As we take up the pen to write these, our first School Notes, we find ourselves at the outset faced with a serious problem. How are we to begin? We cannot say, " With trembling fingers we take up the pen," because we have some regard for the truth, and that would certainly not be quite true. Shall we apologise for intruding upon the reader at all? No; but we shall say that, doubtful as we are of our own ability, we have the greatest confidence in our staff. Now the ice is broken !

With this number our Magazine enters on its nineteenth year, and it is now older than any of its editors.

We only hope that, like the immortal brook, it may go on for ever.

We have all been very sorry to hear of the Rector's serious illness. Happily, however, he has been progressing very favourably, and we may hope that before these lines appear in print he will be among us once again.

The old School has hardly seemed like the same place since the Summer Holidays, so many familiar faces are missing. It is not often that such a great number leave us at one time.

Those who previously conducted this Magazine have all left, and thus it is in the hands of an entirely new and inexperienced staff.

We reproduce with this number the photographs of Williamson and W. W. Jameson, two of the most R. A. prominent of those whose absence we have to deplore.

Williamson, as everyone knows, was our last year's Dux, and, as President of the Debating Society, he gave universal satisfaction. We wish him every success both at the University and in his future career.

W. W. Jameson was quite the Crichton of the School.

He covered himself with glory in our Athletic Sports last year, and he must be one of the best jumpers for his age in Scotland. He made a splendid football captain, and also proved himself one of the best cricketers in the School.

As Secretary of the Swimming Club, he managed everything in a most business-like manner. He was a VicePresident in the Debating Society, and proved himself one of the most brilliant speakers. Last but not least, he was one of the most learned members of the VII. When shall we see his equal ?

Again the School has done splendidly in the Leaving Certificates, doing especially well in. Higher Grade and Honours. We must congratulate above all G. E. Hay, who has passed in Honours in English, Latin, and Greek.

In the last there were only nine successful candidates, and Hay is the only one from Aberdeen. Mr. Middleton Must be pardonably proud of having for two successive years succeeded in bringing a pupil safely through Honours Greek. Surely there could be no better testimonial to The the splendid work he is doing in the School. treup gone has French in Honours standard required for mendously, and only nine were gained altogether out of almost five hundred candidates, so that we need not be surprised that none came to us. Five Honours in English also is something to be proud of.

The School is now all fitted with electric light. will be found a great convenience in every way.

Our Annual Athletic Sports have come and gone again, and we were favoured with very good weather, considering the time of year. The Rev. W. H. E. Ward was unavoidably absent, but Mr. James Davidson very ably filled his place. Mr. C. Davidson, Mr. John Clarke, Mr. Mackie, and Mr. Josephs all deserve the thanks of the School for their kindness in helping us. The Rector was unfor-

tunately unable to be present owing to his illness, and a great many small bays thought it a good opportunity to disport themselves inside the ropes. These were not sufficiently checked on the first day, but on the Saturday the Games Committee, aided by Mr. C. Davidson, carried out its duties in a more efficient manner. Great amusement was caused when the unfortunate Editor of this Magazine mis-spelt a fellow's name while writing on. the blackboard.

There were no great performances in the Open Events, as there were last year, but still we must congratulate P. B. Simpson and H. M`Pherson, both of whom did exceedingly well. Of the younger competitors, H. G. M. Wilson is the best, while E. P. Barnett and G. E. Scroggie are also very good. We look to these three to uphold the honour of the School in the future, as they all show the greatest promise. Finally, we must not forget to congratulate D. J. Davidson on winning the Mile.

Much amusement was caused by two new events, Tilting the Ring and a Slow Bicycle Race, especially when, in the former, one competitor was unfortunate enough to burst his tyre with the sword he was brandishing.

The election of officials for the Literary and Debating Society has taken place once more, and the number of the VII. who hold office surely constitutes a record. Unfortunately J. G. Damson is the only one of the officials who has been in office before. He has done the bulk of the work connected with drawing up the syllabus, and may be congratulated on the result. There are to be some excellent lectures, including one by Mr. John Clarke, our old Classical Master, when we expect a very large gathering. Two former Presidents of the Society will also read papers, and quite a number of F.P.'s are members. The Society is now open to all those in Classical and Modern IV. who are approved by the Committee, and we hope there will be a good membership, and, what is more important, that the members will attend regularly.

The Cricket Season is over once again, and the results have not been very satisfactory. In the lst XI. there were many of last year's team, and we ought to have had a fairly good season, but we lost five matches and had only a single

victory, while one of the drawn games was in a very even condition. With the exception of the two matches against the 'Shire, most of the games were fairly well contested, and we cannot help thinking that the School ought to have won more often. It seemed that the team was too nervous to do itself justice, and it was bad batting more than bad bowling that lost the matches.

Unfortunately, A. S. Johnson, our Cricket Captain, has left us, and has returned to Australia. We quite expected to see him leading the team for several years to come, and his loss will be severely felt. Perhaps it would be a good thing if a less ambitious list of fixtures were arranged next year.

The Football Season is now beginning, and H. M`Pherson has been elected Captain, while L. J. Smith is Secretary. They are well fitted for their respective posts, and M`Pherson is one of the best forwards the School has ever had. Although but four of last year's 1st XV., and not very many of the 2nd, are still available, the team has done fairly well as yet, and we may hope for a moderately successful season. The 2nd XV., however, is far too light to be of any use against its heavier opponents.

The Library is not flourishing as it ought to do, and only a very small percentage of those who are eligible have joined it. Why are there so few members out of the Upper School? We have been looking through the shelves. and we can assure even the learned members of the VII. Every that they contain a very fine selection of books.

Grammar School boy ought to support the School institutions, and surely the nominal charge of one shilling is not a serious matter. We understand that, if a sufficient number of members join, the Library will be opened every day.

The behaviour of some members of the two highest classes in. the Reading Room can hardly be described as dignified or decorous. We would remind them that it is a Reading Room, not a Bear Garden.

