Supplementary seeder range adds versatility to Kuhn Pneumatic drills

Kuhn has introduced a range of supplementary seeders that can be fitted to its Venta, Espro and Aurock pneumatic drills

K

UHN has introduced a range of supplementary seeders that can be fitted to its Venta, Espro and Aurock pneumatic drills to facilitate progressive practices such as companion cropping or apply fertilisers, granular herbicides or slug pellets whilst drilling. The smallest model in the SH seeder range is the SH 1120, with a 110 litre hopper. In this case, air from the drill’s main fan is used to direct product into the venturi to enable it to be applied with seed from the main tank. The larger SH 1540, SH 2560 and SH 4080 models, with 150, 250 and 400 litre hopper capacities respectively, are equipped with their own electrically driven fans and apply product via splash plates behind the main seeding lines. All models use KUHN’s

Helica volumetric seed metering system, as used successfully on their range of mechanical drills, to maximise the accuracy of output. Application rates are controlled through the ISOBUS system in relation to the forward speed of the tractor. “The SH seeders are an effective way of adding great versatility to KUHN pneumatic drills,” says KUHN UK Product Specialist Ed Worts. “With the main drill sowing seed in the usual way, the SH seeder can be used to sow a secondary seed, such as a companion crop used to suppress weeds, add soil fertility or act as a pest deterrent, for example.

herbicide such as Avadex, such is its versatility and adaptability. “In the case of the Espro RC and Aurock RC, which have split hoppers as standard, the SH seeder adds a third application possibility. This allows a variety of applications to suit individual requirements and reduces the need for expensive seed mixtures.” On the larger SH 1540, SH 2560 and SH 4080 models, application rates between 2.2kg/ha and 130kg/ha can be accurately achieved alongside the application from the main drill.

John Deere: 6M Series tractors go stepless

Kuhn has introduced a range of supplementary seeders that can be fitted to its Venta, Espro and Aurock pneumatic drills

F

ollowing their successful introduction at Agritechnica 2019, John Deere’s 6M Series tractors have been delivered to customers since January 2020. With this brand new tractor series, John Deere raised the bar in this tractor segment by delivering excellent visibility, manoeuvrability and unique payload capacity combined with more operator comfort, while reaching new performance levels. In the company’s ongoing effort to serve customers with affordable solutions, John Deere has continued to develop the 6M Series and is now launching several major updates. The four-cylinder models are now available with the proven AutoPowr transmission plus a brand new and unique guidance solution, AutoTrac on Corner Post Display, as well as a number of other new options. Thanks to the sloping bonnet design combined with the corner post display, the four short-frame 6M models offer unobstructed visibility to the front. By adopting the popular 6430 Premium tractor wheelbase of 2400mm, they also deliver excellent manoeuvrability, with a tight turning radius of 4.35m. Despite their compact size, the maximum permissible 6 | AgriNews

gross weight of 10.45 tonnes on these models leads to an unmatched vehicle payload of up to 4.7 tonnes. In addition to the 6M range’s existing gearbox options, the availability of AutoPowr now offers customers the largest choice of transmissions in this tractor segment. Together with the full Auto mode and its automatic engine/transmission management, AutoClutch enables the operator to stop the tractor by simply using the brake pedal, which makes a huge difference when carrying out a lot of shuttle work for example. Furthermore, the aggressiveness of AutoPowr’s forward/reverse operation can be adjusted via the corner post display. Customers looking for a more affordable solution can choose AutoPowr on the right-hand console with either mechanical or electrohydraulic SCVs. For more comfort, the Premium Edition option features AutoPowr on the compact CommandArm.

Corner Post Display, there is no longer any need for an extra cab display. All the new system needs to operate AutoTrac is a StarFire satellite receiver and it’s ready to go. Customers can save up to 30 per cent of the cost of a separate display, but maintain full flexibility of choice as an upgrade is possible at any time. Building on John Deere’s full-frame concept, the 6M Series models are also ideal front loader tractors and are perfectly matched to the new M Series models announced in May. Complementing the R Series range, M Series loaders are specifically designed for customers who need a versatile, lighter loader at an attractive price without compromising lift height. The loaders’ slim design complements the tractors’ manoeuvrability and is fully compatible with John Deere front hitches, allowing full front axle oscillation and maximum steering angles while still leaving room to access the tractor’s service points.

