Con đường Thiên Lý (hay còn gọi là đường Cái Quan) Số 121 đường Thiên Lý tại Hà Nội là nơi ngôi trường dạy mỹ thuật đầu tiên của Việt Nam được xây dựng vào năm 1925.

Trải qua nhiều lần đổi tên, tuyến đường này vẫn là trục giao thông huyết mạch có từ thời cổ đại, mà một phần của nó ngày nay trở thành Quốc lộ 1A – con đường dài hơn 2.300 km nối liền Hà Nội với Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh, đi qua Huế, Đà Nẵng, Nha Trang và nhiều vùng đất lịch sử khác.

Từ thời trung đại, đây là tuyến đường nối liền các kinh đô (Thăng Long – nay là Hà Nội, và sau đó là Huế) với các tỉnh phía Nam. Khi ấy, con đường mang tên Đường Thiên Lý – hay đường Cái Quan, đường Quan lộ nghĩa là “đại lộ của các quan lại”, ghi dấu hành trình của các vị quan qua nhiều thế kỷ trên đường tuần du, thi hành công vụ để tới thăm những ngôi làng xa xôi và hẻo lánh nhất. Địa danh lịch sử này đã chứng kiến sự khởi đầu của một kỷ nguyên nghệ thuật mới tại Việt Nam. Nền giáo dục đa văn hóa xuất sắc từng được thiết lập nơi đây hướng tới mục tiêu xây dựng đội ngũ giảng viên có trình độ cao cho từng cơ sở đào tạo. Đây chính là nền tảng hình thành nên Phong trào Đổi mới của Nghệ thuật Hiện đại Việt Nam. “ Ngày hôm nay, Prix de la Route Mandarine (Giải thưởng Con đường Thiên Lý) dành cho sinh viên các trường mỹ thuật Việt Nam trên mọi tỉnh thành. Giải thưởng trao tặng cho hai người thắng cuộc chiếc chìa khoá tiếp cận cơ chế vận hành của các hội chợ và triển lãm nghệ thuật quốc tế, đồng thời khám phá thế giới nghệ thuật đương đại tại Paris. Prix de la route Mandarine là lời kêu gọi đến mỗi nghệ sĩ trẻ Việt Nam: hãy lên đường và vượt qua chính mình trên con đường sáng tạo nghệ thuật.”

The Mandarin Road In 1925, Vietnam’s first official school dedicated to teaching fine arts was established at 121 Mandarine Road in Hanoi. Although this road has changed names several times, its route dates back to ancient times and is now known as Quốc lộ 1, or National Highway 1A. It is the historic road that crosses Vietnam from north to south, connecting Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, passing through Hue, Da Nang, Nha Trang, etc., and stretching over 2,300 km. Since medieval times, this main road has connected the imperial capital (Thang Long, now Hanoi, then Hue) to the southern provinces. Then called Đường Cái Quan, the “great road of the mandarins,” it owes its name to the many mandarins in charge of imperial administration who used it for centuries. Civil servants and scholars used this route to visit the most remote villages.

This historic site bears witness to the beginning of a new artistic era for Vietnam. The multicultural training of excellence that was offered was intended to provide each institution with highly qualified teachers. It would be at the origin of the revival of modern Vietnamese art.

Prix de la route Mandarine Một bước tiến vào thị trường nghệ thuật quốc tế An Immersion into the International Art Market

Hà Nội, ngày 7/1/25 – Thành lập một giải thưởng nhằm hỗ trợ thế hệ nghệ sĩ đương đại trẻ Việt Nam - Tại giảng đường Trường đại học Khoa học tự nhiên và xã hội Hà Nội, cùng với sự hiện diện của mười hai hậu duệ đại diện cho hai hiệu trưởng đầu tiên của Trường Mỹ thuật Đông Dương: Victor Tardieu (1925-1937) và Evariste Jonchère (1938-1945), cho các giáo sư: Jacques Lebas và Nam Sơn; cũng như các học trò của trường: Lê Phổ, Trịnh Hữu Ngọc, Mai Trung Thứ, và Vũ Cao Đàm, chuyên gia Charlotte Aguttes-Reynier đã chính thức công bố dự án thành lập giải thưởng của mình.

Hanoi, 7/1/2025 – Creation of a prize dedicated to supporting Vietnam’s young contemporary scene - In the amphitheatre of Hanoi’s University of Natural and Social Sciences, surrounded by twelve beneficiaries representing the School’s first two directors, Victor Tardieu (1925-1937) and Evariste Jonchère (1938-1945), professors Jacques Lebas and Nam Sơn, and students Lê Phổ, Trịnh Hữu Ngọc, Mai Trung Thứ and Vũ Cao Đàm, expert Charlotte Aguttes-Reynier announced her plan to create a Prize.

