BE VIGILANT FOR COCCIDIOSIS IN CALVES AROUND WEANING

As the warmer summer weather dries out ground soaked by the heavy UK rainfall during May, cattle produced urged to be vigilant.

A

s the warmer summer weather dries out ground soaked by the heavy UK rainfall during May, cattle producers are being urged to be vigilant for any coccidiosis outbreaks in calves around weaning. The summer months are a peak risk period for coccidiosis outbreaks in spring born calves, typically affecting animals between three weeks and six months of age. “Coccidiosis breakdowns in young calves are common during the summer, particularly around weaning. Calves’ immunity to the Eimeria parasite is quite variable at this time of year and the climatic conditions have been perfect for coccidial oocysts to remain viable in the farm environment,” warns Dr Kat Baxter-Smith, veterinary adviser with MSD Animal Health. Dr Baxter-Smith explains that any passive immunity to coccidial oocysts gained from dam colostrum starts to wear off once the calves reach three weeks of age. The majority of spring born calves are well beyond that age now so are particularly vulnerable over the next few months. “However, while most ruminant animals excrete some coccidial oocysts in their faeces most of the time, not all farms see clinical disease. The outcome of any infection in calves is a balance between the infection pressure from coccidial oocysts in the environment, calf immunity and stress factors such as overstocking, poor hygiene or adverse weather events.”

4 | AgriNews | July 2021

She adds that good management of coccidia means helping calves to avoid disease and any growth setbacks while ensuring youngstock get enough exposure to the parasite to develop good immunity. “In ideal conditions, sound hygiene and management practices can control the level of oocyst challenge in the environment (see side panel). But on most farms, strategic use of anticoccidial treatments will be required to manage the challenge and allow immunity to develop without loss of performance or disease. “With most immune adults excreting only a very few oocysts into the environment, it is infections in calves that result in very high levels of oocyst output. This causes heavy potential infectivity in the environment, leading to higher challenges and clinical disease in subsequent groups of youngstock. “Anticoccidial treatments should therefore be targeted at youngstock; to allow exposure, but also to remove the parasite before there is any impact on productivity – and before further environmental contamination occurs,” says Dr Baxter-Smith. “Timing of coccidiosis treatment is therefore crucial,” she stresses. “You have to treat only once the calf is infected but before its gut is damaged. This means detailed historical records of previous disease outbreaks are valuable, so always try to keep calves in agerelated groups and treat all calves in those groups at the right time.” She adds that treatment options

for youngstock include triazinone derivatives such as diclazuril (oral drench). Calves with clinical signs of disease may also need other supportive treatments until the gut damage has had time to heal. “Oral drenches such as Vecoxan® – which recently joined the MSD Animal Health portfolio of enteric products – are generally the most convenient way of ensuring that each calf receives the correct dose at the right time. “Easy-to-administer as a single oral dose, Vecoxan® is a flexible coccidiosis management solution that can be used in calves of any weight, in any management system and without any environmental restrictions or meat withdrawal period. In addition, its strategic use with all young animals in a group allows natural immunity to develop in your youngstock and there’s no need to dilute manure from treated animals before spreading1.” Managing calf coccidiosis at grass · Avoid overstocking and stress · Keep youngstock in tight age groups (ideally no more than 2 weeks difference across the group) · Keep feed and water troughs clean and clear of faecal contamination · Only turn youngstock out onto fresh pasture, not previously used that season by other calves or lambs · Draw on your farm history and use the available anticoccidial treatments strategically

“UK Farmcare can provide support with this if candidates don’t currently have contact with a suitable livestock veterinary practice in their local area of England. The next step is to access the online training course and then pass a test that assesses understanding,” says Ms Bowen.

These job opportunities have been created following approval by the Animal & Plant Health Agency (APHA) last November to allow paraprofessional staff to support vets in carrying out TB testing in England. “Since we started publicising the ATT opportunity on behalf of the veterinary community back in the spring, we have seen a surge of interest in the role,” says Kate Bowen from UK Farmcare. She adds that there are now 49 fully authorised ATTs in England with another 21 TB testing under veterinary supervision and three undergoing the theory part of the training. Ms Bowen says that anyone

applicants must find a veterinary practice to provide the direct supervision they need during the practical phase of the training.

by the APHA.

