In the course of a few short weeks the curtain will fall and another act in the drama of life will be over. In many cases the schoolboy will be the schoolboy no more : he will have left for ever the School, round which his interests have centred for so many happy years, to pass into the wider life of the University or of business. Yet, on whatever new scenes the curtain may rise, we feel certain that all who are about to go from the School will take with them the best wishes of their schoolfellows, and, spurred on by the happy recollections of their schooldays, will strive with a]1 their might to uphold the high reputation of the old School.

Since the publication of our last Magazine a high honour has fallen to the lot of our Rector, an honour of which the whole School may with justice be proud. We refer to the degree of Doctor of Laws which the University of Aberdeen has conferred upon Dr. Simpson, and we take this further opportunity of offering our congratulations in the name of. the School. The teachers and pupils of the School have already done their best to show the high esteem in which they hold the Rector, making separate presentations to Dr. and Mrs. Simpson. We are sure that the appreciation which appears in this number of our Rector's brilliant career as student, teacher, and author, will be eagerly welcomed by all our readers, while his portrait, which was reproduced in our last issue, will, if possible, be yet more appreciated. .

ES, 0 For some time past Mr. G. N. Ritchie, one of our most able and popular masters, has been in a weak state of health, which has occasioned his absence from his daily work.

Until a few weeks ago Mr. Ritchie was recuperating under kinder skies, and we are now glad to see him back at his former duties. During his absence his work has been carried on most efficiently by Mr. W. 0. Robertson, B.Sc., who has now left for duties elsewhere.

During the short time that Mr. Robertson was with us he took a keen interest in all the phases of school life, and, indeed, we had him as president at one meeting of the " Debater." He was deservedly popular with all his pupils, and we feel sure the best wishes of the whole School go with him. :•

The Annual Gymnastic Assault took place on Friday, 17th March, before a crowded audience of schoolboys, parents, and friends. Several pleasing innovations were introduced in the course of an excellent programme. Of these, the most noteworthy were the games of Badminton, the display of rifle drill by the School " Terriers," and, finally, a recitation by the Sixth's " orator." The most successful part of the regular programme was the high jump, in which four competitors reached 5 feet 3 inches. Yet even this splendid achievement would have been greatly improved had not the competition been interrupted by an accident to A. T. Raitt, one of the successful jumpers—which was afterwards discovered 'to be less serious than was at first feared. Another praiseworthy feature, which betokened skilful instruction and careful drilling, was the unhesitating precision with which the younger boys went through the windings of the maze.

Indeed, the whole performance reflected the greatest credit on the instructor, Mr. Summers.

With this number we give a photograph of the First XV., a team which all will long remember with pride. They have gained the distinction of Junior Champions for the School

for the second time in succession. In their League matches they have not once suffered defeat, while in scoring they have eclipsed all former records by scoring in their eighteen matches 357 points to 53, the most noteworthy score being the 37-0 against " Gordon's." Of the Combined XV. which played and defeated George Heriot's School, Edinburgh, twelve were School men. On the whole, the season has been more notable than even last year's record-breaking season. ".

As a fitting termination to this most brilliant of seasons, a dance, given by the members of the XV., took place on Tuesday, 18th April, during the Easter vacation, in the " Carlton." Twenty-six couples were present, and the time passed most enjoyably. The dance is certain to become an annual event. By all accounts, all who promised to return home early faithfully kept their promise ; we are told that a few were actually home before sunrise.

Cricket is now in full swing, and the journey to the west gate is a path beset with many dangers, such as flying cricket balls, not to mention the youths in headlong pursuit. The First XI.'s prospects are brighter than usual this summer, as five of last season's team are still at School. Unfortunately one of these, W. E. Elmslie, will be unable to play, as he has not yet recovered from the injury he met with during the football season. We heartily sympathise with him, and also with the team, where his loss will considerably weaken both batting and bowling. T. 0. Robson has been elected Captain, and G. R. W. Stewart Secretary. Robson ought to prove a tower of strength to the batting, while the principal trundler will probably be G. Davidson, who topped the averages last summer. The early date of publication prevents us from publishing reports of more than the first match, but it is hoped that the XI. will enjoy as successful a season as last year's team.

A proposal was recently set afoot to start a School Tennis Club, and, by the energy of a few of the senior pupils, the Club is now un fait accompli. At a meeting on 28th April J. F. Mackintosh was elected Captain, while T. B. G. Mackenzie is Secretary, and a court has now been secured in the Duthie Park. Such a club has many advantages of a nature that appeals to schoolboys, and doubtless the Club will meet with all success.

The School Territorials, who gave so efficient a display of drill at the Gymnastic Assault, are eagerly looking forward—those, at any rate, who are also members of the Football XV.—to the annual camp, which takes place this summer at Montrose, that most attractive of all places.

Several new recruits have joined this season, but there are still many eligible, who have abundance of spare time, and who have not yet come forward. It is hoped that before next year there will be a large increase in the number of the School squad.

0 Nothing definite has been arranged as yet with regard to the date of the Annual Swimming Sports, but it is expected that they will take place during the first fortnight of June.

The Swimming Club has lately been getting together members for the coming summer, and is already in a flourishing condition. It is hoped that a large number will become members of the Club, as swimming is a necessary accomplishment as well as a most enjoyable pastime. : 9+

Before the School reopens next autumn several important changes to the grounds and buildings will have been begun. The path to the west gate is to be removed northward to pass along the edge of the big playing-field to the north of the usual position of the goal post of the small field. The fence recently erected on the east side of the small field will be continued all the way round, and in this way it will be possible to have two games of football taking place at the same time. The gate, also, will probably be removed further north. To supply accommodation for the increased number of pupils on the School roll, new wings are to be built at the east and west ends of the School buildings, making, in all, eight new rooms.

The last meeting of the Debating Society is now long past, but the officials may still look back with satisfaction on what has been, without a doubt, the most successful season on record. Although the Society will lose its President, T. 0. Robson, who, by his individual energy and ability, was, in great part, responsible for the success of the past season, several of the leading officials will probably return next year, so that there is every reason to expect that next season's Society will meet with every success. It will, however, be a difficult task to beat session 1910-ii.

The Leaving Certificate and Preliminary Examinations are now only remembered as an unpleasant dream. In the " Prelims." the School earned her usual share of honours, the success of Classical V. being particularly noteworthy. We are still waiting the results of the "Leavings," but the School ought to have no fear of failure. The result, especially in the Higher Grade, ought to be particularly good, if the second highest class are as successful as in the University Examination. Meanwhile, the School is passing through another ordeal—the examination by the inspectors, but we feel sure that she will emerge with her usual number of laurels.

The classrooms of the upper classes of the School are at present sunk in the deepest gloom. This year the pall of the Bursary Competition, which is generally removed before Easter, still hangs over the Sixth and Fifth classes. The gloom is intensified by the brightness of the sunshine all around, but " men must work," and do their best to maintain the honour of the School. In accordance with the changed regulations, the " Comp." begins on 13th June and finishes on the 16th, so as to be over before the Coronation celebrations commence. Our best wishes are with all those who are going to battle for the School in the Competition.

Several additions have lately been made to the Museum, in particular, a pair of golden eagle's eggs, a rare and valuable gift, along with several other sets of eggs, from Mr. R. H. Fenton. We fear that many who pass through the Museum daily, on their way to the Reading Room, never think of examining the many articles, both interesting and curious, with which the cases are filled. We strongly advise them to do so on their next visit to the Reading Room. &

The Librarians wish it to be announced that all books now on loan must be returned by Monday, 5th June. As there have been several additions lately to the number of books in the catalogue, the books have recently been rearranged and renumbered. It is intended to publish a new catalogue before long, provided that a sufficient number become subscribers next year. It is possible, also, that the subscription may be reduced ; so that there ought to be a large increase in the number of subscribers, which, at present, is ridiculously small.

Before laying down the editorial pen for the last time, we would take this opportunity of thanking our colleagues for their ready help at all times in duties which, though commenced with great misgivings, have never been other than most pleasant. We would also express our gratitude to our contributors, who have been so great a help in the production of each number. Finally, we hope that our successor will meet with the same kindness and indulgence and the same willingness to overlook shortcomings, on the part of all our readers.

Now, with a sigh, half of regret, half of relief, we can say : The torch shall be extinguished which hath lit My midnight lamp—and what is writ is writ— Would it were worthier.

Professor JOHN WIGHT DUFF,* M.A., D.Litt. (Durh.), (1877-82), who holds the Chair of Classics in the Armstrong College, Newcastle-on-Tyne, has received the degree of Doctor of Letters in the University of Oxford. His recently-published " Literary History of Rome " was the work submitted in connection with the conferment of the doctorate.

FRANCIS GRANT OGILVIE, C.B., M.A., B.Sc. (1872-74), Secretary to the Board of Education for Science Museums and Geological Section, received in April the LL.D. degree of Edinburgh University.

WILLIAM A. HENDERSON* (1879-90) has been elected president of the London Association of Scottish Chartered Accountants. He is in charge of the London office of Messrs. James Meston & Co., CA The Senatus of the University of Aberdeen has decided to confer the degree of LL.D. on Hon. Sir WILLIAM BISSETBERRY, M.A., M.D. (1848-53), late Speaker of the House of Assembly, Cape Town—one of the Vice-Presidents of the Former Pupils' Club.

The new Queensland University, which has been built at Brisbane, was opened on March 14 by the Chancellor, Sir WILLIAM MACGREGOR,* G.C.M.G., LL.D. (1865-67)— another Vice-President of the Former Pupils' Club.

THEODORE THOMSON,* C.M.G., M.A., M.D. (1867-73), has been promoted senior medical officer under the Local Government Board.

Rev. JAMES A. RUSSELL,* M.A. (1868-71), recently celebrated his semi-jubilee as minister of Causewayend U.F. Church, Aberdeen.

Rev. ADAM FYFE FINDLAY,* M.A. (1880-85), minister of Erskine Church, Arbroath, since igo2, has been called to Bristo U.F. Church, Edinburgh.

CLIFFORD T. BELL, M.B., C.M. (1881), has been appointed resident medical officer at Oldmill Poorhouse, Aberdeen.

THOMAS BEST GIBSON HENDERSON,* CA (1894-19oo), has been appointed general auditor of the Buick Motor Company, Flint, Michigan, U.S.A. This company employs over io,ooo workmen, and Henderson controls an office staff of about 25o.

A. F. VERE STEPHENSON,* A.M.Inst.C.E. (1894-99), has been appointed assistant engineer in the Public Works Department of the Federated Malay States. He will find a large number of Old Boys in the Penang region.

JAMES MASSON HECTOR,* B.Sc. (1889-190o), Lecturer on Agricultural Botany in the University of Leeds, has been appointed examiner in Agricultural Botany and Zoology in Aberdeen University.

JOHN DOUGLAS FIDDES,* MA, B.Sc., M.B., Ch.B. (18;619O2), has been appointed Demonstrator in Anatomy in the University of Sheffield.

