THIS 3-DAY SANITATION PLAN WILL HAVE FACILITIES READY FOR CALF SEASON

Disinfecting calving facilities prior to the calving season helps reduce future disease pressure

D

isinfecting calving facilities prior to the calving season helps reduce future disease pressure As youngstock facilities empty out over the summer months, dairy producers should take the opportunity to disinfect pens in preparation for the next calving season, says veterinary consultant Dr Tommy Heffernan. “The low level of immunity in calves makes them very vulnerable to disease, especially in the first days and weeks of life” says Dr Heffernan. “While it is important to practice good hygiene during this period and support immunity development, lingering pathogens from the previous calving season will further increase the infection risk, making it harder to keep calves healthy.” According to Dr Heffernan, pre-calving hygiene isn’t a complicated task and can be taken care of in three days: Day 1 Remove all debris, manure, old bedding, etc. from the pens. Use a power washer to remove any visible residues, paying close attention to wall and ground crevices since they capture faeces. Day 2 Steam clean the entire facility to sterilise the environment and remove any stuck residues.

4 | AgriNews

Day 3 Soak the shed with the appropriate disinfectant according to directions and let it sit dry until calving season. “When making decisions on what needs to be sanitised, look at your farm like a production line from where the calf will first be to where it will end up,” says Dr Heffernan. “Everything in that production line from feeding equipment and calving pens to gates needs to be cleaned.” Effective disinfectant Equally important as ensuring the right equipment and facilities are being sanitised, the right disinfectant must be used in the correct dilution rate, says Alison Clark, dairy hygiene specialist for Progiene. “Disinfectants must be chosen based on active ingredients that are DEFRA approved to kill specific pathogens. This is essential to ensure your disinfectant of choice is capable of preventing the spread of disease on your farm since very few products on the market kill a broad spectrum of pathogens,” Ms Clark says. To determine which pathogens disinfectant needs to be selected for, Ms Clark recommends referring back to any records from the previous calving season that show scour test kit or lab results. “A product like Tibicur will

kill TB, salmonella and E.coli, however, if coccidiosis or cryptosporidiosis are found to be present, then a product like Coxicur needs to be selected,” she says. If the pathogen status is unknown, Ms Clark advises using a disinfectant like Coxicur. “Keeping track of what pathogens are present on farm will help to choose the appropriate disinfectant. A great way to do this is through the use of Progiene calf scour test kits throughout the calving season. Within 10 minutes of collecting fresh manure, the test can detect rotavirus, coronavirus, E. coli and cryptosporidium parvum in calves,” says Ms Clark. Importance of pre-calving hygiene In findings from the 2021 UK Dairy Biosecurity Survey, 78% of farms reported having scour related pathogens in the last two years. “The majority of farms have scour causing pathogens, which are highly transmissible and pathogens like cryptosporidium can survive for months in the right conditions,” concludes Dr Heffernan. “Taking a few days to properly clean out and disinfect pens and equipment ahead of the calving season will be hugely beneficial to supporting to health and performance of those calves.”

TO DELAY OR NOT TO DELAY.. THAT IS THE OSR QUESTION

A recent twitter poll suggests that 80% of oilseed rape growers intend to drill their 2022 crops in late July or early August

A

recent Twitter poll suggests that 38% of oilseed rape growers intend to drill their 2022 crops in late July or early August, while another 20% will delay planting until after the main cabbage stem flea beetle migration has taken place. With the new cropping cycle just around the corner, ADAMA recently hosted a Twitter poll to find out when growers plan to drill their new crops of winter oilseed rape. Of the 238 people that responded, the majority (42%) have no set date in mind and will let the weather dictate when drilling can commence. Of the remaining participants, 38% stated that they intend to drill in late July or early August to enable the crop to establish and grow away from the threat of damage caused by adult Cabbage Stem Flea Beetles. The remaining 20% intend to delay drilling until September in order to allow the CSFB migration to have taken place. “Deciding when to drill oilseed rape is always a tricky conundrum,” explains Dr Bill Lankford, ADAMA’s herbicides technical specialist, “not least because