Alongside the well-established AutoTrac system, John Deere is now introducing a new entry level guidance Smithfield solution on Tractors all 6M Series Llanelwedd, Builth Wells models. With Powys, LD2 3SR t: 01982 553221 the unique www.smithfieldtractors.co.uk AutoTrac on

John Deere: 7R Series leaps ahead

Just 8 months after launching its new generation 7R Series tractors at Agritechnica 2019, John Deere has announced another update

J

ust eight months after launching its new generation 7R Series tractors at Agritechnica 2019, John Deere has announced another significant update to the range. The new flagship 7R 350 model offers an ideal power to weight ratio to deliver unmatched acceleration and transport efficiency. The 7R Series models introduced in Hanover last November received a major upgrade with a brand new luxury cab, the CommandPRO joystick, a top-quality seat with massage function, DAB+ touchscreen radio with Apple CarPlay

compatibility and a 6.1 speaker system, enhanced Precision Ag technology features and much more. Featuring the stepless AutoPowr transmission as standard, the new top of the range 7R 350 tractor completes the 7R Series and can be ordered now from John Deere’s European dealer network. Developing up to 388hp with Intelligent Power Management and with a minimum shipping weight of only 11.4 tonnes, this latest model boasts an impressive power to weight ratio of just 29kg/hp. At the same time, on all 7R

Series tractors equipped with a 40kph transmission and front axle brakes, payload has been increased by two tonnes to match the maximum permissible weight of 18 tonnes. More flotation is also offered with the new availability of IF650/60R34 front tyres and up to IF900/60R42 rear tyres. First-class steering capability is provided by the enhanced ActiveCommand Steering 2. This is an electronic system that uses a gyroscope to sense any tractor yaw and automatically compensates drift to stay perfectly on track.

New: Milk formula for stressed calves

Farmers struggling to manage persistent digestive disturbances amongst their calves now to access to break-through formula

F

armers struggling to manage persistent digestive disturbances amongst their calves now have access to a breakthrough new 100% dairy protein milk formula from Volac. New Imunogard® has been formulated specifically for under-performing stressed calves or to meet the unique needs of calf units wrestling with a stubborn scour problem that can’t be overcome by an improvement in environmental hygiene. Volac global technical manager Ian Watson explains that the new 23% crude protein calf milk formula is vegetable proteinfree, which means it is more easily digested by calves under stress. “The protein in Imunogard® is 100% dairy. By formulating to 100% dairy protein we can maximise the level of Imunopro® in this new product. This also increases the delivery of the functional whey proteins (contained within Imunopro®) to the calf, which gives it the best chance of fighting off a disease challenge,” he says. 8 | AgriNews

He adds that the new product also contains a slightly higher fat content to allow for more energy to be metabolised for growth. Additionally, Imunogard® incorporates the established hydrolysed yeast culture Celmanax from Church & Dwight to help improve calf gut function and mitigate the effect of a number of harmful pathogens. “Proven hydrolysed yeast cultures not only provide readily digestible refined functional carbohydrates for the calf; they also have a recognised prebiotic function. Put simply, the inclusion of Celmanax feeds the calf’s beneficial gut bacteria and helps bind them to damaging bugs, such as cryptosporidia, E.coli and Salmonella spp. This stops these harmful pathogens from binding to the gut wall and taking hold to cause disease signs such as scouring,” explains Mr Watson. “For example, independent scientific trials have demonstrated that calves supplemented with Celmanax shed three times less cryptosporidium

oocysts than those which were not, thus helping to reduce the spread of cryptosporidiosis. The Celmanax supplemented calves also had improved faecal and dehydration scores1.” Imunogard® also benefits from the inclusion of other beneficial health supplements, as standard in Volac’s Lifeguard range of calf milk formulas. For example, butyrate for its anti-inflammatory effects and ability to stimulate gut enzyme production, and the garlic-derived ingredient Gardion – known too for its natural pathogen inhibiting effects and ability to enhance immune system function. The new calf milk formula should be mixed at the rate of 150g in every litre of water and be fed to calves according to Volac’s standard growth curve recommendations. Calf rearers, vets and nutritionists interested in further information about new Imunogard® should speak to their local Volac Business Manager, or call Volac directly on freephone 0800 919808.

Amazone has extended UF02 mounted sprayer range with two models

The new UF 1002 and UF 1302 mounted sprayers. Amazone has extended its UF02 mounted sprayer range.