“There are also certain minimum educational requirements (at least three graded GCSEs or equivalent in English, Maths and a science or food production subject). Applicants also need to be able to demonstrate at least six months cattle handling experience,” she adds. Following a successful ‘Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)’ check,

Veterinary practices sponsoring ATT applicants must already provide TB testing services for both beef and dairy cattle – and have enough TB testing vets available to allow one to be able to supervise training on a one-to-one basis for a few weeks. Additional candidates keen to explore this interesting new job opportunity can either contact their local veterinary practice or register their interest on the UK Farmcare website at: https://ukfarmcare.com/anJuly 2021 | AgriNews | 5

iverse species swards that fulfil Stewardship requirements can be used to rejuvenate soils whilst also generating good returns from forage production.

According to Field Options director Francis Dunne, integrating two- or three-year leys of this kind into arable rotations delivers greater benefits than is possible with shorter term cover crops. Through selection of the most appropriate forage crop mixtures for a given rotation, the impact should be positive for soil health, wildlife, and all following crops. As such, he says diverse species swards could become an important part of future arable farming practice as new environmental land management schemes (ELMS) come into being.

“There is an opportunity to ‘turbocharge’ your soils This was the message through the use of diverse from Field Options at species swards,” says Groundswell 2021, with the Francis. “Putting land into company highlighting results Stewardship need not result from its own dedicated in sacrificing productivity. It trials programme for forage can be a ‘win-win’ option, crop mixtures such as its whereby selecting the best legume and herb rich GS4 performing varieties within Eco-Pasture and SW7 the permitted species Eco-Meadow for arable can radically improve reversion. field performance whilst

still allowing Stewardship payments to be claimed. “A mixture like GS4 EcoPasture has a broad range of grasses, legumes and herbs, but with all varieties selected for performance and compatibility, so it will provide high quality forage for grazing or cutting over two or three years, or longer. The performance capabilities of these swards also make them suitable for use outside of any Stewardship scheme where sward diversity is required.” At Groundswell 2021, Field Options showed the results of a number of trials on diverse species swards. In addition to demonstrating the value of species diversity, the trials highlight the value of inoculating clover with the ideal rhizobium and show how soil biological activity can be accelerated by introducing a range of mycorrhiza and rhizobacteria with the diverse species sward.

MAKE MAGNESIUM SUPPLEMENTATION PART OF GRASS TETANY PREVENTION

With the right management plan in place, grass tetany is preventable for beef, dairy and sheep farmers.

W

ith the right management plan in place, grass tetany is preventable for beef, dairy and sheep farmers. Dr Alison Bond, nutritionist for Rumenco, outlines what to include. As grass growth begins to pick up, beef, dairy and sheep producers need to implement strategic practices to prevent grass tetany, says Dr Alison Bond, nutritionist for Rumenco. “Grazed grass is a great feed source but very low in dry matter,” she says. “This means some of the nutrient levels are diluted and it can be difficult for animals to eat sufficient levels, in particular, magnesium intake can be low resulting in magnesium deficiency, otherwise known as grass staggers, grass tetany or hypomagnesaemia.” While all grazing livestock are vulnerable to grass tetany if a magnesium deficiency is present, beef and dairy cows four to eight weeks post-calving and ewes three to four weeks post-lambing are at most risk as energy stores are stressed approaching peak lactation. “True to being referred to as grass staggers, tell-tale signs of magnesium deficiency are excitement and muscular spasms in stock. Subclinical cases typically result in decreased dry matter intakes, milk yields and body condition,” says Dr Bond. “But unfortunately, the first sign of grass tetany is typically a dead

8 | AgriNews | July 2021

animal, often with froth from the mouth and nose and signs of ground paddling.”

While salt aids in magnesium absorption, potassium and nitrogen block it.

Research indicates that 19 percent of dairy farms and 23 percent of suckler beef farms experience grass tetany. In dairy herds, 30 percent of cases result in death, with a conservative cost of approximately £2 million per annum in the UK.

“High potassium forages or fields that have been treated with nitrogen and potassium fertilisers can imbalance and interfere with magnesium absorption. If you are going to fertilise, then don’t put animals that are at high risk on to them,” says Dr Bond.

