NEW YEAR: PLAN AHEAD FOR BETTER 2021 SILAGE Farmers looking to make better silage in 2021 to reduce reliance on bought-in feeds

F

armers looking to make better silage in 2021 to reduce reliance on bought-in feeds should start planning now, urges Volac silage specialist, Ken Stroud, to allow time for appropriate actions. Based on experience, he offers a timely five-point plan. 1. Review your silage analysis Begin by examining the analysis of your 2020 silage, says Mr Stroud. Did it turn out as well as expected? Or are there areas for improvement? “If metabolisable energy (ME) is low, swards may have deteriorated to include less nutritious grasses, making some reseeding necessary. Alternatively, the way silage is made may need attention. This could mean cutting grass younger while it’s more digestible, wilting faster to minimise in-field energy losses, or improving fermentation so that energy is conserved better in the clamp. The average ME of UK silage has been static at about 10.6 for years. We should be aiming for an absolute minimum of 11,” he adds. 2. Communicate with your contractor If using a contractor for silaging, Mr Stroud says early and regular communication with them is key. “For good silage, grass needs mowing and harvesting at its nutritional

4 | AgriNews | January 2021

peak, not a week or two later. After heading, grass digestibility falls by about 0.5% a day. “Understand your contractor’s time constraints and inform them of yours. If you’re making changes – for example cutting earlier because you’re moving to multi-cut silage – they need to know. It’s amazing how many farmers call contractors at the last minute. “If making silage yourself, ensure all machines are fully working and serviced – again to minimise quality-reducing delays.” 3. Prepare the clamp As the ‘storage container’ for your silage for at least half a year, don’t let the condition of your clamp undo all the hard work put into other areas of silage-making, says Mr Stroud. “Many farms had problems with silage heating in 2020, which happens when air gets in and allows growth of yeast and mould. Some of this was because silage was made too dry. But I’ve seen cases where weak walls prevented clamps being consolidated to the edges, leaving air gaps. As well as cleaning clamps, repair walls so they are up to the job.” 4. Have materials ready Don’t compromise silage quality or quantity by getting to harvest and finding you haven’t got all the necessary materials

for a good preservation, Mr Stroud advises. Start by ensuring you have enough of the correct additive, he adds. “The final few grass loads on top of the clamp are the most vulnerable to spoilage. Yet these will be the ones left untreated if additive is short. If making silage up to 30% dry matter (DM), look for an additive to improve fermentation, such as Ecosyl. For drier or more fibrous silage where heating is a concern, consider a dual-acting additive such as Ecocool, designed to improve fermentation and inhibit yeasts and moulds. Similarly, ensure you have enough sheeting to keep the clamp airtight, not just for the top but also for lining the walls.” 5. Have a plan B Map out everything you need for good silage, says Mr Stroud, but also have a plan B in case something changes. For example, the weather can be notoriously fickle, he notes. “If it turns wet, be prepared to set the harvester to chop grass longer to stop clamp slippage. If it’s dry, you may need to chop shorter so it’s easier to compact. Remember, grass could be 30% DM when you start harvesting, but 35% DM once the sun has been on it longer. Again, this could affect the last few loads on top of the clamp.

EWE NUTRITION IN LATE PREGNANCY ESSENTIAL TO FLOCK PERFORMANCE

Supplementing with a digestible undegradable protein block will support colostrum production.

S

upplementing with a digestible undegradable protein block will support colostrum production while helping to meet increased energy requirements leading up to lambing In the six weeks leading up to lambing, 75 percent of foetal growth takes place, significantly increasing metabolisable energy (ME) and protein requirements for ewes. According to Dr Alison Bond, nutritionist for Rumenco, sheep farmers must ensure these increased nutritional demands are being met to protect the long-term performance of their flock. “Not only are ewes partitioning energy towards rapid foetal growth in a very condensed period, but they are also starting to develop colostrum while maintaining their body condition,” says Dr Bond. “If these increased protein and ME requirements are not met and ewes are left malnourished, lamb birthweights will be reduced which will go on to impact growth rates. Lambs will also be at greater risk of hypothermia and can even suffer from fertility issues later in life due to the impact on foetal ovary and testes development. Ewe performance can also be harmed, with an increase in pregnancy toxaemia and delayed onset of lactation.” Meeting energy and protein requirements When it comes to determining a ewe’s increased nutritional requirements, Dr Bond

