TOP GEAR FROM COUNTAX Countax tractors feature in Top Gear’s ‘Britain is Great’ episode - a celebration of the very best of British engineering

O

n the 4th of August, BBC 2’s Top Gear aired the final episode of the 20th season.

The main section of the show was a piece entitled ‘Britain is great’ - a feature that showcased the very best of British engineering.

As the UK’s leading manufacturer of garden tractors, Countax was approached by Top Gear to appear in the show.

Three Countax tractors (a C600H, C600-4WD and A230D) were shown making their way from the Countax

factory to central London.

Segments of the journey saw the tractors driving straight through Hyde Park - much to the annoyance of the tourists and sunbathers on the banks of the Serpentine.

The segment concludes with Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond driving their red, white and blue F-Type Jaguars down the centre of The Mall.

On either side of them are examples of the very best of Britain including F1 cars, Bentleys, Aston Martins and the

three Countax tractors.

New Holland delivers tractor to RSPB

T

he RSPB nature reserve at Berney Marshes, Norfolk, is the latest satisfied New Holland customer taking delivery of a T6.140 tractor this month.

The reliable, fuel efficient and exceptionally manoeuvrable machine will be used at one of the largest expanses of wet grassland in the UK. The RSPB has over 200 nature reserves around the country covering 151,200 hectares of land.

The T6.140 which has been fitted with a New Holland front loader will be used for the general management of the nature reserve.

The reserve is home to the tens of thousands of wintering ducks, geese and swans that visit the estuary and surrounding grazing marshes.

Mark Smart, Site Manager said “The tractor is already allowing me to do work that I would not have been able to do with the old one.

“I have found it a very easy tractor to get used to. It seems to be very economical and is a pleasure to operate.

I am looking forward to getting it into some wetter sites, as opposed to the hard, dry compacted clays I am currently on, in the next week or so.”

The four cylinder T6.140 produces up to 143hp and a maximum of 590Nm of torque with Engine Power Management (EPM). The four cylinder design ensures outstanding manoeuvrability, ultimate flexibility and exceptionally efficient productivity in compliance with T4A emissions.

ollings Brothers of Abbotsley Ltd the Cambridgeshire based Case IH dealership have acquired Northamptonshire based Woodlands of Brigstock Ltd, in a move which will further improve the service they offer to customers across their respective trading areas.

Collings Brothers which has branches at Abbotsley and Chatteris in Cambridgeshire, announced the purchase of Woodlands Brigstock Ltd, which operates a single outlet at Brigstock in Northamptonshire, to staff of both companies earlier this week. Staff at both Collings Brothers and Woodlands will be unaffected by the deal between the two businesses.

A CLAAS ABOVE CLAAS driver assistance systems – innovations and attractive entry-level models

With their combining innovations for 2014, CLAAS is once again demonstrating its innovative strength, particularly in the area of intelligent driver assistance systems and, by introducing new models in the lower power range, facilitating access to these modern combining technologies.

A

fter the introduction last year of CEMOS AUTOMATIC, the world’s first fully automatic combine harvester setting for separation and cleaning, just one year later CLAAS hass extended its driver assistance technology offering with the addition of three new systems: Automatic throw direction adjustment for straw distribution A tyre pressure control system for the rear tyres The new GRAIN QUALITY CAMERA. LEXION 740 For the 2014 season, CLAAS has extended the LEXION model series towards the lower end of the power range with the addition of the LEXION 740 model. Although the LEXION 740, with its 294/400 kW/PS (maximum engine output according to ECE R 120) has slightly less power than the next bigger model, the LEXION 750, it has the same engine – a 6-cylinder Caterpillar C 9.3, and shares other equipment features: a 10,000 litre grain tank capacity (optionally 9000 litres) and 1420 mm-wide APS threshing system.

Its APS HYBRID SYSTEM combines the tangential APS threshing system with ROTO PLUS residual grain separation.

It is distinctive in that the speed of the drums in the threshing system is adjusted independently of the speed of the two rotors and means that the APS HYBRID system threshes particularly gently whilst maintaining a high throughput rate.