Our Annual Swimming Sports took place in the Corporation Baths in June, and proved a great success. Most of the prizes, indeed, went in the direction of the two

Williamsons, but no one can deny that they thoroughly deserved them. We are afraid that at our next Sports we shall be without both of them, and it will be long before we find their equals. We owe our thanks to Messrs.

Johnstone and Mailer, both of the Thistle Swimming Club, -a- their kindness in assisting us.

The membership of the Swimming Club is not yet as large as it ought to be, and we should like to see it increased.

If only we had a sufficient number of good swimmers in the Club, at our next Sports we might have a water-polo match, Classical v. Modern.

Last year's VII. Classical has been photographed, each member being taken separately, and now a large copy of the group adorns the Hall.

Our Prize Day, which took place on Wednesday, 25th June, was darkened by the news of the King's sudden illness and critical condition. Mr. Mackie had trained a most select choir chosen from the two highest classes to sing the Coronation Anthem along with Miss Mackie's sopranos, but, of course, this had to be omitted. What a treat the School must have missed !

During the Holidays the Rector gave a picnic to the two highest classes at Kildrummy Castle.

Most of the fellows went to Alford by train, although several cycled, and there we were met by the Rector. The party amounted to twenty-five in all. We were driven in a brake to Kildrumray, a distance of ten miles, and there the Rector provided us with an excellent lunch, and showed us over the ruins. Then we went several miles further to Colonel Allardvce's estate, a place with an unspellable name, and were hospitably entertained and provided with tea. We roamed about the grounds for a little, and then started on our return journey, and we arrived safely in Alford once more, after running over an unfortunate duck on the way.

The Rector pointed out all the places of interest, and numerous songs helped to pass away the time, so that everyone was sorry when a most enjoyable day came to an end.

We desire to express our indebtedness to L. J. Smith for his help in producing this number. He has had the bulk of the work to do, and has done it in a manner which leaves nothing to be desired.

IN the august Coronation Procession in Westminster Abbey one "Old Boy" was an. imposing figure. That was the Most Reverend Robert Machray, Archbishop of Rupertsland, Primate of Canada, who was there by virtue of his being Prelate of the Order of St. Michael and St. George.

Of all the many " Old Boys" who clustered round the ropes at our Sports, only one, so far as we observe, wore the School colours. That one, Kenneth Mackenzie, after a course at Oxford, is now finishing his medical course at Edinburgh. He has always been a loyal Grammarian.

Another loyal " Old Boy," Fred. Fraser, has just left for Ceylon amidst the best wishes of all his numerous friends.

As one of his friends said at the station, " About half the 'Varsity is here to see Freddy off." We understand that he is to engage in tea-planting in Ceylon with his father, who, besides owning estates of his own, is adviser on Sir Thomas Lipton's large estates.

Mr. George. Shirres has been appointed Vice-Master of Christ's College, Cambridge.

It may interest some of our readers to know that George Gray, from Cartagena, after spending four years in the School of Mines at Freiberg, Germany, is now at Liege, in Belgium, studying the chemistry of mining. After that he intends to take up silver-mining on a large scale in Spain. He has a thorough command of the English, His elder Spanish, French, and German languages. brother Albert is now studying for his F.R.C.S. degree in London. His youngest brother has just come to school.

The father, who is Consul at Cartagena, is a life-member of our " Old Boy's " Club, and is a handsome subscriber to the paulo-post future Byron Statue.

Dr. G. B. Shirres, Neurologist and Neuro-Pathologist of M'Gill University, Montreal, has also been appointed Professor of Diseases of the Nervous System at the University of Vermont, U.S.A. He was physician to the household of the late Governor-General of Canada.

One of our best-known bankers in town had a long discussion with us at the Sports about banking as a profession for boys.

He was complaining bitterly of the deficiencies of the majority of fellows from our secondary schools who take up banking as a career. He did not seem to know that it is not as a rule the best of our boys that take up the profession of banking. " Why not the best, then? " he asked. " Because there is no inducement for them," was the reply. " Nonsense ! " he said. " What we want is the best-trained boys from the Grammar School, with a University training in addition. For such there are always excellent places." What do our readers think of this? One thing has always struck us, and that is that the majority of bank agents and bank employes are men who as a rule had been taken away from school long before they had received anything but the elements of education.

We met an interesting old Grammarian this summer at Strathpeffer. He is now one of the leading bankers in Edinburgh. He was on the quay when Queen Victoria first landed in Aberdeen, and says that he and many others of the Grammar fellows come next to the soldiers in the well-known engraving of the landing of the Queen at Aberdeen, but they are not shown in the picture.

One of the newest London weeklies—The Coloured Pictorial—is edited by J. Gillanders, who was for many years on the staff of Black and White.

Amongst the Colonial Premiers who received the degree of LL.D. at Edinburgh University in July was Sir William M`Gregor, K.C.M.G., Governor of Lagos.

John William Ross has been appointed Acting-Colonial Secretary of Fiji. We rather think that it was he who, when at School, was seized by the religious mania prevalent in Aberdeen in the early eighties. If it was he, then he used to delight us who were his class-fellows by preaching occasionally in Castle Street. I'm afraid he made little

impression on our sin-hardened minds. But let our readers note the rewards of early piety. Sic itur ad astra.

Captain Hector Brown, Imperial Yeomanry, and Lieut.

R. A. Duthie, R.A., had the distinguished honour of being mentioned in the despatches of Lord Kitchener at the end of the war. The former has received an important appointment in. the War Office, while the latter has just left for British Central Africa to prospect for gold. His brother officers entertained him to supper before leaving.

The King has been pleased to promote Mr. James Scott to be His Majesty's Consul-General at Canton, China.

We have been trying to get an article from him for our Magazine, and think that we may yet succeed. And what about one from Student-Interpreter Combe at Pekin, Mr. Editor?

Among those called to the Scots Bar was Mr. A. M. Mackay, M.A. (Cantab.), LL.B. (Edin.). Mr. Mackay's academic career has been an unusually distinguished one.

At the Universities of Aberdeen and Cambridge, he took high honours in Arts, and more recently, in the University of Edinburgh, where his legal curriculum was passed, he has, besides numerous class prizes, gained a Vans Dunlop Law Scholarship of £100 a year for three years, as well as the Thaw Scholarship for eminence in conveyancing. In April last he graduated LL.B. with special distinction.

