CAN-AM COMMENT ON NFU MUTUAL RURAL CRIME REPORT

ATV’s and SSV’s are viewed by criminals as easy to steal, and when transported to different countries, they are easily sold on to unsuspecting users

A

TVs and SSVs are viewed by criminals as easy to steal, and when they are transported to other countries, they are easily sold onto unsuspecting users however, for the owners they are a vital part of modern farming. So when they are stolen it impacts on the work that can be carried out and puts undue financial pressure on the farm/user when it comes to replacing the vehicle.

security for users' vehicles. With key cloning being a major issue in ATV theft, we have developed our Digitally Encoded Security System (DESS) to reduce the risk of theft via this method. The system utilises electronic key codes that are required to match each specific ATV’s engine control module (ECM), which means the machine will not start unless the coded microchip in the key matches the preinstalled code.

As a business, we understand the impact the theft has on the consumer and the industry as a whole. So to see there has been a rise in the cost of ATV/SSV theft to the UK from £2.6 to £3.1m is disappointing. This rise is something we as an industry should be looking to tackle head on through continued investment in vehicle security and ongoing work with consumers, police forces, tracking system providers and insurers on ways to deal with the problem.

In addition to our own security system, we understand the importance of tracking systems that need to be fitted to the vehicles, so if they are stolen they can be recovered.

As a brand, we are committed to providing our customers with highquality security solutions and access to partners that will also assist in providing

To address this we have partnered with the market leader in this area, DATATAG, and at all our dealerships its tracking systems are installed on site before the Can-Am vehicles leave the workshop. Credit to: Anita Gobbo Regional Commercial Manager, Sales.

STORM BOARD OFFERS CASH-SAVING ALTERNATIVE FOR LIVESTOCK FARMERS Pioneering plastic recycling company Storm Board: Recycled plastic alternative to cheap plywood brings long-term savings

R

ecycled plastic alternative to cheap plywood brings longterm savings Pioneering plastic recycling company Storm Board is helping to improve the sustainability of the agriculture market with the supply of its products to farmers and businesses. The Storm Board product is a recycled-plastic alternative to plywood, and is being increasingly used on livestock farms due to its durability, insulation properties and easy clean surface. In addition to being made from recycled materials, as an alternative to plywood the product has other sustainability benefits. There are well documented environmental concerns around the production of plywood including the deforestation of tropical areas in Asia and South America*,

harmful emissions and pollutants in the manufacturing process plus the carbon footprint it creates by huge delivery journeys to the UK from all over the world. David and Jacqui Browne, third generation dairy farmers from Pomeroy Farm on the Wiltshire-Somerset border, use Storm Board for a variety of purposes within their operation. From lining calf pens to covering the walls surrounding their milking equipment, the couple have found a range of uses for the product. Jacqui Vigor said, “We have found Storm Board to be incredibly useful for a variety of purposes around the farm, but particularly in high traffic areas such as the milking and feeding stations. The easy clean surface is a real help, and the fact that it will never need replacing is a major bonus for us.

“We’re gradually increasing its usage in other outbuildings helping to keep them clean and tidy. The sustainability credentials are also attractive to us as we look for ways to run more economically and ecologically.” Storm Board business owner Nick Stillwell says agriculture currently makes up around 40 per cent of his customer base and that the product can bring savings in the long term to farmers. He said, “At Storm Board we’re showing that plastic can be recycled into quality, hardwearing products that can be used for a wide range of purposes including farming. “Rather than continually spending out on and building with more plywood, which has a finite lifespan and environmental impact, our agriculture customers have realised the numerous benefits of using recycled plastic instead.”

KIOTI: TRACTOR MODELS PREPARED FOR THE FUTURE With the introduction of the environmental stage V engine standards for all tractors above 25HP, Kioti range is ready to lead the way

W

ith The introduction of the environmental Stage V engine standards for all tractors above 25HP the Kioti range of tractors is ready to move forward and lead the way. The change will see the introduction of a number of new exciting models. Kioti have many years of experience using the required technology. The first Compact tractor models using Common rail engines above 50HP with DPF were introduced in 2012. Kioti Engines have been running to quiet, economical and environmental friendly standards since this time. For Kioti the new enhanced

regulations are just a small step not the radical change required for other competitive makes. As a brief outline a new model CK2630, using the reliable Kioti 3A165 engine will be introduced offering a tractor with a physical presence relative to its size, i.e. the same as the existing CK3510 / 4010 but running at 25 Horse power to keep the purchase price lower. Making a useful addition to the models offered from Kioti The New CK30 series tractors will range from 35 to 50 horse power. In this tractor range ROPS and factory cabin versions will be available as well as mechanical and HST transmissions.

