To the Miss America & Miss America’s Teen family and friends,
My vision is to set the stage for the next chapter with the mission that has run through every facet of this brand for decades. A mission embedded within the very essence of our program, “Empowering Women To Lead” through scholarship, community service, personal style, and success, all symbolized by the ‘four points’ of the crown, set upon a foundation of sisterhood.
Miss America & Miss America’s Teen programs have always been invested in creating a strong network of women who make a positive difference in the world. Our programs are foundational in helping to foster the next generation of strong, confident, and compassionate leaders.
Education is one of the most powerful tools we have for empowering young women. By providing opportunity, access, and financial support for quality education, we are helping to break down barriers and open new opportunities for young women to advance.
Community service is a key component of our programs. Encouraging young women to give back to their communities helps them to develop a sense of empathy, compassion, and social responsibility.
Personal style development helps young women to express their individuality, promoting self-confidence, selfexpression, and self-esteem. Personal style is about creating a unique and individual expression of oneself that reflects who you are and how you want to be seen in the world.
Encouraging young women to pursue their dreams, set goals, and work hard to achieve them, instills resilience and determination that will serve them well throughout their lives. Measuring success through accomplishments provides a sense of satisfaction, recognition, and motivation to continue pursuing one’s goals.
Overall, by Empowering Women to Lead we create a brighter, more equitable, and more compassionate future for all. I invite everyone to join me in stepping into the future, going back to the principles upon which this iconic program was built, Scholarship, Service, Style, and Success.
On December 15, 2022, Grace Stanke , representing her home state of Wisconsin, was crowned Miss America 2023, and awarded $50,000 in scholarship. This was the third time Miss Wisconsin has been crowned Miss America in the history of the Organization.
During the competition, Stanke won the talent portion, performing a piece from “Vivaldi’s Summer/Four Seasons – Storm” on her electric violin.
Stanke, who has earned a cumulative total $68,000+ in scholarship assistance through her state and Miss America competitions, will travel the country using her national platform to continue advocating for “Clean Energy – Cleaner Future.” Encouraging worldwide change for clean, zero-carbon emission energy sources, Stanke emphasizes the benefits of nuclear power and seeks to dispel the myths around nuclear energy while inspiring the next generation of female scientists, engineers, and mathematicians.
Stanke will graduate in May 2023 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in nuclear engineering.

Welcome to the 2023 Miss South Dakota and Miss South Dakota Teen Competition. We are thrilled to be back in Brookings and the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center for another 3 years. The South Dakota Scholarship Foundation Board would like to give a special thank you to the local directors. By working together, the state board and local directors continue to carry out the mission of the Miss America Organization and support young women in South Dakota as they prepare themselves for productive adult lives. We also recognize this program would not exist without the continued support of our sponsors and donors. We are thankful for their dedication that allows us to provide scholarship dollars to young women competing to pursue their educational goals.
Our titleholders, Hunter Widvey and Olivia Odenbrett, have represented us well at their respective national competition and during the year as they traveled the state sharing their message and talents. Thank you both for a fantastic year and we wish you the best of everything in your future endeavors.
In closing, we would like to recognize and thank all the Miss and Teen delegates for their hard work and dedication to the program. You are now part of the Miss South Dakota family. Enjoy your experiences this week; cherish the friendships you make; and most importantly, make the world a better place by living the 4 points of the Crown – Style, Success, Scholarship and Service.

In 2015, the South Dakota Scholarship Foundation (SDSF) created an annual award to recognize outstanding volunteers within the Miss South Dakota Family. Nominations are accepted and reviewed by a select committee with the individual(s) honored at the State Competition.
The 2022 Volunteer of the Year was Judy Thies.
For over 25 years, Judy has served as Treasurer for the SDSF – always with a smile and positive attitude. The main duty of the treasurer is to oversee the financial administration and advise the board on the financial status. Not only does she fulfill these duties but is one of the first to step up and help in any other capacity that is needed. She has mentioned “retirement” from the Board for several years, but it is understood that things would not work as smoothly without her in the role. Judy eagerly assists the young ladies in getting their scholarship awards and works closely with board members to pay bills and submit reports as requested. Her positive attitude is priceless in bringing enjoyment to the working relationship. As a volunteer organization that people “choose” to be a part of – Judy makes
the time involved worthwhile. We hope that by recognizing her with this award she knows how much she is valued and appreciated for her dedication and financial expertise. Congrats!
