Year Round activities ALPENA — Alpena has a lot to offer year-round, in the summer you can hike, rent a kayak, and float down one of the area’s many rivers with scenery that will take your breath away. In the fall you can take a cruise and check out all the beautiful colors fall foliage brings to life.

No matter what your passion is or what hobbies you enjoy, there is something for everyone in Northeast Michigan.

During the warm weather months, you can paddle and sail on Lake Huron, hike trails such as Norway Ridge Pathway Trailhead, and the Alpena Township Nature Preserve. You can also visit lighthouses like the Little Red Lighthouse located at the marina in Alpena.

Interested in fishing? There are numerous spots throughout the Alpena area where you can try your luck.

Thunder Bay is known for walleye, Atlantic salmon, steelhead, and lake trout. There are many charters that offer fishing services that will help you catch the fish of your dreams.

Long Lake is known for clear water, this 5,652-acre lake is excellent for smallmouth and largemouth bass, plus northern pike and panfish.

Grand Lake offers good fishing for smallmouth bass, perch, and walleye.

Fletcher Pond is highly regarded for largemouth bass, pike, and panfish.

Thunder Bay River is a 75-mile-long river system popular for bass, pike, walleye, and, near the 9th Street Bridge area, salmon.

Several fishing charters operate within the Alpena area for fishing on Lake Huron. Including, Fish Knot Charters, Trout Scout Charters, and Chum Bucket Sportfishing.

If you are interested in fishing and/or exploring, Rockport State Recreation Area is a great destination any time of the year. Rockport is a 4,237-acre, former limestone quarry north of Alpena that serves as Michigan’s 100th state park, renowned for its fossil hunting, hiking trails, and status as a Dark Sky Preserve.

Located on Lake Huron, it features sinkholes, a deepwater boat launch, and the historic Besser Natural Area/ Bell Village ghost town.

A Year of Alpena events JOSH JAMBOR News Staff Writer Throughout the year there are many events planned in Alpena County for people of all ages. From fishing, flowers, or carnival rides.

Early each year, there are a host of large events and activities for people to enjoy. Among them are the Special Olympics Polar Plunge, the annual New Year’s Eve celebration with fireworks in downtown Alpena, and the annual ice festival in February. Below are some of the events in Alpena County that are popular.

Alpena Ice Festival The event begins at Mich-e-kewis Park with the Alpena Farmers Market, ice sculptures arrive from Ice Creations of Napolean, Ohio, a huge bonfire by the Alpena Fire Department, food trucks, and other snow and ice-related activities. Wrap up the day in Downtown Alpena by strolling the city streets to enjoy dazzling ice sculptures, live music, firepits, and more special winter activities throughout the downtown.

April 11 - Love Melts Ice The Long Rapids Community, along with Nicolet Bank and Pepsi, are hosting an event entitled Love Melts Ice at the Long Rapids Township Hall. It is a free family event to honor community volunteers, law enforcement, and lineman who served during the Ice Storm in 2025. The event will have numerous activities such as potato sack parkour, cornhole, a gummy bear toss, and sugar cookie decorating just to name a few.

The event starts at 5:30 pm.

April 18 - Alpena Spring Craft and Vendor The third annual Alpena Spring Craft and Vendor Show will take place Saturday, April 18, the event is hosted by 4 Seasons Craft & Vendor Shows. The event will take place at the Alpena VFW Post 2496, located at 2900 Connon Road, from 9am to 3pm. This event will feature many talented crafters, such as crocheters, knitters, sewers, paper crafters, rock crafts, jewelry and much more. Additionally, a local cause or charity will be selected to receive any funds raised from a donation jar.

Every Saturday in May Lettuce Turnip the Beet – Alpena Farmers Market The Alpena Farmers market will host “Lettuce Turnip the Beet” on Saturday’s from 9am to 12pm. Whether you’re grabbing your weekly veggies, picking up a gift, or just enjoying the atmosphere the farmers market has got you covered.

May 16 Mental Health Movement 2k/5k/10k Run/Walk Northeast Michigan Community Mental Health will host a Mental Health Movement 2k/5k/10k run walk.

