A Message to Former Pupils.

•

Term is almost over and the days which remain, filled with abnormal activities for some of us, are a period of eager anticipation and delight for the rest.

The Summer Term is probably the one which you recall with the keenest pleasure. The big external examinations are out of the way. Masters tend to clemency in the exaction of home work and sport is not a matter of a weekly afternoon.

Besides, are there not such things as Geography excursions for the privileged ones of the Middle School and—more recently —visits to Church organs, consuming two full periods ?

May, this year, was even more inclement than usual.

Flannels called for courage, and Rugby would have been more seasonable than Cricket. Yet there were redeeming spells, and memories of last year are too recent to leave us with any other feeling than thankfulness. On our return after Easter we had the heartening announcement of another gift. Dr. Rowell the doyen among members of your Club—filled the role of deus ex machind to perfection. But for his timely generosity the organ for the Hall might have gone the way of some other cherished schemes. Now it is raised from the category of the remotely possible to that of the definitely certain, and the exiguous voices of shy Grammarian songsters will receive the encouragement and support which they so obviously need.

On Empire Day we had an address from Professor Ferguson which removed many of our misconceptions about the Empire in general and Canada in particular. The learned Professor adapted himself very happily to the mixed ages and intelli-

gences of his audience, and was received with the customary enthusiasm. The cricket match with the Masters ended in the usual humiliation for those in authority, but the afternoon was one of the best, and we hope we took our licking with good grace.

As I write, the issue of the Golf match is still on the knees of the gods, though the presence of a budding Golf Champion —Riddell—on the Boys' side makes the proposition, from the Masters' point of view, a stiffer one than usual.

The Empire touch was further emphasized this year by a visit from three members of the Australian Scottish Delegation. What probably interested the boys most was a short message of greeting from a pupil of the Scotch College in Melbourne, the Head Master of which, Mr. W. S. Littlejohn, is a Former Pupil of the Grammar School.

Judged by box-office receipts the Swimming Gala goes from strength to strength. Vendors of ice cream on the Beach enthusiastically endorse this view. Swimming is fast gaining in popularity among the subsidiary sports, and it is right that this should be so. Keith House's victory in the final event was no runaway affair, nor could any of the competing teams grumble at the lack of adequate vocal support.

Sports Day has come and gone. A big field of entries, as usual-56 for the 80 yards (7 years old) !—and a crowd in front of the Pavilion well up to previous standards ; but, what a day ! Fortunately we were able to carry through the programme and there were sunny intervals to make amends, but our proverbial luck was out for the first time for a decade.

Times were good considering the state of the track.

We are now definitely assured that the Boarding House will be ready for occupation when School resumes in September. I do not wish to reiterate what is said elsewhere in the Magazine on this subject, or to emphasize the benefits which will accrue to the School in a variety of ways from the scheme. It is incumbent on you to support the House in whatever way you can and make the Directors feel that they have something more behind them than your blessing. Parents resident abroad have now the opportunity, so long denied them, of sending their sons to the old School without the anxieties which must inevitably attach to life in lodgings.

School took a marked interest in the signal distinctions which have recently befallen some of our F.P.s. First came the news of Professor J. J. R. Macleod's appointment to the Chair of Physiology in Aberdeen, then—maiora canamus— the selection of Lord Meston for the dignified office of Chancellor of our University and, almost immediately thereafter, the elevation of Mr. Mon-ice Mackay to the Scottish Bench.

Truly a sequence of honours of which any school might legitimately feel proud.

It remains to oiler the customary greetings to all of you, whether at home or abroad. I question if there has ever been closer contact between past and present than during the session which is now closing, and I hope this corporate feeling will wax even stronger as time goes on. D. M. The School Boarding House. .

The scheme for the establishment of a Boarding House in connection with the School has now taken practical shape.

A Company, with the somewhat long though significant title of " Aberdeen Grammar School F.P. Club Boarding House Company, Limited," has been formed and duly incorporated, and the prospectus has been issued. Full details of the scheme are given in the prospectus. Here it is sufficient to state that the Company has been formed at the instigation and under the auspices of the Executive of the F.P. Club, with a Board of seven Directors. The Rector is, ex officio, one of the Directors. The Club has three nominees on the Board, and the other three Directors are appointed by the shareholders.

The Secretary and Law Agent of the Company is Mr. James C. Duffus, M.C., M.A., LL.B., Advocate, 7 Golden Square, Aberdeen.

The property, No. 8 Queen's Road, Aberdeen, has been bought by the Company, and the adjoining house, No. 84 Queen's Road, will be acquired by the Company as soon as it is vacant (i.e. " in the near future," as the prospectus states).

These properties, which will be easily and cheaply adapted for the purposes of the Boarding House, are situated about midway between the School and the Playing Field. They are substantially built, and in thoroughly good order and repair throughout. It is intended to " open for business " at the beginning of the School year next September. Meantime active steps are being taken to equip and furnish the premises and to appoint the staff. For the important post of House Master the Directors consider that they have been fortunate in securing the services of Mr. James S. M. Eddison, one of the Masters of the School, and to the responsible position of Matron they have appointed Miss Christina M. R. Mayor, who, by training and experience, is admirably qualified for the post. Applications by parents for the admission of their sons to the Boarding House should be addressed to the Rector. It should be noted that throughout the Company have had the cordial approval and support of the Aberdeen Education Authority.

Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen.

Appointment of Lord Meston.

On Saturday, 21st April, the Right Honourable Lord Meston of Agra and Dunottar, K.C.S.I., LL.D., was unanimously appointed by the General Council of the University of Aberdeen to be Chancellor of the University in succession to the late Duke of Richmond and Gordon. The appointment was moved by Mr. George Duncan, advocate, Chairman of the Aberdeen Education Authority, who sketched his Lordship's career. He said that he was sure the election would be hailed with satisfaction by the whole University. Lord Meston was essentially one of themselves. An Aberdonian born and bred, born indeed in the shadow of the old Tower of King's College, a distinguished alumnus of the University, a member of a class which, with some reason, had been generally regarded as one of the ablest that had ever passed through King's College, James Meston entered the Indian Civil Service in 1885. His progress in that Service was as rapid as it was notable. In 1899 he became Financial Secretary to the Government of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, and so successful was he in that capacity that in 1904, after the Boer War, he was asked by the Governments of Cape Colony and the Transvaal to advise them as to the re-organization of their civil services.

On his return to India in 1906 he became Secretary of the Indian Finance Department. In 1912, while still well under 50 years of age, he became Governor of the United Provinces, and was made a K.C.S.I. They could not forget his services during the War, when he represented India in the Imperial War Cabinet in 1917. In the same year he was a member of the Imperial War Conference. Finally, on his retirement from the Indian Civil Service in 1919, he was raised to the Peerage, being, Mr. Duncan thought, the first alumnus of the University of Aberdeen to be created a Peer of the Realm since Sir George Gordon of Haddo was created the first Earl of Aberdeen so far back as 1682. Since then Lord Meston had given eminent public service in various capacities. With a record such as that, the University of Aberdeen might well be proud of her distinguished son, and they would do themselves honour by appointing him.

In seconding the motion, Mr. Theodore Watt said that it seemed to him that Lord Meston's title of Agra and Dunottar summarized and symbolized his qualifications for the office of Chancellor. The name Agra, of course, commemorated his service in the great Indian Dependency for a period extending over more than a third of a century. He was not to traverse the ground already covered by Mr. Duncan, but it might be recalled that in the course of the late War, Lord

Meston, in addition to being one of the three official advisers of the representative of India in the Imperial War Cabinet, was a member of the Imperial War Conference, when for the first time the direct representatives of India sat in an Imperial Conference with the representatives of Great Britain and of the Dominions. At that time he received several signal honours.

For a week-end he was the guest of the King at Windsor Castle.

On 1st May, 1917, he was one of five overseas members of the Imperial War Conference who were presented with the Freedom of the City of London at the Guildhall, when he was described as " a brilliant example of that devoted band of Civil Servants who spend their lives in every clime for the advancement and benefit of the country in which they are serving and of the Empire." Lord Meston was the ablest supporter, if not the real deviser of the Government of India Bill, which embodied a policy which he had long advocated and towards which many other civil servants in India had gradually moved.

The second name in Lord Meston's title—Dunottar-(Mr. Watt continued) reminded them of his inherited connection with the north-east of Scotland. Lord Meston was a kinsman of the " ingenious and learned William Meston, A.M., sometime Professor of Philosophy in the Marischal College of Aberdeen," who was tutor to a former Chancellor of Marischal College, the 10th Earl Marischal, and of his brother, Field-Marshal Keith. William Meston was appointed Professor in Marischal College in 1714, and in the following year was made Governor of Dunottar—the historic seat of the Keiths. That was an interesting link between the present nominee for the Chancellorship and a distinguished Chancellor of one of the two Colleges which now form the University of Aberdeen. Lord Meston had through all the period since he left Aberdeen 45 years ago remained an Aberdonian at heart, and certainly had not forgotten what he owed to the education he had received in his native city. In a letter which he wrote to Mr. Watt at the time of his appointment to the Governorship of the United Provinces he said: " I shall always do what may lie in my power to exalt the horn of the old School " —the historic Grammar School of Aberdeen, which he left in 1880 as Dux and Gold Medallist-" I owed it much, and retain the kindliest memories of it." Lord Meston had shown on various occasions that he cherished the same feelings towards the University of Aberdeen. Throughout the years that had elapsed since he left King's College, Lord Meston had remained a scholar. Those of them who pinned their faith to " the fine, old, fortifying classical curriculum " would learn with pleasure and satisfaction that certainly in his earlier days in India, and quite possibly up to the present time, he

keptlhis Horace by him, and made a point of reading at least one ode every morning at breakfast-time.

In conclusion, Mr. Watt said that if they elected Lord Meston they would have secured for the University the services of one who was gifted with insight and broad-mindedness ; one whose argument was as clear as his utterance ; one who in finance had displayed conspicuous ability ; one who had an attractive and forceful personality; one who physically would adorn the high position. The graduates of the University could not do better in regard to the highest honour which it was in their power to bestow than to confer it on one who had served his country with such distinction, and whose career had shed such lustre on his Alma Mater.

After Lord Meston had been declared elected, Sir George Adam Smith, as Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University, said that he was very glad to pay his homage to the new Chancellor. He did not think that in the history of the Scottish Universities a Chancellor had ever been appointed to a University of which he bad previously been a student since the days of the last Earl Marischal, who was Chancellor of Marischal College between 1712 and 1715. Speaking on behalf of his fellow-officers in the University, he said they looked forward to working with the new Chancellor for many years to come.

Lord Meston is to be installed on Tuesday, 3rd July.

A Distinguished Physiologist.

Professor J. J. R. Macleod's Appointment.

JOHN JAMES RICKARD MACLEOD* (1884-93), M.B., D.Sc., LL.D., F.R.S., was in April appointed by the King, on the recommendation of the Secretary of State for Scotland, to be Professor of Physiology in the University of Aberdeen, in the place of Professor MacWilliam, resigned. He is at present Professor of Physiology in the University of Toronto, and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Medicine in that University.

Professor Macleod, who is a son of the late Rev. Robert Macleod, at one time minister of John Knox United Free Church, Aberdeen, is 51 years of age, and received the whole of his schooling from the age of seven at the Grammar School.

He graduated in medicine with honours at Aberdeen University in 1898, being at the same time awarded the Anderson Travelling Scholarship. Thereafter he spent a year of study in the Physiological Institute of Leipzig University. His first appointment was that of Demonstrator in Physiology at the London Hospital Medical School from 1899 to 1902, when he became Lecturer in Biochemistry. In the same year he was awarded the Diploma of Public Health at Cambridge.

In 1903 he became Professor of Physiology in the Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A., a post which he continued to occupy until 1918, when he was appointed Professor of Physiology in the University of Toronto. During part of the winter of 1916 he acted as Professor of Physiology in McGill University, Montreal, and was engaged during his later years at Cleveland with various important War duties.

Professor Macleod's eminence as a physiologist was re cognized by his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1919, and of the Royal Society of London in 1923.

He received the honorary degree of D.Sc. from the University of Toronto in 1923, and that of LL.D. from the University of Aberdeen in 1925.

Early in his career Professor Macleod took up the study of the metabolism of the carbohydrates, numerous papers on which led to his important treatise on the Physiological Pathology of Diabetes in 1913. In 1918 he published one of his most notable works, " Physiology and Biochemistry in Modern Medicine," which is now in its fifth edition. He is author of about a dozen books and monographs on physiological subjects, and has published a total of over 130 scientific papers.

Professor Macleod's name will always be associated with the discovery of Insulin. A full and accurate account of his work in this connection appeared in the Magazine of November, 1923. The following is from a well-informed biographical notice in the Aberdeen Press and Journal :—" It was in 1921 that a young Western scientist, Dr. Banting, a worker in the same field as Professor Macleod, brought to him his difficulties and his hopes. The result was ardent co-operation in constructive research ; all available resources of the University were utilized, and extraordinary progress was made. Early in 1922 the possibility of obtaining a long-sought therapeutic agent for the treatment of diabetes was established beyond doubt. Insulin was found and its efficacy proved. But Professor Macleod did not rest with mere scientific discovery.

The treatment had to be made readily available for suffering humanity. How that was done is another instance of the unique combination of medical genius with organizing and executive power. He called to his aid his colleagues, his staff, the law, his University, and the Medical Research Council of Great Britain, and thus safeguarded the production and quality of Insulin. These wonderful achievements were possible only by the genius which Professor Macleod had for organizing team work, which he not only directed and inspired, but in whose toil he shared assiduously. The results constituted a brilliant example of the value of competently directed co-operative work in the solution of scientific problems.

Professor Macleod was awarded, conjointly with his colleague, Dr. Banting, the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1923."

Appointment of Mr. A. Morrice Mackay.

In October, 1922, the Right Honourable ROBERT MuNizo (1884-85), P.C., M.A., LL.D., who had been Secretary for Scotland since 1916, was appointed Lord Justice-Clerk of Scotland, with the title of Lord Alness, and now another Former Pupil has been raised to the Scottish Bench.

ALEXANDER MORRICE MACKAY (1882-91), M.A. (Aberd. and Cantab.), LL.B., K.C., was in May appointed to be one of the Senators of His Majesty's College of Justice in Scotland, in place of the Hon. Lord Ashmore, resigned. A son of the late Mr. Robert Whyte Mackay, of the well-known firm of Messrs.

Anderson & Thomson, Aberdeen, the new Judge entered the Initiatory Department of the Grammar School in 1882 at the age of six, and passed right through the School, leaving it as Gold Medallist in 1891. At Aberdeen University he had a brilliant career, graduating M.A. in 1895 with double firstclass honours, in Classics and Philosophy, winning the Hutton Prize, the Dr. Black Latin Prize, the Bain Medal, and the Town Council Gold Medal to the best graduate of the year. Later he was awarded the Ferguson Scholarship in Philosophy, open to graduates of the four Scottish Universities. Proceeding to Trinity College, Cambridge, he had a no less brilliant career there, and was placed in First Class Division I of the Moral Science Tripos, Part I, 1897, and First Class Part II, 1898. He next went to Edinburgh, where he won the Vans Dunlop Scholarship and graduated LL.B. in 1902 with special distinction. In the same year he was called to the Scots Bar. In 1920 he became a K.C., and last year he was appointed Senior Advocate Depute.

On Empire Day the Rector made special mention in the School Hall of the appointment of Mr. Mackay to be a Scottish Judge, and declared that he was the best all-round pupil the School had ever had. His career at School, University, and in the practice of his profession had been one of sustained brilliance, but what would be of special interest to the present pupils was the fact that he had conjoined with this intellectual eminence a very marked efficiency in sports and athletics.

While a pupil at the School Mr. Mackay played in both the Rugby and the Cricket teams, and while a student at the University he played Rugby for the F.P.s, and Cricket for the University and the 'Shire, being Captain of the former XI. At Cambridge he concentrated on Tennis, becoming President of the Cambridge Tennis Team, and playing against Oxford on several occasions. In his first year at Cambridge he played under the famous brothers Doherty. After coming to Edinburgh he was for three consecutive years Tennis Champion

of Scotland. He became well known as an Alpine climber, and in this connection it may be mentioned that he is joint author of a booklet on " Roof Climbing in Cambridge." He has also distinguished himself as a golfer and a curler, and is no mean player on the violin.