Past recipients include:
2015 Kendal Braa
2016 Garry & Pat Strausser
2017 Brett & Carolyn Knutson Family
2018 Jeauleen Frost
2019 September Kirby
2021 Raymond Peterson
2022 Judy Thies
It was a Diamond Jubilee Week, May 30th through June 4th, 2022, when eighteen sparkling Miss Candidates and twelve shining Teens arrived ready to rehearse, perform, and win the glistening rhinestone crowns of Miss South Dakota and Miss South Dakota’s Outstanding Teen. The Miss Candidates came from every corner of the state, just as all 74 hopeful classes had done before them, and for both the Miss and Teens, it would be an exciting week meeting new people, experiencing Brookings and SDSU’s fine hospitality, and competing together while, at the same time, supporting one another in friendship.
No celebration is complete without special guests, and for the Miss South Dakota Competition, the guest list came easy! Thirty-two forever Miss South Dakotas gathered together to celebrate their years of service, to support the outgoing title-holder, Kaitlin O’Neill, and on Saturday night, welcomed a new “diamond” into their sisterhood. Joining in the celebration, Miss America's Outstanding Teen 2022, Marcelle LeBlanc, helped us wrap up 75 amazing years!
everyone enjoyed over-the-table conversation at the Gala Dinner. Not to outdo Kate Wismer’s fabulous “Diamonds Are Forever” production, a talent extravaganza was held featuring many of the former Miss SDs sharing their individual talents. It was phenomenal! You really had to be there to believe it. As one attendee put it, “That was spectacular… as professional as it gets!” And so it was. Nicely done, Ladies!
Among the other activities on the Forevers’ itinerary: A 75th Anniversary Memorabilia Room filled with competition evening gowns and swimwear, photos, scrapbooks, trophies and, of course, the treasured 4-point “diamond” crown – all provided by the former winners themselves. The general public was invited to meet the returnees at an autograph signing, and
As always, the week’s over-all highlight came with the crowning of Miss South Dakota’s Outstanding Teen and the new Miss South Dakota – Olivia Odenbrett and Hunter Widvey. And now that both ladies have served South Dakota so graciously over the past twelve months, we find it hard to say goodbye but look forward to the opportunities that await the two women who become this year’s judges’ final decision.
Within the first week of becoming Miss South Dakota, Olivia and I decided to go on our first road trip together to watch the Miss North Dakota competition and then continued with our travels to Miss Minnesota the following week! Shortly after, we headed to the Miss Mississippi competition since our very own Forever Miss SD, Callee Bauman Wachter was judging. Olivia’s and my judge from Miss SD, Karen Jones, and friend Buddy Dees were so welcoming! This was one of our favorite trips together, especially due to all of the amazing Southern food!
The Fourth of July weekend was filled with lots of patriotic events! Olivia and I went to Mount Rushmore with our moms to greet tourists. A couple days later, I participated in the Hill City Parade with SoDak Clothing and made a quick trip to Mobridge to sing the National Anthem at their rodeo. On the Fourth of July, I made it back to the Hills for five parades all in one day with the best chaperones, Daryl and Sally Isburg!
Shortly after becoming Miss SD, I drove to Colorado Springs to test for the last level of my US Figure Skating Moves in the Field tests and I passed! I had been working on these since I was eight years old. This made me a United States Figure Skating Gold Medalist! Being Miss South Dakota and a Gold Medalist were both goals of mine for years, so I was excited to achieve both of these within a month of each other.
I frequently traveled across the state for rodeos, recruitment, local competitions, parades, and school visits! My most requested song this year has been the National Anthem! Sharing information about Miss SD and getting to know women across the state has been very rewarding. I enjoyed participating and assisting with every local across the state and befriending all the new local titleholders! It has also been so special visiting K-12 schools across our state and encouraging young people to follow their dreams.
The Sturgis Rally was an awesome experience! Daryl, Sally, a few of their biker friends (who were my security guards at the Rally), and my mom all went together and took in the sights! I kept getting asked if I was the REAL Miss South Dakota or just an impersonator since there were so many actors there!