The larger DK tractor model range will also grow. Currently HST transmission is available only on the 60HP ROPS and Cabin models. New HST 45 and 50 HP models will be available from late 2020 / early 2021. The cabin will be the spacious and quiet factory cabin that you expect from a Kioti Product. Enhanced lift capacity will also feature giving 1700kg lift at the link arm ends. As well as the changes to the engines Kioti have taken the opportunity to enhance the basic specification for these new models.

NEW PARASITE TRACKER FROM BOEHRINGER HIGHLIGHTS GUTWORM

New parasite tracker from Boehringer highlights high gutworm but low liver fluke exposure in cattle this grazing season

A

new parasite tracking initiative from Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health UK is reporting an increase in exposure to the gutworm Ostertagia ostertagi in cattle over the 2020 grazing season, across England, Wales, and Scotland. The tracker has also indicated that liver fluke exposure is currently low, except for a hot spot in south west Scotland. The company’s Senior Brand Manager, Victoria Hudson, explains that the data collected from 90 dairy farms in Great Britain in association with National Milk Laboratories, is helping to track parasite risks and provide more specific guidance to livestock producers, animal health advisors, and vets on monitoring and treating parasites. She says: “Our data is collected from ELISA bulk milk tests from dairy farms, but we expect this information will be of use to all livestock producers due to the prevalence of liver fluke and Ostertagia ostertagi across Great Britain. When bulk milk tank antibodies to these parasites become elevated it provides an indication of regional risk that is relevant to other cattle producers, and the liver fluke results will also be relevant to sheep producers.

“We hope when this data is used in combination with parasite forecasts, farmspecific conditions, and herd history, livestock producers, animal health advisors and vets will be able to make better-informed decisions on parasite monitoring and control.”

It is a different story for liver fluke where the majority of herds remain classed as negative, with 68% presenting no or very low levels of antibody in a bulk milk sample. However, a small number of herds tested positive, primarily in the westerly areas of Great Britain.

Data to the end of August 2020 showed that around 80% of tested herds now have high levels of Ostertagia ostertagi antibody in a bulk milk sample, which indicated high exposure to this worm during the grazing season.

“Dairy farmers in westerly areas of England, Wales and Scotland that haven’t treated herds for liver fluke this year should consider performing a diagnostic test to determine whether chronic fluke infection established in 2019 is impacting on the farm’s productivity,” says Sioned.

“This highlights the potential risk that Ostertagia ostertagi may pose to cattle of all ages grazing in all regions of Great Britain,” says Boehringer’s Ruminant Technical Manager, Sioned Timothy. “Dairy herds that have not treated for worms during the grazing season should consider testing a bulk milk sample. In addition, producers should be mindful that the warm and wet autumn weather will promote ongoing larval activity on the pasture, and could leave youngstock at ongoing risk of parasitic gastroenteritis,” warns Sioned. Producers can request a bulk milk test through their vet or animal health advisor.

“There is some evidence that antibody levels are increasing in these regions. This is most notable in south west Scotland. Livestock in this area are potentially being exposed to infective fluke on the pasture and as a result, there may be a risk of acute fluke disease in sheep. “While acute fluke disease is less common in cattle, beef and dairy producers should still be alert to the potential for lost productivity in infected cattle, as infections become established.” Cattle and sheep producers are urged to speak to their vet or animal health advisor for advice.

MAINTAIN COW SELENIUM STATUS TO HELP REDUCE SCC LEVELS NEW G

Dairy farmers are being urged to maximise their contract returns by continuing to product low somatic cell count (SCC) milk which protects the epithelial cells in the mammary gland from oxidative stress. And research has clearly shown the beneficial effect of ensuring the selenium levels supplied are adequate, within recommendations and that the source of the trace element is of high quality.”

