Tests have shown that the use of silicon as a seed treatment and follar spray can strengthen crops against slug damage

4 | AgriNews | September 2022

“Thelength.application of Sirius at early emergence (GS11 stage) as a foliar spray has been shown to reduce slug damage by 44% over a 72-hour period in laboratory conditions using wheat seedlings,” explains Orion FT technical manager, Kate SiriusWilliams.delivers

Tests have shown that the use of silicon as a seed treatment and foliar spray can strengthen crops against slug damage. Sirius is a biostimulant with 21% silicon that protects seeds and also strengthens the cells of plants by enhancing cuticle thickness and increasing leaf hair

silicon in the form of monosilicic acid. This is achieved using Orion FT’s iNHiB technology which makes silicon available to the plant immediately, helping to strengthen its natural defences. The effect is a crop that is less palatable to slugs and more resilient to attack. Whilst using Sirius as a foliar spray can help the crop as it develops, Orion FT has also tested the benefit of applying the product as a seed treatment. Wheat seeds were treated with Sirius and exposed to slugs to establish the reduction in seed “Slugshollowing.usually cause the worst damage to winter wheat very early on, feeding on seeds almost immediately after sowing. Sirius reduced grain hollowing by more than 60%. When slugs were offered 25 seeds, only 7 were damaged when treated with Sirius, versus 18 with untreated seeds,” she explains. Slugs are attracted to seeds within hours of sowing and will feed as soon as the seed has taken in water, eating the embryo, killing the seed, and often eating part or all of the endosperm, resulting in the characteristic seed hollowing.

SILICONE STRENGTHENS CROPS AGAINST SLUGS

“Sirius essentially makes the seed less palatable to the slug. When applied as a seed treatment this helps enable the seed to germinate. When applied as a foliar spray it strengthens the plant and also makes it less palatable to slugs,” she concludes.

“However, it’s not just the least nutritious parts of the DM that the microbes that cause maize silage losses feed on. It’s the nutritious sugars and starches. So not only is there less DM, but the DM remaining is lower in energy.

Certain microbes can also reduce silage palatability and cause mycotoxins,” he adds.

Prospects of low winter silage stocks - due to poor grass growth during the summer drought and early opening of clamps for buffer feeding

Prospects of low winter silage stocks – due to poor grass growth during the summer drought and early opening of clamps for buffer feeding – could make it important to employ extra vigilance to safeguard maize silage against losses this year, in order to head off forage shortfalls, says Volac silage expert, Peter Smith. Other reasons are because of the high costs of supplementing low silage stocks with bought-in feeds, he says, and to capitalise on buoyant milk prices, with maize providing a cost-effective and high-energy homegrown Inforage.parts of the country, the drought may have also impacted maize yields, he says, while high fuel and fertiliser costs mean maize has cost more to grow this year, so protecting maize silage dry matter (DM) and nutrients will be important to cover this extra “Ininvestmentanormal year it may be possible to tolerate a few losses in maize silage,” says Mr Smith. “But with grass growth halted in many areas during the summer drought, any significant inclamp losses in maize could be disastrous for overall winter silage stocks. “Even average losses in maize clamps equate to about one in every 10 trailer loads of DM ensiled being lost. If attention to detail with harvest or conservation slips this can double. When spoilage occurs around the vulnerable top and shoulders of clamps, losses here can reach 50%.

To help conserve maximum maize DM and nutrients, Mr Smith suggests some key dos and don’ts: Do not leave maize harvest too Itlateis easy to miss the ideal 3033% DM content for harvesting maize, says Mr Smith, often because contractors cannot get to the farm in time. However, harvesting maize too dry makes it less digestible to the animal and more difficult to consolidate, he says, leaving it vulnerable to losses from heating (aerobic spoilage) from yeasts and moulds, due to air in the clamp.

“Check your crop % DM regularly so you can get your contractor on-farm at the ideal time, and remember that modern maize varieties are often still green when ready to harvest. Harvesting too early also reduces maize feed value because starch isn’t fully formed in the cobs.”