JOHN MORRISON, M.A., B.D. (1902-03), has been chosen as minister of the U.F. Church, Kincraig, Inverness-shire.

He has been for three years assistant in the High Church, Aberdeen, having charge of the Gaelic services.

The recent massacre in Assam has special interest for the School, as several Old Boys are resident in the district where the outrage took place, and are members of the Assam Valley Light Horse Volunteers which was mobilised for service against the savage tribes. Among the Old Boys are JAMES BOWER* (1882-95), ROBERT JOHNSTON, M.B. (1881-89), and GEORGE J. CATTO* (1882-89).

JAMES A. BUTCHART* (1889-95), of the Royal Field Artillery, has just received his captaincy. He has been appointed to No. 3 Depot, Seaforth.

CAMPBELL LINDSAY SMITH* (1889-91), who is rapidly making a name for himself as a portrait painter, recently exhibited in Aberdeen eight bust portraits painted on commission. He has lately been working in London on several commissions for portraits there.

WILLIAM A. MACKENZIE (1887) is the author of a book of poems entitled " Rowton House Rhymes," recently pub-

lished by Messrs Blackwood and very favourably reviewed in the press. " The book," says the " Aberdeen Free Press," " describes the experiences of those who have failed in the struggle for existence, and it does so with a force and directness that leave a singularly vivid impression on the mind."

ARTHUR C. HAY,* M.A., (1901-02), Fraserburgh, has been appointed to the staff of Keith Grammar School.

HECTOR R. ADAM,* B.Sc. (1897-1902), has left Johannesburg and is now in the Salisbury Assay Office, Salisbury, Rhodesia.

DONALD T. SKEEN,* M.B. (1895-99), is now on the staff of the West London Hospital.

Rev. THOMAS MURRAY,* M.A. (1862-68), Chaplain to the Forces, is at present resident in Limerick.

J. C. M. LIGERTWOOD* (1903-06) has become a member of the Clµb. For nearly three years he has been employed in the Head Office, Toronto, of the Western Assurance Company.

DAVID ADAM* (1898-1904) is at present with the De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., Kimberley.

JAMES ALAN ST. C. STEWART* (1905-07) is now at Halwatura, a rubber and tea estate near Ingiriya, Ceylon.

WILLIAM MILLER* (1894- ?) is assistant to the Director of Public Works, British West Africa.

WILLIAM NORMAN LESLIE,* M.A., B.L. (1892-95), writes to say that the description of him in the October Magazine was incorrect. The post he holds is Assistant Agent and Auditor of the Southern Punjab Railway Co., Ld., Ferozepore, India He mentions that he has travelled a good deal since leaving the School, having been in the United States, Canada, Australia, a few days at South African ports, and now India. " It looks as if I were settled here [Ferozepore] now, and a bungalow is being built for me. This is a military station and there are usually four regiments here, and a fair number of civilians."

ROBERT DONALD KEITH,* M.A., M.D. (1892-95), has written us from Singapore enclosing subscription. He is Principal of the Straits and Federated Malay States Government Medical School and Lecturer in Physiology. He was home in the spring of 1909, but the cold and wet made him feel so miserable that he was very glad to get away to the East again.

WILLIAM CLARK* (1893-99), who is in the service of the Dundee Coal Company, Talana, Natal, has recently joined

the Club. In a letter to the Secretary he says : " It is now nearly twelve years since I left the School, but the memory of the days spent there is quite green, more especially of the time spent in the Gymnasium and the cricket field, where I occasionally had the satisfaction of taking your middle stump. I may say that I have not yet lost my pristine skill with the ball, and occasionally I have a game here." His brothers, Alexander and Andrew, are both teaching in South Africa, the former in East London and the latter in Cape Town.

JAMES FISHER* (1897-1904), writing from Strathmashie Estate, Bagan Datoh, Perak, and sending a donation to the Record Scheme fund, says that he has now got settled down, and enjoys the life out there immensely. He, like many others abroad, devoured the last Magazine from cover to cover, and especially enjoyed the sketch of Mr. Pope's career. " All I say is, ' Long may he survive to teach drawing and writing in the good old School."'

At the Board of Trade examination WILLIAM R. MACKINTOSH, Jun. (Igoo-O2), Kirkwall, successfully passed as master for foreign trade.

From a Straits newspaper we extract the following:— "The marriage ceremony of Eu SIANG HYE,* M.A.I.M.E., A.I.M.M. (1903-05), and Miss Chuah Chew Suat took place on Friday. At four o'clock the bride cut the wedding cake and then tea was served to the numerous guests. At dinner among the guests were Drs. P. V. Locke, K. T. Khong, K. L. Teng, G. C. Lim, and Messrs. Eu Swee Guat, Cheah Tat Jin, Lim Eow Hooi, J. Gathorne, Khaw Joo Tok, Khoo Sian Tan, Oh Ewe Aik, etc." We wish many years of happiness to the bride and bridegroom. Siang Hye is in charge of the Mining Department of the Imperial Polytechnic College, Nanking, and is Hon. Secretary of the University Club of Nanking.

ALEXANDER VERNON W. CANTLAY* (1903-I0), has joined the Companies' Department in London of Messrs.

Guthrie & Co., the well-known Eastern firm. He will probably soon be sent to the Malay States.

WILLIAM HAY* (1867-71), who has been engaged in sheep-farming in New South Wales since 1873, is one of the Old Boys who have recently been routed out and induced to join the Club. WILLIAM J. JENKYNS* (1894-1903), who served his apprenticeship at the Inverurie branch of the North of Scotland Railway Engineering Works, has been appointed assistant engineer for the Lidgerwood Manufacturing Co. (of London, Glasgow, and New York) in their branch at Sao Paulo, Brazil. They deal with coffee, rice, etc.

Captain A. M. ROSE,* R.A.M.C. (1883-94), returned from Bermuda about a year 'ago to prepare for his "promotion to Major" course at the Royal Army Medical College, after which he returns to Aldershot.

MAURICE J. WILLIAMSON, M.B. (1894-1903), has been,. since November until lately, in the area of the South Wales coal strike, enjoying double pay all the time. He had a game of Rugby against a team with the euphonious title of I nysybwl.

His brother, WILLIAM A. WILLIAMSON (1897-1907), has just commenced his second year at Hawkesbury Agricultural College, N.S.W. He got his "footer" colours last year and has been elected to the football and swimming committees. While in Sydney on vacation he met Beaurepaire, Cecil Healy, and Longworth, Australia's latest swimming wonders.

WILLIAM PATERSON* (1900-03) is one of the most recent Life Members. After leaving the School he went in for electrical engineering, but gave it up after about four years and went out to the Malay States. Within a week of arriving he bought a half share in a rubber estate, and then the boom came, and he has been doing very well, with good prospects. He says that he likes the life out there, although it is rather lonely, but he has six dogs which keep things going. There are also deer, pig, porcupine, etc., which afford good shooting.

OBITUARY. Rev. JAMES JOHNSTONE, M.A. (1844-45), senior minister of Belhelvie U.F. Church, died at Nelson, British Columbia, on 23rd March, at the age of 94. He retired in 1905, after being forty-seven years at Belhelvie.

GEORGE MARR, MA, M.D. (1847-48), Surgeon-Major (retired), Indian Medical Service, died at Aberdeen on i9th April, in his 79th year.

DAVID MACKIE,* M.A., M.D. (1851-52), Brigade-Surgeon, Army Medical Department, died at Aberdeen on 18th April, aged 74. He joined the medical service of the army in 1862, and retired as a Surgeon-Major with the honorary rank of Brigade-Surgeon, A.M.D., in 1882.

JOHN WALLACE (1853-55), late rural missionary of the United Free Church of Scotland, died at Aberdeen on 12th March, aged 73. He attended the Grammar School with a view to going in for the ministry, but had to give up the idea owing to the death of his father. For a long time he carried on a business as blacksmith at Old Deer, until in 1889 he was appointed a missionary by the Free Church to carry on work among farm-servants. He retired from this position about three years ago on account of failing health.

FRANCIS CHARLES KEITH BROTCHIE (1862-66) died at Portsmouth on loth February, aged 59. He formerly carried on a grocery business in Aberdeen.

JAMES GRAY (1869-71), farmer, died at Auchedly, Tarves, on 7th March, aged 57.

Captain WALTER WILLIAM ADAM (1878-79) died in Aberdeen on 21st April at the age of 46. He served his sea apprenticeship with Messrs. George Thompson & Son on the famous Aberdeen " clipper " " Thermopylae." For a number of years he was a shipmaster in the service of Messrs. Watts, Watts, & Company, London.

WILLIAM FYFE (1882-87) died at Weston-super-Mare on 24th March. He was associated with the management of the famous Kemnay quarries, belonging to Messrs. John Fyfe & Sons, Ltd. THOMAS LIGERTWOOD, C.B., M.D. (1842-45), formerly a surgeon in the Army Medical Department and late physician and surgeon to the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, died in London on loth May, aged 81. He entered the Army in 1851 and served in the Crimea, being present at the battles of Alma and Inkermann and the assault on the Redan. He was mentioned in despatches and received the medal with three clasps and the Turkish medal, and was appointed a Knight of the Legion of Honour.

Random Notes.

The fatal day draws nigh ; in fear and trembling we live or seem to live, for 'tis like an evil dream, which attacks us day and night, haunting our sleep and in grim earnest appearing to us awake. Our brain is in turmoil, our senses are deranged through undue stress, and our actions and thoughts display our self-occupation and absentmindedness. How we envy our juniors, whose trials are over for another year, when homeward we trudge our weary way, and leave the field and nets to the happy and secure cricketers ! No more those joys await us ; we must pass them by without more than a longing glance. We must go home to discourse with Valerius Maximus, and criticise the philosophy of Plato, or treat of " sine and arc and right ascension." The Bursary Competition approaches !

So, dear reader, we request your indulgence if we fail to entertain you on this occasion and if our matter is shorter than usual. If you want to be really amused, pay a visit to Room I. There you will see yawning chasms and will be in danger of being swallowed up ; or if you escape Charybdis, you may possibly fall into the merciless grasp of the monster Scylla, in the shape of a master who tries to keep his pupils awake by making puns. But all our masters experience this difficulty. The other day our expositor of classics and politics was dilating on the inspiring effect of Sophocles' verse. " These lines, I feel, awaken every nerve in my body, and arouse my warlike enthusiasm." And from the back desk came, in stertorous tones, a deep snore.

We have received a curious letter addressed to a master (not of this School, of course), which has by accident fallen into our hands, and which we cannot refrain from publishing : " Dear Sir,-I have hesitated to write you this note, but I will feel obliged if you will pull Johnny's left ear instead of his right, which has grows much larger than the other."