On 30th May Mr. Mackay went through the picturesque ceremony of " Passing his Trials " before taking his seat as a Judge of the Court of Session, with the judicial title of Lord Mackay. He presented his Commission to the Lord President (Lord Clyde), who had all the other judges of the Court of Session, except Lord Constable, gathered beside him on the Bench in the crowded courtroom of the First Division. Mr. Mackay, who appeared as a Lord Probationer, was in Court attire.

His Commission, superscribed by the King and bearing the Privy Seal, is signed in the bold hand of Sir John Gilmour, the Secretary of State for Scotland, and is addressed to the " Right Trusty and Well-Beloved Counsellor, James Avon Clyde, Lord Justice President," and to " Right Trusty and Well-Beloved Counsellor Robert Munro, Lord Justice-Clerk," and the rest of the Senators of the College of Justice. It opens with the cordial, " Right Trusty and Well-Beloved Counsellors . . . we greet you well ! " and continues thus : Understanding that there is the place of one of the Senators of our College of Justice in Scotland vacant by the resignation of our trusty and well-beloved John Wilson, Esq., commonly called the Honourable Lord Ashmore, and it being requested that a person of loyalty, learning, and knowledge, and experience in laws should be preferred thereto . . . and we being well-informed of the loyalty, literature, and good qualifications of our trusty and well-beloved Alexander Morrice Mackay, one of our Counsel, learned in the law, and his abilities and willingness to serve in the place, Therefore, we think good to nominate and present him unto you. . . .

The Senators were then required to try and admit him, the Commission closing with: "And we bid you hearty farewell. Given at our Court of St. James, the 28th day of May, 1928."

After the Commission had been read with all due loyalty and respect, as ordered by the Lord President, Mr. Mackay heard two actions in the Outer House and another in the First Division, and reported his opinions on these to their Lordships.

Thus he " passed his trials," that survival of former times, which aimed at the prevention of Royal favourites whose learning was unworthy of the honour being elevated to the high post of Judge.

All the judges again assembled in the First Division Courtroom, the Lord President announced that the Lord Probationer had successfully passed his trials, and administered the oaths of service and fidelity, whereupon Mr. Mackay was invited by the Lord President to take his seat upon the bench.

Eric Patrick Adam* (1915-20) has recently become a Life Member of the F.P. Club. He is with the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, in Shanghai.

Hugh Grant Adam (1907-08), M.A., who is Associate Editor of the Melbourne Herald, is the author of a book entitled " An Australian Looks at America," recently published

by Messrs. Allen & Unwin. He accompanied a delegation of four representatives of Capital and four of Labour sent by the Commonwealth Government to study American industrial conditions on the spot. He interrogated the representatives of civic bodies, business organizations, and great industrial corporations in various parts of the United States. He also " sounded " workers in different occupations, and the results of his investigations are set forth in the book.

George James Allan* (1907-20), M.A., M.B., is at present House Surgeon at Weymouth and District Hospital, Weymouth, Dorset.

James Allan (1880- 81), M.A., who has been Classical Master in George Watson's College, Edinburgh, since 1888, is retiring at the end of the present session. He is the President of the Watsonian Club for the current year, and presided with great acceptance at the last annual dinner of the Club.

The Spring number of The Watsonian contains an account of the dinner, and also a reprint from The Glasgow Herald of an article entitled " The Doctor," dealing with a former head of George Watson's College—Dr. GEORGE OGILVIE, who was a pupil at the Aberdeen Grammar School in 1843-44, and one of four F.P. brothers who all became LL.D. of Aberdeen.

Robert Allan* (1919-23) has recently received an appointment with the British India Steam Navigation Co., Ltd. He served his apprenticeship as an engineer with Messrs. Clyne, Mitchell & Co., Ltd., Aberdeen.

pointed by the Minister of Pensions to be his personal representative on the Aberdeen, Banff and Kincardine War Pensions Committee. He has served on this Committee for the past six years, and was a member of the Scottish Advisory Committee on War Pensions, which was set up by the Ministry in 1922 and has recently completed its duties.

Albert John Angus* (1919-20) has obtained an appointment with the Bank of Montreal at its head office in Hamilton and sailed for Canada in the beginning of May. He was trained in the North of Scotland Bank.

Robert Smith Asher (1898-1903) was in May appointed Tramways and Motors Manager to the City of York Corporation. From 1911 to 1913 he was Permanent Way Engineer to the Aberdeen Corporation Tramways. During the War he served as a Captain in the Royal Engineers, and after demobilization was appointed a Technical Inspector of the Ministry of Pensions. Since 1922 he has been Permanent Way Engineer and Assistant to the Edinburgh Tramways Manager, and was entirely, responsible for the conversion of the Edinburgh cable system to electric traction. There were 93 applicants for the York managership, and the appointment was made unanimously.

George Stephenson Brown* (1910-13), A.M.Inst.C.E., who is in the Port Development Department at Hongkong, has recently become a Life Member of the F.P. Club.

George Gordon Cameron* (1915-17), M.A., and Alexander Spring Archibald (1915-22), M.A., are attending Tubingen University for the summer session. Later in - the year Cameron is going to New York for a year's study and research.

Alexander Whincup Carle* (1914-20) has received the degree of B.Sc. in Engineering at Glasgow University.

John Taylor Copland* (1912-13) holds an engineering post under the Government of Ontario, and is at present stationed at Port Colborne.

John Francis Croll* (1910-22), having completed his apprenticeship at the Strath Engineering Works, Aberdeen, has been appointed engineer in the motor vessel Peisander of the Blue Funnel Line.

Ronald Grant Dingwall* (1912-21) is Resident Medical Officer at the Stockton and Thornaby Hospital, Stockton-onTees.

Harry Fraser Duncan* (1911-17) is now engaged with his brother, Alexander Robertson Duncan* (1912-19), on the latter's coffee estate at Hatwara, P.O. Thika, Kenya Colony. He says that if any F.P. is contemplating going out

to that part of British East Africa, he will be delighted to let him have particulars regarding the country.

Robert Duthie* (1914-19) has been assumed as a partner in the firm of Robert Duthie & Sons, wholesale grocers, Aberdeen.

John Murray Easton* (1895-1905), F.R.I.B.A., at a meeting of the Royal Institute of British Architects in London at the beginnning of April gave an address on " Health and Recreation Centres," in which he dealt with the post-War development of health and recreation centres on the Continent, more particularly in the industrial regions of the Rhine. In the German industrial town of to-day, he said, the manufacturer gloried in his factories and called in distinguished architects to design them, not in the rather sentimental manner of our cocoa millionaires, but to express the beauty, efficiency, and even ruthlessness of the machine. He endeavoured to provide his workers with surroundings and means to increase their efficiency and vitality, and it was impossible to travel in Germany without being impressed by this sense of energy and hopefulness, and without feeling ashamed at the contrast which was offered by so many of Britain's industrial towns.

Of all the places he had visited, Frankfurt was pre-eminent in the completeness with which she had provided for the health and recreation of her citizens.

Alfred John Meldrum Edwards* (1908-21), M.A., who is at present studying at St. Catharine's College, Cambridge, has been chosen to represent Cambridge University against Oxford at the Annual Inter-University Swimming Match at the Bath Club on 2nd July, and has been awarded a Blue.

Alan C. Emslie* (1912-18) is now in practice as a chartered accountant in Fraserburgh. He qualified last year.

Francis Millar Eason* (1918-25) is an apprentice cadet with the British India Steam Navigation Co., Ltd. Matthew George Fisher (1896-1900), M.A., LL.B., who is Secretary to the Scottish Ecclesiastical Commissioners, has been appointed Junior Counsel to the Secretary of State for Scotland.

Basil Lewin Greeson* (1898-1902) , Rector of Binbrook, Lincoln, for the past 14 years, has accepted an offer of the living of Crosby, Scurthorpe. Crosby is an important charge with numerous organizations, and has a fine new church.

Douglas Ross Harper* (1917-26) is a member of the Eastern Staff of Messrs. Harrison and Crosfield, Ltd., East India merchants, in their London Office.

Louis Reginald Harper* (1910-17) received in February an engineering appointment with the British Broadcasting Corporation in London. For the past nine years he has been on the staff of the Marconi Company, and has travelled extensively in many parts of the world.

Francis Arthur Robert Humphrey* (1915-20) sailed in February for Calcutta to take up an appointment as leadsman apprentice in the Covenanted Bengal Hoogly Pilot Service.

Gordon Wallace Hunter* (1907-16) in July of last year obtained the Master's Certificate, Mercantile Marine, and is now an officer in the Blue Funnel Line—Alfred Holt and Co., Liverpool.

Herbert Cecil Hutcheson* (1921-26) has been appointed organist and choirmaster of Holburn United Free Church, Aberdeen. He was previously organist of Craigiebuckler Parish Church, Aberdeen.

Herbert Saunders Insch* (1916-22), C.A., who served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Flockhart and Grant, C.A., Aberdeen, has recently received an appointment with Messrs.

Cooper Brothers and Company, chartered accountants, of London and Liverpool.

William Wilson Jameson* (1892-1902), M.A., M.D., M.R.C.P., London, was in March appointed by the Senate of London University to the University Chair of Public Health, tenable at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the appointment to date from 1st January, 1929. He has latterly been Medical Officer of Health and School Medical Officer for the Borough of Hornsey, London.

Francis Charles Kelly* (1905-14), B.Sc., Ph.D., recently resigned from the Colonial Civil Service (Kenya Colony) on account of ill-health, and has been appointed Research Chemist and Technical Adviser to the Chilean Iodine Committee, London, with work in Aberdeen, Cambridge, and London,

but stationed in Cambridge. When giving evidence not long ago in one of the most important cases in Kenya of recent years (known as the " Kijabe Case "), he says he saw three other F.P.s in court, all having something to do with the business in hand. These were : DAVID EDWARDS* (1903-09), M.A., LL.B., Registrar, H.M. Supreme Court, who was administering the oath ; STEPHEN HENRY CARNELLEY (1889-94), Senior Magistrate, who was listening to the proceedings (though not in his official capacity) ; and ROBERT BROWN DUNCAN (1882-84), who was acting as a juryman. The lastnamed is a grocer in a large way in Nairobi.

Dudley Walter Kirk* (1914-19), M.B., is in general medical practice in Deal. He resides at Admiralty House, which is so called because in the olden days it used to be the residence of the Admiral to the Port of Deal, when Deal was an important and flourishing port. The house dates back to the old smuggling days and has an interesting history. At one time Nelson, when he was Admiral to the Port of Deal, lived in it.

James Hunter Laing* (1925-27) is in the office of the Vacuum Oil Company of New York at Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

John Laird (1901-03), M.A., Professor of Moral Philosophy in the University of Aberdeen, had an article on " The Ethics of Communism " in the April number of the Journal of Philosophical Studies.

John Lendrum (1879-84), South United Free Church, Elgin, retired in March from the Moray Education Authority, of which body he had been Chairman from March, 1921, when he succeeded JOHN FLEETWOOD CUMMING (1879-80). When the first Authority was elected in 1919 Mr. Lendrum, who had been a member of three Elgin School Boards, was appointed Vice-Chairman, an office which he held till he was made Chairman two years later. The services of Mr. Lendrum as Chairman have been very highly appreciated.

Eric R. R. Linklater* (1913-16), M.A., has been appointed by the Committee of Award for the Commonwealth Fund of New York to a Fellowship in Literature at Cornell University for the two years beginning in September, 1928. He is at present assistant to the Professor of English Literature in Aberdeen University.

Matthew Brodie Linton* (1912-24), who two years ago published " The Tragic Race," a drama dealing with the Bronte family, has been asked by the Brontë Society for the original MS. of the play, which is to be placed permanently among other exhibits in the Bronte Library.

recently become a Life Member of the F.P. Club. He was ordained and inducted to the United Free Church, Rogart, Sutherland, in June of last year, the president on that occasion being Rev. NORMAN MACKENZIE* (1888-90), M.A., of the U.F. Church. Helmsdale, Charles Gordon Mackenzie* (1887-92), M.A., B.D., has returned from Kandy, Ceylon, where he was minister of the Presbyterian Church, and has been appointed to the West Parish Church, Crieff.

William Andrew Mackenzie (1887), who was editor of Black and White from 1897 to 1900, and was well known in London journalistic circles, has been Treasurer-General of the Save the Children International Union (Union international de secours aux enfants), Geneva, since 1920. In 1919 he was editor with Burns and Oates, publishers for the Roman Church. In 1922 he was dignified with the order Knight of St. Gregory, and in 1925 was President of the Union Catholique d'Etudes Internationales. It was in 1911 that his wellknown " Rowton House Rhymes " appeared, and since then there has been added to his published works a long list of novels and serials.

Alexander Douglas Mackie* (1924-26) sailed in October of last year for Australia to take up an appointment at Drouin, Victoria. He reports that on arrival he was given a most hearty welcome by the Scouts, and that he is very happy in his new work.

Ewen Maclean* (1902-03), M.A., is now Chief Presbyterian Chaplain in the Aldershot command. He is a Second Class Chaplain, ranking as Lieut.-Colonel.

Edwin Salisbury MacLeod* (1881-89) has been promoted to be Senior Nautical Surveyor to the Board of Trade, London. He was previously Senior Surveyor at Middlesbrough.

Ernest Main (1903-08), M.A., was appointed London Editor of the northern edition of The Daily Express when this was started in the spring of 1927. In March of this year he was promoted to be Late Night Editor of the Daily Express, London. Prior to 1927 he had a spell of special correspondence abroad, notably in Alsace and Lorraine for an American group of newspapers. His "foreign correspondence" started in 1923, when he was sent to the Ruhr, and also on a special investigation to Poland. He has also, done " resident correspondence" temporarily in Paris, Beilin, and Brussels. He is an authority on the Reparations problem and the Dawes Plan, and in addition has developed a 'close knowledge of British local government problems.

who, as mentioned in the March Magazine, sailed near the end of last year for the Antarctic, arrived at Grytviken, South Georgia, about the end of January, after a ten weeks' voyage.

He reports that terrific weather was encountered between Rio and Deception Island, South Shetlands. This island, " within sight of the cold blue shores of the Antarctic Continent," is supposed to be the crater of an old volcano. If a hole is scraped in the sand, one gets water so hot that it cannot be touched. On 3rd March they had just completed the planktonic survey of South Georgia, and Marr had slept for 24 hours on end, after a fortnight's intensive work at sea, much impeded by icebergs and dense fog, when he was summoned to go ashore to meet His Excellency the Governor of the Falkland Islands, who was on a tour of the dependencies, and who unveiled the new memorial erected to Sir Ernest Shackleton at Grytviken. Marr occupied a place of honour at the unveiling ceremony by reason of his intimate association with the great explorer on his last voyage. As the cabin boy of the Quest he was one of the party who erected the rough cairn over Shackleton's grave in January, 1922. Marr reports that they have a very fine laboratory at Grytviken, and that the house adjoining is very comfortable and well appointed.

There is even a piano in it, for which the late Scout is very thankful. He is the only one who can play on the instrument, and he uses it often. It will probably be two years before he returns to this country.

In The Journal of Botany, October, 1927, there appeared a list of the plants collected by Marr during the British Arctic Expedition of 1925, together with a few explanatory notes and points of interest.

William Alister Lovie Marr* (1919-23), a brother of the foregoing, sailed in May for India to take up an appointment in Travancore with Malayalam Plantations Ltd., with whom his brother, Donald Middleton Marr* (1919-26), received a similar appointment in 1926. For the last five years he has been at Trinity College, Glenalmond, where he received his Rugby cap, won the prize for throwing the cricket ball, was middle-weight champion boxer of the College, a Sergeant in the O.T.C., and a prefect. Another brother, Neil George Marr* (1915-21), M.B., is at present assistant in a medical practice in Sheffield. Yet another brother, Thomas ogs ton Marr* (1917-20), is an officer in the s.s. Clan Ronald.

William Miller* (1894—?) has for several years been Resident Engineer, under the Colonial Office, superintending the construction of Takoradi Harbour, Gold Coast. On the 3rd of April the bow of H.M.S. Daffodil broke the boom between the two great breakwaters that thrust their granite noses for a mile or more into the Gulf of Guinea from the shores of the Gold Coast. This marked the completion of a great engineering feat, the harbour of Takoradi being the only complete shelter for ships of over 30 feet draught on the 1,300 miles of surf-bound coast between Sierra Leone and Nigeria. Takoradi has been described as the crowning feat of a notable development of communications which trebled in seven years the trade and revenue of a small Crown Colony.