of the need to balance the costs of ensuring the crop establishes viably against its overall profitability. “Essentially there’s no right or wrong answer as no two farms are the same and neither are any two rotational strategies. Instead, growers must weigh up the pros and cons of drilling early versus the benefits of waiting until after the CSFB migration has taken place. “It’s interesting to see that 20% of respondents are willing to delay drilling until after the migration of adult flea beetles: if conditions later in the year enable these growers to establish a decent crop one would expect a lower risk of feeding damage and a reduced numbers of eggs being laid. “On the other hand, 38% are clearly determined to get a crop in and established before the CSFB migration. Whilst this strategy has the benefit of enabling the crop to build sufficient biomass that any feeding at the time of adult beetle migration will be inconsequential, there is always the risk that egg laying will be significant, and a forward crop will foster a large population of larvae which could cause notable damage later in the season.

“For the 42% who are prioritising good establishment conditions over everything else, this is understandable given the testing conditions in recent cropping cycles.” Irrespective of the strategy chosen, having an effective herbicide plan will be critical to ensuring the crop’s success. “It’s understandable that growers might be reticent about applying a preemergence herbicide until they can be confident of a viable crop,” Bill continues, “but missing out on this key timing could put the subsequent crop on the backfoot from the very start. “In practice, our trials have shown that early drilled crops tend to benefit most (especially in terms of blackgrass control) when treated with metazachlor (Sultan 50 SC) as either a pre- or early post-emergence application. Without this early season protection, crops will have to compete against weeds which may become too big to control effectively by the time subsequent herbicides such as propyzamide, clethodim and propaquizafop (e.g. Falcon) are applied later in the year.”

LAUNCH OF MLT 961 NEWAG XL TELEHANDLER

Manitou Group is expanding its NewAg XL telehandler range with a new, high performance model designed for very intensive applications.

M

anitou Group, a worldwide reference in material handling, personnel lifting and earthmoving, is expanding its NewAg XL telehandler range with a new, high-performance model designed for very intensive applications. After launching the MLT 841 and 1041 telehandlers at the end of 2020, the Group launches the MLT961-160 V+ L, the most powerful model in the NewAg XL range. This telehandler with leveling can handle loads of up to 6 t for a lifting height of 9 m. Intended for large farms, cooperatives and agroindustry, but also waste disposal sites, this model is available in two versions: with a Stage V / Final Tier 4 engine (MLT) for European and American markets, and a Stage IIIA version (MLT-X) for the restof the world. Outstanding performance With a new 156 hp engine delivering 805 Nm of torque at only 1,350 rpm and a hydraulic flow of 200l/min, this model gives a very high performance, even at low engine speeds. A new 4,500 L bucket, specifically designed and approved for the new MLT 961-160 V+ L, strengthens performance still further. With a width of 2.70 m, which is wider than the machine, this bucket allows users to avoid

8 | AgriNews

driving over the material while increasing work output. The CVT M-Vario Plus transmission offers theuser the choice of two modes with a maximum speed of 40 km/h. Comfort mode provides a smoothride for more precision, and dynamic mode generates faster acceleration for greater productivity. Thedrawbar pull has also improved, increasing by more than 30% (compared with the previous MLT 961version) for even greater efficiency. Arnaud Sochas, Product Manager, said: “The new engine delivers10% more power than the previous version and a torque increase of 50%. Combined with the high-capacity 4,500 L bucket, this comprehensive machine/ attachment solution ensures a very high workoutput in the most intensive loading and recovery applications.” To achieve even greater gains, the High View camera option, fitted to the boom head, provides a perfect view inside the trailer to optimize filling operations. A very high level of comfort To reduce noise pollution and fatigue experienced during intensive operations, the MLT 961-160 V+ L is equipped with one of the quietest cabins on the market. Comparable to those of high-range tractors, this cabin reduces noise levels to just 69 dbA. Safety is also enhanced,