6 | AgriNews | January 2021

recommends that ME is increased by 0.24MJ for each 10kg of bodyweight. The number of lambs carried and the proximity to lambing also impacts ME requirements. These varying factors make it essential to sort ewes based on their energy needs, keeping first-time lambers in separate groups to adult ewes. “For example, a 70kg ewe carrying a single, three weeks pre-lambing has a ME requirement of 12.6 MJ/day, which increases to 16.7MJ/ day with triplets – that’s a pretty substantial difference in energy demand,” she says. “Sorting doesn’t have to be overly complicated or a huge burden on infrastructure. If you have a thin ewe needing extra nutrients, stick her with higher demand ewes. So, a thin, single bearing ewe would go into the same group as your twin bearing ewes. A thin, twin bearing ewe would go into the same group as ewes carrying triplets.” Along with a rise in ME requirements, the ewe’s protein demands will also have a notable increase during rapid foetal growth in the last six weeks of pregnancy – particularly in the last three weeks before lambing. For example, a 70kg ewe carrying twins will require 93g/ day of metabolisable protein, which increases to 126g/day in the week before lambing. Improving colostrum According to Dr Bond, farmers should have forage analysed

to determine what level of supplementation will be required. To reduce competition between ewes and to maintain stable intakes, Dr Bond recommends supplementing with a high energy and digestible undegradable protein (DUP) block or bucket like LIFELINE Lamb and Ewe. Balanced with vitamin E and essential trace elements like selenium, synergistically supporting lamb vigour, LIFELINE Lamb and Ewe contains lactose, mannan-oligosaccharides and beta-glucans which work together to support the ewe’s immune function and colostrum quality. “Feeding a well-balanced, energy and quality protein bucket including minerals, vitamins and trace elements during this rapid period of foetal development can significantly increase immunoglobulin levels in the colostrum,” explains Dr Bond. Immunoglobulin content is an important measure of colostrum quality that infers passive immunity to disease in young lambs. In independent trial work by SAC, feeding innovatively balanced energy plus protein lick including minerals, vitamins and trace elements pre-lambing was found to increase colostrum immunoglobulin content by 25% more than a standard energy bucket. “Supplementing with a high energy and DUP block or bucket supplement is an effective way to provide pre-lambing ewes and lambs with the right nutrition for long-term flock performance,”

on the EL Biomulch is fitted with 72 angled blades that ensure the machine fulfils a complete mulching operation across the full working width. These blades have a 95 degree angle to maximise the effectiveness of root and plant residue destruction whilst avoiding soil smearing and crust formation. The EL Biomulch is designed to operate

within the top 3 to 5cm of the soil, with the working depth controlled by four adjustable wheels at the front of the machine. Adjustments can be made from either side of the machine and depth gauges are fitted to ensure the machine is always set level. The EL Biomulch’s hydraulically adjustable hood allows close control of the finish and can be operated from the tractor cab. The machine can be used with the hood fully closed for increased safety when working near public spaces. Designed to the same mechanical specification as KUHN’s established EL Cultitillers, the EL Biomulch has a heavy duty Duplex gearbox and adjustable rotor speeds to allow adaption for different applications.

WATER RESOURCES: WHY THEY ARE FUNDAMENTAL FOR THE FUTURE Water resources: Why they are fundamental for the future of agriculture

R

isorse idriche agricoltura Phenomena such as waves of drought and rising temperatures will become increasingly frequent in the coming years due to climate change. In different areas of the world they are already a current reality and make it increasingly challenging to engage in agricultural activities at the levels of the past. Moreover, phenomena such as population growth, urbanisation and pollution do not make the situation any easier.

In this panorama, water resources become a particularly precious commodity, to be exploited carefully and more and more efficiently in order to satisfy all the uses that are made of them. Water is in fact necessary for alimentary uses, but also for industry, tourism and agriculture. Agriculture in Europe is the sector that uses the most water resources, accounting for about 40% of the resources used each year (as detailed in this article on the use of European water resources). With the everincreasing demand for water, it is necessary to find solutions to meet the needs of people, the economy and nature. In some regions, especially during the summer months, there is not enough water to meet the demand of everyone. This is why organisations such as the European Union encourage a range of actions for the careful