“Grass tetany is a common disease during the spring grass flush that results in loss of animals every year – however, it is completely preventable with the right management in place,” says Dr Bond. Below, she outlines six management practices to include in a grass tetany prevention plan. Offer supplementary salt At the very least, grazing stock need to be supplemented with salt since the absorption of magnesium from the rumen is dependent upon sodium. “Research has shown that without adequate sodium in the animal’s blood, the body will grab onto the most available cation, in this case, magnesium, followed by calcium. Therefore, salt licks can be a valuable supplement to ruminants grazing pasture low in sodium to help prevent grass tetany from occurring,” says Dr Bond. Minimise use of nitrogen and potassium fertilisers

High potassium will also negatively affect magnesium uptake by plants and the availability of the forage magnesium to the animal, with recommendations that the potassium level in grass should not exceed 2.5 percent. Choose your fields carefully for grazing. Not only will a field’s fertiliser programme impact magnesium levels, so will the age of the ley and species within it. “Younger, faster growing leys can present more magnesium deficiencies than older, slower growing pastures,” explains Dr Bond. “This risk can be minimised by supplementing with a palatable magnesium source or by allocating new leys to less vulnerable stock until grass growth has slowed down.” An alternative way to increase the magnesium supply to grazing stock is through the use of clovers, which contain two times the amount of magnesium than grasses.

Manitou Group is expanding its NewAg XL telehandler range with a new, high performance model designed for very intensive applications.

M

anitou Group, a worldwide reference in material handling, personnel lifting and earthmoving, is expanding its NewAg XL telehandler range with a new, high-performance model designed for very intensive applications. After launching the MLT 841 and 1041 telehandlers at the end of 2020, the Group launches the MLT961-160 V+ L, the most powerful model in the NewAg XL range. This telehandler with leveling can handle loads of up to 6 t for a lifting height of 9 m. Intended for large farms, cooperatives and agroindustry, but also waste disposal sites, this model is available in two versions: with a Stage V / Final Tier 4 engine (MLT) for European and American markets, and a Stage IIIA version (MLT-X) for the restof the world. Outstanding performance With a new 156 hp engine delivering 805 Nm of torque at only 1,350 rpm and a hydraulic flow of 200l/min, this model gives a very high performance, even at low engine speeds. A new 4,500 L bucket, specifically designed and approved for the new MLT 961-160 V+ L, strengthens performance still further. With a width of 2.70 m, which is wider than the machine, this bucket allows users to avoid 12 | AgriNews | July 2021

driving over the material while increasing work output. The CVT M-Vario Plus transmission offers theuser the choice of two modes with a maximum speed of 40 km/h. Comfort mode provides a smoothride for more precision, and dynamic mode generates faster acceleration for greater productivity. Thedrawbar pull has also improved, increasing by more than 30% (compared with the previous MLT 961version) for even greater efficiency. Arnaud Sochas, Product Manager, said: “The new engine delivers10% more power than the previous version and a torque increase of 50%. Combined with the high-capacity 4,500 L bucket, this comprehensive machine/ attachment solution ensures a very high workoutput in the most intensive loading and recovery applications.” To achieve even greater gains, the High View camera option, fitted to the boom head, provides a perfect view inside the trailer to optimize filling operations. A very high level of comfort To reduce noise pollution and fatigue experienced during intensive operations, the MLT 961-160 V+ L is equipped with one of the quietest cabins on the market. Comparable to those of high-range tractors, this cabin reduces noise levels to just 69 dbA. Safety is also enhanced,

with lighting under the door, which improves visibility on the Easy-Step when getting in and out of the driver's cabin, even in the dark. In another development that provides better visibility, the cabin has been repositioned higher up for an optimal view all around the machine. Available optionally or as standard on the Platinum finish, a new adaptive air suspension seat with heating and electric lumbar adjustment reduces vibrations by more than 50% for optimal protection of the operator's back. To reduce fatigue in the cabin even more, the JSM Autopower function allows the operator to control the engine speed directly with the joystick without using the accelerator pedal or the manual accelerator. Specific storage spaces are provided to enhance user comfort, including a tool box fitted under the cabin for easier access. For peace of mind while working, users can rest assured that their machine is connected as standard, allowing the dealer to easily carry out diagnostics remotely, so users benefit from improved service and have better control over the costs related to the use of their machine. In addition, Manitou Group offers a comprehensive

LAUNCH OF MLT 961 NEWAG XL TELEHANDLER

Outstanding performance with a new 156HP engine delivering 805NM of torque at only 1350 rpm range of services associated with this model, including a maintenance contract on all parts or even a warranty extension of up to six years or 6,000 hours. A reduced TCO for greater profitability. Thanks to the numerous innovations on this NewAg XL model, the MLT 961-160 V+ L offers one of the lowest TCOs (total cost of ownership) on the market, with savings of €500/year* compared to the previous model. The reduction in fuel

consumption is significant, with 10% less compared to the MLT 961 Stage IV. Maintenance is simplified with a rapid-opening cleaning hatch in front of the radiator. To reduce maintenance costs, an integrated air pre-filter is positioned on the engine hood and hydraulic oil change intervals are now 2,000 hours. To reduce the TCO further, options such as Ecostop (configurable automatic engine stop) and the centralized automatic greasing system are also available.