We must congratulate all those who, by their efforts, made the Gymnastic Assault so successful. Our opinion is that it improves every year under the energetic and enthusiastic management of our instructor. The brilliant display of badminton has borne fruit by its inducement to form a tennis club at the School. But the " piece de resistance " was the overpowering recitation of a member of the Sixth. Well known amongst his companions for his amorous propensities, he expatiated on his favourite theme with such ardent fervour that he brought tears into the eyes of many young ladies present.

The session is now drawing to its close, but most of the pupils of the present year will be returning to School after the summer vacation. To those are the following words addressed. The four hard-working Librarians, whose nerves have been sadly shaken by the continuous strain of attending to the wants of the huge mass of members, have gone through the whole list of books, and have rearranged and renumbered them in their proper order. This work occupied three days' hard labour (no option), with but slight intervals for refection. What refreshments, liquid or solid, were consumed I dare not tell, for I might be dismissed from my onerous post of Librarian ; so I shall be content with saying that each gentleman was able to leave the premises with the help of his " understandings." One of them, rather youthful, was rather in a sorry plight, but his companions managed to smuggle him past a vigilant constable. The chief Librarian asks me to thank a certain F.P. for his generous assistance, and the janitor for his fine display of language, his command of which did surprise us. And thereby hangs a tale. He showed repentance, however, and all's well that ends well.

Everyone is eagerly awaiting Empire Day, when the School, will be dismissed early in the forenoon. But none are so expectant as the Sixth. And why? There is the secret, which I am forbidden to disclose. Only this shall I say : if anyone hears the manly tones of " Rule Britannia" floating from Room I., he need not be surprised. An indubitable pleasure is in store for the School. " Wait and see."

The Sixth are longing for the sight of some little urchins from the Lower School to relieve the gloom which has settled on them. Small boys will oblige by going to the children's playground and raising unearthly yells. Hercules junior will soon appear and personally conduct them to Room I., where they will be warmly welcomed and supplied with free instruction in the classics.

The competition for the Smith Medal for the best Latin version was held on Friday, 5th May. Members of Classical V. are wondering who wrote " faceretur." " Worthy of many stripes " is their verdict ; but, happily, members of the Sixth are immune from such punishment. " Speluncam Dido dux et Troianus eandem deveniunt."

General Dido and the Trojan reach the same cave. Nothing in the world is new, not even suffragettes.

Then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel And shining morning face, creeping like snail Unwillingly to school.

This famous sketch of one of our noble selves was not in all respects an exact portrait of the " Grammarians " on a certain fine morning in March. True, the " satchel and shining morning face " were there : the Grammar boy never forgets the shining morning face, whatever his countenance may be after the dust and turmoil of the playground.

"Whining" does not come within our horizon, for the genuine Grammar breed does not whine. Nor, on that day at least, was he " creeping like snail unwillingly to school :" instead, passers-by were filled with astonishment at the unusual alertness and hilarity of all, whether their inches and years were few or many, who trooped so expeditiously and so eagerly in the direction of the School. Nobody was late : some who had never before been within the gate till the last stroke of the bell were in School that morning when the bell began. In the clear sunny light, too, the sign of rejoicing floated gaily from the top of the flagstaff. As the masters filed into the Hall, cheer followed cheer in quick succession, rising to one deafening shout when the Rector appeared. And why all this jubilation? Because, thanks to the morning papers, we had learned that the name of H. F. M. S. stood in the list of those destined by the Senatus of our University for the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws ; and we who know him better than anybody else were unfeignedly glad at the decision of the Senatus.

When, in a lull of the applause, the Rector at last found an opportunity of speaking, he told us, with characteristic modesty, that the conferring of the degree appealed to him most of all as an honour to the School. It is indeed that, and we value it very highly on that account. But it is, in addition, a well-merited tribute to the Rector as a scholar and a gentleman.

We wonder if, even among ourselves, the full extent of his learning is known. We will not recall his own achievements as a schoolboy or when he was " in statu pupillari " at Cambridge, up to his First Class in the Classical Tripos.

But we note that, after graduating, Dr. Simpson did not, like some, imagine that he had attained unto all knowledge.

He seems to have said with Solon, rIpcio-Kur a' dd Toxxa saaowagEpos.

Accordingly, from 1886 onwards he has given convincing proof of his studies in the long array of books published, and of articles contributed to periodicals and to proceedings of learned societies. Do you wish to have information on Rune Prime-Staves, or on Scandinavian Wooden Almanacs, or on the Scots in East Prussia? Then the Rector's antiquarian and historical researches will enlighten you. Of his books we may mention two translations from the Danish —Worsaae's "Prehistory of the North" and Bahnson's "Ethnographical Museums"; the elaborate edition of Wishart's "Deeds of Montrose" (The Great Marquis) ; the edition of Scott's " Legend of Montrose," thrice reprinted since its first issue ; and, not to enumerate more, that perpetual source of interest and delight to " Grammarians," " Bon Record," where the story of the School from earliest times is felicitously narrated.

It is needless here to dilate on the Rector's scholarship as displayed in his teaching ; and equally needless to dwell upon his gentlemanly bearing in the various relations in which, as head of the School, he stands to the members thereof. Even those boys—luckily few in number—who, on odd occasions, have painful interviews with him, interviews over which it is best to draw a veil, must feel and say, adapting Goldsmith, if severe in aught, The love he bears to learning is in fault.

Every head of a school has a difficult post to fill ; and we all admire Dr. Simpson's steady and whole-hearted aiming at the physical, mental, and moral upbuilding of the School in whatsoever things are true and honest and pure and lovely and of good report. To elaborate this remark is quite unnecessary : " si monumentum quaeris, circumspice."

The corridor and the playground exhibit the Rector's zeal for physical training ; the Library and the Museum reveal another side of his activities ; the grand Hall—so unlike the severely bare place of former days—has grown a veritable Valhalla, which, since " to look on noble forms makes noble," cannot fail to be an incentive to all " Grammarians " to become duxes, or even rectors, or perhaps pious benefactors.

school, their connection should cease. Hence his inauguration of the Former Pupils' Club, which in Aberdeen has earned that sincerest flattery—imitation. Then, we hope soon to see our grounds adorned with the effigies of Byron in bronze. But, apart from that, the Rector may say to his soul, "Exegi monumentum aere perennius,"

when he remembers that pupils, past and present, have engraved on their hearts a deep and abiding memorial of what he has done, and is doing, for the Grammar School of Aberdeen.

Presentation by the Staff.

When the announcement was made that the degree of LL.D. was to be conferred upon the Rector by the University of Aberdeen, it was received with gratification by all connected with the School—teachers and pupils alike ; and the members of the staff felt that the honour to be bestowed upon their Rector should be marked in some worthy manner.

An interesting ceremony, therefore, took place in the Library of the School, when the presentation was made to Mr Simpson of LL.D. robes. There was a full attendance of the staff, and several outside friends were present. Anyone accustomed to the somewhat austere look of our Library on ordinary occasions would have been surprised at the transformation that was wrought in a few hours. For the ladies on our staff had laid their heads together, and, with characteristic energy and thoughtfulness, had changed this haunt of The Muses into a charming drawing-room. The tables were all covered with snowy cloths, on which gleamed silver urns and silver teapots, and everywhere were beautiful spring flowers. In short, the ladies had provided a splendid tea for all who were present. The occasion had a further interest in being 'the first on which the staff of the School, along with their friends, had met together in a social way.

Dr. Charles M`Leod presided, and amongst those present were Mr. and Mrs. Morland Simpson and family, Mrs. M`Leod, Mr. and Mrs. Murison, Mr. and Mrs. James Davidson, Mr. and Mrs. Spiers, Mr. and Mrs. Pope, Mr. and Mrs. Dunbar, Messrs. Middleton, Knox, Hay, Edward, Philip, and

The Chairman said he had been asked to welcome the past members of the staff who had come to join them on the occasion. Their kindly friend Mr. Pope was to say a few words to them. Mr. Pope had had experience of many distinguished Rectors of the Grammar School, and the present Rector was not an unworthy successor of those in the long line of Rectors who had gone before him—(applause).

Mr. Samuel Pope, in making the presentation, said it was his pleasant duty, as the oldest master in the Grammar School, and as spokesman of the whole staff, to congratulate Mr. Simpson on having the honour of LL.D. conferred on him by the University of Aberdeen—(applause). The staff and the pupils received the intimation with the liveliest satisfaction. It would be presumptuous in him to say anything as to Mr. Simpson's qualifications for the honour. He was sure it was thoroughly well deserved, and would be some recompense for much hard and self-denying labour during the past eighteen years. Thanks mainly to Mr Simpson's unceasing care and enthusiasm, the School had done, and was doing, excellent work, and its pupils had earned distinction and carried off many honours at the University, in the Indian Civil Service, and elsewhere—(applause). Mr. Simpson had done much to foster a love for the School in the pupils long after they had left its walls. To him belonged the honour of being the pioneer in starting the Former Pupils' Club, thus keeping the Old Boys in loving touch with the old School. Before the formation of the Former Pupils' Club in Aberdeen and London their pupils drifted into the big world and were utterly lost sight of, but now they had a habitation and a name, and took a lively interest in the School and its doings—(applause). Imitation was said to be the sincerest form of flattery, and Mr. Simpson's idea had been appropriated by quite a number of the schools in Aberdeen, which had now their Former Pupils' Clubs. The staff deemed it an honour to have the privilege of presenting Mr.

Simpson on that interesting occasion with LL.D. robes, and he was sure he voiced all their wishes when he expressed the hope that Mr. Simpson might be long spared to wear them, and to continue there as the honoured head of that historic School with a past of seven centuries (applause). He had now the pleasure of asking Miss Mackie to robe Mr. Simpson—(applause).

Miss Mackie then performed the robing ceremony.

Mr. Simpson, who was enthusiastically received, said he found it difficult to find words suitable to express to them his heartfelt gratitude and sense of the honour they had done him on that occasion. Mr. Pope had spoken of the years he had been with them—long years they seemed to him, passing already the average record, in length, of previous Rectors during the last 400 years. And yet it was not half of Mr. Pope's own length of service in the School.

Looking back to the time when he first came there it gave him pleasure to recognise that of the seventeen members of the staff who were there when he came he still counted as his colleagues no fewer than nine—six masters and three ladies—who were with him when he opened the session in i 893—(applause). The School had grown in numbers, and the staff had grown. He was deeply sensible of the honour they had conferred upon him. Some of those who had formerly been colleagues but had passed from the School into other walks of life had honoured him on that occasion by their presence. He hoped he might be spared still a few years to merit the honour bestowed upon him by them and by the University. At present he was only doctor-designate, and therefore not entitled to wear that finery, in which he hardly knew himself—(laughter). It was not merely these robes that he owed to their kindness, but the degree.

Anything he could have done would not have merited the honour, and it was for the School chiefly that he valued the honour.

When he said the School, he meant especially the staff of the School.

