UK MANUFACTURING AND LIQUID MILK CONTRACTS SEE + 40% ROI

UK manufacturing and liquid milk contracts see +40 percent ROI when feeding rumen-protected fats

F

eedebciency, fertility improvements and milk production contribute to a +40 percent return on investment when feeding rumenprotected fats with milk at 40ppl At a milk spot price of 40ppl, UK dairy farmers can see a return on investment of 40 percent when feeding high-C16:0 feed fat supplements on manufacturing milk contracts and a return on investment of 42 percent when feeding calcium salt feed fat supplements on liquid contracts. Thesefigurescomefrom aperformance-to-financial correlation model developed by Volac Wilmar Feed Ingredients that weighs current feed prices and milk contracts against recent research data on cow performance when feeding rumen-protected fat supplements in either calcium salt or high-C16:0 form. “The continuous rise in feed commodity prices have many UK dairy farmers evaluating their rations for cost saving cutbacks. When looking down the feed budget sheet, feed fat supplements are going to be one of the big sticker items,” says Paul Fransen, the model developer and Business Development Manager for Volac Wilmar Feed Ingredients. “Research shows that fat and specificfattyacidsinfluence multiple areas of cow production influencingprofitability, soany changes to the ration needs to be calculated carefully and cautiously to prevent

costly production or fertility consequences.” Theinfluenceoffatandfatty acids on cow performance The return on investment when feeding rumen-protected fat supplements is multifactorial as a result of the various areas of cow performance thenutrientinfluences, says Dr Richard Kirkland, ruminant nutritionist and Global Technical Manager for Volac Wilmar Feed Ingredients. As a macronutrient, fat is energy dense with 500g of a fat supplement like Megalac increasing energy density by 0.5 MJ/kg DM. It is also a ‘safe’ ingredient in the rumen as it isn’t fermented like cereals so supplies energy without increasing risk of acidosis. In rumen-protected form, fat doesn’tinterferewithfibre digestion which otherwise reducesfeedebciencyandcan lead to milk fat depression. “Energydensitybenefits are seen particularly in early lactation rations as milk yield increases rapidly post-calving while dry matter and energy intakes rise at a slower rate. This leads to an ‘energy gap’ in early lactation when cows mobilise body fat and lose condition to supply the energy shortfall,” explains Dr Kirkland. “There is a clear correlation between loss of body condition through early lactation and conception ratetofirstservice–with research indicating conception

rate decreases by 10 percent for every 0.5-unit loss in body condition when measured on a five-pointscale.” Established UK research reported 9.4 fewer days open when cows were supplemented with Megalac compared to a non-fat supplemented ration, and a numerical 19day reduction was recorded in a further study from the University of Edinburgh. Costs per additional day open vary but typically range from around £2.50 to upwards of £5 per day depending on a range of cost elements. Lookingatspecificfattyacid profiles, researchfromDrAdam Lock’s group at Michigan State University, USA (MSU), has found that individual fatty acids partitionnutrientstodiaerent areas of cow performance throughout the lactation cycle. Oleic (C18:1) acid helps partition nutrients toward body fat stores, reducing body condition loss in the critical early lactation period while also improving production. C18:1 also improves total fat digestibility and can enhance fertility through improved egg and embryo development. For improving milk fat production and yield, C16:0 has been foundverybeneficial, however, research shows increased production in early lactation can come at the expense of additional body condition and weight loss so can be risky in early lactation.

FIRST APPEARANCE AT ROYAL HIGHLAND SHOW FOR M6-001 UTILITY SERIES

Kubota (UK) Ltd’s five-model M6-001 Utility series tractor range made its Royal Highland Show debut this week.

K

ubota(UK)Ltd’sfivemodel M6-001 Utility series tractor range makes its Royal Highland Show debut this week, on stand S-264. As the successor to the MGX range, the M6-001 Utility models span 104-143hp, and meet EU Stage V emissions thanks to an improved exhaust after-treatment package that contributes to lowering the cost of owneship. Short wheelbase models include the M6-101U and M6-111U. Both use a 3.8-litre Kubota V3800 four cylinder engine, producing maximum power of 104hp and 111hp respectively, with maximum torquefiguresof346Nmand 379Nm. These models weigh 4.3t and have a 2.54m wheelbase. M6-121U, M6-131U and M6-141U sit on a 2.68m wheelbase, and use Kubota’s 6.1-litre V6108 four cylinder engine. Power outputs are 123hp, 133hp and 143hp, with maximumtorquefiguresof 503Nm, 544Nm and 586Nm respectively. These three models weigh 4.8t. Engine technology on all models has seen an improvement in exhaust aftertreatment, with DOC and DPF performance increased to deliver greater operationalflexibilityand lower cost of ownership. DPF regeneration can now be achieved at a much lower

enginespeed–typically 1,200rpm down from 2,000rpm - and using a much lower working temperature of just 50 degrees C. The latter makes regeneration much easier to achieve with light engine loads, lower noise levels and a reduced fuel burn.

