FASTBALE NOW WITH FILM-ON FILM CAPABILITY

Vicon’s non-stop round baler-wrapped combination, the FastBale is now available with film-on-film capability

V

icon’s non-stop round baler-wrapper combination, the FastBale, is now available with film-on-film capability, in addition to traditional net tying. Film tying is exactly the same as net tying – only the material used to secure the bale is different. The revised process sees film used to tie the bale before it leaves the chamber, and with it comes several advantages. Thanks to film’s pre-stretch capabilities, the film-onfilm process reduces bale expansion as it leaves the chamber, creating a denser

bale than the net-wrapped equivalent. And with it, less oxygen is trapped inside the bale, contributing to an improvement in forage quality. “Film-on-film is yet another extension of the FastBale’s impressive capabilities,” explains Vicon baler specialist Mike Howell. “With film stretched to catch the edges of the bale, this bale tying technique builds on the bale qualities that Vicon is known for – superb bale shape and high density.” When it comes to waste recycling, film-on-film provides additional benefits for farmers.

Disposal requires users only to deal with plastic as a single waste stream – not a combination of plastic with net. FastBale’s revised film-on-film injection system can also be used with rolls of net, for those operators who prefer total flexibility with silage quality. Including rolls in use, the nonstop baler-wrapper has the capacity to carry up to 10 rolls of bale wrap, plus two rolls of either net or film for tying. The film-on-film option adds £4,170 to the cost of FastBale.

igures released by the AEA, confirm UK agricultural tractor registrations returned to year-on-year growth in October, with a total of 804 machines registered this year, 17% more than in October 2020 But the Association also said that the widespread disruptions being experienced throughout global supply chains means that delivery lead times remain longer than usual. “Without that,” explained

Stephen Howarth, their agricultural economist, “the monthly figure might have been even higher and indeed it is 7% below the average for the time of year during the five years prior to 2020.

TRAMSPREAD TO DISTRIBUTE ROELAMA IN THE UK Tramspread has become the sole UK distributor of Roelama slurry applicators. The range is manufactured in the Netherlands.

T

ramspread has become the sole UK distributor of Roelama slurry applicators. The Roelama range is manufactured in the Netherlands and includes trailing shoe machines with working widths of 6.4 to 12 metres. “Roelama manufactures high quality, easy to maintain trailing shoe applicators that can be used with an umbilical system or mounted to a tanker,” says Tramspread managing director, Terry Baker. The Sleepflex and Sleepflex Farmer models can be specified with trailing shoes or cutting disks and have a vertical, three or five-part, hydraulic folding

mechanism. The swinging arm for the drag hose has been neatly designed to prevent the hose from running underneath by angling it away from the machine at all times. “The Sleepflex Farmer is a professional machine. It has adjustable wheels and 20-centimetre row distance spacing to maximise precision nutrient application,” explains Mr Baker. The Sleepflex is a 12-metre unit that is suitable for larger farms and contractors. It features an integrated lift, fully electrical hydraulic steering, and two turning points on the swinging arm which enables the operator to reverse without crossing

the drag hose. “This helps to manoeuvre the wider width machine in tight spaces,” he adds. Both machines require less maintenance than some competitors due to the design needing fewer turning points which reduces greasing. “There are also some optional extras such as section control and flow meters that will appeal to those looking for a precision led approach to nutrient application,” says Mr Baker. Tramspread now offers the Sleepflex Farmer in working widths of 6.4, 7.2, 8 and 8.8 metres and the Sleepflex at a working width of 12 metres. The 12-metre model will be available to view on the Tramspread stand at LAMMA in January.

CONTINENTAL: STAMP OUT SOIL COMPACTION

Continental is working with several other leading agri businesses to raise awareness of soil compaction caused by heavy machinery