The whole cost of constructing the harbour, about £3,300,000, has been borne by the Gold Coast Government. The main and lee breakwaters, 1 i mile and i mile long respectively, enclose 270 acres, in which some twelve ships can lie in the roughest weather in calm water up to 40 feet deep. Three alongside wharves for ships of 400 feet length and 30 feet draught have been provided, and can be increased to six when required. The whole harbour is well supplied with railways and modern equipment capable of handling 5,000 tons of cargo a day. On high ground overlooking the harbour a modern tropical township for 150,000 people has been laid out on Government-owned ground.

Alexander James Morrison (1903-O5), M.A., who has been minister of the First U.F. Church, Thurso, since 1920, was in May unanimously elected to Woodside U.F. Church, Aberdeen. His elder brother, JOHN MORRIS0N (1902-03), was minister of the U.F. Church, Alvie, Kincraig, and was killed in France in September, 1918, when serving as a combatant officer with the Cameron Highlanders.

William Agnew Duncan Neilson* (1917-24) is at present studying for the agricultural degree of London University.

William Nicol (1917-18), C.A., has received an appointment with Messrs. Deloitte, Plender, Griffiths & Co., London.

John Scott Ogg* (1919-20) has recently entered the service of Messrs. Lidgerwood, Ltd., export merchants and engineers, London, the head of which is GEORGE WATSON* (1873-77). Ogg is at present working under JoHN Ross EssoN* (1893-97), who has been with Lidgerwoods for a number of years.

Lawrence Ogilvie* (1907-16), M.A., M.Sc., has now returned to this country from Bermuda, and taken up the

appointment in Bristol University which was recorded in the last issue of the Magazine. In the Agricultural Bulletin of January published by the Bermuda Department of Agriculture, it is stated that the work done by Ogilvie in the control of plant diseases and pests has been of incalculable value to the Colony, and a brief account is given of what has been accomplished by him during the past two years.

James Ogilvy Rae* (1912-21), who for the last three years has been in the head office of the North British and Mercantile Insurance Co., Ltd., London, has received an appointment as an assistant in the China Branch of this Company at Shanghai, and left for the East in May. John Fletcher Richardson* (1917-23) has received an appointment with Messrs. Swan, Hunter and Wigham Richardson, the shipbuilders, and is in their designing office at Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He has been playing regularly for Percy Park, the well-known Rugby team of County Durham.

Alexander Lawrence Robb* (1897-99), M.B., Major, R.A.M.C., has been stationed for the last two and a half years in Peking, in charge of the Military Hospital of the British Legation Guard. Writing at the beginning of May he said : " As is usual in the Spring, the Chinese Civil War has again blossomed forth, and just at present the centre of gravity appears to be nearing Peking." Since then, of course, Peking has changed hands. Major Robb does not know of any other F.P. in Peking, but he had a visit last year from Major DOUGLAS GORDON CHEYNE* (1901-05).

M.D., R.A.M.C., who was touring with his chief from Shanghai, Peking, he says, is a delightful place, and is perfectly safe for foreigners, although many have been giving it a wide berth during the past two years. Mails come very quickly and regularly via Siberia, taking usually about .17 days. Major Robb has just become a Life Member of the F.P. Club.

James Alastair Russell* (1907-15), architect and surveyor, is now Master of Works for Skye and Outer Islands, under the Inverness County Education Authority.

Alexander R. Saunders (1871-77), of the China Inland Mission, Yangchow, is the author of a recently-published booklet entitled " Blind and Blessed," in which he gives an account of how he suddenly became totally blind in 1916 as the deferred result of his terrible experiences during the Boxer Rising in 1900. The aid of one of the most eminent eye specialists in the United States was sought, but after five examinations, he declared there was no hope of recovering

the eyesight. In the autumn of 1918 Mr. Saunders returned to China to continue his work for the China Inland Mission, although, as he says, after 40 years of strenuous work retirement might now be justifiable.

Alfred Charles Scott* (1882-89) has recently been promoted from the position of overseer in the District Manager's Office of the Telephones, Aberdeen, to that of a higher clerical overseer in the District Manager's Office, Edinburgh.

William Philip Selbie* (1901-06), M.A., who is in the Army Educational Corps, is now on the staff of the Army School of Education, Shorncliffe.

William Evan Fraser Simpson* (1916-26), who is now studying engineering at the Technical College, Glasgow, has just won the Governors' Scholarship, which is given to the most distinguished first-year student in engineering, and carries with it a remission of fees for three years. A previous F.P. who gained this honour was STANLEY HURRY* (1916-21).

Edward David Alexander Smart* (1907-19) is at present Resident Inspector in Elgin for the North British and Mercantile Insurance Co., Ltd. John Lindsay Smith (1889-90), Colonel, Indian Army, Deputy Director of Supplies and Transport, Northern Command, India, was gazetted C.B.E. (Military Division) on the King's birthday. He entered the Indian Army in 1895, and during the latter period of the Great War was Inspector of Animal Transport, Field Army, North-West Frontier, India.

Archibald Douglas Spark* (1905-10), Captain, Gordon Highlanders, after completion of a tour of duty as Adjutant of the 5/7th Battalion Gordon Highlanders, T.A., has rejoined the 2nd Battalion at Bordon, Hants.

Ian Hay Storrie* (1921-26), and William Charles Storrie* (1921-26) have continued to distinguish themselves in the athletics of Crypt Grammar School, Gloucester, the former winning the 100 yards, 440 yards, 880 yards, hurdles, and long jump; and the latter securing firsts in the obstacle race and the high jump. Both boys broke the school records in their respective jumps. Ian competed in the 100 yards at the Public School Championship held at Stamford Bridge, London, and managed to reach the final (out of 81 entrants from all over the country), but unfortunately lost the start and the race. He has now left school and taken up architecture.

He completed Part I of the Tripos two years ago, being then placed in Class I. He graduated at Aberdeen with first-class honours in Classics in 1925, and was the winner of the Liddel Prize in Latin Verse Composition, the Jenkyns Prize in Classical Philosophy, the Simpson Greek Prize, the Robbie Gold Medal, and the Sealleld Gold Medal in Latin. OBITUARY. Sir David Ferrier.

Sir David Ferrier* (1854-58), M.A., M.D., LL.D., D.Sc., F.R.S., died in London on 19th March, in his 86th year. By his death the School has lost one of the most distinguished of its Former Pupils. " The name of David Ferrier," said The Times, " will live long in the annals of medicine as a pioneer in neurology, and coupled with it will be that of Hughlings Jackson, his teacher and friend. Where all was vague and much was speculative in regard to the functions of the brain, Ferrier, by experiment, gained accurate knowledge. Fritsch and Hitzig had shown in 1870 that certain motor centres could be localized in the brain by the use of a minimal galvanic current, but it was left to the genius and industry of Ferrier, using the Faradic current, to map out the motor areas and to localize certain perceptive centres.

Upon the solid foundation thus obtained, he, with many fellow-workers, raised the modern science of neurology, and thereby enlarged the boundaries both of medicine and surgery."

Born on 13th January, 1843, the son of David Ferrier, merchant, Woodside, Aberdeen, he was educated at the Grammar School and the Gymnasium, and entered the University of Aberdeen in 1859 as a student in arts, having gained the first place in the Bursary Competition. He graduated M.A. in 1863 with double first-class honours, in classics and mental philosophy, and in the same year was awarded the Ferguson Scholarship in these subjects. At this time he came under the influence of Professor Bain, and, being specially interested in philosophy, he spent some time at Heidelberg in 1864 in the study of psychology. Returning to Scotland in 1865, he entered the University of Edinburgh as a medical student, and took his M.B. degree in 1868 with first-class honours After a short time as assistant to the Professor of the Practice of Physic in the University, he went to Bury St. Edmunds as assistant to a general practitioner, and there he continued his researches on the comparative anatomy and histology of the brain, embodying the results in his M.D. thesis, which gained the Gold Medal in 1870. In that year he came to London and was appointed Lecturer on Physiology at the Middlesex Hospital. He resigned this post in the following year, when he became Demonstrator of Physiology at King's College, and in 1872 he was appointed to the Chair of Forensic Medicine, a position he held until 1889, when he was nominated Professor of Neuro-Pathology, a Chair which was founded especially for his acceptance. In London Professor Ferrier continued to devote special attention to the physiology of the brain. His experiments were carried out on dogs and

monkeys in the physiological laboratory at King's College, and the necessity for using these animals brought him into great disfavour with members of the anti-vivisection societies, a disfavour which culminated in violent personal abuse and many wholly unfounded statements. The results of his experiments appeared in a series of epoch-making papers published during the years 1873-76, which placed him easily first among the scientific physicians of his own generation, and gave an impetus to the study of the nervous system throughout the world. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1876, and was awarded the Royal Medal of the Society in 1890. Aberdeen University made him LL.D. in 1881, and Edinburgh followed in 1898. He was knighted in 1911, and was made Hon. D.Sc. of Cambridge in 1914, and LL.D. of Birmingham only last year.

At the Neurological Society Professor Ferrier occupied the chief positions, being editor of Brain, the official organ of the society, a member of the Council on several occasions, a Vice-President, and finally President in 1894. At the Medical Society of London he was President in 1913. His chief work, entitled " Functions of the Brain," was published in 1876.

The second edition, which appeared in 1886, was greatly enlarged, and was almost rewritten.

Sir David Ferrier took a keen interest in the F.P. Club of his old School, being for many years one of the Honorary Vice-Presidents. He was present at the celebration of the School's 650th Anniversary on 25th September, 1906, and spoke along with the Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Strathcona, Sir James Stirling, and Sir William Sinclair Bisset at the memorable gathering in the School Hall. He presided at the Annual Dinner of the London Section of the Club in February, 1912, when he delivered a most interesting speech recalling his School days.

Alexander Coutts Bonner* (1882-84) died at Aberdeen on 24th May, aged 59 years. After leaving the School he became an apprentice with Messrs. Davidson & Sim, wholesale druggists, Aberdeen, and four years later started travelling for Mr. William Davidson, who had bought over the business.

On the death of Mr. William Davidson in 1896 Mr. Bonner acquired the business, which was converted into a limited company in 1908, when he was appointed managing director. His only son, DOUGLAS GORDON BONNER (1905-16), who was a Lance-Corporal in the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders, was killed in action in France in September, 1918.

Robert Burnett (1883), M.A. (Aberd.), B.D. (Edin.), minister of Liberton, Midlothian, died on 22nd May, aged 64 years. He was licensed by the Presbytery of Edinburgh in 1890, and ordained to Liberton in 1898.

David Johnstone Campbell (1915-25) died in Aberdeen on 1st June. He was the eldest son of Mr. David J. Campbell, draper and sub-postmaster, Aberdeen. His death was due to injuries he received while riding a motor cycle which collided with a motor van.

George Cruden* (1864-66), M.A., V.D., died in London on 29th March, in his 78th year. He was the only son of the late Rev. James Cruden (1816-21), M.A., minister of Tyrie, Aberdeenshire, later of Gamrie, and was born at Tyrie in 1850.

After graduating in arts at Aberdeen University at the age of 23, he qualified as a law agent, and was elected a member of the Society of Advocates in Aberdeen in 1875. From 1876 to 1896 he was junior partner of the firm of Simpson & Cruden, advocates, and from the latter year till his retirement in 1913 was a partner successively in the firms of Stone, Cruden and Coy., and Stork, Cruden and Simpson. For 37 years he was a member of the Volunteer Force. He joined the 1st Volunteer Battalion Gordon Highlanders in 1867, and in 1900 he succeeded to the command of the Battalion, which he held until 1904, when he retired. His record as an officer was brilliant. Throughout the period of his service he gave special attention to musketry, and was himself an outstanding marksman. He was one of the first of the Gordon Highlander Volunteers to offer his services for the front in South Africa in 1899, but the age limit prevented his offer being accepted.

He was a life-long believer in the value of physical training, and was the founder of the Physical Training College in Crown Street, Aberdeen (now out of existence), and was Lecturer on Physical Training in the University. For many years he was Captain of the Aberdeenshire Football Club, and played in the North and South Trial International Matches. He was also a member of the Aberdeen Rowing Club. When he retired from business he went to live in London, but on the outbreak of the War, although then 64 years of age, he endeavoured to secure an Army appointment through the War Office. Failing in this, he enlisted as a Private in the Army Veterinary Corps in August, 1915, and after three months was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. In December, 1916, he was gazetted a Lieutenant in the Durham Light Infantry, and served with that regiment at home till July, 1917, and in France and Belgium with the G.H.Q. Labour Corps till April, 1918. In the early months of 1919 he was Commandant of the Prisoners of War Camp at Guilsborough, Northamptonshire, and thereafter he was in the Army Cost Accountancy Depart-

ment at Heaton Park, Manchester, and at Ripon. He was demobilized in September, 1919, with the rank of Captain.

On his return to London his life-long passion for physical training reasserted itself, and for the past few years he had been conducting exercise classes for men and women over forty years of age, organized by the late Sir James Cantlie. He was the author of the " Manual of Physical Culture and System of Musical Drill," a book which reached its thirteenth edition.

Colonel Cruden was directly descended on one side from Archbishop Sharp, and on the other side from John Knox.

Hi3 only SO/1 IS Major JAMES WILSON FRASER CRUDEN* (1891-1900), formerly of the Black Watch. Colonel Cruden was a very enthusiastic member of the Grammar School F.P. Club, and a regular attender at the meetings of the London Section.

William Francis Grant Dawson* (1863-67), V. D. , died at his residence, Hillview, Insch, Aberdeenshire, on 5th June, aged 76 years. He was born at the Mains of Williamston, Insch, where his father was a farmer, and entered the service of the North of Scotland Bank in 1869. After being aiccountant at Elgin, he was appointed, when Only 26 years of age, to be agent of the Bank at Insch, and for 47 years he held that position. For 42 years he served as a Volunteer and a Territorial, retiring in 1912 with the rank of Lieut-.Colonel.

One of his sons IS WILLIAM MAURICE GRANT DAWSON* (1905-07), of the Indian Public Works Department.

James Ferguson (1889-92), M.A., of Mid Harlaw, Inverurie, died at Aberdeen on 26th May, aged 53 years. His death was due to severe injuries received in a motor cycle accident at Inverurie. After leaving the School, he graduated in arts at Aberdeen University in 1896. For about six years he was English Master at the Inverurie School, and then taught at Fordoun and Stonehaven, and also in England. Thereafter he went to America and later to Australia, for the sake of his health. He joined the. Australian Imperial Force as a Private in 1916, and was severely wounded in France. Since the close of the War he had lived with a brother at the farm of Mid Harlaw.

Andrew Forrest (1878-79) died at Aberdeen on 18th May, aged 64 years. He was the youngest son of the late Mr. Thomas Forrest, Clerkhill, Peterhead, and after leaving School was for four years in the service of the North of Scotland Bank, Peterhead. He then joined the staff of the National Bank of India, Limited, and after being three years in London was sent to the East. His duties as assistant accountant, accountant, and ultimately as manager took him to Calcutta, Madras, Rangoon, Mandalay, and Lahore. He retired about

1904, and thereafter resided in Aberdeen, where he became an expert in bowling.

Donald Gordon (1877-79), farmer, Bovaglie, Crathie, died in Aberdeen on 28th May, aged 68 years. He was a well-known upland farmer, specializing in the breeding and feeding of the best class of sheep. The Gordon family has been resident at Bovaglie for generations. Mr. Gordon is survived by his mother, who resides at Bovaglie.

Alexander Gregor* (1883), M.D., died in France on 8th April, aged 62 years. He was a son of Rev. Dr. Walter Gregor, formerly minister of Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire, and Secretary of the Scottish Text Society. He graduated M.B., C.M. at Aberdeen in 1893, and M.D. in 1906. He was in medical practice at Penryn, Cornwall, for some years, and then removed to Falmouth, where he was appointed Medical Officer of Health and School Medical Officer. During the War, with the rank of Captain, R.A.M.C., he was Specialist Sanitary Officer for West Cornwall and the Scilly Isles, acting as officer in charge of the Bacteriological and CerebroSpinal Fever Laboratory and Centre from August 1916 to March 1919. While engaged in this work he was severely gassed in the Laboratory and never recovered from the effects.

Eventually he had to relinquish his duties, and later he went to reside in France. He was married to a daughter of the late Mr. John Beaumont, who was at one time English Master in the Grammar School.