M

aintain cow selenium status to help reduce SCC levels and offsetthe effect of falling farmgate milk returns With UK farmgate milk prices maintaining a downward trend since the start of 2020, dairy farmers are being urged to maximise their contract returns by continuing to produce low somatic cell count (SCC) milk. And feeding protected selenium can help, says a nutrition expert. “Milk buyers penalise you for high SCC milk, which can be an indication of sub-clinical mastitis, so it makes sense to continually manage your herd to minimise this potential loss of income. It pays to target less than 100,000 cells per ml of milk year-round, which indicates disease-free status and secures your payment bonuses,” says ruminant specialist Jacob Lakin from

Azelis Animal Nutrition. However, he explains that alongside the immune status of the cow, many factors can influence SCCs, including breed, stage of lactation, body condition score, parity, seasonality, milking hygiene and even poor nutrition. “Consequently, dairy farmers must employ an integrated strategy to reduce mastitis incidence and high SCCs – and effective breeding, husbandry, disease management, nutrition and milking routine hygiene are all important,” he says. Mr Lakin says that maintaining an adequate selenium status is particularly important as milking herds move into the early winter feeding period. “Dairy cows have a selenodependent enzyme known as glutathione peroxidase,

He explains that feeding a high-quality selenium enriched yeast, such as Plexomin Se 2300ppm – with a large part of the mineral supply coming from organic selenomethionine – will definitely help as part of a multi-faceted approach to help keep bulk milk tank SCCs below the crucial 100,000 cells per ml threshold. What’s more, he adds that in high SCC cows, milk yield and composition can also be adversely affected to deliver a ‘double whammy’ of lost returns. “A reduction in milk yield is often associated with an increase in mastitis severity. When mastitis develops milk lactose concentration drops, which results in a lower output. This yield reduction is also associated with the damage caused to the epithelial cells of the mammary gland, so any nutritional support that can help to offset this process is well worth considering,” he says.

NEW G SERIES LAUNCHES THE 5TH GENERATION OF VALTRA TRACTORS

The G Series is the first in the 5th generation of Valtra tractors and at the same time a brand-new model series thats fit between A & N Series

T

he G Series is the first in the 5th generation of Valtra tractors and at the same time a brand-new model series that fits between the popular A and N Series. The G Series is also the first tractor in the 100–145 hp range to offer SmartTouch controls as well as full precision farming capabilities. As a result, the popular SmartTouch armrest is now available on all Valtra tractors in the 100–400 hp range. Valtra Connect telemetry is also standard on Versu models of the G Series, while powerful loadsensing hydraulics are standard on Active and Versu models. The new G Series is available in four equipment levels: Basic, Comfort, Technology and Technology Pro. Customers will also be able to order their Finnish-made G Series tractors with tailored features from the Unlimited Studio at the factory. THE NEW VALTRA G SERIES IS EASY TO OPERATE, MAINTAIN AND PURCHASE. “The G Series is typically an all-purpose farm tractor that can be used for front-loader tasks, spraying, producing feed and cultivating vegetables using smart farming techniques, for example. Operating an all-purpose tractor like this should be easy and safe with comfortable working conditions, a powerful front linkage and hydraulics, and excellent visibility. Altogether, the G Series is compact but still powerful,” says

Mikko Lehikoinen, Vice President, Sales and Marketing. The new Valtra G Series is easy to operate, maintain and purchase. It has been engineered for demanding front-loader tasks, and the starting point for its design was to offer the best visibility and comfort. It can be specified according to individual needs, its running costs can be predicted precisely thanks to adapted financing solutions and service contracts. Valtra’s aftersales Connect, Care and Go services make using the tractor predictable and carefree. Modern and spacious cab The G Series has a modern and spacious cab with 5.7 square metres of glass, including 0.35 square metres in the panoramic roof. Cab suspension further enhances comfort along with heated mirrors, air conditioning, a lower cab heater and USB charging plugs that are available with the auxiliary power pack. Versu models with the SmartTouch interface can access the same SmartFarming features as the bigger N and T Series models. Active models are also available with autoguidance and precision farming features that can be activated via the SmartTouch Extend terminal. The G Series has been designed to be the ideal tractor for frontloader tasks. It offers excellent visibility, good weight distribution, front-loader that is integrated with the chassis, a hydraulics assistant that automatically increases the engine speed, and the Live 3 feature, which

enables the simultaneous use of up to three different front-loader functions. In addition to field and farmyard tasks, the G Series is also suitable for forestry tasks – as Valtra tractors always have been. For forestry tasks, the G Series can be specified with narrow mudguards, a steel fuel tank, polycarbonate glass, forest tyres, a rotating seat and cab protection. The auxiliary light pack provides four working lights at the front and six at the rear, which also turn on automatically when reversing, facilitating work in dark conditions. Versatile transmission for a wide range of tasks The G Series has a 24+24R transmission with four ranges and six Powershift gears. The shifts from B to C range and between C and D ranges are automated, making it even easier to operate the tractor, especially on roads. In traditional Valtra fashion, the parking brake is integrated with the forward-reverse shuttle lever, and the driver can also programme the transmission settings. The slowest working speed with the creeper gear is just 120 metres per hour, which is ideal for cultivating vegetables, for example. Versu models can be operated using just the drive lever, and other models also do not require much use of the clutch pedal thanks to AutoTraction. The hillhold function keeps the tractor stationary even on steep hills without having to use the brakes.

