John Deere: New compact tractors
John Deere has announced a number of updates to the company’s comprehensive tractor range for 2020
J
ohn Deere has announced a number of updates to the company’s comprehensive compact tractor range for 2020, which includes 13 models in six Series from 25 to 66hp. The main change is prompted by the latest Stage V emissions regulations in Europe, which are designed to limit ultrafine particulate emissions in all engines above 25hp (19kW). Ultrafine particulates are less than 0.1 microns in diameter, which is 700 times smaller than a human hair. John Deere’s compact tractors rated at 25hp and below – the 1026R and 2026R, which remain unchanged, and the new 3025E – already meet the necessary standards. Other 2R and 3R Series models above 25hp get a new Yanmar 1.6-litre, three-cylinder TNV Series diesel engine that features a high torque reserve, providing plenty of power under heavy loads. This uses the latest engine technologies to improve fuel economy, control and accuracy, while also reducing environmental impact as well as operating costs. It features a common rail system (CRS) and an electronic control unit (ECU), which continuously monitors 6 | AgriNews | June 2020
engine conditions andadjusts fuel delivery to ensure optimum performance. The engine’s new aftertreatment system consists of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), similar to that used successfully on John Deere’s larger agricultural tractors. This operates automatically to produce lower levels of exhaust emissions and reduced noise levels, and meets all current requirements for Stage V emission standards. At the top of the John Deere compact tractor range, the new 4052M and 4052R receive a larger 2.1-litre, fourcylinder engine with DPF. This is the same as the existing engine on the biggest 4066M and 4066R models, which remain unchanged, while several of the smaller 2R and 3R Series tractors are also given new model numbers. In addition to the new engine, the 3R and 4R Series compact tractors will be equipped with a new eThrottle function integrated into the established eHydro transmission. This feature is designed make the tractor quieter and
more comfortable to use, as well as more fuel efficient. With the simple push of a button, engine speed is conveniently linked to the foot pedal position so that engine rpm and tractor speed can both be increased as the pedal is depressed. The latest 4R Series models can also now be equipped with a StarFire satellite receiver and AutoTrac Universal automatic steering system. This is designed to help operators achieve higher levels of accuracy and input cost savings when working with implements such as amenity turf sprayers, seeders and spreaders. On selected models, the award-winning Hitch Assist system makes coupling up implements and trailers to the tractor’s rear hitch or threepoint linkage quicker, easier and safer. Using this system, external switches mounted on the rear fender allow the operator to move the tractor backwards and forwards at a maximum speed of 12mm/ second, and raise or lower the hitch as required.

JCB has introduced the new order online option to support businesses with their plant requirements during the Covid-19 lockdown. Now Poole-based Focal Landscapes has purchased a JCB 8008 micro excavator and a HTD-5 tracked dumper direct from JCB via the website direct.jcb.com – with order to delivery taking less than a week. Focal Landscapes owner Marc Woodward said: “I discovered the option to buy online via Twitter. I then placed my order on the website and the machine was here in less than a week. Bath & West: A letter from our chairman As I sit here writing this letter, force of habit has made me look at the forecast for this week. It is an added irony, in a year when life as we know it has been turned on its head, that the forecast looks like perfect showing weather, with 20+ degrees and some sunshine at a time when we should be preparing to provide a display of the best of all that the West Country has to offer, in the context of a new three-day format. As you would expect, these last two months have been a very tough time for all of our team at the Showground and I would like to thank them all, under Rupert Cox’s leadership, for the incredibly positive and supportive way in which they have reacted to this crisis. Alan Lyons, our Head of Shows, and his team had prepared an exciting offering and had been busy preparing for the implementation of the Show before we had to make the painful decision to postpone and, subsequently, cancel this year’s showpiece event. Thank you to all our supporters, whether that are traders, exhibitors, sponsors and our paying public, for the way that you have maintained your patience and good humour at a time when no one fully understood the consequences of the events industry imploding within weeks. A special thanks to those who have donated their fees to the Society, or chosen to roll-over your investment to 2021’s Show – this level of generosity has been very much appreciated. What is clear is that, when we can re-open, the way in which we operate will be very different to the format that has prevailed to date. We are expecting to run both the Dairy Show (October), and Grassland & Grazing (in May next year) as trade shows with greater space between trade stands and one-way systems in place. Feedback from exhibitors has been that they are keen for the shows to go ahead and we would like to be able to deliver these for the benefit of the industry if at all possible. We are also talking to those who would normally rent the showground from us to seek to find ways to help them re-open their activities as we know how much our supporters value the range of events on the showground, all while adhering to the most up-to-date Government guidance. So please stay safe whilst enjoying the sunshine this week but remember to come back and join us at the 2021 Royal Bath & West Show from 3rd – 5th June with even more enterprising and innovative ways to help for our visitors to be informed and entertained. UHN Farm Machinery is extending its belt merger range with the introduction of the Merge Maxx 1090, which operates with a working width between 8.85 and 11.0 metres. The new model, which will be available from September 2020, follows the successful introduction of the Merge Maxx 950 (7.5 to 9.5 metre working width).
Pick-up and swath width can be adjusted to suit the quantity and type of forage material being harvested, thus enabling the number of passes and associated costs to be reduced. For lateral swaths, the width can be varied between 1.00 and 1.50m. For central swaths, it can be up to 2.20m in width.

