Another session has all but run its course, and thoughts of holidays fill the schoolboy mind. It is with exceeding joy that most look forward to the holidays, but more tender feelings and even regrets enter the minds of some of us when we think that in a week or two our schooldays will have ceased for ever. School-life will be but a memory ; a wider life will have been entered upon. In this new sphere it will be our duty to keep up the fair name of the School in which we have passed many a pleasant day.

We have to record with the deepest sorrow that since the last issue of the Magazine appeared, Death has been at work in the School. We have lost one of our best and most respected masters—Mr. Brownie. For eighteen years he laboured faithfully and diligently in the School, his work, always of the best, being marked by a thoroughness which was so characteristic of him. But suddenly and unexpectedly he was taken from amongst us, and by his death the School, has sustained a great loss. His photograph, which we are glad to be able to give, will be appreciated and kept by many F.P.'s as a memento of their own days in his classes.

Mr. Brownie's place will be hard to fill, owing to the facility with which he could teach either Classics or Mathematics, but so far as his duties as a Classical master are concerned, the School has found a splendid successor to him in Mr. Michie, who was one of Professor Ramsay's assistants last winter. $P The much-dreaded Bursary Competition has come and gone, and is now looked upon as a matter of ancient history. The masters and the School in general have good reason to feel pleased with the results, which were very satisfactory. We would first congratulate A. Milne and H. T. Sorley, who fulfilled our high expectations of them by taking the second and seventh places on the list respectively. Special mention must also be made of the success which attended some of Class V. on their first attempt—we mean W. R. Tennant, who gained the twelfth place, and A. Hyslop and R. S. Lawrence, who were nineteenth and twentieth respectively. To get into the first dozen at one's first trial is a splendid achievement, and Tennant deserves our heartiest congratulations. We expect to see him at the top of the list next year.

e With the return of spring, football has ceased. The 1st XV. had a very successful season, which culminated in the trip to Edinburgh to play George Watson's College XV. Although the Aberdeen Schools' team did not win, they played a good game, the three-quarters, who were all from the School, being specially brilliant.

The " Watsonian " speaks in high praise of their play. The photograph of the XV., which we are pleased to present with this number, will recall more vividly than words the players and their deeds.

But though football is gone, cricket has come, and now the sound of the bat resounds all over our field. Unfortunately, this is not the only sound that is heard, since it not infrequently happens that a savage howl is wrung from the lips of some fellow who has felt the force of a cricket ball travelling at " slogging" pace.

No serious injury has been sustained yet, which is indeed wonderful, considering the number of games that go on at the same time. There is but one remedy—a new field, and our hopes of this being soon realized is strong within us.

The 1st XI. started the season well, but since then there has been a disappointing change, the last three matches having been lost. The bowling is good, but the batting very weak. More practice is required at the nets, and then we may expect good results. But a number of matches remain to be played yet, and the eleven intend to show an improvement in them.

We have already stated that the School requires a playing-field; we have also another want—a swimmingbath. This want has been felt for years, and still we have not had it supplied. Will the F.P.'s help us, or will the new School Board do so? A glorious day indeed would it be when the School possessed a swimming-bath of its own.

While on the subject of swimming, we may say that the Annual Swimming Sports have been settled to take place on Friday, the 1 1 th of June. We are afraid the date is too late for allowing a report to be inserted in the Magazine, but an interesting programme of events has been arranged. t9.

It was feared that there would be no Swimming Sports this summer owing to lack of time for practice. The School Board, however, with most creditable promptness, upheld our petition for the restoration of the old halfholiday on Wednesdays. By the shortening of the forenoon interval, the hour allowed us on Wednesday afternoons is made up for during the week.

Another "Debater" season has been successfully brought to a close. Interest was well maintained during the whole winter, though there was a slight falling-off in numbers towards the end. Financially, the season was an extremely good one, and no little praise is due to the energetic Secretary for his efficient management of the business of the Society. It is likely that the Society may purchase some new pictures for the School Hall with the surplus funds.

As a " Debater" finale, a concert and dramatic performance were held in the School Hall. " Box and Cox " met with the heartiest and most deserved applause. To all

the ladies and gentlemen who gave us their services, and so• helped to make the Concert a success, we would render our warmest thanks.

On Thursday, the 8th April, the Annual Gymnastic Assault was held in the Hall before a crowded attendance of spectators. The drills and exercises were all smartly performed, even by the youngest. In the open high jump, which excited great interest, Milne (Classical) and Duncan (Modern) tied for the first place, their jump being five feet three inches. The whole proceedings did credit to the abilities and skill of the instructor, Mr. Summers. aQ

The mention of Classical and Modern makes us wonder if the old rivalry between the two sides of the School is dying out. There was no Classical v. Modern football match last season, and, so far, there has been no such encounter on the cricket field, though these two matches used to be the first on the fixture cards. We should like to know if the grand struggles of old still take place in the upper corridor, along with the stirring scenes of the " Black Hole."

The number of boy scouts in the School seems to be rapidly increasing. During last winter Commander Hayward, R.N., kindly taught them the Morse code and semaphore signalling. The scouts connected with the School intend to go into camp at Corgarff in July, and to help to raise the necessary funds a conceit was held in April, the Rector, who takes a keen interest in the movement, presiding.

CO) Eg By the transference of Lieut. Garrett, R.N., to Sandgate, we have lost a gentleman who was well known at the Grammar School. To him we owe our beautiful Union Jack and also the Royal Ensign which graces our walls.

He will be remembered as being one of those who got a branch of the Navy League started in the School. The best wishes of the School follow him in his new duties.

Owing to unavoidable reasons, the Physical Registration is much later this year. The registration is both useful and interesting, but, at the same time, it means much labour for the Rector and his assistant. It is hoped that by next year the work will be under the charge of medical men altogether.

We must thank Mr. W. P. Milne for his article on " Pedagogues." We imagine that his "Doric" will " stump" not a few members of the Grammar School, Aberdonians though they be.

Sir William MacGregor, G.C.M.G. (1866-7), at present Governor of Newfoundland, has been appointed Governor of Queensland. A native of Strathdon, he entered the Fourth Class of the Grammar School in April, 1866, at the age of 19, and he continued at the School until October, 1867, when he entered the University as Second After graduating in Medicine, he received an Bursar. appointment as Chief Medical Officer in Fiji, becoming, after a time, Receiver-General and Administrator of the He has subsequently held the posts of Government.

Acting High Commissioner and Consul-General for the Western Pacific, Administrator of British New Guinea, Governor of Lagos, and Governor of Newfoundland. In this last position he has been regarded as by far the most successful Governor the Colony has had in modern times, handling a succession of difficult questions with rare judgment. His record is one of which the School may well be proud, and the hope may be expressed that the Club will, at no distant date, have him as its guest at dinner.

Aberdonians—including, of course, many " Grammar" boys—have the reputation of being world-wide in their distribution. It was therefore only to be expected that an Old Boy would be first at the South Pole, or as near Lieutenant to it as human being has ever penetrated.

Jameson Boyd Adams, in the capacity of meteorologist, accompanied Lieutenant Shackleton in his Antarctic expedition, which is now on the way home, and was one of the four who penetrated to within 97 miles of the South Pole. Apparently he and his companions had many

hairbreadth escapes, and we hope that the Old Boys in Aberdeen will soon, along with the present pupils, have the pleasure of hearing from Lieutenant Adams at first hand the thrilling account of his adventures while "farthest South." When the " Nimrod" was being visited by the King and Queen at Portsmouth before setting out for the Antarctic, he had the special honour of accompanying the Queen, Lieutenant Shackleton being along with His Majesty.

Robert W. Lyall Grant, M.A., LL.B. (1884-91) has received the appointment of Attorney-General to the NyasaHe will be stationed at Blantyre, land Protectorate. where he will hold a seat upon the Executive and Legislative Councils of Nyasaland. He will act as legal adviser to the Government, and among his other duties will be the drafting of ordinances for the Protectorate, and also the conduct of important trials. He was called to the bar in Edinburgh in 1903, and in 1905 he gained the Vans Dunlop Scholarship in Scots Law and Conveyancing. His brother, Henry F. Lyall Grant (1888-95), captain in the Royal Artillery, is at present stationed at Aden.

We congratulate Ian K. Burnett on the important post he has got as Librarian at the Royal Scottish Museum.

We understand that promotion comes quickly in this department of the service.

Our Old Boys are strong in journalism. Alexander Webster has been for the past ten years a leading member of the" Sportsman " staff. He also writes under the name " Veritas " of the " Birmingham Daily Post." He is now founder and editor of a new sporting paper, " The Racing Outlook." He is a cousin of William Webster of the 'Shire Cricket Club.

The famous London preacher, Dr. J. Cumming, who succeeded Edward Irving in the Scotch Church, Crown Court, left our School about 1823, and took his M.A. degree at King's College in 1827.

J. Ninian Comper has been selected to design the Bunyan window which is to be placed in Westminster Abbey by public subscription.

The " London Gazette" recently announced that the King had been graciously pleased to sanction the appointment of Dr. James Cantlie as a Knight of Grace in the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in

It exists for philanthropic VIII., was revived in 1827. purposes, and to it the inauguration of the street ambulance system and the Red Cross Society was due.

John Brebner Spalding, late schoolmaster, Inchmarlo, died early in May. After being attached to the army as a teacher, chiefly in Malta and India, he became a civil teacher, his first and subsequent appointments being under the School Board at Banchory.

Bertram John Cook (1892) has recently been appointed a factory inspector at Southampton under the Home Office.

James C. Philip, Ph.D., D.Sc. (1886-9), Assistant Professor of Physical Chemistry at the Imperial College, South Kensington, has in preparation a book entitled "The Romance of Modern Chemistry." Dr. Philip has recently been lecturing in London University on the relation of chemistry to botany.

Basil M`Killiam died in Aberdeen in April, aged 6o years.

William Logie, who recently went out to British Columbia to take up farming, died at Vernon in March, at the age of 25. Before going to Canada, he was for a time in South Africa, being unable to complete his course at Aberdeen University owing to ill-health.

The death occurred in February at Queenstown, Cape Colony, of William Sivewright Park, M.A., M.B., C.M., A short time after who entered the School in 1877. graduating in Medicine at Aberdeen, he went out to South Africa, and built up a practice in Lady Frere.