GROWING LIST OF REASONS WHY GOOD SILAGE COULD BE KEY TO SHORTFALLS

Do chop maize to the correct Withlengthmaize so vulnerable to heating, chopping it to the correct length to aid squeezing out air from the clamp is crucial, says Mr Smith. Shorter chop lengths aid consolidation, especially if maize is dry, so consider chopping to 1.5-2.0cm, or down to 1.2cm if needed, he suggests. Do not be tempted to cut crops too Althoughlow it might be tempting to cut maize crops closer to the ground this year in search of extra bulk, do not do this, says Mr Smith. The stem base is low in digestibility and contains high numbers of undesirable microbes, for example from soil, which interfere with preservation in the clamp. Do ensile with the correct type of Althoughadditive maize silage is prone to heating, this is not the only way DM and nutrients are lost. Invisible losses from poor quality fermentations, caused by naturally-occurring inefficient fermentation bacteria on the crop, can account for half the overall DM losses, so it is important to target both problems with a dual-acting additive, Mr Smith points out. “The dual-action additive Ecocool, containing the beneficial bacteria Lactobacillus plantarum MTD/1 and Lactobacillus buchneri PJB/1, not only enhances fermentation, it has also been shown to keep maize silage cool and stable for more than 10 days after removal from the clamp.”

KUHN has chosen to focus on its min-till products at Tillage Live, showcasing the Optimer range of stubble cultivators, the Striger strip till machine and Prolander shallow tine cultivator. With working widths from 3m to 12m, the Optimer can be specified with a levelling harrow for improved tilth and the SH seeding unit to sow cover and catch crops. Operators can also choose between large 620mm notched discs or a smaller 510mm alternative. This, combined with rollers between 320mm and 700mm, offers a range to suit all soil conditions. On show at Tillage Live will be the Optimer L 5000 and 12,000 models along with the 300 XL. The new 12-metre model is capable of working speeds up to 18km/h which offers operators the ability to cover an estimated 20 hectares per hour. The XL 300 has the narrowest working width of the series at 3 metres, and the 24, 620mm discs create a fine tilth that is well suited to cover crops.

In response to the growing interest in minimal tillage cultivations, KUHN has developed its Striger strip-till range. Available from 4 to 12 rows, the Striger is designed around a parallelogram system that allows all elements to operate independently, ensuring excellent ground following characteristics. The advantage of the Striger is the ability to apply natural fertiliser, such as slurry or digestate, directly into the strip. The machine has also been adapted by some users to carry a seeding unit, making it possible to cultivate, fertilise and seed in one pass.

“The SFT also champions its own whole farm or area-based metric for measuring farm level sustainability – referred to as the Global Farm Metric (GFM)as a benchmark for measuring both future performance against sustainability standards and as a basis for regulating imports of food products,” said Mr “HereBrookes.again the thinking does not reflect the science and evidence in the field. The GFM’s approach to measuring sustainability parameters like greenhouse gas emissions and resource use is flawed and skewed to favour lower-yield farming systems when the most appropriate way to measure sustainability outcomes is in terms of resource use and environmental impact per functional unit of output, such as tonnes, litres or bio-available Mrcalories.”Brookes added that it was extremely unlikely that major agricultural producing and exporting nations would buy into an area-based metric and as a consequence, a system of regulating UK imports based on this metric would be unlikely to comply with World Trade Organisation rules relating to non-tariff barriers. Noting that the UK Government has promised to publish a land-use strategy by 2023, Mr Brookes said the post-Brexit re-set for UK farm policy should have begun by developing a coherent land use strategy based on an evidence-based assessment of the competing demands and priorities placed on the UK’s land resource.

AGRICULTURAL POLICIES MUST FOLLOW THE SCIENCE & EVIDENCE

Writing on the Science For Sustainable Agriculture website, Graham Brookes of PG Economics said the science points to a need for sensible combining of production methods and techniques used in both high and lower intensity (including organic) production systems, and to embrace (not reject) the adoption of new innovations and technologies like plant genetics, digital agriculture and precision Turningfarming.to the allocation of UK land under the threecompartment approach, Mr Brookes pointed to detailed research, focused on two regions of England (The Fens and Salisbury Plain) as a starting point. Based on, and interpreting this research, he suggested an allocation of land of about 60% in high yielding/ intensity farming, 25% as natural habitat (no agriculture) and 15% in lower yielding, extensive farming for the country might be appropriate. Against this background, Mr Brookes said it was extremely disappointing to see the Sustainable Food Trust (SFT) advocating in its recent report, ‘Feeding Britain from the Ground Up’, that UK agriculture should adopt a two-compartment vision based solely on a lower intensity (largely organic) production base coupled with some land reverting to natural habitat, as the most suitable model for domestic supportand“Unfortunately, production.thesciencetheevidencedoesnottheSFT’sblueprint because it is built on flawed and unrealistic assumptionswhere the mix and volumes of future domestic organic-based production are overstated and then matched to a changed and reduced demand for food in the UK,” observed Mr Brookes in his article Feeding Britain sustainably.

