lums from Suncheon, Jeollanam-do were exported P to Europe for the first time in 2021. Totaling 95 tons, the exports will be supplied to Stragen Pharma SA, a Swiss pharmaceutical company, and will be used as a raw ingredient for Leviker, a liver health functional food.

Prior to this, 35 tons of pickled plums were exported to Stragen in Gwangyang, Jeollanam-do to be used as the raw ingredient for making liver health functional food.

As such, plum is rich in substances that improve liver function and contains citric acid, which helps relieve body fatigue by decomposing lactic acid. Thanks to these effects, plum is considered a summer nourishing tonic in Korea and is also called a natural digestive medicine as it is rich in organic acids. This is why Korean restaurants serve plum tea as a dessert.

Plum is a spherical nucleus fruit weighing 12-20g. It has a strong sour taste, so plum is usually made into plum extract, by mixing plum and sugar in a 1:1 ratio and then aging the plum for 100 days. This plum extract can be diluted into water at a ratio of 4:1 to 6:1 according to your taste to eat. Here, adding the extract to warm water makes plum tea and adding it to liquor instead of water makes plum liquor. Plum is also used as an ingredient to further enhance the sweet and sour taste by mixing with Korean sauces such as Gochujang or Doenjang. In addition to plum extract, plum is processed and consumed in various ways such as plum syrup, pickled plum, etc. Plum is harvested about 90 days after it blossoms. The plum fields in Gwangyang in March, when white plum blossoms bloom, present the most magnificent view as if covered with white clouds. Gwangyang Maesil (plum) Blossom Festival is also the earliest flower festival held during a year with a reputation as a flower festival Koreans love.

okbunja is a raspberry produced in Korea.

B Bokbunja means ‘fruit that overturns Korean chamber potty’. According to Gochang, Jeollabuk-do, the largest Bokbunja producer in Korea, the meaning is derived from a story that once upon a time, when an old couple diligently fed Bokbunja to their weak son, he became firmer, and his urine became healthy enough to even overturn the Korean chamber potty. Bokbunja has various efficacies as it stimulates the secretion of testosterone, the male hormone, to help restore vitality, is great for fatigue recovery with rich content of vitamins A, B, and C, is rich in anthocyanin, an antioxidant component, and suppresses free radicals in the body.

Recently, the ‘blood pressure control effect’ of Bokbunja extract was confirmed and led the fruit to be recognized as a functional ingredient of health functional food by the Korea Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. If Bokbunja extract is registered on the list of food ingredients with functional labeling, foods using Bok-bunja will be able to label its functionality in the future. As such, Bokbunja is recognized as one of the best nourishing tonics that can be obtained from nature today.

Like plum, Bokbunja is mainly processed to eat, into extracts, liquor, vinegar, and juice for example. Delicious Bokbunja extract can also be made at home by mixing Bokbunja and sugar in a 1:1 ratio, crushing Bokbunja finely, sealing it, and aging it for about 3 months. The popularity of Bokbunja vinegar as a health food is also increasing. Jinnong Food’s naturally fermented vinegar is famous and even has a higher value as it is made by an agricultural food master in Gochang. This place has developed and patented Bokbunja balsamic salt.

From Plum Syrup to

Bokbunja Wine he hometowns of Korean plum are T Suncheon and Gwangyang. In 2021, Suncheon plum especially signed an exclusive sales contract with the LA-based direct store of Wooltari Mall in the U.S. and is exporting plum extract, plum jelly, and plum Hotteok (syrup-filled pancake) to the U.S.. Last year, 1,500 bottles of plum extract and 40,000 of plum Hotteok were exported to the U.S.. Suncheon N Maesil Co., Ltd. is producing plum pills by drying only the flesh.

Among plum in Gwangyang, the Hong Ssang Ri Maesil Family of Cheong Maesil Farm is famous. Run by a plum master, there are various types such as plum Gochujang, plum jam, plum jelly and plum candy, plum concentrate. The Maesil Kimchi from the Daap Meayul Farming Association is also distinctive, as a product that effuses the scent of plum by grinding whole plum in Kimchi seasoning. Ganam Farm’s Maesiljangajji (pickled green plum) is also a summer delicacy.

Bokbunja is mostly processed into liquor.

Bokbunja liquor has the original dark red color of Bokbunja and has a strong sweet taste. These Bokbunja liquors are spreading all over the world. First, Bohae Bokbunjajoo of Bohae Brewery Co., Ltd. is the most well-known bokbunja liquor in the world beyond Korea.