Alexander Charles (1885-9), solicitor and bank agent, Inverurie, died in the end of March, aged 37 years. He was a keen volunteer, and latterly was a captain in the Territorial Force.

George Herbert Mair, M.A., has recently joined the editorial staff of the " Manchester Guardian." The edition of "Wilson's Arte of Rhetorique, 1560," which he has been editing for the Clarendon Press, appeared a few weeks ago.

Francis Strachan Marr, M.A., B.Sc. (Agr.), died suddenly at Breslau, Germany, in the middle of May. He graduated in Agriculture in Aberdeen in 1906, and had latterly gone to Germany to continue his training in agriculture.

The following Old Boys have become life members of the Club :— Major Charles John Robertson Milne, M.B., C.M. (188°1888), of the Indian Medical Service (Bengal) ; Easton Gibb, the senior partner of the firm of Messrs.

Easton Gibb & Son, with whom has been placed the contract for the construction of the naval base at Rosyth ; Alexander B. Butchart, who is farming in Alberta, Canada; W. A. Williamson, who was the energetic secretary of the F.P. Rugby 2nd XV., and who has recently gone out to Australia to the Hawkesbury Agricultural College,.

Sydney; Alexander Morrice Mackay, M.A. (1882-91), who was Gold Medallist in 1891, and who is now a member of the Faculty of Advocates, Edinburgh.

William Wilson Jameson, M.A., M.B., Ch.B. (189219O2), who graduated in Medicine at Aberdeen University in April, has been appointed Resident Physician at the Prince of Wales General Hospital, London. He was, as many Old Boys have been before him, President of the Students' Representative Council at the University, and at the time of the quatercentenary celebrations took a large part in the organization of the students' portion of the programme. It may be mentioned that Sir James Reid, Bart. (1862-5), is one of the consulting physicians at the same hospital.

It was mentioned in the last Magazine that George Barclay, M.A., Edinburgh, was probably the oldest member of the Club, having been born in 182o, and attended the School from 1828 to 1833. Since the last issue, however, a still older " Boy" has joined the Club, namely, James Collie, advocate, of the firm of Messrs. James & George Collie, Aberdeen. He was born on 8th April, 1819, and attended the School from 1827 to 1832, three years under Robert Forbes and two years under Dr. Melvin. There is little doubt that Mr. Collie is the oldest surviving former pupil.

Louis Wilson, until recently photographer in Aberdeen, has taken up sugar-planting in Hawaii. His address is "c/o Paanhan Sugar Plantation Co., Paanhan, Hawaii, T.H., U.S.A." In a quiet way he took a very great interest in the School and the Club, and before he left he had done

much valuable work on the old registers of the School, and the result of his labours will be seen when the scheme for publishing the registers (referred to in another part of the Most of the splendid photoMagazine) is carried out. graphs which adorn our School walls were gifts from Mr. Wilson. . Charles Cooper (18i5-80), who is editor of the " Chester Courant," writes that he is delighted with the Handbook with the list of members of the Club, and reminds us that he suggested that the school years of members should be given in the Magazine. We are glad to have his confirmation that the Magazine is a" most creditable production."

George Croll (1882-7), who is one of the partners of the firm of Messrs. Harrison & Crossfield, Ltd., tea, rubber, and produce merchants in London, has become a member of the Club.

Rev. Thomas Murray, M.A. (1862-8), Presbyterian Chaplain to the Forces, who has been in South Africa for a number of years, expects to return to this country in the summer of this year. He is a brother of John Murray, M.A., of Messrs. Stewart & Murray, advocates, Aberdeen, who is a life member of the Club.

Douglas Watson, Norwich, has returned from the United States, and is now with the large firm of Messrs.

Howlett & White, boot and shoe manufacturers, Norwich.

His brother, Dr. W. A. Watson, is resident physician at the Norwich and Norfolk Hospital, Norwich. Andrew is on the staff of the great Norwich Insurance Company.

Robert S. Troup (1888-91), who was home on leave, has returned to his duties in the Imperial Forest Service, India, and is at present stationed at Dehra Dun, Punjab.

Professor Alexander Falconer Murison, M.A., LL.D. (1861-3), who was English master at the School from 1869 to 1877, has become a member of the Club.

Alfred Forbes Milne, M.A., A.R.C.M. (I895-I9oo), has recently been appointed music master at the Dundee High School.

He is also organist and choirmaster of St. John's U.F. Church, Dundee.

William Shepherd, who was tea-planting in Ceylon, has gone to Western Australia.

Herbert S. Milne, M.B., Ch.B., who graduated in Medicine at Aberdeen in April, has been appointed resident physician in one of the large Manchester hospitals, under Sir William Japp Sinclair, who was at the School in 1865.

Alfred J. Williamson, M.A., M.B., Ch.B., has been appointed resident surgeon in one of the Liverpool infirmaries.

John Inkster, M.B., Ch.B. (1902-4), has been appointed assistant surgeon at the Norwich and Norfolk Royal Infirmary. He graduated in Medicine in April.

Theodore Gray, M.B., Ch.B., has been appointed resident medical officer at Kingseat Asylum for another year.

A. M`K. Johnston (1898-1903) has returned from Canada after roughing it in the Lake Fruit Belt for almost six months. Although the work was hard, he enjoyed the experience very much. During the time he was away he ran across a large number of Old Boys, and has kindly given the Secretary of the Club much useful information concerning them.

Edward Legge, M.A., B.L., who went to Canada last spring, has received an important appointment with the firm of Messrs. Aylesworth, Wright, Moss, & Thomson, barristers, Toronto. He is a member of the Toronto Golf Club, which is the best club in Canada, and is at present training for the Canadian championship.

Legge was always versatile, and will, there is no doubt, be successful in Canada.

John D. MacDiarmid, M.A., B.L. (1889-93), and Alexander G. Nicol Smith are captain and lieutenant respectively of the local detachment of the Royal Army Service 'Corps.

John Taylor Simpson, solicitor, has received a legal appointment at Lochgilphead.

John Smith, of the firm of Messrs. Smith, Jameson, and Holmes, Aberdeen, has gone to Fleetwood, to manage the firm's business there.

Fred W. Galloway has been appointed superintendent in the Indian police, and is now resident at Ajmir, on the borders of Afghanistan. He met G. Stuart M'Combie a short time ago.

When Queen Alexandra was recently staying at Malta.. she sent by a special messenger a large signed photograph of herself, along with a kindly message, to Mrs. Wisely, the wife of Rev. Dr. Wisely. Dr. and Mrs. Wisely have won the respect and affection of the entire population by their benevolent career in the island of over half a century, and Dr. Wisely is known as " the grand old man of Malta."

John Brown was recently appointed a delegate to represent the Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce at the Conference of Chambers of Commerce in Australia. He is going to have a tour round the world.

James Michie, formerly of Insch, is owner of one of the finest stores in Toronto, and is major of the 48th Highlanders, of which our President's brother is colonel.

George E. Scroggie, who is in the Canadian Bank of Commerce at Windsor, Ontario, has, during the two years he has been in the service of the bank, received rapid' promotion.

L. Frank Merrylees, who recently went out to Canada, has obtained an appointment as a draughtsman with a large firm of engineers in Detroit, U.S.A. Although he is now in the States, he sometimes sees Old Boys who live across the river, in Canada. His brother, George Merrylees, is manager for the large firm of Debenham Canada, Ltd., silk mercers, Toronto.

Patrick Monro, who has been studying electrical engineering with the great Westinghouse firm, has gone to Buenos Aires to take up the practice of his profession.

Alexander Forbes (1845-9), who was a tariff reformer many years before Mr. Chamberlain, has recently written a book of some 100 pages, entitled, " Tariff Reform : A Plea for Fair Trade." He has received commendatory letters from several of his party leaders regarding the volume.

Clement M`Leod, M.B., Ch.B., has just gone out to' Alexandria to be assistant to Dr. A. A. Morrison (1871-3), who is a life member of the Club.

Douglas H. W. Williamson, M.A. (1894-1902), has, been licensed by the Royal College of Surgeons of England to practise dental surgery.

The death occurred in the middle of May of Hugh Mackenzie, late teller in the head office of the North of Scotland Bank. He was 74 years of age, and a member of the Club.

James George Gifford, who left the School in 1884, died at Portsmouth on 16th May. The Rev. Geo. Angus, priest of the Roman Catholic Church, St. Andrews, is dead. Father Angus was in the Fourth Class in 1856, and graduated at the University.

He entered the army as an ensign, but soon abandoned the army for the Church. He was ordained a minister of the Free Church of Scotland, but afterwards went over to Rome. He was a constant contributor to " Notes and Queries," and was looked on as an authority on liturgical and ecclesiological questions. His father was Town Clerk of Aberdeen, and several of his brothers rose to distinguished positions. We may have something to say of them in our next issue.

A letter, written from H.M. Consulate-General, Tientsin, has just been received from George Combe. He encloses subscription for himself and for his young brother, "who is in an out-of-the-way part of Saskatchewan, and probably not within easy reach of a place where they issue P.O.'s." The letter proceeds—" As you will see from the address, I have been posted to Tientsin, much to my joy, as the climate is excellent, and there is every facility for tennis, golf, and riding. I just missed Bob Keith at Singapore by three days. He had left for home. Met a man Scott [David Scott] at Colombo, who knew me at once after some fourteen years' interval, and had a long chat about the School and Aberdeen with Hynd in Hong-Kong. Quite a number of north-countrymen here."

Paragraphs have been appearing in the newspapers lately concerning a rumpus in the Orange River Colony over the dismissal, without cause shown, of three school inspectors. One of the three, William Fraser, M.A., is an Old Boy. He left the School about 1895.

C. E. Garland has been appointed Surveyor of Taxes at Leeds.

John Malcolm Bulloch has been appointed editor of the Graphic." ' A biography of Sir George King (1850-4), the great Indian botanist and Director of the Kew Botanical Gardens, has been written by his successor at Kew, also an Old Boy— Sir David Prain. A copy of it was sent with the author's compliments to the Rector.

Professor J. Wight Duff, Durham University, is issuing, a Literary History of Rome. He has been engaged on the work for the past three years.

The Rev. Dr. Alexander Whyte, who has been elected Principal of the New College, Edinburgh, was at the Grammar School for a short time. His portrait, with autograph, will soon be hung on the walls of our Hall.