HOW SOARING PUMP PRICES COULD BE FUELLING SAFER DRIVING HABITS Soaring fuel costs have left a hole in the pocket of motorists across the country

S

oaring fuel costs have left a hole in the pocket of motorists across the country, but it could be having an unexpected positive impact on the safety of Britain’s roads. That’s according to latest research commissioned by the UK’s largest independent road safety charity, IAM RoadSmart, which has revealed that potentially millions of motorists have changed their driving habits for the better amid the fuel crisis. Of 1,004 motorists surveyed, 72 per cent stated that they had changed how they travel due to travel costs. Of this number, 38 per cent stated that they now drive more economically as a result of rising fuel costs, while almost oneinfive(19percent)have taken extra care to stick to the speed limit.

48 | AgriNews | July 2022

This respectively represents up to 12.5 million and 6 million of the 33 million people in possession of a full driving licence in the UK who have adopted slower or smoother driving habits in recent times. The devastating impact of driving too fast is demonstrated by Department for Transport statistics, which show that exceeding the speed limit was reported as a factor in 7 per cent of all accidents, but of these accidents 17 per cent were fatalities. In addition, exceeding the speed limit and travelling too fast for conditions were factors in 13 per cent of all accidents, and these accidents accounted for 27 per cent of all fatalities. Neil Greig, Director of Policy and Research at IAM RoadSmart commented: “The rising cost of fuel is yet

another added expenditure inthisdibcultcostofliving crisis, and our research demonstrates that many have been forced to rethink their drivinghabitsinaneaort to keep their fuel costs to a minimum. “Driving slower and more economically will no doubt help keep the pain at the pumps down, but another positive impact of this is, of course, road safety. We would urge those who have adopted slower and smoother driving habits to maintain these habits, regardless of fuel prices. This way, motorists will not only save money on fuel and travel greener, but also potentially save lives.” To learn more about IAM RoadSmart, visit www. iamroadsmart.com.

horley Group continue patronage of FA Trophy team Chorley FC Deal includes stadium naming rights at Chorley Group Victory Park Stadium Latest deal aligns with Isuzu UK’s commitment to be the driving force behind grassroots football 29thJune20–Chorley Group has extended their continued patronage of the FA Trophy team Chorley Football Club through to the end of the 2023/24 campaign. This latest agreement perfectly aligns with Isuzu UK’s recent announcement regarding the title sponsorship of The FA Trophy and The FA Vase. As long-time backers of Chorley FC, Chorley Group’sfinancial commitment to the club has not only resulted in the home ground being named Chorley Group Victory Park Stadium for the duration of the sponsorship, but also involves prominent pitch-side advertising boards as well as providing a sponsored vehicle for Director of Football Andy Preece. Chorley Group also supports the youth team, including providing

company vehicles for transportation when needed. Chorley Group, which operates an Isuzu dealership in Chorley, Lancashire, was founded as a family business back in 1989 and has been a committed sponsor of Chorley FC since 2010 along with contributing to numerous events and charities, with strong ties to both Chorley Youth Zone and Chorley Mencap. Since opening its doors over 30 years ago, Chorley Group has now grown extensively, employing nearly 300 people locally in the North West.

Isuzu UK said “The Chorley Group sponsorship of Chorley FC is a testament to the level of community involvement which can be made by members of Isuzu’s dealer network. This partnership clearly demonstrates the great synergy between a local community and their local Isuzu dealer, showing that supporting grassroots football is what Isuzu’s FA partnership is all about.”

Commenting on the continued patronage from Chorley Group, Terry Robinson, Chief Executive ObcerofChorleyFCsaid: “This sponsorship once again shows how Chorley Group supports the local Adam Turner, Managing town and Chorley FC, and Director of Chorley Group, the continued funding of the has said: “We are proud Chorley Group Victory Park to continue supporting Stadium for the 2023/24 the Chorley FC team and seasonshowsconfidencein keep our local community the club going forward.