A. M. is a good all-round man, for he almost succeeded in. carrying off the Scottish Championship of lawn-tennis this summer.

The death occurred suddenly of Rev. Henry Angus, D.D., minister of Erskine United Free Church, Arbroath.

He was the third son of the late Rev. Henry Angus, who was for many years minister of St. Nicholas United Presbyterian Church, Aberdeen. He was educated at the Grammar School and Marischal College, Aberdeen. At the University he took a distinguished position—being the Boxill mathematical prizeman of his year—and graduated in Arts in. 1852. While attending the University he became a member of the Select Hellenic Club, started by Professor John Stuart Blackie.

Under-Officer J. Gray, Sandhurst, was, on the occasion. of the recent inspection there, presented with the sword of honour as being the most distinguished cadet of the year.

Lord Roberts, who presented the sword, warmly congratulated Mr. Gray on his high position. He has just left for India to join the Indian Staff Corps.

Alfred Chalmers Hay took the 13th place at the recent Competition for the Indian Police. The late VII. will wish him luck. Fred. Galloway got a similar position a few years ago. Why don't more of our fellows who are fond of an open-air life try this examination? The prospects are excellent.

Mr. James Strachan, who was Seventh Wrangler last year, after having been only two years at Cambridge, has just taken a Class I. in the Natural Science Tripos at Cambridge, his subject, being Physics.

Mr. Strachan is an Aberdonian. He entered the Aberdeen. Grammar School in. 1885, and passed through the entire course of education there till 1895, when he proceeded to the University as third bursar. During his undergraduate career he took a foremost place among the students of his time in Mathematics, Physics, and Natural Science, graduating M.A. in 1899 with first-class honours in. Mathematics. In. the same year he took the B.Sc. degree. At the graduation in Arts he was awarded some of the principal University prizes—the Simpson Mathematical, the Greig Prize in Natural Philosophy, the David Rennet Gold Medal, and the Town Council Gold Medal to the best student of the year. From Aberdeen University he went to Cambridge, entering at Clare College and taking a high place in the scholarship competition there. Shortly after he went to Cambridge he gained the Fullerton Scholarship of Aberdeen University. Both at Aberdeen and Cambridge he has taken an active part in college matters. Last year he was appointed President of the Clare College Debating Society. Recently, too, he has been prominent in the Union debates.

W. B. Anderson, of Trinity College, Cambridge, who was Master far a short time with us, tells us that Strachan is likely to be President of the Cambridge Union next year. This is the highest position which an undergraduate can. attain, and it is naturally one which is highly valued.

We regret to announce the deaths of the Rev. George Barron Walker, M.A., Rector of St. Peter's, Peterhead, and of Charles Alexander Barclay, Aberdour House, well known throughout all Scotland as a successful farmer and factor for the Dingwall-Fordyce family.

We regret also to announce the death of the Rev. J. L. Thomson, Menmuir, Brechin. Mr. Thomson was a native of New Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire, and received his early education at the Public School there, and afterwards at Aberdeen Glammar School, where he proved a distinThereafter he attended Aberdeen Uniguished pupil. versity, where he gained a high bursary. He was second bursar in Divinity, and, while pursuing his theological studies, and for some time after, was senior tutor in the Gymnasium, Old Aberdeen. Later on. he gained the degree of B.D. with honours. He went to Menmuir in 1875. In. 1890 his congregation and friends gave him a silver tea and coffee service and salver and a purse of sovereigns on the occasion of his semi-jubilee. In the following year his congregation presented him with pulpit robes, a Bible, and a marble timepiece.

Marcus A. Thomson has been awarded one of the Ada Lewis Scholarships, tenable for three years, at the Royal Academy of Music, London. The Ada Lewis Scholarships are among the most valuable of the Royal Academy Scholarships, and are open to the United Kingdom, and Mr. Thomson is to be heartily congratulated on his success.

Marcus was always willing and ready to sing at our School concerts, where he was always one of the " draws " of the evening. We wish him every success.

Major James F. Clyne, of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment (Militia) has been appointed second in command of that regiment.

Harry E. Smith took the 7th place in the recent examination for the Indian Medical Service. Norman. W. Mackworth has just left for India to take up his duties in the same service.

entering on their Divinity course for the United Free Church. Mr. Gauld intends to proceed to Edinburgh.

We congratulate him most heartily on his distinguished success.

J. Forbes Anderson, who took double honours at the last graduation for the M.A. degree has been appointed Assistant to the Professor of Logic.

Sir George Reid has resigned the office of President of the Royal Scottish Academy, which he has held since 1891.

B. E. Thomson, of Menmuir, after undergoing a severely searching examination at the hands of the reverend and learned Synod of Aberdeen, has come out first of all the Church of Scotland Divinity candidates in Aberdeen University, and has had his papers sent up to the central body in Edinburgh for the Barty Prize.

We are glad to see that at the University this session all the Societies and Committees have their full, and even more than full, proportion of " Old Boys." We see that Russell, who conducted this Magazine so well, is one of the leading lights of Alma Mater. Fortescue and Minto are the leaders on the Conservative and Liberal sides respectively in the Rectorial Election, and the bazaar is being run almost entirely by "Old Boys." Minto, of course, is President of the S.R.C. Lieut.-Colonel W. Johnston, M.D., who during the war was Assistant-Director of the Army Medical Service at the War Office, has been promoted to be Colonel in recognition of his services. He has in addition been made C.B. "With Macdonald in. Uganda," an account of the expedition of Colonel J. R. L. Macdonald, R.E., has been. announced by Mr. Edward Arnold.

In the examination held last August for telegraphists, A. D. Williamson. second in Modern V. last session, was fourth for Aberdeen and fifth for the whole kingdom, with a total of 1,686 marks out of a possible 1,900.