C.B., M.D., M.A., Director-General of the Medical Department of the Navy, has been appointed Hon. Physician to His Majesty the King.

Many Old Boys must have felt regret at the death of Mr. William Brebner, who in the " eighties " undertook the teaching of French in the School. In 1887 he gifted his, salary as French master for the prizes in French and German which now bear his name.

Random Notes.

The chronometer which adorns the walls of Room I. has been suffering lately from its chronic complaint of failing to record the correct time. One day, as the mystic hour of twelve approached, a loud birr was heard, and the hands of the clock quivered. Before the cause of the sound was ascertained, there were many theories afloat.

Some said it was the School ghost, who, having mistaken his time by half a day, had in wrath stopped the clock ; at any rate, it had struck work for the day. Others philanthropically suggested that the sound was that of a slater falling off the roof. Whatever the cause, the timepiece disappeared, only to return after a general though necessary dust-up.

The Sixth are a very modest class. It was probably their modesty which prevented them from returning for a week after the Easter holidays were over, in consequence of which the Flag for Good Attendance was lost.

As the Sixth have carried off the banner many times already, they have only to make a graceful bow and retire into the background murmuring, " Such is fame." Ex-

Creme modesty was shown also by a certain member of the .class who professes to be able to accomplish something in the field of poetry. He forwarded to as a literary effusion •on a Roman historical subject, which we have finally decided not to publish for a few significant reasons. The poem is on tragic lines, yet, strange though it may appear, is written in an elegant lyric measure. We are of opinion, too, that the profoundness of the historical allusions and the depth and swing of the rhythm, along with a singular irregularity of rhyme, would be too much for our readers.

Our poet, then, must make his bow, and, for the present, bid farewell to fame.

Cricket is again with us, and the field resounds with the thud of bat on ball and the scarce less melodious sound that is heard when the ball finds its aerial career cut short by the interposition of the anatomy of some unsuspecting victim. We might almost say that in the big field the air is dark with balls, and yet, neglecting the commonplace though perhaps smarting bruise, we can say no one has been hurt. Before cricket was possible, grass seed had to be sown on the bare parts ; the seed has come up so ex•cellently that it is wellnigh impossible to go a yard without treading on grass. On the front patch of turf, the 1st XI. indulge in batting and bowling practice at the nets, where the batting is severely criticised by a "railing," mixed spectatorate of youthful ragamuffins and loiterers of • every sort.

While we speak of cricket, we may mention a few more facts, and give some much-needed advice. In the first place, we should like to inform the 1st XI. that it is possible to hit the ball with the bat, if the correct course is taken. Then we should advise every member of the XI. to bring a duck's egg with him when they go to be photographed, as it would be a most regrettable thing if so important a part of the team were to be found wanting.

A short while ago, the captains and secretaries of cricket were invited to meet in the cricket storeroom. In dismay, duly these warders of bat and ball marshalled themselves— a guilty row—but nol they had only to show up their keys, not go to the indignity of opening their lockers, alas ! too often deficient in their contents.

With the summer there has come to the school-gates not the proverbial swallow, but the more prosaic, less romantic vendor of ice-cream. The ice-cream dainties, - to which is given the appellation " sliders " (probably from

the rate at which they disappear), find a ready sale among the cricketers of the Lower School ; nay, more, far more, we have seen even some of the Upper School depositing the insignificant halfpenny to receive in exchange their money's worth of toothache. Therefore we can say that the School does not lack the proverbial bird of summer, as long as these delicacies, which are both cheap and questionable in quality, are being swallowed.

And now, gentle reader, we must bid you farewell before we leave the old School to wander forth into the world as we will. We shall miss the old familiar classrooms and the sounding corridor ; we shall miss the tolling of the bell, which in dull, kindly tones urged on the laggards : its song we shall never forget—" Sometimes be sharp, never be flat, always be natural." We shall miss the daily rush for possession of a bat or for the first kick of a football; we shall miss the eager crowd that thronged round the notice-board whenever any announcement was posted up : all these we shall miss. With these thoughts in your mind, reader, gentle as before, attribute our failure, if we have failed to amuse, to the tool and not to the workman ; for in private life we are not such as love to pass jokes or make others laugh—therefore, gentle reader, be lenient. We hope that the next to fill the post of official humorist will be one for whom the cap and bells are more befitting, one who can hear and understand a good joke, and who can also make one when he is so inclined. Therefore, farewell. Were we the poet disgusted with his own doggerel, or the small boy still more disgusted with his nicotine, our last words would be, "Vale, mea tibia."

Appreciations of the late Mr. Brownie.

I. The School reassembled after the Easter holidays in a spirit of jubilation. The members of the higher classes of the School had acquitted themselves so admirably in the University examinations that there was a general air of buoyancy abroad, and the last stage of the year's work was entered on with a pleasing alertness.

But the quarter was not a week old when our hearts were intensely saddened by the death, so tragic in its suddenness, of our valued and respected teacher and colleague Mr. Brownie.

In School on the opening day of the quarter, though somewhat unfit, yet even in his weakness so keenly and lovingly appreciative of the success of his former pupils at the recent examinations, he was, ere the week had passed, struck down in the prime of a vigorous manhood, and the School in which he had laboured so faithfully for eighteen years, with scarcely a day's absence, was left the poorer and sadder.

Perhaps my acquaintance with Mr. Brownie goes farther back than that of anyone in the Grammar School.

I first knew him as a favourite pupil of Dr. Dey in that institution known perhaps scarcely by name to the present generation of Secondary pupils as the "Barn."

Humble in its title, as it was humble in appearance and equipment when compared with modern Secondary institutions, it still had a humbler curriculum contrasted with present-day requirements, and yet it was able to nourish the best ideals of sound scholarship, and gather round it a worthy tradition. On its curriculum there was no room for Modern Languages. Mathematics was patronised to the extent of the First Book of Euclid, Arithmetic, and Algebra to Simple Equations. The main part of the curriculum consisted of Latin and Greek, especially of Latin Composition, and William Brownie, I remember, was one of the best at the " Version." Just at the time when he was a pupil at the " Barn," the mathematical part of the curriculum was slightly extended, and I had the privilege of giving Brownie some of his early lessons in Mathematics. He had no mean mathematical talent, as I had afterwards fuller opportunity of discovering.

He and I came to the Grammar School as colleagues on the same day. After school hours we frequently took rambles into the country. His interests were then divided between gardening and his school work. I still remember how, on the occasion of a School holiday, he invariably went to his father's country home near Fochabers, to tend his garden. He was a lover of flowers.

Frequently on these rambles we compared notes as to how things were progressing with us in School. I had thus the opportunity of judging how far my companion was interested in his pupils and in his work.

A hard worker himself, he believed in his pupils working. He would allow no scamping. He wrought a revolution in the classes that came under his control at that time.

He made his pupils work on intelligent principles. There Frequently I have was no scamping in his own work. gained inspiration from talking with Brownie on methods of teaching. Though he never took a part in our teachers' meetings, much to our loss, he was a keen educationist— not satisfied with merely putting in the day's work, but intensely eager to turn out good solid workmanship.

In his friendship he was loyal and sincere. Though outspoken in his opinions, he made few enemies. He had no narrowness : he had a breezy, sociable manner, and we shall never forget his hearty greetings. I have often remarked that I never knew one who could laugh so heartily as Brownie.

I have had the opportunity of reading several expressions of opinion which parents and pupils have made since his death on his work in the Grammar School. His work amongst us was highly appreciated, as these testimonials abundantly show.

A teacher affects his pupils not only by the spoken lesson, but by the inspiration and silent teaching of his own individuality and character. William Brownie was a thorough, genuine, honest worker. May we, each and all, work to deserve the same commendation.

II. After the shock of surprise and the flood of regret which followed when we learned of Mr. Brownie's death, I am sure there succeeded in the minds of most of those

who had been his pupils a great multitude of recollections of events that had happened in his classroom, a heap of impressions, then unconsciously formed, and long perhaps dormant, of his methods and personality as a teacher and as a man. A Former Pupil with scarcely more than seven years' standing has little right to become reminiscent.

He is much too young to be listened to with respect, because many of his readers' school memories last back far longer than his. He is too old, perhaps, to be read with much interest, because others who have left school more recently have better things to tell and fresher memories to report them than has he. In this case, his only excuse can be that it was his good luck (and here he perhaps had the advantage of his class-fellows) to see Mr. Brownie not only in the classroom but in the summer holidays (one did not then say " vac.") at his father's home in Fochabers, and once to meet him at dinner and to play whist with him, in Aberdeen. " Haec olim meminisse juvabit " • it will be pleasant, and it is pleasant, to remember these things.

Out of school, recollection concentrates itself in the memory of an afternoon in July near Fochabers, when, after a day spent in the town, I was walking to the Great North of Scotland Railway Station four miles away, and passed a house on the left, and saw in the garden in front of it his familiar figure. I dared greatly, opened the gate, and went in. For the next hour or so till I had to catch my train, I was treated hospitably and kindly by all who were there. I was shown the garden in which he was working, and the sight of him in this new setting gave that subtle kind of pleasure which most schoolboys feel, if they are not too sophisticated, when they meet their masters out of school. It was easy to see how he enjoyed the work, and revelled in all its details. Gardening was his hobby, I remember him once and particularly rose-gardening. saying that if he could afford it, he would spend all his salary in growing roses.

To turn within school, it must be set down how absolutely he excelled in his profession as a teacher. I am sure his colleagues, no less than the Rector and his governors, would be the first to concur in this. Every schoolboy who sat in the desks of his classroom by the time he left it was a living witness to the fact. It did not matter how stupid you were—and most of us (except a favoured few) were very stupid at some subject, and can now confess it without fear or shame—he never failed to make you take

something away out of what he was teaching you. There was, for instance, the dreadful and depressing study of the The second book of that author's works of Euclid. masterpiece contains a number of propositions with proofs which were very puzzling to one's mind at the first meeting. Mr. Brownie came along with a substitute in the shape of algebraical proofs, which were scarcely less so.

He was determined to make us understand, and he did.

