Survey reveals more progressive glass silage-making practice

More progressive grass silage-making practices indentified in a new dairy farmer survery should help UK producers improve milk forage performance Trends towards more progressive grass silage–making practices identified in a new dairy farmer survey should help UK producers improve milk from forage performance, but care is needed to ensure producers maximise the benefits.

This was the joint message from Germinal and Volac at a briefing on the results of a new multi–cut grass silage– making survey, which points to the increasing popularity of taking first cuts earlier and making more frequent subsequent cuts.

In the survey of over 150 dairy farmers, of whom an overwhelming 89% expressed a desire to increase their milk from forage, 60% stated that first cuts have become earlier over the past three years and 44% reported shortening their cutting intervals.

“We are clearly seeing a significant shift towards a more progressive approach to grass silage–making amongst UK dairy farmers,” said Germinal GB’s Ben Wixey. “This move to earlier and more frequent cutting is often referred to as ‘multi–cut’.

“The clear majority are making these changes for very good reasons. Among those farmers already taking more silage cuts per year, or intending to, the top reasons given were: to make better quality silage (71% of respondents); 4 | February 2018

to make more milk from grass silage (68%); and to reduce bought–in feed costs (65%).

Far fewer, just 40%, were doing it to increase their overall grass silage quantity.”

The survey also found that of the 44% of respondents who had already changed to a shorter cutting interval in the past three years, 92% were seeing a level of improvement in grass silage quality, with 54% saying quality was much better.

“This shift to multi–cut appears to be working for these early adopters,” continued Ben Wixey. “This is great news, but we want to ensure that as the practice moves into the mainstream, the changes in management needed to maximise the potential benefits of the system are fully understood.

“Success starts by ensuring leys are in the best possible condition, which for many will mean more frequent reseeding than is commonly practised on most dairy farms. It will then include everything from how fields are managed the previous autumn through to how the higher energy grass silage is fed.”

Echoing this, Volac’s Derek Nelson highlighted silage preservation as a key example of where clarity is required with a multi–cut approach, as survey results revealed some confusion.

“Fundamentally, the steps involved in making grass silage don’t change if adopting a multi–cut approach, but some steps may need extra attention to detail,” explained Mr Nelson. “When wilting, for example, because individual cuts are likely to be lighter, you can reach the optimum 28–32% dry matter for ensiling much quicker. So it’s important not to over–wilt.

“Similarly, because crops are cut younger, they are likely to be higher in protein and metabolisable energy (ME). Higher protein is a good thing, but it can negatively affect the fermentation, and therefore the preservation of nutrients. So there’s a clear case for boosting fermentation efficiency with a proven additive. Yet only 35% of respondents in the survey recognised that taking more cuts can increase the need for a silage additive.”

Interestingly, the cost of additive treatment per cut is likely to be lower with a multi–cut system, said Mr Nelson, because individual cuts will weigh less and an additive is applied per tonne.

“Another area to pay attention to is chop length,” Mr Nelson highlighted. “Younger, leafier crops are likely to be easier to consolidate in the clamp than older, stemmy ones, so there’s less of a need to strive for very short chop lengths.

Volac says its new Lifeguard milk formula range has been specifically designed to meet the rapidly evolving demands of modern calf rearers.

Based on concentrated whey protein, which makes up the majority of the protein fraction of natural cow colostrum, the new milk formulas incorporate only the highest quality ingredients. Whey protein represents 65% of the protein content of colostrum, whereas the other 35% is casein protein.

The whey protein content of whole milk is only 20%.

“What we are now able to do is to filter and concentrate up the liquid whey protein fraction of milk and collect the important proteins, fats, sugars and other bioactive components so important for calf programming.

The resultant important ingredient, now integral to all our calf milk formulas, is Imunopro – a concentrated 6 | February 2018

whey protein base material packed with the vital amino acids and immunoglobulins so necessary for healthy youngstock growth and development,” explained Volac nutritionist Ian Watson.

“Production of this concentrated whey protein also means we can now ‘precision-formulate’ our milk replacers based on true protein, which involves looking at the crucial limiting amino acids for calves – such as lysine and leucine – just as pig and poultry sector nutritionists have done so effectively in recent years for monogastric species,” he added.