Andrew Laing* (1871-74) died at Inverurie on 8th April, aged 68 years. A son of the late Mr. James Laing, plumber, he served his apprenticeship with the North of Scotland Bank, Inverurie, and then was accountant of the same Bank at Methlick and Montrose. In 1884 he entered the service of the Union Bank of Australia, Limited, going out to the Melbourne office. He became a branch inspector, and later manager of the Dunedin branch, New Zealand. He retired eight years ago, and for the last two years had been resident at Inverurie. His brother, ALEXANDER ADAMSON LAING* (1877-79), is Governor of the Royal Bank of Australia, Melbourne.

George Stevenson , Middleton* (1863-68), M.A., M.D., LL.D., died in Glasgow on 21st March, aged 75 years. He graduated in arts at Aberdeen in 1873 and in medicine at Glasgow in 1876, receiving the degree of M.D. from the latter University in 1884. He started in medical practice in Glasgow in 1879, and continued there till the time of his death. For many years he held the position of Physician at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He was President of the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Ireland in 1912-13, and

received the Honorary Degree of LL.D. from Glasgow University in 1915. At the outbreak of the War he was called upon to act as Chief Physician in charge of the medical wards at the 4th Scottish General Hospital, Glasgow. He held the rank of Lieut.-Colonel in the R.A.M.C. (T.F.).

Alexander Simpson (1874-75), C.B.E., M.A., M.D., died at Brighton on 27th March, aged 66 years. He was for a considerable time Medical Superintendent of the County Asylum, Winwick, Lancashire. During the War he served in the R.A.M.C. with the rank of Lieut.-Colonel, and was Administrator of the Lord Derby War Hospital, Warrington, from May, 1915, to October, 1920. He was awarded the C.B.E. in June, 1919. Latterly he lived in retirement at Brighton.

Francis William Squair (1888-90), M.B., died suddenly on 13th June while responding to the toast of his health at a Masonic dinner at Seaham Harbour, Durham. Born in 1872, a son of the late Rev. Charles G. Squair, U.P. Church, New Deer, he graduated in medicine at Aberdeen in 1902, and took up practice at Seaham. At the commencement of the War in 1914 he was a Captain in the R.A.M.C. (T.F.) attached to the 3rd Highland (Howitzer) Brigade, R.F.A. He served with various R.F.A. units of the 51st Division until September, 1917, when he returned to civilian practice. He was recalled in July, 1918, and served in France and Germany until he was demobilized in February, 1920, his rank being then that of Major. In May of the same year he was appointed D.A.D.M.S., 51st (Highland) Division (T.F.).

For the past six years he had been attached to the Royal Air Force at Uxbridge. He had just retired from this appointment and was on his way to his home at Cults, Aberdeen, breaking his journey at Seaham to visit friends.

George Walker (1869-71) died in Aberdeen on 10th April, aged 71 years. A son of the late Mr. Alexander Walker, farmer, Nether Anguston, Peterculter, he served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Hall, Russell & Co., shipbuilders, Aberdeen, and then was with the P. & O. Company from 1879 to 1884.

In the following year he became Engineer Surveyor for the Vulcan Boiler and General Insurance Co., Ltd., and retired _. in 1922.

Alexander Watt (1863-65), formerly minister of the parish of Harthill and Benhar, Lanarkshire, died at Polmont, Stirlingshire, on 21st March, aged 82 years. He was minister of Harthill from 1877 to 1919.

William Willox* (1873-74), M.A., M.Inst.C.E., died at Chorley Wood, Hertfordshire, on 7th April, aged 70 years.

he served as an apprentice engineer in Glasgow, and was later employed on the construction of railways in Brazil and in the Philippine Islands. On returning home, he was engaged on Parliamentary work for the extension of the Aberdeen Waterworks, improvements at Bristol and Avonmouth Docks, and was for a time an assistant engineer on the Great Eastern Railway. Under the late Sir J. Firbank, as contractor's engineer, he was engaged on numerous important works, and then became Resident Engineer for the Stoat's Nest to Earlswood new lines of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway, and later was Northern District Engineer for the same Company. He was appointed Chief Engineer to the Metropolitan Railway in 1906, in which capacity he was responsible for most of the engineering improvements and developments carried out by that Company since the initial electrification. He retired in 1921, but his services in a consultative capacity were retained by the Metropolitan Railway Company. He was President of the Permanent Way Institution for 1908, and was a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He was an active member of the London Section of the F.P. Club, to the members of which he gave an address some years ago on his experiences in South America, which he re-visited after his retirement.

Political Service in West Africa: In a letter written on 25th April from Elmina, Gold Coast, PERCY C. B. SHIRREFFS (1913-16) says:— " The Magazine reached me this morning, and instead of spending my two hours after court sleeping, as I usually do, I settled down to enjoy it. " I am in the political service here, and strange to say, I believe I am about the only F.P. in it in the whole of West Africa. This is a state of affairs which ought to be remedied, because in my opinion the life is an ideal one. " In case you know of any F.P. who is interested, I'll give you a brief outline of the qualifications necessary and the type of work we do. " Appointments are made by the Colonial Office. Applicants ought to be about 24, with good school and 'Varsity education. Games qualifications are practically essential, and a ' Blue ' goes a long way. They want people who aren't afraid of responsibility and who can make quick decisions. " On appointment a man is sent at the Government's expense to either Oxfordlor.Cambridge for a year's course, in Law chiefly. He is then sent out here as a Cadet in the Political Administration. At this stage he learns one of the native languages, and sits in court with a senior man. He moves

round the country listening to palavers with native chiefs, and is always with a senior man, who shows him the ropes. He is a cadet for about a year (during which he is drawing over £500), and the next step is Assistant District Commissioner, when he goes on his own and is in charge of a district.

He hears all the court cases, and treks round his district, settling disputes between chiefs. Probably he is in charge of police, and may be called on to quell any riots—these, however, seldom occur here, and when they do, they are not usually serious. He is responsible for law and order, and the roads, and the prison, and is expected to assist the officials in the Public Works—Forestry, Agriculture, Medical, and other Departments—as much as he can. The natives come to him constantly for advice and he is the ' King in his own district,' as the late Governor, Sir Gordon Guggisberg, said. That expression, by the way, does not find favour with non-political people, but it is pretty well true. " Leave conditions are excellent, and if a man never becomes more than a D.C., he goes up to the £1,200 mark (with allowances). He has really no fixed hours, and provided he does his work, he is left alone. " Now, why have F.P.s overlooked this job ? I have met one or two in other departments, but the Political Service offers much better prospects and more variety than any other.

The Cadet is on the same ladder as the Governor, and all have to start as Cadets. " I am now an Assistant D.C., and next month I take over a busy centre called Swedru, where I am D.C., Deputy Sherriff (I can't spell that word—it's too like my own name), and Police Magistrate all rolled into one. " I hope to be home on leave about September, but if there is anybody who is interested and who wants to know more about it, I'll be only too pleased to tell him all I can.

The Governor is a Scotsman, and my Provincial Commissioner is an Aberdonian—a Skene of Rubislaw, but he went to one of the big English schools and then to Oxford. " For many years they would take only people of the Eton, Harrow, and Rugby type, and out of seventy odd who did the 'Varsity course with me, I was the only non-public-school man, but now that the exception has been made, I hope to see a Grammarian or two in every selection. " I hope that what I have written will give an idea of the type of man they want."

Piffle from the Pen of a Past Pupil.*

By A. HILL GRIFFITH, M.D. Three years ago my old friend Archibald Willet and I planned a two months' holiday in Canada and the States.

We are indeed very old friends, and have kept in touch with each other ever since those far-off days when we were together at the Grammar School in 1869-74. He was looking forward to seeing his brother Arthur [1885-87], an engineer engaged on the Canadian National Railway ; and I to seeing my two nephews at Edmonton—one of whom, William Fraser Griffith, is an F.Y. [about 1905]—and their sister, who manages a business of her own in Vancouver Island, having been out there for many years.

In the days of my boyhood there came periodically to Aberdeen an entertainment called Hamilton's Diorama.

The parents and guardians of all of us gave their hearty approval to this Show ; it was, unlike the Theatre, void of all offence, and, besides, was very cheap. It was supposed to give all the advantage of foreign travel without the inconvenience and expense thereof, and combined instruction with amusement. The conductor, a clerical-looking gentleman with a white tie, an American accent, and a long pointer, took us from the Landing Stage at Liverpool across the Atlantic to New York, where he showed us a picture of a very crowded thoroughfare. I always knew what he was going to say, and, sure enough, he announced with triumph the magic words-" Broadway, Noo York." He referred to America as the land in which everything was made of wood, from wooden pavements to wooden nutmegs. . He would call our attention to a donkey on the roadway, and the animal at once semaphored its ears and wagged its tail, which I thought the finest piece of realism I had ever seen. With such simple pleasures we were quite satisfied, and I marvel when I see the magnificent and luxurious Cinematograph Palace, which may be regarded as the successor of the simple Diorama. In my little effort to-night I feel myself somewhat in the position of the conductor of the old-time Picture Show, but there will be no pictures shown, and I can promise you that I shall make no attempt to instruct you.

Willet and I did and saw only what every tourist to Canada does and sees, and, though this was very enjoyable, it would not be of interest to you, many of whom have been out there and know more of the country than I do.

won't, describe of this wonderful country. I shall adopt a plan of the old Diorama : when it was thought that the exhibition was becoming monotonous and hanging fire, they would introduce a vocalist, a story-teller, or a "comic." For example : Scene—" The Firth of Forth " : in would come a fisher wife with creel on her back and sing " Caller Herrin'."

An old, disgruntled Scotsman used to express in song his want of sympathy with the younger generation. Strange to say I recollect the refrain of that song, although I have forgotten many more important things, and will sing it to you— " It's a Lang time ago since ever I was jolly, and Ilka thing combines ye ken to mak' me melancholy, it's No the Waarld, believe me, it's the Fowk that mak' me sick, sae Help me Bob, I'm weary wi' the Hale rick-ma-tick."

There is a Lancashire saying to the effect that " there's nowt so strange as fowk," and illustrations of this, with a few stories and desultory jottings, will form the material of my little paper.

On 1st August we got on board our vessel at Liverpool, a fine Donaldson Liner of 13,500 tons, which had come from Greenock. The entire crew and staff and most of the passengers were Scots, and we soon found ourselves very much at home. We were played on board to the strains of a bagpipe band supplied by members of the crew and staff ; they also played for the reels at night. The prize for the most original dress at the fancy dress ball was awarded to a young lady who appeared as a kilted highlander. It appeared she had made friends with the chief piper and borrowed his entire outfit, including, of course, the kilt he was wearing. She certainly looked very nice, but to my mind her scheme showed boldness rather than originality.

A fine old Scot who was returning to Manitoba put me up to a few wrinkles for the forthcoming tug-of-war against the third class passengers. He said the rope must be 1 i inches in diameter, the competitors must keep low, with the rope close under the armpits, and, most important of all, the arms must be level with the rope and not bent but kept at their full stretch, letting the weight of the body and the muscles of the back do the work. After this exposition I was not inclined to doubt his statement that he used to go about as a competitor at Highland Games with Donald Dinnie, Jamie Fleming, and McCombie Smith, heroes of my boyhood. Well, the tugof-war came off, and the " horny-handed" were victors— we lost easily !

We had a fine passage, and if we had not been held up by fog at the mouth of the St. Lawrence, would have arrived at

Quebec a whole day before the scheduled time. Willet and I got off at Quebec, where we stayed a day or two at the Château Frontenac, going on to Montreal and Ottawa.

It was blazing hot weather at Montreal, so I put on the outfit I had devised for such weather—a light, cream-coloured, silk jacket ; a vest of the same material—none of your hopelessly vulgarized cummerbund for me ; white flannel trousers, white socks, white canvas shoes, white Panama hat ; and, I must not forget to mention, a very large umbrella, white outside and lined with green inside, like a puddock-stool.

I shall have something more to say about this article later on.

When I contemplated myself in the tall mirror I thought I presented rather a striking figure. I must, however, have had some misgivings, for I turned to my friend and said, " Archie, do I look a Howling Swell or a Shocking Bounder ? " He promptly replied, " Certainly not." This at first reassured me, but later on I saw that this Delphic answer was capable of two interpretations.

A large employer of labour who was thoroughly fed up with his Irish workmen and everything Irish, told me how he would settle the Irish question. He would put the Dutch into Southern Ireland, and they by their industry and initiative would make a Paradise of that land. The Irish he would put into Holland—they would be sure to neglect the dykes, and the sea would rush in and drown the lot.

We met a great many Americans who came for sport and to escape the Prohibition Laws of their own country. They do themselves too well, both as to food and drink, with deplorable results to their figures. They go about without coats and look as if they had a football under their belts. I have since seen in an American paper a grave warning as to this danger of over-nutrition in men.

Some parts of Ontario are " dry," and at the hotel my friend, who had been a bit out of sorts, confided to me that he could do with a - good stiff whisky-and-soda. The waiter overheard him and whispered he could get him one. Willet, like all our countrymen, has a great respect for the Law, and declined the tempting offer. I think there are occasions when breaking the Law is only a technical offence. A hunting man I knew was " had up " before the Chester magistrates for riding his horse on the footpath. He explained that the road was exceedingly slippery and that as he more than once had nearly come down, he had gone on the footpath to escape this danger. As he said, it was right in the country, there were no pedestrians about, and he didn't think he was doing any harm. Said the magistrate, " No, I don't think you were, but you were breaking the Law." My friend replied he'd rather break the Law than break his neck. The Bench,

however, imposed a fine " just to encourage beginners," as the old song has it.

Willet met his brother Arthur at Montreal. He had come 600 miles from his centre, Capreol. The brothers were delighted to meet. I had not seen Arthur for 25 years.

One day I was writing some letters and left my fountain pen on the desk for a very short time, but it was gone when I got back and I never saw it again. The explanation given by the little pageboy seemed likely to be correct : " A lot of Bums come in here, and one of them has pinched it." This word " Bum " is applied only to the meanest of creatures, a sneak thief, or one who has lost all sense of decent conduct.

It must not be applied to anyone with the least claim to respectability. In contrast, the word " Guy" is almost a term of endearment. You will hear someone say, " Who is that Guy over there? " meaning no offence to the person indicated.

I used to be amused at an advertisement in the Aberdeen papers, " Wanted an Orra Man." Fancy the feelings of a poor fellow who had been an unsuccessful candidate for such a humble job ! He would no doubt be disappointed, but might derive some consolation from the idea that his failure was due to looking too respectable and not sufficiently " orra."

At the top of Mount Royal I had my first and last drink of Kola, a much-advertised and favourite beverage. It is by no means an innocuous drink. The bar-tender told us that it made his hands very shaky and upset his nerves dreadfully.

It was put on the Prohibited List, but there was such a howl of indignation that it was speedily struck out.

Willet and I parted company at North Bay, he to join his brother at Capreol, and I going on to Winnipeg and Edmonton.

From American novels and plays I was under the impression that they always said " Yep " and " Nope " for our Yes " and " No." I never heard anyone say Yep," but invariably " Yeh" or " Yah," pronounced very short. I don't know what they say for " No," although I tried hard to find out. On the journey west from Winnipeg I got into conversation with a smart American who managed a business in Canada. He never used the word—he was a very polite man. I asked some ridiculous questions which I thought must receive a direct negative, but it was no good. He would say " Well, I wouldn't go so far as that," or some such phrase.

He was either too polite to contradict me, or suspected what I was after and was determined not to enlighten me.

At Edmonton I found my nephew Willie and his wife, with his elder brother's wife and two daughters, awaiting my train, and a very joyous meeting we had. The elder brother

Lambert had been invalided out of the Canadian Naval Reserve, baying been injured in the Halifax Harbour explosion.

This meeting with my relatives at Edmonton and with my niece at Vancouver was the chief object of my tour, but must be of little interest to you, so I shall be very brief. Willie, in view of my visit, had dated his holiday from our first meeting, which enabled him to show me everything of interest and to indulge largely in golf and billiards. He had joined up with the First Canadian Contingent and had been through a lot of fighting at Passchendaele and elsewhere. He got his commission on the field. The last time we had met was at St. Andrews in 1915, I think—after he had received his one and only wound, and that not a serious one. In the evenings we had a jolly time with " sing-songs," the whole company being musical or at least musically inclined. Please note the distinction: I come under the latter category.

