ROBERT DAVIDSON & SON TAKE DELIVERY OF 75,000TH AMAZONE SPRAYER

It was way back in 1969 when the first Amazone sprayer made its debut onto the market.

Itwas way back in 1969 when the first Amazone sprayer made its debut onto the market. Designated the S range, those original 400 and 600 litre mounted sprayers started a journey towards the unbelievably comprehensive Amazone sprayer programme that we see today. That range includes UF mounted sprayers from 900 – 2000 litres (plus front tanks for up to a 3,500 litre wraparound combination),

UG and UX trailed sprayers from 2,200 litres through to 11,200 litres, including the new UX 01-L in 8,000 and 9,000 litre tank capacities, plus, of course, the flagship selfpropelled, the all-new Pantera 4504.

Today, the Amazone family business, and the two owners Christian and Dr. Justus Dreyer, see it as their task to continually increase precision through innovative crop protection technology in order to further protect the environment and to reduce costs. But as the machine was taking shape

on the drawing board back then, the design team could not have comprehended the complexity and level of technology that would be found on an Amazone sprayer those 50-odd years later - a case of from little acorns then

usage by the GPS actuation of 50 cm boom sections in short work, but also automatically enables the operator to have the correct nozzle size always in use as well as being able to select the appropriate nozzle type from the cab.

And it was that unique technology that first drew farmers and contractors, Robert Davidson & Son Ltd, to the Amazone sprayer range when they heard about AmaSelect, the unique electric individual nozzle control system that not only reduces chemical

Robert Davidson & Son Ltd has been farming in Essex since the 1920’s and settled in Peldon in 1946. The farm has grown exponentially since then with the current acreage at around 1350 ha with a mix of cropping that includes continuous winter wheat on the home farm plus, elsewhere, some marrowfat peas and then increasingly crops for energy, with rye on the lighter land and then maize grown for both foraging as well as for the combine. On top of this area, another 800 -1200 ha of maize and rye are foraged for neighbours as well.

Designated the S range, those original 400 and 600 litre mounted sprayers started a journey towards the Amazone comprehensive range

operations as well as an increased use of liquid fertiliser so the ability to select the right nozzle from the seat was going to be extremely useful. Having loaned a machine while they waited a year for the AmaSelect system to become a reality, September 2015 saw the new 40m-boomed, Pantera 4502 arrive at Brickhouse Farm, Peldon, Colchester. Now with 5,000 hours on the clock and 7 years later, that original machine has now made way to its improved successor, a brand new Pantera 4504 and, remarkably, the 75,000th sprayer to have rolled off the Amazone sprayer production line and thus a major milestone in Amazone history.

‘We are delighted to take delivery of such an iconic machine’, adds Robert, the third generation and on the farm since the early 1970’s. ‘The out-going model has done sterling service and, although we looked at what else was on the market, its narrow road width, 50kph road speed and improved suspension makes it ideal for our further away contract farms plus the service support from Amazone and

local dealer, R.W. Crawford contributed to our continuation with the Amazone brand’.

The decision to replace the old Pantera with a 36 metre option stems from the increasing acreage of maize grown on 75cm rows. James Faulkner, partner and next generation of the Davidson family, goes on to explain the rationale behind the reduction in boom width, ‘AmaSelect has evolved since 2015 and now, with the AmaSelect Row option, we wanted to supply liquid N targeted directly to the plant. The sprayer has the 25cm nozzle spacing option and is able to automatically choose the most appropriate nozzle above the plant and thus make better use of the reduced rate of fertiliser able to be applied The new ContourControl boom height guidance system keeps the boom on track above crop and automatically recognises the nozzle spacing and thus the nozzle spray pattern selected and the height above crop that is required.

The addition of SwingStop horizontal boom movement control, with its built-in

acceleration sensors, means that the turn speed of each nozzle along the boom is known and then the latest AmaSelect software automatically selects the best nozzle size, or nozzle combination, to make sure that the sprayer applies the same rate along the full boom width even when driving around curves. With the farm’s increasing maize acreage, the good underbelly clearance along with the on-the-move, hydraulic track width adjustment again make the Pantera 4504 ideal for spraying those tall row crops at the wider row spacings.

Sprayer production for the Amazone group is now concentrated at the new, purpose built assembly facility at Bramsche. Here, all under the one roof, the complete sprayer programme is put together and wet tested ahead of delivery. This new 20 ha site will ensure that there is room for growth when it comes to sprayer numbers. ‘Hopefully in a few years’ time when we are ready for the next one, we will get the 100,000th machine,’ concludes Robert.

FINGERS CROSSED FOR DRY WEATHER FOR BRITISH PLOUGHING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Fingers crossed for dry weather this weekend for the British Ploughing Championships and Country Festival

Fingers crossed for dry weather this weekend for the British Ploughing Championships & Country Festival

The organisers of the 71st British National Ploughing Championships & Country Festival, which takes place this weekend (8th and 9th October) are watching the ever-changing weather forecasts closely and keeping their fingers crossed that the sun will shine for them at the weekend.