I thoroughly enjoyed going to Miss America’s Outstanding Teen to cheer on Olivia. It brought back great memories from when I competed at MAOTeen. Olivia rocked it and I am so proud of her. I also met most of my Miss America sisters for the first time and learned valuable information
during orientation. We even got to meet the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders!
The State Fair was one of the best weeks of my life; full of camper living, sweating in the hot temperatures, eating abundant amounts of fair food, and meeting amazing people. I loved emceeing, judging, and singing at various events! I also got to attend several awesome concerts! Thank you Carolyn and Candi for making this an awesome week.
I have enjoyed the opportunity to help fundraise for pediatric cancer patients both in Rapid City and Sioux Falls, as well as visit the Sanford Children’s Hospital to spend time with children battling cancer. One of the best friends I have made this year is Harper, who continues to fight cancer with such strength and courage.
I spent several months as Miss SD working on pediatric cancer legislation. I was blessed to have amazing organizations like the American Childhood Cancer Organization and legislators such as Sen. Johnson, Sen. Castleberry, Sen. Davis, Sen. Foster, and Rep. Drury guide me through this process! Although my bill did not pass through to the very end, it did make it through several hurdles as a first time bill! It passed 13-0 in the House Health and Human Services Committee. I’m grateful for the opportunity to advocate for children with cancer and hope to continue this process in the future.
I have loved going hunting with my dad ever since I was little. I remember going to the Miss SD Pheasant Hunt as MSDOTeen and had so much fun! I couldn’t wait to join lots of these friends again as Miss SD! Going hunting with all of them, Olivia, and our dads was a great time!
A trip to Wisconsin in February? Definitely! Almost half of our Miss America class booked a trip to Wisconsin to celebrate our Miss America at her homecoming! I traveled with Miss Montana from Rapid City to Wisconsin, and we had so much fun! There was a winter storm while we were in
Wisconsin, but Midwest girls know how to handle some snow lol! Between sightseeing, socializing, volunteering, and celebrating, I couldn’t have asked for a better way to celebrate Grace and her being a fantastic representative of our class! I wish I could tell you about all of the other amazing experiences I have had this year, but it would take up this entire program book!
Miss America was a whirlwind! I met up with Miss North Dakota and Miss Minnesota in the Minneapolis airport, and we all flew into New York City together. We were not under the official responsibility of Miss America yet, so a group of us decided to go to a local diner near the airport. Later that night, we went to Radio City Christmas Spectacular and then had dinner on a rooftop overlooking the city. It was such a fun experience!
The next day we visited different locations across New York City. This was a surreal experience for me, as it was my first time in the big city. We started the day at NASDAQ, where Miss America and Shantel Krebs, former Miss America CEO, rang the opening bell. We then went to the 9/11 Memorial. It was emotional being there and seeing the names of everyone who had passed in this act of terrorism. There were lots of armed men and security personnel around us because we were considered a target with Miss America being a national figure at such a significant site.
Later, we went to Battery Park and took photos with the Statue of Liberty in the background. It was fun having tourists come up to us and ask who we were and where we were going! The day ended with a fun excursion to SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, one of the tallest skyscrapers in New York with floors made of mirrors; I took some awesome photos here! To conclude the day, I ate at Shake Shack with several titleholders and just chatted about life. We then began our venture to Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. Our first two days in Connecticut mainly consisted of rehearsals. Thankfully, I was used to this from Miss America’s Teen when I competed back in 2016. I am NOT a dancer, despite years of dance class as a child, so learning the dances was sometimes a challenge for me. We were also kept busy doing several video and photo shoots to thank sponsors.
At night we would go back to our hotel rooms and decompress. I had the best roommate, Jessica Reisinger who is Miss Alaska. She is a medical student and I will be soon, so we bonded over that. We were also both Women in STEM Scholarship Finalists! We didn’t get much sleep throughout the week, so we helped each other stay enthusiastic despite the fatigue! Miss Delaware and Miss Washington were in the room next to us, and there was a door that conjoined our rooms, so we had fun visiting with them. The food that we had for breakfast, lunch, and dinner was amazing! I stayed well nourished and caffeinated while there!