C

ontinental is working with several other leading agri businesses to raise awareness of soil compaction caused by heavy machinery and to highlight the simple measures that can reduce the problem. “The ‘stamp out soil compaction’ campaign has been launched to demonstrate how the right choice of tyres and maintaining tyre pressures can help to minimise soil compaction. Continental has also developed a mobile app to help operators choose the correct pressure for any given load,” says Continental’s agricultural tyre specialist, Richard Hutchins. Working with ADAS soil scientist John Williams, Continental has highlighted that up to 30% of soils in the UK are severely degraded and that 39% of the cost attributed to compaction could be reduced by choosing the correct tyres and running machines at the optimum pressure for load. The first machinery test used a KUHN Optimer XL 5000 to show how reducing pressures by almost half the recommended road inflation reduced soil compaction and improved the operating efficiency of the tractor and the cultivator. On a stubble field, the rear

tyres of a Fendt 720 were set to 9 psi and the front to 12 psi. “This is less than half what the tractor could operate with on the road, and it demonstrates the difference needed to operate at the right pressure for load when using large implements,” he says. In contrast, the same tractor was also run at 21 psi in both the front and rear tyres. “The tyre slip increased dramatically when the pressures were increased, rising from below 10% to above 40%. The tractor was visibly struggling for grip and was leaving skid marks in the soil. A greater percentage of the overall weight was being applied to a smaller surface area which severely compacted the soil,” he says. The weight of farm vehicles and the tyre pressures chosen are a major contributor to soil compaction. Mr Hutchins suggests that increased axle weights, caused by heavy implements and more powerful machines, can be offset by tyres that can spread this weight. “Damage to topsoil is caused by incorrect tyre inflation, whilst compaction in subsoil is largely caused by increased axle loads. Calculating the correct pressure for load will minimise the impact farming has on both,” he explains.

To help operators, Continental has designed an app that calculates the correct pressure for load based on the type of tyre and the weight of the vehicle, including any implement being used. “The Agriculture TireTech app can be operated using both iOS and Android devices. It is free to download and easy to use,” he says.

KUHN LAUNCHES NEW RATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

Kuhn has increased the ration programming and feed management capabilities across its diet feeder range.

K

UHN has increased the ration programming and feed management capabilities across its diet feeder range with the launch of a new package of customised weighing, monitoring, and reporting solutions. Following a collaboration with the specialist Italian manufacturer Dinamica Generale, KUHN now offers highly intuitive programmable weighing as standard on all machines. In addition, the company offers the option of either a secondary display or a remote-control facility, available through pre-loaded ‘apps’ on a smartphone or tablet. For full ration tracking and management, KUHN also now offers a cloud-based data transfer function that provides a comprehensive package of monitoring and reporting options, controlled from a personal computer and with the potential to interface with other farm management software. The DG600 terminal is now a standard inclusion on all KUHN Profile and Euromix trailed diet feeders. Proven in the most extreme cold and hot temperature

environments, this base box is designed to be robust and resilient. The advanced monitor has twin screens, the first to show weights and a second that serves as a virtual keypad that allows ingredient names and quantities to be shown simultaneously. The DG600 has scrollable menus that make choosing and inputting data faster and easier. It has the capacity to store up to 99 mixes, with each having up to 24 ingredients, and up to 48 feed batches at any one time but can be used as a simple weighing display if required.

potential to access historic information and download or share a PDF. In the case of both the Datamix View and Datamix Control ‘apps’, the software is preloaded onto the devices, which are included in the option package, and there are no annual subscriptions to be paid. For more extensive ration management, KUHN offers DTM data transfer software for use with the DG600 or DG8000 systems. This cloud-based facility allows data transfer through a 3G modem or via a flash drive and provides a wide range of ration programming, monitoring, and reporting functions. Operating with the DG8000 base system, DTM data transfer can be integrated with many of the leading herd management programmes. This allows dietary information to be combined with herd health data, for example, to enable optimisation of the ration and tracking of any variations in herd performance.

If a secondary monitor is required for use in the loader cab, KUHN offers the Datamix View ‘app’, which is available pre-loaded onto a rugged smartphone or tablet. This connects to the DG600 by wifi, within a range of 90 metres. For remote programming, KUHN offers the alternative of the Datamix Control ‘app’; in this case, the DG600 becomes the secondary display with programming only possible through the Southam Agricultural smartphone Fields Farm, Station Road Southam, Warwickshire or tablet. LANDINI: PRECISION FARMING WITH THE REX 4

Precision technologies offer huge potential to establish and manage vine and fruit crops