Automatic throw direction adjustment With the introduction of the new LEXION 740, CLAAS has not only provided entry-level access to the tried-and-tested technology of the APS HYBRID system but at the same time has also introduced two new features - throw direction adjustment and rear axle tyre pressure control.

cally adjusts the throw direction on the radial spreader according to side wind and slope incline.

Two electromechanical sensors fitted on the lighting arms at the rear of the combine harvester continuously measure the side wind and slope incline.

After calculation, the measurement values are passed to the control system that controls the side adjustment of the paddles on the radial spreader, so that straw is always distributed evenly across the whole working width of the cutterbar.

Automatic tyre pressure control system The new automatic tyre pressure control system is optionally available for all five models in the 700 model series. It reduces the ground pressure loading produced by the rear axle to the low level of a front axle with TERRA TRAC drives.

In the field, the adjusted tyre pressure prevents soil compaction and slip, and increases traction.

When on the road, the automatic tyre pressure control system ensures a higher level of driving stability, less tyre wear and lower fuel consumption.

The basic settings for the tyre pressure control system are made using the CEBIS terminal in the cab. When the road travel switch is pressed, the tyre pressure is automatically adjusted to the value previously set for road travel.

After arriving back on the field, the tyre pressure is automatically reduced back to the pressure set for fieldwork.

GRAIN QUALITY CAMERA Using the third innovation, the GRAIN QUALITY CAMERA, the driver can now assess the quality of the threshed grain in real time and continuously, and immediately draw conclusions on which to base any changes in his combine harvester settings.

Previously, the threshed product could only be assessed visually by looking through the grain tank window but that is now possible via the CEBIS ter-

minal.

The technology involved includes a high-definition colour photo camera that is mounted on the head of the combine harvester’s grain elevator, from where it takes high-precision pictures of the crop in the elevator every second.

These pictures are passed to internal picture evaluation software which uses these images to calculate the nongrain components, such as straw, chaff and awns as well as the proportion of broken grains.

These values are sent to the CEBIS display where they are either shown as bar diagrams or as real images, with areas of low grain quality marked in colour.

The driver receives an active visual alert if limit values have been exceeded.

The GRAIN QUALITY CAMERA will initially only be available for the LEXION 780 and 770 model series.

Another innovation for the LEXION. For next harvest CLAAS will also have available a new TERRA TRAC model, the LEXION 750 TT, which will provide a new entry level option for those wanting access to tracked combines.

A particularly distinguishing feature of the CLAAS TERRA TRAC track roller unit is its hydropneumatic suspension. This reduces shocks because of hydraulic cylinders which automatically adjust each of the individual drive wheels, land wheels and support rollers to ground contours, thereby ensuring the levelling required, improved cornering stability for the combine harvester and more comfort for the driver.

In comparison to a wheeled machine, the track roller unit also has less adverse impact on the soil, with the advantage of better traction in wet conditions and on slopes. CLAAS offers a total of four different TERRA TRAC running tracks in three widths for driving speeds of up to 40 km/h.

CLEAN UP YOUR ACT Clean Up Your Act With Steve Birchall

S

teve Birchall has some sound advice for poultry producers.

No poultry producer can afford to hinder flock performance by allowing a build up of micro-organisms.

Even low disease levels drag profits back, and skimping on the cleaning routines between flocks is false economy, says Lancashire based cleaning specialist Steve Birchall.

“There is no opportunity these days to rest buildings between flocks. Turn around times are tight and it is, therefore, vital that buildings are not only thoroughly cleaned they are disinfected as well.

If there has been a health problem the cleaning and disinfection treatment should take account of it”, says Steve, who has been operating

,

a nationwide contract poultry shed cleaning business for over 30 years.

His teams are equipped to carry out whatever cleaning regime producers require and he suggests a good standard routine for any one who wants the best safe guard.