IAN FORMAN - NSTS MANAGER Crop assurance scheme requirements for pesticide application equipment (PAE) are overall very straightforward with the annual testing of the main farm sprayer and, for those growing root crops, nematicide applicators and fogging machines too. For some of the other machines working and those that are also working in other sectors it is not always quite so clear. As you will be aware, annual testing relates to PAE used in food production, but you may also be using a weed wiper, or even a small sprayer only used for jobs such as spraying grass or game cover plots, where the sprayer would not need to be tested annually. Other sectors which include livestock assurance schemes and also amenity and horticulture, are required to follow the legal requirements of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD). The SUD states that for sprayers over 3 metres, air blast sprayers, train and aircraft sprayers, the first test isn’t due until it is 5 years old, and then must be tested every 3 years. Booms 3 metres and under need to be tested every 6 years, but again

14 | AgriNews | July 2021

not until they are 5 years old. Other equipment that also falls into this last category include micro-granular applicators applying Avadex, slug pellet applicators, weed wipers, seed treating equipment, along with a range of other specialised application machinery. Operator check sheets are available for some of this equipment on the NSTS website and we would recommend using these if you are not having the machines tested annually. All handheld equipment, including knapsacks, do not need to be tested, but must be inspected on a regular basis, repaired if required, and a record kept of the inspection. With this in mind, NSTS have a knapsack check sheet available on the website. NSTS also promotes the accurate application of fertiliser for a variety of reasons. These include the need to protect the environment and waterways around the UK, along with field margins and hedgerows, which all help towards a more sustainable future for land managers and could become even more important as the new ELM Scheme is rolled out over

the next few years. The second factor is an economical one, most farms will spend as much on fertiliser as they do on pesticides and so accurate application is key. The NSTS spreader tray test will show precisely how evenly a product is being spread across the full working width of the machine. Thecoefficient of variation (CV) is calculated, with the purpose of achieving a CV below 10%, a very good spread pattern. With a CV of 20%, you may start to see striping in the crop, and the financial impact could be as much as £17/ha. The cost of the test can be recouped very quickly if the spreader is found to be spreading unevenly and then adjusted to give a much more even spread pattern. If you would like further information on any of the test procedures, contact NSTS at info@nsts.org.uk, or go to the website, www.nsts.org. uk where you can search for a Test Centre near you and arrange a test on your machine to ensure it is applying all your fertiliser products on target and evenly across the field.

NEW HYBRID BARLEY COULD STRIKE A CHORD WITH GROWERS

Tramspread has launched a new remote control for engine driven pumps that operates using Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM).

N

ew hybrid barley could strike a chord with growers in the north and west and on heavy land A new hybrid winter feed barley being launched this autumn, which combines high yield with high grain quality, could hold particular appeal for growers in the north and the west of the country, as well as on heavier land, says its breeder. SY Thunderbolt, from Syngenta, is new on the AHDB Recommended List (RL) for 2021/22, where it has a UK treated yield of 107% of control varieties and a grain specific weight of 69.6 kg/hl, says Syngenta seeds technical manager, Paul Roche. This should give growers high confidence for achieving grain buyers’ specific weight thresholds, he says, particularly since further AHDB data showed SY Thunderbolt delivered above 69 kg/hl consistently over the last three years. But as well as its headline figures, Mr Roche says its consistent yields of 107% across all UK regions, combined with it being one of the earliest maturing varieties on the AHDB RL, could make SY Thunderbolt a particularly 18 | AgriNews | July 2021

