Bauer’s new portable Plug & Play s300 system Bauer’s new portable Plug & Play S300 system provides slurry seperation benefits in more than one location

A

new portable version of Bauer’s smallest slurry separator enables farms with more than one storage area to benefit from improved slurry management at lower cost – or for two or more small farms to share a single unit.

The Plug & Play S300 mounts a pump, the Bauer S300 screwtype separator and an electricity supply control box on to a compact steel frame.

Slots in three sides of the frame enable the separation set to be moved, loaded on to a trailer and placed in position using pallet tines on a farm loader.

Once set-up, the Plug & Play S300 is capable of separating up to 15cu m of slurry an hour into liquid and solid fractions, with dry matter content of the

solids at about 32%.

“Separation in this way can have a significant impact on storage capacity requirements and management of slurry as a resource,” said Adrian Tindall, Bauer UK & Ireland. “The liquid fraction can be applied from a lagoon through a dirty water irrigator and the solids stored and spread separately to grazing or conservation grass, or to crop stubbles as and when required.”

Slurry in-flow to the S300 separator is regulated by an automatic pressure control to ensure consistent results and, as with all Bauer slurry separators, adjustable weighted discharge flaps provide resistance to help the stainless steel screw squeeze liquid through a choice of long-life screens.

It is a well-proven unit built to the same high standards of quality and durability as the larger separators in the Bauer range – the 5.5kW S655 and S855, the 7.5kW S855 HD, and the 7.5kW S855 GB – all of which are available individually for gantry installation alongside the slurry store or as part of a portable Plug & Play set.

Regarding the Plug & Play S300 introduction, Thomas Kampl, product manager for Bauer separation technology, said: “By expanding the ‘Plug & Play’ family, we continue to adapt our standard solutions to meet the needs of livestock farms and, in this instance, provide smaller farms with the opportunity to profit from the economic and practical advantages of separation.”

Three Agritechnica silver medals for Amazone

Different fertilisers are often mixed together to save on the number of applications and so reduce operating costs.

New self-propelled sprayers from John Deere

John Deere has launched its next generation of self-propelled sprayers, manufactured at the company’s Horst factory in The Netherlands

ohn Deere has launched its next generation of self-propelled sprayers, manufactured at the company’s Horst factory in The Netherlands. With the new R4140i 4000-litre capacity and R4150i 5000-litre capacity machines, engineers have further increased performance, precision, safety and operator comfort.

The focus of these latest developments has been on improving sprayer output while ensuring that the highest possible application quality is maintained and also delivering an improved operator environment. The premium design cab offers a new generation operator interface with fully integrated technology, such as the John Deere universal 4640 display mounted on a new armrest.

JDLink telematics for wirelessly transferring data both to and from the sprayer is available as standard, including free activation for five years. An upgraded lighting package improves visibility at night, both when working in the field and filling the sprayer with chemicals, to ensure maximum productivity in all conditions.

The new cab is available at two specification levels depending on customer requirements, as well as with optional Category 4 operator

protection to meet the latest safety regulations.

Both models are available with steel booms from 24 to 36m wide, and continue to use John Deere’s leading PowrSpray solution system, with direct rate control for fast filling and highly accurate application rates. Combined with the innovative,automated AirRinse system, this reduces the solution system’s dead volume to as low as 5 litres for maximum cleaning performance.

To ensure that nozzles are no longer a limiting factor for efficient spraying, ExactApply is now available as an option on the new R4140i and R4150i.

Already available for two years on US machines, ExactApply is an ‘intelligent’ solution that combines the ability to change spray nozzles manually from the cab or automatically depending on

application rate and speed. It can also maintain droplet size while changing speed through the use of pulse width modulation (PWM) technology up to 30Hz. With ExactApply, each nozzle is controlled individually via GPS based section control.

Furthermore, with PWM enabled, turn compensation ensures that application rates remain consistent across the full boom width even when turning the sprayer.

New MySoyl digital tools enable better understanding of profitability

The new functionality is live now in MySOYL and can be accessed for as little as £350 per year, there is no requirement to be a current SOYL customer.