After a litter has been removed, the building and any equipment either retained inside or taken out should be power washed at about 2000 psi with a combined cleaner/ sanitizer/deodorizer which should remove 80% of micro-organisms at this stage.

“Older buildings are more difficult to clean than more modern ones”, Steve says “But if you are going to do the job at all then its worth doing it properly and you have to take sufficient time, particularly in breeder/laying units where nest boxes and equipment have been in place for 12 months or more.

Broiler units with a 6 or 7 day turnaround are less difficult.

However, people who prefer to do what is a rather unpleasant job , themselves often

get rather jaded before it has been done properly and if there are other enterprises in the farm they have to keep breaking off to do other work.

Poultry buildings, weather they are broiler, breeder, layer or turkey units not only need to look clean, they must be disease free.

The standard routine might, in the event of a flock health problem be extended to include a powerful viruside”.

All the products used should be biodegradable and safe should there be a run off into watercourse.

Anyone cleaning poultry units, he stresses, should also have regard for human health as well as that of the birds.

“When disinfecting and fogging, you should wear proper respirators and protective clothing and weather you own a site or are a contractor like myself, you should provide employees with the proper equipment”.

he launch of the new compact Zetor Major model, which went into serial production in February this year, is expected to provide a boost to the company’s sales. Orders stood at 350 tractors before the first machine came off the production line, and the total build figure for 2013 is now expected to be more than 1,000 units.

Speaking at the opening of the new Zetor Gallery at the company’s Brno factory, Mr Lipovsky also outlined future developments for the brand that would see the number of tractor ranges built double from the current three to take in models from 50200hp.

The Zetor Maxterra is set sit at the top of the range, he said, although it’s not scheduled for launch until 2015.

Likely to feature a six-cylinder engine, the tractor is still on the drawing board, with Czech design houses and the company’s sales teams working together to develop the new range.

FORTERRA RANGE Although these brand new tractors may still be a couple of years away, there’s plenty of innovation going on with Zetor’s existing ranges, including many developments that can already be seen on models arriving in the UK. All Forterra tractors, for example, now feature Zetor’s 16-valve, 4.2-litre engine.

First introduced on the Forterra 135 to meet the EU Stage IIIA emissions standard, the engine has now been fitted with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to 16 | AGRINEWS | Issue 23 | September 2013

meet the Stage IIIB standard in the Forterra HSX range.

The novel DPF can be cleaned on-farm as part of the normal servicing process, and this highly efficient engine with mechanical fuel injection has a fuel consumption claimed to be 2.9 litres/hour lower than the previous eightvalve engine used in Zetor’s Forterra tractors.

A major development in the drivetrain, meanwhile, means that four-wheel-drive Forterras are now fitted with a new Carraro front axle that has a central drive shaft.

The wheelbase of these tractors is 100mm longer bringing increased stability, but the drive shaft to the new axle is also now fitted with a wet-disc braking system that adds front-axle braking and improved stopping performance overall.

Other new features on the 2013 Forterra models include better soundproofing in the cab, a high-vision panel in the roof to aid loader operations and the engine stop is now integrated into the ignition key.

Of particular interest to those using the Forterra for haulage, a new cab suspension system is now available that replaces the standard rear cab mountings with a spring-and-damper arrangement for increased comfort.

The suspension system is available now on the factory option list at about £750+VAT, and is also available as a retrofit kit from Zetor dealers for about £1,000+VAT. PROXIMA RANGE Zetor’s latest Proxima tractors

are already arriving in the UK and can be distinguished by a new front bonnet design that takes its design cues from the bonnet produced for the Zetor Major. More angled and purposeful looking than the previous design, it also features additional air vents.

Inside the cab, the roof has been completely redesigned on the Proxima to include a window to aid loader use.

The position of the radio and optional air-conditioning system has also been changed in the roof panel to fit in with the new design.

MAJOR RANGE There will be a couple of developments in this important new range before the end of the year.

In July, the first Cabrio versions were added to the Zetor price list in both two- and fourwheel-drive versions, while the two-wheel-drive Major 80 with a cab is scheduled for introduction in September.