attractive option in the north and west regions. Further data available on the AHDB RL also shows it has the highest yield figure on heavy soils, at 111% of control varieties, he points out. “We know that winter barley matures several weeks later in the north,” says Mr Roche, “so early ripening is important here, as well as in the west. “An early harvest also helps to spread summer workloads and gives an opportunity for early cashflow. It is also especially useful if following barley with oilseed rape. “The oilseed rape price is very healthy at the moment, and soil moisture is critical for the crop’s germination. If you can get oilseed rape up and away early while soil moisture is still available it stands a better chance against the first wave of cabbage stem flea beetle.” For growers on heavy land which is typically favoured by black-grass, Mr Roche says the combination of the top yield figure of SY Thunderbolt on heavy soils and the ability of hybrid barley to suppress black-grass with its hybrid vigour, means SY Thunderbolt looks a good fit in this situation as well. Hybrid barley has also been shown to suppress ryegrass and brome,

he says, and competes not only through its vigorous growth above ground but also through its vigorous roots. Syngenta marketing manager for hybrid barley, Sarah Hughes, agrees and says several of the benefits of SY Thunderbolt are very relevant to current farming challenges. Mrs Hughes explains: “Recent Syngenta research found that farm profitability, soil health, reducing fertilisers, loss of crop protection products, and reduced labour, ranked among farmers’ drivers for the next few years. “As well as vigorous growth helping to suppress certain grass weeds in the face of limited herbicide options, and early maturity spreading harvest labour requirements and aiding timely oilseed rape establishment against cabbage stem flea beetle, the larger root mass of hybrids may enhance scavenging for nutrients and water. “The return on investment from feed barley is very attractive at current grain prices. However, recognising the challenges that growers face, we will be maintaining the 2021 seed price for hybrid barley at the same level as last year,” Mrs Hughes concludes.

SPEARHEAD CROWNS ATTLEFIELD MACHINERY DEALER OF THE YEAR 2020 A specialist machinery supplier near Daventry has been named Spearhead’s Dealer of the Year 2020

A

specialist machinery supplier near Daventry has been named Spearhead’s Dealer of the Year 2020. Noted for tremendous energy and after sales support, the owner, Henry White, is just 29 years old. Attlefield Farm Machinery first stocked Spearhead equipment three years ago. During the last 18 months, their sales performance placed them at the top of Spearhead’s league table. Henry White comes from a well-known family with industry heritage. His father, Patrick White, runs PJ Services, the well-known international haulage company. The White family also run farms in Poland. They used a 450-9S flex-wing topper to bring the farm back into production after 20 years of being fallow. As a youngster, this, Henry says first sparked his interest in the product. An impressive single site dealer In his early 20s, Henry started selling quad bikes. Today, he operates from brand new purpose-built premises with Spearhead equipment at the helm. The Hellidon site includes fully stocked showrooms, offices, and wellrun workshops. For a fledgling dealer, the level of investment 20 | AgriNews | July 2021

and product knowledge is impressive. After sales service is a huge focus for Attlefield Farm Machinery. Stocking plenty of Spearhead parts, they strive to get machinery back in the field quickly. They also deliver parts - next day – with regular demand from across the UK and Europe. Notably, Henry says: “Holding a continual stock of the renowned Multicut 460, 620, and the impressive new Sniper series flail mowers has been key to our success. They are the type of item you must be able to supply immediately.” Attlefield and Spearhead teamwork Attlefield Farm Machinery’s success is also down to the fantastic relationship between themselves and Spearhead. Working closely with Jack Norton (Spearhead Area Sales Manager) Henry is always on the front foot with Spearhead developments. He is also in daily contact with Steven Nel (Spearhead Parts Manager) in Spearhead’s parts department, ensuring he is carrying the correct items to support Spearhead’s wide range of products. The dealer’s success has been helped by nurturing this teamwork. Says Henry:

“I’m delighted Attlefield Farm Machinery has been named Spearhead Dealer of the Year.

It’s great recognition for the team here and I’m happy to keep building on the high standards that we have set ourselves. To my advantage, Spearhead takes centre stage here and I believe we give the brand the energy and attention it rightly deserves. There’s incredible demand for robust mowing and cutting machines across the UK. I couldn’t be prouder to align my business with the quality of Spearhead.” Jack Norton recently presented Attlefield Farm Machinery’s trophy to Henry. Spearhead nominates a Dealer of the Year annually, basing the decision on dealer promise and success. Spearhead Machinery Ltd was established in 1988. The company specialises in the design and manufacture of rotary mowers and mulchers, flail mowers, and reach arm mowers for vegetation management and control. Spearhead machines are designed to last. Built with no shortage of strength, they are renowned as extremely tough pieces of equipment with an extensive service life.