There were two nights of preliminary competition and one final night. I performed my talent, “Bring Him Home” from Les Miserables, on the first night of preliminary competition. It was such an incredible experience to be
on the Miss America stage in front of an audience for the first time. The next morning, I had my private interview with the panelists, which felt weird doing the interview after my talent but also helped me feel warmed up and ready! Since one of my panelists was an Olympic figure skater (one of my childhood idols) and I have been skating since I was four, I was asked several questions about figure skating. The panelists also asked about my goal of becoming a physician, and I always enjoy speaking about this! That night, I competed in evening gown, on-stage question, and social impact initiative pitch. It was so magical getting to walk the Miss America stage in my red Jovani evening gown from Regalia!
The next day, I competed for the Women in STEM Scholarship and answered a question about CRISPR-Cas9 technology and my thought on editing human
genome, and received 3rd place! It was such an honor to have my medical ambitions recognized. I was so at peace during each phase of competition and felt like I gave 100%! I am extremely grateful to all of my friends and family who traveled to Connecticut to cheer me on and to those who cheered from afar. It was an amazing experience that I will never forget.
This year has been my greatest adventure. I remember being Miss South Dakota’s Outstanding Teen in 2016, looking up to my Miss at the time, Julia (Olson) Andela, and wanting to be just like her. On June 4th, 2022, this dream became a reality. The people I have met, the experiences I have had, the growth I have felt, are all immeasurable. This has been the happiest and most rewarding y very special people.

Also, thanks for cutting me slack on the Maid of Honor role this year LOL. Zack: excited to call you my brother-in-law next month! John: Thank you for the many phone calls and pep talks this year; you helped me get through countless drives across the state. It takes a special person to put up with my hectic schedule and love of talking! Mom and Dad: Thank you for supporting my wild dreams and being there eve the way. I am so blessed to have you as my parents.
With appreciation and memories that will last a lifetime, Hunter Oriana Widvey, Miss South Dakota 2022

Welcome to Miss South Dakota 2023! I hope you're as fired up as I am to celebrate the fantastic year we've had with our amazing titleholders and to crown our next winners! As always, it takes a village to continue the traditions of Miss South Dakota from year to year and this year is no exception. I'm inspired by the people who've competed in this organization and by those who continue to give of their time and talents.
I want to thank Kyra Korver Mentele for “igniting” the spark for this year's theme to grow; Hunter and Olivia for shining so brightly this year; all of the entertainers and hosts for making that part of my job oh-so-easy; Dad and the production crew for getting everything done behind the scenes; to the Board, the planning committee and especially to our fearless leader, September Kirby, for putting in countless hours to make sure Miss South Dakota’s light can burn bright for years to come. It’s 2023! We’re back and we’re ready to IGNITE the Night!

Kimberlee McKay's name was announced as the new Miss SD 1995 by Brad Heegel only moments after OJ Simpson was arrested by the LAPD in the famous white bronco chase. That year was the 75th anniversary of the Miss America Pageant, and McKay was one of just seven contestants who voted AGAINST holding the swimsuit competition. Her advocacy platform during her reign was “Gender Equity in Science, Techn ology and Engineering.” After her tenure as Miss SD, Kimberlee attended medical school at the University of South Dakota and OB/GYN Residency at University of Kansas-Wichita. In 2006, she settled in Sioux Falls, SD where she works as an OB/GYN for Avera Medical Group where she is well known for the sound of her high heels as she clicks down the hall towards labor and delivery. In
2016, she was named Clinical Vice-President of the OB/GYN Service Line for Avera Health.
Since then, she dedicates much of her time toward improving maternal and neonatal health across the Avera footprint. She is the administrator of several large federal grants meant to address maternal health care disparity and the necessary policy change to accomplish improved health care for all women during and after pregnancy. She serves on the South Dakota Maternal Mortality review committee and is the part-time Chief Medical Officer for PeriGen, a software company dedicated to serving the nurses and physicians who care for pregnancy. Finally, in her most important role, Kimberlee is the wife to Andrew and mother to Luke, 12, and Maren, 10. She credits the Miss America System for givi ng her scholarships to complete school (Miss America Allman Scholar X 3), the ability to influence and advocate for her patients, and most importantly, the drive to serve her community.