The labour was no light one, and I remember close on six o'clock one evening (the " four o'clock rule" had been suspended, as they say in the House of Commons) a class of jaded and restless boys were being called out one by one to the blackboard to demonstrate in the horrible isolation of a space of floor the reasons which led that intelligent Greek mathematician to assume his results. All the while the master sat by, alert and with that twinkle of the eye which we all knew so well, explaining to a bitterly incredulous audience how admirable was the mental training they were then receiving. He was neither bored nor weary, nor, I really believe, wishful to get home. Like all great teachers, he enjoyed teaching, and when one nervous and ignorant pupil being commanded to draw the line AB produced a wavy and indefinite chalk mark on the blackboard, the only thing I remember him saying was, " We'll have no corrugated lines, George," while with a kind of sardonic patience he rubbed the feeble effort out and substituted a firm one of his own.

The pupil still remembers the proof of that proposition. On other subjects he was no less admirable. He initiated us into a knowledge of Greek, and he took care that when you read a Greek author you never forgot that you were reading an author and not merely the raw material for grammatical and syntactical study. He was deeply imbued with the humanist tradition in this, and his pupils carried away a distinct impression and appreciation of the matter and meaning of a book as a whole. I remember when we had read all through Euripides' " Alcestis," he made us read it again in the Greek, and translating, each doing a part in the play. I myself never attained to anything more distinguished than " Semi-Chorus I.," and this gave me plenty of time, like the original performers of my part, to observe the action. Possibly this may have given me a better chance than I should have otherwise had of remembering the details of the play. At any rate, though I have since read several other of Euripides' plays, and seen two on

`the stage, none remains more clearly in my mind than " Alcestis" after that reading under his direction eight years ago. I believe it was his habit in teaching English to do the same thing with the plays of Shakespeare which were set, though here I do not speak from experience.

The practice is only a small instance of his assiduous and sleepless endeavour to inculcate firmly and truly what he had to teach into the minds of his pupils. Before leavin g the subject of his teaching of the Classics, it is only proper to say that he was distinguished by the high quality and accuracy of his scholarship, which gained him a first class honours degree when he was at the University, and was maintained and increased during his career as a teaches afterwards. As a disciplinarian, he had a reputation, when I came first to the School, of sternness and severity, and though he kept perfect order—it was easy to see, partly by 'the recollection or report of what happened to the transgressor—I don't think I ever saw him take active measures.

Latterly, indeed, he could unbend, especially with a small class, as we sometimes were, and the thing became a kind of informal meeting rather than an hour of lessons, but he was always " feared by his name, and famous by his works," and no one ever attempted to go too far. In all the little things of teaching, no less than in the big, he displayed his aptitude and his knowledge ; he was the neatest man I ever saw at writing on a blackboard. It is not necessary -to say how rare a combination of qualities all this means.

Many men are as good scholars as he, and a few, perhaps, better equipped; some are as good disciplinarians, but seldom with so little display of force ; many (an increasing number owing to the exigencies of the Education Office) .are nearly as neat-handed,—but how many will you find who combine all three attributes at once? I fancy they ,are very few indeed; at any rate, I know that practically ever since I left the Grammar School I have been sampling the methods of teachers and lecturers, and have suffered and rejoiced under many men, but never have I met any who was a better teacher than Mr. Brownie.

Well, one could go on for hours writing down these -random memories, but there is no prolixity so dangerous as that which lingers over incidents of schooldays, and 't is time to make an end. These scattered notes will have :done enough and fulfilled all their intention if they are

the means of recalling to the minds of those who have similar recollections their own pictures of the teacher and of the man. The sudden and unlooked-for news of his. death caught many of us who were his pupils, as such things must do, when we were a long way from Aberdeen, and had no means of following his funeral, and so paying the due which piety to our School, as well as regard for the man, demanded from us. It is in the name of some of these who shared with me the privilege of being taught by him that I have ventured to write this poor and unavailing tribute of memory and respect.

An Appreciation.

Some time ago my former master—the energetic Mr. Charles Davidson—was kind enough to ask me to say something in the Aberdeen Grammar School Magazine about a voyage I had to Antarctica some years ago, but I could not bring myself to do it, as there was so much of greater interest being said by Captain Scott himself and others about the more important parts of the expedition.

But now that another " Old Boy " has taken such a prominent part in a more recent expedition, I gladly take the opportunity of saying something about the work of Lieut.

Shackleton and Lieut. Adams.

Although still quite a young man, Lieut. Shackleton has had a varied and interesting career, which for brilliance may well make one envious. Some ten years ago he was in the mercantile marine on a large passenger steamer: he was transferred in 1901 to the National Antarctic Expedition ship " Discovery" as a junior officer in charge of some of the physical observations. He proved the life and soul of the ship. He edited their paper, " The South Polar Times" ; he took part in the "Farthest South" journey with Capt. R. F. Scott and Dr. E. A. Wilson, the distinguished artist and zoologist of that expedition. He became ill on the return journey, and had to be sent home in 1903. He lectured in various parts of the country, he edited one of the popular magazines, he became Secretary to the Scottish Geographical Society, he was a candidate for Parliamentary honours, but, happily for geographical research, ne was unsuccessful. He assisted the well-known Arctic explorer, Admiral Pelham Aldrich, in July-August, 1903, in Dundee at the fitting out of the " Terra Nova," which was sent to the relief of the frozen-in " Discovery."

Next we find him organising and equipping the expedition at present under consideration, which was done by private enterprise.

He is now on his way home after having carried out splendid work in the Antarctic. He is accompanied by his right-hand man, Lieut. Adams, R.N.R., who, with Mr. Wild and Dr. Eric Marshall, made up the intrepid Southern party. Lieut. Adams is a former pupil of our School, and it is to be hoped that arrangements will be made for the present pupils of the School to hear either

Lieut. Shackleton or Lieut. Adams when they are lecturing in this part of the country. I am sure there is not one of us who would not be eager to hear from themselves their story of all they have come through.

It will be convenient to give here an outline of the Expedition's doings.

The "Nimrod," in tow of the "Koonya," left New Zealand on 1st January, 1908, with Lieut. Shackleton and his companions on board. She went south, and well to the east, so that she dodged the heavy pack-ice of Ross Sea. The iron hull of the " Koonya" not being suited to ice work, she was sent back to New Zealand, while the sturdy little wooden " Nimrod" held away south and made for the eastern end of the Great Ice Barrier, where Lieut.

Shackleton intended to land his party and establish his base.

A natural harbour in the Barrier face—seen by Capt. Scott in 1901-4, and named by him Balloon Bight— was found to have broken off from the Barrier, so that Shackleton could not land there, and the ice conditions were such that he could not land nearer King Edward the Seventh Land, which lies at the extreme eastern end of the Barrier. This land was seen by the pioneer Antarctic explorer, Sir James Clark Ross, in 1842, but, in deference to the opinion of several of his officers, who did not feel sure that it was land, he reluctantly consented to place on his chart at this point, " appearance of land." Capt. Scott, in the " Discovery," in 1901-2, was the next to see this land, and although he too was unable to set foot on it, and even failed, owing to the thick weather, to obtain good photographs of it, he (perhaps rather greedily) named the land after our present King. It is obvious, however, that the credit of the discovery belongs really to Ross, and it would have been much better to have associated with this land the name of the indefatigable Sir James.

Anyone will see, then, that Shackleton's plan was a good one, and likely to yield very valuable geographical results, but he was unable to land where he wished, and was obliged to retreat westwards along the edge of the wonderful Barrier for about 500 miles till he rounded Ross Island and entered 1\i'Murdo Sound, on the eastern shore of which, at Cape Royds, he made his base. It was at a point only 2O miles south of this place that the " Discovery" had so recently, and so unwillingly, spent two years, and the surrounding country was presumably already fully known.

To be forced to make one's base at a perfectly wellknown area in the Antarctic regions, where there are so many hundreds of thousands of square miles of territory upon which the foot of man has never trod, nor even the eye of man ever gazed, seemed a terrible punishment, and most people would have lost heart altogether at such a misfortune. However, does Shackleton give in? By no means. Apparently his motto is—" Mene incepto desistere victum! " When his historic and astounding cablegram reached this country, one was inclined to question its authenticity, so nearly superhuman were the achievements therein related, but before long surprise gave place to the most unbounded enthusiasm and admiration for the heroic work done by these brave and determined men in the face of such odds.

For years now it has been apparent that our country has lost all its pristine ambition to be the first to reach the coveted North Pole, so that it is all the more pleasing, even on that account alone, to find our own countrymen so magnificently transcending not only the great accomplishments of all previous Antarctic explorers, but even the more numerous and more cosmopolitan achievements of successive generations of Arctic travellers. The brilliance of Shackleton's results will ensure for him and his companions undying glory. There has never been any sledge work like theirs in the long and honourable annals of Polar exploration.

When we recollect the fact that Lieut. Shackleton was so seriously ill while a member of the "Farthest South" party —82° 17/ S.-from the " Discovery " in 1902-3, that he had to be invalided home in the relief ship " Morning," we must more than ever admire that indomitable pluck which led him to again face the almost incredible hardships and privations which are incidental to prolonged Antarctic sledging journeys. At the present time, when we hear so much about the increasing lassitude and indifference of the British nation, it is most refreshing to find that Shackleton and his companions have at once raised the standard of Polar work to such a height that it will be supremely difficult for any nation to equal it, and—one may be pardoned for saying it—there is probably no one now who is fit to eclipse that work but Lieut. Shackleton himself.

His southern party of four reached 88° 23' S. latitude g7 miles from the South Pole and 366 miles nearer it than had been reached by Scott, Wilson, and Shackleton in 1902.

I doubt not but that he will be quite eager and willing to go back again to wrest from the unknown more of those secrets which for so many thousands of years have been withheld from man, and it behoves us to extend to Lieut.

Shackleton, Lieut. Adams, and their companions such a welcome, when they reach this country, that they will know that as a nation we are proud of them, and that we have entire confidence in their powers to maintain, on any future expedition they may take part in to the southern regions, that very high level to which, by their historic work, they have raised British Polar research. Let us with no uncertain voice show that we have not yet given up all hope of abolishing from our maps and charts that most alluring but most reproachful word—" unexplored." Not in all the tales of gory battlefields and burning and sinking ships of war can we find such grandeur and nobility as in the stories of Hudson, Franklin, Kane, Nares and Markham, Nansen, Abruzzi, and Peary in the frozen North, and those of Ross, Scott, and Shackleton in the far South.

Who amongst us has not been stirred by reading accounts of Franklin or some of the relief expeditions sent out after him? Many men have told me that they have never forgotten, even late in life, those stimulating tales of travel and exploration under the Polar Star.