A

mazone has extended its UF 02 mounted sprayer range with two new models. The UF 1002 has a nominal volume of 1,000 litres and an actual volume of 1,100 litres, whereas the UF 1302 has a nominal volume of 1,300 litres and an actual volume of 1,400 litres. Both models can be used with the laterally-folding Q-Plus booms in working widths from 12 to 15 metres or the verticallyfolding Super-S1 or S2 booms from 15 to 30 metres. The completed UF 02 range therefore now covers tank sizes from 1,000 to 2,000 litres. The established UF 901 and UF 1201 mounted sprayer models, which are positioned in the mid-price sector, will remain in the product line-up. The new UF 1002 and 1302 are each equipped with a specially formed polyethylene tank that have a favourable centre of gravity. The extremely compact tank means that the distance between the lower link coupling points and the boom can be kept to a minimum. The quick coupling system provides comfortable and safe mounting and demounting in spite of this close spacing. supports to automatically slide into the working position under the tank. The spray liquid circuit is managed via the SmartCenter operator station. This is located behind a large swing door on the left-hand side of the machine to protect it from dirt and any water splashes. Together with all the comfortably-arranged controls, the highperformance,60 litre induction bowl is also located here. The conical design and high draw-out capacity provide high-speed, trouble-free and complete emptying. Granules such as Epsom salts can also be inducted without any problems thanks to the mixing nozzle and high-performance rinse ring located under the lip of the bowl. Clean water is always available at the induction bowl during both suction and pressure filling.

The agitation automatically regulates itself depending on the tank level during the application with the intensity of agitation automatically reducing as the fill level drops, until it is switched off completely, in order to prevent foaming. Also included in this pack is the auto-dynamic agitation control. Here, the agitator output is automatically reduced temporarily if a high application rate is required at the boom. The agitator operates at full capacity again as soon as all the nozzles have been switched off on the headland. After use, the Comfort-Pack facilitates full automatic cleaning, which can be carried out remotely from the tractor cab. In addition to this, the UF 02 can be supplied from the factory with continuous internal cleaning.

Furthermore, it is possible to fill the fresh water tank when suction filling via the in-house developed, 7-way pressure tap. Community says thanks as food aid project signs off on a high

Organisations across Staffordshire today said a big thank you to JCB as the company served up its last meal under “food for our communities” initiative

A

n idea of Carole Bamford, wife of JCB Chairman Lord Bamford, the scheme swung into action in March at the height of the Coronavirus pandemic to support those most in need. Since then, more than 35,000 meals and over 8,000 sandwiches have been delivered to the vulnerable in Stoke-on-Trent, Uttoxeter, Rocester and Biddulph. Dishes made at JCB’s World HQ in Rocester included cottage pies, macaroni cheese and Bolognese. The NSPCC - JCB’s nominated charity - is one organisation which has distributed the meals in Stokeon-Trent, delivering almost 4,000 to families in the Chell, Chell Heath and Fegg Hayes areas. Jennie Hammond, NSPCC Together for Childhood Development and Impact Manager, said: “We would like to thank JCB for such a generous donation at a time when some families might have struggled. The meals have been really appreciated by each family which has received them and the scheme has had a very positive impact on the community.” More than 15,000 JCB meals were also distributed across Stoke-on-Trent by 16 | AgriNews

the Burslem-based Hubb Foundation to children and families in need. Founder Carol Shanahan said: “The impact of JCB’s ‘Food for our Communities’ project has been immense. It has supported families in Stokeon-Trent when their need was at its greatest and help like this will never be forgotten.” More than 8,000 sandwiches were made for distribution to the homeless in Stoke-onTrent and for inclusion in food parcels for vulnerable people in the Uttoxeter and Biddulph areas. JCB also supplied St. Michael’s Church Support Group in Rocester with 100 meals a week for villagers who were in need. Over the course of the initiative the JCB team used around seven tonnes of potatoes, more than 3.5 tonnes of minced beef and almost two tonnes of both pasta and onions In India – where JCB has factories in Delhi, Pune and Jaipur – the scale of the initiative to support local communities was even greater and more than 175,000 meals were served up during the project. As well as providing thousands of meals, JCB has also donated vital PPE to front line workers. JCB and its employees also volunteered to produce visors for the NHS. Inspired

by these efforts, JCBsponsored athletes, slalom canoeist Adam Burgess and triple jumper Ben Williams, took on a marathon weight lifting challenge and have so far raised more than £2,400 for the Royal Stoke University Hospital. JCB’s kitchens in Staffordshire were supported with the provision of food from organic farms at Daylesford in Gloucestershire. Daylesford - founded by Carole Bamford - has supplied organic beef mince to the project, with staff working seven days a week to support the food aid initiative.

Organic Lawn Care: How to improve lawn without chemicals How to improve your lawn without chemicals: 5 steps to natural lawn care for homeowners What is Organic Lawn Care? The goal of organic or natural lawn care is to create a healthy and sustainable environment for your grass, plants and family to grow without the use of conventional herbicides, fertilizers and pesticides. What are the dangers of lawn care pesticides and fertilizers? Pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, fertilizers and many other store-bought lawncare products can do wonders for the look of your lawn, but their warning labels will show there is some risk associated with their use. Pesticides can affect more living organisms than they target, herbicides can harm helpful insects like bees, and water-soluble nitrogen fertilizers can runoff into the waters we drink and recreate in.But you can have a beautiful lawn, while still protecting the environment. 5 Steps for Organic Lawn Care There are five factors to consider when starting your organic lawn care program.

