John Deere: Getting the latest guidance technology for less Farmers and contractors are being offered the chance to upgrade their old John Deere StarFire iTC satellite receivers for a reduced price

signal, effective down to 3cm, as well as an advanced Gen 4 4240 or 4640 GreenStar display, all at a lower price.

F

armers and contractors are being offered the chance to upgrade their old John Deere StarFire iTC satellite receivers for the latest SF6000 guidance technology at a specially reduced price, from now up to the end of June 2020 (extended from the end of April). The introduction of the StarFire iTC receiver in 2004 established John Deere’s industry leadership in automatic machine guidance, with the familiar cab-mounted yellow dome supporting a range of precise global satellite positioning system (GNSS) applications. However, from January 2021 these units will no longer be able to receive SF1 and SF2 correction signals.

6 | AgriNews | April 2020

After this date AutoTrac automatic steering will only work with the more accurate RTK signal, although applications such as Section Control, documentation and parallel tracking will still be possible using older 2630 or 1800 GreenStar displays.

Most customers use a satellite receiver for the AutoTrac guidance system, but the technology has developed much further over the last two decades and additional functions such as Section Control on sprayers and fertiliser spreaders have been introduced. Just as smartphones rely on increasingly powerful hardware to function more efficiently, so John Deere’s latest receivers now feature a similar technology boost.

Once they’ve upgraded, customers will benefit from faster signal acquisition and the displays’ ISOBUS compatibility, as well as wireless software updates and the PIN code locking system to help prevent theft.

To benefit from the more advanced satellite receiver technology now available, owners will now be able to trade in any current iTC receiver for the latest, fourth generation StarFire 6000 model with their local dealer. Milestone moment as 10,000th JCB meal served up for county’s needy JCB is poised to re-start production at a factory closed as a result of the Coronavirus crisis in order to join national effort to manufacture ventilators

J

CB’s ‘Food for our Communities’ initiative today served up a major milestone as the 10,000th meal was despatched from the company’s kitchens for those in need in Staffordshire. Since the launch of the scheme – the idea of Carole Bamford, wife of JCB Chairman Lord Bamford – catering staff at the World HQ in Rocester have been busily preparing cottage pies, macaroni cheese and bolognese dishes for disadvantaged families and individuals across the region during the Coronavirus crisis. Today the 10,000th meal was cooked and despatched from the JCB kitchen – just a month after the initiative started. So far, the team has used around two tonnes of potatoes, more than one tonne of minced beef and almost half a tonne of both pasta and onions to prepare the dishes. In India – where JCB has factories in Delhi, Pune and Jaipur – the scale of the initiative is even greater and staff there have now prepared a staggering 100,000 meals. Carole Bamford, wife of JCB Chairman Lord Bamford, said: “I’m very proud of all the work the teams in the UK and India are undertaking. Drone Ag: Use drones to spot disease early

Farmers are being offered a new tool to spot crop diseases more effectively this spring.

F

armers are being offered a new tool to spot crop diseases more effectively this spring. A new mobile phone app, Skippy Scout, has been developed by technology pioneer Drone Ag to pinpoint diseases such as yellow rust and Septoria tritici earlier using drone imagery. “Spotting the signs of common diseases as early as possible has become increasingly important to controlling them promptly,” says Drone Ag founder Jack Wrangham. “A drone can scout a field and send images to a farmer’s mobile phone five times faster than conventional crop walking.” A drone can fly in close proximity to the crop and take high resolution, leaf level images that are sent to the user’s phone in real time. These images can be used to identify the extent to which disease is affecting leaves. “This point in the year is crucial for arable farmers to protect crops against a variety of foliar diseases,” says Mr Wrangham. “Skippy Scout is a mobile app that farmers can download and use with almost any drone for just £30 per month,” he adds. “In minutes a drone can take images of multiple points in a 10 | AgriNews | April 2020

field. The images are detailed enough to identify early signs of many common crop diseases. Skippy Scout offers farmers and agronomists an opportunity to spot diseases faster and reduce the risk of irreparable damage to yield. Preventing yield loss will ultimately help farmers improve crop margins,” explains Mr Wrangham. Using drones also enables farmers to share images of crops with agronomists between visits. Robert Ord, agronomist for MSP Agriculture confirms: “This technology gives me an accurate image of how crops are developing at this time of year. Using Skippy Scout, or looking at images sent to me, I can identify disease before it becomes too established and protect crops earlier.” Drone Ag has already seen over fifty user downloads of Skippy Scout in the first month of sales, and many more farmers are investing in drones to begin using the app. “This is not future technology. It is available now and can be downloaded to help farmers walk crops faster this year. Drones are widely available, and prices have dropped to £200 for a Mavic Mini which requires no licence to fly and can be used straight out of the box,” says