It is good for us to ruminate on the brilliant achievements of previous Polar voyagers, some of whom are no longer with us, but, at the same time, we must not be oblivious of the presence in our midst to-day of men who are making history under our very eyes. It is true that nowadays we are ever so much better equipped both in the matter of food and clothing and in the methods of locomotion best suited to Polar work, but we must not lose sight of the fact that Shackleton's successes are due but little to these factors, while to the determined courage of himself and his companions, to their ceaseless energy, to their fertility of resource, and, above all, to the magnificence of the entire organisation of the campaign, a far greater share of the credit must be given. Indeed, it is pretty certain that the organisation of the main work of this expedition will remain for many years to come as a splendid example of what can be done by close personal attention to the minutest details of any exploring venture.

The enterprise which Shackleton displayed in being the first to utilise Manchurian ponies and a motor-car in an Antarctic expedition is highly characteristic of the man.

When the news first came, some people rushed to the conclusion that the marvellous results were due entirely to the motor-car, and were, on that account, to be thought the less of, but we know that the car was used only for short trips in the neighbourhood of the base—e.g., the transference of some stores across the sea-ice to the first depot, at Hut Point, about 20 miles south of Cape Royds. Even the ponies that took part in the southern journey were but four to begin with—a number which was soon enough reduced, partly intentionally to form supplies of food for the return trip, and partly accidentally by one's falling down a crevasse and nearly carrying Adams with him, so that we should note that the entire homeward journey was perThe formed without the assistance of ponies at all. ponies were no doubt helpful in dragging the sledges along, but at no time did they carry any of the party on their backs, so that the entire distance of 1,708 miles— the longest sledge journey in the world's history—had to This party be traversed on foot by the dauntless four. was absent from its base for a period of 126 days, during which time they were subsisting (for it can hardly be called living) on a very greatly reduced diet of pony meat, biscuits, pemmican, and cocoa, which at one stage was as low as zo oz. of food per man daily, much less than And all this many a schoolboy takes between meals! while the cold is most intense, where sleep is shallow and disturbed by dreams of glorious repasts which contrast so horribly with the present starvation diet. Imagine—or, rather, try to imagine—what it is like never to have one's clothes off, day or night (such night as the midnight sun allows), for four solid months, never to know the luxury of soap and water, nor the comfort of bed other than that afforded by a reindeer or woollen sleeping-bag laid upon the ice, four able-bodied men being huddled up together for mutual warmth in a thin silken or duck tent where turning is impossible! All this in an unknown and treacherous country, where a false step or a false astronomical observation will almost certainly mean either the instant destruction of the party by falling down a crevasse or the more ghastly, lingering extermination by missing the depot, which, in such absolutely barren country, devoid of animal life, is the only means of escaping death by starvation.

Think of the courage of the leader of such a band and of the confidence in him displayed by his companions.

But in considering the work of this expedition, we

must not allow the magnitude of the southern journey to dwarf the other exploits. An undertaking of peculiar interest to one who has been there was the daring ascent of the most southerly active volcano known. Here neither motor-car nor ponies took any part, but the men themselves, toiling up so far with their heavy sledges, then carrying their equipment on their backs, till they reached the summit of majestic Erebus, over 13,000 feet high (three times the height of Ben Nevis), completely snowclad, yet constantly belching forth smoke and steam— truly one of the grandest spectacles in the wide Antarctic.

What one would have given to have been on the edge of the 8oo-feet deep crater, and have swept the vast horizon away north to Ross Sea, laden with shimmering pack-ice ; away west across M`Murdo Sound to the stately range of the Western Hills, with so many lofty peaks and so many mighty glaciers showing up in the beautiful sunshine like vast sheets of burnished silver ; then away to the east over the boundless expanse of the Great Ice Barrier, whose snowy surface is unbroken by any land within sight ; and then to have peered from that dizzy height away to the south, with the Western Hills continued as far as the eye can reach, in the direction of that hitherto inaccessible, but now increasingly enticing, South Pole!

The panorama of views taken from the summit of Mount Erebus will be of absorbing interest, as this mountain is a very dominating one, and has never before been ascended for more than about a thousand feet.

Nor does this exhaust even the sledging enterprises of this memorable expedition, for we have yet to recount the less sensational, yet none the less arduous, journey to the region of the South Magnetic Pole, which was taking place at the same time as the great southern journey. The Magnetic Pole party encountered very rough " going " over the sea-ice, and then up some very stiff glaciers to reach the remarkable inland plateau at a height of 7,000 feet.

They reached the Pole, which, of course, is very far away form the geographical South Pole. They were thus the first to actually visit this spot, although the North Magnetic Pole had been discovered by Ross in 1831.

This party was working under very adverse conditions, and was rescued in a rather remarkable manner by the ship after being away for 122 days, during which time they did altogether 1,260 miles. Special credit is due to the members of this party, because none of them had had any previous

experience of Antarctic long-distance sledge-travelling, and Captain Evans, of the " Nimrod," is to be highly congratulated for the skill he showed in locating the party on such a long stretch of difficult coast-line, and for his celerity in getting them aboard.

The entire absence of casualties is most remarkable, and all but unique.

Amongst the most valuable results of the expedition is the finding of coal measures in limestone. It is to be hoped that this observation will be confirmed by the experts at home, as it affords definite evidence that the Antarctic regions were at one time very much warmer than they are now. No such conclusive evidence from this part of the Antarctic existed before, for the " fossil " got by the " Discovery's" people did not satisfy the geological authorities at home.

Other results are the obtaining of innumerable photographs and sketches and paintings of new mountains, new ranges of mountains, new glaciers, continuous records of the special instruments for studying the weather, more especially the barometer, also repeated observations of the magnetic phenomena, both of which are so important for the safe navigation of the more temperate southern seas.

Animals and plants, such as they are, have been specially studied, and collections have been made which will afford work for the scientists at home. We now know, too, more about the state of the land and ice round the South Pole, as well as about the weather conditions there.

The coast-line of Victoria Land has been carried farther south by some hundreds of miles, and more light than ever has been shed on the nature of the Great Ice Barrier, which for so many years has been the most interesting ice problem of the world. It is now almost certain that Ross Sea is a large bay in the Antarctic Continent, and that the Barrier is not a vast Polar ice-cap but is an accumulation of ice which has been formed in this bay by the many glaciers which pour into it from the immense plateau at an altitude of about I0,000 feet. Shackleton has ascended these very glaciers, and has traversed a large area of this remarkable plateau.

Further, it would look as if the long mountain chain of Victoria Land were continuous right across the Polar area, either with Coats' Land or with Graham's Land. It remains for Dr. Bruce, in his 1911 expedition, to penetrate from his own Coats' Land as far as possible in the direction of the South Pole that he may confirm this hypothesis.

Much still remains to be done even in that part of the Antarctic opposite Ross Sea, more especially at the eastern end of the Barrier. King Edward the Seventh Land requires to be fully explored, and a party will require to penetrate as far south as possible in order to and whether this land is an island or is the eastern shore of the great bay already referred to. More pioneer work remains to be done to the east of King Edward Land.

Altogether, although we cannot but admire more and more the brilliant achievements of Lieut. Shackleton and his companions (and we can rest assured that posterity will award full credit to them), we must remember that there is much yet to be known, and we must pledge ourselves to support, by every means in our power, any fresh expedition which Shackleton may take in hand. He has shown himself to be a most capable and industrious explorer—the right man in the right place—and if this country has any ambition to further our knowledge of these parts, it will be our pleasant duty to send him back, fully equipped with ship, men, and money, that he may add fresh discoveries to those with which, so long as time itself shall last, his name shall be so honourably associated.

Mainly about Pedagogues.

Nowadays, when discussions and arguments on education play such an important part in our social life, it may not be uninteresting to discuss, in a rambling fashion pedagogues in general and Northern pedagogues in particular. There is no need in the case of this subject to start with a definition, and so we plunge into the midst of our discourse at once.

Pedagogues are of all sorts, shapes, conditions, and sizes, from the boy who temporarily establishes a ferociou.. tyranny over his fellows sitting in a row on the top of a dyke, and submitting with a bad grace to the frequent castigations which he thinks fit to administer " wi' the strap o' an aul' britchin," to the sage who dispenses wisdom with a lavish hand from the erudite dignity of his professorial chair to a more or less interested audience. We shall consider some of the intermediate types.

The first of surpassing interest is the old-fashioned dame, who, having by native ability or good fortune obtained a few scraps of knowledge above her fellows, earned her daily bread by teaching the children of the village in which she lived. These teachers were extremely plentiful all over the North of Scotland some fifty or a hundred years ago, but, like many another good old institution that has served its day and generation well, they are now nearly extinct. These ladies were mainly drawn from the better classes of the community. They were themselves the daughters of clergymen, schoolmasters, bankers, farmers, etc., who, having little to bequeath to their progeny save gentility of birth and manner, a good, sturdy upbringing,. a careful training in healthy ideals, and a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures, left them perforce to fend for themselves, and the office of private schoolmistress was a natural one for them to adopt. They might belong to the village in which they taught, but it added no small dignity —not to mention a spice of mystery—to them in the eyes of the community in which their lot was cast " gin they cam' fae twenty mile up thro'." The premises in which they taught would not have satisfied the stringent requirements of a Code of the present day. The addition of a. few stools, " sklates, an' skalee " to the ordinary furniture of a kitchen completed their educational equipment, and there the good lady sat in her ingle-neuk, arrayed in all the imposing• dignity of spectacles and a "prudence."

Grasping the Proverbs of Solomon in one hand and a " spurtle " in the other, she divided her attention between the inculcation of the great truths therein set forth and the manufacture of broth, which "hotter't" briskly in a pot suspended from the " swye " above her open hearthfire, mindful at once of the mental and moral needs of those under her charge and of her own creature requirements. Of course, the quality of the instruction given by these schoolmistresses was as varied as their own characters and qualifications. Thus, one in Aberdeenshire explained to her class when, in the course of their reading, they came across Ramoth-Gilead, that " it wis a muckle toon i' the Sooth. I've seen't, bit ye niver wull " ; and such. information may raise a smile to us of the present day, but let us not forget that these ladies had received no manner of instruction whatsoever in methods of teaching. Infant psychology they had never heard of. But they had strong characters, and they had had themselves to do battle with

the world, and they knew what life was, though they themselves had spent it in a narrow province. The result was that their teaching was spontaneous and vigorous, as any Furthermore, they who experienced it will soon aver. were imbued with a spirit of unconquerable healthy optimism, which infected their pupils, and, last and most important of all, they instilled the rudiments of learning, at a cheap rate, into many a man and woman who, but for them, would never have had the opportunity to acquire the arts of reading and writing.