In the same examination, Wm. K. Scott, dux of Modern IV. last session, was eighth for Aberdeen, with a total of 1,553. The subjects of examination are English (composition, writing, spelling), arithmetic, and geography, with a maximum of 800, 600, and 500 marks respectively. Williamson's marks were 675, 555, 456 ; Scott's 621, 540, 392.

For Aberdeen alone there were 17 vacancies and 58 candidates.

How many of our readers know that Sir David Gill, Astronomer-Royal for the Cape of Good Hope, is an " Old Boy"? We were reminded of this the other day, when Mr. George Allan, advocate, who was at our School in the days of William IV., wrote making enquiries about him.

Mr. Allan has stored up in his library facts about almost every Aberdonian of note during the last seventy years.

We were privileged to see some of these notes lately, and what a mine of information for our School historian whenever he appears. What skeletons in the cupboard too!

C. B. Cruickshank, Superintendent of the West India Cable Company, directed operations from the ill-fated " Grappler,' which sank off St. Pierre during the dreadful explosions of Mont Pelee. He fortunately left that vessel on furlough two days before its destruction, but had been tempted to go back to repair the broken cable. The temptation was, we may whisper, at the rate of £2,000 per annum—not bad for a young man of thirty, eh? He had a very narrow escape from being overwhelmed in one of the recent discharges from Pelee, and is now at home.

James A. Butchart has now been gazetted First Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery in India. We understand that he is quite an adept at polo, and plays in all the inter-regimental matches.

The Rev. Adam Fyfe Findlay, equally distinguished on our playing field as in our class-rooms, has been called from Whithorn U.F. Church to the Erskine Memorial Church, Arbroath. After taking a very high position in all his classes at School, he went to Aberdeen University, where he graduated with first-class honours in Classics.

He was Dr. Black Latin Prizeman and Seafield Gold Medallist in English. He lived for a year in Berlin and another in Athens.

AN F.P. IN A FRENCH PRISON. A STRANGE BUT TRUE STORY OF THE YEAR 1902.

THREE Aberdeen gentlemen—one an F.P.—possessing six University degrees among them, set out to spend their holidays in France this year. Their experiences while there were such as they are not soon likely to forget. At one time it seemed as if there were to be a diplomatic " incident" over what happened, but let us listen to the story as told by our F.P. to one of the local newspapers :— The three of us left Paris a fortnight ago, and duly arrived at Orleans. We had gone to our hotel, and after dinner proceeded to the post-office to buy some stamps.

To our surprise in came half-a-dozen gendarmes and lugged the lot of us off. Personally I was handcuffed, on account, I suppose, of the nature of the evidence which they afterwards produced against me. We were submitted to a searching examination. Everything was taken from us, and, lest anything should be concealed, they even went the length of examining our collars and ties.

My impression at the outset was that we were regarded as German spies looking at the French fortifications, but after waiting for some hours it transpired that we were accused of stealing a watch. About midnight two women were brought in, and one of them, pointing to me, declared, " That's him ; that's him." I was now taken in hand by the Commissaire, who said, " Do you speak French? " I replied that I did, and he thereupon proceeded to interrogate me minutely as to what I had been. doing in Paris, and as to my holiday generally. I explained to him, as fully as I could, when I left Aberdeen and what my friends and I had been doing since. I asked him whether there was any charge against me, and if we were accused nf committing a felony. Half-an-hour afterwards the two women again appeared on the scene, and I was asked to stand up in a corner. One of the females positively identified me and swore distinctly that I was the man.

The case appeared to be that somebody had called at a house in Orleans, and, failing to carry out his mission there had proceeded to the residence of the Abbe. Finding that the Abbe was out, he asked to be allowed to write a note. He was shown into a room for the purpose, and, during the absence of the servant, had the impertinence to carry off the Abbe's watch. The three witnesses were the

housekeeper and the servant at the first place at which the alleged delinquent had put in an appearance, and the servant who attended to the Abbe's comforts. I proceeded to submit the woman to an examination on my own account, but the Commissaire promptly pulled me up by suggesting that I had better wait, and that I was the person being examined, and was not the person who should be permitted to conduct the inquiry. I suggested to him that he should telegraph to the hotel at Paris, and ascertain whether my bona-fides were not well founded. He agreed to this, and, in answer to my representation, said he could not release me in. view of the evidence of the women. My friends were dismissed about one o'clock in the morning, but for the night I was consigned to the cold guard-room, and a wooden bed, attended to by the night-staff policeman, who loafed about, and smoked and spat, and generally seemed to view the business with singular unconcern.

Next morning the Commissaire again came upon the seen°, and I was put through another examination. The Abbe's servant was now called as a witness, and she had no doubt whatever that I was the man, although she admitted that I should have a moustache, a black suit, and eyeglasses. There were now three women against me, and I began to realise that I was in a somewhat serious dilemma. I had produced my railway ticket, my hotel bills, my diary, and other articles of property, in order to satisfy the French police as to my absolute innocence.

The watch had been stolen on Saturday, and I had not been at Orleans until Monday, and I pointed out that that was an aspect of the case which would be worth consideration. The French official would not accept that view of the situation, which I thought the circumstances demanded. I asked him if he would telegraph to Paris, and he said he would. At this time my friends appeared, bearing with them a bottle of wine and some provisions, and we were as happy and jocular as the circumstances allowed. To add to my discomfiture I was now further identified by a sergeant of police, who said I had spoken to him, and asked to be directed to the American Consulate.

This was a new feature in the business which took me entirely by surprise, and I began still more to realise that if identity was continued at this rate, I should soon be sworn to by the whole population of Orleans. At four o'clock in the afternoon I determined to take some steps to get out of the hands of the police. My two friends telegraphed to the British Embassy, explaining the circum-

stances, and setting forth exactly how matters stood. Soon afterwards I had to face another official, this time a gentleman who might be described as the public prosecutor. I wished him good morning, and he replied civilly enough, and then proceeded to submit me to another prolonged examination. Once more I relied on my railway tickets, my hotel bills, and my diary. This gentleman seemed to be impressed with my statement, and yet appeared puzzled.

