a comprehensive journey that includes orientation sessions, English and computer skills, emotional intelligence training, and department-specific learning in areas such as Front Office, Food & Beverage, and Housekeeping.

The goal is to equip future supervisors not just with technical knowledge, but also with the mindset and interpersonal skills needed to lead effectively. For those already in supervisory positions, the 2nd Phase is Managerial Readiness Program which offers the next step in career development. This intensive program delves into leadership strategies, guest relations, hospitality attitude, and employee engagement, with additional modules on revenue management and sales excellence. It’s about helping aspiring managers transition with confidence, vision, and a strategic outlook. The 3rd Phase is The Head of Department (HOD) Readiness Program which supports employees moving into senior leadership. It focuses on mastering advanced leadership techniques, financial literacy in hospitality, and a deep understanding of service excellence. From business ethics to guest experience design, this program prepares leaders who will shape the future of hospitality. Finally, Phase 4 Unleash YOU Program brings a holistic approach to personal and professional development. It blends self-discovery, leadership growth, and mental well-being — guiding participants to overcome challenges, step into their potential, and grow with purpose. At AHG Hospitality Academy, learning is a launchpad — not only for skills, but for self-belief, leadership, and lifelong impact in the world of hospitality.

Interesting facts in Hospitality

Let’s dive into the undeniable benefits of digital check-ins and explore why this trend is reshaping the hospitality industry:

1. Speedy Arrivals: No More Waiting in Line

Imagine arriving at your hotel after a long flight and skipping the front desk entirely. With digital check-ins, guests can bypass the usual wait and head straight to their rooms. This is especially a game-changer for late-night arrivals or those rushing to make a meeting—saving time and hassle from the very beginning.

2. Ultimate Convenience at Your Fingertips

Digital check-in puts the power back in the hands of the guest. Whether through a mobile app or self-service kiosk, travelers can check in, choose room preferences, and even unlock their room with just a few taps on their phone. It’s a seamless experience that eliminates the need for unnecessary human interaction, streamlining the entire arrival process.

3. 24/7 Flexibility: Check-In Whenever You Want

No more racing against a traditional check-in time. With automation, guests can arrive at any hour of the day or night and still enjoy a smooth check-in experience. Late flight? No problem. This 24/7 flexibility allows for much-needed peace of mind for modern travelers with irregular schedules.

5. Operational Efficiency for Hotels

This streamlined process not only improves the hotel’s efficiency but also makes for a smoother, faster stay for guests. It’s a win-win situation.

6. A Greener Approach to Travel

In today’s eco-conscious world, digital check-ins offer an environmentally friendly alternative. By eliminating the need for printed forms, key cards, and other paper materials, hotels reduce waste, helping guests feel better about their carbon footprint while enjoying a modern stay.

Guests are increasingly drawn to the convenience and simplicity of digital check-in. It offers them more control over their experience, and with less waiting around, overall satisfaction tends to soar.