Jess was crowned Miss South Dakota’s Outstanding teen in 2009. Post high school, she attended Auburn University where she majored in mechanical engineering. She attended college on a full-tuition scholarship she was awarded at the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant. You may remember her as the girl who insisted she was going to work for NASA. Jess achieved this goal in 2013, when she interned at NASA Goddard under a former astronaut. Jess was a competitive dancer for over 20 years. She is well versed in many styles including ballet, tap, contemporary, and musical theatre. Jess started choreographing dances when she was 14. Her dances have won top awards all across the country. Jess currently lives in Oklahoma City with her husband, Tom, and their five pets. She currently works for a l ocal MEP design firm as
a licensed Professional Engineer. Jess serves as the social media chair for her local ASHRAE chapter where she started a podcast to highlight the HVAC industry. Jess has always been a space nerd and was crowned Miss Star Trek Universe 2022 in August. She is excited to be back home and serving the Miss South Dakota family in this capacity.
Brad Heegel entered his first pageant (so to speak) in 1975 as an "entertainer" at the Miss Sioux Falls Pageant as a lowly college student. Ray Peterson, longtime producer of the Miss South Dakota Pageant, judged that pageant and was wowed by Brad’s talent; the rest is history. In 1977, he was asked by Ray to be Master of Ceremonies for the Miss South Dakota Pagea nt and continued in that role for many years, his name almost synonymous with the pageant. Brad says he was lucky enough to make Hot Springs his summer home for some 20 years and made lifelong friends in the process. Brad was fortunate to be asked to judge many other state pageants: Washington, Oregon x2, Florida x2, Nevada, Nebraska x2, Montana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Ohio, and Colorado. He picked TWO state title holders who went on to become Miss America - Florida (Leanza
Cornett) and Oregon (Katie Harman). After a hiatus, Brad was back to emcee the Miss South Dakota’s 70th anniversary competition and had a ball with all of his "old" friends (who just happen to be among his BEST friends). After a long and very successful career (40+ years) with Augustana University, Brad retired during the pandemic… deciding one day that "today's the day” and officially retired. He an d his wife Melinda packed up and moved to Spokane, WA, to be near their grandkids where they are constantly busy with the kids’ activities, volunteering at their schools and more (they are specialists in Kindergarten!!!) and rarely miss soccer, cross country, gymnastics or whatever else grade schoolers get involved in. They're members of St. Aloysius Gonzaga Catholic Church where Brad sings in the cho ir, and they travel as much as they can. Brad continues to keep his toes in Augie affairs by leading some alumni tours overseas.

I have always been taught that a different day, a different set of judges, a different outcome, but when my name was called as Miss South Dakota’s Outstanding Teen 2022, I knew everything aligned.
My goal for this year was to get the Miss South Dakota’s Teen organization more recognized across the state. I believe that Hunter and I accomplished that together with numbers growing from 12 - 16! l My year has been filled with appearances to get the title out as much as I possibly could. I traveled over 22,600 miles.
Hunter and I went to three different state competitions within the first couple months of our reign together. I attended one additional state competition recently, seeing my childhood best friend give up her title as Miss Minnesota’s Outstanding Teen. Not only were we princesses together, but we got to spend our year as state titleholders together and competed on the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen stage together.
Nationals was a completely "out of this world" experience! Meeting all of the girls for the first time after weeks of talking to them through snapchat was crazy! It felt like we knew each other for so long but yet it was the first time we met. The week was filled with bonding and hard work, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the lifelong friendships that were formed! My goals were to be myself, do the best I could do, have fun, grow as an individual, and make life long connections. I am proud to say that I achieved all of those goals!
Attending Miss America was another favorite memory! Seeing all of my MAOT friends again after not seeing them for months was the best! We all got to have fun without the stress of being in competition mode, and we were all there to just support our titleholders! Being able to support Hunter on the Miss America stage was something I will never forget. Sitting on that stage and making eye contact while she was walking on stage with her red dress, squeezing Allison’s hand next to me so hard when Hunter was singing, and praying before Hunter went on stage were some of my favorite moments!
“What was your favorite appearance?” I have so many favorites! To name a few, though they would be, Gift of Life Transplant House, Miss Missisippi (Thank you Callee!), the South Dakota State Fair, Miss South Dakota Pheasant Hunt, Late Night Boomin Show, Miss America Homecoming, autographs at Mount Rushmore, and so many more!
Just being Miss South Dakota’s Outstanding Teen will be a memory I will never forget!