Passing now from these old-world pedagogues, let us consider one of the most important, and least appreciated, of our national institutions, namely, the Scotch parish schoolmaster. Unlike the town teacher, who can forgather with those of a like craft whenever he so desires, the rural schoolmaster pursues rather a lonely course.

First, and foremost, he lives in the midst of a community which is an industrial one, and which, therefore, cannot enter fully into and appreciate his work and difficulties.

What the exact attitude of the agriculturist towards education is, it would baffle an Aristotle to determine. His fundamental dogma is—" A kenna fat the wardle's comin' tull wi' a' this eddycation that's turnin' folk's heids," while some of the more advanced confidently assert that " it wis better wardles fin folk vrocht wi' their han's an' hidna a' this eddycation." The views of another tiller of the soil on the subject of the Higher Education of Women can be fairly accurately gauged, though not explicitly stated, in the following pronouncement. He had come from Girseystibbles on a Friday for the combined purpose of visiting the cattle sales and seeing his son, who was attending The son, filled with lofty ideals Aberdeen University. and fired with all the enthusiasm of youth, pointed out to his father a red-gowned virgin of by no means attenuated proportions, who was pursuing her way, laden with notebooks, up the crowded street, and described at some length the great intellectual triumphs which she was likely to achieve. The father surveyed her carefully as she moved, and then when his son had concluded his glowing eulogy emphatically declared—" A gweed kitchie 'umman connacht." Yet again, the subjoined conversation was heard when the short courses for young farmers were instituted at Aberdeen University : — Miller—" Yod, Mains, ha'e ye h'ard that they're yokin' tee wi' agricultural classes in the College at Aiberdeen for wir young f airmers ? "

Now, the extraordinary and most perplexing part of the whole situation is that, though this be the professed creed of the agriculturists in reference to education, they far exceed any other class in the number of the sons and daughters that are yearly despatched to fill the University ranks. Still, the fact remains that such is the atmosphere in which the country pedagogue pursues his calling. He is generally regarded as being overpaid and having too little to do. But is there another class of workman in the whole fabric of Society from whom Society expects such To begin a variety of multifarious accomplishments? with, the country schoolmaster is often ruling elder in the Parish Kirk, precentor or organist at its services, and registrar of births, marriages, and deaths. In his professional •duties, he must have a good knowledge of Latin and French, mathematics and natural history, English literature, and physical drill, whilst his equipment is incomplete without some skill in the aesthetic arts of singing and drawing. Outside his school routine, he is often president of the local mutual improvement society, secretary for the whist club, and sometimes, too, gives lectures to the surrounding inhabitants on land-surveying, drainage, and sanitation. Last, but not least, he it is who is looked to to organise a picnic or a cantata, and he must not fail with his speech or song at a village concert. It may safely be said that no other kind of pedagogue can exercise such a powerful influence on the people among whom he labours as the Scotch parish schoolmaster, and no other kind of teacher can, at the same time, help or hinder to such a vital extent the career of any promising pupil that may happen to come under his charge. Hitherto, the community at large has been slow to recognise the value of the work which they do, but they are beginning to realise it, and to understand the important position which the rural teacher occupies in the social fabric.

Apart from the contemplation of these particular types of pedagogues comes the study of comparative pedagogy.

I have not come across, to any large extent, any type of schoolmaster in England except the type produced by the public schools, and so must confine myself to contrasting them with the teacher we are accustomed to in the second-

ary schools of Scotland. The first thing that strikes the Caledonian on entering a public school is that the English pedagogue belongs to no parish, and possesses no county.

John Burns, M.A., is, and never ceases to be, wheresoever his lot may be cast and in whatsoever country he may wander, one of the Burnses o' Barmybannocks, and, in the. end, he never fails to convince an uninterested and irresponsive world of the fact. But the English pedagogue. might come from Devonshire, Cumberland, or East Anglia,. and only an expert could from observation determine which. He himself may be known to you for years before. he ever mentions the province of his birth, and, if he does, happen to do so at all, it is merely by the way. This is. easy enough to account for on general grounds. Apart from the strong local feeling so characteristic of the Scot and rarely to be found amongst the Southron, save, perhaps, among those hailing from Yorkshire and the more northerly parts, the public school master is generally the• son of well-to-do parents, who can afford to send him away from home to school at a very tender age, precisely at that time of life when local characteristics and provincial traits are most likely to be developed. Furthermore, most of them travel about in the long vacations enjoyed by the public schools, and so they become citizens of the world,. and not residents of a parish. The Scotch pedagogue, on the other hand, is born and lives the first fifteen or sixteen years in his native parish, and is rarely out of it, while travel he knows not till he has finished his University course and can pay for it himself. Thus, by the time he islaunched out into the world, his provincial character and' strongly marked local prejudices are fully developed. He is a Banffshire man, or a Fifer, or a callant frae the Lothians to the end of the chapter. Another result of the roving and unsettled mode of life pursued by the English schoolmaster is that he is not nearly of such a domesticated temperament as his Scottish counterpart, and in very many cases elects to spend his life in single-blessedness, whereas to the Caledonian preceptor it is usually a most cherished hope that he shall have it recorded on his tombstone that he was " a fond husband and an affectionate father. Requiescat in pace."

One might go on descanting for any length of time about pedagogues and pedagogy. For example, one might moralize on the fact that the days have gone when the Rector of the Grammar School taught in a wig, and'

when every professor bore a surtout coat and a goldheaded cane. The times are changing, and the pedagogues must change with them.

I conclude with one or two anecdotes that have happened to myself since coming to Clifton College. Besides the higher mathematical work in the school, I have one set of very small boys in the Junior school of ages ranging from 1o to 13. The Junior school is entered at some distance from the Senior school, and as the boys enjoy a short break in the open air between the periods of instruction, they usually run to meet the next master, and hail him with all sorts of acclamations. I have heard a variety of salutations, but was absolutely unprepared for -one I got at the beginning of last term : " Good morning, Sir. Cia mar tha sibh." On enquiry, I found that this little boy was in the way of spending his summer holidays in the Highlands, where he had picked up the most oftrecurring Gaelic salutations, a repetition of which, he thought, could not fail to gladden the heart of a Northerner. His attempt at " Oipe va" for " Oidhche mhath" (good-night) was not quite so successful. The master is also greeted with offers of all sorts of confections which have been bought at the " grub shop," and 'devoured in the interval. If he has any respect for his own health, he will steadily refuse all such offers, as to take from one and not from another would be sure to cause pain. One day a small fellow came running to meet me with a face of unutterable glee. " Now, Sir," he said, '" you must take some of this." He felt certain that, though I had been deaf to all entreaties to partake of -other dainties, my patriotic instincts would overcome my discretion. It was a packet of Edinburgh rock. Lastly, a geography lesson sometimes precedes my lesson in mathematics. Before the minute when my lesson is timed to start, they frequently crowd round the table while I am taking down the map, and ask questions about it, particularly if it be the north-east corner of Scotland. My unofficial instructions in this brief interval had evidently -borne more abundant fruit than I had bargained for, for one little fellow came running to meet me one day, and -exclaimed—" Please, Sir, we got a map to draw of the rivers of Scotland, and I put in the Ugie first of all."

Our Letter= Box. A Chinese Wedding.

The following account is an extract from the letter of an Old Boy now resident in Penang :— " I was at Kheng Bock's wedding on Wednesday night —or, rather, at a bit of it, as a Chinese wedding lasts a fortnight. I arrived at the house about 8.15 p.m., and immediately the trumpets blew and the cymbals clashed. I was ushered into a room, and there were two other His father enterEuropeans there and Kheng Bock. tained the Chinese guests in another room. There were over fifty courses for dinner, and I heroically tried about thirty of them. Some were really awfully good, others were rather queer, but I ate a tremendous lot, and drank one bottle of beer. .Then Kheng Bock retired, and presently returned in mandarin costume, gold slippers, green silk stockings, blue silk trousers, a huge pelisse of crimson-looking brocaded silk, a silk cap with coloured buttons, and the whole completed by four diamond rings,. with stones like marbles. We then proceeded to the door, where a rubber-tyred victoria, with two horses, awaited us. There were, of course, two syces, or runners, and on either step a crimson-garbed attendant with marriage lanterns, and, behind, another gorgeous functionary with a halberd with plenty of gilt about it. We presently arrived at the bride's house, and were ushered into a beautiful room, and there she stood crowned with a huge gold crown, with spangle sort of things which served as a veil.

I could not describe her raiment: it was altogether too gorgeous ; and her jewellery must have weighed nearly a stone (her father is very rich). There was a gilt chair, and I was placed in this, and introduced by her husband.

She never glanced at me—that would be contrary to etiThen a quette—so I salaamed and wished her luck. dowager poured out tea in a real gold cup, and handed it, on a gold salver, to the bride, who presented it to me.

I drank the tea, and the other men were then introduced.

Then we had to try to make the bride smile for luck..

I managed it by getting a man to teach me some Chinese words (she knew no English), and when I spouted them out valiantly she gave a glimmer of a smile, which was hailed with rapture by the crowd of Chinese about. Then

I sat again in the state chair, and a little brandy was handed to me in the same fashion as the tea was, after which we shook hands and then went away home. I fear I am giving a tame account of a most picturesque ceremony, but there was such a wealth of detail and formality that I could not do justice to it on mail day. Kheng Bock has done well for himself. He will now live with his wife's father, who will keep them both for the rest of their days."

John Craig (1865-6), joint general manager of William Deacon's Bank, Limited, Manchester, in a letter recently written to the Secretary of the Club, says :— " I think that in inviting Former Pupils to give an account of their career, you have had quite a happy thought. Amongst the many adventurous young Scots. who have passed through the School, there must be a goodly number an account of whose doings would make excellent " copy " for the Magazine, and be a stimulus and encouragement to the lads who have not yet begun their career.