Vicon introduces high-capacity trailed sprayers
A new load weighing device, from loading specialists Quicke, will help farmers accurately measure materials using a tractor mounted interface and app
V
icon has introduced two models of highcapacity trailed sprayer to join its existing iXtrack T3 and T4 versions. The new models are badged iXtrack T6, and are available with tank capacities of 6,400 and 7,400 litres, and the option of boom widths from 18m to 40m. These two ISOBUScompatible models now sit at the top of the Vicon range, and like their smaller stablemates use a singlespine chassis design offering high manoeuvrability, a low centre of gravity, and improved durability. Specification includes a suspended parallelogram rear frame to carry steel or aluminium boom types. The rear frame also remains active on the road, offering a high degree of cushioning for booms when folded – this is a feature particularly suited to tractors with higher road speeds. In-field, this design combines stability with soft boom balancing, to minimise spray height deviation above the crop canopy. This affords improved application accuracy through greater boom stability. 16 | AgriNews | June 2020

New M Series front loaders are light and versatile John Deere has launched the all-new M Series front loaders for tractors up to 155hp
F
ollowing the successful R Series announced in 2015, the extended John Deere range now includes an additional four models covering a variety of applications, from standard loader tasks to operations requiring premium performance and comfort. The M Series has been specifically designed for customers who need a versatile, lighter loader at an attractive price. For tighter working areas often found on mixed or livestock farms, the slim boom profile results in good front visibility to the bucket, attachment points and around the tractor. All models come with a strong mechanical self-levelling (MSL) system, which provides extra breakout force to completely fill the 18 | AgriNews | June 2020
bucket. With 20 per cent less rear ballast required and 20 per cent less weight than the R Series models, M Series loaders are quick and manoeuvrable in work, with the 603M model for example capable of raising a bucket in four seconds. All M Series loaders can be fitted with an optional suspension system, while the hydraulic components are routed internally to protect them from any potential impact. The loaders can use the same mounting frames as the established R Series, thus avoiding the need for fleet owners to adapt their existing tractors. The M Series models are also fully compatible with John
Deere front hitches, allowing full front axle oscillation and maximum steering angles while also leaving room to access the main tractor service points. UFU seeks meeting with economy minister to discuss RHI scheme
The Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU) has requested an urgent meeting with economy minister Diane Dodds, to discuss the NIRHI

he Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU) has requested an urgent meeting with economy minister Diane Dodds, to discuss the Northern Ireland Renewable Heat Incentive (NIRHI). Commenting after the UFU submitted their response to the Northern Ireland non-domestic Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme 2020 tariff review consultation, UFU deputy president Victor Chestnutt, reiterated the UFU’s concerns regarding the scheme. He said, “UFU members who availed of the scheme in good faith are continuing to endure neverending difficulties. Farming businesses are operating in an incredibly volatile market at the present time and many have been struggling financially for years because of the RHI scheme. The UFU’s position remains unchanged, we want to see the full reinstatement of a tariff that is reflective of the true costs and what this consultation
proposes is a drop in the ocean compared to what our members require.” Three and a half years have passed since Simon Hamilton introduced emergency tariff cuts in January 2017 and a series of further tariff cuts were rushed through since then. The UFU have held numerous meetings with Department of Economy (DfE) staff, gave evidence to a Public Inquiry, made a case to the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee, issued numerous press releases on the matter and are still experiencing a standoff regarding tariffs. “How can Northern Ireland boiler owners be facing this chaos whilst their counterparts in GB are receiving continued support?” said Chestnutt. “The Chancellor of the Exchequer announced in the 2020 Budget the introduction of a flexible, third allocation of tariff guarantees on their
non-domestic RHI scheme. Furthermore, Department for Business, Energy and Industry Strategy (BEIS) have launched a consultation on Future for Low Carbon Heat. BEIS are proposing amongst other things a Clean Heat Grant, which has pledged support for biomass in certain circumstances. Support will be offered via an upfront capital grant, to help address the barrier of upfront costs.” The Burglass Report confirmed the UFU’s view to the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee in April 2019, that boiler owners are reverting to fossil fuels on the back of these tariff cuts. Since then, the coronavirus pandemic has created a slump in fossil fuel prices with oil price predicted to remain at a low rate for a further three years at least, widening the gap in different types of fuel and driving more to the fossil fuel alternative