The goal is to bring awareness to mental health in our four-county area that includes Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency, and Presque Isle, while also reducing the stigma of mental health. Anyone can participate and all routes are wheelchair and stroller accessible.

However, the 10k is geared toward runners.

June 5 - Petal Pub Crawl Visit participating downtown bars and taprooms to collect flower cards in a poker-run-style game. Buy a drink to swap a card if you like and turn in your best hand at the end of the night for a chance to win Flower Fest swag, flower bouquets, and Downtown Dollars!

The 2026 event runs from June 5–7, featuring live music, bouquet bars, and a 5K/1-mile run.

June 20 - Alpena Blues Festival This year’s Alpena Blues Festival will be held at the Bandshell located at Bay View Park in Alpena.

The festival runs from 2 pm to 10 pm. Music is provided by professional and local, non-professional musicians. With the goal of offering the community a unique musical experience to promote and preserve Blues music and its history. For a lineup and more information go to: www.alpenablues.org.

July 18-27 - The Michigan Brown Trout Festival This festival began in 1975, and it’s showing no signs of stopping. The Michigan Brown Trout Festival is held annually at the Alpena Marina (400 E Chisholm Published by The Alpena News 2026

July 19 - Michigan Brown Trout Kids Day The Michigan Brown Trout Festival will host Kids Day from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm. There will be a school supply giveaway. Lunch will be provided, and there will be opportunities to earn prizes. The event takes place at the Alpena Boat Harbor Big Tent and City of Alpena parking lot.

August August in Alpena County is packed with activity, anchored by the Alpena County Fair (mid-August) featuring rodeos, demolition derbies, and harness racing. November 26 The Bolenz Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting The annual holiday parade and the lighting of the community Christmas tree at Culligan Plaza is one of the largest events in Alpena each year. Floats decorated in Christmas decorations and lights move through the downtown to the delight of the thousands of onlookers waiting to get a glimpse of Santa. Immediately after the parade, the crowd gathers around the plaza where the Christmas tree comes to life and Santa takes a bit to visit with the crowd.

December 31 - New Year’s Eve Bash The annual New Year’s Eve bash in downtown Alpena welcomes in the new year with style, as many of the downtown businesses stay open late and there is typically a live band that provides entertainment.

There are many warm pits to help people to take the chill off and a five minute firework display after the clock reaches midnight.

PRESQUE ISLE ACTIVITIES PRESQUE ISLE — Presque Isle County is one of four counties in Northeast Michigan. It is located along the shore of Lake Huron and has an area of 678 square miles and 72 miles of shoreline.

Presque Isle County’s main two cities include Rogers City, known for its limestone quarries, and Onaway, known as the “sturgeon capital of Michigan.” Other communities in the county include Posen, Millersburg, Metz, Hawks, Ocqeoc, and more.

ATTRACTIONS There are many attractions around Presque Isle County that can offer visitors and residents opportunities for fun year round.

Presque Isle Lighthouses Rogers City is home to the Old Lighthouse, New Lighthouse, Range Lights, and 1905 Keeper’s House which are nestled on the shores of Lake Huron.

Historically, Presque Isle Harbor was the only safe harbor for the trading and shipping industries between Fort Gratiot and the Straits of Mackinac, according to the Presque Isle Township Museum Society.

The lighthouses are open to the public to climb for a fee.

TRAILS AND PARKS Like all of Michigan, Presque Isle County is rich in natural resources and home to complex trail systems and beautiful parks that make the area a go-to spot for those who like to adventure.

Rockport State Recreation Area Rockport State Recreation Area is a favorite spot for locals and visitors as it offers 4,237 acres of outdoor adventure.

Visitors can explore the remains of a 300-acre quarry and natural formations. Rockport is a perfect location to hunt for fossils, go horseback riding, mountain biking, hiking, stargazing, or just explore the lakeshore.

According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the park is home to a designated dark sky preserve which provides opportunities to view the night sky without light pollution from Alpena.

The Besser Natural Area, which forms the northern section of the park, can be accessed from the Rockport trails or from the Besser Natural Area parking lot. The natural area is home to the Besser Bell Pathway, a shipwreck, and more than 4,000 feet of Lake Huron shoreline.