THE SIMPLICITY OF GENIUS

Experience the new Valtra generation The fifth generation of Valtra tractors combine agility, power and smart farming technologies. The brand new Valtra G Series gives you complete control over your work. It’s tough outside and smart inside. It’s compact, it’s agile and it’s built for you. Simply Genius.

WATER RESOURCES: WHY THEY ARE FUNDAMENTAL FOR THE FUTURE Water resources: Why they are fundamental for the future of agriculture

R

isorse idriche agricoltura Phenomena such as waves of drought and rising temperatures will become increasingly frequent in the coming years due to climate change. In different areas of the world they are already a current reality and make it increasingly challenging to engage in agricultural activities at the levels of the past. Moreover, phenomena such as population growth, urbanisation and pollution do not make the situation any easier. In this panorama, water resources become a particularly precious commodity, to be exploited carefully and more and more efficiently in order to satisfy all the uses that are made of them. Water is in fact necessary for alimentary uses, but also for industry, tourism and agriculture. Agriculture in Europe is the sector that uses the most water resources, accounting for about 40% of the resources used each year (as detailed in this article on the use of European water resources). With the ever-increasing demand for water, it is necessary to find solutions to meet the needs of people, the economy and nature. In some regions, especially during the summer months, there is not

enough water to meet the demand of everyone. This is why organisations such as the European Union encourage a range of actions for the careful and sustainable use of water resources. Let us look at this in greater detail. How agriculture affects the use of water resources The European Environment Agency estimates that approximately one third of Europe’s territory is exposed to water stress conditions, which can become particularly severe during the summer. The greatest risk concerns the Mediterranean countries, but the problem of water scarcity is beginning to affect some regions of Great Britain and Germany. Despite significant improvements in the efficiency of water use in recent years, agriculture continues to be primarily responsible for water use. In spring, the incidence rate of this sector can reach up to 60% of European

water consumption, due to the large amount of water needed to support fruit and vegetable production. For this reason, it is expected that the cost of irrigation could increase in the coming years, especially if the forecast of reduced rainfall due to climate change should become a reality. Not to be underestimated is the fact that during the summer months another key sector such as tourism competes with agriculture for water demand.

ALL GOOD THINGS COME IN THREES: TRIPLE-SHOOT WITH THE CIRRUS-CC

Amazone: Professional crop production os faced with ever greater challenges.

T

he withdrawal of individual plant protection agents along with increasing resistance as well as extreme climatic events such as severe drought, are just a few examples which have a significant impact on agriculture. This means that the demands on modern seeding systems are continuously growing. Precise seed metering and exact depth placement therefore have top priority when it comes to ensuring high yields and part-area, site-specific sowing and automatic switching on and off at the headland are also increasingly gaining in importance. Furthermore, there is a particular focus on the simultaneous application of several seed types or fertiliser as well as the addition of companion plants and undersown crops. This flexibility can be implemented to perfection with the new Cirrus-CC universal sowing combination. Sowing without limits The Cirrus-CC is equipped with a twin outlet, pressurised hopper and a second conveying system that feeds the supplementary FerTeC single-disc fertiliser coulters. If the new GreenDrill 501 universal catch crop seeder box is also used, up to three different materials can be

applied simultaneously, and independently of each other, at different placement depths in the so-called triple-shoot process. This seeding system provides the user with a variety of agronomical benefits. Companion plants and undersown crops are beneficial for weed suppression and erosion control as well as biodiversity and the Triple-shoot process enables the placement of three different seed types in one pass: Rape is sown in the upper horizon as a main cash crop e.g. via the TwinTeC+ double disc coulter. Field beans are placed deeper via the FerTeC single disc coulter and serve as a means of fixing nitrogen. Companion plants can be sown on the surface as a third medium via the GreenDrill seed baffle plates. As an alternative, two seed types with fertiliser can also be applied at three different levels: In this case, a small quantity of fertiliser is placed directly by the grain via the sowing coulter in the single-shoot process. This greatly supports seedling development. Fertiliser is also placed in the deeper soil horizon between the seed rows via the FerTeC singledisc coulter by double-shoot, in order to stimulate root