After a stay of nearly a week at Edmonton, I went South to Calgary and thence by the C.P.R. to Vancouver, where I found my niece awaiting my arrival. She, of course, knew and admired this most beautiful part of the country, and we visited many lovely places here and on the Island during the week we were together. The motor drive of some 60 miles from Nanaimo in the Island to Victoria I can never forget.

Everywhere I went there was jazz music, which was getting on my nerves ; but at Vancouver Hotel I encountered it in its most blatant and virulent form. The saxaphone player could make his instrument grunt like a pig, bark like a dog, and scream like a peacock—in fact, do anything but make music. At one hotel, perhaps as it was Sunday, I did hear for the first and only time some good, straight music, both vocal and instrumental.

When my niece left, I went to Seattle in the States, for Yellowstone Park, Chicago, and New York, where Willet and I were to meet and sail for Southampton on the Berengaria. At Victoria I was refused permission to go on board the vessel for Seattle on the ground that I had come through New York. I denied this, but the man at the barrier said I must have done so. " Well," I replied, " I never noticed New York, which I understand is quite a large town." Sarcasm was of no avail, and I had to go and see the head man in his office in Victoria. The matter was soon settled, but I nearly missed the boat. I fancy the man who stopped me may have read the string of tickets backwards instead of forwards. It would be unreasonable to expect such a man to have the brains of you or me or he would be doing our jobs.

I had a most enjoyable four and a half days' tour through Yellowstone Park, staying each night at one of the Mountain Hotels. These Parks both in Canada and the States are

under Government control, and are dedicated for all time to the people for their enjoyment. They are really large tracts of land, with rivers, mountains, and wild beasts, all in a natural state. An American boy, boasting to his English friend of their size, said that a boy who started to walk across one was a married man with a large family before he got to the other side.

The first day all our vehicles came to a stop to allow the passengers to feed a big, black bear which was sitting up on its haunches catching the good things thrown to it. In my ignorance I thought there must be a circus in the vicinity.

One is warned not to leave any sweet things in one's motor car, for these beasts will claw the entire cushions to pieces in their search for anything to eat. Children accustomed to fondle their Teddy Bears are apt to look on these wild animals simply as superior animated toys. I heard a sickening story of a child who had its forearm bitten off when handing some sweets to one of these brutes.

The first place we stopped at was in the midst of spouting geysers of boiling water, or water and mud, all smoking away, and the ground so hot that you had to keep some distance away. I heard some one say, " Hell can't be far off."

I watched the dancing each night at the hotels, and was particularly impressed with the grace and elegance of a handsome young cowboy. I thought what a delightful change it must be after months of hard work on the ranch roping and throwing the steers. The American to whom I confided this thought burst out laughing and told me it was a young woman who came every year from Michigan, " and that's her mother over there in a similar costume, smoking a cigar."

At one hotel there was a conspicuous notice which read :— " Gentlemen are requested to wear their coats in the Dining Room." There was no mention of trousers, so I suppose these were optional.

I was now off on my two and a half days' journey by rail to Chicago. I calculated that when I got to New York I should have spent ten days and nights on the trains. We had to stay six hours at Salt Lake City for the train from Los Angeles to join us. When the coloured attendant handed me the umbrella he said with a broad grin, " I say, Sah, dat's quite an umbrella you've got." This famous city is the most beautiful I have seen in the western hemisphere, and I had a good look at it. Brigham Young lies buried in the centre, in a very modest tomb with a single tree at the head, the whole railed off from the busy street. The Mormons are a very industrious and prosperous people, constituting some 75 per cent. of the city's population. They have a strong controlling hand on all the banks and railways. One is shown the moun-

tain where Brigham Young surveyed the great valley of sage and sand and said in effect, " This is the place for us."

To one who doesn't know, sage and sand look pretty hopeless, but Young knew better, and by bringing water from the hills, converted the desert into a smiling garden fit to grow anything.

Polygamy was for the purpose of rapid increase of a people surrounded by enemies and fighting for their existence.

Since the amalgamation with the United States this practice has died out.

The air here is so clear that one under-estimates distances.

I had been to an organ recital in the large hall in the grounds of the Mormon Temple, and thought I should have plenty of time to get to the station, which seemed only a short distance away. The clear air deceived me, and I had to make a rush for my train, only to be told by the man at the wicket, " It's no good, the train's just pulling out." I brandished my umbrella, set, up a yell, and started across the lines. To my great relief the guard of the moving train called out, " You're all right," and put on the brakes. The passengers, crowded at the windows and car platforms, must have taken me for the President of the Line. I was pointed out as the man who had stopped the train, and I felt like the man who brought about a financial crisis in the Bank at Monte Carlo.

I stayed at a very fine hotel at Chicago, right on the shores of Lake Michigan. At all the hotels in Canada and the States there was always a lot of young fellows and girls who came in for dancing in the evenings from outside, and no doubt had to pay for this privilege, but as a resident I had, of course, free admission to watch the dancing. At this Chicago hotel I had to pay one and a half dollars, although they knew I was a resident and had no intention of dancing.

Off to New York, the last land journey, by the very fine " 20th Century Express" ! Willet and I met at the McAlpin Hotel. I got into touch by 'phone with James McCombie Murray and he dined with us. He was a bosom friend of my brother Charlie. I had not seen him for 50 years. What a delightful evening we had, with long talks of Aberdeen and old friends. I got his whole history out of him and have his permission to make use of it. As a youth he spent a short time in the London office of the Orient Line, of which his Uncle Anderson was head. He then took up coffee growing in Ceylon, fired by the success of some Aberdonians in that business, probably the Tytlers, whom he knew well. He did very well at this till the blight came, when he turned to teaplanting. He spent a lot of money in advertising his brand of tea in America, but the competition of men like Lipton with unlimited money to spend on advertising was too much for him and he lost all his capital. He gave up all idea of commercial

pursuits and harked back to his hereditary love for music.

He used to sing and play exceedingly well when a young man.

He studied music at Columbia University, especially singing and voice production, making researches with a professor of the University on the latter subject. He became Choirmaster to and trained the choir of the Philadelphia Cathedral, and gave private lessons, for which he got high fees. He sang at many concerts, and lectured on voice production before scientific men, such as Edison. This, in brief, was his career, which I think you will agree with me has been a very creditable and plucky one. By the way, he told me that the famous operatic prima donna, Mary Garden, is a daughter of his old friend, Robert Garden, whose wife was also a native of the Granite City. Garden is a very successful business man in New York. I remember his doing marvellous feats of strength in the old Gymnastic Club under the arches supporting Bridge Street. Of course, I was only a little boy at the time when he and Jamie were young men—a matter of a few years makes a lot of difference at that age.

The first day out from New York we went through the obligatory boat and life-belt drill. This was repeated even more carefully the next day—why, I didn't know. On the third day the engines slowed down and soon stopped completely for some time. I could get no explanation from the engineer who was showing us his department. He only smiled and said it was nothing, and this I found was the experience of others of the passengers. It was only on returning home that the mysterious occurrences were explained. I saw in one paper that the Captain, on the point of sailing, had received an anonymous note to the effect that an infernal machine had been secreted on board which was timed to blow us all up in mid-ocean.

Well, we had a fine passage to Southampton, and the home country looked so green and restful. The warm, gentle showers of rain, with interludes of sunshine, seemed to me a relief after the hard glitter of New York— " A soft day, thank God 1 A wind from the South with a honied mouth ; A scent of drenching leaves, Briar and Beech and Lime, White Elder Flower and Thyme, And the soaking grass smells sweet, Crushed by my two bare feet, While the rain drips, drips, drips from the Eaves."

The Student Pedlar ; or, How to Spend the Summer Vacation.

To those of you who are smitten with the wander-lust and blessed with a slender purse, let me show one way of getting an open-air holiday and plenty of adventure, whilst living all the time on the whims and caprices of that most lovable and fascinating body, the " general public."

Some years ago I paid a visit to the Chief Constable.

That High Authority, on the receipt of five shillings, and after seeing my references as to character and sobriety, and being satisfied that I was not an undesirable alien, gave me a Pedlar's Licence. With the coveted licence in my possession, I had the right to hawk my wares throughout the length and breadth of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but on being requested must produce the said licence to any Justice of the Peace, constable, or any purchaser of my goods. Armed with this I entered a " wee shoppie " in Queen Street, where pedlar's packs were supplied to the profession, and bought one valued at £1. It contained bootlaces, studs, writing pads, tawdry jewellery, purses, pins, needles, and all the usual stock-intrade of the pedlar.

Attired in an old kilt, frayed shirt with no collar, stockings with an occasional hole, and a pair of boots suspiciously thick in the sole for a tramp, I set off. Many of you know the winding road that leads from the Spital of Glenshee to the fruit-growing country round Blairgowrie. It was there that I elected to start—an admirable road, as houses are few and far between, and this gives the amateur tramp time to pluck up courage between each house of call. Even then my first venture required deep consideration, and I " wiled it wi' judeecious care." It was a thatched cottage, with whitewashed walls, roses round the door, all basking in the morning sun. Surely a kindly old soul must live here, I thought; and I imagined her murmuring, " Poor laddie, he's ower young to be reduced to this, I must buy something from him."

I unslung my pack, practised a wheedling voice and, tramp fashion, slouched to the door and knocked, my pulse doing twenty extra to the minute. I waited anxiously, one, two, three minutes, and then the door burst open and a buxom woman, her sleeves rolled up and her hands all flour, looked angrily at me, and before I could get out " Do you need any little thing to-day, missus? " the door was slammed in my face. I hoped at the time that some amateur King Alfred was looking after the oatcakes for her.

Humiliated, rebuffed, and dejected, I slung on my pack and marched off at a furious pace, wondering why I had ever been such an ass as to start this game. As mile followed

mile, however, confidence returned, and at the next house, a farmhouse, I entered into my kingdom. An old lady appeared, gazed through a pair of spectacles at my display, and after long deliberation bought three-halfpence worth of tape— hard-earned bawbees I thought, but nothing could stop me now.

Getting hungry, I essayed to get some food at a farm " toon." Mrs. Farmer looked hard at me, said " wait a minute," and in a minute out she came with a huge plate of Scotch broth and two enormous pieces of bread, and down I sat to it by the horse trough, while the farm labourers trooped in for their mid-day meal.

At a schoolhouse the school mistress, prim and proper, stated that she had everything she required, and that she always sent a weekly order to town for her wants, but, " seeing you have to make your living by it I shall buy a pair of bootlaces." No need to rub it in, I thought, and felt like throwing the laces at her and departing, but a tramp must learn to be humble and swallow his feelings. The sun began to wane, and a succulent, golden-ball turnip removed from a wayside field proved most refreshing : such I considered was the right of the tramp (I expect the Chief Constable thinks otherwise), and if ever I happen to own a field of turnips I shall try and remember it.

It was most pleasing to notice the gradual transformation of the countryside from the barren hills to the fruitful valleys, the heather giving place to fir trees, the firs to birch, ash, beech, and elm trees ; cottar houses to lordly mansions, a bare existence to prosperity—but not for the tramp. The owners of these poor dwellings who scraped the few necessities of life from an unkind earth or from a few " beasts," though they had slender purses, had open hearts, and always tried to help on the tramp by buying something, however little.

At the large houses one was more often turned away, if not with scorn, with indifference, by the hirelings of the rich— " Alas, the gratitude of men hath oftener left me mourning ! " A bed of hay, with a sack of sphagnum moss for a pillow, all provided by the lonely, widowed crofter Tam, was a downy couch indeed, and the sun had already made a good start before I woke from a dreamless sleep. Tam, who had done a good two hours among his turnips, seemed to murmur to himself, " Aye, aye they're a lazy lot, them tramps," and seemed duly surprised at my profuse thanks for a bed so comfortable as to make me sleep-in.

A baker's Ford van passed. The tramp shouted, " What about a lift." The driver answered, " Go to H— ! " and the tramp argued, " Well, why not let us go in your Ford." The driver's sense of humour won, and we sped into Blairgowrie

in our limousine, and I now agree with one of those hideous wayside advertisements to be seen on that road—" A million men with one accord, unite to praise the little Ford," and I am one of that million. (N.B.-I have no financial interests in Fords.)

Varying success followed. The gamekeeper bought a stick of vile shaving soap, and with the acumen of his kind asked, "What's the game: doing this for a wager? "—to be answered only by a non-committal smile. The farmer's daughter, her mother being out, bought a pad of flashy writing paper to impress her young man. The postman's wife " could do with " some darning needles, as she was always " tinin' " them. The biggest scoop of the day was when two ladies, evidently on holiday, were encountered enjoying the wayside sunshine. " The very things we need," they cried enthusiastically, as they bought combs, leather purses, and mysterious implements called "hair slides." Staggering under the unusual but pleasant load of five round shillings, the tramp went whistling on. Noon had fled by some hours when the pangs of hunger asserted themselves, and nought was to be seen except the great rasp fields of the Carse of Gowrie. Picking the fruit was in full swing, and with an ulterior motive uppermost in his mind the tramp entered a field, and on enquiring at the small booth by the gate if any assistance was required in culling the luscious berry, he was rudely thrown a big and a little pail, and told to get on with it " over yonder." The modus operandi was—sling the small pail round the neck, pick swiftly and cleanly into it, and each time it showed signs of overflowing, disgorge its contents into the big one. On satisfying the hunger that had driven me to this hard manual labour, I conscientiously started to pick the berries, suddenly realising that they were potential jam, and I used to be very fond of raspberry jam, especially when surreptitiously removed from the top shelf of the forbidden cupboard.

Berrypickers work in pairs, one on each side of a row, and my companion that afternoon was a young girl called Jean.

Her serious, bronzed face, peeping out from under an outsi:e in straw hats, somehow brought to my mind Burns's companion in the harvest field, Jean, who inspired one of his first efforts ; but, unlike him, I did not lose my heart to her, nor did the gracious Muse come to my aid. The speed and deftness with which she filled her pail made me gaze in admiration and not a little envy. Shy at first to talk to an uncouth tramp, she soon spoke confidently, and told me she had never been out of her native town Blairgowrie, but—and the very mention made her thrill—if the berry season was good, she was to get a holiday to Aberdeen. The whistle blew, I was weighed in

the balance, and, " only 7 lbs., you slacker," said our taskmaster, and l0id. was tossed over to me. Feeling as rich as Croesus and as care-free as a tramp, I strode off into the gathering dusk, and in one hour's time reached a small greengrocer's shop, the only emporium in a tiny, straggling village. You all know the kind of these country shops. One enters : a bell tinkles above the door, and the odour of bath soap battles with the smell of onions; the stench of paraffin wins by a short sniff over the fragrance of stale apples; and newspapers, melons, biscuits, cloth stuffs, and vegetables are also-rans in an overcrowded field of starters for the premier honour of leading odour. A little girl, in answer to the summons of the bell, appeared and just managed to peep over the counter between a bunch of bananas and a postcard displayer, and I enquired if tea could be supplied. " I'll go and see father," she said, and soon the answer " come awa' ben " was shouted. Father looked me up and down and said, " It's tea you want ; well, it's tea you'll get," and soon a huge mug of tea appeared, and with it one of the largest buns it has been my fortune to behold, and oozing from its equator was a liberal amount of " raspberry " jam. " How much will that be ? " I asked (don't use " will" in that sense in the Bursary Comp !). " Well, I don't know, you see we're not used to selling teas. Do you think 6d. too much ? we'll say 4d." I almost betrayed my professional brethren by protesting it was absurdly too little, but I remembered in time, paid the bill, 'and with a parting word of thanks once more took up the trail. Half an hour's tramp took me to a woodcutters' camp, and round the camp fire I did a roaring trade in bootlaces and shaving soap. " You'll find that sawdust a grand bed, kiltie," said one of the woodmen, indicating the heap by the sawmill, and so it proved.

Up at break of day, I washed in the little burn that babbled by, made some tea in a friendly cutter's hut, and, staff in hand and pack on back, I swung off along the soft, green path by the side of the road. There was a crisp coolness in the morning air, wild raspberries hung red and inviting on their numerous bushes, larks were singing aloft, and the cattle were leisurely browsing in the fields. A little shining object lying on the road drew my attention—it was a sixpenny bit—a lucky sixpence ; and it did prove a lucky day for me. Even some of the very tin-looking teaspoons made in Birmingham changed hands at 2d. a-piece, and two packets of " Marvel " pins were bought by one generous customer. The village blacksmith bought a small mirror—his shaving one had been cracked " this year back " and " ye ken oor grocer's nae half enterprising, for he hasna a glaiss in the shop." Surely an object lesson in village commerce, and I felt like offering the remainder of my stock to the offending shopman at wholesale prices.