and sustainable use of water resources. Let us look at this in greater detail. How agriculture affects the use of water resources The European Environment Agency estimates that approximately one third of Europe’s territory is exposed to water stress conditions, which can become particularly severe during the summer. The greatest risk concerns the Mediterranean countries, but the problem of water scarcity is beginning to affect some regions of Great Britain and Germany. Despite significant improvements in the efficiency of water use in recent years, agriculture continues to be primarily responsible for water use. In spring, the incidence rate of this sector can reach up to 60% of European water consumption, due to the large amount of water needed to support fruit and vegetable production. For this reason, it is expected that the cost of irrigation could increase in the coming years, especially if the forecast of reduced rainfall due to climate change should become a reality. Not to be underestimated is the fact that during the summer months another key sector such as tourism competes with agriculture for water demand. January 2021 | AgriNews | 13

ith the John Deere Operations Centre, farmers and contractors can manage their farm data anywhere at any time. The app is user-friendly and customers can be linked to their machines, fields and operators on their smartphone or farm computer. John Deere is constantly developing the Operations Centre, in particular to simplify its use and to enable troublefree data entry from mixed fleet equipment. The latest updates are designed to make the system even smarter and more compatible. Thanks to a new function, with just a few clicks all processes can be adjusted in the Operations Centre even after fieldwork is finished. This allows farmers to manage operations just as flexibly as with a field book, which is usually kept in the tractor. If the tractor driver has accidentally documented the wrong crop variety during drilling, for example, this can easily be corrected later on. Further adjustments are also possible for worked area,

plant protection products, tank mixtures, harvest year and crop calibration on the combine, among others. By using the free-of-charge MyOperations app, operators can also add data if they have forgotten to start the documentation or if the machine is not able to record data.

LONGER SHELF LIFE AFTER BROACHING CLAIM FOR LEADING VACCINE Meaning increased usage, flexibility and reduced wastage. Longer Shelf Life After Broaching Claim for Leading Calf Scour Vaccine Will Mean Increased Usage Flexibility and Reduced Wastage MILTON KEYNES, UK, 9th December 2020 – A new license claim for Bovilis®

Rotavec® Corona means broached vials of the UK market-leading calf scour vaccine will be able to be used for up to 28 days after first opening of the immediate packaging1. MSD Animal Health says this will mean greater usage flexibility for UK cattle producers focusing on immunity-led prevention of infectious calf scours. Bovilis® Rotavec® Corona is used for the active immunisation of pregnant cows and heifers, 12-3 weeks pre-calving, to 22 | AgriNews | January 2021

raise antibodies against rotavirus, coronavirus and E. coli F5 (K99). Calves gain protection by drinking the fortified colostrum from their vaccinated mothers.

“On the old license, this vaccine needed to be used within eight hours of opening, so this will be a significant benefit-led change for suckler beef and dairy producers,” said MSD Animal Health ruminant veterinary adviser Dr Kat Baxter-Smith. “For all-year-round calving dairy herds, for example – that may want to vaccinate successive pregnant dams

on different days – it will make an opened bottle of vaccine last much longer. Those running batch calving herds with a long calving period should also benefit. We hope this will help reduce unnecessary wastage of the vaccine on farm and save farmers money,” she added. It will still be crucial to store the vaccine properly – upright and refrigerated (at 2-8°C) before and after broaching, and after first use. A broached vial will be able to be used once more during the next 28 days after the first vaccination event and then discarded. Vaccination equipment such as needles and syringes should be sterilized. Use of a multidose syringe to minimise vaccine contamination and excessive broaching is recommended. MSD Animal Health says that vaccine vials should still be shaken well before use. The injection should be made through an area of clean, dry skin with precautions taken against contamination.

UPDATED SOFTWARE FOR BOUMATIC’S GEMINI-MILKING ROBOT OneView, a complete management system for the optimal dairy farm introduced by BouMatic

B

ouMatic introduced its new GEMINI milking robot recently. This has now been followed by last week's launch of a completely updated management system using a web application called OneView. This tool gives dairy farmers even easier access to an extremely clear overview of the robot, herd and cow performance data. The system can be configured and optimised to suit specific needs. These new improvements will be implemented in phases for all dairy farmers with a BouMatic milking robot. This development demonstrates that BouMatic milking robots can be updated in line with the latest technology. OneView OneView is the name for a completely renewed web application. This complete Gemini milking robot management system transforms all robot, cow and herd performance data into user-friendly tools. All data is clearly displayed using graphs. OneView can be accessed online on all mobile devices all over the world. The user

