MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP Hello!

As the new CEO of Agtegra, I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself to those that I have not had the chance to meet, yet. I am excited to get the privilege to lead this talented team and organization, and it’s humbling to see my name next to those that came before me as leaders of a business with such a rich legacy. Growing up on our small farm in southern Iowa, the local co-op meant everything to our operation. We bought all our feed and ingredients there for our hog and cattle operation, did all our agronomy business there and hauled all our grain there. Even our veterinary supplies and livestock show tack were purchased at the local cooperative.

My father and my grandfather both served the local cooperative as board members in my youth. I am a firm believer in the cooperative model, and I am proud of the role we play in the food chain and how we support the communities we operate in.

With the 2022 fiscal year just behind us, I want to thank you on behalf of our 900 team members for giving us the opportunity to service your farm and family. This past fiscal year presented us with plenty of challenges. We had to manage supply chain issues with agronomy products, a significant drought in our West Region and 25% prevent plant in our East Region. Despite these issues, we still had a successful year led by strong performances in our agronomy and feed businesses with increased sales and market share growth for both divisions. While our grain business struggled with the drought conditions last year, our energy business finished strong despite a year with tremendous price volatility created by the RussiaUkraine conflict that roiled world energy markets. We will report our exact earnings at a future date, but I can say we did finish strong and will have a positive number to report at our annual meeting.

With fall upon us, our focus shifts to harvest and what is a good crop across most of the Agtegra trade territory. There are pockets of prevent plant and some areas that have been very dry, but early yields have been better than expected. To handle the large crop, we are finishing a new 1.3-million-bushel bin addition at Mellette, and we have wind damaged grain bins at Highmore, Cresbard and Huron to repair as quickly as we can. We continue to work hard to make sure our grain locations are ready to serve you throughout the harvest season.

As an old grain guy, it is no surprise that fall is my favorite season, and I cannot wait to get started!

In closing, I know you have many places that you can do business, and I appreciate that you choose to patronize Agtegra. Thank you for your business.

SAFETY @ AGTEGRA Understanding the High Potential for Exposure (HPE) Campaign At Agtegra, safety is always a top priority. With an entire division dedicated to ensuring a safe workplace for both employees and our customers, our team is always brainstorming new strategies to address potential hazards before they become an immediate danger.

Since earlier this year, the term “High Potential for Exposure” (HPE) has been used in reference to areas at our locations that could result in a severe incident or injury if an accident would occur.

To help raise awareness and reduce the potential for an incident in HPE areas, Agtegra’s safety team has begun implementing a new campaign at each location.

WHY HPE?

“‘High Potential for Exposure’ (HPE) has become especially important as we look at additional ways to reduce risk around areas that have the highest potential for a significant injury,” said Beth Locken, Director of Safety and Environmental. “By continually having conversations and raising awareness in these areas, we are able to have more employees involved in identifying ways to prevent a significant injury and maintain a healthy work environment.”

CAMPAIGN APPROACH

To aid in identifying HPE areas, the safety division identified six specific topics to focus on throughout the fiscal year. These topics include defensive driving, hazardous energy, liquified gas, mobile equipment, slips, trips and falls and working at height.

Each topic is highlighted for two months at a time, which was kickstarted in August with defensive driving.

One of the first steps in the campaign included distributing posters and stickers on each of the HPE topics to the locations. The stickers, in the shape of badges, are placed near areas where the topic is of concern.

For example, entrances to warehouses might include the mobile equipment badge so that everyone is aware to watch for forklifts once they walk inside.

BEYOND BADGES

But the campaign doesn’t stop at placing badges and posters around HPE areas at locations. For each bimonthly topic, each location/division is also given a bingo card. Each square of the card includes an action item. Once an employee has completed that action item and documented it, the location can mark off the square as completed.

Locations/divisions that complete a “bingo” or “blackout” within the twomonth period will receive a large topic badge to display at their location in addition to prizes for the employees.

By August 2023, locations that complete all six bingo cards, either in the form of “bingos” or “blackouts” will receive extra incentives.

A CULTURE OF SAFETY

The HPE campaign is just one way that Agtegra continues to create a culture of safety for its employees and customers.

“Enhancing a culture of safety is vital to Agtegra’s employees, customers and communities because it empowers employees, improves communication and promotes operational efficiencies by reducing down time created by incidents,” said Locken.

“We owe it to our employees and customers to provide a safe working environment where employees want to come to work every day and a partner who customers want to conduct business with. By enhancing a culture of safety, we are laying the foundation for building a better business."

AGTEGRA AGRICULTURAL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED Eight high school seniors and three current college students from the Agtegra Cooperative territory were named recipients of the 2022 Agtegra Agricultural Scholarship. These scholarships will help fund their post-secondary education for the 20222023 school year.

Two high school recipients from each of Agtegra’s four regions received $500 to be used toward a fulltime undergraduate agricultural degree program at a 2- or 4-year postsecondary institution located in South Dakota or North Dakota.

New this year, the scholarship committee added a collegiate division with plans to award one $1,000 scholarship to a student currently pursuing an agricultural degree in South Dakota or North Dakota.

However, due to the large quantity of exceptional applicants, the committee decided to award three awards.

The scholarship program aims to reward passionate, driven and future-oriented leaders who are willing to meet the high demand of the agriculture industry.