Rain is forecast earlier in the week but they say it shouldn’t affect the 250 acre site at Glapwell, North East Derbyshire. Sue Frith, Chief Executive of the Society of Ploughmen who organise the event, said, “The forecast is good for the weekend with rain earlier in the week. In fact, the competitors will probably welcome the rain after the hot, dry summer we have had as it will make the ground better to plough.”

Ploughmen - and women - from all over Great Britain will be travelling to Glapwell to take part in the competitions on part of the Chatsworth Estate which has been loaned by kind permission of the Duke and

Duchess of Devonshire. The Duke of Devonshire is the President of the Society of Ploughmen this year and will be presenting the winners’ trophies on the final day of the event.

The British National Ploughing Championships & Country Festival is held in a different part of the country each year and this is the first time it has ever been held in the county of Derbyshire in its’ 71 year history. There will be almost 250 ploughmen and women taking part in 15 different classes over the two days, from the magnificent heavy horses, to garden tractors, conventional, reversible and various vintage tractor and club ploughing classes. The top 10 in six of the classes will go through to plough for the championship titles on the second day, aiming for the Supreme Champion title and the chance to represent England in the 2023 World and European Ploughing Championships.

For spectators attending, they will also be able to see lots of vintage tractors, both static and working, two pairs of massive Fowler BB ploughing engines, demonstrations of the most up-to-date agricultural

machinery, trade stands, shopping stalls and a craft marquee.

With all this, visitors will be able to see how our farming heritage has change from horses through to mechanical machinery to the highly computerised tractors we see today. Because the site is so vast, there will be tractor and trailer ‘bus’ rides to take people around the site with volunteers from Pleasley Young Farmers taking the wheels.

Main sponsors of the event are Bridgestone Firestone, Aztec Oils and Continental Tyres, with further support from Lantra, Tama Farm Grown Solutions, Dales Agri Sales, Cheffins, Dalton Tags, Cereals Event, Homefire, Ripon Farm Services, Russells, Howard Marshall Engineering, B&B Tractors, Agricultural & Farming Jobs and AR Demolition.

The site will be easy to find, it’s just a few minutes from junction 29, off the A617. Discounted tickets are available in advance and further information can be found on www.ploughmen. co.uk or on Facebook and Twitter.

NEW DIGESTATE ADDITIVE REVEALS NITROGEN INCREASE TO HELP COST

An innovative trial exploring if a new slurry additive can improve nutrient availability has shown an increase in available nitrogen content

New digestate additive reveals nitrogen increases to help offset fertiliser cost

An innovative trial exploring if a new slurry additive can improve nutrient availability in digestate has shown a 20.3% increase in available nitrogen content and a 29% reduction in dry matter solids after the first year.

The new DigestIt slurry additive from Origin Fertilisers is a live liquid biological bacteria that has been used in digestate for the first time and has been well proven to significantly reduce ammonia emissions and increase ammonium nitrogen levels in slurry. The trial took place at a 1.2MW anaerobic digestion plant in Lincolnshire.

The 20.3% increase in ammonium nitrogen was shown after a 12-week period following the application of Digest-It. A further 29% reduction

in oven dry solids has translated to the digestate being easier to pump, which in turn has reduced machinery wear and fuel use, along with shortening filling times.

As an outcome of reducing solid content, the digestate has a thinner consistency and is therefore easier for the plants to absorb following application to the soil. Plants aren’t using as much energy to search for nitrogen, and nitrogen losses through volatilisation are reduced.

Callum Norman, speciality sales manager at Origin Fertilisers, who was involved in the trial, says that while the headline increases make excellent reading, the wider benefits of applying Digest-It shouldn’t be overlooked.

“The treated digestate had less nitrogen content than the untreated product. The upshot here is that the same

amount of land can have 13% more digestate spread on it before NVZ limits are reached, which could be hugely beneficial for growers on smaller acreages with excess digestate to spread.

“We are really pleased with the results of the trial. The environmental benefits, such as reduced volatilisation due to the conversion of ammonia into ammonium, and supplying good microbes to the soil, will be a huge benefit to all farms and help contribute towards agriculture reducing its emissions,” concludes Mr Norman.

From a financial perspective, the Digest-It trial returned a 2:1 cost benefit and only requires one application so reduces the labour requirement compared with additives that need ongoing applications.

The results have been collected from samples taken every two weeks, during the closed period of the digester after application, and then compared with previous samples taken. The feedstock for the plant is a consistent mix of forage maize and rye, which translates into a 6kg/N/tonne value.

TILLAGE LIVE MIN-TILL FOCUS FOR KUHN

UKWith working widths from 3m to 12m, the Optimer can be specified with a levelling harrow for improved tilth

KUHN has chosen to focus on its min-till products at Tillage Live, showcasing the Optimer range of stubble cultivators, the Striger strip till machine and Prolander shallow tine cultivator.

With working widths from 3m to 12m, the Optimer can be specified with a levelling harrow for improved tilth and the SH seeding unit to sow cover and catch crops. Operators can also choose between large 620mm notched discs or a smaller 510mm alternative. This, combined with rollers between 320mm and 700mm, offers a range to suit all soil conditions.