Volac makes Imunopro from liquid whey and then formulates in a balanced range of high quality nutrition and health ingredients to meet modern calf development requirements.

“The first phase is liquid blending where the Imunopro milk complex is balanced with the necessary additional protein, oils and sugars required to allow calves to hit optimum growth and development targets when fed recommended daily amounts of milk replacer.

“The protein is balanced to ensure calves will be fed the optimum amount of true protein in the form of essential amino acids. It is important to appreciate that the crude protein content on the bag label does not give you an indication of the useable protein available to the calf,” Mr Watson said.

“The oil is balanced with high quality vegetable fats to mimic the milk fat profile, plus the addition of butyrate (C4:0), which has been shown recently to improve gut health.

“The sugars are also balanced to ensure the final milk replacer product contains the correct energy level to meet accepted target growth rates.

“The fully balanced liquid blend is then spray dried for optimum mixability, palatability and consistency before, finally, the addition of Volac’s proven package of health ingredients plus enhanced levels of vitamins and minerals.”

Four calf milk replacer products make up the new Lifeguard range for UK calf rearers, with each product performance formulated to meet specific growth rate targets.

to guide the rotor over every undulation. The MULTITAST wheel makes the support triangle much larger. This allows the rotors run smoothly and suppresses vibrations.

On an upward slope the MULTITAST wheel lifts the rotor ensuring the ideal gap between the tines and the ground so the tines do not penetrate the ground. Clean forage is guaranteed as a result. On a downward slope the MULTITAST wheel guides the rotor downwards and prevents raking losses.

Because the rotors are mounted in gimbals, they can adjust to all inclinations

of up to +/- 5 degrees. The result is the ultimate in ground tracking. 260/70-15.3 tyres are standard.

The transport height of the TOP 652 is below 4.00 m with all tine arms fitted. This means that you can conveniently drive from one field to the next without having to remove tine arms. This saves time and significantly increases the productivity and cost effectiveness of the rake.

Operating the rake is straightforward and is activated using a single-acting connection.

Maxxum 145 Multicontroller with ActiveDrive 8 rated a world-beater in DLG powerMix test A Case IH Maxxum 145 Multicontroller equipped with the company’s new ActiveDrive 8 transmission has achieved the lowest specific fuel consumption ever recorded for a four-cylinder tractor in the PowerMix test conducted

by Deutsche LandwirtschaftsGesellschaft (DLG, the German Agricultural Society).

Named Machine Of The Year 2018 at Agritechnica, the new model achieved an average specific fuel consumption of 258g/kWh in the Field Work section of the test, almost 9.5 per cent less than the 282g/ kWh recorded by its nearest competitor.

The test was carried out at the DLG Test Center near Frankfurt using the DLG PowerMix Roller stand. The facility is the world’s most efficient for measuring the complete tractor system, because engineers can replicate real field work conditions.

On the basis of typical tractor workloads, DLG has defined 14 load cycles, under which the vehicle’s overall fuel and AdBlue consumption, performance and ultimately energy efficiency are determined. The cycles reflect typical field and transport work under partial and full loads.

The DLG’s PowerMix test rig simulates 14 different field-work and transport tasks.

Tests cover pure pulling work, for example with a plough or cultivator, as well as mixed work with the PTO shaft and hydraulic system, as with a

rotary manure spreader or baler. Heavy and light transport tasks are also reproduced to obtain an overall picture of the tractor’s energy efficiency in use. The results are summarised in the respected Powermix figure, providing an accurate assessment of the fuel efficiency of different makes and models of tractor under practical conditions.

The Maxxum 145 Multicontroller is powered by a 4.5-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged and intercooled FPT engine that meets EU Stage IV emissions regulations using the Hi-eSCR selective catalytic reduction system.

The maximum power output is is 175hp with Power Management.

In the DLG PowerMix test, the Maxxum recorded an average Field Work fuel consumption figure of 258g/kWh, with specific consumption ranging from 230g/kWh when operating a rotary harrow at 100 per cent load to 302g/kWh with a baler.