has immediate access to a variety of management information, such as the cow fetch list, the milking attentions and the real-time robot performance overview. Coloured alerts will help spot information that needs immediate attention. Diagnostic screens provide users and technicians with convenient access to data signals on the device (computer, smartphone or tablet) allowing dairy farmers to optimise the Gemini robot system, saving both time and money. More accurate attachment The milking robot's arm movements are further optimised to make attaching the cups even more accurate. As it approaches the udder, the arm now assumes the lowest possible teat placement, so the camera can quickly detect low teats as well. Teat recognition has also been improved. Install updates yourself The software update enables dairy farmers to install updates themselves via push messages. Previously, updates had to be implemented online or by a technician, however now dairy farmers can benefit from the latest software

functionality more quickly. Sorting options The new update offers almost limitless sorting options and a solution for every dairy farm. With OneView, numerous sorting operations (up to 90 sorting points) and configurations can be defined using different data criteria such as time, calendar, alerts, general cow information, etc. Sensory tools: as if milk could talk! OneView also communicates with the dairy farmer about the milk quality through all sensory tools. The sensors transmit all the necessary information, such as milk flow, somatic cell count, colour and conductivity. Ultimately, this milk quality analysis informs the dairy farmer on his management performance and provides the necessary insight to enable intervention and adjustment when needed. Available now The OneView Management System is widely available from today. It represents a giant step forward for users of the BouMatic milking robot.

AVARA FOODS PARTNERS WITH NEW ENGINEERING INSTITUTE

Avara foods partners with new engineering institute to offer masters degrees

A

vara Foods has formed a partnership with a newly formed engineering institute, which will offer masters degrees in integrated engineering, aimed at encouraging more young people to move into careers in manufacturing. The poultry integrator is sponsoring five places at the NMITE (New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering), which will take its first cohort of students this week. NMITE is based in Hereford, where Avara Foods has one of its processing plants. Successful applicants will have their academic fees and accommodation costs covered in full for their first year. Avara Foods will also provide placements, and projects to support the cohort, and is also working closely with NMITE on short courses and lifelong

learning. Andrew Brodie, Avara’s People & Communications Director said: “For us, this is the start of a long-term relationship with NMITE. We are an integral part of the Hereford community and the largest private employer, providing jobs to over 2,000 people locally.   “We are committed to investing in our sites in technology and automation, so we have the common goal with NMITE of encouraging more young people to move into careers in manufacturing.  NMITE offers the ideal combination of technical engineering in a modern educational style setting right here in Hereford, and this fits perfectly with our plans to invest in food manufacturing technology in our Hereford operation.”

MP’S RECOGNISE CRITICAL VET SHORTAGE AS END OF TRADITION LOOMS The BVA has welcomed a new report from MP’s that highlights serious concerns about veterinary capacity in light of Brexit.

T

he British Veterinary Association (BVA) has welcomed a new report from MPs that highlights serious concerns about veterinary capacity in light of Brexit. The House of Commons Environment Food and Rural Affairs select committee inquiry into Labour in the Food Supply Chain outlines the essential role of veterinary surgeons throughout the food chain and notes the increased requirements for veterinary certification at the end of the Brexit transition period. In the report the committee highlights the role of overseastrained vets working as Official Veterinarians in the UK. It summarises: “The example of the veterinarian sector highlights the important role that overseas-trained employees undertake in the food supply

28 | AgriNews | January 2021

chain, in this case working in abattoirs that are unattractive to UK-trained vets. In addition, these Official Veterinarians face an increase in their workload due to increased checks on exports as a result of Brexit. These factors, combined with the fact it takes several years to train vets, risk creating a situation where there is insufficient veterinary labour, without which animal products cannot be cleared for export.” BVA gave evidence to the committee on 15 September and in November BVA released a report warning of the “triple whammy” facing the veterinary sector due to the end of transition, the impact of Covid, and the need to deal with exotic disease outbreaks such as avian influenza. Commenting on the report, BVA President James Russell

said: “BVA has been raising concerns about the impact of Brexit on veterinary capacity since the referendum. As we hurtle towards the end of the transition, we are very worried about the impact on our members who are already working hard during a difficult period. “We welcome the committee’s understanding of the critical role vets have in the food supply chain and facilitating international trade in a way that protects animal health and welfare and public health. “It has long been known that the UK veterinary profession relies heavily on EU-trained vets, particularly in public health roles, and it is vital that immigration policies reflect that fact.”