On show at Tillage Live will be the Optimer L 5000 and 12,000 models along with the 300 XL. The new 12-metre model is capable of working speeds up to 18km/h which offers operators the ability to cover an estimated 20 hectares per hour. The XL 300 has the narrowest working width of the series at 3 metres, and the 24, 620mm discs create a fine tilth that is well suited to cover crops.

In response to the growing interest in minimal tillage

cultivations, KUHN has developed its Striger striptill range. Available from 4 to 12 rows, the Striger is designed around a parallelogram system that allows all elements to operate independently, ensuring excellent ground following characteristics.

The advantage of the Striger is the ability to apply natural fertiliser, such as slurry or digestate, directly into the strip. The machine has also been adapted by some users to carry a seeding unit, making it possible to cultivate, fertilise and seed in one pass.

The Prolander, shallow tine cultivator is available in 4m, 5m, 6m and 7.5 metre working widths and is suitable for tractors with 150-300 horsepower. It is perfectly suited to a min-till system thanks to five rows of vibrating tines which break up and incorporate even heavy soils and

crop residues. This makes it perfect for breaking up weeds and preparing the soil for drilling.

Away from mintill, KUHN will also feature the VariMaster L in-furrow plough with DuoLiner which operates totally independently of the primary cultivator to offer the possibility of a drillready seedbed in a single pass.

Key to its design are two independent hydraulic parallelogram systems that attach the row of dual 600mm diameter press wheels to the plough. Using Kuhn's Steady Control automatic pressure regulation system, the DuoLiner imparts up to 90kg of pressure at each pair of wheels to achieve optimum conditioning of ploughed ground.

FENDT HAS DEVELOPED A NEW FRONT LOADER

Fendt

has developed a new front loader with a dedicated valve block, new weighing function, greater flexibility of movement, and heavier load carrying capacity. The Cargo 6 will be available on the new Gen7 700 Vario tractors and is the first Fendt loader to be fully independent, making it possible to use all the tractor valves with the loader attached.

“It is a function that will help in so many situations. Having a loader with three independent functions (lift, tip and a third valve) without using valves needed for other implements will save operators time and enable tractors fitted with this loader to be more versatile,” explains Fendt’s Ed Dennett.

A clever new hydraulic locking function enables tools to be changed in any position with the added benefit of an easy-to-use

mechanical lock and without having to crowd back the loader fully. Maintenance time has also been considered by positioning all hydraulic components in the cross beam to reduce dirt and mechanical damage.

The loader has a continuous lift capacity of 3,500 kilos and a maximum lift capacity of 4,150 kilos. This combined with a 4.85 metre lift height and a loader frame width of 1,140 mm offers greater loading stability and flexibility, especially with the new 2.55-metre-wide bucket.

The top CargoProfi model features an integrated weighing function offering both individual and total weight in each position. The button activated weighing function is also fully integrated into the Varioterminal, so operators can access loading data such as the counter and

target weight.

A new ‘memo’ function will also store boom and tool positions which will be especially popular on machines used by multiple operators. Operators can limit the lifting height and tilt angle, and store these as pre-sets, which will help to reduce the risk of catching low buildings or when loading very high trailers.

End position and speeddependent damping ensures the front loader is raised gently and smoothly and will help to minimise losses, whilst a shake function has been introduced to help deposit stubborn materials. Hydraulic accumulators act as shock absorbers to prevent vibrations and a built-in cushioning system, together with front axle suspension and cab suspension to improve ride comfort.

“This is a great example of honing a rudimentary piece of machinery to improve operational efficiencies and make life easier for the operators spending hours in the driving seat,” concludes Mr Dennett.

PRODUCING RELIABLE, QUALITY EQUIPMENT REQUIRES RESOURCES

At Joskin, we have a recipe for overcoming the recurring problems of staff shortages and lack of space in Soumagne: investing!

Producing a reliable, quality equipment requires resources. At JOSKIN, we have a recipe for overcoming the recurring problems of staff shortages and lack of space in Soumagne: investing!

Despite the health and geopolitical context, agriculture continues to play a role and the demand for JOSKIN continues to grow, so the company must find ways to produce more.

Faced with difficulties in recruiting production staff, JOSKIN is forced to rely heavily on automation. As for the problem of extension space in Soumagne, unfortunately it will once again find a solution abroad.

Soumagne, June 2022 - The focus of Victor Joskin, founder of the eponymous group, on high-tech tools in the JOSKIN production structure is not new. This focus is not denied by his son Didier, who co-presides over the destiny of the company and is in charge of the production: “We absolutely want to serve our customers as well as possible and with quality, while reducing our delivery times for “à la carte” machines, and keep some Advantage series in stock with a more attractive price for customers,” he explains. “To that end, we are investing in state-of-the-art production machinery. Despite the high initial cost, these investments result in improved quality and production processes and, consequently, in an increased user satisfaction.”

In 2022, after a (slightly) quieter period due to macro-economic events, investments in machine tools in Soumagne have resumed.