Thank you from the deepest part of my heart for this amazing year and opportunity. From watching my older sister compete in a local competition to being in the Princess program, I fell in love with this organization! I won Miss Siouxland’s Outstanding Teen and competed for the first time at the state level last June. And now I am here as the last “outstanding” Miss South Dakota’s Teen.
Thank you to the Miss South Dakota board, especially Kate and Libby. I was a busy teen this year and you always supported and guided me through everything.
This title was a kickstart for my 501c3, Leo’s Legacy, and I am so excited to see where it grows. It has been an honor to share Leo’s story, to raise money for organ transplant patients, and to get more people signed up to be organ donors. Thank you to the Leo’s Legacy Board of Directors for helping me every step of the way, and especially Sally, for letting us share your son’s story.
To my Miss America’s Teen sisters, the last to shout “M A O TEEN!!”, even though many of us have only spent two weeks together, you all feel like childhood friends! I am so excited to see where each of you go in the future. You truly feel like sisters and I love you all, you inspire me everyday, and I can’t wait to see you again.
Hunter, after you were crowned I had no idea how special our journey together would be. I am so grateful that we got to spend those first 3 weeks of our year traveling together. You truly filled the older sister role and will always be my second sister. You were there in the best, worst, happy, sad, annoyed, stressed, and everything in between times. You always made sure to include me, and made me feel welcome. I love our late night calls before big days, and I couldn’t be more grateful to have you be my second half in this Once in a Lifetime year. The connection we have is unmatchable and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Thank you for being my Miss South Dakota.
To my best friends, thank you for keeping me afloat this year. I wouldn’t have made it without you! Thank you for our long calls, and last minute visits to see each other. Thank you for sushi and ice cream runs, and keeping me on track in school. You are such a special part of this journey. Love you all!
To my big brother Noah, thank you for our Wednesday weekly calls! They helped ground me, and made me so happy every week. Sadie, thank you for coming to Texas for MAOT. Knowing that my big sister, the one who got me started in this organization, and my inspiration, was in the audience made my heart glow! I am so lucky to have the most supportive siblings. I love you so very much!
The biggest thank you of all, to my parents. Thank you for being directors of a local Miss America pageant years ago. If it weren’t for that I would not be here today, starting a nonprofit, and spreading the story about how much growth this organization provides to young women. Thank you for being my rock this year! You helped me through all of the good and bad times this year. You helped me get my mind off of things, and taught me to take breaks, but most of all you kept me being ME! There are not enough words to explain how grateful I am to have you both, so thank you! I love you to Heaven and back (times infinity)!
I am grateful for the teen I have become this past year. I have learned so much and I am so happy that I experienced everything possible this year! This organization has always been a part of my life and Miss South Dakota’s Outstanding Teen was a dream come true for me. To say this year has been special is an understatement. This is definitely not a goodbye, it is a see you later, as I hope this is the first step in my Miss America journey! Joining the forever club and signing off for the last time, this is Miss South Dakota’s Outstanding Teen 2022, Olivia Odenbrett.

Each year, we like to feature Forever Miss South Dakotas who are celebrating milestone anniversaries. Because of our 75th anniversary last year, we did not feature those “02’s” so are including them this year along with the “03’s”. After reading, we know you’ll agree we have some pretty impressive Forever Miss South Dakotas!
Sandra Kay Hart Golding has twins, Jesse and Natasha, and eight grandchildren. After graduating from Huron College in South Dakota, she taught English at Flandreau Indian school. She later worked for Joe Foss, Governor of South Dakota, for a year until she was recruited to teach at a new high school in Tucson, Arizona. After marriage, Sandra worked as a research consultant in the telecommunications industry. Today she lives in San Rafael, California and is an avid painter.
Charlean Fuhrman Croxton lives in Carmel, Indiana, a suburb of Indianapolis with her husband of 57 years, Lynn Croxton. They have two children: son Brent and daughter Laura Croxton Larson (Matt) of Decula, Georgia. Laura and Matt have two children: Aiden and Katie. Lynn and Charlean have been spending January and February in Florida since retirement in 2006. They also spend the month of March in Georgia to be near their daughter and family. They love watching their grandchildren play sports. Lynn and Charlean live on a golf course where Lynn plays golf frequently and both enjoy the view. Charlean loves having coffee with her friends, decorating, shopping and Bible study.