Nhân dịp kỷ niệm 100 năm ra đời chương trình đào tạo mỹ thuật đầu tiên tại Việt Nam, do Victor Tardieu khởi xướng cùng Trường Cao đẳng Mỹ thuật Đông Dương, vào tháng 1 năm 2025 tại Hà Nội, chuyên gia Charlotte Aguttes-Reynier đã sáng lập một Giải thưởng nhằm hỗ trợ và khuyến khích sáng tạo nghệ thuật tại Việt Nam. Vào ngày 7 tháng 1 năm 2026 tới đây, Prix de la route Mandarine (Giải thưởng con đường Thiên Lý) sẽ lần đầu tiên được trao tặng cho hai người thắng cuộc.

To mark the centenary of the creation of the first fine arts training program in Vietnam, initiated by Victor Tardieu with the Indochina School of Fine Arts, on January 7, 2025 in Hanoi, expert Charlotte Aguttes-Reynier created a prize dedicated to supporting artistic creativity in Vietnam. On January 7, 2026, the Prix de la route Mandarine will be awarded for the first time to two winners.

Giải thưởng dành cho mọi sinh viên chuyên ngành mỹ thuật, đang theo học tại các trường nghệ thuật ở Việt Nam vào tháng 9 năm 2025, cho niên khóa 2025-2026, với mục tiêu tạo điều kiện để họ có những bước khởi đầu trên thị trường nghệ thuật quốc tế. Sáng kiến này sẽ mang đến cho hai thí sinh cơ hội trưng bày các tác phẩm đoạt giải tại Pháp, ở Neuilly-sur-Seine (Paris). Triển lãm dự kiến được tổ chức vào đầu tháng 4, một trong hai thời điểm thường niên mà Paris dành để tôn vinh nghệ thuật đương đại.

Với tấm vé máy bay khứ hồi được tài trợ, hai người đoạt giải sẽ có mặt tại Paris để tham dự lễ khai mạc triển lãm các tác phẩm của mình. Họ cũng sẽ được tham gia vào một chương trình nghệ thuật đa dạng, bao gồm các buổi gặp gỡ với những nhân vật trong giới nghệ thuật, các chuyến tham quan bảo tàng, những địa điểm không thể bỏ qua cũng như các triển lãm và hội chợ nghệ thuật nổi bật tại Paris được diễn ra cùng thời điểm. Ngoài ra, một khoản tiền trị giá 1.000 € sẽ được trao cho mỗi người nhằm hỗ trợ cho chuyến lưu trú.

This Prize is open to any art student enrolled in an art school in Vietnam in September 2025 for the academic year 2025-2026, and is designed to give them their first taste of the international art market. This initiative offers the two prizewinners the opportunity to each exhibit the winning work in France, in Neuilly-sur-Seine (Paris). The exhibition will take place in early April, during one of the two annual Parisian celebrations of contemporary art. The first two winners will receive a free plane ticket to attend the opening of the exhibition of their work in Paris. They will also be able to take advantage of an artistic program including meetings with market players, visits to museums and unmissable venues such as current Parisian exhibitions and fairs.

An envelope of €1,000 will be dedicated to supporting each participant’s stay.

Bà Charlotte Aguttes-Reynier là chuyên gia về nghệ thuật hiện đại, đặc biệt là về nghệ thuật hiện đại Việt Nam thế kỷ XX. Bà làm việc tại nhà đấu giá Aguttes – một trong những nhà đấu giá hàng đầu của Pháp – nơi bà hiện giữ cương vị Phó Giám đốc và Trưởng bộ phận Mỹ thuật & Nghệ thuật châu Á, kể từ năm 1996.

Bà bắt đầu sự nghiệp trong lĩnh vực nghệ thuật Ấn tượng và Hiện đại, khoảng thời gian đó đã giúp bà rèn luyện khả năng thẩm định và phương pháp nghiên cứu học thuật. Từ năm 2014, bà chuyên sâu vào nghệ thuật hiện đại châu Á, đóng vai trò quan trọng trong việc tôn vinh các nghệ sĩ được đào tạo tại Trường Cao đẳng Mỹ thuật Đông Dương và khẳng định vị thế của họ trên thị trường nghệ thuật quốc tế. Cùng với Aguttes, mỗi năm bà đều phát hiện và giới thiệu nhiều tác phẩm từng bị lãng quên.