First of all, a new 41 m³ nitrogen tank was installed to supply the 5 CO2 laser cutting tables which run on 3 breaks during the week. In the same sector, two 15 kW optical fibre laser cutters for thick 4 x 2 m steel sheets were installed.

This optical fibre technology is characterised by a significantly higher processing speed, almost no deformation on the steel sheet area being worked on, and a much lower energy consumption.

Lathe with digital control, bar feeder and automatic unloading Loading robot of a machining centre 15 kW optical fibre laser for ultra-fast cutting of steel sheets with minimum overheating to minimise distortion 41 m³ nitrogen tank and Kardex automatic vertical carousels for jigs and small series of parts.

In the bending department, the installation of a new 3 m DAVI double-bend automatic press brake was finally made possible after deconfinement. In addition, a new 1,000 t press brake with a 9 m table and all the devices to precisely position the parts, as well as a bending angle control system, is currently being installed.

New press brake being assembled at the supplier (left)

and its future location in the factory (right)

On the machining side, visitors to JOSKIN will not fail to notice the Armin handling robots that replace humans in loading and unloading lathes and machining centres.

The new Iemca CNC lathe with automatic bar feeder, on the other hand, is probably more inconspicuous among the 20 machines present in this workshop. As regards the cutting, a space is awaiting the arrival of a third laser for cutting tubes and profiles.

Finally, in the welding department, 3 new robots will be added to the 14 already in operation in Belgium and Poland, and Kardex automated vertical carousels are announced for storing jigs and small series of parts before welding.

As for the available space on the site in Soumagne, JOSKIN is obliged to play Tetris in order to keep its nerve centre there and the above-mentioned technologies of high added value!

The employees in charge of the Group’s central development, production and IT were all together into a cramped building. It has therefore logically been doubled with an additional floor area of 600 m². Once completed, the teams from the technical offices will be provided with a comfortableand ergonomic working environment.

WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT TO CHANGE A TRACTOR

Landini: When the time is right to change a tractor - choices for renewing your fleet

Tractors

have a rather long working life, the duration of which depends on many factors, primarily the level of maintenance and the hours the machine has been in the field. We have talked about the great value of maintenance in several articles. It is essential to take good care of your vehicle, both for better quality and safety of work and so that you do not end up changing parts or having to buy a new model much sooner than expected. That’s why Landini has created Scheduled Maintenance Programmes, designed for the well-being of the machine, the farmer and the business, with a dedicated Landini team

and guaranteed service, for a tractor that always works at high performance.

DISCOVER THE LANDINI SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE PROGRAMME

Added to this is a statistic that is extremely variable depending on the history of the company using the tractor: the hours the tractor has actually worked in the field. As an example, a modern tractor has an average life of 15,000 hours, which is supposed to be completed in 10-15 years. This has changed a lot in the last 20 years, which is why today you can see very different machines

within the same fleet, modern tractors and vehicles that are 30 to 40 years old but still operate well.

This is because for a long time the agricultural sector has been characterised by a high ageing rate and only in recent years has it caught up with other sectors by innovating technology on machines and halving their weight. The target audience has also changed, seeing fewer and fewer small companies in favour of more structured agricultural businesses, with greater demands for state-of-the-art machinery fleets.

Forthe SIMA 2022 exhibition, AMAZONE is extending its range of pneumatic harrow-mounted seed drills with the Centaya 3000 Special. The new model in the Centaya range replaces the AD-P Special harrow-mounted seed drill.

The Centaya Special is offered in hopper sizes of 1,000 l and 1,500 l and with a working width of 3 m. The pneumatic harrow-mounted seed drill can be equipped with the RoTeC single disc coulter or with the TwinTeC Special double disc coulter.

Compact, user-friendly and precise The segmented distributor head on the Centaya Special is mounted behind the seed hopper directly above the coulters. This arrangement ensures a short conveying time for the seed. The hopper is positioned well forward and thus offers an optimum centre of gravity close to the tractor. The distributor head can be reached easily via the loading board and can then be regularly checked. Setting the tramline system is also easy to carry out as a result of the good accessibility.

The low profile of the hopper also gives the driver a better overview of the machine. The very large 2.30 x 0.84 m hopper fill opening enables a quick and convenient fill, not just from big bags, front end loaders, but also from small sacks. The deep hopper tip and steep hopper walls reliably guide the seed corn down to the metering unit. Furthermore, this design means that only small

residual amounts are left in the hopper.

The Centaya Special harrowmounted seed drill is controlled via ISOBUS. The in-house developed AMAZONE software allows intuitive operation by the driver. In combination with the TwinTerminal, the machine can be quickly and simply got ready for drilling.

Smart calibration

Calibration of the seed hopper can be carried out conveniently from the loading board. The easily-accessible metering unit on the bottom of the hopper ensures even seed metering. The seed is gathered in the collection bag supplied and is weighed using the scales that are included as standard.

For other seeds, or different seed rates, AMAZONE offers a variety of different metering cassettes for the Centaya Special. Only two bolts need to be released directly on the metering unit using the tool supplied, in order to change the metering cassettes.