growth. This offset placement means that fertiliser can be used more precisely ensuring a more comprehensive supply to the plant. A companion plant is sown by the tripleshoot method via the GreenDrill. This gives the farmer or contractor great flexibility in combining seed and fertiliser. Easy handling The metering units in the twin outlet hopper and the GreenDrill can be calibrated very easily without constant climbing up and down by means of the optional TwinTerminal 3.0 fitted on the machine or via the mySeeder App. The application rates and speeds are clearly displayed on the Amazone AmaTron 4 ISOBUS terminal and the driver can change the seed rate from the tractor seat during work without any problems. Part-area, site-specific precision management When using application maps, all three hoppers can be individually controlled thanks to the MultiBin function and the application rates of the respective materials independently varied in partarea zones. The automatic GPS-Switch provides delayed switching at the headland for each material via the MultiBoom function.

JOHN DEERE: DATA TRANSFER FOR MIXED FLEETS

Today’s farmers have to collect data to manage their farm, with the ISOXML it’s possible to transfer field data to the operations centre

T

oday’s farmers have to collect a large amount of data to manage their farm and for documentation requirements. With the ISOXML standard it’s possible to transfer field data from machine displays of the most popular manufacturers to the John Deere Operations Centre. In this way, John Deere is able to support customers that work with mixed equipment fleets. Data commonly recorded by farm machinery includes field borders, application rates and crop yields, with the information helping farmers to operate more efficiently, cost-effectively and sustainably. However, customers with mixed fleets have often failed to successfully transfer and merge such data into as few software solutions as possible in the office. The John Deere Operations Centre enables farmers and contractors to exchange different data formats, and there are several ways to transfer data from the machine to the Operations Centre:

without any additional costs. Depending on the application, the data can be viewed in the Operations Centre in almost real time and work progress can be measured. Alternatively, the operator can use a USB stick. ● Field data from machine displays that use the ISOXML format can be transferred to the Operations Centre from the beginning of August, but a USB stick is needed for the exchange. Historical machine data can also be included if still present, for example when stored on a computer. ● Proprietary data from other machine displays can be sent to the Operations Centre via a USB stick. In addition, data can be exchanged via a smartphone using a dedicated memory stick. The data can be forwarded from the phone to the Operations Centre using the John Deere MyTransfer app.

● Manual documentation of field work is also possible. This helps for example when collecting information from machines without a ● John Deere machines documentation are connected directly and function, or if wirelessly with the Operations the driver has Centre via JDLink Connect, forgotten to

start the documentation process. In this case, all data can be typed into the MyOperations app on the smartphone. Manual documentation via the app is currently available for soil preparation, drilling and crop care applications such as fertilising and spraying, with harvesting data to follow shortly. In addition to seasonal machine documentation, the Operations Centre user receives a comprehensive digital field book. Customers can view and manage all data from any location using a computer browser or smartphone. The John Deere Operations Centre and MyOperations smartphone app are free of charge. In addition, the exchange of data from various sources does not involve any fees for farmers or contractors. John Deere dealers can provide further information on compatible displays plus the various data formats and transmission options available.

JCB, the world’s number one backhoe loader manufacturer, has launched a new 55KW 3CX backhoe loader with EU stage V compliant engine

T

he machine delivers improved operator comfort and ease of use, increased productivity and performance, combined with reduced total cost of ownership. Features include: · Revised Command Plus Cab · Enhanced safety including integrated LED beacons and step lighting · Efficiency boost – a 3.0-litre Stage V engine delivers 10% torque increase and 7% fuel saving · Increased productivity with auto-levelling, auto seat select and auto-2WD This latest JCB 3CX takes the backhoe loader into a new decade, with a smart new look that features a revised Command Plus cab. There are four LED beacons integrated into the cab roof as standard, removing the need for magnetic beacons or drilling of the machine. The beacons can be clearly seen from all angles, improving site safety, while there is no requirement for the operator to have to climb up in the cold and wet to install beacons at the start of the day. The Command Plus cab features yellow grab handles, for a clear touch point and there are larger mirrors for an improved view behind the machine when manoeuvring around site or when roading. Revised square work lights offer increased adjustment and the LED option now includes up to 10 lights, providing maximum illumination of the working area.