For the time being, the Zetor Major is only available as an 80hp tractor, but the intention is eventually to have models with 50hp, 60hp and 70hp as well, with the smallest of these likely to appear in 2014.

While the high-spec Zetor Forterra HSX with its efficient engine, advanced power shuttle 30x30 transmission and air-conditioning as standard has been introduced to appeal to UK farmers looking for more sophistication in their tractors, the Major is aimed at a completely different market.

Grandfathers Rights for Pesticide Users Changes to Current Rules

A current exemption in UK law, commonly known as “grandfather rights”, allows anyone born before 31 December 1964, to use plant protection products (PPPs ) authorised for professional use on their own or their employer’s land, without having to hold a certificate (of competence) although they should still be suitably trained and competent for their job.

T

he Plant Protection Products (Sustainable Use) Regulations 2012 allows this exemption to continue until 26 November 2015, after which everyone who uses PPPs authorised for professional use must have a certificate.

In addition, after 26 November 2015, it will be an offence for anyone to purchase PPPs authorised for professional use unless they have ensured that the intended end user has a certificate.

If you don’t already have a certificate, you will need to get one by 26 November 2015 so that you can continue to use PPPs as part of your job after that date.

New Level 2 Certificate in the Safe Use of Pesticides City and Guilds Land Based Services is developing a new Level 2 Award in the “Safe Use of Pesticides, replacing “Grandfather Rights”.

If you were born before 31 December 1964, and will only use pesticides on your own or your

employer’s land, you will need to obtain this new qualification.

Alternatively, you can obtain one of the existing Level 2 Safe Use of Pesticide awards appropriate to the work and type of equipment you use.

You must take this route if you intend to work as a contractor or apply {PPPs {Plant Protection Products} to land you or your employer do not own.

Further information on the new qualifications The new qualification will take account of the fact that people working under “grandfather rights” should already have some form of training and may have many years experience in working with pesticides.

In recognition of this, the qualification has been developed so as to take significantly less time, and cost less, than the existing Level 2 qualifications for pesticide users.

The training will be based on a workbook, setting out the re-

quired knowledge, which can be studied at the candidate’s convenience.

This will be followed up with a practical assessment of competence.

As with all Level 2 pesticide awards, the training modules will be based on the type of equipment to be used.

The assessment should generally be possible at the candidate’s premises, an assessment centre or at an alternative suitable venue.

When will the new qualification be rolled out and how do I find out more?

The proposed release date for the qualification is 26th November 2013. Registration will be available through local City and Guilds NPTC Assessment Centres. Full details will be available on www. nptc.org.uk/ in due course.

The Voluntary Initiative (VI) will put a set of Frequently Asked Questions on its website shortly.

70 GLORIOUS YEARS...

70 GLORIOUS YEARS....of the Herefordshire Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs 2014 will be the 70th anniversary year of the Herefordshire Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs which was originally formed to pull together several clubs which had already been started up in the county the previous year.

The clubs were originally calf rearing clubs and the first ever recorded young farmers club was started in the Devon village of Hemyock in the Culm Valley in 1921. The members of the club were the children of Heymock area milk producers and the local United Dairies milk factory management saw a club as a public relations exercise designed to safeguard the longer term supply of milk from farms in the area.

They motivated the youngsters by involving them in an organised programme of calf rearing, with competitions and prizes for those who set the highest standards.

It was another ten years on in 1931/32 before any kind of national young farmers’ movement started to

take recognisable shape and, when that happened, a main qualification for membership was still the rearing of calves – plus other living things like pigs, poultry and bees.

Members were also expected to show a leaning towards gardening. The YFC movement was formed, therefore, for the very specific object of agricultural education, after the devastation of the First World War had the countryside on its knees and British food production became so important.

The National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs proudly celebrated its 80th anniversary year in 2012 having supported and nurtured young people who live and work in the countryside for 8 decades and the National Federation now maintains a youthful 25,000-strong membership and is one of the largest rural youth organisations in the UK with 644 clubs across England and Wales.