P

recision technologies offer huge potential to help establish and manage vine and fruit crops. In a series of demonstrations, tractor specialist Landini has been working with technology firms to bring growers up to date on what’s possible. Requiring arrow-straight rows for equal spacing, light interception, growth and ease of treatment and harvesting, fruit and vine crop establishment of is a task ideally suiting satellite-guided tractor steering. for establishment, but then for subsequent operations such as mowing and spraying, using the same recorded A-B lines. But on many orchard and vineyard enterprises, precision technologies have much wider potential to ease workloads and improve crop yields and quality, believes Luke Barnard, precision farming specialist at AgriArgo UK, the distributor of Landini and McCormick tractors. Demonstrations “Recent demonstrations in conjunction with Horsepower

UK, our Kent dealer, allowed us to illustrate on a Landini REX4-100F tractor how auto-steering using a TopCon AES-35 retro-fit electric steering system, can aid planting and subsequent operations,” he explains. “This led to discussions regarding other technologies with potential benefits, including auto spray control, altering the application rate and nozzle sections on-the-move to apply only as much of a product as necessary, and only where required.

INFECTIOUS CALF SCOUR CASES LIKELY CAUSED BY MIX OF DISEASE ORGANISMS New diagnostic data from MSD Animal Health suggests nearly a quarter of infectious calf scour cases are likely caused by mix of disease organisms

N

ew diagnostic data from MSD Animal Health suggests nearly a quarter of infectious calf scour cases are likely to have been caused by a mix of disease organisms widespread in the UK farming environment. Last winter the company was able to monitor scour pathogen incidence on a number of UK calf rearing units. “Between October 2020 and March 2021, we were able to examine different scour pathogen incidence thanks to our own disease surveillance scheme based on faecal sample test kits,” explains MSD Animal Health livestock veterinary adviser Dr Kat Baxter-Smith She adds that these ScourCheck kits are convenient, easy-to-use and accurate on farm – and will pick up the presence of rotavirus, coronavirus, E. coli or cryptosporidium infections. Their use helps farmers and their vets to discuss appropriate scour disease management approaches, depending on the mix of infectious organisms identified. Other pathogens, such as Salmonella spp and coccidia should be identified by full lab analysis. “During this six-month period, we gathered data from 112 farms and 61 percent of faecal

16 | AgriNews | December 2021

samples taken from these calf rearing units returned a positive result – with 23 percent of these positive tests having mixed infections.” Dr Baxter-Smith stresses that, unfortunately, treatment for infectious calf scours can be challenging and time consuming, so the key to better disease control lies in prevention of this troublesome young animal health issue. “We know that scour continues to be a significant disease problem in young calves, particularly over the winter months. Indeed, scour is the main cause of death in animals under two months of age1. The husbandry aim therefore, simply has to be trying to stop the disease occurring in the first place,” she says.

calves are most at risk from infectious scours during the first 1-4 weeks of life and need a source of protection – through passive transfer of antibodies in the colostrum – to help keep them healthy. On many units, she suggests, normal colostrum may not provide enough antibodies. “However, vaccination of the calf’s mother with Bovilis® Rotavec® Corona between 12 and 3 weeks before calving boosts colostrum quality, allowing you to feed high levels of antibodies against rotavirus, coronavirus and E.coli F5 (K99) in early life. Calves gain protection by drinking this fortified colostrum from their vaccinated mothers.

“To ensure this passive transfer of antibodies from the dam to calves, four litres of colostrum (or at least 10 “Practically, this means making percent of calf body weight) sure your cow colostrum containing 50g/litre of IgG is as good as it can be, in antibodies should be fed addition to ensuring good within the first four hours of environmental hygiene and birth. This should be followed management. Indeed, a good by two additional litres within first step in terms of making 12 hours of birth. For calves your calf rearing enterprise left on the cow, getting four more resilient to infectious litres of colostrum requires scour problems is to give your approximately 20 minutes dry cows a vaccine to boost of continuous suckling,” she dam colostrum quality presays. calving – and then feeding enough of this fortified feed to your newborn calves.” Dr Baxter-Smith says that

PRECISION FARMING KIT ELIGIBLE FOR NEW GOVERNMENT GRANTS

Following the Government’s recent announcement that it is making £27 million available to farmers to invest in productivity-boosting equipment

F

ollowing the Government’s recent announcement that it is making £27 million available to farmers to invest in productivity-boosting equipment, LH Agro has confirmed that a range of its Topcon precision farming technology is eligible for grant funding.