The cab interior provides a new level of comfort and usability. It features a split colour line, with darker grey used for the lower half and a lighter grey in the upper half of the cabin. This adds to the airy, spacious feel, providing the operator with a calm, comfortable working environment. There is a new seat, with a dark fabric and yellow stitching and a headrest is available on the Advanced Easy Control (AEC) model. A revised three-spoke steering wheel provides an improved view of the new front display screen, which comes as standard on the latest 3CX. The screen shows the speedometer, all warning lights and the selected gear on Powershift models. For the first time JCB will also supply a factory-fit radio with Bluetooth telephone compatibility and USB, AUX and SD card capabilities. The radio is integrated into the headliner, but can be controlled by a rotary switch in the side console. Audio and telephone functions are also displayed in the new 7” side display screen. This side screen provides the operator with increased functionality and increased information. The display is controlled by an automotive-style rotary switch, that provides quick access to the various operating menus. Increased Productivity The 55kW Stage V 3CX introduces a range of advanced automation features, designed to reduce operator fatigue and to boost productivity. This includes

The shut-down delay can be pre-set or adjusted by the operator through the side screen in the cab. Auto Seat Select is available on machines equipped with servo lever control and automatically recognises which direction the seat is facing, eliminating the need to select functions as the operator changes from front to rear facing positions. Also available on servo models, automatic stabilisers now offer not just an auto-raise function, but also an automatic extend setting, stopping as the feet make contact with the ground. Automatic levelling lets the machine rapidly find a horizontal operating position on uneven ground. Auto Drive has been improved, allowing the operator to automatically select a chosen engine speed when travelling on the road. Operation has been made easier with a new lever mounted beneath the direction selection control. To reduce unnecessary tyre wear and fuel consumption, the 3CX now comes with Auto 2WD. This switches the transmission from 4WD to 2WD when the additional traction is no longer required.

The staff and their contacts, all working at the company’s turkey processing facility in Holton, near Halesworth, are now self-isolating at home and being supported by Bernard Matthews and public sector agencies. Bernard Matthews has had extensive controls in place to manage and reduce COVID-19 infections since March 2020. These are continuing and include regular temperature checks, staff working in bubbles,

COVID marshals, masks and visors and social distancing throughout the site. Approximately 100 members of staff have been tested, with most returning negative results. Additional testing is taking place this week. Food production and safety is unaffected by these cases being identified. Officials from Suffolk County Council, Public Health Suffolk, Public Health England, Public Health Norfolk, East Suffolk Council, Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group and Bernard Matthews are working together to manage the situation.

It is understood that of the 18 employees who have tested positive, and who are now self-isolating, the majority live in the Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft areas. A spokesperson for Bernard Matthews said: “We are grateful for the help of all local agencies and we fully support their objectives to protect the local community. We believe these small number of cases were initiated in the community, but nevertheless we will continue to enforce our robust COVID measures as we enter into our busiest period of the year.”

STEVE BIRCHALL FOUNDER AND OWNER OF STEVE BIRCHALL POULTRY SERVICES

“It’s not the most glamourous job, but we take price in what we do and the end result is rewarding” WHAT IS YOUR JOB IN A NUTSHELL? I am the founder and owner of Steve Birchall Poultry Services and I have three teams who travel the country cleaning all types of poultry houses. We even strip wash and rebuild traditional free range units, sell second hand diesel washers and supply a range of government approved soaps and disinfectants to your customers. HOW DID YOU END UP WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

At a young age I was always on my grandad’s allotment, after school and at weekends helping out, or as he would call it “being a pain”. I had a fascination with the fancy fowl he kept; he taught me the basics, taught me to care.

at christmas. Working with Shaver breeds and broilers for Moy Park, I was farm manager for the last 8 years of my employment there.

So, in 1970 aged 15 and much to my dad’s disapproval, I left secondary school and went to start my working life at Maple Leaf Hatcheries in Lancashire, I attended Hutton Agricultural College on day release. Maple Leaf was local and to this day I still live in the area. I started work on one of their breeder sites and continued with the same company for the next 15 years.

During my time at Maple Leaf, I got to know many poultry farmers and one asked me if I fancied washing his poultry house for him. And so it began. I invested in a small van and with a 1500psi electric washer, off I went. As i got busier, I started to employ people to help. In the beginning it was mainly broiler sites but the expansion of traditional free-range and now multi-tier systems means those now make up most of our customer base.

I worked on caged sites, broiler sites, rearing farms and even did turkeys

In 1985, Maple Leaf closed and I was made redundant.

We travel all over the country keeping the poultry industry clean.