In order to make pre-metering, calibration and residue emptying even easier, AMAZONE offers, for the Centaya Special, in conjunction with the AmaTron 4, the Comfort Pack with its TwinTerminal 3.0. This terminal is fixed in place with a magnet close to the metering unit.

Calibration is therefore carried out directly down on the machine and there is no need to keep getting up and down from the tractor. ISOBUS control of the

seed drill combination can be performed either by the AmaTron 4 or the AmaPad 2 ISOBUS terminals from AMAZONE, or by any other ISOBUS terminal from a third party manufacturer.

Single disc or double disc coulters

The Centaya Special can be equipped either with the RoTeC single disc coulter or with the TwinTeC Special double disc coulter.

RoTeC coulters are maintenancefree and work very reliably, even where large amounts of straw and plant residues are present. The sowing disc and a furrow former create the seed furrow profile and provide optimum seed placement into the soil. The Control 10 depth guidance disc or the Control 25 depth guidance roller prevent the soil from sticking to the sowing disc, thereby ensuring that the pre-selected sowing depth is precisely maintained. Row spacings of 12.5 cm and 15 cm can be chosen.

Equipped with the highperformance TwinTeC Special double disc coulter, the seed drill offers a precise and sturdy double disc coulter. With a disc diameter of 340 mm and a coulter pressure of 40 kg, the coulter provides very precise and neat seed placement, even at higher speeds and on inconsistent soils. Thanks to the trailing depth guide roller, there is always good contact with the soil, so that optimum seed placement is ensured.

EVERYTHING IN ONE PASS WITH THE PRECEA 6000-2AFCC

Amazone:

Precise, intuitive and highly efficient!

AMAZONE

has extended its unique 3-point linkage precision air seeder range with the new Precea 6000-2AFCC. The optimum combination of the robust KG rotary cultivator and the precision air seeder increases performance. Now available in a working width of 6 m and 8 rows, this combination offers farmers and contractors an extremely flexible tool when used in conjunction with the FTender front mounted hopper.

Logically combined

An optimally prepared seedbed with uniform germination conditions is the basis for high field emergence. The robust KG 6002-2 Super rotary cultivator mixes the soil surface leaving it extremely even with its “on-grip” tines. The separation of the coarse clods left on the soil surface and fine soil in the area of the root horizon creates the ideal growing conditions. Forward speeds of up to 12 km/h can be achieved depending on the soil conditions and the working depth, thereby enabling an increase in the performance. The change-over system allows fast conversion from the Precea precision air seeder to the Avant seed rail with RoTeC or TwinTeC coulters. Extended by the FTender for the supply of fertiliser or seed, the solo machines form a highly flexible and extremely manoeuvrable

drill combination. The innumerable application scenarios, and especially the amalgamation of several work steps into one pass, make the Precea 6000-2AFCC an economically-attractive machine.

PreTeC mulch sowing coulter

The newly developed PreTeC mulch sowing coulter can be loaded mechanically with a coulter pressure of up to 220 kg. The hydraulic option enables the pressure to be adjusted up to 350 kg directly from the tractor seat whilst on the move. This ensures smooth running and uniform field emergence when used for both sowing after the plough and when mulch sowing. The coulter unit can be quickly adapted to the specific field requirements without the need for tools. The placement depth can be individually adjusted and the sowing unit moved to the park position via a notched quadrant when the machine is set down. The contact pressure and the opening angle of the V-pressure rollers can also be adjusted very easily without the use of tools. The complete coulter unit is easily accessible and the maintenance-free bearings and bushings are optimally protected from dust.

Precise over-pressure singling system

The singling system in

the Precea is based on overpressure generated by the blower fan. Both the seed hopper and the complete metering unit are subject to an overpressure. The seed is fed from a seed hopper to a singling disc hermetically sealed by the metering unit and pressed onto the holes in the disc. Precise singling is then ensured via the following three stripper fingers. The seed then reaches the propulsion channel, where the contact pressure is stopped and the grain is shot precisely into the seed furrow and caught by the catcher roller. An optical sensor closely monitors the singling process and reports any misses and doubles to the tractor terminal. The stripper system can then be easily adjusted. Fully automatic, electric stripper finger adjustment via SmartControl is another positive development step. FTender mounted front hopper for optimum weight distribution

The Precea 6000-2AFCC model comes with the new FTender front mounted hopper for maximum fertilisation efficiency. Capacities of either 1,600 l or 2,200 l result in less downtime and therefore higher outputs. The FTender is equipped with electric metering drive and is controlled via the ISOBUS terminal as standard.

FORMAN - NSTS MANAGER

Keeping your sprayer in top condition

Safeguarding the environment is so important and there are a range of ways available that sprayer operators can and do use to help avoid unnecessary incidents. With best practice guidelines from NRoSO, along with their annual training events, is a great place to start but lets focus on the annual NSTS test.

A recent presentation by NSTS highlighted to operators and managers the most common faults on sprayers and how quick and easy they are to repair. Many of these common faults relate to leaks and drips, which in time are going to get gradually worse and potentially

pose a risk to the environment. The Operator check sheet, available on the NSTS website, is there to use all year round but also a good guide when preparing the sprayer for test.