Unit 1 Happy Valley Trad. Est. Primrose Hill, Kings Langley Herts, WD4 8HX | t: 01923 260699 www.taylorstools.co.uk

Everything from the roots, to the grass type, to water techniques and more, can all be done naturally, to create a healthy lawn. Continue reading to learn about natural and sustainable ways that you can care for your lawn. Step 1: Strengthen your grass roots Like all plants, the health of your lawn starts at its roots, which is why it's extremely important to nourish and care for the soil they are in. The easiest way to tell the health of your roots is by looking at the soil and its pH level, or its measure of acidity or alkalinity. Different plants prefer soils with varying pH levels, which is why it's important to learn where your grass stands. For example, dandelions prefer a pH level of 7.5, which is mostly neutral. Most grass thrives with a soil pH of 6.5 to 7.0, which is in the slightly acidic to neutral range. Conducting a soil test for your pH level can be done on your own with a testing kit from a gardening store. Test your soil by taking three to five soil samples from about four to six inches below the soil surface in different

areas of your lawn. Remove the grass so you're left with nothing but soil. Mix the dirt together and spread around on a disposable surface so it can dry out over a 24-hour period and test according to the instructions of your kit. Improve your Soil Quality If the soil is too acidic (pH 0 – 6), add organic options like wood ash to your soil. It may take several applications over a few years to take effect, but it will put your roots on a track to becoming healthier. If the soil is too basic (pH 8 – 14), add sphagnum peat to your lawn. Just be aware that it may require some tilling to fully incorporate the sphagnum peat into the soil and for it to take effect. Another option is to add fine mulch and compost to your lawn. Step 2: Growing Healthy Grass with Organic Lawn Fertilizers The best natural fertilizer for your grass is the mulch, or grass itself. The grass clippings you make each time you mow contain rich nutrients like nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. When grass is mulched into tiny clippings, microorganisms living on the soil bed break down the mulch and release those nutrients back into the soil. AgriNews | 21

NSTS: National Sprayer Testing Scheme

Ian Forman: Restrictions are now easing after non-compliance during lockdown. Most NSTS test centres have now started retesting

T

he last 3 months have been challenging for everyone and of course this has included sprayer testing during this period. Fortunately for farmers the relaxation of Red Tractor and Scottish Quality Crops (SQC) requirements where non-compliances have been applied has been a great help. The easing has meant that if a non-compliance was issued during lockdown, because equipment testing, along with other services, rely on third party services the 28-day period was extended until such time that normal services can be resumed. For Red Tractor members it is a

little unclear how long this extension will be granted for but for members of SQC there is no requirement for NSTS testing until the end of the year, but any outstanding testing has to be done by 1st March 2021. We have advised everyone to make use of the operator check sheet, available on the NSTS website, www.nsts.org. uk , which has recently been updated and now includes space to record your nozzle output and forward speed checks, for quality assurance purposes as proof of calibration. At the time of writing this article we are moving forward as regards restrictions imposed by

coronavirus. Many Test Centres have started testing again, and many farmers are happy for outside staff to come onto their premises. This means that testing has gradually resumed again, but don’t forget that Red Tractor have not issued a statement requiring tests to be carried out yet so if you have had a 28-day non-compliance issued but would rather wait until you feel safe then hold off for now. If you would like further information about any of the testing that NSTS provide, including fertiliser spreader testing, please get in touch. Ian Forman, NSTS Manager 07920 658972

Have you considered having your fertiliser spreader tested? See below the benefits of what you will gain from the test. • Thorough inspection of the machine • Tray test to confirm evenness of spread across the working width • Adjustments made to achieve the best CV for the products to be applied • Electronic report sent showing full details of the test and results for each product NSTS have a national network of test centres to provide testing of all types of equipment. Fermented wholecrop could be lifeline if facing tight grass silage stocks Harvesting an area of cereal crop for fermented wholecrop silage could provide a lifeline for keeping cattle fed this winter

H

arvesting an area of cereal crop for fermented wholecrop silage could provide a lifeline for keeping cattle fed this winter in areas where spring drought has left grass silage clamps depleted, says Volac livestock specialist, Ken Stroud. Although there are still opportunities to boost flagging clamps with further grass silage cuts, grass has typically done the majority of its growing by the time we get through June, says Mr Stroud. Assessing grass silage stocks in mid-summer therefore fits perfectly with deciding whether to harvest some cereals for wholecrop, he adds. “As well as maximising the yield and quality from remaining grass cuts, making some wholecrop could be an excellent top-up for livestock farmers facing grass shortfalls this season,” says Mr Stroud. “Wholecrop winter wheat can yield 12-15 tonnes of dry matter (DM) per hectare – which is more

than three cuts of grass in a dry season. Spring barley is another option for wholecrop. Although it is likely to be lower-yielding, a lot of it has been planted this year. If you aren’t growing cereals, maybe look into buying a standing crop.” As with any silage, achieving maximum feed value from wholecrop demands effective preservation, says Mr Stroud. Many farmers preserve it by fermentation, he says, because this is a low cost and straightforward method.