"But as regards myself, I am in the position of Canning's organ-grinder. I have no story to tell. To everyone, except my own people and myself, my life has been a hopelessly humdrum everyday affair. A dozen years of Scotch banking (in the good old North Bank) and thirty years of English make up my career since I left the Fourth Class of the School. " I am sorry I have lost touch, and even sight, of most of my schoolmates. There are a few of whom I hear occasionally through public or private channels—Sir William MacGregor, for instance, and my old crony, Dr. George Ferries. But I fear many are passed away.

"At any rate, all the old masters are goneBarrack, most capable, courteous, and dignified of principals ; Still, my own class master, whom I hold in kindly remembrance ; Legge, most charming and lovable of men; Beverley, Gray, and the others. Indeed, their pupils are already getting pretty well on in years. If any of them still frequent the streets of Aberdeen, years have disguised them.

'beyond all recognition by me. A week ago I traversed Union Street and several side streets during a couple of •days, and I did not recognise a single soul, where, forty years ago, I knew—by sight at any rate—almost everybody. I grow garrulous, but the responsibility lies with yourself. " Wishing every success to the old School and to the tClub,—Yours, etc."

Byron's Name Carved on School Desk.

There is a legend that in the old building in Schoolhill -there was a desk with the name Byron carved on it by the poet himself. It is difficult now to meet anyone who has seen the name, but the veteran Dr. Gordon Stables writes on the point as follows :— " My Dear Sir,—Your interesting letter to hand.

I suppose I am one of the oldest Grammar School boys still afloat, though Dr. Fraser is two or three years my senior.

However, I can date back to the vintage of 184o. But I don't feel old, except when ill—then I am about 98. In re Byron. Yes, it was in the fourth or fifth faction from the bottom. I liked to be down there, because we were all clever, and I edited a paper. The " sine errore " men were prigs, and I don't think any of them ever rose to anything.

The " Byron " was printed or cut in large caps., and as boys are handy with their knives, I rather think it must have been picked out, leaving only the blank space. Anything about the old School I should be happy to enlighten you on.

With the return of spring, the whole School devotes itself strenuously to cricket practice.

The members of the Upper School, freed from the strain and anxiety of the March examinations, contend keenly for places in the 1st XI., so keenly, indeed, that selection is very difficult.

Only three members of last year's XI. have returned, thus leaving eight vacant places to be filled at the discretion of J. Ritchie (Captain) and D. C. Duncan (Secretary.)

May z, z9o9.—With but two days' practice, the School 1st XI. turned out for their first match of the season— with 2nd Cults at Allan Park. The whole eleven arrived promptly—two days too soon, indeed, for Cults believed the match to be on Monday. They speedily collected an eleven, however, and went in to face the bowling of Ritchie and Johnstone. Play was somewhat slow, but at length Cults were all out for 43. Skene, with an almost faultless 24, headed their score. Ritchie had five wickets to his credit, Lawrence and Hastings two each, and Johnstone one. The School bowling was steady, its fielding keen, and its wicket-keeping excellent. The School innings was bright, and a total of 72 for eight wickets was soon amassed. Lawrence, with 23 not out, was highest scorer, and Duncan followed with a well-played 12. Cults were inferior to the School both in bowling and fielding.

The return fixture was played on Monday, the 3rd May. Cults had an exceedingly strong second team, in-

cluding some from their first, while the School was without Ritchie, Diack, Sorley, Johnstone, and Watson, and had to recruit from the spectators.

Batting for the School, Lawrence compiled a faultless 24, gained by attractive cricket ; but the School innings closed for 43.

Before Cults went in to bat, they generously entertained theeleven to tea in the pavilion, and, refreshed thus, the School went out to field. Presently, three Cults wickets. fell to Lawrence in rapid succession, and then four to 0. Gray.

Cults' score was now 35, and their eighth wicket fell with C. M. Geering, run out. Proctor got the ninth, but a last-wicket stand seemed probable. With the. score at 41, Milne smartly stumped the Cults player whoattempted the winning hit, and thus ended the second match and victory over 2nd Cults.

Proctor deserves special credit for two brilliant catches, particularly a onehanded catch high up in the slips. We desire here to record our hearty appreciation of Cults' generous hospitality..

May 7, 1909.—On this date the School 1st XI. played their annual match at King's College with 'Varsity Wanderers. The Wanderers had a splendid team, including Brander, Gibbon, and Robson from 1st 'Varsity, while the School were in full strength. The Wanderers had five wickets down for 32, but Pearson and Brander in partner. ship carried the score to 82, Pearson obtaining 39 and Brander 24. Their innings closed for 85. Sorley, with four wickets, was the best bowler for the School.

With some hopes of at least a draw, the School started batting against the bowling of Gibbon and Gillies.

Gibbon's bowling—its speed would have done credit to a county match—aided by the failing light, completely beat the batsmen.

He performed the "hat trick," and his analysis of seven wickets for 6 runs bears witness to the deadliness of his bowling.

Gillies got the remaining wickets. The School total was 21, of which Watson had' 5. Both the wicket-keepers, Milne and Robson, had neat catches behind the wickets.

May 8, 1909.—Eager to maintain last year's record, the School XI. turned out, in beautiful, sunny weather, for the first match with Gordon's College. On winning the toss, Gordon's sent in Ewen and Booth to face Sorley and Johnstone. Sorley got a wicket with his third ball, and thereafter scoring proceeded very slowly up to 16 for five wickets. Here Ritchie and Lawrence came on to bowl,

and, afterwards, Diack and Hastings. When the seventh• wicket fell the score stood at 47, to which Marr had contributed 14 and M`Keggie 7. Sorley and Johnstone obtained the remaining wickets without increase in the score.

Johnstone, with four wickets for 7, and Sorley, with fourfor II, gained most of the bowling honours. Milne kept wicket with his usual success. The School fielding was rather slack, due, probably, to the heat. Proctor had a good catch low down in the slips. The School batting was marked by that nervousness which so often is the sole cause of disaster in its matches with Gordon's College.

In rapid succession, those in whom reliance had been placed failed. Sorley alone, by a splendidly played i8, including a four and two threes, partially redeemed the School's reputation. That the innings closed for 35 was due, in great measure, to the keenness of the College fielding.

May 15, 19o9.—The eleven travelled to Kintore to play Kintore " A " in bright but cold weather. Ritchie lost the toss, and Kintore went in to bat. Scoring proceeded rapidly till the fall of the seventh wicket at 55, but the total reached 58 only. Sorley, with three wickets for 9, and Lawrence, with two for 2, were the most successful School bowlers. The fielding was very good indeed-a pleasing contrast to that in the preceding match. Watson merits special praise for three splendid, opportune catches.

The School batting displayed the same disappointing characteristics as previously. Very few settled down to play steadily, but nervously vacillated between caution and recklessness, with disastrous results. 0. Gray, who quickly compiled a welcome and well-played io, was top scorer the next was Ritchie, with a careful 6. The score was 37, 21 short of Kintore's total. The fact that Kintore " A" was assisted by two good men from 1st Kintore, coupled with the School's lack of confidence in batting, probably accounted for this defeat.

On the evening of the 2 1 st May, the School played King's Gate C.C. at Walker Park. The School batted first, but could make no stand against G. A. Munro, whose deliveries were most skilfully varied, both in pace and length. Duncan, with 8, was top scorer, and Sorley had a carefully played 6. G. A. Munro had six wickets for 8 runs. Confident of surpassing the School total of 22, King's Gate went in to bat. They did so with six wickets in hand, but were all out for 45, thanks mainly to

the excellence of the School bowling and fielding. W. Bannochie, with 17, played best for King's Gate. John stone, with six wickets for 27 runs, was the best bowler for the School. The result of this match, though a defeat, was quite creditable for the School, as King's Gate, with a weaker team, had vanquished our last year's XI. more •completely.

May 22, 1909.—On this date the XI. paid their annual visit to Ellon to play Ellon Gordon C.C. The weather was dry and warm, and the pitch in admirable condition for run-getting. The following are the detailed scores : — ELLON GORDON.

Four School wickets down for 21 seemed to promise a fairly large total, but the remaining batsmen, except Ritchie, who made a useful 7 by a fine forcing game, failed to follow the example of Lawrence, Diack, and Sorley. The Ellon bowling and fielding was good, and the wicket-keeping excellent. After some light refreshment, kindly provided by the home club, the School took the field. H. J. Milne, whose reputation still lives in the annals of School sport, gave a faultless exhibition of judicious and accurate play.

Johnstone, who had five wickets for 30 runs, bowled splendidly, and only the fact that he continued bowling when very fatigued prevented his analysis from being 3 runs per wicket instead of 6.

Lawrence had three wickets for 12, and Duncan two for 25. The School fielding was not up to its usual standard, the result, probably, of nervousness and lack of experience.

It would greatly benefit both the School batting and fielding if more practice games were played.

The Annual Meeting of the Club was held in the' Library of the School on the evening of Monday, 26th April. There was a fair attendance of members present, and Mr. A. G. Nicol Smith, the Vice-President of the Club,. was unanimously elected Chairman of the meeting.

After the Secretary had read the notice calling the. meeting, and the Minute of the last Annual Meeting had been read and approved of, the Chairman explained that the Executive recommended that the funds of the Club should be invested in 4 per cent. debentures of the Scottish.

Northern Investment Trust, Limited. He mentioned that the funds were the total amount of all life members' subscriptions received, and said that it was very satisfactory that the Club was able to earmark these subscriptions as. capital, and that all new life members could rest assured that their subscriptions would not be used for ordinary expenditure purposes. On the motion of Mr. E. W. Watt, seconded by Mr. Talbert Helmrich, the recommendation of the Executive was unanimously adopted.

The Chairman then called upon the Hon. Secretary and' Treasurer to submit the Executive's Report for the yearending 15th April, i9o9.

Apart from the social functions, the two most outstanding features of the year were the publication of a Handbook, giving the names and addresses of the members, along with the rules of the Club, and the formation •of the London Section of the Club.

The Handbook, which has led to the correction of errors in designations and addresses, and has been a source of new information about Old Boys, has been greatly appreciated, whilst the London Section has already almost 5o members, and, under the enthusiastic guidance of the Hon. Secretary, Mr. T. J. Wilson, C.A., Laurelbank House, Hurlingham, London, its success is assured. The Executive have no doubt that in time this Section will be a very strong branch of the Club, and any member who wishes notices concerning it should inform Mr. Wilson.