Từ năm 2019, bà giữ cương vị Chủ tịch Hiệp hội các Nghệ sĩ châu Á tại Paris, và năm 2023, bà xuất bản tác phẩm L’art moderne en Indochine, một ấn phẩmđược viết bằng ba ngôn ngữ, thành quả của “nhiều năm nghiên cứu và thực hành chuyên môn.

Sự nghiệp của bà là sự kết hợp hài hòa giữa chuyên môn thẩm định, xuất bản học thuật và niềm đam mê văn hóa.

Charlotte Aguttes-Reynier is an expert in modern art, specializing in 20 th century Vietnamese modern art.

Since 1996, she has worked at Aguttes, one of France’s leading auction houses, where she is associate director and head of the Fine Arts & Asian Arts department.

She began her career in the world of Impressionist and modern art, an apprenticeship that trained her eye and introduced her to academic and scientific work. In 2014, she specialized in modern Asian art and actively contributed to highlighting and promoting artists trained at the Indochina School of Fine Arts on the international scene. Her role at Aguttes allows her to reveal many forgotten works each year.

Since 2019, she has been president of the Asian Artists Association in Paris, and in 2023 she published L’art moderne en Indochine (“Modern Art in Indochina”), a trilingual work that is the fruit of several years of research and expertise.

Her career combines expertise, academic publishing, and cultural engagement.

HÀN NGỌC VŨ Nhà sưu tầm nghệ thuật Việt Nam Vietnamese collector

Ông Hàn Ngọc Vũ hiện là Tổng Giám đốc Ngân hàng Quốc tế Việt Nam (VIB), ông giữ cương vị này trong suốt 19 năm kể từ năm 2006, trừ khoảng thời gian 5 năm khi ông được bầu làm Chủ tịch Hội đồng Quản trị. Ông cũng là nhà sáng lập A&V Art Collection, A&V Foundation và đồng sáng lập Vietnam Silicon Valley (VSVA - Chương trình Tăng tốc Khởi nghiệp).

Với hơn 35 năm kinh nghiệm trong lĩnh vực ngân hàng và tài chính, ông từng giữ nhiều vị trí lãnh đạo tại các tổ chức tài chính quốc tế như Citi, Calyon và Crédit Lyonnais. Ông cũng từng là Chủ tịch Hội đồng Quản trị Cornerstone Corporation và thành viên Hội đồng Quản trị của Bảo hiểm Bưu điện (PTI).

Thông qua VSVA, ông tích cực hỗ trợ sự phát triển của hệ sinh thái khởi nghiệp Việt Nam với vai trò huấn luyện viên, cố vấn và nhà đầu tư, như một cách đóng góp cho thế hệ doanh nhân trẻ.

Với đam mê sưu tầm từ thuở nhỏ, ông từng sưu tầm tem, tiền xu, tiền giấy, đồng hồ, hộp nhạc, các tác phẩm điêu khắc và gần đây là các tác phẩm nghệ thuật Việt Nam. Thông qua A&V Art Collection và A&V Foundation, ông không chỉ hướng tới việc sưu tầm nghệ thuật mà còn mong muốn truyền cảm hứng cho thế hệ trẻ trong việc học tập, bảo tồn và gìn giữ di sản lịch sử – văn hóa Việt Nam. Ông có bằng MBA của Trường Kinh doanh Solvay (Đại học Tự do Bruxelles, Bỉ), từng được đào tạo về Lãnh đạo và Điều hành tại Harvard Business School, Lịch sử Nghệ thuật tại National Gallery London, và Định giá Nghệ thuật tại Sotheby’s.

Han Ngoc Vu has been the CEO of Vietnam International Bank (VIB) since 2006 and holds the position during the last 19 years except for a 5-year period when he was elected as the Chairman of the Bank. He is also the founder of A&V Art Collection, A&V Foundation and co-founder of Vietnam Silicon Valley Accelerator (VSVA).

Vu has 35 years of banking and finance experience, in both executive leadership and corporate governance areas, being active with global financial institutions and local organizations as well. Before becoming the CEO of VIB, he was in leadership teams at Citi, Calyon, and Credit Lyonnais. Vu also worked as Chairman the Board of property developer Cornerstone Corporation, and served in the Board of Directors of Post and Telecom Insurance (PTI)…

Together with VSVA, he has been actively supporting the development of startup eco-system in Vietnam in the roles of coach, mentor, angel investor as a way of give-back to younger generation of enterpreuners.

Vu has been a passionate collector since his childhood as well, from stamps, coins, notes, clocks, musical boxes, sculptures and lately Vietnamese artworks. As an art collector and promoter, Vu has spent a fair large amount of efforts for facilitating the development of art collection eco-system via his massive network. His foundation of A&V Art Collection and A&V Foundation is not only for art collecting, but also aiming at inspiring the younger generation to study and to preserve Vietnamese historical and cultural heritage.