TRACTORS AND FORAGE HARVESTERS TAKE THE LEAD John Deere Machine Sync enables machines to exchange data on the move and allows operators to guide a tractor and trailer

J

ohn Deere Machine Sync enables machines to exchange data on the move and allows combine operators to guide a tractor and trailer alongside the harvester. This unique system is now also available for forage harvesters and tractors to take control during other crop unloading operations. Machine Sync was introduced in 2012 and John Deere remains the only supplier of an integrated system. The technology is especially useful during night-time operations and long working days. The global navigation satellite system (GNNS) based synchronisation allows combines to automatically control the speed and travel 28 | AgriNews | July 2021

direction of tractors and trailers relative to the combine. Machine Sync therefore makes harvesting safer and reduces stress for the operators. It also eliminates waste during unloading and avoids damage to both machines and crops, even at higher driving speeds. The technology is not just applicable to combine harvesters but also to all harvesting processes where crops are continuously loaded into trailers. As a result, John Deere is now offering Machine Sync for use on self-propelled forage harvesters and tractors. In particular, customers working with trailed elevator machinery harvesting

potatoes, carrots and vegetables will benefit from this advanced technology. The system also delivers significant assistance and productivity gains to vegetable growers during planting applications. For operation, Machine Sync requires JDLink telematics, a StarFire satellite receiver and a Gen4 Premium display with automation activation. Most customers would select all these components exfactory when ordering a new tractor and/or self-propelled machine, although retrofitting is also possible.

COMMENT: WHY FAIR TRADE IS PREFERRED TO FREE TRADE

By Mark Williams, chief executive, British Egg Industry Council

B

y Mark Williams, chief executive, British Egg Industry Council

The UK and Australia reached an agreement in principle on a free trade agreement (FTA) last month. However, many SPS issues remain unresolved. It will be for both sides to find a fair and balanced resolution to these issues as further details on the FTA are developed. The UK Government set a target to secure FTAs covering around 80% of UK trade within the next three years, with the Department of International Trade, and that the UK will use its voice as an independent trading nation to “champion free trade, fight protectionism, and remove barriers at every opportunity”. At the same time, the Government has said it wishes to build upon and improve the UK’s reputation for having some of the highest standards of animal welfare in the world. Therein lies the issue; if the UK does not stand by our farmers, and consumers, against low-or-no animal welfare quality produce, that serves only to undermine the UK’s reputation for protecting animal welfare. The Government has insisted that there will be safeguards in place, and there will be time to allow farmers across different sectors to adjust to the new trading environment. While there is not a concern on egg products coming from Australia, often the first FTA sets the direction of travel, which is why beef farmers are so concerned.

30 | AgriNews | July 2021

The BEIC has been clear about the consequences for our industry and consumers of removing tariffs on imports of eggs and egg products, where those imports would be illegal to produce in the UK. We made and won the argument for our sector when it came to the UK Global Tariff, and we will fight for the same outcome when it comes to the FTAs the UK strikes with countries and trading blocs around the world. In 2012, conventional cages were banned. They were replaced with enriched cages, which gave birds more space and height, plus the addition of perches, a nesting area and scratching area. The UK led the way in developing the ‘colony’ enriched cage system to allow birds to access a greater area. The British egg industry invested £400m in the move to enriched cages, plus the additional measures required for non-cage birds. The move to barn systems to meet retailers’ ‘cage-free’ commitments will cost the industry another £250-300 million. We cannot and will not shy away from highlighting the double standard of wanting to raise standards of animal welfare domestically, but championing the removal of tariffs with countries that have animal welfare legislation that is weaker than in the UK, or non-existent. A far more equitable cause would be for the UK Government to champion ‘fair trade’, rather than ‘free trade’, because unless global standards of animal welfare exist that create a level playing field, free trade across the

board would result in domestic production being undercut and undermined – which will have disastrous consequences in the medium to long term. Therefore, the BEIC is lobbying so hard on the industry’s behalf to ensure that our industry is not undermined in this rush for ‘free trade’. As noted in last month’s update, the Defra Animal Welfare Action Plan stated that Government “… are currently considering the case for introducing further reforms, on areas such as the use of farrowing crates for pigs and cages for laying hens”. This will be via a public consultation to examine a ban on the use of enriched cages for laying hens and include rearing cages, plus other cage systems used in agriculture. However, the UK Government has not committed to banning imports of eggs or egg products from countries that operate cage systems, that are used in Mexico, India, and many other countries in the cross hairs of the Department for International Trade when it comes to FTAs. Unless they did so, our pricesensitive food service and processing sectors, which account for some 40% of UK egg production, would immediately be under huge pressure. Egg processors would struggle to compete, potentially shutting off the outlet for second quality eggs from all systems of production, including free-range.