It was one of the lessons he learned under his former head, the late Dr. Potts, of Fettes, that the interests of the School were the interests of the staff which served it. He had tried to keep that principle in view, and he was quite sure he was ascribing no undue honour to the staff when he said that the merit of its success among the secondary schools of Scotland was due to the staff of the School. Therefore, in a very peculiar sense, he owed not only the robes to them but the degree. It had been a great gratification to him that

so many friends—many in unexpected quarters—had expressed their pleasure at the news that the degree was to be conferred upon him—(applause). It was to the School that he attributed, in a preponderant degree, the honour that was to be bestowed upon him. It was no small satisfaction to him that this honour had come at a time when it might be of some use to the School. He valued this recognition by the University because of the connection of the School with the University. There had been times when he somewhat felt the want of the close personal link which could only exist between alumni of the University and their own Alma Mater. He thanked them very heartily for their kind invitation to his wife and children to be present. He was sure that would be to them, as to him, a red-letter day in their memories—(applause). He thanked them very heartily for their hospitality on that occasion—(applause). He could not say more without showing his feelings more than he cared to do on an occasion like that, and he was not one of those who wore their hearts on their sleeves. But he was profoundly thankful to them for the honour they had bestowed upon him—for that valuable gift and the way it had been given, and for their help, which had lightened many a difficult task--(applause). He hoped in the future to continue to do his best for the famous old School—(applause).

Mr. G. Middleton said they all agreed that this honour was worthily bestowed. Mr. Simpson had been eighteen years in the School, and the position of the School showed that he had been a great success—(applause). The position of Rector of the School, one of the most important in Scotland, was one of great responsibility, and Mr. Simpson had shown himself to be the very man for the place. The staff of the School and the community were much indebted to the School Board for what it had done to make the School one of the foremost in Scotland, but without an excellent head, the success which had attended it would have been impossible—(applause). They knew Mr. Simpson's position as a scholar and writer. They knew the brilliant degree he took at Cambridge, and his work on " The Marquis of Montrose " and other works. They offered their heartiest thanks to Mrs. Simpson as well as to Mr. Simpson—(applause). Mrs. Simpson had interested herself in the success of the School and in the boys of the School and the staff. She had great tact and kindliness—(applause). They hoped that long years of prosperity and health might be granted Mr. and Mrs. Simpson—(applause).

The Rector returned thanks on behalf of Mrs. Simpson.

Mr. M. Mackie joined in the congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Simpson, and moved a vote of thanks to those who sang in the course of the proceedings—Mrs. Murison, Mr. C. Soutar, and Mr. George E. Hay. Mr. W. Murison proposed a vote of thanks to the ladies who provided the tea, while Mr. J. Morrison moved a similar compliment to the visitors, and the Chairman proposed thanks to Madame Patti Hicks, who played the accompaniments.

Mr. G. Hein offered his congratulations to Mr. Simpson.

He thought the hard-working teachers deserved such honours more than some of the country parsons—(laughter and applause). He hoped many more honours would follow in this way—(applause).

The proceedings closed with a vote of thanks to the Chairman, proposed by Mr. M. Mackie.

Presentation by the School.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, 2gth March, an interesting ceremony was held in the Hall. After the bell had sounded at 3 o'clock the whole School assembled under the chairmanship of Dr. Macleod, who was accompanied on the platform by the Rector and T. 0. Robson. Mrs Simpson had also been invited to attend. In addressing the School, Dr. Macleod said they had met to honour the Rector on the occasion of the honorary degree conferred on him. The teachers had already presented the Rector with robes, and, he wished to say, the boys (Grammar School boys always knew to do the right thing at the right time) felt that their turn had now come. They were acting on their own initiative, without assistance from the teachers. He called upon Mr. Robson, who, as President of the Debating Society, had been elected spokesman by his schoolfellows. In a concise but fitting speech, Mr. Robson spoke of the respect in which the Rector was held by all his pupils, and of the strong bond of affection and interest which existed between them. He asked the Rector to accept these robes as a token of the respect and esteem of the boys, who were as sensible to the honour as the worthy recipient, and expressed the fervent hope that their owner would long live to wear them. Then, accompanied by Mr. Hyslop on the piano, the School heartily sang the chorus, " He's a jolly good fellow." In reply the Rector thanked all the boys who had presented him with that

beautiful gift. Mr. Robson had touched the right note when he said that the honour was an honour to the School as well as to himself personally ; and he was sure that every boy present felt this as deeply as himself. It was seventy-seven years now since such a gown had been presented to the Rector of the School, and the last one was still preserved. He thanked the boys heartily once more ; but he felt that mere words were inadequate to express his intense gratitude.

Remarking that Grammar School boys were nothing if not chivalrous, the Chairman called upon Mr. Valentine to perform another pleasant duty. In a few gracious words Mr. Valentine said the School thought that Mrs. Simpson, who doubtless was more delighted than anyone else at the honour conferred on her husband, should have a small gift as a memento of the occasion. He had great pleasure in asking her to accept a silver epergne as a token of the universal esteem in which she was held by the School. Dr. Simpson briefly replied on behalf of his wife, and the Chairman then announced that the proceedings were at an end.

Our Letter=Box. A New Member in New Zealand.

The following letter has been received by the Secretary of the F.P. Club from George Bertie Gauld (1878-82), who is accountant at the New Zealand Branch of the Colonial and Mutual Life Assurance Society, Ltd. :— Box 121, Wellington, N.Z., loth January, 1911.

Dear Sir,—I do not know at whose instance you traced and wrote me as per your favour of 1st ult., but I am none the less obliged to you for your communication and for the October number of the School Magazine which accompanied it.

I was not aware of the existence of either the Magazine or the F.P. Club, but I am heartily in accord (Bon-Accord!) with both enterprises, and have pleasure to enclose herewith los., being four years' subscriptions in advance.

I was particularly interested to find on pp. 21 and 22, in Alexander Forbes' article, " School Life under Melvin," a reference to, I believe, my maternal uncle, James Horne ! His father (my grandfather) was Sheriff's Officer in Aberdeen,

and the James Home in question is not dead, as stated, but is Commodore of the " Loch " Line, and is in command at present of the ship, "Loch Garry," usually trading between Glasgow and Melbourne.

From "A Rolling Stone."

Herbert A. Bremner (i 893-95), in the course of a letter to the Secretary from Melbourne, says : "I duly received your leaflet and Grammar School Magazine a few weeks ago, and also your second note. I see by your address that you have been a home-bird. I'm afraid I've been a bit of a rolling stone myself. North and South America, Mexico, Peru, and now Australia—I have tramped weary and sore-footed in them all. I am at present engaged as chief draughtsman with a firm of engineers in Melbourne, but have been over a good part of Australia for them. Your first letter had been following me up country in New South Wales, and I only got it a short time ago. By the way, I thought it was only the famous men of the Old Boys that you kept in touch with, not the happy-go-lucky sort like me. I don't think it would be worth while for me to become a Life Member, but I enclose herewith the sum of one guinea, which will keep me supplied with your valuable paper for a year or so. I nearly shuffled off this mortal coil last summer. I was superintending the erection of a factory in Sydney, and a bricklayer's labourer dropped a hod of bricks on my head and stove it in. I came round four days later in a ward in Sydney Hospital. They kept me there for a few weeks and patched me up, but I wasn't a beauty to look at for some considerable time. Bricks do make a mess of a fellow's face when they come down 26 feet. What was it Mr. McLeod used to say ?—at + I at2—I forget. Bush life rubs these reminiscences out of one. Remember me kindly to all of the old masters at the ' Good Old Grammar.' " In a P.S. Bremner adds : " You must be the same impatient beggar you used to be at School, to send a second leaflet to me so soon after the first."-H. B.

From a Ceylon Rubber Estate.

Alec Watt (1901-06), who recently went out to an estate an Ceylon, has sent a most interesting letter to the Secretary.

After telling about his arrival and first experiences, he goes on: " My work is easy enough and consists mainly of supervising the work being done, weighing tea and rubber, and, more particularly, attending to the tapping of trees, which -the coolies are very careless at, if not watched, injuring the bark. I have 370 odd coolies—men, women, and children— and it is rather a difficulty to settle all their disputes and keep them in order, as I can speak very little as yet, and there is only one man in the tea factory who can speak English.

"There is no tapping of rubber trees this month [February], and, therefore, the work is somewhat slack, but in March we shall be very busy, as I have 'thousands of new trees to cut and will have twice as many coolies at work on rubber. " One coolie taps zoo trees a day and only every second day is a tree tapped, which gives each coolie 400 trees, and I shall have thirty-two coolies to watch—so you can see the number of trees under supervision. This estate is only in its infancy in rubber, as the year's estimate is only 15,ooo lb.

In two years from now it will be over 40,000 lb., if not 5o,ooo lb., annually. " Of course there is tea here too, and we make over 200 lb. tea per day, and as it takes 4 lb. green leaf to make one pound of tea, you can see what a number must pluck. The women do the tea-plucking. " My hours are practically as I wish to arrange them, and commence at 6 a.m. and go on, with a long mid-day rest, till 4 p.m., when natives stop, and it is well after five before I am at the bungalow for good. I have a splendid view over plantations for seven miles, and, beyond that, the sea. Also from my dining-room, looking inland, I can, in the early mornings, see the top of Adam's Peak standing out with the rising sun behind."

Books that have Influenced the School.

THIS is the first of May, and I believe it may be a holiday kept now in the Grammar School as it was in my time. I recollect in 1869 Dr Beverley saying it would be so kept, as he believed it had been since the earliest days of the School, and that now numbers a goodly tale of centuries. Why it was so kept he said he had failed to discover, and what had baffled him is not likely to be solved by me or anyone else.

Only, he said, it was not the beginning of Spring. I hope it is still a holiday, and I observe the town, no doubt following judiciously our lead, has decided to keep it as the Aberdeen Holiday., The silence, accordingly, is very great. I had known it at seven in the morning, and it quite brought back old days. The milk carts had ceased to roll. I have had a respite of some hours from two young pianists. One, overhead, has been about a year at " The Maiden's Prayer," and another, over the way, has drummed at the " Merry Widow " waltz for about the same time. There is an air of deep peace all around, ac sic mihi pace Immensae nimiaeque licet si dicere plebis, Totam hodie Romam Circus capit.

By which I mean to infer with Juvenal that all Aberdeen is at Pittodrie or in the country, and to-night will be in the Palace Theatre of Varieties. At this moment I feel sure the papers are setting the time-honoured paragraphs up in type about the record exodus from the city, the big day at the Joint Station, and the percentage of the citizens that preferred the Bay of Nigg and the Beach. I am sure this will bring a familiar thrill to the memories of Old Boys abroad.

And from 1911 to 1868 is a good distance. Having filled up a Census paper lately, I compute that is forty-three years ago. But, like Longfellow, I remember the gleams and glooms that dart Across the schoolboy's brain ; And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts

there. My memory is as good as ever. But the leaves are falling fast with the class, for a great part of it is dead.