Vu obtained his MBA from Solvay Business School (Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium), was trained in Executive Leadership with Harvard Business School in Boston, in Art History by National Gallery London, in Art Valuation by Sotheby’s.

Là một triết gia, giảng viên và nhà xuất bản, ông từng điều hành nhiều tổ chức văn hóa và xã hội trước khi sáng lập Lemma Press, nhà xuất bản từng đoạt Giải thưởng Aleksandr Nevskij của Nga nhờ công trình nghiên cứu về những bản vẽ chưa từng được công bố của Dostoyevsky.

Là chắt trai của Victor Tardieu, ông rất chú trọng cách tiếp cận nhân văn trong nghệ thuật của người sáng lập Trường Cao đẳng Mỹ thuật Đông Dương — một quan niệm nghệ thuật mà việc sáng tạo luôn gắn liền với sự khiêm nhường, tôn trọng và lao động bền bỉ.

Là con trai trưởng của Alix Turolla-Tardieu, ông là cháu ngoại của nhà thơ Jean Tardieu. Ông đã gắn bó và chia sẻ một phần quan trọng trong cuộc đời với ông ngoại của mình.

A philosopher, teacher and publisher, he ran several social and cultural establishments before founding Lemma Press, a publishing house that won the Russian Aleksandr Nevskij Prize for a book on Dostoyevsky’s unpublished drawings.

Great-grandson of Victor Tardieu, he emphasizes the humanist approach to art of the founder of the Indochina School of Fine Arts, an art that can only be achieved through humility, respect and hard work.

Alix Turolla-Tardieu’s eldest son, the poet Jean Tardieu, with whom he shared a significant part of his life, is therefore his grandfather.

“This spirit of respect between men and authenticity in artistic research is contagious, because it is transmitted from one generation to the next, and beneficial, because it allows, through art, to weave a link between men whatever the outcome of history.”

Năm 2011, ông sáng lập công ty tổ chức sự kiện văn hóa Culture Squad Communication và đảm nhiệm vai trò giám đốc nghệ thuật của Liên hoan Photo Saint-Germain từ năm 2011 đến 2013. Từ tháng 5 năm 2011, ông là Giám tuyển trưởng của Art Paris, sự kiện nghệ thuật hiện đại và đương đại lớn diễn ra vào mùa xuân hàng năm tại Grand Palais (Đại điện), Paris.

Được đào tạo với tư cách là nhà sử học nghệ thuật, đồng thời là nhà tổ chức và giám đốc nghệ thuật cho các sự kiện văn hóa, Guillaume Piens từng làm việc cho FIAC từ năm 2000 đến 2006 và cho Paris Photo, nơi ông giữ vai trò giám đốc từ năm 2008 đến tháng 2 năm 2011. Tại Paris Photo, ông đã phát triển dự án “Eastern Trilogy” (Bộ ba phương Đông), lần lượt mời Nhật Bản (2008), các Tiểu vương quốc Ả Rập và Iran (2009), cùng Trung Âu (2010) làm khách mời danh dự.

Trained as an art historian, and an organizer and artistic director of cultural events, Guillaume Piens has worked, among others, for FIAC from 2000 to 2006 and for Paris Photo, which he directed from 2008 to February 2011. For Paris Photo, he developed an “Eastern Trilogy,” inviting Japan in 2008, the Arab world and Iran in 2009, and Central Europe in 2010.

In 2011, he founded his own cultural production agency, Culture Squad Communication. He was the artistic director of the Photo Saint-Germain festival from 2011 to 2013. Since May 2011, he has been the general curator of Art Paris, the major springtime event for modern and contemporary art at the Grand Palais.

ALEXANDRE ELIABA Les Amis des beaux-arts de Paris

Ở tuổi 30, Alexandre Eliaba thuộc về một thế hệ trẻ những người say mê nghệ thuật đương đại. Cảm quan nghệ thuật của anh được khơi dậy từ việc tiếp xúc với các bậc thầy hội họa Ý thế kỷ XIV và XV, đặc biệt là Andrea Mantegna, trước khi lấn sân sang hội họa đương đại và rộng hơn nữa là sáng tác của các nghệ sĩ trẻ.

Những cuộc gặp gỡ đầu tiên của anh với các nghệ sĩ diễn ra tại Trường Beaux-Arts de Paris (Trường Mỹ thuật Paris), nơi anh khám phá ngôi trường và các xưởng sáng tác, giúp anh sở hữu tác phẩm nghệ thuật đầu tiên vào năm 2021. Đó là điểm khởi đầu cho bộ sưu tập mang tên “Collection 95” dành riêng cho các nghệ sĩ mới nổi. Alexandre đặc biệt quan tâm đến việc tìm hiểu hành trình sáng tác và thế giới quan của từng nghệ sĩ. Với niềm ham học hỏi, anh rất thích gặp gỡ trực tiếp các nghệ sĩ tại xưởng vẽ của họ.