Of the social functions, the Annual Dinner, at which Mr. Pope, the esteemed art and writing master of the .School, was present as guest, was most successful, and the Annual Ball, which was held in the Music Hall on 28th December, was not only exceedingly well attended, but was, without doubt, the most enjoyable and successful • dance ever held under the auspices of the Club.

The dramatic entertainment given by the Dramatic Section was, for various reasons, not so well patronised by the public as in previous years, but the same excellent standard of acting was maintained by the members of the Section as on previous occasions, and a substantial donation has again been handed over to the funds of the Club.

The Annual Concert was fairly well attended by the general public, but it seems a great pity that when such an excellent concert is arranged more of the Old Boys are not present in person.

The discussion on "What Form of Exercise is Most Beneficial? " was exceedingly well attended, and the evening was in every way a success, but the lecture which Mr. Mackilligan so kindly gave on " A Journalist's Rambles in Town and Country' was poorly attended, although those who were present enjoyed it thoroughly.

The Dance Committee, in view of the lateness of the season, and on account of the Rugby Football Club having held a Cinderella at the end of February, decided to cancel the Cinderella fixed for 5th March. They also agreed that •

in future the Club should give an Annual Ball, and that the entire arrangements for the Cinderella should be made by the Football Section, on condition that all members of the Club be allowed to attend, and that the Section accept full financial responsibility.

The Football Section, although it has not been so successful as in previous years, has had, on the whole, a good season. It is, however, greatly handicapped as regards ground for playing matches.

The Orchestral Section, which met on Saturday evenings throughout the winter, has had a successful and enjoyable season. It has worked away quietly, and having now surmounted the initial difficulties of forming an orchestra, it hopes to be in a position to give a good account of itself next season. This Section again cooperated with the Dramatic Section, and also contributed to the programme at the Annual Concert. Any Old Boys who are musically inclined will be heartily welcomed as members, and should communicate with Mr. James C. Lyon, io Carden Place.

The Club, as usual, presented medals to the best English and Science scholars in the School, and there was keen competition for them.

A commencement has been made with the card-indexing of the School registers, in order that a record of Old Boys may be compiled and published at a future date.

The work has very kindly been undertaken by Mr. Theodore Watt, and the Executive trust that, when lists of • names are issued as a supplement to future Magazines with a view to annotation, the members will give him every assistance by returning these lists with information regarding their old school-fellows. This work will be of great advantage to the Club, for, in the first place, a valuable record of Old Boys will be built up, and, in the second place, a large number of new members will, it is hoped, be 'enrolled.

The Treasurer's accounts, after being duly audited, show that the balance at the beginning of the present financial year amounted to £164 i 8s. The revenue for the year from all sources amounted to £221 los. gd. and the expenditure to L.186 7s. 1 od., leaving a balance of £200 os. lid., of which sum £184 14s. is capital. This sum represents the total of all life members' subscriptions, along with all ordinary subscriptions paid in advance.

should authorise the Hon. Treasurer to invest £200 in 4 per cent. debentures of the Scottish Northern Investment Trust, Limited.

In conclusion, the Executive desire to point out that much good work could be undertaken by the Club if it possessed the requisite funds, and, in particular, that the cost of compiling the record of Old Boys will be considerable. They will therefore be glad to receive intimation of donations or legacies for general or specific purposes from those members who desire to remember the old School and assist its Old Boys' Club.

The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the Report, stated that it was indeed satisfactory to find the Club in such a healthy condition, both financially and otherwise, and Professor W. L. Davidson, LL.D., the President of the Club, in seconding, congratulated the Executive on the good work which had been done during the past year, and on the greatly renewed interest that was evidently being taken in the Club and in the School by the Old Boys. He trusted that the success of the Club would continue during coming years, and he also congratulated the School on the honourable place it had taken in the recent Bursary Competition.

Professor Davidson mentioned that whilst in Canada last summer he had the pleasure of meeting Sir W. Mortimer Clark, Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario, who was an Old Boy, and who was extremely interested to hear of the success of the Club. Dr. Davidson stated that he hoped he would be able to prevail on the Lieutenant-Governor to be the guest of the Club at its next Annual Dinner, in the autumn.

The Report was unanimously adopted.

The meeting then proceeded to elect office-bearers for the ensuing year, and a note of these is given on another page.

The meeting, on the motion of Mr. W. Macintosh, seconded by Mr. Theodore Watt, unanimously agreed to instruct the Secretary to send a letter of sympathy on behalf of the Club to the relatives of the late Mr. Brownie, who taught in the School for the past 18 years. Mr. Macintosh, in submitting his motion, stated that Mr. Brownie was very highly respected by the younger members of the Club, who had greatly benefited by and would always have pleasant recollections of his excellent teaching.

The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Chairman for presiding.

A Roll of Old Boys.

In the Report of the Club for 1908-9, which appears in this issue of the Magazine, it is announced that a commencement has been made with the card-indexing of the School registers. The absence of an alphabetical roll of former pupils has long been felt by those who take an interest in the doings of Old Boys, and more especially by those who are responsible for the collection of " Notes about Old Boys " for the Magazine. At present, unless it is known beforehand, there is no means of telling definitely whether a man is or is not a former pupil of the School except by laborious search through the registers. To remedy this, it has been decided to go over the registers and to put on separate cards the names of all who entered the School during the last eighty years, along with any information that may be given (such as address, age, father's name, etc.), The cards, of course, will afterwards be arranged in one or more alphabetical series. Some time ago, Mr. Louis Wilson, an ardent Old Boy, went over the " Byron " register, which contains the names of pupils for about a hundred years down to 1874, and his slips, after being rearranged, will prove exceedingly useful.

But if the index is to be of use to more than one person, it must be printed, and the recently-elected Executive of the Club has voted a sum of money sufficient for commencing the printing scheme. The opportunity will now be taken of asking members to supply information about themselves and their former class-mates who are not members. The intention is to put the entries on the cards into type in sections, and to issue preliminary copies of these sections periodically along with the Magazine.

A wide margin will be left on each page, and on it the members will be asked to annotate the names so far as they can. In order to make the lists as interesting as possible, the names given in each supplement will be taken, starting from two, or perhaps three, widely-separated dates —e.g., 1830, 186o, and 189o. Up to 1881, to facilitate identification, the names will be arranged in alphabetical series of five years. In one series, for instance, will be found the names of those who entered Class I. in 1860, and, continuing through the School curriculum, left Class V. in 1865. In the same series also will appear the names of those who joined Class II. in 1861, Class III. in 1862,

and Class IV. in 1863. And so on. After 1881, when the School curriculum was extended, this arrangement by classes will have to be departed from, and the names arranged according to some other plan. Members will thus in time have presented to them a complete list of their school-fellows and class-mates, and, doubtless, they will be able to give much information concerning those who are at present unknown to the Club. The information received will be collated, and the intention is, after all the names have appeared in preliminary form, to publish a School register or roll, with notes, from which it will be possible at least to identify the individuals named, if not to obtain a brief account of each Old Boy's career.

The success of the scheme will depend very considerably on what support the compiler gets from the members of the Club, but if each one will go over the lists as they appear, and opposite the name of every Old Boy he knows about will write a short note giving the information (such as address, occupation, outstanding events of career, etc.) which he thinks the Club ought to possess, then there need be no fear as to the completeness of the record. Another result that may be looked for will be great extension in the membership of the Club, and, possibly, an approach to the ideal of having as a member every former pupil. The first instalment of names will be issued along with the October Magazine.

Letters from Old Boys.

During the last few months very few letters have been received for publication in the Magazine. It can hardly be that all Old Boys, distributed as they are in all parts of the world have nothing to relate worthy of these pages.

There must have been many incidents and experiences which would make good "copy." We hope our next Letterbox will be overflowing.

A Joint Cricket Match.

It is expected that a cricket match between past and present members of the School, and, possibly, an Aber-

deenshire eleven, will be arranged for some date in June.

A game like this, in which some of the present pupils are 'chosen to play along with former pupils, should do much to encourage those at the School to play for their places, and it is hoped that the result will be a considerable improvement in School cricket.

The Annual Dinner.

At the Annual Business Meeting, very strong committees were formed to look after the various activities of the Club. It will be seen from the Report of the Business Meeting that the Executive hope to have as guest at the Annual Dinner in the autumn Sir W. Mortimer Clark, who was until lately Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario, and the Executive trust that the attendance at the Dinner will once more show an increase over that of the previous year, and that, especially, a large number of senior members of the Club will turn out to what is, on account of its free and easy character, a most enjoyable function.

The Dramatic Section.

The Dramatic Section is considering the advisability .of giving a representation of " The Private Secretary " at the end of the year, and it is possible that on this occasion three performances will be given instead of the customary two. If the acting is as good as in previous years—and there is no reason for doubt on the matter—a most enjoyable performance will be the result.

The Dramatic Section deserves to have the hearty support of the members and their friends in what will be its most ambitious effort so far.

The Section has done exceedingly well during the last two years, and has given handsome contributions to the funds of the Club.

The London Section.

F.P.'s in and near London are requested to pay their subscriptions in future to the London Secretary, who will enter their names as members of the London Section of the Club. They will receive the Magazine as usual, and arrangements are being made to hold a series of dinners, smoking concerts, etc., for their benefit.

As it is rather difficult for the Executive of the Section to foresee what class of entertainment will prove most popular, members are invited to write or call on the Secre-

tary, who will be glad to receive suggestions. In particular, the Secretary wishes to receive indications as to how a series of " smokers " would be received, and which evening of the week would be most convenient to the greatest number.

Members are also requested to send to the Secretary the names and addresses of F.P.'s in or near London who are not already members of the Club.

Several subscriptions for 1908-9 are still in arrear, and these the Secretary will be glad to have, along with subscriptions for 1909-1o, which are now due.

The Honorary Secretary of the London Section is Mr. T. J. Wilson, Chartered Accountant, Suffolk House, Cannon Street, E.C.

Ties, hatbands, scarves, etc., of the Club colours may be obtained from R. K. Smith, 113-119 Union Street, and W. J. Milne, 251 Union Street, on presentation of the membership card.

The Magazine Committee will be pleased to receive any notes that may be of interest to the members, and, more particularly, they hope to receive articles from members both abroad and at home.