I asked him if he had any word from Paris, and he said he had, and that it was the communication. from Paris that had thrown a greater mystery around the situation than ever existed before. The hotel to which the wire had been sent had replied, through the Parisian police, that the three persons mentioned in the telegram from Orleans had never been heard of at that establishment, despite the fact that the bills I produced bore the name of the hotel and our own names and other details on which I relied as proving my innocence. For myself I was rather flabbergasted and nonplussed at this new and unexpected development. I had relied on the hotelkeeper, of all people, to put the situation in its proper light.

The public prosecutor seemed to agree with me that he could not understand, in view of the documentary evidence, what the telegram from Paris meant. Once more the women were brought on the scene. This time, however, there was a slight breakdown in. the identification. The moustache, the black suit, and the eye-glasses were features which the man who sneaked the Abbe's watch undoubtedly possessed, and which I utterly lacked. I emphasised the fact that I had no moustache, that I wore a Scotch tweed suit, and had not yet taken to eye-glasses. I then suggested a test which I thought might effectually establish my innocence. The person who called at the Abbe's house left a note. I asked the public prosecutor if he would compare the handwriting of this interesting gentleman with my own. He said he had done so, and admitted that they were wide as the poles asunder. It dawned upon me that there was one more test which I might employ, and I asked the prosecutor to inquire of the women whether the person whom they saw was a Frenchman, and whether he spoke French as a native ought to do. Inquiries made in this connection brought forth the reply that he was undoubtedly a Frenchman, speaking perfect French, and that beyond all question he was not a foreigner. I regarded this as a distinct hit on my part, and eventually, after further investigation and trouble, I was set at liberty about five o'clock in the after-

noon. I have reason to believe that the action of those responsible for the management of the Parisian hotel brought upon them a very severe censure. Ultimately they had to declare, in proper legal form, that the perplexing telegram they had sent to Orleans was untrue. They got a talking from the British Embassy, and when we returned to Paris we gave the proprietor of the establishment a warm time. After the French police had set me at liberty, and the matter had been cleared up, and the French authorities had expressed regret for the trouble and annoyance to which we had been put, we three of us had a dainty French dinner.

THE MOON. If you have not, take for it is worth seeing. so, doing of the earliest opportunity It is the most wonderful thing in the world, and possesses the peculiar property of being seen in all parts of the • earth at the same time: as least, I am told that if you were to see it in Europe, and could go to Australia the same night, you would see it there also.

It is pretty generally known now that the moon is made of green cheese, although scientific men have taken a long time to find this out, and the most curious hypotheses have been made concerning It. One of the most remarkable is that it consists of plain land and water, and is simply a world like our own. The conjecture is not worth refuting, and I will leave it to the common-sense of my readers to determine what to believe. Some people may say—" If the moon were made of green cheese it would not shine, nor give light to the earth." To such people I answer— " Keep a piece of green cheese as long as the moon has been in existence, and if it does not shine then—I'll eat it ! " A person of an observant turn of mind will soon notice that the moon is acted on by many powers. For instance, the tides determine what are called the "faces of the moon." For my own part, I never could see any resemblance to a face except when the moon was full, and then only because the ravages made by mites before the cheese became frozen chance to be in. positions where eyes, nose, and mouth might have been. About the mites we might I DARESAY you have seen the moon.

The first signs of frost had appeared on the moon shortly before this, and innumerable swarms of mites had descended on the earth, plaguing the: Egyptians dreadfully.

You have no doubt heard of Joseph's dreams—how the sun, moon, eleven stars, and also the sheaves bowed before him. This was an emblem of how in after days he would have plenty of warmth—wives—bread—and cheese. This also is a proof that the moon is made of cheese.

The reason that most people fail to see the green colour of the moon is that they have so much " green in their eye " that it completely absorbs the colour of the cheese, and leaves it apparently pure and white. I think I am the only man that sees the moon in its true colours. The Latins used to call the moon "lun.a," from "lunatic," because when one becam6 full so did the other—especially if he was full of green cheese.

Scientists have endeavoured to explain the " faces of the moon" I alluded to before, but very few have as yet come to a satisfactory conclusion. I shall try to explain it to you.

The other side of the moon, which is hidden from our view, is an immense rolling sea, in the depths of which lives a huge octopus. Naturalists have yet to discover that the favourite food of these polypi is green cheese : yet such is the fact, and the moon octopus is not slow to take advane of his surroundings. Every month he squirts a black, inky fluid over the cheese ; and this, while hiding it from the eyes of the terrestrials, softens the frozen cheese enough to let the cuttle feed for four weeks. For this fact read " Moses' Complete Astrologer " or " Aaron's History of the Stars," both of which can be purchased at any first-class bookseller's.

As a last proof I shall quote the building of the Tower of Babel, when everyone was suddenly struck with a different language. This is not explained by Moses, but is very easily accounted for. The Tower grew steadily until it was so high that many people died of starvation while food was being brought up from below; but at last it reached the moon. As you may imagine, the famished crowd instantly fell upon the cheese, and devoured it with avidity. Soon, however, the reaction came, and, under the

agonies of green cheese, each one forgot how to speak and had to invent a language of his own. Even had he remembered, it is probable that his own tongue had become so distasteful to him that he would never have used it again.

Thus, as we see clearly, in spite of all the efforts of evil-minded and. unscrupulous persons to prove the contrary, the moon still remains green cheese.

UNCONSCIOUS HUMOUR IN THE CLASS-ROOM. Ix a recent number of the School Magazine there was a short article dealing with those gems of translation which occur so frequently in Latin and Greek classes. This article recalled. to my mind several other amusing translations, some of which were perpetrated in the class of which I had the honour to be a member, and others which I have been told about. These ludicrous translations were most likely all blurted out on the spur of the moment : for when a lesson has been superficially prepared, or not prepared at all, a boy may see one word which has some connection, either in sound or in meaning, with some other word, get confused, and finally make a wild attempt to translate the passage, generally producing ridiculous nonsense. Truly, " fools rush in where angels fear to tread."