Mr Wrangham. In addition to high resolution images, Drone Ag is also developing artificial intelligence (AI) to interpret drone images. AI will be integrated into Skippy Scout later this year and will use images to help identify and inform users of diseases. This will reduce the need for farmers to interpret images and reduce the time it takes to act accordingly. “This technology can revolutionise how farmers identify disease and has the potential to save acres of crops worldwide,” concludes Mr Wrangham.

Arable growers warned not to ditch multi-site fungicides

Arable growers warned not to ditch multi-site fungicides as chlorothalonil deadline looms

W

ith the final useup date for chlorothalonil rapidly approaching, arable growers in the UK will need to switch to folpet to maintain effective protection against cereal diseases such as septoria in wheat and rhynchosporium and ramularia in barley. That is according to Andy Bailey, Fungicides Technical Specialist for ADAMA who advises that any fungicide treatments made after the 20th May cut-off date which would have included chlorothalonil should include folpet instead; not only to ensure crops are adequately protected, but also to protect single-site modes of action from mounting disease resistance. “In recent years, the efficacy of some of the principal wheat and barley ‘single-site’ SDHI, azole and strobilurin fungicides has been eroded by the development of resistant disease strains,” Andy explains. “Meanwhile, other active ingredients, including chlorothalonil, have been lost to regulatory restrictions, thereby making the effective control of key wheat and barley diseases increasingly difficult to achieve. Growers must therefore think carefully

about how they structure their fungicide treatments in the second half of the spring to ensure their crops remain properly protected.” Chlorothalonil has been the ‘go-to’ multi-site fungicide for many years but can’t be used beyond the 20th May after the EU voted to revoke its license. “The decision to ban chlorothalonil came as a huge blow to farmers in the UK, especially as our maritime climate makes crops particularly susceptible to fungal diseases,” Andy continues. “As a multisite fungicide which targets multiple metabolic sites within a pathogen, chlorothalonil has performed two important functions: providing effective disease control and reducing the risk of further resistance. With the loss of this popular fungicide there is a danger that, beyond the 20th May cut-off date, growers may choose simply not to replace the multi-site component of their crop protection programmes. “But that would be a dangerous backward step,” Andy warns, “as it would put crops at increased risk of infection and heighten the resistance risk for other modes of action.”

Mr Bailey therefore urges growers to switch to folpet as an alternative to chlorothalonil. “With folpet and mancozeb the only multisites currently registered, Arizona (500 g/L folpet) is the most efficacious option when it comes to replacing chlorothalonil. It is flexible enough to be used at T0, T1 and T2 (at a maximum individual application rate of 1.5 L/ha and a total application rate of 3 L/ha) to protect wheat against septoria and barley against rhynchosporium and ramularia. “Arizona also provides some activity against yellow rust in wheat – either as a standalone active or as a mix partner for straight SDHI fungicides – and offers the additional advantage of not interfering with the curative kickback activity of azoles: an important factor where active rust is present as it is important to maximise the speed of activity and the curative effect of the azole in order to combat infections effectively,” Andy concludes. Modern swedes offer nutritious out-wintering option

UK field trials with the new generation swede variety Triumph have demonstrated its value as a cost effective option

U

K field trials with the new generation swede variety Triumph have demonstrated its value as a cost effective out-wintering option for livestock farmers. In studies carried out by forage seed specialist Germinal GB during 2018 and 2019, crops monitored on farms in England, Wales and Scotland recorded bulb yields of 9tDM/ha with high levels of leaf retention resulting in significant additional crude protein. With average growing costs calculated at £385/ha, Germinal believes the cost of dry matter from the swedes to be in the region of 4p/ kg, creating opportunities for livestock farmers to build greater sustainability into their production systems.