POULTRY HOUSING PLANS AFFECTED AS COST OF MATERIALS CONTINUE TO SOAR Building materials are in short supply and quickly rising in price, making planning new poultry housing difficult.

B

uilding materials are in short supply and quickly rising in price, making planning new poultry housing difficult Any poultry farmer with plans to build new poultry housing or refurbish existing units should carefully consider how the fluctuating cost of raw materials could affect their project. From the ground up, everything that goes into the building of poultry housing is being impacted. Groundworks and construction companies have been experiencing continuous price increases since summer 2020. Steel sheeting has almost doubled in price and shortages of fixings and ironmongery are commonplace. Timber and cement have also risen in price in the past year. THE LOCKDOWN EFFECT Several factors have created these unprecedented market conditions, including a boom in house building in countries around the world, lower levels of scrap and post-Brexit delays on imported goods. Last summer timber was in high demand as people embarked on DIY projects in their homes and gardens, and more recently the resumption of house building has tightened availability of materials.

The annual shutdown of European sawmills that happens every summer is compounding the issue further. Construction companies are attempting to reserve materials from suppliers, with quotas being placed on individual firms, which impacts the delivery of projects on time and within budgets. THE BREXIT EFFECT As the UK continues to settle into its new relationship with the EU post-Brexit, there is a growing impact on goods being imported from Europe. Some materials used in construction such as silicone are now being restricted, with supplies being allocated to repeat customers, although far less is being brought in than to meet demand. Once a building is constructed the impact continues with the equipment supplied, many of which comes in from Europe or further afield. With container prices double what they were last year, this increase gets passed on to the end product. Feeders, drinker, fans, bulk feed bins are all affected by the market volatility and longer lead times. Matt Jones is managing director at Knights Construction Group. He said the price of some materials was changing almost hourly. “The majority

of suppliers are only holding prices for 24 hours. Steelwork has increased another £35 per tonne from the last increase from British Steel on 18 May when an increase of £100/t was announced.” PRICES CHANGING HOURLY Jones said basic hollow steel sections are now over £1,500/t, with a further £100/t increase in July and possibly another £100 in August being mooted. In addition, there have been “dramatic and unforeseen rises” in cut and bent reinforcements used for groundworks. “Two staples of the construction industry are timber and cement and we have seen timber increase by over 30% in the last month alone, whilst cement is more difficult to obtain then any time since the second world war,” said Jones. The boom in the housing sector means cement (and therefore mortar and concrete) is effectively being rationed. “We are also finding increases in costs and scarcity impacting non-material elements of construction,” added Jones. “For example, it is taking up to 10 weeks to obtain cabins for sites and all materials from outside the UK have longer forecasted lead in times, coupled with dramatic cost increases.” July 2021 | AgriNews | 31

“The Japanese market will now be able to enjoy more of our unique produce, adding to an already varied collection of UK food, such as pork, beef and lamb, already available to its customers.

Japan is renowned internationally for its stringent food safety and import control regime. With consumption of poultry on the rise in Japan, this market could become a promising new target for UK poultry meat exporters.

“We are working hard to open new markets for our agrifood businesses, and this is a significant opportunity for the UK poultry sector.”

British Poultry Council Chief Executive, Richard Griffiths said: “The British Poultry Council welcomes the exciting news of British export market access for poultry meat to Japan, the world’s third largest economy. Our industry has worked closely with Government to open doors and create new opportunities for British poultry meat businesses that produce safe, affordable and nutritious food to world-class standards. We look forward to carrying on pursuing new markets to continue putting UK poultry meat on every table around the world.”