will increase yield and starch content but reduce digestibility, and once cereal DM reaches 45% it can increase rapidly during hot weather by 2% a day.” For the best preservation, Mr Stroud says as well as taking steps to aid the fermentation, it is vital to remember that, as a fairly dry and fibrous forage, wholecrop is highly prone to losses from heating. This is caused by yeast and mould growth, which is triggered by the presence of air.

“Although fermented wholecrop can be made at crop dry matters ranging from 30-60%, cutting at 45-50% DM gives a good balance between providing moisture and sugars for fermentation and a good starch content in the cereal grain,” says Mr Stroud. “Starch content can be as high as 35%.

Good consolidation to remove air from clamps is therefore imperative, he says. Rather than filling clamps in six inch layers before rolling, as typically recommended for grass silage, he advises just four inch layers to aid consolidation. The additive used also needs to inhibit yeast and mould growth as well as targeting improved fermentation, he stresses.

“Typically, this 45-50% DM level occurs as grain moves from the soft to hard ‘cheese’ stage but with no ‘milk’ detectable. Be careful not to overshoot this. Harvesting at higher dry matters

“Ecocool, for example, contains two strains of beneficial bacteria designed to tackle both of these issues. Treating isn’t expensive compared with a clamp of good silage,” he adds.

Grasshopper: “A very reliable, well-built machine Ian Wells reviews the Grasshopper 321D after purchasing one on behalf of St. Neots Town Council

A

fter taking grass cutting in-house, in 2007, St Neots Town Council needed a manoeuvrable, rugged machine to cut grass in its cemeteries, church yards and on its village greens. The Grasshopper Zero turn was the answer. SNTC purchased a Grasshopper 321D, with a 52-inch mulching deck and found it to be a wonderful ride-on that was quick and fit in to the smallest of gaps; most importantly, the mulch kit gave a great finish. We purchased a second 321D in 2014 and a 325D, with a 52-inch DX deck, in 2016; the 325D was 26 | AgriNews

purchased primarily for verge cutting work. Thanks to the manoeuvrability of the Grasshopper, using these two machines on the verges, has easily halved the time it takes to complete the round, by comparison using our out-front deck machines. The 325D is a good all-round machine, fine grass cuts really well and longer areas are no match for its cutting capabilities; the fourth blade throws the arisings out the rear, meaning the deck never clogs up and still leaves a great finish. Maintenance-wise, the Grasshopper only has five

grease points, all of which are very easy to locate; this means daily checks and maintenance are a breeze. The Grasshopper brand produces a very reliable machine, well-built, with all metal panels and well laidout controls. However, should you be unlucky enough to have a problem, I can highly recommend AJ&R Scambler and Sons Ltd of Bourne, they are our go-to experts for spares and repairs. Poultry: Red Tractor carries out 6,300 remote assessments

Over the past two months, the UK’s llargest food and farming scheme has seen 6,300 members complete remove assessments on farm

O

ver the past two months, the UK’s largest food and farming scheme has seen 6,300 members complete remote assessments on farm. In March, all physical assessments were halted in accordance with government advice on social distancing and non-essential travel. Working with the scheme’s certification bodies and key stakeholders, a new protocol was developed to meet all UKAS requirements, and to ensure that the supply chain remained secure and fully traceable. The Red Tractor regime for remote assessments gives assessors the ability to have ‘virtual eyes’ on farm and allows farmers to complete their assessments to gain or maintain their assurance status. Members have been offered the opportunity to opt for either an offline pre-assessment of documentation, followed by a partial assessment using live-streaming technologies to provide a real-time visual inspection of the farm. Or, alternatively have the entire assessment-reviewing paperwork and documents, alongside a visual inspection streamed live with an assessor.

30 | AgriNews

Red Tractor’s chief executive Jim Moseley said: “With more than 6,000 remote assessments already completed since we began the roll out, and thousands more in the pipeline, we are delighted how quickly and well this new protocol has been received by members. “Working with our certification bodies, we’ve continued to test the platforms and systems, and respond to user feedback, to deliver a robust regime for farmers. In doing so we have ensured that we continue to have a secure supply chain, which has every member, meeting every standard, every day. “Increasingly our farmers are recognising the benefits of remote assessments. Not only as a viable solution for now, but as a real asset for the future- helping to overcome some of the geographic and biosecurity challenges they often face.”