Characterized by a purple jar-shaped bottle, Bohae Bokbunjajoo was selected as the liquor for dinner during the 2005 APEC Summit.

Bohae Bokbunjajoo is exported to more than 20 countries, including the U.S., China, Germany, and the U.K. Myungjak Bokbunja, the main product of Kooksundang Gochang Myungju Co., Ltd., was exported to the U.S. last year. A premium-grade liquor made from first grade Bokbunja, it has a well-balanced sweetness and acidity. Baesangmyun Brewery Co., Ltd.’s Gochang Local Bokbunjaum also draws attention. The name Bokbunjaum was given in the sense that it has such an excellent taste and aroma that it makes one say ‘um~~’ when it is consumed. Bokbunjaum also received liquor quality certification from the Korea Food Research Institute.

Haman, the Home of Winter Watermelon in Korea Haman watermelons are shipped from around January, the winter season. They break the perception that watermelon is eaten in summer and are high in sugar content because Haman has an abundant amount of sunlight and has a large daily temperature difference is large. Founded in 2005, GFC harvests not only regular watermelon but also varieties of colored watermelons such as black skin watermelons, mango watermelons, and golden watermelons. They are mainly supplied to large Korean retailers such as E-Mart.

GFC also actively exports its products.

Although it is not large quantity, it has been steadily exporting watermelon to Japan even since before established, and from 2020, it is also exporting watermelons to Hong Kong.

Park Bun-yeon, CEO of GFC, recalled, “Since I was a latecomer in the regular watermelon market, I needed to challenge it with different watermelon. Then I came across colored watermelons and have been focusing on cultivating colored watermelons along with regular watermelons.”

Colored Watermelons, Either Black on the Outside or Yellow on the Inside In 2007, Haman succeeded in commercializing colored watermelons for the first time in Korea, and GFC played a crucial role here.

Seedless black skin watermelons also originated here and have a higher sugar content than regular watermelons, crispy flesh. The problem was that they were not easy to cultivate in Korea since they were a European variety. After four years of trial and error, CEO Park Bun-yeon finally succeeded in settling the seedless black skin watermelon in Haman and contributed to making the city known as Korea’s first seedless watermelon producer. In 2011, GFC made a splendid record of export-

Growth Trend of Cooking Oil Market after COVID-19 According to the Food Information Statistics System (FIS) data of the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT), the cooking oil market size in Korea has been on a downward trend from USD 397.608 million in 2016 to USD 371.133 million in 2019. However, as eating in increased after COVID-19, the market sized turned to a rising trend from 2020 and reached USD 423.285 million in 2021, a 5.4% increase from the previous year.

Growing Popularity of Korean Food Has also Increased the Exports of Sesame Oil

The growing interest in cold-pressed oil products and the popularity of Korean food is also increasing the exports of Korean sesame oil. Exports of Korean sesame oil increased from 616 tons in 2019 to 971 tons in 2020 and 1,135 tons in 2021. Exports increased from USD 5.359 million in 2019 to USD 8.301 million in 2020 and USD 9.096 million in 2021.

In 2021, the main importing country was the United States, importing USD 3.803 million worth of sesame oil, accounting for the largest share of the export market with 18.9%. Next is Taiwan with USD 460,000 Canada with USD 458,000 and Australia with USD 447,000. Ottogi’s ‘Seasoning Sesame Oil’ and CJ CheilJedang’s ‘Premium Sesame Oil’ can also be purchased through Amazon. com. As of 2021, 92 tons or USD 1.577 million of Korean perilla oil were exported. Instant Rice Korea has extraordinary love for rice. Rice is so closely intertwined with Koreans’ daily life as there is a saying “Koreans’ power comes from rice”, and that they ask, “Have you had a rice (meal)?” as a greeting.

This has also led to various processed easy-to-eat rice products, such as frozen rice ball and fried rice.

In recent years, demand for gluten-free products has been increasing overseas for reasons such as reducing gluten consumption. A main example is instant rice, a processed rice product without any other ingredients that can be eaten just by heating, so it is gaining popularity overseas.

What is instant rice?

The popularity of instant rice is no exception in online malls. Korean instant rice ranked first on the ‘Best Sellers in Rice Noodles’ category in Amazon.com. Although rice is not classified as noodles, rice is included in the rice noodles category because Amazon.com does not have its separate category.

The keywords Amazon.com consumers chose for instant rice in Korea were ‘quick’, ‘convenient’, and ‘delicious’. One consumer said “I’m a very lazy person, but I love rice.