Huron Sunrise Trail The Huron Sunrise Trail is an 11-mile, paved trail that is open to biking, hiking, and nature walks along the shores of Lake Huron.

This trail system, built on a retired railroad corridor, connects Rogers City to Hoeft State Park and the 40 Mile Point Lighthouse. PRESQUE ISLE events KAYLA WIKARYASZ News Staff Writer PRESQUE ISLE — Though slightly smaller in population than its neighbor, Alpena County, Presque Isle boasts an impressive lineup of community events throughout the year. Between 14 townships, two cities, and two villages there is no shortage of fun to be had.

Sturgeon fishing statewide has been limited for almost 100 years, according to the DNR. Harvesting lake sturgeon was first prohibited by the state legislature in 1928, then was opened to strictly regulated fishing twenty years later. In 1948, a limited sport fishery for lake sturgeon was allowed on inland lakes, which included Black Lake.

ROGERS CITY Rogers City is famous for its annual Nautical Festival which offers a wide range of activities such as craft shows, a grand parade, food vendors, a fireworks show, and more. Residents from across the county, and neighboring counties, flock to the lakeside town to celebrate Roger City’s unique beauty.

In 1977, the Rogers City Chamber of Commerce began the event to raise money to put back into the community, and it has been an annual event since.

Rogers City Chamber of Commerce Vice President Karen Spens said the Nautical City Festival’s mission is the same as when it first started.

“The festival committee is committed to providing a safe, fun festival for all ages in efforts to bring additional people and funds to our community all while building lasting memories,” Spens said.

The Nautical City Festival has always been a highly anticipated event because of the variety of events the festival hosts, especially the bands.

In the fall, Rogers City hosts the annual Old Presque Isle Lighthouse Pumpkin Stroll. Eventgoers start at the Presque Isle Harbor and walk along a trail lined with POSEN pumpkins, spooky decorations, and people dressed as Posen, famous for its annual Posen Potato Festival, witches, ghouls, and other spooky creatures until they comes to life at the beginning of the harvest months as reach the Old Presque Isle Lighthouse. local farmers get time to relax and enjoy the company of their neighbors.

The notable Posen Potato Festival is a long-held tradition in Northeast Michigan, tracing its history back for decades. Known for its potato farmers and rich Polish history, Posen celebrates the harvest season each September with polka dancing, food vendors, an exciting bump-n-run, and more.

Posen Chamber of Commerce President, Andrea Konwinski, said that the Posen Potato Festival is an important time of year because it celebrates the history of Posen and gives people an opportunity to connect.

“The festival is for the local people to get together and have a good time,” Konwinski said.

Konwinski also said that the Posen Potato Festival is unique in that the festival has both a polka and country pavilion.

“There are a variety of things to do,” Konwinski said.

Festivals, Fairs and Fun in Montmorency County

BY SHELL HOFFMAN Special to the News Counties throughout Michigan are bustling in the warmer months with carnivals, festivals, as well as day and evening outdoor entertainment.

When it comes to special events, Montmorency County does not disappoint, as there are a plethora of events, large and small for people to enjoy.

In late September, Briley Township park plays host to the annual Atlanta Area Elk Festival. The three-day long event starts on Friday afternoon with the annual Elk Festival Parade. The weekend continues with two stages that showcase local music and entertainment, kids games, numerous food vendors, as well as arts and crafts sales.

Don’t miss the beds careening down the street at the annual bed races and be sure to check out the chainsaw carving competition. Be involved and enter your furry friend into the pet parade or show off your aim at the annual cornhole tournament. There’s something for everyone.

Atlanta is home to the Montmorency County 4-H fair, which is slated for July 20-25 this summer.

Witness local 4-H members showing off their prized farm animals at auction to the highest bidders and there are many other community exhibits to enjoy and learn about.

The carnival games and midway rides are fun for people of all ages and there are sweet smells of cotton candy and corn dogs filling the air, bringing back childhood memories, as the children make their own memories to carry with them into adulthood.

The bandstands also offer the excitement of a horse pull, bump and runs, and demolition derbies. Bring the family and enjoy the day at the fair.

Sponsored by the VFW Post 2356, VJ Day in Hillman is August 8 this year. This year is the 81st anniversary celebration of the end of World War II. A parade starts off the day on Saturday and the weekend festivities include a car show, live music, local crafters and vendors, a 5K run/walk and horse and carriage rides.