A beautiful thatched cottage with scarlet pimpernel round the porch appealed to me, and I wandered up the path and asked the good lady who came to the door if she could give me some boiling water to make tea. " Come in and I'll make it for you," she said. The kitchen was a cosy place, and there seemed to be children in every corner and a few more in a cradle. Before I could protest (even had the desire been great) the mother of this large family said, " You'd better have a decent breakfast when you're at it," and there on the table were two boiled eggs, scones, oatcakes, and butter. Ye Gods ! no banquet ever tasted better ! Knowing that offer of payment would be an insult as well as look suspicious from a tramp, I distiibuted bootlaces and pencils and one or two knick-knacks among the numerous offspring, much to the surprise of the mother. During the course of conversation I had managed to elicit the name and address of my benefactress, and I have often wondered whether she ever connected the hamper of tea and provisions which I later sent her to ease my conscience with the amateurish-looking tramp who once consumed an enormous breakfast at her board one fine summer morning.

It was a delightful experience to encounter such insistent hospitality, and did more to strengthen my feeling of peace and goodwill towards men than a hundred conventions of Geneva.

Following another small scoop at a farmhouse which nearly cleared out my stock-in-trade, I nervously espied the real article approaching me—tattered boots, torn trousers, faded coat pinned at the neck to conceal the want of a shirt, and a ten-day's growth on his chin. " Can I sell you a fine penknife to-day, mister ? " he whined. " Can I sell you a strong bootlace ? " I countered, and made various mystic signs on the palm of my hand to impress him with my deep knowledge of the inner secrets of the profession. They passed. " What luck up your way ? " he asked, and I was suddenly stung with remorse that I had not made chalk arrow marks or knots and crosses to show where or where not was the good hunting.

A fill of baccy made him happier, but the fact that it was not Irish twist or some such brand made him suspicious: however, I explained that I had done well these last three days—some real soft marks away back ; and invited him to wash down the dust in a pint of foaming ale—an invitation which he accepted with alacrity. Poor devil, he was the real article all right. One shilling in his pocket, a small pack of goods and a large thirst were his assets. We passed a Post Office, and plastered on the outside wall was a recruiting notice, complete with the splendid figure of a Gordon Highlander in full-dress uniform. I suggested that he would make a fine soldier, for he was a well-built man, and finally left him

gazing wistfully at the notice wondering whether he should take the plunge or not.

I have but touched on a few of the many and interesting incidents that enlivened my road, but it may be sufficient to show you the possibilities of such a holiday. The sun was not always shining, and there were depressing moments, but, on looking back, I can honestly say I have never spent a fuller, more varied, or more amusing ten days.

Most things in a pedlar's pack are retailable (without profiteering) at 100 to 150 per cent. profit, and after paying all expenses, for I had occasionally to buy food, I found a credit balance of quite a few shillings, as well as a large credit fund of open-air health, and a store of reflections for years to come.

Let me end with a few practical hints for any of you who may wish to become the perfect vagabond :—don't wear a kilt, it's too Scotch ; don't wash too often, tramps abhor soap ; don't shave more than once a week, a growth of beard creates the atmosphere ; keep a diary, a stout heart, a few spare shillings, an old ground-sheet for the rainy days, an open eye for all the beautiful things of the road, a merry heart and a light spirit, and carry some trusty pocket volume for these delightful mid-day halts under the shade of some spreading tree—Borrow was my companion.

After a strenuous session of exams. and rumours of exams., it you put pack on back and strike for the wide, open spaces, you will at least feel the refreshing force of Borrow's doctrine of " the wind on the heath, brother."

More Scribblings of a Nonentity.

2.—On Babus.

To the Sahib who toils 'neath India's sun there is no greater source of joy than the babu. Kipling and the scores of modern novels dealing with what they call Anglo-Indian life have made the babu familiar to most people, but for the benefit of the uninitiated it may be well briefly to explain.

The babu is a clerk. " Clurk " he pronounces it, as our American brothers do. Anyone, therefore, holding a clerical position, whether it be in the Government, the police, the railway, or any other of the many services in India, is a babu. " Babu " to us sounds as if it were an appellation of contempt, but to the Indian it indicates that the nominee is one worthy of respect ; in fact cultivators in outlying parts frequently call the European "babu," thinking they are thereby conferring on him great respect. For the babu is an educated man. Your ideas and his own on this point

may be a little at variance, but as he produces his school or university " sartificates " to prove the point, you have no more to say.

The more educated among babus have the initials " B.A." after their names. Those who have not quite achieved this write with great pride " Plucked B.A." To have appeared in the B.A. examination is the cachet of an educated man : he considers it no disgrace to have failed, and solemnly goes through life with the legend " Plucked B.A." written after his name.

The chief thing our friend learns (apparently) at his schools and colleges is to call everything, not by its straightforward name, but by the most long-winded synonymous phrase he can think of. He learns also (apparently) to omit the definite and indefinite articles at places where they are required, and to put them in wherever they are not. Kipling's classical example of the babu who wished to inform his employer that his mother had died is typical of them all. " Sir, wrote the babu, " the hand which rocks cradle has kicked bucket."

But everyone knows the above. Here is a letter, reproduced verbatim, which I received from a station master the other day illustrating what I have just said. By way of explanation it is necessary to state that this particular babu was reduced in pay some months ago for some shady practices in which he was discovered to be indulging. This is his appeal for re-instatement in his former grade :— My Exalted Sire, The year 1927 is no more. The hoary planet has once more completed its revolution around the sun and made the world older by another year. History has closed its final chapter on the happenings of one of the most dismal and portentous years of the post-war period.

The year of clash and hatred and bickerings and strife is dead. Let us bury our feuds with it. Let us hasten to ring it out and ring in the new one, which is full of hope and promise, and which has given a lead to the release of prisoners from jail and the grant of numerous honours, making it a lasting memory in the annals of its history. In this auspicious and jolly field of factors of this new year, I should hasten to look to my every hope of your future in the one—the honoured Mr. G. T. Simpson—who is always near and dear to his subordinates, keeping interests at his heart for their sake, and who is a true lover of keen justice, and in whom I put all my prospects and hopes in future store, and thus recalling the glory of his love and justice, I frustrate (sic) myself at his lotus feet, and pray that he would, I believe, mercifully help me out by removing the reduction—a heavy shock of storm unfortunately brought against me. This will not only release me from the pain at heart, but will endow me with a new life.

May God grant your honour long life and prosperity is the prayer of HARAK CHAND.

Station masters provide one with quite a lot of amusement.

Some time ago I received a wire from one of these unconscious humorists, saying: "Tigers attacking station ; send two

swords first train." Of a certain similarity is the wire of a station master who was posted to a station in the wilds of the jungle. " Kindly send one man for my protection as I am fearing herewith lion and tiger." The babu in office who put this up to me for orders was an even greater humorist, for he penned thereon : " Sir, station master's request is not in order."

They are greater experts in the matter of obtaining leave than the office boys of the comic papers. I honestly believe that each babu, before leaving school, is taught all the standard reasons for asking for leave. And the reasons for overstaying it ! The following, from one of the latter cases, came in to-day and is typical :— Sir,-I was ready to start after completion of a period of my leave, but I was suddenly and accidently attacked by a devil—influenza— which made me hopeless, pushing me at the door of death. God helped me much and saved me.

Anonymous letters are fairly frequent. If any reader can enlighten me as to what is meant by the last one I received, I shall be much obliged :— Sir.—You have outed me and put me to great troubles. May God bless you ! You know that living in a sea to keep enmity with crocodile is not good ; it is always injurious.

The Indian poet who writes English is one of the joys of the land. Miss Yvonne Fitzroy, in her recent book on India, quotes a typical example of his work. An Englishman and a Bengali were discussing literature. " No doubt," said the Bengali, " your honour is aware that there are in Bengal native poets writing poetry, and moreover, poetry in the English language equal to the work of the divine and immortal bard." The Englishman tentatively enquired whether his informant could quote from any such work. " But certainly," said the babu, and proceeded to recite :— " I love Miss Purshotam ; I love her from my heart's botum ; I have loved her since last autumn.

Gee! Gee i "

One's own experiences are, I think, always more entertaining than those received second-hand. When I was leaving Jodhpur by train the other night, I met with one of my best.

Lord Ilchester was travelling by the same train, and as his lordship was somewhat late in arriving, the train was kept for him. I hopped out of my carriage when I found we were not starting, and sought the guard of the train. " What are we waiting for, babu ? " I said. " Sir," he said, " we are waiting for the Lord ! " G. T. Ten Days in the Heart of Europe.

Let us go a-wandering. We have been stuffing in the German University town for one hot month, two of us, " Grammar " F.P.s, and there are other three months ahead : here come the ten days of the Pfingsten Holiday, how shall we use them ? We shall go a-wandering. For the old Spring fret comes o'er us, the way is clear before us.

The red gods call us out, and we must go." .

We consult. Maps and time-tables are invoked, advice taken—only to be rejected, bank-books scrutinized and ways and means canvassed. We are here, divinity students, whose future holds little hope of being again on the Continent ; many oft-imagined places allure us with the magic of their names—Dresden, Strassburg, Venice, Florence, Innsbruck, Ulm, Munich, Rome ! And there is Switzerland, and what else not? Again the bank-books come out, the dilemma grows extra horns, till we are tempted to resort to the sortes vergilianae. But at last a combination of decisions, catastrophe, and German inefficiency (the last about as unusual as the " verboten " notice-board is usual) settles the matter and our route most pleasantly for us. We each draw a precious £10, and early—very early—one morning we are off, clad in Scout rig-out, bearing packs of prodigious size, fallen from the higher and more accustomed role of tramp to that of railway tourist, dritte Klasse !

The first day is real American sight-seeing. Ulm comes first, and we spend an awed half-hour contemplating the immensity of its cathedral, with its strangely stirring spire, the highest in the world. Before its impression has faded comes Augsburg, with its Fugger Haus, and the historic church wherein the famous Augsburg Confession was sealed.

The afternoon finds us in Munich, depositing our burdens in a sumptuous and extraordinarily cheap "Christliche Hospiz," and sallying forth to see the only one of the many wonders of Munich for which we have time, all the others being thus early in the day, 3 o'clock, closed. This wonder is the Deutsches Museum, and in it we bury ourselves for four long hours, absorbed and in a way stunned by the immensity of its scope and the completeness of its detail. In it every single science is represented and detailed chronologically in successive rooms in each department, leading the visitor on and through from its unknown far-off beginnings right down to the present day ; everything, even the coal mine and the battleship, being full size, and original pieces of apparatus representing every scientist of recent years, such as e.g. the

Magdeburg Hemispheres. Aberdonians though we are, we count our sixpence spent here one of the best investments we have ever made.

Next morning, again at an early hour, we are on our way to Kufstein, Innsbruck, the Brenner Pass, and Italy. The day is dull and wet, half the glories of the northern Austrian Tyrol are lost on us, but by the time we reach Innsbruck things are clearing, and we see some of the charm and sense some of the romance of that ancient Austrian town. Memories of A. E. W. Mason's " Clementine," read in " Grammar" days long ago, stir us, but we cannot linger, and ere long we are well into the Brenner. Climbing, twisting, burrowing, and circling, the track of this electrified system goes, and we gaze down into toy valleys and up to snowclad peaks, absorbing the geographical impression of the Austro-Italian Tyrol. The human impression comes at the stations, where the rain has brought out the Capuchin-like, pointed, hooded cloaks, and where, after Brennero, the Germano-Austrian gutturals give place to the Italian syllabics.

Feelings on the border run high, and make customs formalities stringent and unpleasant ; and even our British passports do not prevent suspicious snuffings at my portable Primus, which has leaked out not a little of its hardly-procured paraffin.

Tyrolese Alps give way to vine-land and smiling valleys ; the heat increases as our altitude drops, evidences of a gigantic electric scheme in process of completion appear, and I begin to exercise my little Italian on a friendly youth who has joined our train at Bozen. The results are surprisingly successful, and in consequence of his advice, when we reach famous Trento, scene of the Council of Trent of the 1560s, we change, and are off and circling right round till we have climbed high above Trento, and then, off south-east, and heigh-ho for Venice !

Dusk falls as we traverse a valley, and soon we run alongside beautiful Lake Primolano, in whose still waters the jagged distant Dolomites are reflected black against a golden sky.

And so, at 11.30 p.m., to Venice.

Evading shoals of importunate hotel porters, we make our way to board a vaporetto (Venice's steamboat tram car), only to be told that it runs at that time of night no further than the Rialto. We use it thus far, and then utilizing our sense of direction, make for the Campo San Giacomo e Filippo, wherein is the casa to which we have written booking a room.

In five minutes, to our own surprise, we have picked our way through Venice's maze of lanes, canals, and bridges, and burst astonished and wondering into the Piazza San Marco.

With bated breath we promise ourselves two days of delight

in this fairyland, and hurry on, past the Leones Constipati (what, anyway, is their proper name? We know no other that would do) to our night's lodging.

Two days we do spend, and these may be described, but Venice herself will not. She is a Fairy City of Waveland, and her charm eludes the skill of all save the painter and the choicest of word-weavers. We saw her wonders and glimpsed her soul, even in these two days, and those hours will ever live with us. Outstanding were the Piazza itself with the, at first, almost insignificant Basilica di San Marco, later to claim its inalienable and premier place in our fancies; its pigeons, and all the famous booty of the East inside and out the buildings gathered around the Piazza; outstandingly the Doges' Palace, whose inner charm and wonder and historic interest wonderfully fulfil the promise of its delicate yet simple exterior. Particularly in my case did the vast interior of the Hall of the Great Council excite a long-forgotten memory of " Grammar " days, as my eye caught the frieze of portraits of 75 of the 83 Doges of Venice. The story had been forgotten as soon as heard, yet the sight of these portraits touched some spring of memory, and I could see " C. D." trying to fix the meaning of the word " decapitated " in our woolly minds by telling us that when (he did not say " if " !) we went to Venice, we should see in the Doges' Palace paintings of the heads of every Doge, except one, who, executed for treachery, was followed even in death by the execration of the enemies who erased his portrait from the wall and hung a black cloth over the place with the writing : Hic est locus Marini Faletri decapitati pro criminibus. I looked, and there it was.

History and life are more real when one goes and sees.

An exciting sidelight on Italian political feeling came on Sunday night, after the reports of the Jugo-Slavian outrages came in. A band concert in the Piazza was three times interrupted, the last time conclusively, by demonstrating Fascisti carrying banners, who elicited the cheers of the crowd when they orated and caused Italy's two patriotic songs to be played, and particularly when they burned with cheers the Jugo-Slavian flag. Two days later we saw a " semiofficial denial" of this incident. So much for semi-official denials ! Mussolini's regime would take all my time to touch on : one cannot but wonder what the future holds for Italy.

For safety's sake, and with reason, all our time in Italy we never spoke of Mussolini except as a mythical " Armstrong."

The Ca d'Oro, Scala Minelli, and particularly the Scuola di San Rocco, filled with Tintoretto's works, among them his masterpiece, " The Crucifixion," and finished with wonderful and living wood-carvings—these and many others have bound us to Venice as already we are bound to Iona and Skye and

the Danish ports. A bathe in the Lido, long drawn out, and a moonlight gondola cruise capped the impression and left us with but four hours' sleep on our last night ere we made for Milan.

With four hours there the question arises, " How shall we spend that time ? " First we must eat, for although we are economizing, cooking for ourselves where we can, and avoiding hotels and restaurants where possible, yet our first economy here must be of time, and in any case we must sample the food of Italy as Milan eats it. Thereafter to the Chiesa S.M. della Grazie, pay L5 each (i.e. 5 lirae= 1/2), and we are ushered into the long, plain, damp-smelling hall, where, at the far end, Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece fills the wall.

Munich and Venice have engendered in us something like an appreciation of painting, but at first we are inclined to impeach da Vinci as a criminal rather than acclaim him as a master, for though he knew that they would not last, he used inferior pigments because with them he got the best immediate effects. Yet in spite of the faded, cracked, and peeled state in which it now is, the immortal picture of the Last Supper still lives and glows with the genius of the painter.