nprecedented demand for eggs has led Tesco to stock white eggs for the first time in more than 40 years. With more people now eating at home as well as baking more since the pandemic started, Tesco has seen demand for eggs rocket by 30%. Now, following an initial trial, Tesco will continue to sell white free range eggs in a major move that will not only satisfy the high demand from shoppers but will also help UK egg suppliers at this critical time. At the moment chicken farmers’ main outlet for white eggs are restaurants, especially fast food chains like McDonalds who use them in their Breakfast Wrap snack. eggs – which are generally medium sized – were popular in the UK but they fell out of favour by the end of the decade when shoppers began switching to the brown variety. The move was mainly due to misconceptions back in the late 70s that white eggs were of lower quality and even that they were bleached which has now been rebuffed. Since the 1980s the British industry has produced almost 100 per cent brown shelled eggs for high street retailers. Tesco eggs buying manager Megan Kilby said: “The initial trial during the lockdown has been a success and we will now be stocking white free range eggs for the first time in more than 40 years. “These eggs are used throughout the restaurant industry so shoppers can

In 2018, the Musso was totally revamped and a new generation was borne – Musso is now smarter, safer, and more stylish than ever. Musso had a complete re-design from the ground up, and now the only thing in common with its’ predecessor, is its name. Musso is an award-winning multi-role four-wheel drive pick-up, blending functionality with style and bold features that project stability and on-road presence. Its striking and impressive, giving Musso an immediate presence. The Musso has a tough, strong and value-for-money 4-wheel drive proposition. It’s an extremely competent multi-purpose truck with SsangYong values to the core - that is, comprehensively equipped, a sector-leading 7-year/150,000-mile warranty, plus a surprising level of interior refinement and great infotainment. working vehicle that also looks good. The exterior design of the Musso gives the vehicle a bold and muscular stance and adopts the purposeful front-end design of all new SsangYong vehicles. The doors are designed to cover the sills along the lower part of the body to ensure passengers don’t pick up dirt from the side of the vehicle when getting in and out, while bold 18-inch wheels on the Rebel and Saracen tell you this is no ordinary pick-up. Space Designed to carry passengers in comfort and transport loads securely, the SUV-based Musso combines a five-seat crew-cab body style with a workman-like load deck that will accommodate a full-sized Euro pallet in the short-bed, and the long-bed offers an additional 310mm in the back. The load deck affords an extremely useful cargo area that is large enough to carry a 1-tonne payload and equipped as standard with a tough fitted load liner, a 12V/120W power outlet and
rotating hooks to help strapdown loads such as tools and equipment on both short-bed and long-bed variants. Interior design cues Inside, Musso is exceptionally well equipped compared with other pick-ups, and as well as offering excellent shoulder and leg room front and rear, Nappa leather seats can be found on the top of the range models for added luxury and comfort. DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity feature across the range, while all but the entry level model feature a state-of-the-art infotainment system that includes an 8-inch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Wi-fi mirroring, or 9.2-inch screen with TomTom navigation on top line models. Total load capacity Most pick-ups cannot tow a trailer at maximum weight and carry a full payload at the same time, but Musso and Musso Rhino are different from most pick-ups. With a class-leading gross train weight of 6450kg (manual), 6750kg (automatic) and 6900kg (Rhino) Musso has the highest total load capacity of any pick-up on sale in the UK. It can tow 3.5-tonnes (automatic) concurrently to give the highest total load capacity in the segment.