Jeff McLain, Redfield

GET TO KNOW Jeff McLain Sitting behind the steering wheel of a truck is something Agtegra Truck Driver Jeff McLain has been doing since he was a teenager. The Redfield native vividly remembers the first solo truckload he took into town. “I was 14 years old when I hauled my first load of grain to town by myself,” McLain said with a laugh.

After graduating from Northwestern High School in the late 80s, McLain entered the workforce and soon joined Agtegra as a feed truck driver. Over the past 33 years with the cooperative, McLain has worked in a variety of roles, including managing a fertilizer shed, being an applicator, working the front counter, and of course, driving truck.

“I’ve always liked anything to do with agriculture and being able to help customers,” McLain said. “I want to be as efficient as we can for them.”

McLain’s commitment to Agtegra is proven through his years of service and dedication to customers.

While 33 years may seem like a long time to some, to McLain, the time has flown because of the people he gets to work with every day.

“I haven’t not liked coming to work yet. I’ve gotten to work with a lot of good people over the years."

GET TO KNOW Chet Manthei Growing up on a ranch near Faith, Chet Manthei’s agricultural roots run deep. After 40 years in another industry, he was excited to jump back into agriculture by joining Agtegra as a truck driver in 2015.

During his 40-year construction career, Manthei was a part of a variety of projects, including building roads to access wind tower construction sites.

The construction business eventually led Manthei to move to the east side of the river to Wessington Springs in the late 80s, and in 2015, he began working for Agtegra out of the Wolsey location.

“Producers typically request Chet to come back in the future, as they love to work with him,” said Toshia Blubaugh, Agtegra Truck Logistics Coordinator.

“He arrives early with a smile on his face and stays ‘til the job is done with the same smile. He doesn’t mind where he’s sent and is always willing to go the extra mile to help out, no matter what the need is.”

While customers are drawn to his commitment to quality service, he loves the conversations he gets to have with farmers.

MEET THE INTERNS SUMMER 2022

Agtegra’s internship program provides college students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience by working side by side with industry experts while pursuing their post-secondary degrees. From IT to grain marketing, Agtegra First interns can apply their future career interests to real-world situations throughout their summer.

INTERN INSIGHT: Andrew Mairose Agronomy Operations intern Andrew Mairose plans to go back to his family’s farm after graduating with his degree in Agricultural Systems Technology from South Dakota State University. While he already knows his career goals, he still found value in pursuing an Agtegra First internship, as he was able to learn from the cooperative’s perspective of running a business, which he might not have been able to gain from the customer side alone.

“Knowing how Agtegra operates encourages me to continue doing business with them and will give me the understanding of what the supply end of the company is like,” Mairose said. “Overall, I think Agtegra has one of the best intern experiences out there. It’s one of those experiences that you get out of it what you put into it, which is valuable.”

DIRECTOR Spotlight

RICK OSTERDAY

Rick Osterday, along with his wife Sandy, and their two sons and daughters-in-law, Blane and Liz and Clay and Erin, are the fourth and fifth generations to operate their family farm near Java, South Dakota. They raise corn, soybeans, spring wheat and hay, as well as run a registered and commercial cow herd and background feeders.

Being able to do something every day that he’s passionate about and doing it with his two sons is what Osterday finds very rewarding and what he loves most about agriculture.

“You always learn new things daily. Recently, it was how to remove a rotor gear box on a combine,” says Osterday.

Osterday has been active in the governance of a co-op for 27 years.

“I get the privilege of serving on all of Agtegra’s committees, and I thoroughly enjoy being a part of the governance process for our member owners,”

states Osterday. “I have always been a strong supporter of local co-ops and believe in taking an active role in their governance.”

Osterday currently serves as Agtegra’s board president and Bowdle rural fire district president.

His past board service includes Dakotaland Feeds, SD Beef Breeds Council, SD Cattlemen’s Association, SD Shorthorn Association and Land O’ Lakes Executive Council. He also has attended four FCC Services director training classes and annual meetings of Agtegra’s industry partners such as CHS, Land O’ Lakes and CoBank.

The Agtegra board of directors utilizes committees to efficiently discuss key issues and make recommendations to the full board for its review and approval process. For example, the board finance committee is charged with focusing on Agtegra’s financial statements, the cooperative’s annual financial report and independent audit and bringing recommendations to the full board.

Some advice Osterday would offer to someone interested in being more involved within their co-op: there’s no doubt that it takes time, but being a part of an organization like this has been more rewarding to me personally than the time commitment.

Mike Traxinger has been

Travis Antonsen has been

promoted to SVP, Grain Marketing & Rail Logistics.

In this role, Antonsen will lead Agtegra’s Grain Division including driving its origination strategy, leading product lines and overseeing rail logistics.

Antonsen joined Agtegra in 2009 as a Grain Merchandiser.

He has held numerous positions in his 13 years with the company, including Domestic Corn Trader and Director of Origination. Since October, Antonsen has led product line teams as well as the commodity risk committee in addition to his responsibilities as Wheat Product Line Manager.

Antonsen is a graduate of South Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Ag Business.

promoted to SVP and General Counsel, Government Affairs. In this role, Traxinger will lead Agtegra’s legal department, compliance, corporate governance, contractual transactions and public policy and assist with board governance and relations.

Traxinger joined Agtegra in the summer of 2014 as Corporate Attorney and then became General Counsel and Director of Governmental Affairs in 2019, a position he has held until now.

Traxinger is a graduate of Drake University Law School with a J.D. degree and the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Journalism.