The subject of books that have influenced the School is a wide one. In some respects it necessarily limits itself to the books that have influenced the writer. Books are certainly more common now than they were in my time ; by which I do not precisely mean that there was less reading then than now. But it is none the less true to say that something like a revolution in schoolbooks has happened. The educational publisher was not yet practically in the land, and possibly Chambers, Nelson, Oliver and Boyd supplied all the wants of Scotland. The Edinburgh Academy controlled the issue and printing of its own books. There was also a Scottish School Book Association in existence, for it was their Latin Grammar that we used. The question of the schoolbooks for Aberdeen in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries is very confusing. Few, if any, have survived, having been thumbed out of existence in the daily use ; but it may be taken as certain that the Aberdeen printers, Raban, Forbes, and others, could not have supplied the demand for the town and North. Robert Chambers satisfied himself that, as far as Edinburgh was concerned, and no doubt the same holds good of Aberdeen, the schools were fed by the cheap products of the Dutch presses of the time.

But they seem to have all vanished. Only one copy of the first edition of Ruddiman's " Elements " in 1714 is known to exist. It belonged to Sir Walter Scott, and had been given by him to a collector, Sir James Gibson Carmichael, I think, at whose death or sale, a year or two ago, it was noticed. I remember having carefully noted at the University the fact that in some remote regions in the North lads had little or no access to books of any kind, and, influenced by that knowledge, I suggested some months ago to the private adviser of Mr. Carnegie that it would be an excellent thing if he could present to some thirty or so of the poorer schools in the Highlands and Islands a set of Dent's 50o volumes of the Everyman's Library. Just at this moment my young persecutor upstairs has commenced a cannonade, out of all time and tune, which is meant for " The Lament of Flora Macdonald." It brings to my recollection one man I knew very well that came from the region of the second stanza, and spoke Gaelic. What books at home would have been to that man few only could have told. The indomitable energy of a man over forty starting, before the day of the Carnegie Trust, on an eight years' career for the ministry

still fills me with admiration for the praefervidum ingeniunz of the North. I believe he is dead, for I never was able to• trace him for our Class List in Arts.

The very sight of the Magazine to-day brings vividly to memory the difference of ours. I met the Editor some few days ago. It was not issued by authority. It circulated below decks—or desks, was written on version paper stitched with worsted, was not read by troops of Old Boys, but was. limited in circulation to about a half-dozen keen hands.

What boys read determines them far more than what they grind. Charles Lamb, in his recollections of his old school, Christ's Hospital, has described what went on in his day: " We had classics of our own, without being beholden to. `insolent Greece or haughty Rome,' that passed current among us—' Peter Wilkins,' The Adventures of the Hon. Captain Robert Boyle,' The Fortunate Blue-Coat Boy,' and the like. Or we cultivated a turn for mechanic or scientific operations, making little sun-dials of paper, or weaving those ingenious parentheses called cat-cradles, or making dry peas to dance upon the end of a tin pipe." All those operations I have also gone through. But the masters were too sharp to allow such reading below desks. I recollect so reading only one. I see it yet. It was a little abridged copy of Smollett's " Roderick Random," belonging to Samuel Reid, brother of Sir George.

Of all schoolbooks ever issued in Scotland, with the single exception of Ruddiman's " Latin Grammar," I fancy I am correct in saying none has ever in influence surpassed' Mackenzie's " History of Scotland." We at the Grammar School had White's ' History of Scotland," which I see perfectly yet, published in pretty small type by Oliver & Boyd in the High Street of Edinburgh. But before that we had all been reared on Mackenzie. It is not too much to say that the present race of Scotsmen, at home and in the Colonies, is the product of Mackenzie, who has influenced them more than any book, even the " Tales of a Grandfather," has done.

Thousands that know and knew the book possibly never knew who wrote it for the Nelsons. It appeared in many forms, and has even been boiled down in Royal Readers. I had the library edition as a prize in the First Class. I have a copy of the 19437 reprint from his son last year, with a long account of his father. The Rev. James Mackenzie was the eldest son of William Mackenzie, the parish schoolmaster of Barry, who in 1843 lost his office by adhering to the FreeChurch. He was educated at the High School of Dundee,.

and entered St Andrews at fifteen, being the youngest ordained minister of the Church. He died at Dunfermline, on June 1 0, 1869, as minister of the Abbey Free Church there.

He was thus by adoption a fellow-townsman of Mr. Andrew Carnegie, and he misses no opportunity of working in a reference to the " auld grey town " and its Abbey, or of quoting the Chartulary, with its fifty estates and lordships of Dunfermline, Kirkcaldy, and Musselburgh. All the great names in Scottish history stand out grandly in the little book, and his national teaching is resolute and sound. The present movement for Scottish Home Rule is traced to its influence, and the leading promoters in Parliament and among Colonial Premiers arc in the truest sense Old Boys and F.P.'s of James Mackenzie. Under the disastrous influence and action of the Education Department, which for the last thirty years has been a curse and blight to education in Scotland, nothing but confused hubbubs and disastrous ineptitudes about Anglo-Saxons, Wars of the Roses, Henry the Eighth's wives, and purely parochial English rigmarole has been served up in schools. The result has been a generation trained in total ignorance of their own country upon the innutritious diet of worthless and colourless compilations. In 1886, when the fortunes of the oldest of the Scottish Universities were at the very lowest ebb, and a Quincentenary seemed the wildest of dreams, the late Professor Alleyne Nicholson, the naturalist, said to me with deep feeling, " Better for St. Andrews and her great memories to perish for ever than for some of us, who have suffered with her and for her, to stand by and see her grinding poverty." I said that for the sake of Mackenzie I would risk an appeal to Mr. Carnegie, then practically an unknown man of means, who some time before had been patriotically asociating himself with the illustrious dead in the Abbey of Dunfermline. The reply from New York was to the effect that one day would shew he was not to forget. Certainly he has kept his word, and Mackenzie and his book had not worked in vain. I hope the Quincentenary in September will not forget him.

Little they know of Scotland who only—the Scottish Department know !

Of all my earliest schoolbooks I have preserved only a Chambers' edition of " Caesar." Gibbon in his immortal autobiography has entered the fact that " not long since I was possessed of the dirty volumes of Phmdrus and Cornelius Nepos, which I painfully construed and darkly understood.

tive that Caesar for boys is. The style is the last result of finish and reserve, and the thinking is mature in the extreme, far beyond boys. But the influence of Caesar on every class must be very great. No greater desideratum exists than the worthy edition of the Commentaries—not, of course, as a school book—with all the geography and philology brought up to date. French scholars have long worked on it as a mine of national history, but the results of their labours as a whole should exist in available form for all, with maps, plans, and illustrations. Why not at least tell a boy that the Garonne is the Gairn, literally ? It is a matter of deep regret that so many should know Caesar only through the vaguest recollections of the Latin Grammar.

It must be an epoch in the life of every boy when he first makes the acquaintance of Hannibal. If he is untouched by the immortal Carthaginian, who won the battle of Cann at thirty-one--the only great Semitic genius in war—he should be expelled from the Grammar School and declared a lunatic. There is positively no hope for him.

Collier's " Histories of Greece and Rome " were in my time ; another mistake, I am convinced. They were too slight in texture, and so lost the geographical flavour that can be given only in a full narrative. " The nobility of the Spencers," Gibbon declares, " has been illustrated and enriched by the trophies of Marlborough ; but I exhort them to consider the ' Fairy Queen' as the most precious jewel of their coronet." Had I any influence with either teachers or taught, I should exhort them to consider the " History of Rome " as the greatest of all their possessions, and Hannibal therein as the Koh-i-noor and particular gem. We were fortunate in the use of Professor William Ramsay's (of Glasgow) " Roman Antiquities." No more admirable work was ever constructed for advanced teaching than the full text of the book, which has now reached nearly the thirtieth edition, and in its present revision by Professor Lanciani still flourishes in immortal youth. I have heard old Glasgow men wax enthusiastic over Ramsay's teaching, and declare it was a pleasure even to see him physically, a handsome man with a fine presence. We were sadly hampered in my time by the lack of proper wall maps for the full study of history and geography. Indeed the School was simply starved by the Town Council, who had no ideas but economy—without efficiency. How different Pillans' capital little book on Classical Geography could have been with proper illustrative material, such as the crossing of the Alps by Hanni-

bal ! " Save up as much money," said Dr. Guthrie, " as will take you there. I say to everybody—see the Alps before you die."

I fear it will not please our distinguished Old Boy, the Rev. Dr. Whyte, to learn that for forty years I have never heard one Aberdonian make the slightest reference either to " The Pilgrim's Progress " or to " Robinson Crusoe." In England such a thing would sound almost incredible, yet I am ashamed to say it is a true bill. I cannot account for it.

I should like to see them both used as schoolbooks. It is deplorable that in religion and education the greatest forces should remain unused. Dr. Arnold was sound, very sound, on Hannibal, and none the less emphatic about Bunyan.

I cannot trust myself," he said, " to read the account of Christian going up to the Celestial Gate, after his passage through the River of Death." After a fresh reading he declared, " I have always been struck by its piety : I am now struck equally, or even more, by its profound wisdom." What a mine of geographical and moral teaching is contained in " Robinson Crusoe "! These modern Physical Geographies positively make me sick. Not one boy in a hundred can follow the reasoning. I have Sir Walter Scott on my side when he says " he despised and detested the whole generation of books in which the attempt is made to convey accurate notions of scientific minutiae, delighting cordially, on the other hand, in those of the preceding age, which, addressing themselves chiefly to the imagination, obtain through it, as he believed, the best chances of stirring our graver faculties also." But so long as these ignorant and undesirable aliens called School Inspectors are allowed to be at large, without police surveillance, what chance have sound ideas and original teachers ! Did not one of these gentry, I am informed, say some time ago that the teaching of Shakespeare in the Grammar School should have been illustrated through the contrast with—Ibsen? The Department should keep an eye on that man. He has a future—as a dangerous lunatic.

How singular is the almost total disappearance of " The Arabian Nights"! Except in Sinbad and in Ali Baba it seems to have passed away. What a curious fate for the -great book ! Once universal in Europe, and now sunk " to point a moral or adorn a tale," or even a topical song in a pantomime.

"Uncle Tom's Cabin," still an American evergreen, seems almost forgotten in Aberdeen. I can not learn what

boys read now, or if pirates and Indians are still popular_ " The Times " seems dangerously conservative in its leadings to that side, but it also manages to display its usual ignorance. In reviewing, some weeks ago, a book on " The Barbary Corsairs "—it looks like the allusive inaccuracy of Andrew Lang—it bursts out : " No boy of taste would hesitate to extol the dashing careers of Morgan and Van Horn, or the great Montbars, or even those minor rascals of the skull and crossbones, Paul Jones, Captain Kidd, and John Gow." Paul Jones never was a pirate, as every Scotsman and reader of Fenimore Cooper knows, but an American privateer.