UHN Farm Machinery has re-launched its Multi-Disc System (MDS) fertiliser spreaders with a range of machines offering increased spreading width and greater hopper capacities than earlier models.

The MDS 8.2, 14.2, 18.2 and 20.2 all have the capability of spreading quality fertiliser reliably from 10 metres and up to 24 metres when fitted with the newly developed M2 discs. All models are available with either hydraulic or electric rate control; or they can be used with Quantron A electronic control for automatic groundspeed related application rate adjustment and GPS compatibility.

Maximum hopper capacity on the MDS 8.2 is 800 litres and rises to 2,000 litres on the MDS 20.2 when the largest extension is fitted.

Individual control of right and left hand discs allows half width spreading as standard on all models. With rates as low as 3kg/ha possible, the MDS range is well suited to applying seeds and slug pellets, and with easily interchangeable M1 and M2 discs, can be adapted to apply fertiliser for specialist crops, normal spreading or late top dressing. A slow rotating agitator eliminates the risk of fertiliser damage and makes it possible to spreader powders or organic (pelleted) fertilisers.

Border spreading to left or right is a standard feature via the adjustment of vanes or can be achieved with the in-cab monitored Telimat deflectors.

MDS spreaders are equipped with a maintenance-free gearbox (first oil change is recommended after 10 years use), and long service life is ensured using stainless steel or corrosion-resistant materials for the hopper bottom, valves, discs, vanes, border spreading limiters and pivot pins.

The smaller MDS 8.2 and 14.2 models are designed with narrow hopper widths (1.08m and 1.4m respectively), making them more practical for use in orchards and vineyards. Spreading mode can be adapted to apply only in cultivated rows in these situations.

Starting prices of the basic MDS machines range from ÂŁ5,783 to ÂŁ5,892.

ince the legal requirements for all pesticide application equipment (PAE) to be tested came into force three years ago, farmers are seeing the increased benefits of regular testing. The Red Tractor Crops and Fresh Produce schemes both require more frequent testing for some machines and although this may seem an additional cost burden, but we believe this is far outweighed by the assurance that your equipment is applying pesticides accurately and safely.

Brooding: The importance of a faultless start for chicks Successful brooding practices are key to achieving profitable broiler production and assuring the welfare of flock

S

uccessful brooding practices are key to achieving profitable broiler production and assuring the welfare of the flock, writes Nigel Strain, Senior Regional Manager, Tech Service EMEA, at Cobb Proper brooding is essential for early development and growth, flock uniformity, health and efficiency. There is a clear correlation between first week performance and final performance metrics.

An optimal 7-day brooding period can produce a commercial broiler with higher average daily gain and lower feed conversion ratio, as good early development helps produce a more efficient broiler. A minimum growth ratio of 4.6 should be achieved in the first week. This can be accomplished through rigorous attention to detail, providing a comfortable stress-free environment, and easy access to good quality water and feed.

Providing the correct temperature is crucial during early brooding. Because the chicks do not become homeothermic until at least day five, they are dependent on supplemental heat to achieve the proper temperature.

Preheating the house requires at least 28◦C for the concrete and a floor temperature of 30◦C before the chicks arrive.

A comfortable internal body temperature of 40-40.6◦C

needs to be maintained during the first four days, increasing to 41-42◦C thereafter. When setting house brooding temperature, one must consider the interaction with relative humidity. High relative humidity will be uncomfortable for the chicks, impair their heat loss, and also add excess moisture to the litter. It is recommended that the relative humidity be maintained below 70%. brooding feature pic 2 Managing air quality Air quality should be managed at all times. An optimised ventilation system will remove noxious gases and excess moisture from the house and provide an optimal supply of oxygen (at least 19.6%). High carbon dioxide level will result in lethargic, inactive chicks with reduced consumption and growth, affecting performance.

The carbon dioxide level should never exceed 3,000 parts per million (0.3%).