A key factor in the result was the tractor’s ActiveDrive 8 transmission, a new 24×24 semi-powershift that provides eight powershift steps in each of three ranges. The transmission can now be specified on all Maxxum Multicontroller tractors from 116hp to 145hp as an alternative to ActiveDrive 4, a four-step 16×16 40km/hr semipowershift system, and the continuously variable 50km/hr CVXDrive continuously-variable (CVT) transmission.

With features that make the tractor more efficient and more relaxing to drive, ActiveDrive 8 is suited to power-hungry tasks where maintaining momentum is critical, such as cultivations or operating large mowers, because the clutch pedal is not required to change gear.

The ActiveDrive 8 transmission offer three ranges, each with eight gears.

Range One of ActiveDrive 8, which covers speeds up to 10.2km/hr and is designed for heavier draft work and applications requiring very low speeds, is also available with additional creep speeds. Range Two, covers nearly 90 per cent of field, grassland and loader requirements, allowing the tractor to work under full load, without any torque disruption, from 1.6-18.1km/hr. All-new Landini Rex 4 Series tractors were launched to farmers at the LAMMA 2018 show.

The all-new Landini Rex 4 Series tractors will make their UK farming debut at the LAMMA show in January, representing a new range of compact but powerful and durable power units suited to applications where space is limited.

The 95hp Rex 4-100 F will be on display from a line-up spanning 69-111hp and available in different configurations to suit a number of applications.

The ‘F’ version, for

example, can be configured to no more than 1.3m wide so it has potential as a heavy-duty yard and cubicle house scraping tractor, while the ultra-narrow version that can be set up barely 1m wide is designed primarily for vineyard work.

There are seven power outputs altogether and the new transmissions available provide a threespeed powershift option for the first time, enabling operators to quickly change ground speed when towing or working soil-engaging implements without losing momentum.

The tractors are available with an open platform or a new cab design with a virtually flat floor – which contrasts with the more common ‘legs astride’ seating position of tractors like this because of the transmission tunnel.

Power comes from a new 2.9-litre compact fourcylinder engine providing similar outputs to the new models’ predecessors but there is additional torque at the lower end of the rev range to help lift performance.

New Eco pto gearing and Eco 40kph transmission options help fuel consumption by lowering engine speeds in work and during transport, while larger fuel tanks reduce fill-up frequency, especially on the versions that get a 90-litre tank – almost 40% up on the previous design.

Even low disease levels drag profits back and skimping on the cleaning routine between flocks is false economy, says Lancashire based cleaning specialist Steve Birchall.

“There is no opportunity these days to rest buildings between flocks. Turnaround times are tight and it is, therefore, vital that buildings are not only throughly cleaned but disinfected as well, and if there has been a problem

the cleaning and disinfection treatment should take account of it” says Steve, who has been operating a nationwide poultry contract shed cleaning business for over 30 years.

His three teams are equipped to carry out whatever cleaning regime producers require and he suggests a good standard routine for anyone who wants the best safeguard.

After the litter has been removed, the building and any equipment either retained inside or taken out should be power washed at about 2,500 psi with a combined cleaner/ sanitizer/deodorizer, which should remove some of the 80% of micro organisms at this stage.

each spreader optimally to the properties of the relevant fertiliser and thus to achieve the perfect lateral distribution for both fertilisers. Now, for the first time, Amazone introduces this possibility of twin fertiliser utilisation.

When a mounted spreader is fitted to the front of a tractor, the spreading unit is then not directed to the rear, but to the front. This means, that when operating the spreader, one has to think of everything as a mirror

image. To relieve the operator of having to think like this, Amazone has developed inhouse software for the front mounting of spreaders where the spreading functions are displayed in reverse.

In this way, even when side, border or water course spreading, the spreader can be switched on at the correct side without any problem.

The software also mirrors the optional SwitchPoint on/off points. That means, on a front mounted spreader, that the spread fan is pushed ahead of the machine so that the relevant switching point has to be positioned way in front of the spreader.

The precondition for transporting any front mounted spreader on the road in traffic is the compliance with the legal requirements. This includes, in the main, the road lighting and the adherence to the relevant specification with regard to line of sight.