The market opening follows a series of complex negotiations over the last Victoria Prentis, Food Minister, four years between the UK said: “Our high-quality poultry and Japanese officials to with its exceptional flavour is agree specific animal health renowned around the world, requirements. STEVE BIRCHALL FOUNDER AND OWNER OF STEVE BIRCHALL POULTRY SERVICES

“It’s not the most glamourous job, but we take price in what we do and the end result is rewarding” WHAT IS YOUR JOB IN A NUTSHELL? I am the founder and owner of Steve Birchall Poultry Services and I have three teams who travel the country cleaning all types of poultry houses. We even strip wash and rebuild traditional free range units, sell second hand diesel washers and supply a range of government approved soaps and disinfectants to your customers. HOW DID YOU END UP WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

At a young age I was always on my grandad’s allotment, after school and at weekends helping out, or as he would call it “being a pain”. I had a fascination with the fancy fowl he kept; he taught me the basics, taught me to care.

at christmas. Working with Shaver breeds and broilers for Moy Park, I was farm manager for the last 8 years of my employment there.

So, in 1970 aged 15 and much to my dad’s disapproval, I left secondary school and went to start my working life at Maple Leaf Hatcheries in Lancashire, I attended Hutton Agricultural College on day release. Maple Leaf was local and to this day I still live in the area. I started work on one of their breeder sites and continued with the same company for the next 15 years.

During my time at Maple Leaf, I got to know many poultry farmers and one asked me if I fancied washing his poultry house for him. And so it began. I invested in a small van and with a 1500psi electric washer, off I went. As i got busier, I started to employ people to help. In the beginning it was mainly broiler sites but the expansion of traditional free-range and now multi-tier systems means those now make up most of our customer base.

I worked on caged sites, broiler sites, rearing farms and even did turkeys

In 1985, Maple Leaf closed and I was made redundant.

We travel all over the country keeping the poultry industry clean.

BRP TO INTRODUCE ELECTRIC MODELS BY THE END OF 2026

BRP to invest £300 million over the next five years to electrify its existing product lines by the end of 2026

T

he first product is expected to be introduced to the market within the next two years, followed by a rapid roll-out across all product lines. BRP is developing its Rotax modular electric powerpack technology in-house which will be leveraged across all product lines. BRP is creating an Electric Vehicle Development Centre in Canada, which will focus on the “energy side”: the charger and the battery pack, as well as the complete integration into the vehicle, and a second pole of development in Austria, which will focus on the “torque side”: the inverter and the high performance electric motor. BRP is actively recruiting to expand its EV team of experts. BRP announced its five-year plan where it will offer electric models in each of its product lines by the end of 2026. To achieve this, BRP plans to invest $300M over five years in product development, specialised equipment, infrastructure, production tooling and facilities. “We have always said electrification was not a question of ‘if’ but a question of ‘when’. Today, we’re very excited to unveil more details of our plan to deliver market-shaping products that will enhance the consumer experience by offering new

electric options,” said José Boisjoli, President and CEO. “We are leveraging our engineering know-how and innovation capabilities to define the best strategy for developing electric-powered products,” he added. After developing and evaluating several concepts, BRP has made the bold decision to develop its Rotax modular electric powerpack technology which will be leveraged across all product lines enhancing the consumer experience by offering new electric options. To achieve this, BRP is expanding its Rotax electric power unit development infrastructure in Gunskirchen, Austria, and is also creating the BRP Electric Vehicle Development Centre, located in its hometown of Valcourt, Quebec, Canada. This facility will feature state-of-the-art equipment, including several sophisticated test benches and dynamometers, plus an ultramodern robotised manufacturing cell for electric batteries. “We are thrilled to create our EV expertise centre, taking steps into the world of electrification,’’ said Bernard Guy, Senior Vice-President, Global Product Strategy. “Experts on our EV team will feel the agility of a startup environment but will benefit from BRP’s financial resources

and state-of-the-art equipment to design our in-house technology,” he added. BRP’s electric path In early 2019, BRP acquired assets of Alta Motors, an electric motorcycle manufacturer, and commercialised the Rotax Sonic E-Kart, which is currently in operation at the Rotax MAX Dome in Linz, Austria. A few months later, it showcased e-concepts at Club BRP 2019 to give a glimpse of what the future could hold for both its current product lines and for other potential segments. BRP has produced several batteryelectric, hybrid-electric and even fuel cell-electric vehicles over the years. Today’s announcement brings BRP’s electric journey further into focus, with a clear vision and firm plans to roll out its electric products. Expanding BRP’s electric vehicle development team The R&D team is expanding quickly, and BRP is recruiting for several positions as it moves to the next phase of its electric propulsion technology development. With involvement from Quebec, Austria, Finland and the United States, BRP’s top talent worldwide, including hundreds of engineers and specialised technicians, will work together to develop and produce electric vehicles at BRP.