Once a chick has consumed water and feed, development and growth will start. However, if early feed consumption is not achieved both the fat and the protein contained in the yolk will be depleted and leave inadequate protein levels for development and growth.

To provide each chick with ease of access, and aid uniformity, we recommend placing a row

of good quality paper on each side of the drinker lines and a minimum of 75g of feed per chick evenly distributed on the papers. The feed on the papers needs to last approximately 72 hours, until all the chicks can access the main feeder source.

Clean water Water quality and management is vitally important. Simply put: If the water is not good enough for human consumption, then it is not fit for our broilers.

Keeping water lines clean during brooding requires consistent attention because the warm environment and slow flow of water through the drinker lines provide ideal conditions for bacterial growth.

Flushing drinker lines regularly will prevent biofilm build-up and help maintain drinking water temperature below 25◦C. For a high-flow drinker system, we recommend a flow rate through nipples of 40ml per minute during the first seven days.

A flow higher than 40ml per minute makes it difficult for the chicks to activate the nipples and can also result in more spillage creating wet litter. As a rule of thumb, in the first 24-hours post placement each chick should be consuming the equivalent of half its bodyweight in water (approximately 1ml per hour) and a quarter of its bodyweight in feed.

At the time of writing, we had heard the disappointing news that there had been a salmonella outbreak which resulted in the Food Standards Agency issuing a warning to thoroughly cook eggs from a farm code with a certain best-before date.

As you know, among the cornerstones of the Code are; compulsory vaccination to protect birds against Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium, in accordance with the datasheet; high standards of hygiene on farms and throughout the supply chain; and ensuring proper and effective rodent control.

This has proven successful in controlling Salmonella in eggs and minimising on-farm environmental salmonella.

Over the last few years, against a backdrop of increasing levels of Salmonella across the EU, we have instigated various trial work, as well as making amendments to the protocols in the Lion Code to ensure that flocks are as protected as possible. These include: where an environmental sample (a nonvaccinal regulated salmonella serovar i.e. Salmonella Enteritidis, Salmonella Typhimurium, or a monophasic Typhimurium) is found, the flock is immediately suspended and the eggs are quarantined on farm, in transit, or in the packing centre.

The protocols for dealing with such a regulated salmonella serovar have been significantly improved. We do not allow the affected house to re-enter the Lion scheme until full cleaning and disinfection has taken place and negative results have been confirmed. This also serves to

protect the producer as APHA will come and collect an official sample from the new flock when it is aged between 22-26 weeks; we are constantly researching the efficacy of the Lion Code and have met with the (salmonella) vaccine manufacturers whose licenced products are used by producers in the Lion scheme.

This has led to a vaccination trial to assess immunity of commercial layers to test the efficacy of the vaccine, to ensure that the vaccines remain fit for purpose and will continue to do so; We have also carried out a survey to assess older flocks. In addition, we have also started a programme of enhanced sampling and testing across the Lion estate; and we have trialled a new robust protocol for dealing with Salmonella sp. detection in packing centre samples, which is being rolled out.

That was the view of poultry farmer and tech entrepreneur David Speller at the Britsh Free Range Producers Association (BFREPA) conference in Birmingham on 15 October, where he talked about how his experience in introducing new technology to the broiler sector could have applications for free-range egg producers.

Speller started with one broiler farm in 2004 and now contract farms over 1.5m birds at any one time through his company

It was now fairly standard in broiler farms to monitor ammonia in real time as well as carbon dioxide.

Technology, he said, allows producers to reduce risk; understand more about what’s happening and why; improve consistency of production; keep customers happy; and make money.

Feed costs are 68% of total input costs in broiler production, said Speller, and his farms had an FCR of 1.54:1. Managing data allowed for constant improvement, he said. In New Zealand, better farm

design meant FCR of 1.3:1 was possible.

Robotics was an area of massive development at the moment, said Speller.

Chicken Boy, which provides an analysis of droppings and dead animals from its position on an overhead rail, was just one example of a useful tool for producers.

Speller said pictures of dead birds could be shared with vets and analysis of droppings, and their shape and wetness could be used to help determine gut health.