14 | AgriNews | April 2020

“From the results we’ve seen with Triumph, there’s no doubt that swedes offer a cheap and simple out-wintering option that has the potential to reduce costs of production in both cattle and sheep sectors in the UK,” says Germinal GB’s Ben Wixey. “Whilst the bulb is the primary feed source from swedes, contributing as much as 120,000MJ/ha of energy, we’ve been impressed with ability of the variety Triumph to retain its leaves through into the grazing period. From measurements taken during our programme of field trials, we estimate the retained leaf material to provide around 1t/ha of crude protein to grazing livestock, which is a significant bonus.” The optimum drilling window for

swedes is between the middle of May and the end of June for most UK farmers, with crops typically being ready to graze within about 25 weeks. “With a block grazing approach, five hectares of Triumph swede could be expected to support around 400 in-lamb ewes, or 75 bulling heifers, for up to 100 days,” adds Ben Wixey. “That’s creating a huge opportunity to reduce bought-in feeds and lower the cost of production significantly.” Further information on establishing and managing swedes for out-wintering is available at Germinal GB’s Knowledge Hub at https:// germinal.co.uk/knowledge-hub/ brassica-growers-guide/

finding it useful to demonstrate accuracy when carrying out tasks for farmers. Alistair (Asty) Hynd, a Perthshire contractor and arable farmer, has been

Q Companion uses sensors mounted on the loader to accurately weigh the contents lifted by an implement. Each lift is displayed and can be recorded and aggregated on an easy to mount screen. This enables the operator to assess when the correct quantity has been loaded and keep a record for future reference or comparison. The device can be retrofitted to most loaders and is priced at less than £1000. It also integrates with a readily downloadable app to offer users the option of saving and comparing jobs using just a mobile phone. “Q Companion is a really useful device for those who are doing a lot of loading and want to keep a track of the amounts they are lifting,” says Steve Hewitt, general manager, Quicke UK. Early adopters of the technology, especially contractors, are already 16 | AgriNews | April 2020

using the device for a few months to measure the weight of the turnips he grows and sells. “We have farmers come to collect turnips from us at Hillfoot Farm near Coupar Angus. I use Q Companion to show them the exact weight I have loaded. We don’t have a weighbridge nearby, so it saves me a lot of hassle and gives my customers confidence that they have the correct amount,” he says. Concerns with overloading

trailers and breaking regulations are another way that the device is helping its users. “It’s often difficult to know the weight of a bale, especially if very wet or dry. I used to think that I could only get fourteen bales on a trailer but using Q Companion I can weigh each bale, so later in the day when bales are drying out I can often get fifteen or sixteen on a trailer which saves me a journey,” explains Mr Hynd. The device has a position monitor that shows the operator the implement height and angle reference. This negates the need to readjust the manual indicator rod when changing implements. It can also store up to thirty implements which can be calibrated for both weighing and position monitoring. “This device has countless applications and we are already receiving positive feedback from early adopters who are reporting innovative uses for it in every day farming tasks. We have profiled two users and there are videos on our website showing the ways they have applied Q Companion,” says Mr Hewitt.

Opportunity to hold back key disease in late-planted wheat Growers have a valuable opportunity to keep a lid on the UK’s major winter wheat disease of Septoria tritici and protect yield in late planted crops

G

rowers have a valuable opportunity to keep a lid on the UK’s major winter wheat disease of Septoria tritici and protect yield in this season’s late-planted crops, says a leading ADAS expert. But new ADAS research has underlined the importance of not squandering this by applying fungicides too late.

Although Septoria in late crops cannot be ruled out, Mr Blake believes it puts growers in a much stronger position to curb its spread up the top three yield-building leaves, but it will be important that fungicides are applied on time.

Outstanding new grass & clover varieties offer timely boost

Two new high performance varieties that are commerically available for the first time in 2020 significantly enhance the top selling grass & clover mixtures

T

wo new high performance varieties that are commercially available for the first time in 2020 significantly enhance the top selling grass and clover mixtures supplied by forage seed specialist Germinal GB. The latest Aber High Sugar Grass AberBann and the new medium leaf white clover AberSwan, both bred at the Institute of Biological Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) Aberystwyth University, are the new standout inclusions that will give livestock farmers greater potential for homegrown forage production. “Continuing progress in forage breeding is essential if we are to build greater long term sustainability into our livestock farming systems and that’s currently more important than ever,” says Ben Wixey, National Agricultural Sales Manager for Germinal GB. “With the short term disruption in the food supply chains and the longer term prospect of reduced direct farm support, livestock farmers will need better and better varieties to underpin their forage-based systems. Providing continually improving varieties, and the required knowledge to grow and utilise them effectively, is

a big part of our commitment to UK farming. “AberBann adds to our comprehensive Aber High Sugar Grass range of topranking ryegrasses on the Recommended Grass and Clover List. The combination of high dry matter yields and exceptional quality means significantly more energy per hectare for producing milk or meat. In addition, the variety excels in all the important agronomic traits (ground cover, persistency, disease resistance) that ensure the leys perform in the field. “AberSwan is the latest product of a legume breeding programme at IBERS that includes performance under animal grazing as part of its white clover selection protocol. This is a medium-large leaf variety that has demonstrated outstanding persistency when cut and grazed, out-yielding all other white clovers in the third harvest year. It is a strong addition to the range of Aber white clovers and now features in our AberDairy Clover Blend for cutting and grazing mixtures.” AberBann and AberSwan were planned as the showcase varieties in Germinal’s Royal Welsh Grassland and Grassland