After that, time is for the Cathedral alone. Its large and spiky exterior promises little, but our first glance inside leaves us breathless. Immense, huge-columned, dim, and richly coloured, the interior is traversed by a thin shaft of golden sunshine which comes from a small window high up in the roof, picks out a line on a pillar and rests on a corner of the paved floor in a warm golden circle. The perfect symmetry about the great altar is balanced by a glow behind, and walking round we stand rather awed before the three huge stained-glass windows. There may be faults to find with the interior as with the outside, but no man can fail to admire the courageous conception, the patient execution, and the undoubted effect secured.

By now the warmth is terrific. In limp looseness we sag on our hard railway carriage seats, and only slowly recover as we approach Italy's northern boundary once more—this time on the western side. Lake Maggiore is almost tropical : its colouring is brilliant and refreshing after the baked plains of Lombardy, and it forms a pleasant transition between plain and mountain. Soon we are at Iselle and the boundary, and then into the Simplon, still I think the world's longest tunnel, and a triumph of engineering tenacity and skill. Then Brigue, the Rhone Valley with its power plant and its aluminium works glowing white below, and then the Loetschberg tunnel. From this we emerge after fifteen minutes and are immediately at Kandersteg, where we alight at 9.50 p.m.

Scout Chalet, where Herr Schmid, the genial caretaker, welcomes us. The view from my bed before I fall asleep is a thing of beauty : the river running clear nearby, dark woods behind it on the flanks of a mighty hill, peaked with snow and lit by the moon.

Here we spend four days, climbing, bathing, making excursions to the Oeschinensee and the Blauesee, getting soaked, sun bathing on the heights, playing Archie Hyslop's scout songs on the piano in the most appropriate environment, cooking for kings and feeding as royally, glad above all to be for four days at least in the old familiar atmosphere which interpenetrates all international distinctions with the magic of the Scout salute and handshake, and the underlying community of the Scout Law. Our last day finds us en route for Interlaken, where three hours are well spent. We consider that the situation is splendid, but the place horrible. Nothing in its own way could excel its interest—artistically, geologically, botanically, and in every human respect. But as a centre for the exploitation of the visitor, crammed as it is with hotels and wood-carving shops, and plastered with highly-coloured views of the Jungfrau as she appears from the hotel window, it almosts sickens us. Still, people must live, and if other people must transplant fashion's whirl and dance to profane Nature's boudoir, who can blame those who cater for them ? Anyway, even in Interlaken, the nature lover can find a peaceful place if he seeks it.

The return jpurney by the lovely Thunersee soothes our ruffled spirits, and every glance backward leaves something more of us among these pure, unchanging, satisfying peaks.

Berne is reached, and we spend some hours in its cool and pleasant places, and then on to Basel. Even there we are again that obnoxious person whom we so readily despise, the American tourist, for after a meal, out we go to see the place.

And glad we are to have done so, for to see Basel by moonlight reflected on the Rhine and revealing its more delicate charms by that magic light is to see it as well, we believe, as in any other way.

And on the morrow's eve we shall be back in Tfibingen, and hard at work for another ten weeks. Let it come ! Let us even in the interests of the bank-book go one brotchen short for teatime after this ! We have done it ! Seen and heard, and wondered ; made friends in four countries, and ever shall we feel the call of that city of dreams ; of those hills to which even the Cairngorms must yield some of the homage of two of their admirers ; of those lakes which Archibald admits even the dear old Loch of Skene cannot excel !

Cattle Watching in New South Wales.

In a recent letter to the Secretary of the F.P. Club W. ROGER HEPBURN (1913-25) writes from Sydney as follows :— " I had a letter a few weeks ago from a Gordon's College boy who is coming to Australia, along with his chum, some time this year. I shall do my best to help them along, but, as you know, I should be far more elated if I were to be meeting two ' Grammarians.' " I feel sure that there are boys at the old School who could do much better ' on the land ' in Australia than in offices at home. I am referring to those boys who have no earthly chance of gaining their Leaving Certificate, and who are inclined to favour an open-air life. I know from experience that boys who do not shine in the class-room at school are inclined to let themselves slip into a groove and are content to jog along. Now, if they came out here, they would not only be more useful to the Empire, but be gaining for themselves chances of success which, in my opinion, are not to be found in the Mother country. " Conditions in Australia are ideal. Certainly life is not all ' milk and honey,' but then life without a few ups and downs would become rather tiresome. Australia has no time for slackers any more than any other country. Many boys are a little bit afraid to come to the Colonies because they have heard various rumours about having to ' rough it.' I am no city dweller out here and have worked under various conditions in the Bush. By the way, the Bush consists of two distinct districts, viz.—' The Inside Country ' and ' The Outback,' Never Never' or ' God's Own Country.' Well, from experience I know the meaning of ' roughing it ' both in the ' Inside Country ' and the ' Never Never.' " In the ' Inside Country ' it chiefly means hard work, but hard work never killed anyone. Farming in Australia is not to be‘ compared with farming at home. The hardest part in ' mixed farming,' i.e. sheep and wheat, is wheat lumping and fencing. In regard to fencing, this is a good, clean game, but is very hard on a ' new chum ' until his muscles become hard. No one who has any love for horses can call driving a team all day hard work. The second variety of ' roughing it ' is not to be found in the ' Inside Country.'

In the ' Never Never ' it consists of nearly all the lesser hardships endured by the pioneers away back in the '70s. " The life in the cattle camps is about the hardest. A chap is in the saddle all day, from ' dawn till dark,' and on top of that he has to do his ' watch.' The ' horse-tailer ' always has first watch, as it is his duty to have all the horses

in camp at dawn, ready for the stockmen. The rest of the ' watches ' are sometimes balloted for, but usually each man has his own ' watch' ; e.g., I always had the two till four watch (2 a.m. to 4 a.m.). " Many people back home think that the life of a stockman (' cowpuncher in America) is a very nice, easy life. Believe me, it is far from easy. Cattle watching and buck-jump riding is extremely hard on the nerves. Certainly I admit cattle watching is easy, if the mob consists of quiet cattle, such as you see at home ; but when it is wild cattle you are watching, it is a little bit different. " The last mob I had charge of were not too polite. From Thurloo Downs to Wanaaring we had five set stages :— (1) Thurloo to Hillside Yards, (2) Hillside to Elsinora, (3) Elsinora to Bilpa Bore, (4) Bilpa Bore to Barchecker Yards, (5) Barchecker Yards to Blue Bush Paddock, on Wanaaring Station. Thus, you see, we had only two nights on which we had no need to watch. This last mob consisted of steers, fat cows, and scrubbers, plus a number of ' clean skins,' i.e. unbranded cattle, which we picked up on the way. The cattle were restless in the Hillside Yards and just at dawn they broke out. Naturally we all knew that the trip was not going to be too pleasant after that. " The night we camped at Elsinora the cattle went off camp three times—twice before I came on watch and once during my watch. I was riding a young pony, and as it was her first time on night duty I was a bit ' windy.' However, she behaved wonderfully, and only stumbled once. After the Elsinora escapade I was fifteen cattle short, but as they consisted of clean skins it did not matter. We held them at Bilpa and Barchecker, but they gave us a rare old time at Blue Bush. Naturally, by the time we came to Blue Bush we were all pretty tired. We had been in the saddle for about six weeks mustering and drafting, etc., and had been forced to come straight on to the track without having a spell off.

The mob went off camp at Blue Bush four times—once in the second and third watches, and twice on my own. " I was lying smoking at the camp fire when the cattle went off the first time. At first it looked as if S— was going to be beaten, as his horse was jammed in between the leaders of the herd. However, he won clear and brought theni back.

I was asleep when they went off in the third watch. I was awakened by the bellowing and stamping of the mob and the shouting of the men. At first glance I thought my number was up. In the glare of the camp-fire I saw the mob coming straight towards where I was lying. Needless to say I cleared out of the way double quick. However, just before they came to the fire they swept away to the right with E--

riding hard on their flank and gradually gaining to their head.

He brought them back in about half an hour's time and held them on the camp until they quietened down. I knew it was hopeless for me to try to get any more sleep, as I was next on duty. I dressed and boiled the billy, and then went on watch.

I was riding a famous old cattle-horse called Worth-watching.

Worth-watching was a cattle-horse born and bred. He would follow any bullock and cut him out or put him back in mob all on his own, and he was one of the fastest horses in the West when he was young. " I went on watch at 1.50 a.m. All was quiet ; in fact, it was the lull before the storm. At 2 a.m. they rushed me, but I was prepared and sent them back before they could break. They charged again at 3.15 a.m. It was the most unusual charge I have ever seen or heard of. A big, roan steer we called ' Ponto ' came out and I sent him back. Next the front stood up and moved towards me, and then came the crash and trouble. At the back of the mob there was a big tank and on each side fences. The front wheeled, and immediately the mob behind swept round and faced me, then wheeled again and charged over the woolshed fence. I sent Worth-watching for the gate, and he took it clean. After a great ride in the scrub and over the plain I managed to get to the lead. In the morning I was told that the other stockmen saddled up to give me a hand, but they heard my ' language ' in the distance and knew that I had won. All the cattle were in the mob when we counted them, but one big steer had a broken leg. Naturally he did not get much sympathy for misbehaving. After that I was granted the honour of being called a Bushman and an Australian. Believe me, I thanked my stars I could ride, as Worth-watching took me all over the place. He knew his job just as well as, in fact better than I did, so I left him alone. Had I started pulling him about he would immediately have ' propped,' and in all probability have sent me into the middle of the charging cattle. " I am posting separately a Stockman's Bell, as used in the far West, and a pair of shoes made by Australian Abos.

It is agreed among the majority of the pupils of the School that the Summer Term is one of the least disagreeable periods of a schoolboy's life. Far be it from us to shatter their vain beliefs by disclosing everything the future holds for them ; for as they ascend the ladder of learning they will, all too soon, discover for themselves that there are such necessary evils as the Bursary Competition and Medal Exams., which entail hours of laborious and harassing study. Nevertheless, in spite of everything which tends to rob us of the joie de vivre, we all look forward to the last term with its opportunities for cricket, tennis, and other outdoor activities. * * * One of the most convincing proofs of the esprit de corps of a school is the interest and kindness shown to it by its Former Pupils, for it means that the " Old Boys " have an affection for their School and a loyalty which must have been formed during their years of " durance vile." We have already recorded in past numbers of the Magazine donations to the School by Former Pupils, and yet another have we the pleasure of noting. After the Easter vacation, intimation was made in Hall to the effect that Dr. Thomas I. Rowell, C.M.G., had gifted £200 to be used as might seem best. It is probable that this sum will be added to the £500 presented

by Lieut.-Colonel Waters, and used for the installation of an organ and proscenium in the Hall. * * * While we are thanking some Former Pupils, we should also take the opportunity of congratulating others. It is no small honour for the School that one of its Former Pupils, Lord Meston, should have been elected to the exalted position of Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen. As a School we are proud of the distinction thus brought to us.

But not only have we a Chancellor of a University .to congratulate ! For another Former Pupil, Mr. Morrice Mackay, by his recent appointment to the high office of a Judge on the Scottish Bench, has also brought great honour to the School.

What, perhaps, appeals most of all to the pupils is that Mr. Mackay was, and still is, a very noted athlete—tennis, curling, mountaineering, and Rugby being his favourite sports. All-

round Grammarians are sure to be found in the most distinguished and responsible positions. * * * The School Orchestra is becoming one of the School's most flourishing societies, being much appreciated by outsiders as well as by the School. Besides ably performing at the Dramatic Society Concert last term, it has distinguished itself in other spheres of service. First of all the School musicians gave the Literary and Debating Society a splendid musical treat, under the magic wand of Mr. Mackenzie Forbes.

Then, in order that it might prove its prowess, the School Orchestra entered for the Music Festival and emerged victorious, with 81 per cent. to its credit, as well as a few complimentary remarks from the adjudicators. Another of its more recent performances was a half-hour concert given over the wireless at the request of the British Broadcasting Corporation. Its playing was greatly appreciated, and we may count this as almost an annual event. As can be seen from this record of its labours, the School Orchestra is reaching the highest heights of technique and skill and is becoming famous in the City as well as in the School. We wish it every success in the years to come. * * * A most interesting and instructive address was given to the School by Professor Ferguson of Aberdeen University on Empire Day. Fresh light was thrown on what had been an almost unknown subject to most of the pupils in a way such as could have been done only by a Professor of Logic. His subject was " Canada," and in a most skilful manner he sketched the history of that great country in its relations to the French and the English, enlivening his address with one or two humorous touches and a thrilling account of how one woman, along with a few cowardly soldiers and white-haired old men, heroically defended a fort against a large body of the enemy. That the School appreciated Professor Ferguson's address was clearly shown by the enthusiastic applause which was given when called for by Mr. Murison.

In the brilliant sunshine of the afternoon of the same day the Masters arrayed themselves against the boys in the annual cricket match. The play needs no enlarging on, it being sufficient to say that the Masters have not yet realised their hopes of beating the pupils, for again they fell victims, though fighting strongly, to the all-victorious 1st XI. * * * For various reasons the closing meeting of the Literary and Debating Society was postponed from 15th March to 3rd May. As in previous years the meeting took the form of a Musical Night, but this year's gathering proved to be even

more successful than before. The School Orchestra, whose presence at a Musical Evening is absolutely essential, had the valuable assistance of the Railwaymen's Male Voice Choir, both being under Mr. Mackenzie Forbes as conductor. Solos and piano selections were among the many and varied items of a most interesting programme. The attendance was very encouraging. It might have been better, perhaps, if the evening had not broken down as it did. Four members of the staff were amongst the very appreciative audience. The session for literary lectures and debates is now over, but we wish next year's members a most successful season, with large and enthusiastic attendances at every meeting. * * * THE BRIDGE OF SIGHS. [With many apologies to Thomas Hood.] * * * With the return of summer comes the revival of the Art Club, whose chief aim seems to be to utilize the very few and far-between periods of sunshine. Yet the Club still sketches and etches with increasing taste and artistry, the proof of which is seen in the Calendars and Sketch Books which they produce. Outings have been arranged and are being successfully carried through as far as weather permits. As usual the financial basis of the Club is very sound. We only hope that the members will be more fortunate as regards weather conditions, so that they may have every opportunity of bringing Nature in her beauty and grandeur before the eyes of those unable to wield the brush.

On Friday, 8th June, there was the usual enthusiastic and merry gathering at the Corporation Baths on the occasion of the School Swimming Sports. The Rector's Cup, a muchcoveted trophy, was won this year by A. M. Gill, while, once again, Keith House took first place in the House Race, with Byron House following second. * * * Since he feels that he cannot leave School unless he is sure that his name will be honoured and revered by succeeding generations, an inspired poet, with deep, swelling emotions and feelings, has passed on to us his noble thoughts and moving passions, revealing a life of bitter experience behind it. Let us, with Longfellow— " Stay and read this rude inscription, Read this Song of Hiawatha."

While penning these last few lines a sudden thought has struck us, leaving us in a state of gloom and despondency.

Why? The time draws near for our departure from this noble seat of learning, this glorious School, with every one of its past years crowned with honour and its future years promising ever-increasing renown. Many a pleasant day has been spent within its airy and sunny class-rooms ; many more, perhaps, unpleasant ones. Now it is, as we leave behind us this magnificent edifice, with its rich store of wisdom, that our heart grows heavy and our lips fail to utter our emotions. Yet we can carry with us happy memories of the days and months spent in our School, and we look to the present pupils to uphold and enhance the prestige of the School both in sport and scholarship.

Random Notes.

A member of the Middle School, whose knowledge of history is obviously not his strongest point, informed an astonished master that the Earl of Warwick was followed to the Battle of Flodden by a great company of retrievers.

Although no mention is made of it, we naturally conclude that he also took an electric hare with him. Hence the reason why the Scottish army " went to the dogs." * * * know why Lamb should be to One learned youth wishes given the credit for writing the essay entitled " A Dissertation upon Roast Pig." He considers that there is sufficient internal evidence to show that Bacon is the author.