Free-moving robots can be used to sense the whole environment, said Speller.

They can be used to detect air movement, and manage ventilation to optimise bird health.

Honda updates market leading Fourtrax 420 and Foreman 500 ATV Honda has launched updated versions of its market leading Fourtrax 420 and Foreman 500 ATV

onda has launched updated versions of its market leading Fourtrax 420 and Foreman 500 ATV ranges. Available to buy now, these models have benefited from a number of enhancements to deliver improved performance, usability and versatility, while the Foreman 500 has received an engine upgrade and been renamed the Foreman 520.

Prices start from £6,425 (excluding VAT) for the TRX 420FM1 with the range topping TRX520 FA6 costing £8,600 (excluding VAT).

Forward/reverse skip switch The first change is an all-new forward/reverse skip switch for Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) and Electric Shift (ES) models, offering easier and quicker shift in and out of reverse with just one lever. This fully electronic operation is perfect for applications such as snow ploughing or yard clearing, where constant shifting between forward and reverse is required.

Manual-override capability DCT models also get a new manual-override system, allowing the operator to manually change gear even when in automatic drive, with the transmission reverting back to fully automatic mode after a few seconds. Such capability gives more control of speed and power than ever before, ideal for upshifting on descents or downshifting into corners.

New shift map A further change for DCT and ES models is a new shift map which monitors engine RPM in realtime during shifting, rather than just before shift, delivering much smoother transition between gears.

Front-mounted 1.9-litre water resistant utility box and redesigned front and rear cargo racks All models also benefit from an integrated frontmounted 1.9-litre utility box with weatherproof cover, designed to keep personal items and tools safe and protected from the elements. The new box is easy to access from the riding position for added convenience and usability.

Newly engineered front and rear cargo racks on all models provide greater surface area for carrying larger loads.

New full-length suspension guards All models get new guards covering the full-length of the suspension arms, providing comprehensive coverage of the driveshaft and outboard CV joints, for even further trademark Honda durability.

Engine upgrade for Foreman 500 models The Foreman 500 has been renamed the ‘Foreman 520’ thanks to an engine upgrade. The new engine delivers 518cc up from 475cc on the outgoing model. With updated mapping the TRX520 delivers stronger low-mid range power and torque, for quicker acceleration and better ascent.

Other changes for the Foreman range include the addition of 50 watt LED lights, and a new front bumper and grille.

Honda’s Fourtrax 420 and Foreman 520 ATVs set the standard in the utility market and are built-for-purpose and developed using Computer Aided Engineering at Honda’s R&D facility in Ohio. Both ranges feature a longitudinallymounted liquid-cooled engine to deliver smooth power to the rear wheels, and a double-cradle steel frame for exceptional durability and handling. All models also offer Honda’s own Traxlok® system, allowing the operator to quickly switch between the ‘go-anywhere’ traction of 4WD and the increased manoeuvrability and lighter steering of 2WD. The Fourtrax 420 is the UK’s best-selling ATV, a mid-sized all-rounder with class-leading power and ability, offering a towing capacity of 385kg. It’s bigger brother, the Foreman 520, is the ultimate workhorse, a heavy hitter for hard work and hauling big loads and offers a towing capacity of 600kg.

These new models are available now from Honda’s UK network of Authorised Dealers and also benefit from the addition of Datatool, the state-of-the-art tracking equipment, free-ofcharge. The TQA-approved TrakKING Adventure package uses GPS chip set technology to offer theft protection, instant notifications and full journey history logging.

One of the most common causes of ATV accidents is a lack of training provided for the driver. It is actually a legal requirement for farmers to provide adequate training for their employees on how to use work equipment such as ATVs and to ensure only those who have received the training can use the equipment. The same rules apply to farmers themselves.

Fortunately, the European ATV Safety Institute (EASI) offer free, or highly subsidised, training to anyone buying a new or used ATV made by either Honda, Kawasaki, Polaris, Suzuki, BRP or Yamaha from an authorised UK dealer.