The VFW is also sponsoring breakfast on Saturday.

Also in Hillman is the Brush Creek Mill. Beginning in March, Brush Creek has weekend activities throughout the year including local artist showings, craft sales, Applefest, and antique shows. It also sponsors a children’ s Christmas party and music at the mill on the third Friday of each month.

Hillman also offers car shows and horseshoe tournaments open to the public throughout the summer.

Timberfest in Lewiston is the second weekend of August every year. The festival includes live music

nightly with food vendors and craft shows throughout the day.

Become engrossed in the skills and abilities of chainsaw carvers as they produce amazing sculptures from a block of wood using only a chainsaw.

There is a 5K run and a 3-on-3 basketball tournament available for people who want activities more demanding.

Summers in Lewiston also offer music in the park on Thursdays and farmers market every Saturday.

The area of Montmorency County provides festivals and activities year round for the entire family.

The natural beauty and resources of Montmorency County

BY SHELL HOFFMAN Special to the News From Lewiston, to Atlanta, to Hillman and all the towns in between, Montmorency County offers a lot to do than just appreciate the quaint villages snuggled within the beauty of Northeast Michigan.

Although Montmorency County is far from being a large population center, the area is thriving with things to do all year long.

The numerous lakes scattered throughout Montmorency County offer a plethora of activities to enjoy year round.

Clear Lake, Avalon Lake and Ess Lake offer pristine blue water for family activities, while other county lakes such as Grass Lake, Rush Lake and Fletcher’s Pond provide prime fishing for bass, pike, perch and crappie.

If canoing and kayaking is something you find enjoyable and exciting, spend some time exploring the local fauna and flora as you relax and paddle your way down the Thunder Bay River, where you can appreciate the northern wilderness in all its splendor.

Swimming and boating are also favorite water activities in Montmorency County and a great way to explore the beautiful clean and clear lakes. The blue water of Twin Lakes in Lewiston is a local favorite for fun and relaxation along with hiking and picnicking.

Montmorency County is a great way to unwind and enjoy all the outdoors the area has to offer.

If the art of chasing a tiny white ball and shouting at trees is in your wheelhouse, the area is home to three primary golf courses. Elk Ridge, Fountains Course at Garland, and the Thunder Bay Resort. All three courses offer nine or18 holes for play, as well as putting greens, driving ranges, and clubhouses that include bars and restaurants .

Albert Township Park, in Lewiston, also provides outdoor activities for the athletes in the family. The park has available tennis courts and a disc golf course with a dog friendly picnic area and walking path.

As the season changes to cooler weather wild game hunting in Montmorency County brings hunters from near and far. The state land throughout the area is home to a large population of deer, elk, bear, turkey, rabbits, and numerous other game birds.

With the snowfall comes the thrill of plowing through the powder down hundreds of miles of well groomed snowmobile trails that interconnect across the county.

These trails allow riders a first hand view of the snow covered wilderness, experiencing up close the majestic woodlands.

For snow lovers who prefer a slower pace, snowshoeing and cross country skiing are also a well loved outdoor winter activity. Gliding through the mesmerizing white snow as the countryside and forest trails reveal the splendor of northern Michigan.

Ice fishing in Montmorency County is of the all time favorite winter sports activities in this area.

Fishermen from all around the state indulge in the tipup and shanty life of ice fishing. With all of the lakes in the area available for ice fishing, Fletcher’s Floodwaters is the most notable.

If you are not in possession of an ice fishing shanty, fear not. Jack’s Landing provides heated structures with benches for sitting and a cleared ice hole for fishing.

The area around your shanty also has plenty of space to set up tip-ups outside for a day filled with fish tales and fun fishing on the ice.

Montmorency county offers a wide variety of things to do for every season. Come and experience all this area has to offer year round.

CAMPING Enjoy camping at Negwegon State Park for rustic campers, and Harrisville State Park for a modern camping experience.

Negwegon State Park is a rustic, undeveloped area popular with birdwatchers, hikers, backcountry campers, hunters, and beachgoers, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The 4,000 acre park features eight miles of Lake Huron lakeshore, including one mile of beautiful sandy beach.