§ Manure spreader ECU (section and variable rate controller): £1,250 grant funding. “At a time when input prices such as fertiliser are at an all time high, it’s pleasing to be able to announce

On Tuesday 19th November, Farming Minister, Victoria Prentis announced that farmers and growers in England can apply for ‘Farming Investment Fund’ grants to buy new equipment and infrastructure which will help to improve production efficiencies. LH Agro, Topcon’s preferred distributor in the UK, has subsequently confirmed that the grants can be used to offset the costs of the following eligible equipment: § Topcon CropSpec canopy sensors: £11,250 grant funding § Topcon sprayer ECU (section and variable rate controller): £1,850 grant funding § Topcon yield monitoring ECU (for combines and root crop harvesters): £1,850 grant funding 22 | AgriNews | December 2021

that financial assistance is available to reduce the cost of investing in an array of precision farming equipment which can help to reduce input usage,” explains LH Agro Managing Director, Richard Reed. “The time and money saving benefits of RTK and GPS enabled auto-steering and implement guidance systems are well documented, with improved accuracy and reduced drilling overlaps and misses at the crop

establishment phase a given,” Mr Reed explains. “But precision farming technologies can also improve the accuracy of fertiliser and spray applications later in the cropping calendar, with realtime crop sensors such as Topcon’s CropSpec system (now available at a starting price of just over £1,000) enabling growers to ensure fertiliser inputs are applied at the right rate, the right time and in the right place. “Aftermarket sprayer control ECUs and manure spreader controllers which add variable rate and section control capabilities to existing implements can also improve farm production efficiencies, as can aftermarket yield monitors which feed vital harvest information back into the farm manager’s office. “We’re pleased to see that the Government recognises the value and benefit of these technologies and look forward to working with farmers to take advantage of this latest grant scheme.” For more information about the Topcon equipment mentioned, please visit www. lh-agro.co.uk or call LH Agro on 01480 496367.

DRONE AG: NEW DRONE SOFTWARE LAUNCHES AT LAMMA

New features of Drone Ag’s Skippy Scout crop monitoring will be available to experience in virtual reality at Lamma

N

ew features of Drone Ag’s Skippy Scout crop monitoring software will be available to experience in virtual reality (VR) at LAMMA on stand 11.344 in hall 11. The 2020 LAMMA gold ‘future innovation’ award winners will offer visitors a chance to experience the new features using a VR headset. “The headset will show users how Skippy Scout enables them to see a whole field from above and zoom in on specific parts of the field that have been imaged by a drone,” explains founder, Jack Wrangham.

time. “We are the only provider to offer users a droneenabled, full field overview that includes the ability to focus on any area of the field and choose where to inspect at leaf-level,” he says. Mr Wrangham stresses that this is not future technology and that drones with this software are already being used on farms throughout the UK. “A drone with Skippy can walk a crop 20 times faster than a farmer on foot. PDF reports are generated immediately showing the green area index and the number of plants. This technology is being used by hundreds of farmers already and the data will soon be used to support the use of spraying drones too,” he says. To show the full extent

to which drone captured images can improve crop management, Drone Ag will also be exhibiting one of the latest DJI spraying drones that has a 20-litre capacity and is also capable of granular spreading. “With data from Skippy, users can program spraying drones like the DJI model we will have on the stand. Using this technology can help to reduce soil compaction and the use of chemical by deploying a spraying drone to target only the plants that require treatment,” he explains. Skippy Scout can count cereals, OSR, soybeans, beans, peas, and potatoes, offering an accurate total of plants in an image, as well as the number of plants per square metre. “The new software is only £30 per month and is compatible with Apple devices and most off-the-shelf drones. It can save time, find weeds and disease faster, and harvest the data needed to improve the sustainability of broad acre crop farming,” he concludes.

UK DAIRY COULD SEE ‘ENORMOUS’ GROWTH AS GLOBAL DEMAND RISES

Global demand for dairy is increasing at a rate of 2% per year, an enormous opportunity for the UK dairy sector