With the use of prescription maps, Kverneland claims that the guesswork is taken out of deciding upon spray volumes before the tank is mixed. The company believes that prescription maps have huge potential in the management of farms and it is looking to integrate sprayer operations into the overall picture. This ambition certainly forms a logical extension to precision farming, and the adoption of such an holistic approach, via digital technology, may well come to be seen as a huge advance in agriculture.

Useful addition to the toolbox However, at present, the areas selected for treatment rely on visual assessment rather than a determinative and quantifiable method; this does introduce a degree of ambiguity into a system that strives for precision through measurement.

KVERNELAND MAPS OUT THE WAY FOR SPOT SPRAYING

The latest update to Kverneland’s iXTrack T series sprayers includes several new options from nozzle spacing and spot spraying to boom height Acontrol.major advance is that a new 36/25m steel boom can be specified which allows contractors to switch between the two working widths without having to unfold the whole boom. Lower boom height Other new features highlighted by the company include the choice of an extra spray line with 25cm nozzle spacing. With the nozzles being closer, the distance between the crop canopy and boom height is decreased, while ensuring an even coverage, thus reducing spray drift. Boom height Kverneland With nozzles at 25cm and 50cm, the boom becomes a crowded place Also available is the Boom Guide ProActive automatic boom height control system which corrects the boom height via ultrasonic sensors which control the sprayer Thehydraulics.company notes that it is able to provide boom guidance in any field conditions, even at higher speeds.

To many, spot spraying involves the identification of individual weeds and their elimination one at a time using some form of sensor or camera to recognise them. However, the company points out that this means the farmer has to estimate just how much chemical will be required for a particular area, running the risk of there being too little, necessitating a return to base for a refill, or there being too much, and so chemical is not used and the surplus has to be disposed of somehow. Mapping the problem

A hybrid mode can be selected which not only measures the distance to the plant, it also measures the distance to the soil, thus setting the boom at an optimal average height where crop emergence may be uneven or poorly Althoughestablished.thenozzle spacing is halved, the boom height is only reduced to 30cm from 50cm as allowance needs to be made for the gap left at the top of the fan pattern. The cleaning and rinsing system has also been updated with some new items that increase safety and hygiene.

Noble Foods’ Purely Organic egg brand achieved carbon-neutral status in July, but as Michael Barker finds out, that’s just the start of the company’s sustainability ambitions In the race to net zero, Noble Foods hit a notable milestone in July when it announced it had achieved carbonneutral status for its Purely Organic egg brand following accreditation from the Carbon Trust. The achievement is a significant one for the business, and is a welcome good news story at a time when the industry is battling a plethora of challenges from avian flu, to input cost hikes.

Measuring and reducing a company’s carbon footprint is not a straightforward exercise in poultry. Feed is the cause of as much as 70-80% of all emissions associated with poultry farming, according to Evans, and that’s before you factor in packing and onward distribution to retailers. Soya is a particularly tricky input from a sustainability point of view, so Purely Organic has been reducing airmiles by sourcing alternative raw materials closer to home. In its work with the Carbon Trust, Noble even went as far as looking at consumer egg usage in terms of how they are cooked and disposed of.

Noble Foods is promoting the achievement with redesigned packs prominently featuring the words ‘Certified Carbon Neutral’, backed by in-store shopper marketing and digital media activity. It’s too early to say whether the learnings from the Purely Organic exercise will be rolled out to the company’s other lines, but it’s safe to assume that the learning process will feed into the wider sustainability piece.