One of the best examples of this was a translation of one of the first lines of the fourth Aeneid, namely, " Anna soror, quae me suspensam insomnia terrent." The luckless wight who had this to translate had evidently mixed up " insomnia " with " solemne," for he gave the following remarkable rendering, " Any sorrow which frightens me from solemnly hanging myself." Another line of that same book, " Insequitur commixta grandine nimbus," was once translated, " A grand mixture nimbly follows." The line " Aeneas celsa in puppi, iam certus eundi carpebat," was once rendered by a boy at the pedal extremity of a class, " When Aeneas had called his little dog, it certainly barked while coming." But for this, no Grammar School boy was responsible. " Sint Tires in senectute " was, however, once translated " There are men. in the senate " by a Grammar School boy

in the Sixth Classical. In that same class, too, a youth one day had to translate a few lines of Euripides' Electra.

He began The first was "6 5' irrara CIT A XeZ7701, 06K hl , WKora." " but here he iirctra lyvucora, the liver not being known was politely requested to resume his seat. Such a performance was enough for one day.

One moderately clever youth, in a fit of absent-mindedness once began a Greek passage thus, "Kat a µEv, and the men." " Uda videtur baxba " was once translated " A cruel wave was seen"; while a boy in the Fifth once rendered - intonsum simplex Damasichthona vulnus adficit" as "The foolish Damasichthon cut himself while shaving." " Caecus tacet " was once translated " He takes the cake," and "consobrinus " " a fellow teetotaler."

Annoying though such translations may be to the master, yet he is often compelled to laugh. I have no doubt that many similar instances could be related of these little comedies which help to lessen the monotony of the R. N. P. class-room.

SEVEN DAYS UNDER CANVAS.

PROBABLY a good proportion of those who go to the University will join one of the corps there, and, as under the new regulations, attendance at camp once in two years is compulsory, the following account of camp life may be found not uninteresting.

The 1st V.B.G.H. left Aberdeen at 5 p.m. on Friday, 25th July, for Farnborough, two miles from Aldershot.

The journey down. was wearisome, occupying as it did.

19 hours, and was very cold, particularly in the small hours.

Farnborough is thirty-two miles from London, and to go that distance alone took three hours and a quarter. We arrived there at last at about twelve o'clock. We had been told that the camp was " within half-a-mile from the station," but to us, stiff and cramped, it seemed half-adozen, though it is actually a little under two miles.

Even when we arrived at camp there was no " rest for the weary." Tents had to be fixed properly, luggage had to be distributed, and orderlies had to be sent for food.

In. the tent in which the writer was, the junior private was sent that day, the others taking it according to seniority. We may remark in passing that it is best to go on for orderly the first day, as afterwards there were many

At the kitchen were a rules issued about getting food. number of bottles filled with a muddy liquid. The writer thought it was ditchwater ; another orderly inclined to the opinion £hat it was soup ; but one of the cooks declared it was tea. Some greasy lumps of fat were also served out, called mutton chops, which in several tents were thrown out without being tasted; though it is only fair to say that the food improved in process of time.

Then long cotton bags for beds and smaller ones for pillow-cases were served out. These had to be filled with straw.

There had been a steadily-rising wind blowing all day, and about seven o'clock word was passed round for - Volunteers to help with the dry canteen." On arriving there we found about thirty men holding on to the ropes and canvas of the tent, and more hurrying up from all directions. Twice was a rope fixed on an iron peg after much struggling, and twice was the peg torn out of the ground. Then came a stranger gust, and the canvas was torn out of the men's hands, dragging them after it. As they tried to haul it out another terrific gust came, blowing the tent into the air. Two or three men were sent head over heels, and several narrowly escaped broken wrists.

After this nothing could be done except to watch the tent falling.

Reveille on Sunday was at 5 a.m. as on other days, but, as church parade was not till 6 p.m., the day was spent in "cleaning up." The service was conducted by the Chaplain to the Liverpool Scottish (a very smart set of men), who is none other than " Ian Maclaren."

On Monday the parades were in shirt-sleeves, as the field-service tunics had not arrived, though the slouch-hats had. The parades were--6.45 to 7.45, 10 to 12, and 2 to 3.

Leave was from 6.30 to 9.30, but a limited number of passes until midnight could be had. The interval between reveille and the first parade may appear long, but every second was needed. Bedding had to be taken out and aired, and the equipment arranged on it in a particular way, and in addition everything had to be cleaned.

On Monday and Tuesday only were the three parades a day kept to. On. Wednesday there was the morning parade and a four-hours' spell of manoeuvring. On Thursday there was a field day from 8.30 to 3.30, with thelloyal Scots as the enemy. That day the Public Schools Torps and ourselves were exercising on the same ground, and consequently we were always running up against each

Our other. Brigadier, the Colonels, and the Adjutants may know, but no one else does, not even who won. We didn't see the other regiments till next day, but it was glorious fun.

We got back to camp about 1.30, and began getting ready for leaving. Every second tent was struck, and its occupants put into the one next it. Needless to say, there were very few who got any sleep that night. Sixteen in a tent is not the acme of comfort. Reveille on Saturday was at 3. The battalion entrained about 6. On their arrival in London, the men were marched to the London Scottish headquarters, given a meal, and then dismissed until 7 p.m. The fatigue party arrived about 3. It may be mentioned that men were not put in. the fatigue party as a punishment. They were selected in a haphazard sort of way, and then calmly informed that they had " volunteered" for it. The battalion left Euston about 11 o'clock, except those men who had got their tickets extended for a week.

We may conclude with a word or two of advice. Don't go to camp expecting to have everything done for you, and don't look on. the whole thing as a huge joke got up expressly for your benefit. It is undoubtedly a holiday, but only because it is such a change. There is a great deal of hard work to be got through. Equipment must be kept clean. Here we may remark that several times we could see white dots creeping over the heather a mile or two away. These were the haversacks and spats of the men, who but for that would have been invisible.

A good many men slept in what they would have worn in a cricket match, light shoes included—and this was necessary. No one who has not experienced it can have any idea of the cold down there before the sun has risen.

Further, unpleasant though it may be at that hour, it is best to go and wash at once, as there is no time afterwards until after breakfast, when there is a great rush. If, as is likely, camp is at Aldershot next year, we can recommend the Soldier's Institute" there, where one can get " high tea" for eightpence, and for threepence a bath, a luxury which is appreciated after three or four days in camp.