with lighting under the door, which improves visibility on the Easy-Step when getting in and out of the driver's cabin, even in the dark. In another development that provides better visibility, the cabin has been repositioned higher up for an optimal view all around the machine. Available optionally or as standard on the Platinum finish, a new adaptive air suspension seat with heating and electric lumbar adjustment reduces vibrations by more than 50% for optimal protection of the operator's back. To reduce fatigue in the cabin even more, the JSM Autopower function allows the operator to control the engine speed directly with the joystick without using the accelerator pedal or the manual accelerator. Specific storage spaces are provided to enhance user comfort, including a tool box fitted under the cabin for easier access. For peace of mind while working, users can rest assured that their machine is connected as standard, allowing the dealer to easily carry out diagnostics remotely, so users benefit from improved service and have better control over the costs related to the use of their machine. In addition, Manitou Group offers a comprehensive

LAUNCH OF MLT 961 NEWAG XL TELEHANDLER

Outstanding performance with a new 156HP engine delivering 805NM of torque at only 1350 rpm range of services associated with this model, including a maintenance contract on all parts or even a warranty extension of up to six years or 6,000 hours. A reduced TCO for greater profitability. Thanks to the numerous innovations on this NewAg XL model, the MLT 961-160 V+ L offers one of the lowest TCOs (total cost of ownership) on the market, with savings of €500/year* compared to the previous model. The reduction in fuel

consumption is significant, with 10% less compared to the MLT 961 Stage IV. Maintenance is simplified with a rapid-opening cleaning hatch in front of the radiator. To reduce maintenance costs, an integrated air pre-filter is positioned on the engine hood and hydraulic oil change intervals are now 2,000 hours. To reduce the TCO further, options such as Ecostop (configurable automatic engine stop) and the centralized automatic greasing system are also available.

Like the MLT 841/1041 models, the MLT 961 NewAg XL model is available in four levels of finish: Classic, Premium, Elite and Platinum**. The Stage V and Stage IIIA versions are both now available on the market. The NewAg XL range offers a very high level of performance and comfort and a very low operating cost. With this new model, the Manitou NewAg XL range is expanded to offer a comprehensive range of highend models.

IAN FORMAN - NSTS MANAGER Crop assurance scheme requirements for pesticide application equipment (PAE) are overall very straightforward with the annual testing of the main farm sprayer and, for those growing root crops, nematicide applicators and fogging machines too. For some of the other machines working and those that are also working in other sectors it is not always quite so clear. As you will be aware, annual testing relates to PAE used in food production, but you may also be using a weed wiper, or even a small sprayer only used for jobs such as spraying grass or game cover plots, where the sprayer would not need to be tested annually. Other sectors which include livestock assurance schemes and also amenity and horticulture, are required to follow the legal requirements of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD). The SUD states that for sprayers over 3 metres, air blast sprayers, train and aircraft sprayers, the first test isn’t due until it is 5 years old, and then must be tested every 3 years. Booms 3 metres and under need to be tested every 6 years, but again

14 | AgriNews

not until they are 5 years old. Other equipment that also falls into this last category include micro-granular applicators applying Avadex, slug pellet applicators, weed wipers, seed treating equipment, along with a range of other specialised application machinery. Operator check sheets are available for some of this equipment on the NSTS website and we would recommend using these if you are not having the machines tested annually. All handheld equipment, including knapsacks, do not need to be tested, but must be inspected on a regular basis, repaired if required, and a record kept of the inspection. With this in mind, NSTS have a knapsack check sheet available on the website. NSTS also promotes the accurate application of fertiliser for a variety of reasons. These include the need to protect the environment and waterways around the UK, along with field margins and hedgerows, which all help towards a more sustainable future for land managers and could become even more important as the new ELM Scheme is rolled out over

the next few years. The second factor is an economical one, most farms will spend as much on fertiliser as they do on pesticides and so accurate application is key. The NSTS spreader tray test will show precisely how evenly a product is being spread across the full working width of the machine. Thecoefficient of variation (CV) is calculated, with the purpose of achieving a CV below 10%, a very good spread pattern. With a CV of 20%, you may start to see striping in the crop, and the financial impact could be as much as £17/ha. The cost of the test can be recouped very quickly if the spreader is found to be spreading unevenly and then adjusted to give a much more even spread pattern. If you would like further information on any of the test procedures, contact NSTS at info@nsts.org.uk, or go to the website, www.nsts.org. uk where you can search for a Test Centre near you and arrange a test on your machine to ensure it is applying all your fertiliser products on target and evenly across the field.