One important test the operator can do is run the machine above normal working pressure, say 5 bar, and walk around the sprayer to check for leaks. It is worth doing this both spraying and not spraying (but leaving the pump running) which may show a fault that can be repaired now, rather than it occurring later when you are busy spraying.

Another aspect of the check sheet is somewhere to record a calibration. It is part of crop assurance to carry this out

at least once a year and is of course best practice to check on a regular basis anyway. The NSTS test itself checks forward speed, nozzle spacing and flow rate to give you all the information to work with when carrying out a calibration.

Check sheets are also available for micro-granular applicators and knapsack sprayers, both of which are required to be inspected regularly, but regular inspections of all pesticide application equipment not only aids protecting the environment but should also help towards ensuring availability of plant protection products for the future.

TERRIA WITH FERTILISER EQUIPMENT AND AMICO F

Pottinger: Do it all in a single pass

Stubble cultivators

In future, it will be necessary to deploy resources worldwide even more purpose-specifically and efficiently. That is why PÖTTINGER has teamed up the trailed TERRIA stubble cultivator with the AMICO F front hopper solo for resource-saving work. The tillage and simultaneous fertiliser application steps can now be completed in a single pass.

Working sustainably

The aim of the combined method is to loosen the soil and at the same time apply fertiliser, as it can be made best available to the crop by direct placement in the soil. Nutrient depletion is prevented as a result. Nutrient deficiencies can be precisely compensated in different soil layers using this process. This promotes targeted root growth because the roots are attracted to the fertiliser. A strongly developed root system promotes plant growth and crop density.

Soil cultivation made easy

The TERRIA with fertiliser equipment can be used for both stubble cultivation as well as deep loosening work.

The wide tine spacing of TERRIA stubble cultivators ensures reliable operation even with high volumes of organic matter. The incorporation of harvest residues and cover crops is carried out using different types of share and is possible with wings, the fertiliser boots remain permanently mounted. Different deposit depths for the fertiliser allow different levels of soil to be supplied as needed. A total of three different depths can be set as follows.

Top placement

The outlet on the fertiliser boot is set to 100 percent on top so that the seed is mixed directly into the upper layer of soil approx. 0 to 5 cm deep. The application point is right behind the tine leg for fertilisation, this can be used in the spring when preparing the seedbed. Emission losses are avoided because the fertiliser is immediately covered.

Mixed placement

With 50 percent applied on top and 50 percent at the bottom - placed near the surface and at the point of the coulter. The fertiliser is distributed over the entire working depth, this ideally suited for phosphate

compensation fertilisation. The method is suitable for primary tillage in autumn with working depths from 15 cm.

Bottom placement

The outlet on the fertiliser boot is set to 100 percent at the point of the coulter. This means that fertiliser can be placed further down at up to 35 cm deep. The soil is deeply loosened during this process. Preferably, stabilising nitrogen fertilisers should be used and emission losses are avoided. Additional nutrient deficiencies can be compensated in this way.

AMICO F

The capacity of 1,700 or 2,400 litres and a division of 60:40 ensures a wide range of applications for the front hopper. To ensure convenient operation, the AMICO front hopper is equipped with ISOBUS as standard. The material is applied using a single shoot process with a pressurised hopper system. One or two metering units can be controlled sitespecifically by the intelligent control system. Furthermore, the hopper can also be used no problem together with third-party equipment thanks to the ISOBUS control system.

AVIAN INFLUENZA: UNPRECEDENTED NUMBER OF SUMMER CASES IN EUROPE

An unprecedented number of highly pathogenic avian influezna detections were reported from June to September in Europe

An unprecedented number of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus detections were reported in wild and domestic birds from June to September in Europe, according to the latest overview by EFSA, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, and the EU reference laboratory. In previous years, no cases or only a few cases were detected during the summer period. The overall 2021–2022 HPAI season has produced the largest epidemic so far observed in Europe.

Between 11 June and 9 September 2022, 788 HPAI virus detections were reported in 16 EU/EEA countries and the United Kingdom with 56 in poultry, 22 and 710 in captive and wild birds, respectively. The unusual persistence in wild birds continued throughout the summer and occurred in 15 European countries. The virus reached sea bird breeding colonies on the north Atlantic coast, causing massive mortality, particularly in Germany, France, Netherlands, and the UK.

Heavily infected wild birds presented an ongoing risk of infection for domestic birds too. From June to September, the number of outbreaks in domestic birds declined compared to previous months, but was more than five times higher compared to the same period the year before.

“With cases detected in poultry and wild birds up to September, the current epidemic is clearly still ongoing. As autumn migration begins and the number of wild birds wintering in Europe increases, they are likely at higher risk of HPAI infection than previous years due to the observed persistence of the virus in Europe,” said Guilhem de Seze, Head of the Risk Assessment Production Department at EFSA.

EFSA recommends the rapid implementation of suitable and sustainable HPAI mitigation strategies, including appropriate biosecurity measures and surveillance strategies for early detection. Medium to long-term prevention strategies should be considered in densely

populated areas and in poultry production systems highly susceptible to avian influenza exposure.