John Gow is the pirate about Stromness on whose doings Scott founds his own novel of " The Pirate." I never heard of the great Montbars and Van Horn. The others are old friends, with whom in bygone days I have shipped under the Jolly Roger.

Let me say a word for Bain's " Grammar " and " Rhetoric."'

To the older generation they were not only known but bone of their bone. I believe they are not used now, and in the race of educational books I regret this. They are emphatically good things, but they are not for boys. I would have them used for reference and in the higher classes, with large dictation extracts and compendiums of their salient features.

I question if "Gulliver's Travels" can ever truly be a boy's book. Swift, of all men, did not write for boys, and the whole flavour is lost apart from the historical setting. Let me be emphatic on one point. We all know Gibbon's famous eulogy on " Tom Jones," that it would " outlast the Escurial ". (which, by the way, everybody is supposed to know is the largest granite building in the whole world except the present Marischal College in Broad Street!) " and the doubleheaded eagle of the House of Austria." I am glad to say it never was even heard of, and, apart from experts in the history of the novel, it can well afford to remain such. During all my five years at the School I never heard one wrong word or saw one wrong book. I can not recall a single millionaire or bloated capitalist, but I think it speaks volumes for the School that this fact can be recorded of it, with perfect truth.

It reminds me of what Dr. Livingstone says of one of his ancestors, who came, like Lord Ullin, from " Ulva's Isle."

When dying, he called his family around him. " I have searched diligently," he said, " through all the traditions of our family, and I never could find that there was a dishonest man among us. If, therefore, any of you should take to dis-honest ways, it will not be because it runs in the blood."

Books that have Influenced the School.

No one should be allowed a Leaving Certificate from the Grammar School without passing a sound examination in Prescott's " Mexico" and " Peru," with Anson's " Voyage Round the World " (1740-44) and Mungo Park's " Travels " as alternative options. They should be the bedfellows of all Boy Scouts. In our time they could hardly be procured at all ; now each can be had for a shilling. It is curious that Cowper, in " The Castaway," the last lines he ever wrote, based on the story of the sailor washed overboard as the ship rounded Cape Horn, should have been doubly wrong, and no editor point it out : the page of narrative sincere That tells his name, his worth, his age, Is wet with Anson's tear.

The book is not by Anson, and the name and age of the sailor are not given. Grimm's " Fairy Tales," and the stories of Hans Andersen, the Danish writer, had a strong following.

I fear the latter is to-day quite unknown. Our geography was Anderson's, which I have never seen since. Before that we had Reid's. But it should have been Captain Mayne Reid's, whose "Rifle Rangers," "Scalp Hunters," "Boy Hunters," etc., were all known. I noticed Baden Powell the other day avowing himself a pupil of the gallant Captain, than whom there is no better authority on Natural History.

He knows all that is worth knowing about armadillos, llamas, vicunas, condors, jaguars, pumas, alligators, and such-like interesting people. Orang-outangs are not convincing to me out of Ballantyne's "Gorilla Hunters," and I can not be sympathetic to whales except in Kingston's "Peter the Whaler."

There has been a tremendous expenditure of idle talk lately in town at the School Board Election. I think it raises very grave questions, and they may have to be faced in the near future ; and one is, how far School Boards of ordinary people are fit and qualified to organise the teaching of Secondary Education and a School such as the Grammar School? It was painfully evident that not one of the candidates had any ideas to offer. As I have spoken above of books that have in the past influenced the School and the city, may I, in conclusion, be allowed to offer a suggestion about a book that will influence, and greatly affect, the city 'in the future? I believe the depopulation of Aberdeen, as revealed in the deeply distressing Census returns, to be due in measure to the inevitable disgust young people must feel

when they recall the travesty of historical teaching to which they have been exposed in the past. They must associate it with a sort of " scuffle between kites and crows," as Milton called it in his day—idle talk about Jutes, Angles, Saxons, Normans, John signing Magna Charta and chewing sticks, Lambert Simnel, who becomes in all the books for forty years " a scullion in the King's kitchen," and " the sixty shattered barks that rounded the Orkneys" after the Armada.

The uniqueness of the question and of Aberdeen, I venture to submit, consists in this. If, as Sir Walter Scott said, " every Scotsman has a pedigree, and it is a national prerogative," then emphatically every Aberdonian is a born genealogist. From Cults to the point of the Pier everyone assumes he knows his neighbour, and no genuine Aberdonian ever takes up the daily paper without expecting and claiming to know something about somebody in the obituary column.

No Edinburgh or Glasgow man at home or abroad ever expects this, and all he knows with accuracy is confined to a few streets. The Aberdeen accent is indestructible, and can be heard and detected all over the world. No city has done more for the history of Scotland in all its periods of research, and none has its children more widely scattered. I like that daring spirit at school about my time, who said, " With Stuart Clynel on one arm and Alick Keith2 on the other, I could defy Creation." It is Bon-Accord all over, Aberdeen contra mundum. .

Is it not, then, time that the Grammar School of the city should lead the way with a little " History of Aberdeen "?

What a delight it would be to all the widely-scattered members of the Club to see such a book in print ! I believe one beneficial effect of the circulation of the Magazine in large numbers abroad has been to check the tendency of Aberdonians abroad sending their sons elsewhere than to the Grammar School for education. Few cities have a more striking and connected story to tell. It is now settled beyond dispute that Aberdeen, in its varying forms of Abberdeon, Aberdoen, Aberdon, Aberden, Apardion (in the Norse Chronicles), Aberdonia, means the mouth of the Don. The story of Aberdeen could begin with the earliest Celtic settlement there, and proceed to tell of the incorporation of the hamlet at the mouth of the Dee, under the lee of St I Brother of Arthur Clyne, Architect.

Katherine's Hill. The earliest charter of King William the Lion in 117' would show the trade of the city with the Hanseatic towns on the Baltic. It would then trace the Grammar School from its earliest days, and point out, as Cosmo Innes did, how " long before Edinburgh had acquired the precedency of a capital, or even the first place among the four Burghs of Southern Scotland [Berwick, Roxburgh, Edinburgh, Stirling], while Glasgow was yet an insignificant dependent on its Bishop, Aberdeen had taken its place as a great and independent Royal Burgh, and a port of extensive foreign trade." By 1398, when the Council Registers begin, the story onwards is clear. The industries, the history, the great men, the expansion of the city, should all be made clear, with maps and woodcuts. It would do more for local patriotism and enthusiasm than an eternity of Coronations, Royal Statues, Harlaw Cairns, and all such proposals.

I trust the School Board will take up the idea cordially, and invite the Rector of the Grammar School to compile such a little work for the use of the higher classes of schools in town and county. All that is needed is to secure his consent, and then, with the means of guaranteeing a steady sale in their own power, to place the matter in the hands of some first-class educational publisher. I trust the Board will not fall back on the idle talk of an already congested time-table, when cities with almost no local history, like Birmingham, have introduced such books into their public schools. What is the history of Aberdeen from its earliest days, through provosts, travellers, writers, traders, but the history of the Grammar School? The High School of Edinburgh on her roll has Scott, a host in himself, and three Lord Chancellors.

But, apart from them, she has nothing to compare with the WM. KEITH LEASK. list we can show.

Lower School Section.

Notes.

The session is nearing its close, and the summer holi.days are occupying the thoughts of everyone. Only a few short weeks (we are afraid some of our young friends do not think them quite short enough) intervene between us and the closing day of the School. Many of our Lower School readers will leave the Lower School at the opening of next session to enter the First Class of the Classical or Modern School, while their places will be filled by the usual large number of new pupils at the beginning of the School year.

The Lower School is now free from care, as the inspectors, those monsters whom small boys regard with such dread, have come and gone. There is every reason to expect the inspectors will give their usual satisfactory report on the work done throughout the year. The only examinations which are still to come are the ordinary class examinations, which possess no terrors for the great majority of pupils.

As we mentioned in our last issue, the Lower School is at present a little overcrowded. In this part of the School in particular the new buildings will be welcome. When they are completed, several of the classes, at present too large, will probably be divided into two, and a few will be removed from the Preparatory School buildings.

We notice, with regret, the continued absence of one of our most popular teachers, Miss Maydon. Miss Maydon has been in ailing health since the April vacation, but we hope that before these notes appear in print she may again be among us in her usual state of health. The work of her class during her absence has been carried on by Miss Reid.

During the last few weeks there has been rather an alarming outbreak of chicken-pox among the younger pupils.

The illness, which, although not at all of a dangerous nature, is very infectious, has visited the majority of Miss Adam's class. The infectious nature of the epidemic has enforced the absence of several of the older pupils whose young brothers have caught the infection, and the work of the classes has been slightly disorganised. Enforced absence from School at this time of the year, when. cricket is in full swing, is by no means pleasant, and we heartily sympathise with the sufferers. The epidemic, however, will probably

soon die out, as every precaution has been taken to prevent its spread.

It is now a month since the cricket season commenced at the School, but there seem to be signs of enthusiasm flagging. For the first few days so great was the excitement among the younger boys that we are afraid there was very little work done. The first wave of ardour over, however, most of the pupils have been persuaded to do a little work.

The want of sufficient space, of course, proves a great drawback, as the Lower School must make way for the older pupils at 4 o'clock every afternoon. In spite of this, however, the games go merrily on, and all seem to enjoy themselves thoroughly.

In the Gymnastic Assault on 17th March, classes from the Lower School gave displays of dumb-bell and free drill, and many youthful gymnasts also took a prominent part in the evening's display. The exercises and feats of some of them were among the neatest and most noteworthy there.

The Swimming Club has again recruited a large number of members from the Lower School, and the members are eagerly looking forward to the Sports. For the enthusiasm which prevails in this respect the Club are much indebted to the lady teachers, who take a lively interest in the teaching of swimming to the younger boys.

11th February.—The School played 2nd 'Shire under excellent conditions. Score—School (1 goal 1 try), 8 points; 2nd 'Shire, nil.

15th February.—It is not customary to put in an account of a mid-week game, chiefly because they are usually practices ; however, it would not be doing School full justice to leave out their match on this occasion, when they played 1st University.

The 1st 'Varsity team generally give School a game once or twice a season, and matters end up with scores that need not be instanced. This time the 1st 'Varsity were lucky in getting off with a win ! They cannot gain much consolation from saying that the team was not full strength, for they wanted only two forwards and a half, whose places were filled by able sub-

stitutes from their seconds. The ground was in very fine condition, and there was played perhaps the best game we have had this season. Most conspicuous was the play of our forwards. They played the game of their lives, in delightful contrast with their performance of the previous Saturday. Benton and Stewart, among the backs, also played very well. The former was the saving of the School on many occasions.

Stewart often saved a strain being put on the School defence by securing the opposing half before he could get the ball clear.