HUMBLE BILLS LASTING LEGACY NURTURES ENGINEERS OF THE FUTURE

A talented JCB engineer who amassed a multi-million pound fortune thanks to his interest in cars has made a life changing bequest

A

talented JCB engineer who amassed a multimillion pound fortune thanks to his interest in cars has made a life-changing bequest to a Staffordshire school dedicated to nurturing the engineers of the future.

to his life-long interest in engineering, the JCB Academy in Rocester, Staffordshire, has been given a total of £125,000

Bill Turnbull spent almost a decade working at digger maker JCB as Chief Engineer helping to develop the company’s first ever mini excavators. He retired in 1995 at the age of 65. When he died in 2019 aged 88, he left more than £4.2 million in his will thanks to an investment he made more than 50 years earlier in a rare 1937 Bugatti Type 57S – paying just £1,500 for the car. He had been lovingly restoring the prized vehicle in secret in the workshop of his home in Tean, near Cheadle, Staffordshire ever since. Only 42 of the cars were ever produced at the factory in Molsheim, France. The native of New Zealand and adopted son of Staffordshire left instructions to his executors John Seddon and Clive Rollinson to make discretionary bequests from his huge estate. Now, in a nod 16 | AgriNews

towards the construction of automation and robotics centre. The new facility will be called the Bill Turnbull Suite in memory of the benefactor. “Bill was a very humble man and also an extraordinary engineer, who never forgot his links to JCB and the friends he made while working there”, said Executor John Seddon. “He would be absolutely thrilled to think that a bequest had been made to the JCB Academy and will be used to develop the next generation of engineers in the UK.”

JCB Chairman Lord Bamford said: “Bill was a remarkable and talented engineer. This is a very fitting tribute to his lifelong devotion to engineering and will ensure his memory is kept alive for future generations following in his footsteps.” JCB Academy Principal Jenny McGuirk said: “This bequest really does put the JCB Academy in the premier league for the teaching of engineering. Robotics and automation are critical to the future and this generous bequest gives us the most technologically advanced equipment to deliver the curriculum.” Born in 1930, Bill came to live and work in the UK in 1960. He and his twin brother Bob were life-long classic car enthusiasts and in May 1969, Bill bought the Bugatti Type 57S, complete with black paintwork and cream interior. He still owned it on his death and in February this year, it sold at auction in London for more than £4 million. At its launch, the Bugatti was the fastest road car of its time. On his death, Bill’s labour of love to restore the car was almost complete, with only some final re-assembly required.

NEW HYBRID BARLEY COULD STRIKE A CHORD WITH GROWERS

Tramspread has launched a new remote control for engine driven pumps that operates using Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM).

N

ew hybrid barley could strike a chord with growers in the north and west and on heavy land A new hybrid winter feed barley being launched this autumn, which combines high yield with high grain quality, could hold particular appeal for growers in the north and the west of the country, as well as on heavier land, says its breeder. SY Thunderbolt, from Syngenta, is new on the AHDB Recommended List (RL) for 2021/22, where it has a UK treated yield of 107% of control varieties and a grain specific weight of 69.6 kg/hl, says Syngenta seeds technical manager, Paul Roche. This should give growers high confidence for achieving grain buyers’ specific weight thresholds, he says, particularly since further AHDB data showed SY Thunderbolt delivered above 69 kg/hl consistently over the last three years. But as well as its headline figures, Mr Roche says its consistent yields of 107% across all UK regions, combined with it being one of the earliest maturing varieties on the AHDB RL, could make SY Thunderbolt a particularly