We would point out that, although his opinion as to the authorship of that famous essay is both appropriate and ingenious, it is certainly not correct. * * * English Master (teaching grammar) : " What are the people of China called ? " Bright Youth : " Chinese, Sir." Master : " Correct ! The people of Ceylon ? " Bright Youth (confidently) : " Celanese, Sir ! " [ Loud laughter.] * * * We have reason for believing that in spite of Fairway's tragic failure in the Derby, golf is steadily becoming more and more popular in the School. There was a time when the masters could beat the boys at this fascinating pastime, but recently they have not met with much success. Last year . . . but we had better not be boastful, as the annual match has not yet been played, and the Masters are said to have several " dark horses amongst their number. They have been seen practising assiduously, and placing their drives

in the " rough " (quite intentionally, of course) so that they may become adept at pitching the ball on to the fairway again. * * * On looking over past issues of the Magazine we find that our predecessors had even a more unenviable task than we have. Their work was annually subjected to a considerable amount of sharp criticism at a special meeting of the Literary and Debating Society, and we also gather that they had to undergo a cross-examination. Woe to them if they had been so negligent as to fail to insert an apostrophe in its proper position ! * * * We wonder if Byron ever enjoyed the experience of writing Random Notes. Perhaps he was thinking of the criticism he received at the hands of the Literary and Debating Society when he wrote that scathing satire, " English Bards and Scotch Reviewers." However, neither Mr. Hudson nor Mr. Albert make any mention in their very excellent treatises on the History of English Literature of any work which Byron contributed to the Grammar School Magazine. Accordingly, we are under the necessity of concluding that Byron was never given the honour of writing Random Notes. * * * In English examinations we are always advised to add, if possible, a touch of humour to our work, in order to keep the examiner good-tempered. But the Modern who stated in the " Highers " that Socrates was another name for Satan was going a little too far. * * * The term is drawing to a close and our task is ended. We now join the ranks of those who, having once written Random Notes, read the efforts of their successors with feelings of mingled pity and contempt.

French Decoration for Dr. Cormack.

It was with great pleasure that the School learned a short time ago that the French Government had awarded the " Palmes Academiques " with the rank " Officier d'Academie " to Mr. A. A. Cormack, M.A. (Aberd.), D. es L. (Rennes).

This decoration was instituted by Napoleon in 1808 as an honorary distinction for scholarship, and is rarely granted to foreigners.

The award is made by the French Ministry of Public Instruction, and the diploma is signed by the Minister of Education. The decoration is of silver, and consists of miniature branches of palm and laurel leaves, joined top and bottom in the shape of a hollow oval, one and a half inches long. The ribbon is violet.

Another Gift to the School.

Very shortly after the last Magazine appeared, the Secretary of the F. P. Club received the following letter :— Bicknor, Suffolk Square, Cheltenham, 7th April, 1928.

Dear Mr. Watt, I think you know how I have been a long and very interested observer of the almost superhuman efforts you have made and done on behalf of my old School, and when I think of it all, your work simply amazes me, and I would like in appreciation thereof to send you a small cheque which I would wish you and the Rector conjointly to spend in whatever way you consider most beneficial and useful for the School's good. Your Magazine always is a great pleasure to read.

At a meeting of the Secondary Schools Management Committee of the Aberdeen Education Authority held in May, Mr. Watt intimated his receipt of the gift, and said that he and the Rector were in agreement in suggesting that it should be utilized in furthering the scheme, already approved by the Education Authority (as reported in the last Magazine), for the installation of a Pipe Organ and Proscenium in the Hall of the School. He recalled that this scheme was the outcome of the donation of £500 received last year from Lieut.-Colonel George Waters, but that the Authority had decided that the work could not be put in hand until it had been ascertained whether means could be devised of raising a further contribution towards the estimated expenditure on structural altera, tions and other expenses in connection with the organ. The Committee was of opinion that, in view of Dr. Rowell's gift, the scheme should now be carried through, and the Authority has concurred in this view.

Thomas Irvine Rowell, C.M.G., M.D., was a pupil at the School in 1854-55, when the late Sir William Duguid Geddes was Rector. He graduated in medicine at Aberdeen University in 1863, and after being in private medical practice at Singapore, entered the Colonial Medical Service as Principal Civil Medical Officer, Straits Settlements, in 1877. He retired in 1891, having been appointed C.M.G. on 1st January, 1890. Dr. Rowell was born on 30th November, 1840, and so is in his 88th year. He is, as he surmises in his P.S., the oldest member of the F.P. Club, but Mr. Robert Collie Gray, S.S.C., Edinburgh, who was born on 11th July, 1842, entered the School three years earlier than Dr. Rowell—in 1851, and Mr. Harvey Hall, advocate, Aberdeen, who was born on 27th February, 1841, entered the School in 1852.

School Cricket.

Up to the time of writing, the present cricket season has not been a very successful one. Of the seven matches played, School has won two, lost three, and drawn two. Two of our best fixtures, namely, those with the Crescent 1st XI and Strathallan, were not played owing to the miserable weather conditions. The School, however, has high hopes of winning its remaining fixtures, for of late there has been an all-round improvement in the team, the fielding especially being very good.

Scout Notes.

The short term that has passed since the last number of the Magazine was issued has been a busy one among the Scouts. The indoor employments of the winter season have been finished off and the outdoor season has come round again. The Patrols are holding week-end camps and all arrangements have been made for the Troops' summer camps. A new Pack of Wolf Cubs has been formed, and a few changes in personnel have to be reported.

The 9th Troop are losing Assistant Scoutmaster James E. Smith, who is leaving for Venezuela at the end of June to start chemical research work with an oil company. During this winter, as Scoutmaster Nelson has been very much occupied with examination work, the main burden of the management of the Troop has fallen upon Mr. Smith's broad and capable shoulders, so that the Troop's loss is a big one. His place will not be easy to fill, for he knows the Troop thoroughly, having passed through every rank in his long period of service. His energetic and reliable character will long be missed. All the Scouts wish him a happy time on the other side of the Atlantic, and hope that he may strike oil. The Troop presented him with a pipe as a parting gift.

Mr. William Donald, M.A., one of our Modern Languages Masters, has kindly consented to act from September as Rover-mate of the 9th Troop Rovers, and a sounder man for the job could not be found, we are quite certain. Mr. Wallace Porter, who held the post, has had to vacate it, as his Cub-mastership gives him quite enough to do. The important dignity of Recorder of the Minutes of the Officers' Club Meetings has been conferred upon Instructor W. Wilson M. Ross of the 1st Troop.

We announced in the last number of the Magazine that it was proposed to form a Thirty-eighth Pack of Wolf Cubs. The Pack has now been formed, and consists of twelve boys under Commissioner J. Fenton Wyness and Patrol Leader Stuart Middleton, with the assistance of • Second Joseph R. Carrie of the 17th Troop.

The Troops, meanwhile, have continued with their winter's work.

The 1st Troop have been practising fretwork, leatherwork, basketwork, and tent mending, and studying the cyclist's, swimmer's, ambulance, and camper's badges. The 38th have now nearly all passed the Second Class Badge Tests, and all, it is expected, will have passed them before the end of the season. The other Troops tell a similar tale of interesting activity. Representatives of all the Troops are found in Dr. Simpson's class for the Pathfinder's Badge.

At the Scouts' Headquarters Bazaar in March the Grammar School Scouts made themselves useful in various ways, selling at the stalls, fetching and carrying at the tea-tables, taking the money at the doors, conducting the traffic, and clearing up the mess. At the Floral Exhibition of the Crippled Girls, in the same month, the 1st and 9th Troops also lent their aid as chocolate sellers. This winter the 1st Troop has erected a new store, were they can put their trek-cart without taking it to pieces. The stores can now all be kept quite apart from the main building, which will ensure safe-keeping of equipment during the winter.

The 9th, 17th, and 38th Troops held Open Nights on different dates during the Spring. The 17th carried out an interesting and amusing programme illustrating various scouting and cubbing activities before a large gathering of parents and friends, who were particularly struck by the "cheerful spirits and excellent tone of the Troop. were present in the Troop's headquarters. Their programme included a dramatic performance, for the Troop contains some excellent young actors. This and all their other shows were carried out in the efficient and businesslike way in which the 9th Troop always works. Last came the 38th's Open Night, in the School Gymnasium, at the beginning of June. The Troop gave a demonstration of Scouting work and play, and impressed the spectators by their smartness and keenness.

The Open Nights mark the conclusion of the winter season of indoor activities. With the shy approach of summer, the Scouts' thoughts turn to the open air, and particularly to camping. This began in the Easter holidays. Twenty-two of the 1st Troop camped this Easter at Midmar. There they were visited by the 9th, who were camping at Dunecht. The annual game of football between the two Troops was fought on this occasion, and the 1st avenged their last year's defeat by a victory (4-2). The Patrol Leaders and Seconds of the 17th camped at Braemar in the " Chalet," where they had a cosy time among the snow. They did a great deal of hill-climbing and enjoyed the frosty, mountain air. The 38th held their camp at Cluny in a meadow beside the Castle, where the 1st Troop visited them—the first time these two Troops have ever had the opportunity of exchanging politenesses.

The Scouts were very lucky, for the first week of April, when these camps took place, was the only week of consistently good weather that we have had this spring. In fact, the weather this Easter camping week was the best for a large number of years. The 1st Troop wish to thank Mr. Wisely for once more lending a lorry to convey their baggage to camp. On the May Holiday week-end the Scouts went into camp again, this time by Patrols, and have been doing so, and will be doing so, every possible week-end throughout June.

The usual June events have been taking place. The Scouts' Swimming Sports took place on 31st May, and though neither Scouts nor Cubs Trophy was won by a Grammar School Troop, the 1st Troop took second place for both, and won the Inter-Troop relay race. The Annual Field Day took place on 13th June at Kincorth Moor, as usual, where the Troops were out in force. After that the contest for the County Flag was fought out on 23rd June. This year the competition did not take the form of a camp, as usual, but of an afternoon's outing with sealed orders. (The Scouts' Athletic Sports, which usually take place this month, have been postponed till September.)

All these events that fill the busy month of June lead up to the climax of the scouting year, the Summer Camps. As soon as the School session ends in prize-giving and cheering, there will be no holding the Troops back. The 1st are going further afield than usual, to Huntly, and have secured a very suitable site overlooking the town, above the junction of the Bogie and the Deveron : it is known as Rough Park, Pirie's Mill. The Cubs will be encamped nearby. For obtaining this site for them, and also for arranging to have their baggage conveyed there from the station, the Troop is indebted to Mr. John B. Summers, our Gymnastic Master. The 9th Troop are going back again to the same beautiful surroundings as they occupied last year, the wooded grounds of Pitfour House. The 17th are seeking a new site, at Dee Castle,Inear Dinnet, on the south bank of the Dee. The 38th will be not far away from them, to the north of Dinnet, beside Loch Kinnord.

The Rugby Football Section.

At the Annual General Meeting, held in the School, the following office-bearers were elected for next season :— Captain—N. D. Begg ; Vice-Captain—J. M. McLeod ; Hon. Secretary and Treasurer—A. M. Fixtures have been arranged for the 1st XV with Black Watch, Cambuslang, Dundee High School F.P.s, Edinburgh Institution F.P.s, Highland, Hillhead High School F.P.s, Panmure, and Perthshire ; and for the 2nd XV with Glenalmond and Panmure.

It is hoped that as many as possible of those leaving School this year will join the Section.

The Cricket Section.

The cricket season is now in full swing and the Section is looking forward to a successful season. The personnel of the Section is much the same as last year, but we have secured three promising members in A. J. M. Cruickshank, A. J. Lockhart, and G. P. Marr. We also hope to have the services of Colin H. Miller, who is meantime home on holiday from abroad. He along with Alan McBain are assisting Aberdeenshire, but we hope to have them both on our side in some of our important fixtures.

So far the Section has played five matches : three have been won and two lost. Two fixtures had to be cancelled owing to bad weather.

Evening matches have been arranged for the benefit of members not playing on Saturdays. Any Former Pupil desirous of joining the Section should turn up at practice on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings.

The Tennis Section.

We have a larger membership this season, and the members have been able to take advantage of the quite good weather we have had.

The first match was played against the School and resulted in a win for the F.P.s by 6 matches to 2, one match being unfinished. On 2nd June we had a very enjoyable match with Ferryhill, defeating them by 7 matches to 2.

Any boy leaving School at the end of this term may join for the remainder of the season, the subscription being 15/-.

The London Section.

As is generally known, the Club has in London a very flourishing Section, which is composed of members residing in the Metropolis and within a radius of approximately 50 miles thereof. At present there are about 230 members in the Section, the President of which is Lord Meston of Agra and Dunottar, K.C.I.E. During the winter season the Section arranges a series of Informal Dinners, at which one of the more distinguished F.P.s delivers a paper or an address on some topic of the spay or on some other subject in which he is especially interested.

These Dinners are quite informal affairs, morning dress being worn.

They are well attended, and afford Old Boys resident in the neighbourhood an opportunity of meeting together and renewing friendships of bygone days. The price of the Dinner (which is of excellent quality) is very moderate, and is collected during the evening.

It is realized that of the large numbers of F.P.s scattered throughout the Provinces (including those in Aberdeen), there must be many whose business or other interests take them to London from time to time, and it is felt that an opportunity should be extended to them to take advantage of the meetings in London to spend an hour or two with some of their old friends.

The President and Committee of the London Section accordingly desire to extend a very hearty welcome to any Old Boy visiting town to spend an evening with them.

The following dates have been arranged for next season (1928-29) :— Thursday, 29th November, 1928: Address by Mr. Thos. Hardie, M.Inst.C.E., Chief Engineer to the Gas Light and Coke Company, London, on " The Gas Supply of London."

Thursday, 31st January, 1929. (Address to be announced later.)

Thursday, 14th March, 1929 : Address by Mr. J. Murray Easton on " Germany after the War—a Superficial View."

The meetings will be held at 7.30 p.m. in the Engineers' Club, 39 Coventry Street, London, W.I (near Leicester Square).

The March function will, in alternate years when the International Rugby Match between Scotland and England takes place at Twickenham, be arranged for the Thursday prior to the match.

The Secretary of the Section is Mr. Thos. D. H. Brown, Esbourn, Lawrie Park Crescent, Sydenham, S.E.26, who will be pleased to reserve a place for any provincial or other member who desires to attend one or more of these functions, on hearing from him ; or, if time does not permit an Old Boy to make arrangements beforehand, all he need do is to ask for the Secretary on his arrival at the meeting.

HE GRAMMAR SCHOOL provides for Boys a complete course of Study, both Elementary and Secondary, Classical and Modern.

The School, which is organized in three Departments—Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools—contains excellent laboratories handsomely furnished and equipped, including a Chemical Laboratory, Science Theatre with Physical Laboratory attached, Natural Science Laboratory, Art Room, Gymnasium, Workshop, Botanical Garden, Library, Reading Room, and Museum.

Pupils in the Lower School are prepared for the Control Examination of the Education Authority, while the Senior Classes are examined for the Day School Certificate (Higher) and the Leaving Certificate of the Scottish Education Department, passes in the latter examination being recognised as exempting from further examination in the corresponding subjects of the Preliminary Examination for graduation in Arts, Science, Law and Medicine at the Scottish Universities.

The situation of the School in the West end of the City is open and healthy. The Class-rooms are large, and the Grounds for Recreation include separate Play-grounds for Juniors and Seniors, Tennis Courts, and a field for Cricket and Football.

HE HIGH SCHOOL provides a liberal education for Girls from 5 or 6 to IS or x9 years of age, and aims at fitting them for home life and for professions open to women.

The School buildings occupy an excellent and spacious site in the West end of the City. The furnishings and equipment of the School comprise, in addition to numerous Class-rooms fitted up with many modern conveniences for teaching purposes, an Assembly Hall, Gymnasium, Art Rooms, a Lantern Room, a School Library of 2,000 volumes, spacious Cookery and Laundry Rooms, and a suite of Laboratories of the most approved description for the teaching of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

The School is organized in three Departments—Infants, Primary, and Secondary.

The Classes in the Infants and Primary divisions are graded in accord. ance with the requirements of the Scottish Code. The pupils are prepared for the Control Examination of the Education Authority. Pupils in the Secondary Department are prepared for the Day School Certificate (Higher) and the Leaving Certificate of the Scottish Education Department. The subjects of study include—Scripture, English with History and Geography, Mathematics, Classics, Modern Languages, Experimental and Domestic Science, Art, Class Singing, and Physical Exercises.

Pupils whose parents desire it are taught Theory and Practice of Music (Pianoforte, Violin, and Organ) in preparation for the Examinations of Trinity College of Music, London, and of the Associated Board of the Royal Academy and Royal College of Music. Advanced pupils are prepared for the Licentiate of the Royal Academy.