& Muck demonstrations, now cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. AberBann is a late heading diploid perennial ryegrass, combining a high grazing yield with outstanding quality (Grazing D-value of 77.8). No other perennial ryegrass on the 2019/20 Recommended Grass and Clover List (RGCL) is higher than AberBann’s 109% for ME Yield/ha, and this superior energy yield ranks it 12% higher than the average of all other late diploids on the current list. In official trials, AberBann shows consistently high dry matter yields throughout, with a particularly strong main season performance with 113% of controls for early summer grazing and 106% of controls for late summer grazing. AberSwan is a mediumlarge leaf-size variety with an impressive total clover yield at 109% of the mean of all varieties on the RGCL and shows its persistency with this rising to 119% of the mean by the third harvest year. Both new varieties will be marketed exclusively worldwide by Germinal and feature in Germinal GB’s Aber High Sugar Grass mixtures for the 2020 season. April 2020 | AgriNews | 19

Poultry: The secret to bigger, stronger eggs

New research suggests the right diet can help hens lay larger eggs with fewer cracks, right to the end of lay Genetic advancements in layer hens means flocks are being kept on for longer than ever before. But there are well documented problems with older hens over 80 weeks laying weaker, larger eggs, leading to a greater proportion of seconds. While the broiler sector has generally kept pace with genetic advancements by formulating feeds that get the most out of the birds, there has been less work in this area with layers. However, a new series of farm trials and scientific trials carried out with ForFarmers’ Sustain product has produced some promising results. ForFarmers has a range of layer diets and Sustain, which contains the Shell Mix innovation, is the diet that is fed from mid-lay to the end of lay. “It was produced to support the requirement for the longer-living hen, which is what producers and packers are driving for at the minute,” says Dave Hilldrith, ForFarmers’ UK poultry director. Traditionally, hens were fed on diets that were of a high specification early in lay, then were less nutrient-dense as the hens got older. But, says National Poultry Advisor Andrew Fothergill, the modern egg layer has the ability to produce far more eggs than 20 | AgriNews | April 2020

in previous times. A diet that declines in nutrient density can affect egg numbers and shell quality. So, the purpose of the farm trials was to establish whether a diet like Sustain, which has a high nutrient density, offered a financial benefit to the farmer and reduced the number of seconds. “We wanted to be able to give farmers the reassurance that if they were going to take their hens, which they would normally cull at 72 weeks, well into the 80+ weeks, that it was financially worthwhile,” says Iain Campbell, ForFarmers’ key account manager, poultry & pigs. “Sometimes farmers are wary of doing that because if the rate of seconds is too high, then they are going to start to lose money. And there is a long lead in time to replace the flock, so the farmer needs to have confidence, generally, that when the flock is about 40 weeks of age about when to order his replacement pullets. He needs to know that if he goes to 85 weeks he is going to have a commercially viable flock and not a situation where he is losing money for the last 10 weeks or even that his packer may refuse to take his eggs.” The company arranged some farm trials with Robert Jackson & Son near Berwick. “We

agreed to do a long-term trial on a flock and take them to 85 weeks,” says Campbell. “We put half of them on to the Sustain diet and we were able to get from that quite a successful result in terms of the commercial aspect and how much more money they made keeping them to 85 weeks. “We were able to prove on that farm trial with Jacksons that there was a £6,000 benefit to keeping the hens longer, just on that particular flock. And if you are keeping hens longer and keeping all your flocks to 85 weeks then it means you are losing one flock every six flocks. You are getting five flocks to do the work of six flocks,” he adds. Older hens Generally, when the hens drop below 80% production, it starts to become unviable. As the cycle continues, egg numbers go down, egg size goes up, and usually shell quality deteriorates, so there is a critical point when there is a disproportionate number of seconds. “We have been involved in trials taking birds over 100 weeks, and the economics do begin to get a little marginal when you get up there but it shows it can potentially be done,” says Campbell.