attractive option in the north and west regions. Further data available on the AHDB RL also shows it has the highest yield figure on heavy soils, at 111% of control varieties, he points out. “We know that winter barley matures several weeks later in the north,” says Mr Roche, “so early ripening is important here, as well as in the west. “An early harvest also helps to spread summer workloads and gives an opportunity for early cashflow. It is also especially useful if following barley with oilseed rape. “The oilseed rape price is very healthy at the moment, and soil moisture is critical for the crop’s germination. If you can get oilseed rape up and away early while soil moisture is still available it stands a better chance against the first wave of cabbage stem flea beetle.” For growers on heavy land which is typically favoured by black-grass, Mr Roche says the combination of the top yield figure of SY Thunderbolt on heavy soils and the ability of hybrid barley to suppress black-grass with its hybrid vigour, means SY Thunderbolt looks a good fit in this situation as well. Hybrid barley has also been shown to suppress ryegrass and brome,

he says, and competes not only through its vigorous growth above ground but also through its vigorous roots. Syngenta marketing manager for hybrid barley, Sarah Hughes, agrees and says several of the benefits of SY Thunderbolt are very relevant to current farming challenges. Mrs Hughes explains: “Recent Syngenta research found that farm profitability, soil health, reducing fertilisers, loss of crop protection products, and reduced labour, ranked among farmers’ drivers for the next few years. “As well as vigorous growth helping to suppress certain grass weeds in the face of limited herbicide options, and early maturity spreading harvest labour requirements and aiding timely oilseed rape establishment against cabbage stem flea beetle, the larger root mass of hybrids may enhance scavenging for nutrients and water. “The return on investment from feed barley is very attractive at current grain prices. However, recognising the challenges that growers face, we will be maintaining the 2021 seed price for hybrid barley at the same level as last year,” Mrs Hughes concludes. AgriNews | 17

TRACTORS AND FORAGE HARVESTERS TAKE THE LEAD John Deere Machine Sync enables machines to exchange data on the move and allows operators to guide a tractor and trailer

J

ohn Deere Machine Sync enables machines to exchange data on the move and allows combine operators to guide a tractor and trailer alongside the harvester. This unique system is now also available for forage harvesters and tractors to take control during other crop unloading operations. Machine Sync was introduced in 2012 and John Deere remains the only supplier of an integrated system. The technology is especially useful during night-time operations and long working days. The global navigation satellite system (GNNS) based synchronisation allows combines to automatically control the speed and travel

direction of tractors and trailers relative to the combine. Machine Sync therefore makes harvesting safer and reduces stress for the operators. It also eliminates waste during unloading and avoids damage to both machines and crops, even at higher driving speeds. The technology is not just applicable to combine harvesters but also to all harvesting processes where crops are continuously loaded into trailers. As a result, John Deere is now offering Machine Sync for use on self-propelled forage harvesters and tractors. In particular, customers working with trailed elevator machinery harvesting potatoes, carrots and vegetables will benefit from this advanced technology. The

system also delivers significant assistance and productivity gains to vegetable growers during planting applications. For operation, Machine Sync requires JDLink telematics, a StarFire satellite receiver and a Gen4 Premium display with automation activation. Most customers would select all these components exfactory when ordering a new tractor and/or self-propelled machine, although retrofitting is also possible.

NEW £19.2 MILLION GOVERNMENT PROJECT AIMS TO IMPROVE TRACKING

A new £19.2 million cross-government surveillance programme will aim to improve detection & tracking of AMR pathogens

A

new £19.2 million cross-Government surveillance programme will aim to improve the detection and tracking of foodborne and antimicrobial resistant (AMR) pathogens through the agrifood system. The project brings together the Food Standards Agency (FSA), Food Standards Scotland (FSS), the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), Public Health England (PHE) and the Environment Agency to test the application of genomic technologies in the surveillance of foodborne pathogens and antimicrobial resistant (AMR) microbes in all four nations of the UK. 26 | AgriNews