The ongoing HPAI season has produced the largest epidemic seen so far in Europe, with a total of 2,467 outbreaks in poultry and 47.7 million birds culled in affected establishments. In addition, 187 detections were notified in captive birds and 3,573 HPAI events were recorded in wild birds. The geographical reach of this year’s epidemic is unprecedented, with reported cases ranging from the Svalbard islands in Norway to southern Portugal, and as far east as Ukraine, affecting 37 European countries in total.

In autumn 2021, the HPAI A(H5N1) virus also crossed the Atlantic Ocean for the first time, spreading from Europe to North America along migration routes and causing a severe epidemic in poultry in several Canadian provinces and US States as well as causing mortality in wild birds.

BFREPA LAUNCHES EGG PLEDGE TO UNITE INDUSTRY

The British Free Range Egg Producers Association is urging all businesses to get involved

The British Free Range Egg Producers Association (BFREPA) is urging all businesses and individuals involved in free range and organic production to sign its new Egg Pledge.

Launched this week at the association’s annual conference in Birmingham, BFREPA wants to unite the sector behind a commitment to work together for a better, more sustainable future.

It comes following a year of campaigning for a fair deal for farmers who have been hit by rocketing costs of production.

Many farms have seen energy bills increase by tens of thousands of pounds while feed costs have risen by 50% or more. Transport, labour and the cost of pullets have all gone up too, leaving producers struggling to make a profit, or in the worst cases, ceasing production altogether.

Industry predictions are that egg supply will continue to tighten this winter, leading to shortages.

BFREPA CEO Robert Gooch said: “This year the inflationary pressures we have all seen in our daily lives has been affecting farmers badly, particularly poultry farms which have birds to feed every day.

“Many free range and organic egg enterprises

sustainability.”

Any individual or business can sign the pledge, with their commitment documented on www. bfrepa.co.uk/eggpledge

BFREPA will be approaching all packers, retailers, food businesses and politicians to ask for their support. Anyone signing the pledge will be kept updated about its progress and given the opportunity to engage by adding support or expertise when issues affecting the sector arise.

decided to pause production or give up altogether as a result. Yet consumers still want eggs so eventually there will be a shortfall.

“These are difficult times and it would be very easy for an industry to fragment, rather than work together.

“The Egg Pledge we are launching today is part of BFREPA’s effort to unite the industry, enabling it to focus on a common objective – long term success and

“It is imperative farmers can continue to produce a high quality, high welfare, nutritious and versatile protein for consumers, which is why we’re asking for the public and industry’s support,” Gooch said.

“By signing the pledge, you are showing your support for British free range and organic egg producers and playing a part in ensure they have a sustainable future.”

DACIA DUSTER COMMERCIAL IS MORE ATTRACTIVE THAN EVER TO BUSINESSES

Conversion sees rear seats removed, replaced with flat load floor, mesh bulkhead. load cover, opaque window film and security alarm

Dacia

Duster Commercial is the latest model to feature the brand’s new visual identity

Based on the rugged Duster SUV, the specially converted Duster Commercial offers up to 1,623 litres of useful volume and up to 503kg of payload capacity

Conversion sees rear seats removed, replaced with flat load floor, mesh bulkhead, load cover, opaque window film, and security alarm

Availability of dual-clutch automatic EDC gearbox and fourwheel-drive All-wheel-drive version is the UK’s most affordable and best value 4x4 LCV

Choice of Essential and Expression trim levels Three-year, 60,000-mile warranty with three-year roadside cover as standard

Orders open now, with prices starting from £13,995 excluding VAT

The Dacia Duster Commercial has been enhanced with the brand’s bold new visual identity, adding to the model’s proven appeal to hard-working businesses that require a quality, robust vehicle that offers outstanding value.

Beyond a simple shift in design, the new identity builds on the strongly held values that are behind the Dacia success story. By applying this identity to the Dacia Duster Commercial, Dacia is extending its commitment to business customers, as well as retail car buyers, bringing even

more versatility and capability to an already practical package.

The Dacia Link emblem, a strong feature of the brand’s new identity, now features front and centre in the middle of the grille, itself redesigned and now in white. Like the links of a chain, the interlocking ‘D’ and ‘C’ contribute to a brand-new emblem that reflects the robust simplicity of the new design. The emblem also features on the centre of each wheel.

Another visible change is the addition of the logo on the rear panel and steering wheel. The minimal design sees the lettering pared back so only the essentials remain, enough being left to clearly distinguish each letter.

The new visual identity adds to the many attributes already offered by the Duster Commercial. Based on the Duster SUV, it is homologated as an N1 commercial version, building on the Duster’s rugged and resilient nature by adding a tough, hardwearing flat load area, offering 1,623 litres of space and up to 503kg payload capacity.

It is powered by a range of punchy yet efficient petrol and diesel engines, complete with the option of Dacia’s dual-clutch EDC automatic transmission. For the more adventurous tradesperson, farmer, or utility company that needs to access remote areas, a four-wheel-drive model offers genuine go-anywhere capability.