These are, after all, only minor things, and there is a great deal to make up for them, so that we can heartily advise anyone who may be hesitating about going to camp to go and thoroughly enjoy himself.

I thank you for the interesting description game " football." I should wish that you gave me details at this about. In the grammar school here, we play " association," and I prefer that, as Rugby it is less dangerous and as much interesting.

I thank you for the heed that you testify at the victims in Martinique. Happily none of my relations or friends are not reckoned at the number deads. This irruption has also reached English Antilles but nimble.

Here the wether is now very fine, the nature is admirable and smiling under this carpet of green. It is the moment dreaming& and inspirations that do of us poets and made sing us his magnificence and his greatness.

* The larger number of candidates this year is more than accounted for by the entry of Modern IV. for Mathematics (Lower Grade). The most satisfactory features in this year's results are—(1) the generally high level of percentage in our passes, as compared with the results for all Scotland ; and (2) the marked increase in the total of Higher Grade passes, as compared with last year—till then, the highest total on record.

This result is the more striking, as, this year, candidates were limited to try for three Honours only, and some of our best candidates entered for only three papers.

THE AQUATIC SPORTS. THE School Annual Aquatic Sports, which took place on the 6th of June, were a great success. There was a large number of entries, and each. event was contested with thorough keenness. An. excellent attendance of spectators greatly added to the enthusiasm of the competitors. The Rector acted as chairman. . The Sports opened with the Championship Race for the Rector's Cup and Medal. Four started—M. J. Williamson, I). H. W. Williamson, H. M`Pherson, and L. J. Smith. All competition, however, rested between the two first, and, midst great excitement, Maurice Williamson won by a few yards. As he carried off the medal last year, this time it went to his brother, D. H. W. Williamson. We consider Maurice Williamson the finest swimmer the School has ever had, as regards both pace and style. In fact, he seems quite as much at home in the water as out of it.

by M. Williamson.

Both the Junior and Senior Tub Races were a huge success. The Seniors, however, owing to preponderance of brain and muscle, were unable to keep their tubs afloat, so an ingenious plan was adopted.

The Aquatic Sports.

Three small f ry were placed in the tubs, and the three Seniors pulled along their freights by aid of ropes. This race roused great excitement, and ought henceforth to be one of the recognised events. The Senior Handicap had to be swum in several heats, owing to the large number of entrants. In the Junior Handicap, A. Campbell, our friend from Ceylon, showed very promising swimming powers ; he ought to figure well next year. The Blindfold and Candle Races were very popular, and the last event, the Greasy Pole, again caused great fun. Several boys nearly reached the end of the pole, and there was great doubt as to who was first, but H. M`Pherson, in the last round, dismissed all this uncertainly by sliding clean out over the end of the pole. The Rector, with a few suitable words, brought the proceedings to a close. The judges were A. Johnstone, Esq. (T.S.C.), and D. Mailer, Esq. (T.S.C.).

year was 50. It is to be hoped that there will be no decrease this year, and that new swimmer will come forward to take the place of the many who have left us.

The election of officials, the result of which will be found on. another page, then took place, and the proceedings concluded with a vote of thanks to the Rector.

THE ATHLETIC SPORTS. ON Friday and Saturday, the 26th and 27th of September, our Annual Athletic Sports were held. On Friday, the trial heats and jumping took place. Never since the Sports were changed from the month of April to September have we had such mild weather. Refreshments were supplied both days in a marquee erected in the usual place. The entries for the various events were very satisfactory, especially in Classes II., III., IV., and V. Just as the Sports were to commence, it was discovered that the essential " Maxim" was wanting. However, a boy was immediately despatched to Playfair's to borrow one, and the programme opened with the High Jump instead of the Quarter-Mile Race. The jumping was keenly contested in every class, and by the time it was over, the " shooter " had arrived. The heats in the different classes were then run off. As the last of these was being run, the sky became overcast and threatening, but luckily no rain fell until the last item on the day's programme.

There was a large turn-out of spectators, amongst whom were most of the School and the Masters. We were sorry to see that the small boys again persisted in intruding within the barrier. The Sports Committee forgot to set their " guards" along the inside of the ropes, and consequently a perfect horde of youngsters were scampering all over the field. Some of these had to be forcibly removed.

Saturday arrived, bringing with it dull but settled and warm weather. There was a very large, in fact a record number of spectators. By one o'clock the ropes were lined from end to end with a crowd of fair female forms— mothers, sisters, aunts, and cousins. We noticed also with pleasure a great many "Old Boys," who seemed to be taking a keen interest in all the races. This time " policemen " kept the small fry at bay behind the ropes.

The Hurdle Races were run first. In Class II., H. G. Wilson proved himself a born hurdler, clearing the bars

in perfect style. The Open 100 Yards Final was a splendid For the first sixty yards or so, H. M'Pherson race. and P. B. Simpson led, a dead level; then the latter, with a valiant sprint, shot ahead, passing the tape a couple of yards ahead of his opponent. M'Pherson, our " strong man," easily carried off Putting the Weight and Throwing the Hammer. The Slow Bicycle Race, a new feature in the Sports, was largely entered for. After a persevering struggle, J. Bannochie won. Slicing the Lemon (or rather Potato) and Tilting the Ring were also new, and were very popular with the fair sex, who encouraged the gallant knights of our " Tourney " with their hearty applause. A woeful mishap, however, somewhat banished the romance of the contest. " A gentle knight was pricking on the plain," when suddenly he pricked his back tyre with his worthy Toledo, and a mighty hiss burst forth from the Dunlop. Tossing chivalry to the four The Sack Races winds, he beat a crestfallen retreat. again afforded great amusement to the younger spectators.