POULTRY MEAT PRODUCERS CANNOT AFFORD BORDER DELAYS

Poultry meat producers cannot afford border delays, after Michael Gove letter reveals worst case scenario

I

n response to the letter from Michael Gove to trade bodies, the British Poultry Council has warned that British poultry meat producers cannot afford to face border delays on day one. With less than 100 days until Britain leaves the single market and customs union, the British poultry meat industry that is heavily reliant on ‘justin-time’ trade with the EU is seriously concerned about urgent business critical issues that Government has failed to answer. In a leaked letter, Gove told trade bodies that queues of up to 7,000 lorries in a worst case scenario after the Brexit transition period ends. The transition period expires at the end of the year. In the letter Gove says between 30-50% of trucks crossing the Channel will not be ready and a “lack of capacity to hold unready trucks at French ports” could reduce the flow of traffic to 60-80% of normal levels. “This could lead to maximum queues of 7,000 port bound trucks in Kent and associated maximum delays of up to two days,” the document says. British Poultry Council, Chief Executive, Richard Griffiths, said: “British poultry meat producers cannot be ready for

the end of the transition period while Government is failing to answer fundamental questions on the detail of trade. We simply have not been told what the right paperwork is or some of the detail of what it should contain. To avoid any disruption at the borders we urgently need answers from Government on the scenario that we should be preparing for. Taking back control should not mean penalising British producers and undermine our national food security. “We are extremely concerned about the current lack of clarity with regards to the structure of our future trading arrangement with the EU – we must know if we are working towards a free trade agreement, or one based on WTO terms. Businesses cannot proceed while uncertainty about our direction of travel continues, and we foresee huge disruption at our borders particularly in the movement of food. “While we welcome the prioritisation of our highvalue breeding stock such as day-old chicks, we remain seriously concerned about the lack of prioritisation of other highly perishable products including fresh poultry meat and hatching eggs. We want to work closely with the Government over the coming months to ensure poultry meat businesses have got all the answers they need to be

fully prepared for the changes ahead.” Business critical issues that require urgent answers from the Government: The imposition of veterinary and documentary checks and physical inspections on large volumes of fresh/chilled poultry meat must be kept to a minimum to facilitate trade and minimise compliance costs. Urgent clarification is needed on the ID mark for Northern Ireland so that businesses can be ready to use the new mark on 1st January 2021 and buy packaging with long lead in times. In addition to using up old stocks of packaging, businesses must also be able to place on the GB market goods held in cold storage at the end of the transition period carrying the UK/EC ID mark for a period 21 months. Businesses in NI must have the similar 21-month transition period to use up existing packaging and also place on the market goods held in cold storage at the end of the transition period or they will be at a huge disadvantage. Businesses need urgent clarity on the definition of ‘goods placed on the market’.

BUILDING A BENCHMARK FOR DAIRY TECHNICIANS

Enrolment for the Milking Equipment Association (MEA) backed Parlour Safe courses have been announced recognised by The Institution of Agricultural Engineers (IAgrE). “The course is practical but there is also a focus on a strong theoretical understanding of different dairying scenarios. Our aim is that soon these courses will become mandatory like those associated with spraying,” says Reaseheath course tutor, Michael Cullen.

E

nrolment for the Milking Equipment Association (MEA) backed Parlour Safe courses has been announced. The courses start in October at Hartpury and Reaseheath colleges to offer participants an opportunity to improve their theoretical and practical understanding of dairy equipment installation, maintenance and use. Parlour Safe was launched in 2015 and for technicians, and others working with milking equipment, looking to achieve a recognised accreditation. “The correct fitting, maintenance and use of dairy equipment is crucial to enable farmers to milk safely and efficiently. Parlour Safe offers those involved in the industry an opportunity to stand out from the crowd and demonstrate a level of learning that is recognised at both an

academic and practical level,” explains John Baines, MEA Chairman. Hartpury College offers Category 2, an introduction to best practice that sees its participants accredited with the title Dairy Technician. “We include guest speakers from the industry to demonstrate the importance of accuracy and attention to detail,” says Hartpury tutor, Ian Coleman. “This year we will cover everything from electronics and automation to parlour ergonomics. There are already participants from all over the UK, Ireland, and we even have one joining us from Italy,” he adds. Reaseheath College provides Category 3, for technicians seeking an advanced accreditation that is

The MEA has worked closely with its industry members such as Lely, DeLaval, GEA, Boumatic and Fullwood Packo to develop these courses and categories of accreditation. The fitting and maintenance of milking machinery is unregulated. However, the MEA hopes that by promoting Parlour Safe, and encouraging existing and trainee technicians, testers and advisers to become accredited, it will drive up standards and create a benchmark. “We are proud to have developed a series of courses that enable technicians in the industry to be recognised for their skills. Fitting and maintaining equipment is a specialist discipline and Parlour Safe represents the practical level of understanding needed to be able to carry out this vital work reliably and safely,” concludes Mr Baines.