The funding will support a three-year project to develop a pilot national surveillance network, using the latest DNAsequencing technology and environmental sampling to improve the detection and tracking of foodborne and antimicrobial resistant pathogens through the whole agri-food system from farm to fork. The heart of this ‘virtual’ network will be a new database that will permit the analysis, storage and sharing of pathogen sequence and source data, collected from multiple locations across the UK by both government and public organisations. Professor Robin May, Chief Scientific Adviser for the FSA said: “Foodborne disease in the UK is

estimated to cause around 2.4 million cases of illness a year. The cost of this burden on society is estimated at over £9bn per year. This project is designed to help safeguard UK food, agriculture and consumers by using cutting edge technology to understand how pathogens and AMR spread. Tracking the source of these issues will ultimately help us to develop better control strategies to reduce illness and deaths.” Professor Gideon Henderson, Chief Scientific Adviser for Defra said: “Antimicrobial resistance poses a major risk to public health and the loss of functional antibiotics has the potential to cause 10 million additional global deaths every year by 2050. To put this in context the current pandemic has so far caused around three million deaths globally. “UK sales of antibiotics for food-producing animals have halved in the last six years. This vital new project will build on that progress, and ensure antibiotics continue to remain effective for both people and animals.”

With regards to antimicrobial resistance, the study revealed a rise in fluoroquinolone and tetracycline resistance in C.jejuni isolates from human infections between 1997 and 2018. Fluoroquinolone resistance was more frequent in C.jejuni isolates from chicken than from other animals, whilst tetracycline resistance was more frequent in poultry and pig isolates than ruminants. Resistance to macrolides and aminoglycosides remain low. The majority of people who are infected with Campylobacter recover fully and quickly, but it can cause long-term and severe health problems in some, including young children and the elderly. MORRISONS’ EGGS FOR FARMERS RANGE HELPS FUND WOODLAND PLANTING Morrisons customers have raised £20 million to support farms and the countryside by choosing to pay a little more for Farmers range products

M

orrisons customers have raised £20 million to support farms and the countryside by choosing to pay a little more for products in the For Farmers range. The range includes Chuckle Eggs, that cost an extra 1p per egg. The funds have been ploughed back into a range of farm schemes to improve biodiversity and further improve animal welfare, the retailer said. In October 2015, Morrisons was the first British retailer to launch a dairy product where part of the purchase price went directly back to farmers.

28 | AgriNews

Milk For Farmers was the original product – at 10p-alitre more than Morrisons own label standard milk – with the full difference passed on to its dairy farmers. The range now includes Cheese For Farmers, Cream For Farmers and Eggs For Farmers which similarly give customers the opportunity to pay a little more to support farmers directly. Funds from the For Farmers range have helped the farmed and natural environment. Morrisons For Farmers ‘Chuckle Eggs’, costing an extra 1p per egg more, has enabled farmers to invest money in planting woodland

and creating insect-friendly wildflower habitats for their free-range chickens to roam around in. To date 169 acres have been planted. This month a similar insect habitat scheme is being rolled out across all Morrisons milk farms. Sophie Throup, Head of Agriculture at Morrisons, said: “Our farmers continue to face some uncertainty due to the impact of Brexit and the pandemic. So we are pleased to have passed on £20 million from our For Farmers range to help fund initiatives which may otherwise have suffered from under-investment.”

STEVE BIRCHALL FOUNDER AND OWNER OF STEVE BIRCHALL POULTRY SERVICES

“It’s not the most glamourous job, but we take price in what we do and the end result is rewarding” WHAT IS YOUR JOB IN A NUTSHELL? I am the founder and owner of Steve Birchall Poultry Services and I have three teams who travel the country cleaning all types of poultry houses. We even strip wash and rebuild traditional free range units, sell second hand diesel washers and supply a range of government approved soaps and disinfectants to your customers. HOW DID YOU END UP WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

At a young age I was always on my grandad’s allotment, after school and at weekends helping out, or as he would call it “being a pain”. I had a fascination with the fancy fowl he kept; he taught me the basics, taught me to care.

at christmas. Working with Shaver breeds and broilers for Moy Park, I was farm manager for the last 8 years of my employment there.

