Kverneland power harrow drill combinations to get three-year warranty Following the successful roll-out of a three-year warranty on Kverneland power harrows.

F

ollowing the successful roll-out of a threeyear warranty on Kverneland power harrows, that same guarantee now extends to Kverneland power harrow drill combinations. And choices have further increased with the arrival of a new grain and fertiliser model, called the e-drill Maxi Plus.

ase IH awarded for its newly launched LB436HD baler and for its new mixed-fleets connectivity partnership DataConnect / LB436 HD has new and upgraded features including pick-up, driveline, density system and knotter technology / DataConnect enables global mixed-fleet customers to view their machine data in the platform of their choice.

The new LB436 HD baler has been awarded “Machine of the Year 2020” in the category “Hay and Forage”, and DataConnect connectivity solutions in the “Electronics” category during a ceremony held at Agritechnica in Hannover, Germany. The jury, composed of a panel of European agricultural magazine editors, recognized the several benefits of this new baler range, brought by its innovative new features, enabling farmers and contractors to pack more material into every bale, while reducing handling requirements and transport costs. The new connectivity partnership “DataConnect” enables mixed-fleet customers to manage farm, fleet and data more easily.

producing bales with up to 22% greater density than the LB434 XL model, which produces the same 120 x 90cm bale size and remains in the range.

In addition, an innovative new twine knotter system, named TwinePro, is designed to boost productivity while eliminating field litter and bale contamination. Landini tractors will be exhibited at the Midlands Machinery Show for the first time following the appointment of Clover Farm Services as a main dealer for the Italian marque.

But in recent years, the range has expanded to include more powerful, more sophisticated and fully-equipped tractors catering for larger grassland farms and arable units.

Clover Farm Services is also running a couple of smaller models as demonstrators and in addition to the 7-230 Robo-Six will have 43hp to 126hp Landini tractors on their Midlands Machinery Show stand at Newark on November 20/21.

Dwayn Clover, who heads the machinery sales and service business based at Swineshead south of Boston, will use the event to launch the new Landini venture, along with new franchises for Faresin telescopic handlers and Alpego tillage equipment.

“We’re a regular exhibitor at the Midlands Machinery Show, it’s an event that works for us,” says Mr Clover. “But this is a very special year as we launch our new association with Landini and the new equipment franchises.”

John Deere & Volocopter: Heavy-life utility for agriculture

John Deere and Volocopter have announced their cooperation on cargo drone technology and presented the first large drone

J

ohn Deere and Volocopter have announced their cooperation on cargo drone technology and presented the first large drone adapted for agricultural use at Agritechnica 2019.

A demonstrator model of the VoloDrone equipped with a John Deere crop sprayer, which is ready for its first field flight, was displayed in the Future Technology Zone. Featuring a potential payload of 200kg, the VoloDrone is able to cover an enormous area, especially under difficult operating conditions.

This first large agricultural drone is the result of a collaboration between John Deere, who bring knowledge of farmers’ needs, and the Urban Air Mobility pioneer Volocopter, whose flying taxis form the technological basis of the VoloDrone.

Large drones are becoming increasingly important, not just in the field of logistics but also in passenger transport. At the same time, small drones

are already being used in agriculture for stock control and mapping, for example.

Both companies see great potential for the VoloDrone’s use in agriculture, with capabilities ranging from

difficult topography to increased efficiency in the use of crop protection agents, sowing seeds or frost control. The development of this demonstrator is a first step towards bringing this innovative technology closer to commercial application after full testing in the field.

One battery charge allows a flight time of up to 30 minutes, and the VoloDrone can be operated remotely or automatically on a preprogrammed route.

The drone frame is equipped with a flexible standardised payload attachment system.

This means that different devices can be mounted on the frame depending on the application. For crop protection, the drone is equipped with two liquid tanks, a pump and a spray bar.

Thanks to the drone’s low altitude in flight, very large area coverage of up to 6ha/ hr can be achieved and spray management improved. This would make the VoloDrone a sustainable, precise and cost-effective alternative to helicopters. Due to the system’s high flexibility and GPS control, more selective area-specific treatments are also possible.

Appropriate flight and application tests will be carried out with the demonstrator VoloDrone sprayer over the next growing season. Further information on John Deere and Volocopter can be found at www.deere.

The complex now has an increased capacity to set 1.5 million eggs. Upgrades include the installation of 12 new incubators using the latest Petersime technology, 12 new hatchers, a fully automated parent takeoff, and a new sexing and processing line complete with two chicken-holding machines.

“Cobb’s commitment to our footprint in the region is clearly demonstrated by more than £8 million invested into the project,” said Dominic Smith, production director for Europe, the Middle East and Asia at Cobb Europe. “The expanded facility allows us better control of pure lines and to ultimately produce some of the most superior-quality products in the industry,

allowing our customers to maximise the genetic potential of our birds.”

Production and hatchery continued during the expansion. To maintain the health and biosecurity status of the

product, the hatchery team took a number of precautions, including sectioning off portions of the hatchery, building false partitions, and creating a hazard analysis critical control point plan in partnership with the quality assurance team.

“It was important to our team to keep operations running without impacting our

customers while maintaining our high levels of biosecurity and compartmentalisation standards,” said Chris Murrell, European hatcheries manager at Cobb Europe.

“Our contractors did an exceptional job working around the planned egg sets, transfers and hatching without disrupting our standards of production.”

To keep disruption to a minimum, the project was completed in several phases.

Construction began in 2018 following the move of the Quality Control Centre — a sector of Cobb Europe that incorporates the highest standards of laboratory facilities, transport and service teams — to a new site in Norfolk. Cobb Europe has plans in 2020 to introduce a trial and research area on the newly expanded site to focus on further understanding the needs of the genetics.

Following a recruitment drive beginning in 2020, the expanded facility is expected to double the head count to 38 team members, further adding employment opportunities in the area.

FU President Minette Batters has urged MPs to recognise the importance of Britain’s high farming standards and ensure they are not sacrificed by the UK’s future trade policy, as the NFU held one of its first receptions for politicians after the General Election.

MPs from across the political spectrum attended the reception, along with peers, industry representatives and civil servants, to meet with the NFU and hear its priorities for the coming parliament.

Batters welcomed Defra Secretary of State Theresa Villiers and her ministerial team back to their posts and she also paid tribute to the shadow Defra team that lost their seats in the election.

For our economy, our health and our environment, there is nothing more important than the food we eat and for me, food and farming standards sit at the heart of everything.

Our food values of animal welfare, environmental protection and food safety must be central to everything from agricultural policy to trade policy.

“This is why I have been calling continually for the Government to introduce a trade and standards commission that can advise the Government on future trade agreements and also scrutinise the negotiations to ensure our high farming standards are not undermined by substandard imports.

“The Government now has a fantastic opportunity to make British agriculture a global leader in producing the most sustainable and climatefriendly food in the world, which can be valued at home and abroad. Can-Am aims to influence new generation of farmers at Lamma 2020

an-Am ambassadors Tom Pemberton (Tom Pemberton FarmLife), Oliver Roberts (Olly’s Farm) and Hannah Jackson (RedShepherdess) will be taking centre stage at LAMMA 2020 (7-8 January 2020) at the Can-Am meetup on stand 6.820.