“I was apprehensive about it because I’m not very comfortable with technology and I hadn’t used any video conferencing apps before. But the interaction with the assessor was very good and they clearly explained what I needed to do. “The thing that took the most time for me was getting all the documents together. I wasn’t confident about using the technology, so I chose to show the assessor our documentation during the video call, rather than uploading it to the portal beforehand. Now that I feel more confident, I think I’ll be able to use the portal next time. This will make life easier.”

Remote assessments have been made possible, largely due to the development of a unique online portal, which works as a confidential online filing cabinet. Members can Andrew Hurford, who farms upload and store all necessary alongside this brother and documents required to parents in Devon said: “I demonstrate compliance was sceptical about the new to Red Tractor standards. format, but it actually worked It’s a secure and safe way out well. for members to upload and review documents relating “We were due to have our to their assessment and has audit a week before lockdown, been designed for all Red but this couldn’t go ahead so Tractor farm scheme and we were top of the list for the transport members to use. new online version.

Waitrose egg supplier anticipates post-lockdown growth in production

Lockdown led to unprecedented demand for shell egg. Now one packer thinks it will lead to an increase in UK production

S

tonegate Eggs supplies all of Waitrose’s own label shell egg. Like all other egg packers, it saw unprecedented demand when the lockdown was imposed in March. Mike Tyers is producer development manager at Stonegate Farmers, and took part in a discussion via Zoom organised by LEAF, the farming and environmental organisation. Demand rose sharply in late March for British shell egg. Tyers said demand was akin to Christmas. “It was frantic.” As foodservice outlets were closed, consumers turned to eating and cooking at home including more home baking, it was impossible to meet demand and there were gaps on all supermarket shelves. The UK consumes around 35 million eggs a day, 60% of which is usually purchased through the retail sector in shell. The remaining 40% is split in half, with 20% eaten in foodservice outlets, and 20% used in the processing industry. Simply switching the egg that would have gone to restaurants, pubs and food manufacturers into the retail chain was difficult, as much of the egg used in foodservice and processing is imported,

and UK retailers have all committed to selling British Lion egg to a specification and fully traceable. “The industry was seeing increasing demand before the Corona crisis but with lockdown wee saw a massive and sudden increase in demand, maybe a bit of panic buying to start with but because we had to replace the service sector with eggs from UK it put a greart strain on availability. There was an increase in home consumption as well as eggs replaced meals out. We were running below hand to mouth. Even now, it has calmed down a little bit now, but every week we were running behind demand.” Some retailers have broken rank and decided to import egg from Europe and others were considering it. Tyers says demand for egg is now starting to ease as people are returning to work and home baking is dropping off the agenda for many families. “It is coming a bit more into balance, but we are still in total up on our demand for egg than we were before going into crisis.” No retailer has been able avoid gaps on shelves, including Waitrose, whose eggs are supplied exclusively

by Stonegate. “Obviously as packers we have obligations to our most valued customers, Stonegate’s are Waitrose. We want to maintain loyalty with Waitrose and we will do everything we can to maintain that loyalty by servicing them with the volumes, variety and frequency they expect. We maintained 80% of their requirement while some retailers struggled to maintain 50% from their suppliers, but even we could not supply them with 100% of what they wanted. Waitrose use a unique breed of hen for the production of their eggs [the British Blacktail, developed by Stonegate and Waitrose] and that exclusivity limits our ability to supply eggs in general.” Increasing the volume of shell eggs available takes at least four months,to grow a pullet to “point of lay” Tyers pointed out on the call, and the UK flock was already smaller than usual at the start of the year due to two factors: Non notiofiable low pathogenic avian influenza had taken several flocks out of circulation and general disillusionment in the industry over preceding years with low farm prices had discouraged new investment and even discouraged some producers to restock buildings .

Increase in rat and mouse activity seen during pandemic Research suggests that resistance is spreading as a result of the use of rodenticide actives bromadiolone and difenacoum

R

esearch suggests that resistance is spreading as a result of the use of rodenticide actives bromadiolone and difenacoum. This is especially prevalent in the south of England The number of rats and mice has risen sharply during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the British Pest Control Association (BPCA). A COVID-19 impact study carried out by the BPCA has revealed 51% of pest controllers have reported a rise in rat activity and 41% have reported a rise in mouse activity. Rats can breed unexpectedly quickly with one breeding pair multiplying to over 1,250 in just one year. Rats and mice represent a significant threat to poultry farms and their control is becoming more difficult as numbers rise, and resistant rodents spread. Unfortunately, resistance to some anticoagulant rodenticide baits is a growing issue throughout the UK. Research published by the University of Reading Vertebrate Pests Unit (VPU) suggests that resistance is spreading as a result of two rodenticide actives, bromadiolone and difenacoum. 32 | AgriNews