At 30 years old, Alexandre Eliaba is part of a new generation of contemporary art enthusiasts. His artistic sensibility was awakened by the Italian masters of the 14 th and 15th centuries, particularly Andrea Mantegna, and now extends to contemporary painting and, more broadly, to young artists.

His first encounters with artists took place at the BeauxArts in Paris, where he discovered the school and its studios, leading him to acquire his first work in 2021.

This was the starting point for a collection, named “Collection 95,” dedicated to emerging artists. Above all, Alexandre seeks to understand each artist’s approach and universe. Curious by nature, he prefers to meet artists in their studios.

His commitment is also reflected institutionally: a member of the Friends of the Beaux-Arts de Paris since 2023, he was elected administrator in 2024. Recently, he was entrusted with the responsibility of founding and leading the “Collectif 35.” This group was designed to bring together young members and stimulate discussion around contemporary creation.

At the same time, Alexandre has been working as a management controller in the industrial sector since 2020. Art is a passion for him, an escape from a demanding professional world.

Trong giai đoạn 2004–2015, Hà Mạnh Thắng được biết đến với những bức tranh giàu màu sắc và bút pháp mạnh mẽ, nơi ông đặt quá khứ và di sản văn hóa Việt Nam bên cạnh những hình ảnh thời thượng của văn hóa tiêu dùng đương đại. Dung hòa giữa hiện đại và truyền thống, các tác phẩm mang tính châm biếm của ông khai thác văn hóa và lịch sử xã hội Việt Nam trong bối cảnh những biến chuyển sâu sắc kể từ thời kỳ Đổi Mới.

Từ loạt tác phẩm “Circle of Time” (Vòng tròn thời gian - từ 2016 đến nay), Hà Mạnh Thắng dần chuyển sang ngôn ngữ trừu tượng, với những khám phá mới về hình ảnh, màu sắc và các tầng nghĩa đa lớp thông qua bộ sưu tập cổ vật của riêng mình. Trong năm năm trở lại đây, cảm hứng của ông còn đến từ quan niệm về thiên nhiên trong thơ ca và văn học cổ Việt Nam – Trung Hoa, cũng như từ sự quan sát những biến đổi của cảnh vật và màu sắc thiên nhiên và nội tại.

Sinh năm 1980 tại tỉnh Thái Nguyên, Hà Mạnh Thắng là nghệ sĩ Việt Nam duy nhất được giới thiệu trong ấn phẩm Painting Today (Hội hoạ ngày nay - Phaidon, 2009), bên cạnh các tên tuổi lớn như Gerhard Richter, Neo Rauch và Peter Doig. Tốt nghiệp Trường Đại học Mỹ thuật Hà Nội năm 2004, ông đã tham gia nhiều triển lãm quan trọng trong khu vực và quốc tế, tiêu biểu như: Instruments of Meditation: Works of Art from the Zoltán Bodnár Collection (Budapest, 2011); Connect: Kunstzene Vietnam (Berlin & Stuttgart, 2009); Post Doi Moi: Vietnamese Art After 1990 (Bảo tàng Nghệ thuật Singapore, 2008); và Shared Inspiration – Asian Art Exhibition (Bảo tàng Nghệ thuật Quốc gia Trung Quốc, 2019). From 2004 to 2015, Ha Manh Thang was known for his bold and colorful painterly canvases that juxtapose Vietnam’s past and its rich heritage with fashionable images of consumerist culture. Bridging modernity and tradition, Ha Manh Thang’s satirical paintings examine Vietnam’s culture and social history within the context of the dramatic changes the country has undergone since Doi Moi. From the series «Circle of Time» (2016-present), Ha Manh Thang gradually switched to abstract style, with his discovery about images, colors, and multi-layered meanings through objects in his antique collection. The ideas of nature in old Vietnamese and Chinese poetry and literature, the observation of changes in scenery, color in the landscape and the mindscape have also been his inspirations in the past five years.