Home to a mixture of lowland areas, small ridges and pockets of open meadows, with a mix of mature pine, hardwood and aspen forest, the park is rich in unique plant species and wildlife, including bald eagles, Pitcher’s thistle, Blanding’s turtles and more.

Negwegon is also home to a designated dark sky preserve.

Harrisville State Park is home to a day-use area nestled in a stand of pine and cedar trees, a modern campground, a designated swim beach, trails, overnight

lodging options and more. Established in 1921, it is one of Michigan’s oldest state parks, according to the DNR. HISTORY Visit the Old Bailey Schoolhouse and Sturgeon Point Lighthouse for unique history and a stroll along the beach. Climb to the top of the lighthouse for a small fee and great views. The schoolhouse and lighthouse are a short walk from each other.

The Harrisville Train depot was built in 1901 according to Friends of the Harrisville Train Depot. It is one of few remaining in the northern Lower Peninsula. The depot is not open for public access inside, but is available for outside photos and is located along the Harrisville Heritage Route Trail.

HIKING Hike to the Au Sable Scenic River Highbanks Overlook, 100 feet above the beautiful Au Sable National Scenic River, according to the U.S. Forest Service. After traversing down a short, level, gravel path, visitors can enjoy a view of the river and surrounding forest. More adventurous visitors or anglers can walk down to the river using the staircase. Be it spring, summer or fall, bird-watching is an excellent activity for this area, with visitors spotting many varieties of waterfowl, along with King Fishers, according to the National Forest Service Visit the Lumberman’s Monument for a hike or to learn about the history of the lumber industry in Alcona at the Visitor Center.

The 14-foot Lumberman’s Monument stands on a high bank with the Au Sable River providing a scenic backdrop, the U.S. Forest Service website states. Climb through a log jam, use a peavey, cut a wooden cookie with a cross-cut saw, and learn about the life of a lumberjack through video and displays. Hike the stairway down to the wanigan, a loggers floating kitchen, or take the short trail to the dune observation deck. Enjoy a Kid’s Day program or take a guided nature hike on the Forest Discovery Trail.

Hubbard Lake Nature Preserve is an 80-acre wooded property that includes a mile and half of trails for hiking and wildlife viewing providing year-round recreational opportunities to local residents and visitors.

LAKES, RIVERS, AND WATER ACTIVITIES Harrisville Harbor offers loads of amenities. Enjoy a season of social events for boaters – from dock parties to barbecues, and outdoor concerts on Wednesday nights.

The harbor is within close proximity of quaint downtown Harrisville.

Canoes, tubes, kayaks, rafts and rowboats are available at Alcona Canoe Rental and Campground. Come take a raft trip on the wild and scenic Au Sable River. Family trips from two to five hours and overnight excursions.

Camping, laundry, hot showers, cabins and camp store. Four cabins are available for rent (rustic wooden structures) that sleep up to four people. Open Harrisville State Park has a designated swim beach on the shores of Lake Huron for those looking for a beach day.

Offering public fishing, Cedarbrook Trout Farm was licensed as Michigan’s first trout farm over 75 years ago. This historic, family-run hatchery has remained in operation still today, rearing Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, and native Brook Trout. For a fee, visitors can catch fish; with the option of taking home a fish for dinner.

RESTAURANTS AND SHOPS Alcona Brew Haus serves upscale comfort food in a relaxing atmosphere. Offering a fine selection of artisan house-made beer, along with wine, bourbon, tequila, and a full bar. Alcona Brew Haus makes their own pizza dough and smokes their own meats, as well as burgers made fresh hand-pattied to order. Alcona Brew Haus does not prepare any foods containing tree nuts, peanuts, shellfish nor sesame. Many vegan and allergenfriendly options are available.

Alcona Coffee Co. is a unique blend of coffee shop and carry-out delicatessen, featuring their own blends of coffee served hot, iced, or by the pound in whole

bean. They always have a pot of freshly brewed coffee on, as well as great espressos, cappuccinos, lattes, chai and other specialty coffee and tea drinks. The deli serves up such house-made specialties as corned beef, pulled pork, pastrami, and a variety of ever-changing specials.