For simplicity, two trim levels –Essential and Expression – bring

the same generous equipment to the Duster Commercial as the Duster SUV, including an 8-inch touchscreen boasting Dacia’s Media Display infotainment system complete with both Android Auto® and Apple CarPlay®.

PRACTICAL AND SPACIOUS CARGO AREA

The conversion takes place right at the factory, with experienced Dacia technicians replacing the rear seats of the Duster with a completely flat wooden load floor covered with a hard-wearing surface. A sturdy mesh bulkhead safely separates the load area from the front passenger compartment, while a series of lashing eyes make it easy to secure loose cargo.

A full-length removable load cover keeps the cargo bay’s contents shielded from prying eyes, aided by the opaque film applied to the fixed rear windows. Finally, rubber mats and a builtin alarm system round out the protection measures.

With up to 1,623 litres of cargo space on offer, the Duster Commercial is a natural fit for hard-working trades. The absence of a load sill makes accessing the space easy and, with a bay length of 1,792mm, even the longest loads can be accommodated with ease. A generous load width of 1,247mm and a floor-to-ceiling height on the 4x2 models of 917mm means bulky items can be easily transported too. Meanwhile, a maximum payload of up to 503kg (depending on model) ensures

DACIA DUSTER COMMERCIAL IS MORE ATTRACTIVE THAN EVER TO BUSINESSES

The Dacia Duster Commercial has been enhanced with the brand’s bold new visual identity

the Duster Commercial is ready for a day’s work no matter how much is being asked of it.

BOLD EXTERIOR DESIGN

The Duster Commercial shares the same tough and ready-foranything styling as the Duster SUV.

Flared wheel-arches matched with durable skid plates, front and rear, emphasise the Duster Commercial’s outdoor spirit, while the availability of alloy wheels and a choice of seven appealing paintwork colours –including the new Dusty Grey – brings an added sense of adventure. As well as a distinctive grille design, the front-end styling also includes Y-shaped LED running lights.

Contrasting black roof bars add to the Duster Commercial’s practicality, backed up by its 210mm of ground clearance and 450mm wading depth.

EFFICIENT ENGINES

The Duster Commercial features a range of proven and efficient petrol and diesel engines with outputs from 90hp to 150hp, covering a choice of two- or four-wheel-drive configurations. A six-speed manual transmission is fitted as standard, while Dacia’s six-speed dual-clutch EDC transmission is available exclusively with the TCe 150 engine.

The petrol range includes the turbocharged three-cylinder 1.0-litre TCe 90, delivering 90hp and 160Nm of torque at 2,750rpm, with combined cycle

economy of up to 45.6mpg (WLTP). It also encompasses the TCe 150, coupled exclusively with Dacia’s six-speed dualclutch EDC transmission. Despite its 0-62mph acceleration time of 9.7 seconds, the TCe 150 still returns the same 45.6mpg (WLTP) economy as its petrolpowered siblings.

The 1.5-litre Blue dCi diesel engine develops 115hp and 260Nm of torque at 2,000rpm, and is available with the choice of either two- or four-wheeldrive. The Blue dCi 115 4x2 offers impressive fuel economy of 57.6mpg (WLTP) and low CO2 emissions of just 127g/ km, while the 4x4 version emits 139g/km and achieves a creditable 53.3mpg (WLTP) on the combined cycle.

All are compliant with the latest Euro 6D-Full emissions regulations and are equipped with Stop & Start – which automatically turns the engine off at a standstill to reduce emissions and boost fuel economy – as standard.

SIMPLIFIED TWO-MODEL RANGE

The New Duster Commercial is available in two wellequipped, simple-to-understand specifications.

As standard, the Duster Commercial Essential features Dacia’s distinctive Y-shaped LED daytime running lights, body-coloured bumpers, black roof bars with ‘Duster’ inscription, 16-inch steel wheels, air conditioning, electric front

windows, cruise control with speed limiter, seven-function on-board computer, height- and reach-adjustable steering wheel with backlit controls, DAB radio with Bluetooth connectivity and a USB connection.

Moving up to the Expression specification adds 16-inch alloy wheels, body-colour door handles, front fog lights, heated and electrically adjustable door mirrors, rear-view camera with parking sensors, hill descent control, and a centre differential lock on 4x4 models. The interior, meanwhile, gains upgraded upholstery, black door sill protection strips, leather steering wheel, centre console with driver’s armrest, heightadjustable driver’s seat with lumbar adjustment, and Dacia’s Media Display infotainment system with 8-inch touchscreen, smartphone replication with both Android Auto® and Apple CarPlay®, and two USB ports.

Both Essential and Expression models are offered with a spare wheel as an available option (4x2 versions only), while metallic paint in one of four colours –Pearl Black, Arizona Orange, Slate Grey and Iron Blue – can be specified across the range. For those with an adventurous spirit, the new Dusty Grey colour is also available alongside the Urban Grey.

The latest version of the Dacia Duster Commercial is available to order now starting at £13,995 excluding VAT, with first deliveries due in the last quarter of 2022.