Born in 1980 in Thai Nguyen province. He was also the only artist from Vietnam profiled in the Phaidon publication ‘Painting Today’ (2009) alongside acclaimed artists such as Gerhard Richter, Neo Rauch and Peter Doig. Having graduated from the Hanoi Fine Arts University in 2004, Thang has since held a number of notable regional and international exhibitions including Instruments of Meditation: Works of Art from the Zoltán Bodnár Collection, Reök Palace, Budapest, Hungary (2011); Connect: Kunstzene Vietnam, ifa Galleries, Berlin and Stuttgart, Germany (2009); The rain and the small stream presented by Ernst & Young’s Asean Art Outreach program, Singapore (2008); and Post Doi Moi: Vietnamese Art After 1990, Singapore Art Museum (2008) and Shared Inspiration - Asian Art Exhibition, National Art Museum of China (2019).

LÊ HUY TIẾP Nghệ sĩ đương đại Việt Nam Contemporary Vietnamese artist

Lê Huy Tiếp, sinh năm 1950 tại tỉnh Nghệ An, Việt Nam, là một trong những gương mặt tiêu biểu của nghệ thuật đương đại Việt Nam. Ông theo học tại Trường Đại học Mỹ thuật Công nghiệp Hà Nội trước khi tốt nghiệp Cử nhân Mỹ thuật (BFA) năm 1975 tại Trường Đại học Mỹ thuật Công nghiệp Matxcơva, nơi ông tiếp tục chuyên sâu về hội họa tranh tường.

Từ năm 1975 đến năm 2002, ông giảng dạy thiết kế đồ họa và hội họa tranh tường tại các trường đại học mỹ thuật lớn ở Hà Nội, Huế và Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh. Là một nhân vật có ảnh hưởng lớn trong đời sống nghệ thuật Việt Nam, ông từng đảm nhiệm vai trò chuyên gia trong các xưởng in khắc tại Trung tâm Nghệ thuật Đương đại Hà Nội, đồng thời giữ nhiều vị trí quan trọng trong Hội Mỹ thuật Việt Nam, trong đó có Chủ tịch Hội đồng Nghệ thuật và Chủ tịch Hội đồng Đồ họa. Tác phẩm của ông đã được trưng bày tại nhiều quốc gia và có mặt trong nhiều bộ sưu tập tư nhân quốc tế. Ông đã nhận được nhiều giải thưởng nghệ thuật uy tín cấp quốc gia, trong đó có Giải thưởng Nhà nước về Văn học – Nghệ thuật năm 2007, cùng nhiều giải thưởng tại các triển lãm thường niên của Hội Mỹ thuật Việt Nam.

Lê Huy Tiếp, born in 1950 in Nghe An Province, Vietnam, is a prominent figure in Vietnamese contemporary art. He studied at the Hanoi Industrial Art School before earning a BFA in 1975 from the Moscow Industrial Fine Art University, where he later specialized in mural painting. From 1975 to 2002, he taught graphic design and mural painting at major fine art universities in Hanoi, Hue, and Ho Chi Minh City. An influential contributor to Vietnam’s art scene, he served as an expert in printmaking workshops at Hanoi Contemporary Art Center, and held leading roles within the Vietnam Fine Art Association, including Head of the Art Council and Head of the Graphic Art Council. His works have been exhibited internationally and are held in numerous private collections worldwide. He has received many prestigious national awards, including the National Award of Art and Literature in 2007 and many awards in annual exhibitions of Vietnam Fine Art Association.

“The sacred oratory of Annam” depicts the delicate intersection between the sacredness of Western religion and the contemplative beauty of Eastern culture. On a silk background combined with silver leaf technique, the image of an Annamese woman with a veil emerges as a symbol of pure faith. She sits quietly amidst the majestic mountainous landscape. The artwork honors the eternal peace within the Vietnamese soul, opening up a mysterious spiritual space where ancient memories are soothed.

Tác phẩm tái hiện một căn phòng gắn bó với tác giả, nơi cô trải qua một khoảng thời gian sống một mình.

Dù không có sự hiện diện của con người, không gian vẫn không hề trống rỗng. Những méo mó trong hình ảnh phản ánh góc nhìn chủ quan của tác giả, thay vì nhằm tái hiện hiện thực một cách khách quan.

Tác giả không cố che giấu hay làm đẹp những điểm yếu của bản thân, mà lựa chọn đối diện trực tiếp và trung thực với những suy nghĩ của mình.

Trong trạng thái đó, các đồ vật trong phòng như có sự sống, hoạt động và mang cảm xúc tương tự con người.

This work depicts a room that is closely connected to the artist, where she spent a period of time living alone.

Although there is no human presence, the space does not feel empty. The distortions in the image reflect the artist’s subjective way of seeing, rather than an attempt to represent reality objectively.

The artist does not try to hide or beautify her weaknesses, but simply faces her thoughts as they are.

In this state, the objects in the room appear to be alive, acting and carrying emotions similar to those of humans.

