KUBOTA LAUNCHES UTILITARIAN VERSION OF M6 RANGE

Kubota has launched a cost conscious, five-model utility version of its M6 tractor range, which is to succeed the MGX series

T

heKubotaM6-01Utility rangecomprisesfive models spanning 104 to 143hp and starts at £53,300. The model lineup is much the same as the predecessor’s with two short wheel base and three long wheelbase models, the latter of which are heavily based on the recently launchedM6-02Series. TheM6-01Utilityseries spans 104 to 143hp, and meets Stage 5 emissions thanks to an improved exhaust after-treatmentpackage that is said to lower cost of ownership. Short wheelbase models includetheM6-10Uand M6-1U,bothofwhichuse thefour-cylinder3.8-litre engine, manufactured in house. Maximum power outputs are 104hp and 111hp, withmaximumtorquefigures of 346Nm and 379Nm, respectively. These two models weigh 4.3 tonnes, and use a 2.54m wheelbase.

Engine technology on all models has seen gains in exhaustafter-treatment,with DOC and DPF performance increased to deliver greater operationalflexibilityand reduce cost of ownership. DPF regeneration can now be achieved at a much lower engine speed, typically 1,200rpm down from 2,000rpm and is achieved at a much lower working temperature of just 50 degC. The latter makes regeneration easier to achieve with light engine loads, lower noise levels and a reduced fuel burn. The DPF cleaning interval forM6-01Utilityrangeis 8,000 hours for the 6.1 litre engine, and up to 6,000 hours for the 3.8 litre engine, again contributing to lower operating costs. Engine oil change intervals are every 500 hours on all models.

CALLS FOR GOVERNMENT PLAN TO REALISE POTENTIAL OF BRITISH FARMING Without the urgent implementations of clear plan and vision for British farming & food production, we risk wasting potential of agri sector

W

ithout the urgent implementation of a clear plan and vision for British farming and food production, the government risks wasting the huge potential of the country’s agriculture sector and potentially sleepwalking into more and more crises, the NFU is warning today. In her keynote speech to its annual conference, NFU President Minette Batters will launch a new report ‘British farming: a blueprint for the future’tohighlightfivekey areas the government, supply chain and farmers needs to prioritise: Commitment and investment from both government and retail to sell more British food at home and abroad Using the powers in the Agriculture Act to enable farmers and growers to trade fairly A new economic model that drives investment back into the land, ensuring the tenanted sector is not disadvantaged Adial-up,dial-down immigration policy Future farm policy with a properly funded Sustainable Farming Incentive Batters will also call for certainty, commitment and consistency in government policy that can capitalise

on British farming’s high standards of food production and net zero ambition. She will say a plan with this approach will help avert unnecessary crises. In her speech, NFU President Minette Batters will say: “I want to be clear from the outset. British farming has a lot to be positive about, to be proud of, and to believe in; our high standards of food production, our net zero ambitions, our education programme which reached a third of a million children last year. “This country needs a strategy and a clear vision for what we expect from British farming. We have completely contradictory government policies. It is raising the bar for environmental standards at home but pursuing trade deals which support lower standards overseas. “It is claiming to value

domestic food production butmakingitdibculttofind workers to harvest or process it. It is stating there are many export opportunities for British food but failing to prioritise the resources to open up those new markets. “If government wants to achieve more for the environment, then there is only one solution. We need policies and investment into the new world optimisation of agriculture. Polarised debates are getting us nowhere and they’re not allowing us to focus on the very real challenges around food supply in the future. “Above and beyond everything, we need to all be working to the same objectives and aiming for the same outcome. There needs to be a plan. A plan which enables Britain to keep on farming and to continue to be world leaders in high quality,

NOFENCE VIRTUAL FENCING TECHNOLOGY WINS AGRISCOT INNOVATION AWARD Fewer physical fences and better grazing management are on the horizon for livestock producers

only have one pulse per every 30 audio cues and escapes are rare,” says Ms Budal. “Nofence is also very diverse in the type of system it is suitable for, working in intensive rotational grazing, upland and conservation platforms.”

Established in Norway in 2011 for mountain grazers, Nofence has recently become commercially available to UK livestock producers after more than two years of grazing trials on British beef farms.

The technology was a standout to the AgriScot Innovation Award judging panel who awarded points based on if the innovation saved farmers money or had the capacity toincreaseprofits, saysKen Fletcher, award judge and editor of The Scottish Farmer.

Utilising GPS, farmers can create virtual pastures on the Nofence app. Once livestock are turned out on the set virtual pasture while wearing a Nofence collar, GPS and a mobile data network track the animal’s location and report back to the app, triggering the collar to cue an audio signal as the animal nears the virtual fence boundary. If the animal continues to move forward they will receive an electric pulse. This sequence of audio warnings, followed by a possible pulse, can happen three times. If the animal breaches the virtual boundary following the third audio cue,thefarmersreceiveapop-up notificationviatheNofenceapp with the location of the animal as classed as escaped. Animals can return to pasture without receiving any audio warnings or pulses.

“In the judges’ opinion, Nofence Grazing Technology actually did abitofbothasitcouldoaer reduced capital costs in fencing infrastructure and also allow the freeing up of new grazing opportunitieswhichwouldbenefit farmers’ bottom lines,” says Mr Fletcher. The judging panel also included John Elliot, a Border’s farmer and industry columnist, and John Elliot, CEO of the Royal Highland Agricultural Society of Scotland.

Consisting of 2,500 acres of moorland with an elevation range of 200m to over 1,000m, knowing where his herd of Luing cattle was, let alone managing grazing, was a challenge. “Thereal-timetrackingcapabilityof Nofencehassignificantlycutdown on the time required to manage the herd,” explains Mr Duncan. “But more excitingly, we are now able to graze areas of the farm that have not been touched by livestock in more than 100 years. Not only has this allowed us to make more of our land resource, but we can now actively manage our grazing to deliver wider biodiversity and conservation outcomes.”