After crowning her successor, Janet completed her undergraduate degree at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA, and her MBA degree at the University of California in Los Angeles. During her professional career, she worked as a corporate banker, business school case writer, and management consultant. After the birth of their daughter, Alexandra Hunter Zenoff, Janet focused her efforts on community leadership, fundraising, event planning and board membership for various nonprofit institutions in San Francisco. Janet and her husband David Zenoff have traveled abroad extensively for work and pleasure, and have lived in London, Australia, Switzerland, and other European countries. In 1982, she and David built a chalet in the Swiss Alps where they have spent every summer since that time. Janet makes occasional visits to her home state to see family and friends and is grateful to have lived her early years here in South Dakota.
The Miss South Dakota Pageant opened many new opportunities for Tara Meyerink. As a 19 year old, she flew in an airplane for the first time, saw the ocean, performed on a national stage and on network television, and spoke and played the piano around the country. Because of her skilled piano performance in Atlantic City, Tara was invited to perform with Dino Kartsonakis in “Panorama” at the Grand Old Opry and at the Dove Awards, equivalent to the Grammy Awards in Christian Music. Tara also performed live on the 700 Club and at many other venues throughout the country. Tara married the love of her life, Steve Erickson, in 1983 and they have lived in Platte, SD since then, farming and raising three sons. The Erickson family has added daughters-in-law and two grandchildren that just happen to be the light of their eyes. Tara recently turned 60 and she loves to keep trying new things – like elk hunting. She has been struggling with Long Covid since October of 2020, but is hoping her health improves so she can keep enjoying new adventures.
Leslie has built a career in healthcare administration, becoming a subject matter expert on the employment of physicians and APPs. Her work has spanned the gamut of sourcing, recruiting, and contracting physicians to building and managing their practices and supporting and engaging them in retirement. Leslie’s work in healthcare inspired her to obtain her Spiritual Direction Certificate to support healthcare professionals in their care giving journey through compassionate listening. Leslie and her husband, Mark Schwarting, are celebrating their 27th wedding anniversary this year! Together they have raised three daughters, Corrine (25), Claire (22), and Anna Kathryn (21). They live in Amana, Iowa.
Vanessa Short Bull is an enrolled member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. She was born on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation of South Dakota. She is a direct descendent of Chief Red Cloud, Young Man Afraid of His Horses, Little Wound, and the Ghost Dance leader, Short Bull. Vanessa is a graduate of the University of South Dakota. She has served as the Co-chair for the Native Research Network and was a board member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe Research Review Board and the Susan G Komen for the Cure – SD Affiliate. She was previously a Nike-endoresed fitness athlete for the N7shoe. She currently works for the Department of Defense - Defense Logistics Agency in Philadelphia. She previously worked with the Philadelphia VA Medical system. Vanessa is the former Miss SD USA 2000 and Miss SD 2002, the first woman in South Dakota to garner both titles, and competed at both the Miss USA and Miss America Pageants. She is also the first Native American to win both state titles. Vanessa served as an officer in the US Army Reserve Medical Service Corps and was featured in the American Indian College Fund’s campaign, Have You Seen a Real Indian and in the book, Real Indians.
After passing on the title of Miss South Dakota, Calista moved to Manhattan, KS, to follow a boy who is now her husband of almost nine years. In Manhattan, she started her career as a regisred nurse in the intensive care unit. Calista and her husband, Alex Kringen, moved to Lincoln NE in 2015 and they have called Lincoln home ever since. In 2018, Calista graduated with her Master of Science degree in Nursing Leadership from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and that same year she and Alex welcomed their first child. In 2020 baby number two joined the Kringen family, and in 2022 a baby girl created the Kringen family of five. Calista currently works in the Quality Improvement department at Lincoln Surgical Hospital and she is also completing her clinical rotations for her Family Nurse Practitioner certification. Of all Calista’s accomplishments, having the title of “mom” to Crew, Cal, and Kirby is her favorite.