G

lobal demand for dairy is increasing at a rate of 2% per year, an 'enormous' opportunity for the UK dairy sector The rising global demand in dairy products represents an 'enormous'

opportunity for the UK dairy sector hoping to expand post-Brexit, a new report says. The Kite Consulting report, commissioned by National Milk Records (NMR), Arla and Dairy UK, highlights new opportunities for the UK dairy sector to grow. Increased export demand is expected, particularly in Asia, Africa and Central and Latin America, regions where British dairy could prosper from. Since the UK officially left the EU in January 2021, UK dairy exports to the EU-27 have 24 | AgriNews | December 2021

fallen, as have imports from the EU, but to a lesser extent. While dairy consumption may be stable in most Western countries, global demand continues to increase at a rate of around 2% per

year – or around 18bn kgs of milk. This is equivalent to the entire milk production output of a country like New Zealand, the report explains. In the report's outlook to 2025, it expects the world dairy market demand growth to require a 28% increase in dairy imports compared to 2019. It highlights the efficiency of dairy production in the UK - a major selling point - which produces milk with a carbon footprint half of the global average.

The global carbon footprint of milk is around 2.5 kg CO2e per kg milk, while the UK average is around 1.25kg CO2e per kg milk. This provides opportunities for the UK dairy industry, as the sector also has a good track record in terms of animal welfare and traceability. "There are opportunities ahead, particularly in countries like the UK where farmers and dairy processors are actively working to address environmental concerns around dairy production," the report says. "Whilst major net exporters are facing increased environmental volume constraints, there is the opportunity for the UK, with strong activity in this area, to access significant export growth, if it is allowed to innovate to address carbon emissions and environmental concerns. "This will require innovation in the processing sector, to enable UK producers to access growth export markets, and it will require political support for the industry as it transforms and adapts towards a net zero and nature-friendly future."

ranswick reports ‘significant uplift’ in poultry sales

Cranswick has announced its preliminary half year results for the 26 weeks ending 25 September 2021, which show strong like-forlike revenue growth of 6.4%, driven partly by a significant uplift in poultry sales. The company has recently completed an expansion project at its new poultry processing facility at Eye in Suffolk. The firm also announced its planned new £31m breaded poultry facility on track for completion in early 2023. Total revenue in the six

months was £993.1m, 6.6% higher than the £931.6m reported in the corresponding period last year. Adjusted profit before tax for the period at £68.3m was 12.5% higher than the £60.7m in the corresponding period last year. “We have made further positive and sustainable progress during the first half of the year, delivering revenue and earnings growth in an incredibly challenging operating environment,” said chief executive Adam Couch. “We continue to invest in the long-term sustainability of our business. We have made excellent headway in delivering our Second Nature

sustainability strategy with several major milestones reached during the period. These include achieving carbon neutral status across all 14 of our eligible manufacturing facilities and committing to purchasing 100% deforestation-free soya which we expect will result in a c.20% reduction in carbon compared to the previous system. “Our outlook for the current year is unchanged and we have a solid platform from which to continue Cranswick’s successful long-term development.”

STEVE BIRCHALL FOUNDER AND OWNER OF STEVE BIRCHALL POULTRY SERVICES

“It’s not the most glamourous job, but we take price in what we do and the end result is rewarding” WHAT IS YOUR JOB IN A NUTSHELL? I am the founder and owner of Steve Birchall Poultry Services and I have three teams who travel the country cleaning all types of poultry houses. We even strip wash and rebuild traditional free range units, sell second hand diesel washers and supply a range of government approved soaps and disinfectants to your customers. HOW DID YOU END UP WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

At a young age I was always on my grandad’s allotment, after school and at weekends helping out, or as he would call it “being a pain”. I had a fascination with the fancy fowl he kept; he taught me the basics, taught me to care.

at christmas. Working with Shaver breeds and broilers for Moy Park, I was farm manager for the last 8 years of my employment there.

So, in 1970 aged 15 and much to my dad’s disapproval, I left secondary school and went to start my working life at Maple Leaf Hatcheries in Lancashire, I attended Hutton Agricultural College on day release. Maple Leaf was local and to this day I still live in the area. I started work on one of their breeder sites and continued with the same company for the next 15 years.

During my time at Maple Leaf, I got to know many poultry farmers and one asked me if I fancied washing his poultry house for him. And so it began. I invested in a small van and with a 1500psi electric washer, off I went. As i got busier, I started to employ people to help. In the beginning it was mainly broiler sites but the expansion of traditional free-range and now multi-tier systems means those now make up most of our customer base.

I worked on caged sites, broiler sites, rearing farms and even did turkeys

In 1985, Maple Leaf closed and I was made redundant.

We travel all over the country keeping the poultry industry clean.