These are the active ingredients in a number of common and widely available rodenticide baits. However, a growing number of rodents are showing signs of resistance to these two actives. Cases are more prevalent in the south of England and a map showing the instances and concentrations of resistant rodent is available on the University of Reading website. There are three anticoagulant rodenticide actives that rodents have not developed resistance to. These are flocoumafen, brodifacoum and difethialone. “Farmers can help to reduce the further spread of resistance by using products that contain one of these actives. By continuing to use bromadiolone and difenacoum in areas with resistance, farmers may unknowingly be increasing the population size of resistant rodents”, explains Helen Ainsworth, pest control specialist, at BASF. Triple risk Rats and mice spread disease and thrive in poultry units where food, water and shelter are plentiful. Rodents are a risk to bird health, housing and equipment. This is because they eat and spoil food with faeces and urine, cause damage by gnawing, and spread diseases such as salmonellosis, pasteurella

and leptospirosis. “Controlling rodents is not simply a case of putting some bait down. There are many factors that should be considered before rodenticides are used. If choosing to use rodenticides, farmers should always select a product that reduces the risk to non-target species and that rodents have no known resistance to,” says Ainsworth. Rodenticide baits are perceived as the go-to solution for rat and mouse infestations. However, growing concern of the risk to non-target species and a desire to reduce the residues in the environment has led to changes in pack sizes to the general public and some farmers. “New 25 parts per million (ppm) rodenticides such as Storm Ultra Secure can be bought by any farmer and can be pulse baited to reduce the amount of rodenticide needed to establish control. Farmers should always follow the directions on the label and only use rodenticides when all other measures have been taken to reduce rodent activity,” advises Ainsworth. Rodenticides should be a last resort because there are effective non-chemical measures that can be taken first. “A simple site walk on a regular basis can identify common causes of rodents gaining access to poultry

Increase in rat and mouse activity seen during pandemic sheds. Farmers should remove rubbish and weeds, check for gaps under doors or holes in brickwork and roofs that may allow rodents to enter.” Understanding the extent of the problem on a farm is the first step to carrying out a suitable treatment method. “Looking for existing signs of rodents and marking areas on a site plan is a good way to understand the magnitude of an infestation and plan for it accordingly. Exposing areas by cutting back vegetation and removing any easily available food and water sources can help to reduce the risk of rodent numbers growing quickly,” says Ainsworth. Extensive research has helped to create the Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU) UK Code of Best Practice for rodent control and the safe use of rodenticides. The code advises that rodenticides, such as anticoagulants, should only be used for as long as is necessary to achieve satisfactory levels of rodent control, with a maximum of 35 days without reevaluation. “Pulse baiting with a highly palatable, single feed anticoagulant bait such as Storm Ultra Secure will reduce the amount of bait placed per bait point compared to multi feed treatments. Using the pulse baiting technique, it is possible to gain control of even a significant infestation in 14 days which will help to

reduce the risk to non-target species posed by bait being used for longer periods”, says Ainsworth. A site plan and checklist that records the frequency and quantity of bait should be kept for audit and legal purposes. Sufficient bait stations should be placed to ensure baits are thoroughly distributed in accordance with the label directions for use. “Bait stations should be checked regularly, and unused bait should be collected at the end of a treatment to minimise the risk to birds and other non-target species. It is also important to remove and dispose of dead rodents as rodenticide residues can also cause harm to non-target species,” she adds. Steps to effective rodent control Walk the site to remove rubbish and look for signs of rodent activity. Proof buildings by filling in gaps in brickwork and roofs or holes under doors. Remove spilt or available food and water sources. Create a site plan that details burrows and high rodent activity areas. Using the label for guidance, place bait stations in areas where activity has been recorded and mark the

location of the bait stations on the site plan. Use bait in accordance with the label directions and monitor bait take at the intervals instructed on the label. Continue to monitor the site and keep it tidy to reduce areas that rodents can use for harbourage. Do not use rodenticides for more than 35 days without reevaluating the site If rodent activity continues after the bait treatment, contact a registered pest controller Pulse Baiting Pulse baiting can only be used with single feed anticoagulants and should always be carried out using the directions on the label. Walk the site to remove rubbish and look for signs of rodents. Proof buildings by filling in gaps in brickwork and roofs or holes under doors. Remove spilt or available food and water sources. Create a site plan that details burrows and high rodent activity areas. Using the label for guidance, place bait stations in areas AgriNews | 33

Why Red Tractor is launching an ‘enhanced welfare’ chicken standard

The Red Tractor scheme is launching a new Enhanced Welfare standard for chicken.