SPRAYER TESTING CHANGES COME INTO FORCE FROM NOVEMBER 2020 As part of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD), pesticide application equipment testing became a legal requirement in 2016..

A

s part of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD), pesticide application equipment (PAE) testing became a legal requirement in 2016. Any machine applying a professional pesticide must be tested by the specified dates and at regular intervals thereafter. To explain this in a bit more detail, the change affects sprayers that are more than 5 years old and have a boom width over 3 metres, air blast sprayers, aircraft, and train sprayers. Currently a test is required every 5 years, but from 26th November it changes to every 3 years. So, for any sprayer of this type tested before November 2017, a re-test is due by that date.

It is also important to note that sprayers tested any time after 26th November 2017, the test is only valid for 3 years, so if your sprayer was tested for example in June 2018, the next test is due in June 2021. For all other types of PAE, which includes boom sprayers 3 metres and under, weed wipers, slug pellet and granular applicators and a range of other machines, the requirements remain unchanged at 6 yearly cycles for retest. Crop assurance scheme requirements haven’t changed so sprayers are still required to be tested annually. Regular testing is important in helping to ensure safe and accurate application

of pesticides, protecting the environment and waterways, but also helping to safeguard the availability of products for the future. A regularly tested machine will reduce the risk of breakdowns, when timing of applications can be crucial for efficient control of weeds, pests and diseases. The need for an integrated pest management (IPM) plan to be carried out helps ensure that when the decision has been made to use a pesticide, that the equipment is calibrated and has been tested to a standard that will apply the product in a safe and sustainable way. NEW 2021 YAMAHA ATV LINE UP IS ANNOUNCED

The Yamaha Kodiak 450 ATV has been updated for 2021 with diff lock as standard on all EPS models

T

he Yamaha Kodiak 450 ATV has been updated for 2021 with diff lock as standard on all electric power steering (EPS) models and includes a safer, utility focussed rear braking system throughout the range. “This machine is nimble, easy to handle and now offers greater off-road traction, stability and safety,” explains Yamaha ATV manager William Kay. The addition of diff lock to the Kodiak will enable the operator to lock in power to all four wheels for better off road traction. “This is especially advantageous in wet and muddy conditions. The locking differential forces all wheels to spin at the same speed, regardless of traction, helping the ATV to maintain drive momentum,” explains Mr Kay. All Kodiak models will be specified with Ultramatic® transmission which maintains tension on the drive belt to provide a consistent throttle response. “The constantly variable transmission (CVT) provides the correct gear ratio as the ATV speeds up and also acts to provide engine breaking when the ATV is going downhill,” he explains. The rider is also able to automatically switch between 2WD, 4WD and diff

lock settings with the push of a button. Yamaha has also announced the release of a new Kodiak 700 EPS which will be available before the end of 2020. The 700 and the 450 Kodiak models will both benefit from a wet braking system. “Our multi-disc wet rear brake is designed for farm work. The sealed, oil cooled brake cannot be inhibited by dirt and debris that can get stuck in conventional disc brakes. This makes the ATV better suited to year round farm use, more predictable in braking and will reduce the need for costly brake repairs,” says Mr Kay. The range topping Grizzly 700 ATV is being relaunched in a range of new colours and will be supplied with alloy wheels as standard for the first time. Yamaha has committed to fitting Warn VRX 25 winches

as standard on all Kodiak and Grizzly models. The 15-metre winch has a 1,134 kilo pulling capacity and a rocker switch mounted to the handlebar. “Modern winches are used by farmers on such a regular basis, for jobs like pulling cut trees, fencing, or recovering vehicles. It is a vital piece of equipment for farmers and should therefore not come at an additional cost,” says Mr Kay. Yamaha has kept the unique compact design of its ATVs in the new models to offer farmers machines that are easier to manoeuvre in, and through, tight spaces. “We understand farmers need a stable ATV, but we don’t believe this should come at the cost of versatility. It is important that an ATV can go anywhere, and our streamlined design enables riders to pass through tight gates and operate in small spaces,” says Mr Kay.