Phát triển từ hai chiếc cây cổ thụ khổng lồ, đẹp và bình yên kì lạ, nằm trên một con phố đang bị đổ thuốc độc cho chết để lấy chỗ xây một tòa nhà mới. “Life”/ “Sự sống” ban đầu là một điệu nhảy. Điệu nhảy như là tinh thần mà tôi nhìn thấy trong hai cái cây - khiêu vũ, bất chấp sống hay chết, bất kể điều gì xảy ra với chúng. Sau quá trình dài phát triển nhằm thoát khỏi hình dáng vật chất và thể hiện thuần túy về tinh thần, điệu nhảy không còn gói trong hình hài cụ thể của hai cái cây nữa, mà phát triển thành sự vận động và tinh thần tự do, liên tục biến đổi không ngừng của mọi sự sống trên đời.

Developed from two beautiful ancient trees being poisoned to clear space for construction. “Life” first was a dance – the mighty and carefree spirit I felt when looking at the trees, they lived the best way no matter how the world treated them. However the more I work on the project, the deeper I feel about life. The project develop itself together with my struggle to overcome the limit of reality’s figures and my own habit in art. And it turns into something bigger than a dance – Life – an eternal, free and unlimited changes. Among those, exist our emotions and souls.

My First Love Is the Sea is a sensory diary of my earliest encounter with the ocean—a lifelong sanctuary from the chaos of the world. Using oil and mixed media, I’ve translated the fluttering wonder of childhood into a tactile experience. My goal is for viewers to feel the salt, the chill of the water, and the sun’s warmth. This piece is a tribute to the sea’s profound simplicity, offering a moment of peace to anyone seeking a place where time stands still and the soul feels right.

Thông qua hai tác phẩm, một khai thác hình ảnh chuyển động chồng lớp và ký ức, tác phẩm còn lại sử dụng chiếc cánh như biểu tượng của cái chết, tôi mong muốn mở ra một không gian để người xem suy ngẫm và kết nối cảm xúc với chính mình.

Origination from an unexpected encounter with a swarm of dragonflies, this series of works is my reflection on life and death. Through two works, one exploring layered movement and memory, the other using the wing as a symbol of death, I hope to create a space where viewers can reflect and find emotional connection with themselves.

Hide and Seek comes from my feeling of being lost in the city. Overwhelmed by concrete and noise, I drifted away from nature and from myself. The forest becomes a quiet inner space, where small human figures appear and disappear among the trees, allowing me to reflect on different parts of myself in a playful yet mysterious journey. Using layered silk, watercolor, and pigment, I embrace softness, uncertainty, and the act of reconnecting - with nature and with what has been hiding inside me.

Tác phẩm là cách nhìn nhận tôi về sự liên kết trong mối quan hệ con người.

Tôi chọn chất liệu đất sét, thay vì chất liệu giấy Dó như chủ đích ban đầu vì tôi tin tượng đất sé có tính truyền đạt ý niệm về sự liên kết giữa người và người thân thuộc, hiệu quả hơn cho khan giả. Lấy cảm hứng từ thuyết tri kỷ của triết gia Plato, tôi nặn từng con giống từ một khối với các chi dính liền với nhau, thể hiện những giai đoạn phát triển mối quan hệ của con người. Là những sinh vật mẫn cảm, chúng ta thấy cô đơn, và cảm thấy lẻ loi dù được bao bọc xung quanh bởiµ nhiều người, rồi nhận ra sẽ luôn có những người sẽ xoa dịu nỗi buồn man mác ấy.

The art piece investigates themes of human interaction based on my personal experiences.

I chose ceramic clay sculptures over Do paper because of the visual effectiveness in storytelling. Inspired by Plato’s soulmate theory, I sculpted each figure from a big chunk of clay, with limbs connected to each other, to represent the different phases of human interaction.

As an emotional being, there will be time when one is isolated, then, feel a surge of loneliness coming, despite being surrounded by many, only to later realize there will always be folks who is willing to share your sadness.

“Nghề” là một phim tài liệu kể về những người làm nghề mẫu vẽ nude giấu gia đình. Phim tập trung nói về những mẫu nữ tuổi trung niên.

Lấy bối cảnh ở trường Đại học Mỹ thuật Việt Nam, bộ phim được hình thành trong quá trình tác giả học năm thứ 3 đại học mỹ thuật – năm kết thúc học phần vẽ hình họa. Tác giả mong muốn tìm hiểu lý do tại sao những người mẫu lại cho rằng nghề mẫu là “đáng xấu hổ”, không ai được biết bên ngoài môi trường mỹ thuật.