The opening try was a good one by D. Leith, who failed in the kick. This was followed by another try on the right wing, but for some unaccountable reason it was not granted. It, as matters proved, unjustly deprived School of the honour of a win. Shortly afterwards Spark claimed a mark, and D. Leith put over the kick; thus School led by six points, a lead which they maintained till the second half, when the superior weight of the 'Varsity men began to tell. M'Allan and Gray scored for them, and of these one try was converted, which gave them the lead by two points. Towards the end School tried hard to regain the upper hand, but, unfortunately, did not succeed.

Score-1st 'Varsity, 8 points; School, 6 points.

18th February.—A League match was played on this date between 'Varsity " A" and School on the School ground.

The School team were short by four of their regular forwards.

This had a greater effect than one would think—it played the mischief with the combination of the forwards. A hard game and a very close one was the order of the day. With the School playing up in the first half, the 'Varsity forwards soon showed that they meant business. They were a good deal heavier than ours, and often broke through with dangerous rushes. A free kick was awarded against School within their " twenty-five," and Ireland put over a short kick for the 'Varsity. Matters did not look altogether promising for Sehool at this stage, for the forward rushes by the 'Varsity continued to test their defence, and eventually a try was scored on the right wing. It was partly through a misunderstanding, but its value in points was none the less for that. At this juncture we are happy to record that School woke up ! The game was carried to the 'Varsity's territory, where D. Anderson nearly crossed over their line. More open play followed, resulting in the School's first try, scored on the right wing from a followup. D. Leith converted, and, as there was no more scoring in the first half, 'Varsity led by one point at half-time. On resuming, the School forwards came away with a rush. G. Leith dribbled the ball towards the line, lost it, and then regained it to score the second try. Macleod converted from an easy position. 'Varsity tried hard to regain the lead, but School managed to keep the game open, and, so long as they

did so, they were all right. Still, there was a good deal of exciting play, especially when the 'Varsity forwards broke away with the ball from the scrums. Towards the end of the game School completely mastered the opposition. A cross-kick was secured and resulted in a try between the posts, but Macleod's attempt at goal went wide. This was followed by a fine try

by Stewart, who ran through the 'Varsity pack and touched down on the right wing. This time Macleod brought out the full points. Score—School (3 goals 1 try), 18 points; 'Varsity " A " (1 penalty goal 1 try), 6 points.

The School turned out on Tuesday, 28th February, to play what was to be, according to the fixtures, their last match with Gordon's College. Events proved it to be the second last.

The ground was in good condition and gave promise of a fast game, the only drawback being the high wind. On winning the toss, Macrae elected to play against the wind. Unfortunately, the School forwards were again not up to strength, while Gordon's forwards, on the other hand, were playing well, and it was through their play that the score was kept as low as it• was. A new arrangement was tried in the School team.

Benton came up to half and Spark took his place at back, but he had to go off in the second half owing to a bad leg. The first score was off a cross-kick. It was nearly lost owing to some slipping, but Benton came along just at the right moment and touched down. School were rather inclined to slack after getting this lead, though rushes by the Gordon's forwards tended to keep them awake. Play was very even for a great part of the first half, relieved by some bits of excitement. D. Anderson scored once, but it turned out that the ball had been in touch about mid-field. One of Gordon's backs, Booth, seized the opportunity offered when their forwards were pressing, to try a drop, in which he was successful. Before half-time School got another try. This time the scorer was Mackintosh. In the second half big things were expected of the School, but they did not come off. They certainly had most of the game, though the additional tries fell short in number of the expectations of the supporters. There was rather an amusing incident in connection with the next try. Stewart had a race for the ball over Gordon's line and touched down, but, immediately, an objection was raised that it was the wrong ball ! This seemed quite plausible for the instant, as some youngsters had been kicking a ball near by, and it was produced as being the real one. However, it was not difficult to settle which was the match one. This try was followed by another one from Mackintosh. Stewart picked up the ball when it was being dribbled along loosely and handed over to Macleod, and from him it went to Mackintosh, who crossed over with it. In the second half Gordon's were never long off the defensive. The

result of the game was: School (2 goals 2 tries), 16 points; Gordon's College (1 dropped goal), 4 points.

4th March.—Having played and won all their League matches, and thus being " top dog " for the second time in two years, the School team were pitted against the pick of the second teams, the 2nd City. This game was naturally looked forward to by the School men as being, most likely, the hardest tussle of the year, a game which would either crown their efforts of the season with victory or mar their record with defeat. They were not disappointed in either respect. The game was, indeed, a hard one, which, at one period, looked as if it were to be lost, and it was only by determined play on the part of the whole team that it was, turned into a victory.

School played up in the first half and soon set about pressing.

The play throughout the game was kept open, and the forwards on both sides played well. It was again noticeable that the opposing forwards succeeded in breaking away with the ball from a line-out, but this did not come off so often as it had done in the 2nd 'Shire and 'Varsity " A " matches. These tactics, of course, have always been tried by the School forwards, too. The first try of the game was quite an uneventful one. The ball was dribbled over the 2nd City line and touched down. Macleod failed in the attempt at goal, which was a pity, for, in the event of the 2nd City getting a try, there was every possibilty of their putting on an adverse lead. To the end of the first half the play was evenly shared, the School evidently being under the impression that the day was won. • In the second half, however, they found that they had a hard game to play. Play had not long been recommenced when the City forwards broke away in the manner alluded to above, and one of them scored. Silence on the part of the School's supporters. " Was the kick to go over, or not? " It was not long before that was settled : it did go over. Further silence on the part of the School's supporters. This was the second time a lead had been gained against the School by opponents of the same rank, but it did not dishearten them. There were twenty minutes to go yet, and they were full of excitement, which grew as the time went on. It was evident that the School had a hard nut to crack, for the 2nd City were determined to keep up their lead. Spark distinguished himself in an incident of an unusual kind. He gathered the ball near the touch line and handed off two men, but a third placed himself right in his way. The customary thing would have been to get tackled, but it was not so with Spark—he cleared the opposition with a fair jump. Excitement was running high, when the ball came out from the scrum and was passed to Stewart.

he was not slow in taking advantage. He had only the back to pass, and when it was seen that he had smartly evaded his tackle, there was a great outburst of cheering, in which the School team took a large part. And no wonder! The 2nd City would now have to do a thing or two before they would get in again. School, playing with relieved minds, did all the pressing from now till the end of the game. Score—School (1 goal 1 try), 8 points; 2nd City (1 goal), 5 points.

9th March.—Though all the fixtures had been played off by the School, another match was arranged with Gordon's. In the last match Gordon's had improved upon their previous defeats by a close score, and this had evidently inspired them with the hope of bringing the season to a close with a victory, just as the School cricket team had, the year before, under somewhat similar circumstances, turned the tables on the hitherto victorious Gordon's by an easy win. Rugby is not so fickle as cricket, though form tells, to a great extent, in Rugby. As it was, School were at the top of form on this occasion. They very aptly brought the season to a close by putting up their biggest score. In the first half the play was fairly equal, a noticeable feature being good passing by the School men. W. Anderson opened the scoring for the School by a try far out on the left. D. Leith converted. Soon after another try was added, but the points were not brought out. In the second half the School halfs and threes played a delightful game. D. Leith and his wing, D. Anderson, were conspicuous through their excellent passing and repassing, which was accurate and well timed. As soon as the ball was out of the scrum it was passed smartly along to the left, where D. Anderson scored three times with fine runs. Play throughout this half was very fast. D. Leith was the next scorer. He secured his try from a repass by D. Anderson. Mackintosh's first try was an amusing one. He got possession in front of the posts, and, after feinting, coolly walked over unopposed. Stewart got possession from loose work on the left wing, and, rushing over, added another try. The last try was the result of a passing movement from left to right, terminating with Mackintosh. Of these tries Mackintosh converted three and Macleod one.

Score—School (5 goals 4 tries), 37 points; Gordon's College,

nil.

In conclusion, it is fitting that a few remarks should summarise the past season of Rugby, which has been a very notable one, perhaps the most brilliant in the annals of the School. It will be remembered that of the previous year's team, which was also a very successful one, eleven members were available for this season, and thus great were the hopes of the School's supporters. These hopes were attained. In the team selected

from the Aberdeen Schools to play George Heriot's College, Edinburgh, no fewer than twelve out of the fifteen places were held by the School players, and in the team chosen to represent the 2nd City against our F.P.'s, seven members figured. The team won all its League matches, and thus, for the second time in succession, and for the third time in four years, the title of Junior Champions has fallen to the School.

Cricket Notes.

The cricket season is now in full swing.

The playfields present a busy scene at certain hours with eleven sets all in play at the same time. Bowlers are eager to secure wickets, batters even more eager to vent their superfluous energy on the unfortunate ball, the outcome of all this being that wickets fall merrily, and balls whistle through the air to the accompaniment of melodious voices yelling " Heads! " Of a truth, our field is no place for persons with weak nerves !

than usual. Of the last year's team as many as five have returned, and keen competition will fill the remaining six places.

Most of the candidates are already decisively in the running.

Unfortunately, J. Elmslie will not he able to play till June.

He will be missed chiefly in the bowling line, which is saying a good deal, for he is one of the best bats.

Minutes of Debating Society.

January 13, 1911.—This evening the Society met in Room I. at seven o'clock, with Mr. Robson in the chair. Mr. Murison, the Hon. President, gave a lecture entitled : " Witchcraft. and Witches." There was a poor turn-out, owing, perhaps, to the counter-attractions of sledging and skating. The lecture was most interesting and was full of anecdotes, many of which dealt with Aberdeen and the North. One, indeed, had a direct reference to the School. At the close, Mr. Robson proposed a vote of thanks to Mr. Murison, which was very cordially given.

After the lecture, a short " Hat Night " was held, but no really good debate was proposed. Mr. Boyd presided, and the chief speakers were Messrs. W. Anderson, Thomson, and T. Robson.

The meeting broke up at 8.45 p.m.

January 20, 1911.—This evening had originally been set aside for a debate between Messrs. Carroll and Walker, but it was postponed a week. Instead, the Rev. J. A. Irvine, B.A., gave his lecture : " Some Impressions of Switzerland." As it was illustrated, the Society met in Room V. at seven o'clock.

Mr. Middleton, Hon. Vice-President, was Chairman, and there was a large turn-out. Mr. Irvine gave a splendid lecture, which was appreciated by all. Several of the points on which he informed his audience had not been heard by them before,

and so were of special interest. The vote of thanks which Mr. Middleton called for at the close was very heartily given. Mr. Irvine thanked Mr. Middleton and the rest of his audience and called for a vote of thanks to the Chairman, which was thereupon given. After the lecture a " Hat Night" was held.

Few good debates were proposed. Mr. Robson was Chairman and Mr. Pigge chief speaker.

January 27, 1911.—On this date the Society met in Room I. at seven o'clock, with Mr. Robson in the chair. Owing to changes in the syllabus, two debates were down for discussion.