HOW NOBLE FOODS SET THE SUSTAINABILITY AGENDA

32 | AgriNews | September 2022

Analysis: How Noble Foods set the sustainability agenda with carbon neutral eggs POULTRY

Noble Foods’ group environmental manager Glenn Evans explains that carbon neutrality has been achieved in around 15 months and was born out of work the company was doing with on-farm environmental assessment business Alltech E-CO2. “We realised this was something we could go for,” Evans recalls. “So we started footprinting in earnest around about May of last year, initially on 13 Purely Organic farms. With other products you would just measure a calendar year but with poultry you have to use a flock, which is 70odd weeks, to make it more accurate.”

“It’s a real case of cradle to the grave,” Evans adds. Carbon footprinting is still in its infancy and that can give it a certain lack of clarity, particularly in terms of how to measure and benchmark progress. In order to gain legitimacy for its claims, Evans says it was crucial to work with the Carbon Trust.

“When we started to look at this in terms of providers for certification, we knew that the Carbon Trust is probably the most recognised label on product,” he says. “But then there’s also the fact that they are true gold standard operators in this area – the rigour that they go to in terms of assessment was really important to us, given the fact that Purely Organic has got good environmental credentials anyway. We didn’t want to be aligned with any sort of greenwashing or anything like that.” Expanding on the point, Evans points out that the Carbon Trust scrutinises a business’s full sustainability strategy and won’t simply let anyone buy themselves an environmental halo. “The Carbon Trust’s first remit is the fact that you have to have a proper carbon reduction plan and that any residual emissions can be offset, rather than it just being business as usual and paying the money for offsetting. That’s not what they’re about,” he Thatadds.credibility is vital given the scrutiny brands rightly come under for their claims.

NEW AVIAN INFLUENZA PREVENTION ZONE DECLARED

Following a number of detections of avian influenza in poultry and wild and captive birds across Devon, Cornwall and parts of Somerset, the UK’s Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer has declared an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) across the region to mitigate the risk of further outbreaks of disease

UK’s Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer Richard Irvine said: “Following a number of detections of avian influenza we have declared an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone across Cornwall, Devon and parts of Somerset. This means that all bird keepers in the region must take action now to both prevent disease getting in to flocks and it spreading any further.

New avian influenza prevention zone declared across Devon, Cornwall and parts of Somerset

The UK has faced its largest ever outbreak of bird flu with over 130 cases confirmed across the country since late October. The introduction of this regional AIPZ comes after the disease was detected in captive birds at nine premises across the south-west region since last month, as well as several cases in wild seabirds.

“Whether you keep just a few birds or thousands, you are now legally required to introduce higher biosecurity standards on your farm or small holding. It is in your interests to do so in order to protect your birds from this highly infectious disease.”

The introduction of an AIPZ follows the recent increase in cases of bird flu in poultry and other captive birds in the area and increased reports of mass mortality in wild birds.

I come back to my fundamental point that the industry – whether it be eggs or poultrymeat – has built its success on providing the customer with a great affordable, healthy and safe product, unsubsidised. Like any successful industry, we do have problems from time to time, but because we live or die in the market we overcome these problems as fast as we can, adopt new ideas and then go forward

Myagain.ask is that for anyone who has a good idea that will help us become even more successful to let us know – if not, let us get on with the job in hand and stop knocking us and showing their ignorance and bigotry.

September 2022 | AgriNews | 35 WE NEED TO TAKE IDEAS FROM PAST TO ADDRESS CURRENT LABOUR WOES

POULTRY

Charles Bourns: ‘We need to take ideas from the past to address the current labour woes”.