The Mile was won by Douglas Davidson, who kept up a splendid pace throughout. Mr. Charles Davidson acted as collector-in-chief for the Band Race, and, having amassed a goodly sum, he squatted himself down in the middle of the field to count the result of his efforts. The Seventh v. School Tug-of-War was gained by the Seventh, but not without a stiff pull. The Obstacle Races, the most comical events of the day, were then run midst great laughter from the onlookers. Before the Consolation Race a Tug-of-War was arranged between twelve of the School and eight F.P.'s picked from the spectators. After a hard struggle, the School proved victorious.

The Rector and Mr. Ward were both unavoidably absent, and everyone wondered how the Sports could come off without them. However, the Sports Committee and Mr. James Davidson managed to make everything pass off quite as well as in former years. The Committee: was made up of—Mr. J. Davidson, I. K. Burnett, J. P. Cameron, L. Cox, W. J. Duncan, A. M. Geddes, H. M`Pherson, J. Norrie, W. Paterson, L. J. Smith, D. H. W. Williamson, and M. J. Williamson. Mr. Charles Davidson (F.P.) again acted as referee. The judges were Mr. J. Davidson and Mr. M. H. Mackie. Starter, H. Josephs.

L. J. S. CORRESPONDENCE. To the EDITOR of the GRAMMAR SCHOOL MAGAZINE. SIR,—With your permission I should like to address a few words to you on the conduct of some of the spectators at the football match on Saturday, 13th October, between the Gordon's College 1st XV. and our 2nd XV. I do not refer to the spectators on the field, but to the small knot of boys who clustered on the top of MacRobbie & wall, and during all the first half of the match gave vent to the most unsportsmanlike remarks. Intelligent criticism of the play is, of course, quite proper, and harmless chaff is also legitimate, I suppose, but when torrents of depreciatory and insulting remarks are poured out, I think something much stronger than remonstrance is required. I was surprised, however, that not even was remonstrance used by those with whom their sympathies lay. Really it was nothing short of disgraceful. Let our Committee, before next match, provide themselves with a few stout cudgels, the only argument that such hooligans can understand. SCHOOL Cricket this year was almost a failure on account of the weather, only seven of the twelve fixtures being played to a finish. The team was good, and looked forward to a successful season, but the soft condition of the ground at Mannofield greatly handicapped the Wednesday practices.

The fielding, we are pleased to say, was a great improvement on last year, but there is yet much to learn in this important branch before the School can hope to be recognised as the leaders of local Cricket. We had two really good bowlers in Alan S. Johnson and A. Geddes, the latter of whom, we trust, will be with us next season. The batting was not all that could have been wished for, but " C.A.P." Walker, who has secured the highest average this season, batted exceedingly well on several occasions, most especially at Aboyne, where he hit out with great freedom, scoring 48. A. Lyon, Catto, and Johnson were our other best bats. In the 'Shire match, the last on our card, J. Rae quite distinguished himself by scoring 24, and thereby checking what seemed to all an utter collapse of Behind the wickets, H. M`Pherson the School eleven, again proved himself a thoroughly reliable man.

He made a splendid Captain, and we hoped to have him for another season ; but the Fates forbade. Some day, doubtless, we shall see Johnson's name figuring in the Australian eleven.

Let us all join in wishing him good luck in his Colonial life.

LIBRARY. THE Library has begun a new year, and we should like to remind the Upper and Middle Schools of this important fact. As yet the membership is not nearly all that could be desired out of such a large number of boys, but we hope it will increase. We have still some shelves vacant, ready for the gifts of all kind donors. The reference department has had many new books added to it on many varieties of subjects, and is now fully equipped for reference work.

The Staff is an entirely new one, and consists of the following : —L. J. Smith, M. Williamson, J. Gillies, J. Rae, and H. G. Wilson.

With such a large staff the work certainly ought to be well done, and members will not have to wait such a long time for some one to attend to their wants.

THE Football Season has once again come round, and we

are sure that the School is not sorry, as Cricket towards the end of its season gets shockingly " slack." The School this year has been left in greater straits than ever before.

Only four of last year's 1st XV. have come back, and not more than half of the 2nd XV. A few of our non-" footer " men, however, have been at last induced to play, as well as one or two newcomers. We hope that these may continue to turn out regularly to the Wednesday practices.

The 1st XV., nevertheless, will be one of the lightest teams the School has ever had. We are sorry to find that many of the Upper School, who would make really good players, require so much pressing to take part in the practices.

This especially applies to certain members of the VII. Classical, who, when asked to play, excuse themselves by saying that they " can't be fagged." What sort of an example is this to the rest of the School? Could not the few " footer" enthusiasts of the Seventh use their persuasive powers towards their sluggardly brethren?

The 1st XV. has again obtained a very full fixture-card, and the 2nd XV. have a few fixtures and hope to get more as the season advances. The 1st XV. has arranged two matches with the Dundee High School 2nd F.P.'s, one on the 1st of November, to be played at Mannofield, which ground the 1st F.P.'s have kindly lent us for that date,

and a return at Dundee a fortnight later. In these matches it is to be hoped that the School may do as well as last year.

A.G.S. FORMER, PUPILS' R.F.C. (1902-1903).

THE Annual Meeting of the Club was held in the School on the evening of Friday, the 19th September, Mr. A. B. Butchart in. the chair. In the absence of the Secretary, the Chairman read the Committee's report on the past season, which stated that the play had not been so successful as in former years ; but, to the credit of the team, they were only defeated twice. Mannofield Grounds, unfortunately, proved a bad speculation, both on account of the wet weather and the decrease in the number of subto the scriptions, the latter causing a loss of almost Club. Mr. Samuel Pope, Jun., who has acted as Secretary and Treasurer since 1897, requested the Committee to relieve him of the secretarial work, but at the same time expressed his willingness to continue as Treasurer. The Committee, with much reluctance, acceded to his wish.

It was again earnestly hoped that as many as possible of the School players should see it their immediate duty to join the F.P.'s, as, without a steady influx of younger members, the Club cannot continue to be efficiently carried on. The meeting then proceeded to the election of officebearers, and, after considerable enthusiasm, the following were chosen :1ST XV. - Dr. Andrew S. Wilson.

The prospects for the coming season seem fairly bright, but this year's team will be the youngest that has ever represented the 1st F.P.'s.