The first was between Messrs. Spark and McKenzie, and was entitled: " Is the Barbarian happier than the Civilized Man ? " Mr. Spark, who supported the affirmative, spoke first, and delivered a very good paper. His arguments were well arranged and often convincing. After he had spoken, Mr. McKenzie then gave his views in a splendid paper. It was short, but very humorous, and delighted his audience. After he had finished there was some heckling. When the vote was taken Mr. McKenzie won by 22 votes to 12. The second debate, postponed from the previous week, was between Messrs.

Carroll and Walker. The subject was : " Has the Invention of Gunpowder proved a Curse to Humanity? " Mr Walker was unable to be present, and Mr. Grant read his paper. The first speaker was Mr. Carroll, the affirmative champion, who gave a paper which showed signs of much preparation. He dealt with the subject in detail, and was heartily cheered at the close. Mr. Grant, after having read an apology from Mr. Walker for his absence, delivered the paper for the negative.

After he had finished there was some heckling. The first vote was unsatisfactory, but when the second vote was taken Mr. Walker was found to have won by the narrow margin of two votes, the voting being 17 to 15. A " Hat Night " was then held, and some good debates were submitted. The chief was : " Should the British Railways be Nationalised? " which was spiritedly contested. Messrs. Rose, Key, and Boyd were the principal speakers.

February 3, 1911.—As this date was a vacant one, the debate postponed from December 16 was given. It was entitled: " Must Great Britain's Naval Policy be Offensive or Defensive? " and was contested between Messrs. Rose and Macdonald. Mr. Rose, who was in favour of the defensive, spoke first, and gave a very good paper. Mr. Macdonald then gave his paper for the offensive. After the speakers had finished, one or two questions were asked. When the vote was taken it was seen that Mr. Macdonald had won by 16 votes to 12. The remainder of the evening was set aside for " readings " and " impromptu debates," but no debates were proposed. The

chief " readers " were Messrs. Milne, Troup, Patterson, and Thomson.

February 10, 1911.—The Society met this evening in Room IV. at seven o'clock to hear a lecture from Dr. Macleod entitled: " The Gyroscope—with Experiments." Mr. Robson presided over a crowded meeting, and briefly introduced the lecturer. Dr. Macleod illustrated the great stability which a gyroscope has when revolving at a high speed, and from that went on to other experiments. Perhaps the most interesting was that showing the principle of the mono-rail. At the close Mr. Robson proposed a vote of thanks to Dr. Macleod, which was heartily given. Dr. Macleod then thanked his audience and kindly answered any questions about the experiments.

There was no after-meeting.

February 17, 1911.—This evening the Society met in Room I. at seven o'clock, with Mr. Robertson as Chairman. The business of the evening was a lecture by Mr. Alexander Mackie, M.A., entitled : " Johnny Gibb of Gushetneuk." There was a large attendance, but more would have been there if the weather had been better. The Chairman introduced the lecturer in a few well-chosen words, and Mr. Mackie first gave an appreciation of his subject. Of the lecture w•e need only say that it could not have been surpassed. Mr. Mackie is a splendid reader, and for over an hour he kept his audience convulsed with laughter. The lecture was appreciated not only by those who had read the book, but by those who had not. Mr. Robertson made a short speech at the close, and called for three cheers to Mr. Mackie, which were most heartily given. After the lecture, a " Hat Night " was held, over which Mr. Robson presided. The debates were mostly poor and the good ones were not supported. The chief speakers were Messrs. Thomson, Rose, Milne, and Davidson.

February 24, 1911.—On this date the Society met in Room I. at seven o'clock, with Mr. Robson in the chair. " Readings " were the chief business of the evening, and there was a fairly large turn-out. After the readings were concluded, some debates were put forward. None of those proposed, however, was of exceptional merit. The meeting broke up about nine o'clock.

March 3, 1911.—The last meeting of the Society for the season took place on the above date at seven o'clock. Mr. Robson was in the chair. The business of the evening was a " Sing-Song." Many items were contributed, but the meeting did not compare favourable with the Christmas " Sing-Song.

Perhaps the near presence of exams. might explain this inconsistency. We have again to thank Messrs. Newton, Anton, McKenzie, and the others who contributed to the programme, and also Mr. Hyslop (F.P.) for playing the accompaniments.

The meeting broke up about twenty minutes to ten o'clock.

The Executive is highly gratified that the membership has once more been substantially increased, and feels that the total now attained is one to be proud of. The increase is in large measure due to the work that has been done in connection with the scheme for the publication of a Record of Old Boys. During the past year a very considerable amount of information has been collected regarding the whereabouts of former pupils, and as the result of following up this information and getting into touch with the persons discovered, many Old Boys who had never heard of the Club, or at any rate had never thought of joining it, have become members.

There is good reason for believing that the membership has not yet nearly reached its limit, and in the future, as in the past, every endeavour will be made to trace Old Boys who are not members of the Club and induce them to join it.

With regard to the Record, the work of annotation is progressing steadily but there remains still a very great deal to be done. The expenses in connection with compilation have been, and must continue to be, rather heavy. In view of this an appeal for subscriptions was issued to members of the Club early in the present year and the amount subscribed was X52 8s., which, together with the sums given by the Dramatic Section of the Club and the Club itself, brings the total subscriptions received for this purpose to £ 12 I 13s. 9d.

After deducting the expenditure to date there remains a balance of X65 6s. 9 The Magazine.

The Magazine has again maintained its reputation during the past year, and the Executive feels assured that it is

fulfilling its purpose of keeping Old Boys in touch with their School and with one another. Members of the Club resident in Aberdeen would be surprised if they knew the eagerness with which the Magazine is perused by Old Boys abroad and the frequency with which expressions of appreciation are received by the Secretary. The Editors desire to thank all those in different parts of the world who contributed articles or letters during the past year, and they trust that Old Boys, wherever resident, who have something interesting to relate, will not hesitate to publish it in the pages of the Magazine.

The Byron Statue.

The Sub-Committee appointed by the Executive have pleasure in reporting that the Byron Statue Committee have resolved to commission Mr. Pittendrigh MacGillivray, and have appointed a Sub-Committee to complete the agreement with him. The Statue will be completed by the summer of 1913. Mr. William Smith, advocate, has been appointed Vice-Chairman of the General Committee. The Club subscriptions amount at date to £107 Jos. 3d.

4th Battalion Gordon Highlanders (T.F.) Company.

The Old Boys who joined the above Company last year are all pleased with the interesting work in connection with the Territorial Force. It is hoped that a large number of Old Boys and also present pupils in their last year at School will join this year, in order that a separate Company of Old Boys may be at full strength within a short time.

The Badminton Section.

The Executive has learned with pleasure that the Section has had a very successful winter season. The membership of the Section is over 70, and great progress has been made by many of the members. The Section has also been financially successful, and there seems little doubt but that another connecting link amongst Old Boys has been strongly established.

The Orchestral Section.

The arrangement instituted last season, whereby the Section employed the services of a professional conductor and a professional leader, was continued this season with beneficial results. The Orchestra made marked progress during the winter, and took part with credit in the Annual

Club Concert held at the beginning of March. While the Committee in charge of the Section is gratified at the number of present pupils who have joined the Orchestra, it hopes that more former pupils will avail themselves of the opportunity of practice in orchestral work which the weekly meetings of the Section afford.

London Section.

The London Section of the Club has maintained its membership, which is likely to increase further as the result of the Roll of Old Boys Scheme. The Section confined their attention to holding a Dinner, which was most successful. It is well to impress on London members that the Magazine is sent to them post free. New members' names should be sent to Mr. T. J. Wilson, C.A., 37 Suffolk House, Cannon Street, London, E.C. Football Section.

The Football Section has had rather an uneven season.

It opened well at the commencement, but fell away towards the middle, and again improved at the end. It represented Aberdeen in the Final for the North of Scotland Cup, but was, unfortunately, defeated by Panmure, the Dundee representatives.

Proposed Hockey Section.

The Executive learns with pleasure that a proposal is on foot to establish a Hockey Section of the Club, and there seems little reason to doubt that it will be as successful as the many other Sections, now all more or less on an independent basis, but whose existence would have been impossible had it not been for the strength of the general Club. There are many Old Boys who do not play Rugby during the winter, but who would readily play Hockey, and anyone desiring to become a member of the Section should at once send his name to the Honorary Secretary, or to Mr. R. Forgan, 32 Carden Place.

Club Medals.

The Club, as usual, presented medals to the best English and Science scholars in the School, and these were gained by— Archibald F. Hyslop.

Various Social Events.

In regard to these, the Annual Dinner was the most successful that has been held under the auspices of the Club : the Annual Ball, and the Cinderella organized by the Rugby Football Club were quite as successful as in former years.

The Executive feels that the various Sections of the Club are now so well organized and so firmly established that success is assured. A new function in the form of an " At Home " was much appreciated by the older members of the Club and ought to be repeated in future years.

The members of the Dramatic Section are once again to be complimented upon the success of their performances, and the Executive desires to thank them particularly for the handsome donation that has again been given to the Record of Old Boys Scheme. It is hoped that arrangements may be made next season to increase the stage accommodation at the School.

The arrangements made by the Club Evenings Committee for a meeting to be held once a month have been most successful. The Bridge Matches, Tournaments, and the Lectures were in all cases well attended, and have added much to the spirit of comradeship amongst Old Boys. The Executive desires to thank Principal Smith and Mr. J. Parker for their Lectures.

Honour to the President.

The Executive feels that this Report would not be complete without offering to Mr. H. F. Morland Simpson the hearty congratulations of the Club on the honour recently conferred on him by the University of Aberdeen. The esteemed Rector was the founder of the Club, and the Executive feels sure that it expresses the wishes of the members in hoping that he may long enjoy the honour conferred upon him and continue the good work done by him at the old School.

The Financial Statement.

The Treasurer's Accounts, after being duly audited, show that the balance at the beginning of the financial year amounted to £270 7s. 6d., of which sum £227 15s. 6d. was capital, and £21 I7S. 7 I2 d. was at the credit of the Roll of Old Boys Scheme. The revenue for the year from all sources amounted of £379 19s. II IZ d., and the expenditure to £279 8s. 1 od., leaving a balance of £370 18s. 7 12 d., of

This capital represents the total of all Life Members' subscriptions, along with ordinary subscriptions paid in advance, and is invested to the extent of L250 in 4 per cent. Debenture Stock of the First Scottish Northern Investment Trust, Ltd., the balance being in the Savings Bank and in the London and Aberdeen.

Treasurers' hands.

In General.

In conclusion, the Executive desires to point out that much good work is being done by the Club, but that if it possessed the requisite funds much more could be done. In particular, funds are required for the Roll of Old Boys Scheme, and the Executive also feels that it would be highly desirable to be in a position to give assistance to deserving boys about to leave School. For any of these purposes, or for any specific purpose apart from these, the Executive will be glad to receive intimation of donations or legacies from those members who desire to remember the old School or assist the Old Boys' Club.

The foregoing Report was submitted and unanimously adopted at the Annual Business Meeting of the Club held in the Palace Hotel on the evening of Tuesday, 25th April.