So, in 1970 aged 15 and much to my dad’s disapproval, I left secondary school and went to start my working life at Maple Leaf Hatcheries in Lancashire, I attended Hutton Agricultural College on day release. Maple Leaf was local and to this day I still live in the area. I started work on one of their breeder sites and continued with the same company for the next 15 years.

During my time at Maple Leaf, I got to know many poultry farmers and one asked me if I fancied washing his poultry house for him. And so it began. I invested in a small van and with a 1500psi electric washer, off I went. As i got busier, I started to employ people to help. In the beginning it was mainly broiler sites but the expansion of traditional free-range and now multi-tier systems means those now make up most of our customer base.

I worked on caged sites, broiler sites, rearing farms and even did turkeys

In 1985, Maple Leaf closed and I was made redundant.

We travel all over the country keeping the poultry industry clean.

BRP TO INTRODUCE ELECTRIC MODELS BY THE END OF 2026

BRP to invest £300 million over the next five years to electrify its existing product lines by the end of 2026

T

he first product is expected to be introduced to the market within the next two years, followed by a rapid roll-out across all product lines. BRP is developing its Rotax modular electric powerpack technology in-house which will be leveraged across all product lines. BRP is creating an Electric Vehicle Development Centre in Canada, which will focus on the “energy side”: the charger and the battery pack, as well as the complete integration into the vehicle, and a second pole of development in Austria, which will focus on the “torque side”: the inverter and the high performance electric motor. BRP is actively recruiting to expand its EV team of experts. BRP announced its five-year plan where it will offer electric models in each of its product lines by the end of 2026. To achieve this, BRP plans to invest $300M over five years in product development, specialised equipment, infrastructure, production tooling and facilities. “We have always said electrification was not a question of ‘if’ but a question of ‘when’. Today, we’re very excited to unveil more details of our plan to deliver market-shaping products that will enhance the consumer experience by offering new

electric options,” said José Boisjoli, President and CEO. “We are leveraging our engineering know-how and innovation capabilities to define the best strategy for developing electric-powered products,” he added. After developing and evaluating several concepts, BRP has made the bold decision to develop its Rotax modular electric powerpack technology which will be leveraged across all product lines enhancing the consumer experience by offering new electric options. To achieve this, BRP is expanding its Rotax electric power unit development infrastructure in Gunskirchen, Austria, and is also creating the BRP Electric Vehicle Development Centre, located in its hometown of Valcourt, Quebec, Canada. This facility will feature state-of-the-art equipment, including several sophisticated test benches and dynamometers, plus an ultramodern robotised manufacturing cell for electric batteries. “We are thrilled to create our EV expertise centre, taking steps into the world of electrification,’’ said Bernard Guy, Senior Vice-President, Global Product Strategy. “Experts on our EV team will feel the agility of a startup environment but will benefit from BRP’s financial resources

and state-of-the-art equipment to design our in-house technology,” he added. BRP’s electric path In early 2019, BRP acquired assets of Alta Motors, an electric motorcycle manufacturer, and commercialised the Rotax Sonic E-Kart, which is currently in operation at the Rotax MAX Dome in Linz, Austria. A few months later, it showcased e-concepts at Club BRP 2019 to give a glimpse of what the future could hold for both its current product lines and for other potential segments. BRP has produced several batteryelectric, hybrid-electric and even fuel cell-electric vehicles over the years. Today’s announcement brings BRP’s electric journey further into focus, with a clear vision and firm plans to roll out its electric products. Expanding BRP’s electric vehicle development team The R&D team is expanding quickly, and BRP is recruiting for several positions as it moves to the next phase of its electric propulsion technology development. With involvement from Quebec, Austria, Finland and the United States, BRP’s top talent worldwide, including hundreds of engineers and specialised technicians, will work together to develop and produce electric vehicles at BRP.