T

he chicken grown under this standard will be labelled with a purple label in shops to differentiate it from chicken grown under the standard requirements. The Enhanced Welfare standard meets the requirements laid out in the Better Chicken Commitment, which has been adopted by foodservice chains including KFC, and retailers such as M&S and Waitrose and requires slower growing breeds to be used, lower stocking densities, plus environmental enrichment and additional light. Red Tractor said increasingly consumers are demanding a greater choice and for the scheme to clearly differentiate how some of the product carrying its label is produced. Extensive UK and international research conducted by Red Tractor has helped develop the labelling system for the additional standards modules, chief exectuive Jim Moseley says. The new marques retain the union flag, the distinctive tractor with the heart in the wheel sitting on a ‘tick’, but replaces the words Certified Standards from the core logo, with the farming method used. Each new marque will 34 | AgriNews

have its own colour: Free range for chicken: Orange Enhanced welfare for chicken: Purple Organic: Green “Over the past 18 months we have been focused on how we can provide greater choice and clarity for those shoppers and diners who are looking to buy British produce grown and reared to recognised production methods,” says Moseley.

The Enhanced welfare module meets all the requirements of the 2026 Better Chicken Commitment/ European Chicken Commitment. Q&A with Jim Moseley The Red Tractor chief executive spoke to Poultry Business to explain the thinking behind the new standard Q: Why is this needed?

A: When Red Tractor was first established it was a set of core standards that assured The new ranges will begin to food was safe and responsibly roll out across foodservice produced and affordable for and retail over the next 12 all. So, it was one mainstream months. As with the core position. But we completely offering, accredited members recognise that there are will be required to meet robust some obvious examples specifications for the new where consumers are asking ranges, which will be checked for [different things such as] by independent assessors organic or a focus on animal every step of the food’s welfare, etc. And so the journey from farm to pack. feeling is why couldn’t Red Tractor fulfil total consumer In addition to the worlddemand by developing those leading requirements already marques as well? in the core Red Tractor standards, the module In doing that we also saw includes a slower growing two other opportunities. One chicken breed and more was, could we improve the space and natural light in clarity of labelling to enable barns to encourage natural consumers to make a more behaviours like pecking, informed choice? And the scratching, wing flapping other was, could we reduce and use of perches. Stocking the audit burden on farmers density is reduced from 38kg/ and growers if we were doing m² to 30kg/m². all of those marques?

Isuzu: D-Max teams up with tractor Ted

The Isuzu D-Max has built up an enviable reputation among farmers across the country

T

he Isuzu D-Max has built up an enviable reputation among farmers across the country and this 100% workhorse pick-up truck has now teamed up with Tractor Ted, the popular children’s character that provides videos and fun activities for the nextgeneration of aspiring farmers. Universally loved by children and parents alike, Tractor Ted helps educate children on modern farming practices through a series of charming films shared via YouTube, to over 40,000 channel subscribers. Fitting naturally into the agricultural setting, the rugged Isuzu D-Max is put through its paces on many of Tractor Ted’s adventures around the farm alongside Midge the dog and Merlin the pony.

Away from the cameras, the Isuzu D-Max Utah also mucks in with Farmer Tom, real name Tom Wheeler and a central character in Tractor Ted, for the day-to-day running of the 200ha organic Highchurch Farm in Somerset where its one-tonne payload and 3.5 tonne towing capacity are put to good use ferrying around machinery and produce. Forming part of the ‘AllPurpose’ range, the Isuzu D-Max Utah that Farmer Tom drives appeals to those who want to get the most out of their vehicle. In addition to its loading and towing capabilities, the Utah is equipped with plenty of convenient features like Automatic Air Conditioning, Keyless Entry and Push Button Start System

and 7” Multifunction Colour Touchscreen with a DAB Radio, Bluetooth and Satellite Navigation. Farmer Tom commented: “The D-Max is a tough, hard-working workhorse yet with the comfort of a family car. I can carry dogs, sheep or fencing stakes in the back and still carry the kids in the main cab! I already drove an Isuzu before replacing it with the Utah having been introduced to it by hill sheep farming friends who recommended its robust nature. I haven’t looked back. The 3.5 tonne towing capacity is also really handy around the farm and I love that I can flick from 2-wheel to 4-wheel drive at the switch of a button. I really can’t fault it in any way”. William Brown, Isuzu UK Managing Director, added: “We’re delighted that Farmer Tom uses an Isuzu D-Max to help him with his daily work on the farm. This capable, practical and reliable truck is perfect for hardworking environments and we’re very pleased that the D-Max can participate in these informative and educational episodes of Tractor Ted.” Tractor Ted also now features on the ‘Kidz Zone’ activity section of the Isuzu website. There are colouring-in sheets, spot the difference, maze puzzles and treasure hunts which all show the Isuzu D-Max and Tractor Ted working together in farming environments.