Wearing the Black Hills Teacher’s College banner, Delores Jerde won the title of Miss South Dakota before a capacity audience at Hot Springs’ Woodward Field. A classical pianist, Delores went on to Atlantic City where she achieved great honors and national recognition being named the one and only Grand Talent Winner at the Miss America Pageant playing Ernst von Dohnani's “Rhapsody in C Major.” As Miss SD, Delores broke existing records by logging in 237 personal appearances and traveling from coast to coast, meeting dignitaries and performing. She was invited back to perform at the 1954 Miss America Pageant, and Western Air Lines presented her with a trip to the Rose Bowl game in Pasadena, CA. While there, she made appearances with the Lawrence Welk Orchestra, Doris Day, and with SD’s very own gift to the movie industry, Mamie Van Doren. Delores graduated from Yale with a MMus degree in Piano, studied piano at the Royal College of Music in London, and earned her PhD in musicology from the University of Texas, Austin. Delores married and moved to Canada an d played with the Manitoba Trio featuring guitarist Jack Glatzer and cellist Klara Belkin, and she also was part of the Glatzer-Keahey Duo. Both groups performed for many years throughout North America and Europe, touring and producing recordings, but Delores would say her proudest achievement is inaugurating a chamber music series, “Ivory Echoes”, in Winnipeg which used historical pianos from the 18th and 19th centuries. For each of the four concerts each season she edited a newly discovered chamber work and, in addition, commissioned a new work. Delores is now retired, lives in Arizona, and has four children and seven grandchildren
Heather has lived in eight U.S. states, three Canadian provinces, Austria and Singapore. She received her Master’s degree in theatre from the University of California, Davis. Now retired, her 40year career included acting, modeling, and voice-over contracts; teaching theatre classes in high schools and community colleges and at the national University of Singapore; setting up a Visitors’ Centre at a new international scientific institute in Austria; working as a casting director and producer/director at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation; directing professional theatre productions in Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary; establishing and directing All Nations Theatre, a multi-cultural young peoples’ theatre company in Calgary; setting up and managing the Canadian Education Centre in the Canadian Embassy in Singapore; and traveling to recruit international students for a community college in Vancouver. Heather is married to “the most wonderful man in the world,” Richard Hankin, and they live in the Garden of Eden – Vancouver, Canada. She and Richard enjoy Scottish country dancing, attend live theatre and symphony concerts, read, gnash their teeth over politics, and try to keep moving with bike riding, ice skating, walking, canoeing, gardening, and fitness classes. They find something to laugh about every day, and best of all, spoil three 20-something grandchildren. Heather has attended several Miss South Dakota Scholarship Competitions, including last year’s 75th Anniversary, and loves meeting the many “Forevers,” pageant staff, volunteers, and contestants whose lives change hourly during the challenging, yet enriching week. (Heather is pictured here with our very first Miss SD, Rosie Ridley ’47)

There is a good chance LaRonda can look at your feet and tell you what shoe you’re wearing and what size it is. For 29 years she and husband , Mark Denkler, have lived in and owned shoe stores in the picturesque town of Delray Beach, Florida. In 2016 they were recognized as the National Footwear Dealer of the Year. Since closing their stores in 2020, LaRonda has taken as clients several US stores and travels to Italy a few times a year to buy and import shoes. Mark is the President of the National Shoe Retailers Association supporting and educating independent footwear retailers. Mark and LaRonda love to travel all over the world and still have many spots on their bucket list. Son, Drew, who is an analyst on Wall Street, married in May, and daughter Amanda, who works in marketing and in film as a makeup artist, got engaged in February. The Denklers agree that happy kids make contented parents!

MIRANDA ALWAYS HAS A VERY KIND HEART AND A HAPPY INFECTIOUS SMILE, SHE FOLLOWED HER DREAMS AND VENTURED FAR, IN JUST A LITTLE WHILE.
SOMEDAY SHE WOULD BE A PRINCESS AND BRING JOYFULNESS TO ALL, AND SOON HER DREAM OF MISS AMERICA WAS GOING TO BE HER CALL. SHE GREW IN ALL THE THINGS THAT MOLDED HER ALONG HER WA Y, AND HELD MANY A SOUTH DAKOTA PRINCESS CROWN, AND BEAUTIFULLY MAY I SAY. SHE IS SO GIVING TO THIS WORLD AND FILLING IT WITH SO MANY THINGS, I AM WAITING FOR HER NEXT VENTURE AND WHAT LIFE HAS NEXT TO BRING.