Bộ phim là khởi đầu cho dự án nghiên cứu về thế hệ người mẫu nude tại Việt Nam đang dần “hết thời” ấy. Tác giả hy vọng bộ phim có thể gợi mở một cái nhìn bao dung và tử tế, và xin dành một lời tri ân dành cho những con người đã âm thầm cống hiến cả cuộc đời mình cho sự trưởng thành của nhiều thế hệ họa sĩ Việt Nam. “A Job” is a documentary film about nude art models who hide their profession from their families. This film focuses on the middle-aged female models.

Set at the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, the film was developed during the artist’s third year of study - the final year of academic figure drawing. Through this work, the artist seeks to understand why these models perceive their profession as “shameful,” to the extent that it must be concealed from society outside the art school.

The film serves as the starting point for a research project on a generation of nude models in Vietnam

Sinh ra trong một gia đình hội họa, tôi lớn lên cùng dòng chảy văn hóa truyền thống Việt Nam qua đình làng, chạm khắc gỗ và đồ cổ. Thực hành nghệ thuật của tôi khai thác ngôn ngữ tạo hình dân gian giàu nhịp điệu, với bố cục ước lệ không tuân theo quy phạm hàn lâm. Qua hội họa, tôi muốn đánh thức những âm hưởng văn hóa vốn dễ bị lãng quên.

Với Vinh Quy Bái Tổ, tôi không tái hiện nghi lễ như một ký ức hoài niệm, mà gợi mở một thế giới sống động, mang tinh thần dân gian và sức sống đương đại.

Born into a family of painters, I grew up immersed in Vietnamese traditional culture through communal houses, wood carvings, and antiques. My practice draws upon a folk visual language rich in rhythm, emotion and symbolic composition, deliberately bypassing academic perspectives. Through my work, I seek to reawaken these often-overlooked cultural echoes. Vinh Quy Bái Tổ reinterprets a traditional ritual not as a mere nostalgic memory, but as a vibrant, living world infused with folk spirit and contemporary vitality.

Tôi áp dụng nó cho mọi sản phẩm mình thực hiện.

I do not assign meaning to my works, for me that is not what they are meant to do. The meaning of a painting is expressed and completed only at the moment it ends.

It’s existence is it’s own reason for being, responding to every necessity that emerges throughout the process of making. I apply this approach to all of my work.

VŨ THÙY DƯƠNG The Hidden Self

“The Hidden Self ” khám phá trạng thái mong manh của sự tồn tại - nỗi đau âm thầm, sự dồn nén cảm xúc và cái tôi bị chôn vùi trong đời sống thường nhật. Tôi sử dụng giấy vàng mã truyền thống của Việt Nam như một chất liệu mang tính ký ức và tâm linh, gắn với sự hy sinh thầm lặng. Tác phẩm đầu dùng gam màu lạnh và nét vẽ tiết chế để diễn tả sự im lặng lạnh lẽo bên ngoài, đối lập với sự quằn quại bên trong. Tác phẩm thứ hai mở dần bằng sắc ấm và lớp màu trong - như một khe cửa ánh sáng. Ở đây, im lặng không phải bình yên, mà là cách con người học cách tồn tại và mạnh mẽ hơn.

“The Hidden Self ” explores the fragile state of being quiet ache, emotional suppression, and the self buried beneath daily life. Through painting and mixed media, I incorporate traditional Vietnamese joss paper as a material of memory, ritual, and silent sacrifice. The first work employs muted tones and restrained gestures to convey cold silence and inner confinement. The second gradually opens through warmer hues and translucent layers, suggesting a subtle passage toward light. Here, silence is not peace, but a form of survival that transforms pain into resilience.

Thực hành của tôi tập trung vào sự tò mò, ấy là biểu hiện chân thật nhất của con người. Tôi trở lại với góc nhìn của một đứa trẻ, nơi ý nghĩa được hình thành bằng sự quan sát hơn là giải thích.

Trong bức tranh này, tôi vẽ mẹ tôi vào những năm 80. Thập niên 1980 đánh dấu sự khởi đầu của thời kỳ Đổi Mới, một giai đoạn chuyển đổi xã hội khi Việt Nam tò mò đón nhận những ý tưởng mới. Tôi quan tâm đến cách nó được trải nghiệm ở cấp độ cá nhân, đặc biệt là thông qua nhận thức của một đứa trẻ.

My practice centers on curiosity, which is the most honest expression of humans. I return myself to a childlike perspective, where meaning is formed slowly through attention rather than explanation.

In this painting, I drew my mother in the 80s. The 1980s marked the beginning of Đổi Mới, a period of social transition when Vietnam gradually opened to new ideas with curiosity. I am interested in how it was experienced on a personal level, especially through the perceptions of a child.