By Charles Bourns, broiler Gloucestershiregrower, It’s funny how, when you are watching something on television, it triggers a thought. I was watching the opening of commentatorandCommonwealththeGamesatonepointthesaidthatin the 1950s the country was short of labour and the Government passed a bill that allowed industry to bring in labour from abroad. So then you saw workers coming from Ireland, the West Indies, Asia and east Africa, and this struck a chord with me because we, as a country – let alone as an industry – are in a similar Butposition.there is one major difference. In the 1950s, a large number of politicians were also businessmen and thought like such, whereas now we are run by professional politicians who put themselves first and the country second and are therefore not prepared to make the common sense decision and let more workers in to keep the country progressing and not Whenstagnating.youthink that the poultry industry in 1955 grew five million chickens a year, the fact that now it is over a billion shows what a success story it is and what a big shame it would be if we were to go backwards. That brings me on to another topic. I was lucky when the industry was hit by the extreme weather of 40 degrees, as I had four-day old chicks, but we have just gone through the last amber heatwave and I know how hard it is to look after the farm, working at night when the birds are cool and can eat. What has annoyed me is the attitude of those who really do not know what it is like and do not trust the farmer to look after his livestock, almost taking the attitude that they know best. They then use this as a stick to beat intensive farming Wewith.farmers will take action to help get rid of this problem, and I feel we need to look at the design of the modern chicken shed, as most ventilation systems have been designed to create good litter, but not with extreme heat in mind. Some believe ventilation rates need looking at, but I was always told that once the temperature in Fahrenheit combined with humidity went above 180 degrees, you are in trouble. I lost chicken in my second crop in 1990 and ever since then I have over-fanned my shed and you can see their feathers moving, which seems to work. I have not put in misters yet as in the West Country, where we do get high humidity, they do not always help.

AND SPACIOUS CARGO AREA

Dacia Duster Commercial is the latest model to feature the brand’s new visual identity Based on the rugged Duster SUV, the specially converted Duster Commercial offers up to 1,623 litres of useful volume and up to 503kg of payload capacity

DACIA DUSTER COMMERCIAL IS MORE ATTRACTIVE THAN EVER TO BUSINESSES

A full-length removable load cover keeps the cargo bay’s contents shielded from prying eyes, aided by the opaque film applied to the fixed rear windows. Finally, rubber mats and a builtin alarm system round out the protection measures. With up to 1,623 litres of cargo space on offer, the Duster Commercial is a natural fit for hard-working trades. The absence of a load sill makes accessing the space easy and, with a bay length of 1,792mm, even the longest loads can be accommodated with ease. A generous load width of 1,247mm and a floor-to-ceiling height on the 4x2 models of 917mm means bulky items can be easily transported too. Meanwhile, a maximum payload of up to 503kg (depending on model) ensures

Three-year, 60,000-mile warranty with three-year roadside cover as Ordersstandardopen now, with prices starting from £13,995 excluding VAT The Dacia Duster Commercial has been enhanced with the brand’s bold new visual identity, adding to the model’s proven appeal to hard-working businesses that require a quality, robust vehicle that offers outstanding value. Beyond a simple shift in design, the new identity builds on the strongly held values that are behind the Dacia success story. By applying this identity to the Dacia Duster Commercial, Dacia is extending its commitment to business customers, as well as retail car buyers, bringing even more versatility and capability to an already practical package.

The Dacia Link emblem, a strong feature of the brand’s new identity, now features front and centre in the middle of the grille, itself redesigned and now in white. Like the links of a chain, the interlocking ‘D’ and ‘C’ contribute to a brand-new emblem that reflects the robust simplicity of the new design. The emblem also features on the centre of each wheel. Another visible change is the addition of the logo on the rear panel and steering wheel. The minimal design sees the lettering pared back so only the essentials remain, enough being left to clearly distinguish each letter.

The new visual identity adds to the many attributes already offered by the Duster Commercial. Based on the Duster SUV, it is homologated as an N1 commercial version, building on the Duster’s rugged and resilient nature by adding a tough, hardwearing flat load area, offering 1,623 litres of space and up to 503kg payload capacity.

It is powered by a range of punchy yet efficient petrol and diesel engines, complete with the option of Dacia’s dual-clutch EDC automatic transmission. For the more adventurous tradesperson, farmer, or utility company that needs to access remote areas, a four-wheel-drive model offers genuine go-anywhere capability.

For simplicity, two trim levels –Essential and Expression – bring the same generous equipment to the Duster Commercial as the Duster SUV, including an 8-inch touchscreen boasting Dacia’s Media Display infotainment system complete with both Android Auto® and Apple PRACTICALCarPlay®.

The conversion takes place right at the factory, with experienced Dacia technicians replacing the rear seats of the Duster with a completely flat wooden load floor covered with a hard-wearing surface. A sturdy mesh bulkhead safely separates the load area from the front passenger compartment, while a series of lashing eyes make it easy to secure loose cargo.
